dissapointed.......2007-10-05
this book was supposed to be the definitive exam guide.after reading it cover to cover i am a dissapointed.
1. there are a few factual(trivial but still...) errors.
2. the book progression is flawed, the first chapter(xp instalatn) for example refer constantly to concepts and procedures not yet learned and assume that you already now them. these concepts, terms and procedres are explained further on other chapters, but in my opinion it would have been better to start with basics and progress deeper.
3. at places the information is LESS then what is required in the exam.
over all though its a detailed book , but one that should have been better proof read and better planned
Up to the Task.......2007-05-15
If you want to learn about installing, configuring and administering XP Professional on a network, I think this is a very good book to have. This book prepares you to take exam 70-270. It covers the material very thoroughly with twenty chapters devoted to theory and seven chapters devoted to practicing for the exam. Actually, the last seven chapters were very helpful in learning the subject. These chapters present questions covering all objectives of the exam with an explanation of both the correct and the incorrect answers. You need to be aware that the questions don't simply cover material presented in the first twenty chapters. Quite to the contrary, they present new information that adds to your knowledge base. The questions were of high caliber being verbose and somewhat difficult. This is what you want to prepare for the exam.
As a bonus the enclosed CD offers hundreds more questions using the MeaurseUp testing engine. I found the questions to be very good. They were difficult and required a bit of thought to answer. They also include good explanations for both the correct and incorrect answers - very helpful for learning. But, I must say that several of the questions were wrong - only a few, and there were way too many typographical errors. I really think that MeaurseUp (the company producing the question engine) needs to vet their products better.
Overall, I found the book and CD combo to be a great value.
As a side note, XP Professional will remain relevant for some time to come. It is true that at this time Vista has been out for five months now, but many businesses will not upgrade immediately and many will just clone XP to their new machines. So you still need to know XP perhaps while learning the new OS on the block.
You want to study other resources in preparation for this or any exam. I found that answering questions and noting the explanations for the answers is a very good way to master the subject. I researched many Web sites that offer practice exams for a price. It appears that the two I would recommend are also the two that Microsoft recommends, that is, MeasureUp which you get for free on the CD, and SelfTest.
Great Windows XP Book.......2007-05-12
This text comes with a short term copy of Windows XP to help you configure the software.
It's a good book but..........2007-05-11
I did pass my exam but needed more than just this book that it's why I'm giving this book 3 stars, but still a great buy.
Misleading Information.......2007-05-04
Good book to just "pass" the exam. If you're really into learning the right way of doing things this book blows. This book is filled with information that is not correct and really will make you more confused when you try it out. Remeber that "best practices" help you pass the exam, but they do not teach you anything for the real world. I would go with the Sybex 270 personally. Much better.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for real world and exams.......2007-03-17
Having achieved NT, 2000, and now 2003 MCSE certification, I've found the Microsoft Press books to be mixed bags. This one, however, is excellent. Weighing in at nearly 1500 pages, it covers a lot of ground. If you read (and re-read) the entire book, as well as ALL of the test questions in the included Measure Up sample test, and follow up on unclear information/answers with the TechNet website, and of course have real-world experience, then you'll have excellent preparation for the exams.
When reading this book, I kept admiring the editing. Most tech books have some serious editing problems - unclear wording, dubious or flat-out incorrect information. With this one, I was continually impressed with how each sentence was written to say precisely what was intended, with not too many or too few words. That's not to say it's pithy - writing "Windows Server 2003" repeatedly takes up space - just that it's very well written.
The glossary and included ebooks are helpful as well. Only bummer is that you can't print from the ebooks, so when you're studying, you'll need to apply pen to paper, or go to TechNet and do some printing.
The Measure Up practice test is not nearly as well written as the book - some dubious wording, typos, and incorrectly scored questions (like the answer is A, you put A, and the test scores it wrong). However, the practice test covers topics not included in the book (!), so it's worthwile to go through it.
Oh, and Microsoft even managed to inject a bit of humor here and there.
