Customer Reviews:
Poorly made, not for an entry level student.......2007-04-18
I am using this book for my IT class to get my certification for network+.
My classmates and i have discussed the layout of the book and our findings are that while the book contains tons of information that are necessary to get your certification but it was too much to assimilate in a short amount of time.
The problem with this book is that it tries to fill your head with so much text information that by the end of a chapter you are lost because their was too much info to digest. You have to reread the chapters several time in order to try to grasp what the author is trying to teach you in said chapter.
All we get his info over info but we have no clue as to where it is really applied or why we are learning this information at all. It would have been nice to see pictures associated with the concepts that the author was talking about.
As an analogy, i felt like i was trying to get a surgeon's certifcate but all the teaching i got was from a book that had no pictures to show me what to do in order to perform surgeries. How can i operate if i can't make the difference between organs inside the body....
At the end of my readings I did not feel confident at all in my knowledge of this book and was doubtfull i could get my certification on a first try relying on this book information and the way it was presented to me.
This book becomes nothing more than a big memory exercise and if you have a poor memory be prepared to fail your certification.
The only reason we had to use this book in our class is that the company that certifies you is the company that made this book.
I would not recomment this book as an entry level book to this subject as it is too much info to digest in one book.
In my opinion, if you have to read a chapter several times in order to understand what the author is trying to convoy it means to me that the book was not done properly.
This book needs to be revised with the mindset that it has to include more visuals and be an entry level book to certify people for the job.
If you plan on becoming Network+ certfied and you are a huge visual learner stay far way from this book. Get another book that bears the CompTIA seal and check if it is the right book for you.
This book here clearly wasn't the right book for me and my classmates.
Thanks
Not really all that wonderful.......2007-02-25
I've had to use this for a Networking+ class and have hated and dreaded having to read it and prep class for it. The writing is vague and sloppy and there are many dubious and wrong statements. Some diagrams do not correspond to the text and/or are confusing. You will not get a good idea of many concepts. It's been very frustrating.
I give it two stars because it is specifically for the Network+ test, but would rate it only one star as a general intro to networking because in addition to the above problems it is full of obsolete and legacy stuff like token ring, coax, NetWare.
The chapter on "Networking with Unix-like OS's" has nothing about networking with them.
My copy will be dumped into the library's free box as soon as the course ends.
Good reference/textbook on the subject - very thorough.......2006-12-31
Does what it says on the box - it's a good reference, with much detail and useful practical advice for the upcoming network technician or IT support professional. I think its usefulness is fairly limited outside of those fields but as an introduction to computer networking, it will give you plenty of information. Unfortunately the general tone of the book is reflective of its introductory purpose and more experienced readers might find it slightly annoying. If you are a software professional who is more interested in the programming aspects of networking, consider W. Richard Stevens's "TCP/IP Illustrated" series.
Very in depth.......2006-04-23
There is a lot of info in this book.
There is also a CD (if included with used copies) that has questions to help the user study for the networking+ exam.
I used this book for a networking class.
The book includes review questions and exercises at the end of each chapter to help you get the most of the material presented.
Material includes chapters of TCP/IP, network security, Network operating systems, networking hardware, and other things. The text and drawn diagrams clearly explain things. You will not be sitting there wondering "what does that have to do with anything?"
This book is probably best suited for someone with some networking knowledge, but a beginner could benefit from it as well.
You need a book to study so you are prepared for the CompTia Networking+ test? Then do not pass up this book.
Excellent book for beginners and Intermediate Networking Students.......2005-10-10
The book is well organized and has an easy flow.
As a complete novice in Networking it was hard for me to break-in the language and concept of Networking.
The book provides depth both for a novice as well as intermediate students without getting biased to any specific vendor.

Customer Reviews:
Great study tool for the ICND.......2007-05-31
I purchased this book after failing the ICND when I studied with the Sybex CCNA guide. I highly recommend the Sybex book if you are a networking newcomer. It explains everything in easier terms and does a great job of prepping for the INTRO. I would follow up Sybex with this study guide. After hitting the highlights of this book and using the priorities it sets I passed the ICND.
