Customer Reviews:
Very useful.... a total package.......2007-06-27
I found myself as the Outlook support for a new small business and I had only used Outlook for e-mail and contacts previously. This book has quickly become my total reference guide. It has helped me solve several problems. It's easy to read, well organized and very complete.
I recommend it to anyone who needs to support an Outlook installation or an Exchange Server installation.
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Inside Out.......2007-03-08
Comprehensive and approachable. Good index and highly illustrated.
micro office outlook.......2007-01-10
Too much said about the various steps. Not brief and to the point. Found it difficult to go step by step without reading, and reading, and reading.
Comprehensive, but still some holes.......2005-11-22
Previous reviewer's comments are noted well, but I was somewhat disappointed in the coverage of forms development. I really wanted to learn to move/place fields on a contact form and designate them drop-down, etc. Simple enough, I thought, for a book of this coverage. But even though the author talked about the abilitiy to do this, there were no directions, no examples, and no description of the 'Controls' options required to do it. For a book of this size and price, I had hoped for more meat. No, not to the detail of VB scripting, but certainly more detailed coverage of Outlook's powerful forms and macro abilities. To my chagrin, I'm finding my answers under the Outlook 'Help' section in the program itself!
Most comprehensive.......2005-09-04
A most comprehensive treatment of Outlook. Extremely well suited for an experienced Outlook user, with many details on the use in a server/business environment. Describes the interrelationship with Windows Outlook Express. Probably a little too comprehensive for the single system user just trying to read and write a few email messages. Subject matter is exceptionally well presented and thorough.

microsoft offic excel 2003 inside out.......2007-05-07
From what I dicovered from the friend I puchased this book for, she is very delighted with this book because it has ALL the stars & bells she's been looking 4. Thanks alot !!!!
Highly Satisfied (as always).......2006-11-14
As with all Inside Out books from Microsoft Press, Excel 2003 was fantastic. The thing I love most about these books is (1) the comprehensiveness of the book while (2) not forgetting to cover the fundamentals of the product. Thus, anything you want to do with Excel is covered, from simple formatting to working with external data all the way up to creating highly complex spreadsheets with macros and programming. This book is perfect for all Excel (or spreadsheet) creators.
Good reference book for heavy Excel users.......2006-11-10
A very good book to have on the desk for those of you who use Excel extensively and might utilize some uncommon formulas and/or functions to save time.
MIcrosoft Office Excel 2003 Inside Out.......2006-11-05
I must admit I returned this book, but not because it lacked the resources. I was looking for a Visual Basic book for Excel and bought this in error, but looking through it briefly it contained a wealth of information. If you are not into the writing vba and just into writing functions and formulas this books has lots of nice tricks and tips.
Good book except a few errors and hpyes..........2006-08-22
This book contains a lot of errors which should be corrected, and many pro-microsoft or authors' commercial tool hypes (which costs you your time). Some contents are repeating and it may take for you to finish the book longer than it should, but nicely written and well explaining a variety of topics. Basically this is a good book with few minor problems. With the same money, however, I am afraid that taking another Excel book could be a better choice.

Microsoft Office System - Inside Out - 2003 Edition - reference book - CD, English
Amazon.com
Microsoft Office remains the dominant productivity suite, the standard toolkit for everything from letter-writing to slide shows. However, there's a big difference between being able to use the Office programs and being efficient with them. Microsoft Office System 2003 Edition largely succeeds in explaining the critical intricacies of Office 2003--those that make the difference between competence and mastery.
No one's going to read a book like this cover-to-cover, and few readers will tackle a chapter end-to-end either. That's why the index in this book is central to its usefulness. It's a carefully thought-out index, with headings that distinguish among topics as they apply to different Office programs (in other words, references to coverage of Excel columns are obviously distinct from those to Word columns and Access columns in the index). There's also a separate and reasonably handy troubleshooting index, in which you can quickly scan for problems like "Protection for worksheet or workbook unavailable" and get a page reference for a possible solution.
When you locate the page you want, coverage is clear and concise. The authors assume you're familiar with basic Microsoft Windows conventions, but take care to use stepped procedures wherever possible and provide many labeled screen shots as landmarks for your progress through the procedures. --David Wall
Topics covered: This is a carefully designed and exhaustively researched guide to every user-level function of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, FrontPage, and InfoPath. There's not a lot of coverage of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)--Office's automation language--but there's enough of that to get you oriented.