If Microsoft Press continues publishing books like this, they'll be a strong alternative to Sybex and others.
Nearly perfect, and surely the best prepguide there is available.......2006-09-30
I've used two preparation guides, this one and the one from Sybex. MSPress is definitely the best of these two books. Covers it all, the sybex version is too superficial and just does not cover it all, it actually lacks some important material.
This book contains lots of exercises, so you get hands on experience with all kinds of tools. Believe me, you are going to need it! The actual exam contains several simulations, so just reading about the available tools, options and functions is just not enough.
Futhermore every chapter ends with a small case study with some questions all of course regarding to stuff outlined in the chapter.
Without this book I would not have passed, both exams.
Best Comprehensive Book Available but not without faults.......2006-08-31
I used this book as a primary study guide for the 2003 upgrade exams and although it doesn't cover all the material, it is an excellent book and in my humble opinion the single best source of prepartion.
From what I've gathered, the exams changed sometime in late 2005 and some of the content is dated. That however is not the fault of the authors and unlike many of the "Microsoft Press" books, I found this an enjoyable and easy read.
The book is not indended to deeply review the "Core MCSE Curriculum". Its' audience is expected to be familiar with Windows 2000 engineering and administrative principles as well as a practicing administrator. The text will present content that is now covered under the exam (ie: high availibility services and certificate services)and features that are differential to the old product line. So do not expect this to be your sole source for content, at best it covers 80% of the exam's breadth. If you feel in the learch, I can only suggest brushing up on your 2000 or 2003 core infrastructure notes especially dealing with the subjects of GPOs and Site design\ AD-replication.
Subjects that are missing from the book that require research are EMS (in-band\ out of band services), Role Separation for Cerificate services and WIFI GPO administrative practices. A list of references to supportive documentation can be found in the study notes at [...] . The webpage's host has done an admirable job of putting them together.
In final preparation for the exam, I can only suggest Transcenders as a simulation software...accept no other. CBT nuggets has some great multi-media presentations available through their website to aid in reviewing the material and their content is first class.
Good Luck
Good book.......2006-06-30
This book covers the essentials skills to upgrade to your certification to Windows Server 2003. However, it does cover many topics that you already knew from your Windows 2000 experience, which sometimes are topics you don't want to read about because for the most part, you expected to read only about the improvements and changes from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003. In spite of this, it is a GREAT source of information for people with little experience with Windows 2000.
Very boring to read, reads more like a reference book..........2006-05-31
There are not many pictures, and the content is brought out in a very slow way. In other words, the material is mostly there, but you fall asleep reading all the fluff before getting to what you actually need to know. I love reading, but the format of this book makes the content difficult to swallow. I would suggest to get a different book.

MCSA/MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-350):.......2007-08-23
The writing style is somewhat dry.
The enclosed software (ISA server 120 day evaluation) and the computerized test questions make the book worth the money.
Very good book........2007-03-20
This book does not base itself in only Microsoft scenario, it covers networks and security in a wide context.
Well written, gives you the ability to deploy and understand the ISA SERVER, which by itself is an excelent software, and the environments which your are deploy in.
You don't need to be an expert in IT to comprehend this book, but need to know a little about protocols and TCP/IP.
Who buys it can enjoy a good travel through the network boundaries world.
I didn't rate it 5 for 2 reasons. First, the book says, sometimes, you have got an enterprise isa cd, but you have got the standard one.
The author, sometimes, endeavours so much in assuring your understandable of the subject that spend a few pages more than needed. Another drawback is the excess of "plan, analyse, get information" advices. It becomes repetitive through the pages.
Well, that is it, a good book and enough to pass the certification exam by yourself.
MS Security .......2006-07-14
Very nice book , I recommended it for all specialist in Microsoft networking, and systems.
preparing for exam.......2006-02-19
Very helpful for exam 70-350 and daily tasks as IT Network security administrator.