Also, I wouldn't study ISDN as heavily. I wasn't asked a single ISDN question on either ICND exam. I might have been lucky or Cisco is phasing ISDN out of the exam because it is going out of date.
Overall, this is a good way to pass the ICND.
PERFECT TO DO DE CCNA CERTIFICATION EXAM.......2007-01-20
IT IS THE GOODEST BUY I DID FOR MY PROFESSION. IT'S HELPING ME TO STUDY FOR THE CCNA CERTIFICATION EXAM
Fantastic book for CCNA preparation.......2006-12-14
Wendell Odom did a fantastic job explaining the various aspects of Cisco networking. The book was easy to read and he produced some very creative ideas to clarify some of the tougher material. This book is an excellent source on OSPF, especially the commands. When I took the CCNA exam, I was shocked at how inline the material was compared to the actual exam. The test questions in the book are an excellent source to judge your understanding of the material; however, the exam questions you receive on test day will be much more difficult. If you are able to fully understand what was discussed in the book, you will have no trouble passing the exam. Therefore, I strongly believe that this book provides more than enough information to pass the exam.
Good Resource.......2006-11-29
I think the author did a good job of explaining the topics at the basic level, and he gave just enough information to make a successful CCNA. I liked how he goes over how Cisco devices do different things. If you want to get CCNA, this book is probably the best. I looked at a number of books and frankly the ones that give you a summary do not do justice to candidate, the material, and they are not even good for just passing the exam. You need to understand this stuff and the author does a good job. He highlighed the important sections of the show commands and configurations and he explained them in the following text. Something that you can not find on the Cisco documents ( as much as I like the way they documented everything. )
More than Enough covered to pass CCNA.......2006-11-09
First of all, I assume you want to opt for the single CCNA test instead of taking the separete INTRO/ICND tests (And I certainly encourage you to do so!). This assumption is important because in the single CCNA test you will NEVER need to memorize useless tiny details (e.g., "What is the RFC# defining ICMP?") that might appear in the INTRO test; instead, you definitely have to be able to tell what the right implementation is in a given scenario where something is not working right. This book does have all you need - Yes, read this book and you are exposed to everything you need! Someone who mentioned poor OSPF coverage by the book is definitely wrong. Please make sure you get a copy that says "2005 update included." For some reason, I still see the outdated copies of Cisco press books out there.
[PROS]
Excellent coverage of all major topics, especially (1) frame relay, (2) NAT, (3) Different behaviors of default routing depending on classfull/classless routings, (4) supernetting, etc.
[CONS]
Too much coverage in fact - you will never see RSTP in the actual exam, for example, so skip it completely. Also don't bother memorizing RFC#s, ITU#s, etc. even when Odom says you should memorize them (Such a comment in the book is for those who take the separate exams - certainly not for the single CCNA test).
Two pieces of advice that are probably the most important things of all: (1) No hands on experience? Definitely buy a simulator program! I recommend Bosom though it has some *obvious* bugs that won't slow you down. SemSim is a joke, fyi. (2) The only test engine you ever need is pass4sure (Don't even try one that comes with this book). Do some research online until you find it. Good luck!

Book Description
The most influential web design book ever written, completely updated to cover motion graphics, broadband interactive design, and more. Since it was first published in 1995, designing web graphics has been the seminal resource for web designers to learn the basics and then the nuances of solid design for the web. Lynda Weinman has been updating the book to reflect changes in the technologies affecting web design, but dwg.4 has been largely rewritten from the ground up. Included is coverage of motion graphics made possible by the Flash phenomenon, broadband-enabled graphics issues, usability, and more. Lynda is rewriting the book so that all coverage of specific tools is focused on the essential functionality of these programs (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc.) and not on version-specific attributes of the software, making the book relevant longer for more users.

Great book, as usual for Lynda ..........2007-10-01
I own a total of (4) of Lynda Weinman's books.
Very detailed, very informative, and an excellent reference to have on your book shelf.
I definitely recommend this author, and this particular book.
