4 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-09-03

thi9s is a quite useful book that covers a range of detailed information. at times i find it difficult t olocate exactly what i want and i feel the book is written with an expectation that you will undestand a great deal of the technical terms before embarking on this work book.

4 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office Access 2003 Step by Step.......2007-06-27

It is an easy to follow book
plain English with good practical examples
more exercises will increase the benefit of it

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!.......2007-05-17

This book is well written and provides very exacting details to ensure a firm understanding of Microsoft Access. I found the CD-Rom with the example files to be extremely helpful as well. This book is an excellent reference source for those just beginning Access, to those who have a more advanced grasp of Access already.

2 out of 5 stars Not a very good book despite the name.......2007-03-08

This book doesn't teach you access to any depth. Lots of fluff but no real meat. Don't spend $27 and waste your time. If you want to learn or master access, check out Alison Balter book "Mastering Microsoft Office Access 2003".

5 out of 5 stars The perfect book to learn Ms Access.......2007-01-21

This book is perfect to learn MsAccess from scratch. It is clear, as its title says, it is step by step. Also included a CD with all the exemples required to understand and make exercises.

4 out of 5 stars Loaded with programming techniques.......2007-05-14

This book is a great guide for advancing your Access programming skills.

4 out of 5 stars For the advanced user.......2007-01-21

This book is for the advanced user wanting to built a special application. Everything you need to program your application is in it.

4 out of 5 stars Great additional resource.......2007-01-03

It has been a great additional resource. I wouldn't say it is a complete desktop reference, but definitely helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I thought.......2006-02-22

The book was not exactly what I thought it was going to be. It seemed to really not cover forms in very much detail. Other areas such as ADO topics were covered more indepth than I would expect. This is a very techincal book and I don't think it would be very useful for people looking to learn access development. Overall an OK book but not one of the best that I have read.

5 out of 5 stars A tool for the mind.......2005-10-25

I work for an energy management company and I find Access has robust data management capabilities that can be put to fruition without having to necessarily rely on outside people. In spite of its purported weakness on the web-solutions side, Access still is the only application that encompasses both desktop and server environments. Obviously, to take advantage of that, you need to be conversant with how Access ticks so if you want a book that will show you how to do all kinds of acrobatics with recordsets, this is the one for you!
Even better if you couple it with Programming Microsoft Office Access 2000 by the same author because they're not a rehash of each other and the latter covers the basics, such as designing tables, a bit more. The author's style is concise and to the point which allows him to span the whole gamut of what Access has to offer to the programmer.

Microsoft Office Access 2003 - Inside Out - reference book - CD, English

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Access 2003 book, but lacks coherence.......2007-09-08

PROS:
- Thorough read on the essentials of Access 2003 and building databases in Access.

CONS:
- The author is dry.
- Other parts of the book dealing with VBA and SQL Server (.adp files) frequently assume more information than the reader is introduced to making it necessary to have multiple reference sources to understand what the author is talking about.

OVERALL:
- A really good book for someone with prior Access knowledge who would like to have a through understanding or fill in missing gaps to complete their understanding of working with MS Access 2003. However, it is not a good book for a beginners understanding or gap filling knowledge of SQL Server, ADP files or VBA, which is ½ of the book

- A questionable book for someone with no Access experience because the volume of information is overwhelming.

- This IS NOT a reference book!

SUMMARY:
The book is over 1,000 pages long. Not that it should matter but it is kind of bothersome that the author's picture is in the book at least 30 times; what's up with that?

The biggest drawback to the book is that the author jumps into deep material without providing enough clarification and background information about what he is discussing prior to starting a discussion.

The section on VBA can only be read if you have other reference material in front of you that defines words and terms that are being used to tell you about VBA. In this regard, the author fails the reader and may as well have not written the last half of the book because there is too much information to introduce to do a good job discussing the primary points without having to assume the reader is familiar with all the extended topics that are involved with learning VBA as written by the author.