Very good exam and real world based book.......2005-12-24
I went to the MOC2824B training a few months ago and didn't like it that much. If you, like me go to the official training you will find that is very much alike. But the autors included a lot of real world notes and insights for the exam on the book that you wont find on the MOC manual. Be ready to mount the practices on a virtual machine environment or real one if you have all the hardware, you will have fun anyways. Labs are filled with very usefull skill building exercises that will entertain you and teach you big time what this great product is all about. I passed the exam last week with 894/1000, and I thank not only my experience with the product but also all the good advice from this book. If you are looking to pass the exam, this is your book!!

Great hands on Tutorial.......2007-09-10
Great hands on tutorial. The book is so big though that you either have great memory, or study on a consistent basis so you'll remember all you has read by the time you get to the end. I got this book for hands on experience, and got the Exam Cram version as a refresher before the test.
Great product & support CD's.......2007-08-28
I was very impressed with this training manual for the Microsoft 70-290 exams. Features prac & theory but best of all it includes an evaluation version of Server 2003 which is a must for the practical exercises. Overall extremely happy with this purchase.
Helped A Non-Techy Pass the 70-290 Exam on the First Try.......2007-08-11
First of all I am not highly technical. I am a CRM Project Manager and I wanted to take and pass this exam to become and MCP and a MCBSM Profession for Microsoft Dynamics CRM. I do not do any of the outlined Windows Server tasks on a regular basis and had very little knowledge of them before I read this book.
I also found the certification exam to be very challenging and confusing at times; even more than some of the other Microsoft Certifications Exams the I have taken. That being said I believe this book did a very good job preparing me for the exam.
I found it to be bearable, which is actually pretty good considering my interest in the topics was limited. I spend roughly 30 hours reading the text and doing the examples from the book and another 15 hours taking the practice tests. In my opinion each of these three components are equally important.
Overall I don't think I retained much of the content and I would not recommend reading this book if you don't plan to taking the certification exam or using the content on a daily basis. However, if you are planning on taking the exam this probably the best resource because of the content, examples, and practice test cd.
Didn't get Serial Key with c.d........2007-02-17
I'm very dissappointed as I didn't get a serial key with my book to install the training edition of Enterprise Server 2003. This has caused me to have to find someone with a valid copy of Enterprise and it hasn't been easy.
Excellent Book.......2007-01-09
Is very good book is you planning taking this exam and very helpfully i recomended it

Customer Reviews:
The BEST TRAINING KIT........2007-03-20
People interested in buying this book must know it is out of date. It was released in the age of Windows Server 2003, without service pack one. So it does not cover WSUS, but SUS. It also does not contain information about SP1 improvements and now SP2, however, it is a book about planning and implementing security strategies, which makes it a book above the time.
If you have money and are interest in security, or if you are intended to pass the exam, buy this book.
The text is clear and comprehensive. The content is pretty amazing which demonstrates de knowledgement of the author about what he writes. Such knowledgement is provenient from his experience working with Windows in exposed environments.
This is not only a theoretical guide of security, but also a practical one. The excercises hep you to understand and record it in your mind.
Finally, buy this book.
A must..........2006-08-21
I haven't read this yet. I'm still going through the XP book, but if this one is even close, this book is a must. An easy read and well laid out. The accompanying CDs are very beneficial also.
Excellent guide.......2006-02-14
Any book from Tony is probably going to be good. This book is no exception. It is very well written and organized. It covers all aspects of Windows Server 2003 security. It is not quite comprehensive as you'll need the earlier 2003 Server books (or know those topics well enough) to fully cover the test. It includes good chapter summaries and practice labs. This book will also be useful to you as a reference after you have passed the exam.
Best study guide I've read yet.......2005-08-10
This book is an excellent resource and preparation for the 70-299 exam. I've read through a lot of exam books over the years and this is the one that prepared me the best. Upon finishing this book, you feel as though you really understand the material, rather than feeling that you still have holes in your understanding, as you often do with other books. This book is comprehensive, well-laid out, and has a lot of good practice questions in the book and on CD. Microsoft Training Kit CDs are often quite meaty, and this is no exception. I highly recommend this book.