In the beginning and the future you need................2007-01-12
I have this book for a long time now. It's a very thorow guide for building a website from the very beginning. And I mean from the moment you are trying to get a customer intrested in your websites. telling you how to reach you customers, builiding a concept, video on your website, etc etc. Lynda is the best. I hope there is going to be a upgrade of this book telling you al the new gadgets.
Designing Web Graphics, 4th Edition.......2006-03-07
This is a good reference book for Web Designers. It covers the basic concepts of color usage on the Web. It also gives many hints and examples of good Web design.
Complete Reference.......2005-12-29

If so, then this book is for you!
Group 2.
- Are you looking for a book that guides you through steps to perform different tasks in web graphic design?
If yes, then forget about this title!
I will give it 5 stars, because I'm from Group 1
An excellent book for the new web designer.......2005-12-11
I had heard of Lynda before and seen her website, but I had not read any of her books before this one. I was very impressed with the low level detail and lack of too much jargon in this book. It was short and to the point. The book was an easy and quick read due to her design. The book is good for basic reference information on web design. It touches on almost everything you encounter when designing websites. I was able to touch on the important topics and was given the right amount of theory / background necessary to understand the concepts. I found that chapters on information design architecture, colors, frames and cascading style sheets were very helpful. Although I already have a book on colors, I though the color charts were a nice touch. I agree that this book was not created to be the "bible" of web design. It gives you the basics and points you in the right direction for more fact-finding on your own. The links to other resources were also very helpful in that respect.
Overall, I think this is an excellent book for the new web designer, no matter which tool you are using to create the web pages. The broad approach to the design and notes regarding specific browser quirks was invaluable.

"Perhaps the best-written HTML tutorial ever."
This book occupies a unique spot in my opinion. It's "the competition." All other HTML/Web page learning or how-to books are trying to knock the crown from this book's head. While it may not be for everyone, it just does such a superb job that it defines the field. Congratulations, Elizabeth.
This is what I could classify as a true intermediate or advanced book. Elizabeth Castro doesn't waste time or steps trying to teach a newbie how to click here or create a text file. In fact, so much is assumed that this really can't be called a beginner book at all. So, if you know what you're doing or what you want, this book will serve you well.
The whole HTML thing is broken down into tasks: formatting, text, layout commands, cascading style sheets--the whole nine yards. Then individual HTML commands or tasks are illustrated one to a page. The steps fall down the outside of the page; illustrations line the page's inside.
While this is all a great way to learn HTML, I can still find room for improvement--though not at the expense of the format. For example, a reference or tear-out card would have been handy. And some topics, especially JavaScript, are glossed over too quickly to be useful. From personal experience, I know that some topics, such as FTP, could use even more hands-on examples.
If you "get it" when it comes to computers, and are ready to do some down-and-dirty HTML coding (and I'm not talking lame-old FrontPage here), this book will teach you the basics in no time. It will provide a firm foundation upon which you can easily build your Web pages for the future. --Dan Gookin
Book Description
HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the lingua franca of the Web, and like any language, it's constantly evolving. That's why Elizabeth Castro has written
HTML 4 for the World Wide Web, Fourth Edition: Visual QuickStart Guide, an update to her blockbuster guide to HTML 4. You'll find all the concise, practical advice--and fun examples--that made the first edition a worldwide bestseller, plus entirely new coverage of debugging, JavaScript, and using tables for page layout, and an expanded section on Cascading Style Sheets.
Like all the books in the
Visual QuickStart series, this one breaks even the most complex tasks into easy-to-follow steps illustrated with hundreds of screenshots and the actual code. The book presumes no prior knowledge of HTML, making it the perfect introduction for beginners. But its tabbed format and info-packed appendixes (on special HTML characters and Web-safe colors, for example) also make it a handy and indispensable reference for those who build Web pages for a living. Find out why Amazon called the previous edition a "dream guide" to HTML.
Customer Reviews:
One of the most productive book!.......2007-10-04
The sixth edition has continued to live up to its name. It is indeed a 'Visual Quickstart Guide.' Unlike other books, it presents clear and concise instructions, and no lengthy text. Everything is delivered in point forms. Useful tips are sprinkled over the text here and there as well.