Overall it is a good book but certainly did not meet my expectations given the reviews written on this board.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners.......2007-07-10

I have been tasked with developing a new database for tracking and reporting city inspection data, permits, citations, etc. I had limited previous experience in using Access. I did take a one-day class in access programing, which gave me a leg up on getting into some programming. The Beginner type Access books that I previously used did not provide enough depth to help me develope the database. So, I was looking for a more advanced reference book. The great reviews for Access 2003 Inside Out encouraged me to give it a try. But, after daily using the book for the past several months, I found that it was not very helpful. The Microsoft website help function provided much more understandable help to me than is book. Perhaps if I had time to read the book from cover to cover to get a comprehensive view of how everything works, this book would be useful. Perhaps it is a good comprehensive reference book for people who have more experience with Access. But, for me, who had limited prior experience, it was not very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-05-25

This book is incredibly helpful to the relatively experienced user. There were quite a few things I was having a great amount of difficulty understanding, but this book explained things in such a way that I now understand and have since completed my databases I was creating for work. Not recommended for the beginner user.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent information; well organized; horrendous writing.......2007-04-25

Viescas certainly deserves his status as a Microsoft Access database expert. He packs a lot of information into this book and, at over 1200 pages, there's a lot of room for packing!

The book is very well organized and walks you through the many aspects of developing an effective database and using Access' many features. It's also well indexed so you can find what you're looking for when you need detail.

Given these positive aspects about the book, it's truly a shame the writing's so bad. If something can be described in 10 words, Viescas uses 100. Here I put the blame on the editors. Writers are frequently over-verbose and it's the editor's responsibility to ensure writing is concise and clear. Perhaps the editors were intimidated by Viescas' database knowledge and were afraid to cut anything out; perhaps he's given such high status by the publisher that the editors had no clout. Whatever the case, the writing's a detriment in that it makes it very hard to read.

One example where Viescas gives his IT background precedence over his writing background is his naming of the database elements. He gives all elements (such as tables) long, drawn out descriptive names. This results in sentences like 'you might be tempted to start a new query on tblContacts and add the tblCompanies, tblContactProducts, and tblProducts tables.'

While anyone doing major database development knows naming conventions are VERY important, applying the most detailed of these conventions in a manual aimed at explaining concepts is nothing but confusing. Viescas should have used very simple element names in the text, then added a chapter about use of proper naming conventions in your development.

Additionally, the naming concepts he applies are his own - not any 'standard' that readers might be familiar with. In fact, he waits until page 372 to include a sidebar explaining what the little prefixes he uses indicate. Until that point, they're nothing but annoyances to the reader. After that, they're explainable annoyances.

Again, with all the valuable, well organized information in this book, it's really a shame the writing is so poor. The difficulty in this type of book should be gaining understanding of the concepts - not trying to make it through the poor writing.

5 out of 5 stars The sequel of Step by Step.......2007-01-21

This book is the perfect sequel to Microsoft's "Microsoft Office Access 2003 Step by Step". You will learn tricks and short cuts to improve your knowledge of MsAccess.

5 out of 5 stars Access 2003 & Relational databases.......2006-12-30

If you don't understand anything at all about databases, this book speaks to you in PLAIN ENGLISH!! Every book I've ever picked up, has always been in computer speak. This one uses every day problems, situations, and examples to show you how to use it, when to use it, & where to use this software. I read a ton of computer books & this one so far, surpasses all the others when it comes to understanding relational databases . . . it's written in English!

Read it cover to cover. Do the exercises at the end of each chapter and for the first time, you'll understand databases and what all the fuss is about. It's the one I recommend to my students, family, and friends when they seem to have that large question mark looming over their heads.

This book removes the mystery from databases, especially Access, which can be rather daunting. And while removing that mystery from Access, it gives you a little insight to Filemaker Pro as a database & you can see how the two software programs differ from each other while still being databases.

Don't let this book pass you buy. If you see it, get it & read it because you'll finally understand what's been going on in your class!

Highly recommended for people who need to take a class in dB (databases) and don't know the first thing about it. This is YOUR book!!

After reading this book, you'll wish there was one just like it for Visual Basic and some of those other computer books!! ROTFLOL!! Buy it, you'll definitely like it!!

4 out of 5 stars 3/08/06 Review of Access Quick Steps documentation.......2007-03-09

I am very proficent at Excel and thought that Access would be somewhat similar. I was wrong, Access is proving to be a difficult learn for me. I have learned enough to know that Access is a better way but I am still struggling. I bought Video Professor CD and it was adequate but lacks the reference material that an average learner like myself needs. This book has helped me tremendously! I am currently on Chapter 5 (of 10) and it is beginning to come together. The book, I believe, is for beginners but will handle most issues right up to intermediate needs.

2 out of 5 stars Not Much Depth.......2007-03-08

While Quicksteps covers the basics, I found it shallow, not well organized and a very weak index. If you are starting a database from scratch, it will work you through it, but it was not much help where I wanted to convert several databses to Access. Inexpensive, but worth it.