Did I read the same book as these other reviewers?.......2005-07-13
This book offers good coverage in some areas and fairly weak coverage in others. I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book should have been marketed as a study guide and not a training kit. It does contain some good to know nuggets of info, however it is far from being a complete guide on security, or preperation for the exam. I bought the book based on the reviews I read on this site and will be returning it. I can only guess that the previous reviewers work for MS Press.
On the 13th page of this book the author mentions how important the steps of kerberos authentication are, after giving an incorrect explanation of them and telling you to memorize them for the exam. (steps 1-3 are incorrect. check pg.245 of the Active Directory Technical Reference for an accurate description) Like most of the self-paced training kits from MS Press there is a certain lack of depth to the information in this book. There is alot of pertinent security information missing from this book both for the exam, and more importantly for securing a network in real life. The book seemed more like a conglomeration of useful facts for the exam than a "training guide".
A much better book in this arena is "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 PKI and Certificate Security" by Brian Komar with the Microsoft PKI Team -MS Press
I would also recommend the Windows Server 2003 Active Directory technical Reference. -MS Press
The two of these books combined will give you a complete and accurate base of information to pass this exam, and several others.

Customer Reviews:
Great if you have a home computer lab........2007-07-21
Well, I'm impressed. For starters, I got a valuable education from this book, not to mention a 980 on the exam. This book is a thorough course and will prepare you as much for the real world as it will the exam, but it requires a practice network of at least 2 computers (I recommend 3), and a lot of time - 250 to 300 hours. This isn't the kind of book that you read in bed or on the couch. The book is approx. 25% reading, 75% hands on lab work.
I give my money to Microsoft reluctantly, especially on products that depend on solid communication skills, but since the book came with a trial version of Server 2003, I plugged my nose and bought it. I expected a litany of typos, endless ambiguity and the "good enough" quality standards that their software has accustomed me to, but that wasn't the case at all. The book was 98% accurate. The practice exam software was an asset, and like I said, it was thorough. It's only shortcoming was in the topic area of "Windows Software Update Service". I should add that I had two years of experience within an Active Directory environment under my belt.
Good foundation, but not quite enough to pass the exam.......2007-06-23
This book lays a very good foundation for the 70-291 exam and is thorough in its explanation of DNS, DHCP and RRAS. The section on security was informative as well. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars is it does not always cover every topic in depth that is tested in the exam.
Taking practice tests with the accompanying CD is a must. I have found that these tests are an essential part of the learning process and really prepare you for the real exam. Some of the questions can be difficult because they may not have been fully covered in the book. Make sure you check out the explanations to these questions and get more information on those topics from TechNet on Microsoft's website, it will really help you pass on your first try.
All in all, I really think the book does a good job in getting you read for the exam.
Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure.......2007-03-10
I found this book to be a great resource and a good foundational book. I goes into enough detail to get a good understanding of the principals of Windows 2003 Network Infrastructure. While I am not sure you can pass the MSCSE 70-291 test with just reading this book it is a great foundation to compliment a good purchased sample test.
Test Preparation, but also a lot of Basic Material.......2006-08-26
It has taken a while to get this book published. 1230 pages of material takes a lot of time to put together. Obviously the stated aim of this book is to prepare the student to take the exam. However, even if you are not planning on taking the exam, the material covered here is a complete book on Windows Server 2003 Networking. It covers everything from defining TCP/IP to troubleshooting nearly any kind of trouble.
Of course the main thrust of the book is to pass the test, so there are a lot of small tests throughout the book and then there are three CD's. This includes a 180 day evaluation version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition. In addition there is a review test that will give you the look and feel of the real test.
This is by no means light reading for the IT newbie, but it's all you will need to pass the certification test.

lowest of the low..........2007-03-15
Full of major errors, check the following link for the corrections to this book if you are unlucky enough to have purchased it. I hope the authors and the people who gave it the microsoft stamp of approval before being published have been fired! I am an MCSE in 2000 and 2003 with over 9 years of experience and have found this to be the lowest quality study material from Microsoft yet. [...]