It can also serve as a quick reference tool that is easy to look up to. The appendices consists of the following: some commonly used (X)HTML elements and attributes, CSS properties and values, and some javascipt events. It is definitely worth it to own a copy of it.
It is a beginner's book and it offers more than enough to get you a decent layout for your web pages. Ideal for any novice designer to wants get productive fast.
Great book - bad binding!.......2007-10-04
This updated edition is welcomed as it was written with standards in mind. Very well done.
The binding on this book is horrible. Most of the pages in my copy have come out of the binding!
Good beginner's book!.......2007-09-23
Anyone who picks up this book will be extremely pleased! This introduction to xhtml/css by Castro delivers concise and clear step by step instructions on how to make webpages work. She also has a cool color chart on the back that you can check out for style sheets and the book is in color for easier reading!
Sixth edition best one yet.......2007-09-08
Liz Castro makes it as easy as it can be to learn how to code and control your own web site. You don't need expensive WYSIWYG design applications. In fact, you probably own text editors that will do the job nicely. Purchasing this book in tandem with "Creating a Web Page with HTML" by Liz Castro will have you up and running in, literally, a few hours.
HTML 4 for the world wide web.......2007-09-05
Very good book. A little heavy on the deprecated tags good intro material for JavaScript and CSS.

Full of Technical Falsehoods.......2005-07-08
I am using this book for a data communications class at a local technical school. This review refers to the Fourth Edition of the book, which is current at the time of this review (7 July 2005).
I agree with the last reviewer who said this book was out-of-date. The book devotes much discussion to hierarchical networks that use mainframes, front-end processors, concentrators, and multiplexors. I consider this to be acceptable since the book is meant for data communications classes and not networking fundamentals classes. Data communications texts should be expected to cover phone systems and evolutions of communications networks, in my opinion. However, the fact that the text discusses these types of networks as though they are the current norm is unacceptable and misleading to new IT students.
In addition, the book has several significant technical and grammatical errors in almost every chapter. Take the following example, which serves as a (false) example of CIDR notation for IP addressing:
"For example, the IP address 186.100.0.0 would appear as 186.100.0.0/20 in the CIDR system. The /20 in this example means that the first 12 bits are used to identify the particular network, leaving the rest of the bits to identify the specific host." (Page 12.12, fifth paragraph)
This example--the only example of CIDR given, and vital to understanding the system--is ABSOLUTELY BACKWARD! The /20 signifies that the first twenty bits of the address are used as the subnet mask, and that the last twelve are used for the host. Fortunately, I have studied for many technical certifications like the CompTIA Network+ and Cisco CCNA and was able to recognize this as I read it. Other students may not be so fortunate.
Here's another example, from the chapter on network security:
"Hackers often try to plant a Trojan Horse (a program that is designed to be hidden on the computer and then start at some predetermined time in the future to do some damage to the computer) or ..." (Page 10.13, second paragraph)
This is also absolutely false. The first part of the definition, that trojan horse programs are hidden, could be considered true, but that they start at a predetermined time in the future, and that they do damage to a computer are both completely false. The widely-accepted definition of a trojan horse is a program that performs a different or an addition function to the one it seems and purports to do. Furthermore, I don't know of a single trojan horse program that does damage to a computer when it executes. Usually, these types of programs open a port and run a daemon on a computer, or perform some other function to leave a security vulnerability. Any damage that results comes after an intruder compromises the system. A "time-bomb" is the common term for a program set to execute at a predetermined time.
This last example seems to me to be far more disturbing: not only is there a technical falsehood (or two) in the statement, it seems that the author(s) sincerely did not know the material. Shelly Cashman publishes a lot of texts for technical schools, and perhaps the authors were too concerned with meeting deadlines or including a comprehensive number of topics, even if they didn't necessarily have experience in these areas. Books from other technical publishers, such as O'REILLY, Deitel & Deitel, and No Starch Press would never consider such errors acceptable. The fact that these errors are still present in the fourth edition is disturbing.
What's more, there is no errata page at the Shelly Cashman website to inform readers of typos or errors in the text. In my opinion, this is absolutely unacceptable for any technical publisher.