Customer Reviews:
This is more of a "getting started" book.......2005-04-04
Microsoft Press publishes a bunch of books on the latest version of the Office suite (Office 2003). This book "Office 2003 Inside Out" covers all the major applications in the suite and serves as a starting point for someone who's new to Office or just wants to know the most useful features without being burdened with the advanced details. Each Office program is covered for its most oft-used features. When you are ready for the advanced features, you'll need to get the separate "Inside Out" books for each program: Outlook 2003 Inside Out, Word 2003 Inside Out, Excel 2003 Inside Out, etc. These latter volumes (which I'll review separately as I read through each of them) are truly the advanced user's most valuable weapons in conquering the monster known as Office.
In summary, if you want to get your feet wet in using Office, nothing beats this book. It's precise, accurate, well-written, and well-edited, like pretty much all "Inside Out" books. I highly recommend it to those new to Office, or those who have been using Office without reading any written manuals. This is a thick volume (1000+ pages), but don't let that intimidate you. It's very easy to read through.
Okay, But Not the Greatest.......2004-02-20
This book is okay for what it is -- it tells you which keys to press and which commands to choose to perform different tasks in the Office 2003 programs.
However, because this book is published by Microsoft, you don't get an objective, third-party perspective on the different software programs. The authors are never critical of the software itself. They don't steer you to competitors of Microsoft when going to a competitor might be the better choice. The authors don't describe unorthodox work-arounds -- the kind of things that save you time but aren't in official instruction book. I get the feeling this book promotes Microsoft Office 2003 as much as it describes how to use the software.
Finally, a little humor would be appreciated by this reader. This book is pretty dry.

Customer Reviews:
Good as a reference book, not a hands on learning guide.......2007-06-18
I just ordered this book to prepare me for the Microsoft certification exams. I've just flipped through it, but I don't think I'll be able to use it. It has very detailed sections on how to do things within Word, but I need more of a workbook. I expected the CD to contain exercises, but upon inspection it's just a PDF version of the book and some "extras." If you want a workbook version with exercises to do, I just purchased the PowerPoint version of the Step by Step series, and I think I'll have to order the Word version of that.
Tons of information but not well written or in-depth enough.......2007-01-13
I'm a fan of Microsoft Press's "Inside Out" series and own half a dozen books (or maybe more) from it. I bought this book to become an expert at Word 2003, but I found that while the book covers a lot of ground, it lacks depth on many topics. And it's writing style is quite confusing. For example, I tried to understand how to customize headers and footers by section, and after reading and re-reading the parts of the book that deal with this topic several times, I stil couldn't figure out. In the end, I just experimented on my own. Word is a complex piece of software. This book unfortunately does a poor job at making Word easier to learn, even for someone like myself who was already quite proficient with the software at the basic-intermediate level.

I am always satified with the Inside Out Series, this book is very helpful for every level.
an almost GREAT book.......2007-01-11
good detail, nice glossary and defs. Easy to use and the quality of info is great.
MS Office Visio 2003 Inside Out.......2005-09-09
Very good general reference. Met my expectations and meets my needs.
Reference help book.......2004-03-28
This book is what used to be called a "manual" that came "free" after you spent a few hundred dollars on software. If you are looking for a manual, this is a good choice, but if you want to learn how to use the program with this, please don't. The examples it showed were not consistent within the chapter, so you could not follow along by trying to try out the concepts after reading easily.
I'll keep the book as a reference, but I'm a bit upset about spending money for it. I'll try the "Step by Step" book, but those are generally not very in-depth.

Customer Reviews:
mr. buyen Frontpage 2003 Book is a Failure.......2006-07-28
This book was a total failure and utterly devoid of structural instructions which would take an intermediate person from frontpage 2000 to 2003! It seem to be predicated with giving information in a BACKWARD fashion interwoven in such a way that left me more confused and dissatified! If I were to grade this book, I would give it a double triple FFF of the lowest order. How serious am I, well I intend to buy another frontpage book, and I am a senior citizen on SS and money is very scarce!
I bet the author Mr. Buyen is a self-service pompus conservative nitwit who is 400 pounds overweight!!
jasper.......2006-06-28
A lot of text that's spread out and difficult to follow. Would have been nice to see more examples. eg, constructing drop down menus section provides a lot of text but few examples to carry you through to actually creating drop down menus. More how to and less theory would be helpful.
3 Books on Learning FrontPage 2003.......2006-01-01
I actually bought 3 books: Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Step-by-Step, Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Inside-Out, and Que Special Edition Using FrontPage 2003.