Not a good test prep.......2007-01-06
Not all Microsoft Press books are equal. This one is difficult to read, overly complicated and poorly organized. I stopped studying with this book and switched to a CDROM-based video training program, which proved much better.
The Worst Self-Paced Training Kit so far.......2006-12-04
The only reason to buy this book is to get a evaluation copy of Exchange Server 2003 software. I had Chapter 14 lessons 4 & 5 missing from the book.
Very poor!!.......2006-08-15
I wouldn't waste your money. I am only on chapter 2 and the mistakes in here are stacking up. Spelling mistakes, incorrect information and questions that say to pick an answer from a to g with the correct answer being h make it far from the ideal book to build your confidence or knowledge.
Nice.......2006-06-12
I've just bought the book from amazon, and first of all what I can say about it is that it's very cheap comparing if I bought it here in portugal. the price here is around 83 dollars, so I could almost buy 3 books with that money. really, buying from abroad is much more pleasant than buying in portugal... As for the book... well, better wait for it! :D

Pertfect e-commerce business.......2007-09-04
In just few words, you exceeded my expectations, in terms of quality of purchase, time for delivery, and follow-up you did excellent job.
Thank you
Good book for SQL 2000.......2007-01-16
I did not use this book to prep for an exam. Instead I used it for reference and it has been a good source of accurate information.
Not the best book in the world....but i would still keep it!.......2007-01-14
I used this book and went through all the 16 chapters.
This book could use some more review and additions from Microsoft. Accompanying CD barely did the job. Examples did help but limited.
You will have to use SQL BOL (Books On Line) to get the deep understanding of the subject.
Passed the test with 864 (86%). So i guess the book worked.
Not the winning exam study guide one would employ to segue into a winning sitting for Exam 70-228.......2006-05-31
I used this guide as part of my revision portfolio for Exam 70-228 (SS2K admininstration).
I got it despite the wonky caveat-type reviews because i wanted to get some specific exam lab-time in.
verdict:
Though, I applied myself to all 16 chapters as best one can with a single instance of SS2K (developer edition) running on a WinXP Pro OS laptop; It became clear to me that the quest was far from over, post the sun setting on the book.
-What i liked Re: d book (d upshot): chapters on Backup & Recovery Plus the chapter on Security , Plus the portable e-book version of d book included on the accompanying CD.
-What was more like passing-shot: the rest of book seemed just ho-hum, side-line material vis-a-vis the final exam paper questions
-what i did about it: I had to go away and button up specific topic holes/sections of knowledge via other references.
Book References: that helped: selected out were the following:
- SQL Server 2k Fast Answers: Sack ;ISBN: 1590595920
Value: Clustering , Failover clustering, Log Shipping,Security & sp_defaultdb, Cascading Updates + check constraints
- SS2k Performance Tuning & Optimization: Ken England: ISBN: 1555582419
Value: good for plugging holes Re:locks & transactions, monitoring performance & how to use System monitor & Interprete Sys Mon Counters ie: % Processor time, % Priviledge time, as well as Lock modes
- Inside SQl Server2K: ISBN: 0735609985

- Admin 911:SS2K ISBN:0072130970 Values:Backing up individual Files and File groups
However, if u dont have the time or the resources to check out these references in order to plug these exam-readiness holes up, then do this instead :
-Get a copy of Certification study guide for 70-228 from Test Killer a.k.a "troytec" (Version 3) ...google it
Value: This gets right to business & cuts right to the heart of the Exam ; u'll find only tire-meets-road stuff here, no fluff. its a ".pdf" document of 67 neatly put together pages, requiring u to only put down a Time-resource investment down-payment of 15 to 20 hrs of study time. its all packaged rather nicely for one.
use this, and your exam-topic revison will be concrete .
Bottom line: u'll get to read exactly what ur going to meet, see & get in the exam .
After the study guide, u have the basics of all u'll need. all u need now is just solid exam past question practice time .