Unfortunately, not having a great deal of experience in other areas of the data communications field, like telephony systems and older network architectures, I cannot at present recommend an alternative text, other than one that has a number of good reviews and comes from a more prestigious publisher.
Out of touch.......2000-03-23
This book is a big disappointment. In the rapidly changing field of information technology, it is important to stay somewhat up to date with technology. Although the copyright date is 1997, most of the book has not changed since its first edition (circa 1990?).
This book contains such gems as "Today the ARCNET protocol is widely used in a variety of LANS (Page 7-16)" Ha!
The authors also go into great detail about the wonderous SNA protocol, choices regarding terminals, etc.
TCPIP is listed as a 'Wide Area Networking Protocol' and is not listed under the LAN section.
Some 'recent updates' to the second edition talk about the Internet. The inform the reader about valuable Internet utilities such as Gopher and Archie?
According to this book and a question from the exam pool, Ethernet is used on bus networks only...not star.
This is the worst excuse for a technology book I have ever seen. They should rename it 'History of Data Communications'

You generally can't pick up knowledge of Cisco products casually, the way you can learn about Microsoft Windows, Unix, and other products that are more generally accessible. For this reason, Cisco: A Beginner's Guide performs a valuable service. It introduces internetworking novices to the language and fact base that underlie routers, switches, network protocols, and the rest of the Internet's infrastructure. True enough, no book can teach you everything you need to know about a subject as complex as internetworking, but this one does a great job of giving you the background you need to perform well in a class or do hands-on experiments intelligently.
The book goes heavy on prose, enabling you to slowly absorb the truth about complex systems as the author lays a foundation of knowledge and then builds upon it. Conceptual diagrams help drive home relationships among network devices, though the blueprints in the center of the book suffer from being split down the middle by the book's binding--foldouts would have been far better. This is a superb book, though, one of the best around on internetworking with Cisco. It would make an excellent first purchase for a future Cisco expert or a fine "fundamentals" reference for more accomplished network engineers. --David Wall
Topics covered: Internetworking from a theoretical standpoint, backed up by information on how Cisco products handle implementation (meaning, in part, that you get information on which Cisco lines and models are good for which jobs). Technically, readers get the goods on Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS), routers, switches, routing protocols, and security. There's great information on the pantheon of Cisco certifications too.

jumping around.......2007-06-02
This book was written by Toby J. Velte, Ph.D., CCNA, CEO, and dedicated to the "Boyz". Deepest thanks also goes to the young greenhorn Jeremy Cheney. On page 11 it shows a Router connecting two lan's. On page 23 it has the difference between an Access Switch and a LAN Switch. I never knew of a thing called a LAN switch - interesting! Chapter 3 discusses the Cisco Certification. On page 128 it states that Cisco devices are increasingly being tended to by non experts. That is in Chapter 4: Router Overview. On page 148 (Chapter 4) it has how to use TFTP for backing up the configuration file. Chapter 5 shows how to configure the router. Chapter 6 is about switches and hubs - just like on page 128 in chapter 4. Chpater 7 is about internet access products, just like those listed from pages 20 to 25 in chapter 1. Chapter 8 is about routing protocols just like thos ementioned in the INTRODUCTION, page XiV.
What I really like, is that finally, I found documentation that the gateway of a host has to be set to the router's ip. Sounds simple, now, but in a network with a server running BIND with forewarders and the default gateway and a simple router to connect to the Internet and such, this picture on page 505 woud have saved me a lot of time.
It's a good book but not in the same format at the CCNA courses offered by Cisco - the same Cisco that makes Cisco. A good book full of good information, presented in a logical format.
A Pure Joy To Read!.......2007-04-10
Toby and Anthony Velte have done a superb job on this book. I have been an IT professional for over 12 years. I have owned an ISP and consulted with many companies regarding their network infrastructures. The title of this book almost made me pass it up. I'm glad I didn't. I found myself reading this book and looking forward to the next chapter. This book is a good overview of Cisco Fusion architectures, and how to apply it in a real, pragmatic way. It was refreshing how complex technologies and ideas were made simple by good writing. This book is pure candy for an IT professional and a must read for any network engineer or designer. I'll be keeping my eyes open for any other books authored by Toby and Anthony Velte.