Step-by-step is a very useful starting point, but you'll soon run out of this book. By far, the best of the 3 is Que's Using FrontPage 2003 - it is excellent! FrontPage 2003 Inside-Out is good IF you're interested in Active Server Pages.
But all in all - if you want to buy just one I recommend Que Special Edition Using FrontPage 2003. The format lets you learn by solving problems that you run into. For example, you want find out about Banners, the book not only answers your questions but gives you the background and advise on using the feature. And the author is very candid about suggesting when to use and NOT use a particular feature. The authors obviously have used the product for real-world web sites and really wanted to share their experiences and knowledge.
Very Good Resource - Fills in the Details That Other Books Don't Offer.......2005-10-26
I learned FrontPage 2003 using 'How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003', which is a very good book to start with, but as I developed some skills, I started asking myself questions about how I might go a little further or why some things were the way they were with the program. I found 'Inside Out' gave me a lot of answers to big and little questions that I never saw explained in any other published text (I have five FrontPage 2003 books). Each chapter stands alone, so that you don't have to build up your knowledge to understand any particular chapter by having only read from the beginning. I am using the book right now and improving my website every day. A very good resource. Much better than the FrontPage 2003 Bible, which I checked out from the library. If you are familiar with FrontPage 2003 and want to make FrontPage 2003 your best friend, this is the book to do it! ;-)
Great Reference - I Use It Daily!.......2005-10-02
Fantastic Reference. I would call myself an intermediate user of Frontpage 2003. I run 5 websites and I use this book almost everytime I get stuck with an issue. It has not failed to cover anything I have needed knowledge on. I now use online forms, thanks solely to the information provided in this book. Those sections alone on forms and databases make it worth the money I paid for this book. I find that MS FP 2003 was a great upgrade from 2002 and I find that this book was the perfect learning tool and reference to go along with it. For the beginner, it is easy enough to use to understand and follow along and to grow with. I did check out several other books on this topic and none come close to this one.
Product Description
Microsoft Office Access 2003 - Inside Out - reference book - CD, English
Customer Reviews:
Good Access 2003 book, but lacks coherence.......2007-09-08
PROS:
- Thorough read on the essentials of Access 2003 and building databases in Access.
CONS:
- The author is dry.
- Other parts of the book dealing with VBA and SQL Server (.adp files) frequently assume more information than the reader is introduced to making it necessary to have multiple reference sources to understand what the author is talking about.
OVERALL:
- A really good book for someone with prior Access knowledge who would like to have a through understanding or fill in missing gaps to complete their understanding of working with MS Access 2003. However, it is not a good book for a beginners understanding or gap filling knowledge of SQL Server, ADP files or VBA, which is ½ of the book
- A questionable book for someone with no Access experience because the volume of information is overwhelming.
- This IS NOT a reference book!
SUMMARY:
The book is over 1,000 pages long. Not that it should matter but it is kind of bothersome that the author's picture is in the book at least 30 times; what's up with that?
The biggest drawback to the book is that the author jumps into deep material without providing enough clarification and background information about what he is discussing prior to starting a discussion.
The section on VBA can only be read if you have other reference material in front of you that defines words and terms that are being used to tell you about VBA. In this regard, the author fails the reader and may as well have not written the last half of the book because there is too much information to introduce to do a good job discussing the primary points without having to assume the reader is familiar with all the extended topics that are involved with learning VBA as written by the author.
Overall it is a good book but certainly did not meet my expectations given the reviews written on this board.
Not for Beginners.......2007-07-10
I have been tasked with developing a new database for tracking and reporting city inspection data, permits, citations, etc. I had limited previous experience in using Access. I did take a one-day class in access programing, which gave me a leg up on getting into some programming. The Beginner type Access books that I previously used did not provide enough depth to help me develope the database. So, I was looking for a more advanced reference book. The great reviews for Access 2003 Inside Out encouraged me to give it a try. But, after daily using the book for the past several months, I found that it was not very helpful. The Microsoft website help function provided much more understandable help to me than is book. Perhaps if I had time to read the book from cover to cover to get a comprehensive view of how everything works, this book would be useful. Perhaps it is a good comprehensive reference book for people who have more experience with Access. But, for me, who had limited prior experience, it was not very useful.
Very Helpful.......2007-05-25
This book is incredibly helpful to the relatively experienced user. There were quite a few things I was having a great amount of difficulty understanding, but this book explained things in such a way that I now understand and have since completed my databases I was creating for work. Not recommended for the beginner user.