Select the following:
- Transender 70-228, answer all 135 question; Here's the Important bit :( take care to read and understand the explanations where u go wrong)
- Testking 70-228, answer all 142, or 203 questions (get the most recent version u can find with question answers verified & mind the important bit as mentioned for Transcender.
- BrainDumps dot com's exam 70-228 slice : same as testking.
The only caveat in these various past question papers is that you need to ensure the responses have been verifed ( u may need to dip into one or two of those book references cited earlier in order to have a final authoritative stand/answer to 2 to 3 questions.
et voila! finish these properly and for sure, u are going to pass.
So, in summary, here's a recap of the formula that worked:
Starting Point:
Level :
0.) Books on Administring SS2K & then some Labs with some actual hands-on practise time in using the db application to carry out admin (u need to know your stuff)
Exam Review & Revision Practise (fast track):
Level:
1.) Study Guide : Test Killer -(troytec) Version 3.0 Study guide 70-228 (15-20 hrs)
2.) Past 70-228 Exam Questions practise: Transcenders, Testking,BrainDumps
3.) Take & Ace the exam with ease: 160minutes & 45 questions
Conclusion: your answers are weighted , so u need to choose wisely & correctly.
Otherwise, its very much like 70-229: in that you need to tackle question regarding problem scenarios in order to sharpen your wits about employing/selecting the right solution / strategy in any given problem scenario. this is the crunch of it. do that ,and u pass
End Of.
oh yeah, i sat the exam just yesterday ie:( Tuesday 30th May 2006); scored 94% ie: 948. The pass mark is 700 ie: 70%.
Good luck.
cheers :-)
Do not bother.......2005-09-07
This book is a joke. It is poorly written, the grammar is crazy and wrong, and it dwells too much on events that are not important (click next, and click next, then click ok, and then next...). You would be well-advised to read another book, as well as BOL, before attempting 70-228.
Waste of money!

Helps to get the job done.......2006-08-01
This book alone covers about 85% of what you need to know to pass the test. I would recommend a cbt or transender on the topic as well.
This book just give you a background of window 2003 feature.......2006-05-21
I have this book because I purchase MCSE Training kit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0735619530/ref=pd_rvi_gw_2/102-4874099-2083325?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155) in order to prepare to take an MCSE certificate. Currently I just finish reading this book. I didn't review an MCSE training kit because I didn't read the other three books.
In my opinion, this book was building only the background of windows server 2003. All of its topic just introduce you to use the feature that ship with windows 2003 only. If you want to take this book and pass an exam, I recommend you not just reading this book. You should read the other book in addition to collect more knowledge and experience. The other solution that you should do is practic as much as possible from the topic in the book. I didn't take an exam yet but I just only take the test from the 2nd part of the book after I complete reading and pract all of the lesson from the first section. After the test, I found that many question are out of scope of the book explaination. If you do not read additional book to gain more information, I guess that you won't be able to pass an exam. My case a good example, i just read and practic all of topic in this book but after I have the test i only get 50% of the score. This will not pass an exam while Microsoft require 70% to pass an exam. The topic that should have addition reading are:
- Disk storage.
- WMI.
- Back up and restore.
- System recovery.
- Software update service.
- Group polocies.
- File and print server.
- Server performance.
- ...
These topic also write in a separate book in much more detail. I plan to have an exam next and now prepare to read additional documentation to fill up my knowledge.
not a good book, not at all.......2006-03-17
I would like to give it a zero star if it were there. I read it through but it totally disappointed me. it left so much out, totally uncovered, such as terminal server, which is listed as examinable part. Even the 70-270 book from microsoft press is a total rubbish. The parts covered are not deep enough to help you understand for the exam. For those who work on MSCE, I highly recommend sybex books in stead of Microsoft RUBBISH.
Just the right level.......2006-03-12
I enjoyed working through this book. It was written in a pleasant administrator to administrator style, and I especially liked the "Why this chapter matters", and "Troubleshooting Labs". Nice touch.