Great book!.......2007-03-23
This is a very practical book. If you are just entering the field of networking or would like to get a broad yet solid coverage of Cisco technologies, including firewalls, switches and routers, this book is an excellent choice! There are many certification oriented books on the market, and Cisco online publications may be hard to grasp sometimes (especially for novice users)... This book definitely fills the gap. You start off with the introduction to Cisco. Chapter two gives you a short networking primer. Subnetting can be a killer, so you may actually need some additional help outside this book. So step by step, whether it is about protocols, appliances, topologies, network design, security - you will learn and understand a lot! I also appreciate the authors including excellent illustrations, making the book even easier to "digest". This book is must have!
The first 40 pages in 768 pages........2004-11-17
An awful lot of computer books seem to leave out the first forty pages that should give you an introduction of just what it is that we are trying to do with this piece of hardware or software. This whole book, all 768 pages of it can be considered the first forty pages of any Cisco or Networking book that you might otherwise want to read.
This book talks about the internet, not about how to surf to a web page, but about the underlying structure - the backbone, the protocols, the way a message gets from here to there and back. The orientation is, as you might guess from the title, towards Cisco equipment. But I doubt that there are very many ISPs that don't have at least one Cisco box.
The book covers the Cisco philosophy on routers, switches, quality of service, security, wireless, content delivery, protocols, network management, network design, and finally even how to troubleshoot Cisco networks.
This is not a manual or certification cram guide for say the Cisco 12000 series router. This is the first forty pages of the manual on those products. And after reading the first forty pages, you might know if you need a Series 12000, or a Series 800. You'll at least be able to understand the manuals on these pieces of equipment.
Excellent book. I'd like to see the same thing on PC's, mainframes, clustering, and on and on.

This is the long-awaited 3rd Edition of Tanenbaum's classic book on computer networking. The finest network engineer I know (who was stolen from my previous employer by developers of IPv6) swears by this book, and it is arguably the best single resource for gaining a good technical understanding of modern networking in the mid 1990s. Very Highly Recommended.

A Good Find.......2007-02-16
Good visuals on encapsulation using a layered model. I particularly appreciate that many topics have a presentation for those having a superfluous understanding, as well as, for those having a mathematical bent toward learning (e.g. Fourier Analysis, State Diagrams, Exponential back off, etc).
The author does an excellent job in the hierarchical, broadcast, and multicast routing descriptions; which students can use in further network management analysis. From my experience, Network Management is a topic that many students fail to grasp effectively - largely because they are not adequately prepared in theory and lab experience before taking on graduate coursework. Many of the topics covered in the book are useful in other Computer Science or Information Technology classes.
The sections on IP Addressing are wonderful. The book introduces subnetting, CIDR, NAT in non-threatening fashion. If I were to pick one of the better presentation it would be - e-mail, MIME, Transport layer, and multimedia
Used in collaboration with a few other texts, this book is a must for your library.
Thaddy's comments.......2007-01-10
I have not completed the reading as yet but from what I have found so far this is a very good tutorial on computer networks.
Even on the subjects I used to have good prior knowledge of I have learned a different perspective and interesting new details. The text is also marked with many humouristic comments, which make the reading even easier.
The issues are well explained and served in a way facilitating good comprehension.
The reason I do not give the book 5 stars is that I am still some way from completing my reading so I do not have the overall picture as yet. However, I am really looking forward to move on with this assignment.
The classic has been improved.......2006-05-05
Back in 1993, during my senior year at school, I had to learn computer networks. Back then, the only decent book available was Prof Tanenbaum's 2ed. I had found that book boring because it covered every possible networking algorithm and technique in the world without any references to real-world networks.
Recently, after spending 12 years working on various protocols and networking devices (from DSL modems to core routers), I realized that I had lost touch with the larger world of networking. I had no clue about WiMax, Content Networks, etc. So, I started looking around for a simple to read book that would give me good enough perspective on these new technologies. And I happen to find Tanenbaum's newest 4ed book on Computer Networks.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Prof Tanenbaum explains the concepts very well. He also throws in a piece of his mind here-n-there throughout the book. Almost all of his observations are hilarious. The book is huge, but, with all the funnies thrown in, it is easy to read and understand.