Excellent information; well organized; horrendous writing.......2007-04-25
Viescas certainly deserves his status as a Microsoft Access database expert. He packs a lot of information into this book and, at over 1200 pages, there's a lot of room for packing!
The book is very well organized and walks you through the many aspects of developing an effective database and using Access' many features. It's also well indexed so you can find what you're looking for when you need detail.
Given these positive aspects about the book, it's truly a shame the writing's so bad. If something can be described in 10 words, Viescas uses 100. Here I put the blame on the editors. Writers are frequently over-verbose and it's the editor's responsibility to ensure writing is concise and clear. Perhaps the editors were intimidated by Viescas' database knowledge and were afraid to cut anything out; perhaps he's given such high status by the publisher that the editors had no clout. Whatever the case, the writing's a detriment in that it makes it very hard to read.
One example where Viescas gives his IT background precedence over his writing background is his naming of the database elements. He gives all elements (such as tables) long, drawn out descriptive names. This results in sentences like 'you might be tempted to start a new query on tblContacts and add the tblCompanies, tblContactProducts, and tblProducts tables.'
While anyone doing major database development knows naming conventions are VERY important, applying the most detailed of these conventions in a manual aimed at explaining concepts is nothing but confusing. Viescas should have used very simple element names in the text, then added a chapter about use of proper naming conventions in your development.
Additionally, the naming concepts he applies are his own - not any 'standard' that readers might be familiar with. In fact, he waits until page 372 to include a sidebar explaining what the little prefixes he uses indicate. Until that point, they're nothing but annoyances to the reader. After that, they're explainable annoyances.
Again, with all the valuable, well organized information in this book, it's really a shame the writing is so poor. The difficulty in this type of book should be gaining understanding of the concepts - not trying to make it through the poor writing.
The sequel of Step by Step.......2007-01-21
This book is the perfect sequel to Microsoft's "Microsoft Office Access 2003 Step by Step". You will learn tricks and short cuts to improve your knowledge of MsAccess.

Customer Reviews:
Basic help.......2005-09-19
I expected better and more advanced information on MS Project. Unfortunately this manual covers only the basics, although it does a very good job doing it.
Remember when you use to purchase software and it included a Manual?
Kind of dissapointed of the sustance (or lack of) for advance users.
Better books out there on MS Project.......2004-09-23
Not the best book out there for MS Project. It didn't really seem like the author was a power user. Some of the directions are very superficial and not very useful. Not a good book at all for Project Server administration. Get more bang for your buck with MS Project Special Edition.
The Best Book For Rookies and Pros.......2004-03-09
I needed to learn the ins and out of Microsoft Project in a weekend. The book was the best reference for me to do so. It took me step by step to learnings all the quirks and strategies when working with project.
I still use it as a reference in my work today and may have to buy another because I am wearing it down so much. It is a very easy book to reference and I would recommend it to any Project user.
Read the Online Help for Project Pro and PWA.......2004-03-09
I was somewhat disappointed. The things I had questions about weren't covered any more deeply in this book than in the Microsoft Help. Download and read the Microsoft Online books that cover administering and installing Project Server for a free alternative.
Great reference for Project Pro, still too light on Server.......2004-01-20
As an EPM consultant, a good thorough reference book is absolutely essential for me. I have carried my copy of Project 2002 Inside Out all over the country with me and have just about worn it out. I ordered a copy of Project 2003 Inside Out the day it became available, and have recommended it to several clients, all of whom have bought it and thanked me for it.
The Inside Out books are wonderful, complete references on Project Professional, but they don't go into anywhere near the same level of detail on Project Server or Project Web Access. Granted, if they did, both the 2002 and 2003 versions would have been 10,000 pages long, rather than the current 1,000 or so.
This book will help you answer pretty much any quesiton you've got about Project Pro, and that tends to be where most of the questions are. As a reference, this is a great tool. The index is thorough, the detailed TOC is very easy to use, and there is a TON on information in here.
To be fair, I have to say that the 2003 version does cover more of Project Server and PWA than 2002 did. However, it's still just barely scratching the surface. If Ms. Stover would cover only the security model, that would be a huge step forward.
Bottom line: If you're going to be using Project 2003, either stand alone or in a full-blown Enterprise Project Management scenario, Project 2003 Inside Out is a great tool. I recommend it enthusiasticly.