3 out of 5 stars it is too basic.......2007-02-20

there is nothing wrong with this book as a real introductory book for Access at such low price, but I guess anyone who want to buy an Access book need sth more in depth. I would personally recommend Access for Dummies, which is the second book I bought for self-study.

There is not one useful item in this book. The explantions of functions are obsure and always tell you to use the CD. Book Description

In Microsoft's Office 2003, users experience the merger of the power of the classic Office suite of applications with the fluidity of data exchange inherent in XML. With XML at its heart, the new version of Microsoft's desktop suite liberates the information stored in millions of documents created with Office software over the past fifteen years, making it available to a wide variety of programs. Office 2003 XML offers an in-depth exploration of the relationship between XML and Office 2003, examining how the various products in the Office suite both produce and consume XML. Developers will learn how they can connect Microsoft Office to others systems, while power users will learn to create and analyze XML documents using familiar Office tools. The book begins with an overview of the XML features included in the various Office 2003 components, and explores in detail how Word, Excel, and Access interact with XML. This book covers both the user interface side, creating interfaces so that users can comfortably (and even unknowingly) work with XML, and the back end, exposing Office information to other processes. It also looks at Microsoft's new InfoPath application and how it fits with the rest of Office. Finally, the book's appendices introduce various XML technologies that may be useful in working with Office, including XSLT, W3C XML Schema, RELAX NG, and SOAP. Office 2003 XML provides quick and clear guidance to a anyone who needs to import or export information from Office documents into other systems. Both XML programmers and Office power will learn how to get the most from this powerful new intersection between Office 2003 and XML.

4 out of 5 stars Good concise introduction to Office XML and Smart Documents.......2006-02-07

This book provides a good overview of Microsoft's Office XML formats. In addition to covering these formats, it also provides some useful material related to Microsoft Office smart documents, an extension mechanism for Microsoft Office applications.

Note: Microsoft Office XML is completely distinct from the Open Office.org XML format (OASIS OpenDocument) which is not covered in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it! .......2005-02-24

Clear, concise, and packed with practical knowledge. I work with XML, XSLT, and C# for a living, and this book had me using XSLT to whip up WordprocessingML documents in no time. I especially appreciated learning how to turn off the default "Word" display of ML documents in Internet Explorer. I'm also using Evan's great XSLT that mimics Word's "data-only" output format-- as part of a process to validate foreign tag sets in WordML documents. Thank you!

This book answers a very specific need - you are working with the new Office xml formats. If you are directly reading or writing WordML, SpeeadsheetML, or the other xml formats - stop what you are doing, buy this book, and read it. It will put you miles ahead.

Clear, concise, and about as complete as it can be with Microsoft's incomplete documentation to work from. I had it open on my desk next to me the whole time I was working with these file formats.

It has some stuff for InfoPath and Office WebServices. I didn't read those part but the rest is so well written I would bet that part is indespensible too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for end-users and developers.......2004-07-29

I've read the Addison Wesley book on Microsoft's new Office XML standards and this book is much much better. The book covers four applications; Word, Excel, Access and Infopath. It covers both the storage XML format for Word and Excel, as well as the use of XML within Word and Excel itself from the end-user side. The coverage of the storage format is excellent, and that, being a developer, is something I can appreciate.

For end-users of Word and Excel who are just looking to consume XML in your document or spreadsheet, or to mine XML using Infopath, this is a well written book that is worth your money and you can ignore the technical segments. For engineers looking to work with the new Microsoft XML storage formats you will find a lot to like here, and you may just find some cool things to do with XML to do on the forward facing end-user side of the house.

4 out of 5 stars Much nicer way to get at MS Office data.......2004-06-20

Hurrah! Microsoft has said for several years that it strongly supports XML. Well MS Office 2003 is one of the first major products that conforms to this. As you probably know, earlier versions read and wrote to Microsoft's own doc format. A binary format. Third party developers then had to write code to read and write files in this format. Doable, but certainly an aggravation to some, given the complexity of the format.

Which is why MS Office 2003 was eagerly awaited. Now, XML is a fully supported data format. It also lets you see in an easy and direct way the complexity of deciphering the doc format, if you had never tried to do that firsthand.

Here, the book walks you through the various XML outputs and their associated schemas. There is the usual XML verbosity. (No surprises here.) But you can now read, in plaintext, how the suite structures its code in an OO fashion. So much nicer!

Not that the book is trivial. Many examples show how a lot of XML's capabilities are used. Like namespaces, XSLT, XSL and XPath. A reassuring point is that your needs might not have to extend to all these usages. The book also has many very simple XML examples that could be germane.