What I especially appreciated, is that the exercises don't take you through every mouse click. They often just say "do this". If you don't know how, you can find out using online help, but it doesn't waste the time of those who (should) know how.
Just the right level for me, coming from Windows 2000 server, and a vast improvement on the Windows 2000 training guide!
Bad, bad and bad.......2006-03-01
If it would be possible then I would give this book a 'no star' rate.
The reason why I am so hard with my judgment is that the book does not cover the topics deep enough so you will pass the exam. Some of the topics are even completely missing like for example VBScript. The topic Terminal Services is completed with 20 pages which way to less.
If you rely on this book and you will go to the exam you will experience a huge surprise what questions are waiting for you. With this book there is no chance in my opinion that that you pass the exam the first time.
Another reason why I gave this book one star is that it is from the manufacturer of the software itself and it is more than a shame that Microsoft published such a book.
My recommendation is ... don't waste you time with this book ....look some where else. I put this book away and bought one from Syngess and I passed the exam at the first attempt and believe me it was not because I read this book first.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2005-11-07
I am a newbie to the IT field. I have no experience whatsoever with WIN2000 products. I am familiar with WIN98SE that is it. So I was a little worried about a self-paced program. I ordered the book. Best decision I could have made. If I find the book easy to follow then you will too. Do I recommend you use this book exclusively to take your test? Of course not. Instructor led classrooms wouldn't and neither should you. However, if you are planning to prepare for the certifications on your own and are willing to use the information available on the WWW or at the library to supplement your studies then I highly recommend this book. I have not taken the test yet. I'm still not ready, but I KNOW that I will do well with the help of this book. Good luck to you in your own studies. We'll be collegues soon enough!
terrible.......2004-03-18
Common sense tells us that who would know more about a product then it's inventors. Who whould be better to teach us about that product then the inventors. Well Microsoft has not and does not believe in common sense. you rely on this book to pass the test or to know anything pratical about 2000 and buddy you're in for a world of hurt. It leaves out significant details and aspects of 2000 that are need for a complete understanding of 2000. Yes, what little detail and knowledge it prvides are accurate, but they are so few. Old Billy Gates again with a half attempt like everything he does. It seems their idea of common sense is: Well we charge $135 a test and sell the book for $45 and since they'll never pass the test on the first or second try then we'll make a bundle. Save your money and save your time. Buy the Sybex book for preparation for the test.
by FAR, the worst certification book i've ever read.......2004-01-06
this book is by far the worst certification book i have ever been through. it is not simply worse than the rest, it is orders of magnitude worse. concepts that are glanced over are covered in detail on the test. this happens multiple times. the only reason i passed the test is because of the study questions i practiced with. there is no excuse for not covering the information, since microsoft also wrote the test. they know what is going to be asked. they should cover it.
It's a start.......2003-08-09
I could fill a book with what is not explained or is surfed over in this book. You probably should buy it, but look for supplementary material. I used this book in a class structure. But had to buy two other books to get a well rounded picture of the Windows 2000 client O/S.
In case you are wondering, I took and passed the big test. Further, I still use this book as a reference, but only for general information. For detail, I use "another book" by a famous author of Windows 2000 books. This does not bode well for the content of this book. But without the structure of this book; don't risk your hard earned bucks seeking Microsoft's blessing.
Passed the 76-210 REFRESH Win2k Exam with this book!.......2003-06-01
Very good book. Easy to work with just one computer with this book. I passed the 76-210 REFRESH Win2K Exam with this book and the Exam Cram2 Windows 2000 Professional book.
I followed almost all of the labs in this book on one computer. Great labs. Didn't notice any big errors in this book. Saw some earlier concerns about the Index of this book. I just followed the chapters cover-to-cover and the test was a breeze. I think there might be some "sour grapes" about not passing the test and blaming the book. I never even looked at the index to see if there were errors
I passed the 4-hour, 76-210 Refresh Win2k Exam with this book in less than 3 hours. I would strongly consider this book if you are on a budget, have one computer, and want to pass the Exam. Plus there is a 15% off the Exam coupon in the back.