My only complaint would be that some of the material needs to be rearranged to better suit the evolving networking technology world. But, even as it is, the book is a great, easy read for one and all, whether you are a student of computer science, computer engineering, or a manager wanting to brush up on the latest technologies, you will find all the know-how here in this book.
Hard read, but no "ultimate" book for such a broad expanding field.......2006-02-26
This book is a hard read when doing homework problems particularly, but I've never heard of an easy book when learning at this level for computer networks. For what it is, it could have more details to make learning smoother and more efficient. Like many books, it encrypts too much. No need to hide some intricacies because the content itself is hard enough to absorb unless it's natural to you. (The author encrypts to make you think, but I think this is usually unnecessary in general.) This book shows that the Internet must be used to more fully understand the topics at hand. There may be a few minor, detailed intricacies that are not up-to-date, but with computer technology always changing, you can't expect that part to be 100% up-to-date.
As Tanenbaum is well known in the computer writing world, this book is no exception to his presentation skills for readers.
Helpful Background: non-grad level intro network course with a book like Network++ Guide by Tamara Dean (3rd edition suffices), previously used FTP, watched media on Net, understanding a bit about E-mail protocols, comfortable with programming from variables and loops to classes, pointers, and experience looking up any type of less familiar commands could help. The programming files listed in this book are based on C.
Best text I've found on the foundations of computer networking.......2006-01-25
First of all, the fourth edition was published in 2002, so all reviews prior to that date are about a previous edition of this book. This is a classic textbook on computer networking from an academic viewpoint. Do not expect to ever be able to fix a specific network problem or become a CCNE by reading this book. However, doing either of those tasks rests on a firm foundation of the theory found in this book. From the beginning, the author points out that there is some confusion about what a computer network is - a collection of autonomous computers connected by a single technology. He then points out that actually neither the world wide web nor the internet are computer networks. The book goes on to explain networks in terms of a 5 layer system rather than the classic 7 layer OSI model, which is the same as in the previous edition. However, much has been added and much deleted based on the rapidly changing technology involved. For example, the chapter on the physical layer has been completely rewritten. The previous edition focused that chapter on ISDN, ATM and cellular radio. The current edition omits references to that technology and discusses the mobile telephone system and cable television instead. As would be expected, the other section of the book that had the biggest revision was the chapter on the application layer. Gone is the obsolete subject of USENET news, multimedia has changed completely, and the network security section now has its own chapter due to the importance that field has taken on. Finally, the chapter on further reading, which had good comments to go with the suggested reading, was always one of my favorites because it told you why you should read something in addition to showing you what to read, plus the bibliography is divided by network layer. Now, of course, the 3rd edition bibliography section reads like the roll call for a computer book museum. Thus, the new 4th edition chapter on suggested reading is a welcome update. Remember that this book is ultimately about good network design decisions as well as a tutorial on architectures, thus math is inevitable. In fact, most of the chapter-end problems involve mathematics. The math required is not complex, but it will require careful reasoning on your part, much like the numerical problems in Hennessy's "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach". A good companion to this book is "Computer Networking : A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet (3rd Edition)" by Kurose. That book also uses a 5 layer model, but starts from the application layer and works its way down. Also, Kurose's book is more applied, with Java examples and programming labs and projects included.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a firm foundation in the theory of computer networking, as well as a survey of the current networking technologies and how they work.

Book Description
Computer Networks, 4E is the only introductory computer networking book written by authors who have had first-hand experience with many of the protocols discussed in the book, who have actually designed some of them as well, and who are still actively designing the computer networks today.
This newly revised edition continues to provide an enduring, practical understanding of networks and their building blocks through rich, example-based instruction. The authors' focus is on the why of network design, not just the specifications comprising today's systems but how key technologies and protocols actually work in the real world to solve specific problems. The new edition makes less use of computer code to explain protocols than earlier editions. Moreover, this new edition shifts the focus somewhat higher in the protocol stack where there is generally more innovative and exciting work going on at the application and session layers than at the link and physical layers.
* Completely updated with new sidebar discussions that cover the deployment status of protocols described in the book.
* Addition of sizeable number of new exercises and solutions.
* Downloadable Opnet network simulation software and lab experiments manual.
* New and revised instructor support material, including Powerpoint slides, eps version of figures appearing in the text; sample exams; lecture notes; UNIX sockets programming assignments.

Great book.......2007-03-22
Ok, my written english isn't good at all, but I'd just wanna say how much I love this book. I have been studying html and css for some time now, and I already knew something when I bought this book, and what I think great about it is that it's so detailed about how the things work in html, xhtml and css that it's like if I was learning everything from the beginning again, but this time knowing exactly what I was doing and why.
Well, that's it.. sorry for my english.
For both beginners and experts.......2006-06-28
I've taught HTML and e-commerce at the university level for about a decade now. This book is the best I have found. I use it as my personal reference. I require it for my classes.
It covers the essentials. It gives clear examples. It is organized in a logical order that works. It can be used by someone who has never tried to build a web page, and also has enough 'meat' so that those who have been building pages for years can find useful information and tips throughout.
I just wish I could find books on some of my other subjects that are as well written and organized as this.
Ok.......2006-03-24
This book is ok. I had to get it for a class. The writing is alittle hard to follow, but it is a good reference.
Great for beginners.......2006-03-22
I purchased this book to use in a class I was taking. I had no prior knowledge of HTML, but this book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to designing web pages. I found the chapters very easy to follow and the exercises were kind of fun as you got to practice what you just read about. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn HTML.

Book Description
@COURSE = For one-semester, undergraduate/graduate introductory computer networking courses in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, CIS, MIS, and Business Departments. Written by a best-selling author and leading computer networking authority, this book builds a comprehensive picture of the technologies behind Internet applications. It answers the basic question how do computer networks and Internets operate? in the broadest sense and includes an early optional introduction to network programming and applications. The book provides a comprehensive, self-contained tour through all of networking from the lowest levels of data transmission and wiring to the highest levels of application software, explaining how underlying technologies provide services and how Internet applications use those services. At each level, it shows how the facilities and services provided by lower levels are used and extended in the next level. Emphasis on Internet technologies and applications provides readers with substantial sections on Internetworking and Network Applications. For individuals with little or no background in the subject.

Cursory at worst - well written at best , but used, not new........2006-05-29
As others have said this text is suitable for beginners, do not purchase this text if you seek detail of in-depth understanding of any specific aspect of networking. However my gripe is with Amazon, this text was used, not new when I received it. New texts don't come with Checkpoint stickers inside and a sheet of notebook paper with an ad for "roomate wanted" somewhere in the vicinity of Idaho State University and a phone number and e-mail address for Deb. Also Deb might want to be more careful as the back of that same sheet listed three account numbers.
Obviously Deb didn't use the text long, it was in good shape and she never opened the CD but Amazon owes me a refund and explanation.
A good introduction for newbies..........2005-07-06
This is a very superficial exposure to computer networks. If you have no previous knowledge on the subject, this would be a good place to start. However, if you already know the basics and want to get your hands dirty, go get Tannenbaum's Computer Networks - there you will find everything explained in detail.
One more thing about the book - in my opinion the author could have structured it much better - some chapters seem out of order. Also, as I noted above, it is a little stingy on facts...
Too much prose........2003-12-09
At the first time, I used this book as my reference in my networking area. But later I can not keep up this fully-prosed book anymore. At last, I had to change my reference book to another.
A textbook that doesn't put you to sleep.......2002-10-02
I'm a CS student taking a Networks course so I could be considered a 'beginner'. This book is easy to read and understand and provides a great overview without being too bogged down in details. The short, concise chapters make it very readable. Great introduction to the subject!
My only gripe in that the file/folder names on the CD are corrupted and there isn't any support on the book's site.
Brief and to the point.......2002-06-03
I had to use this book for a networking class at my university. It presents a nice overview and goes a little in depth into various aspects of networking. It covers networking from the ground up, explaining each layer of the OSI and the components that compose each layer. I would recommend it to a beginner or amateur to networking.
