4 out of 5 stars Textbook.......2007-03-03

It has a clear organization, and interesting insets. For a textbook, it intrigues. The comic inserts are a tip of the hat to culture, and everything is up-to-date.

3 out of 5 stars Careful..........2007-02-24

This is an okay book for note taking and has a lot of the terms identified, but please note THIS IS NOT THE TEXT BOOK!!! I'm not sure whose fault it was but when I went to buy it it only stated the tilte and cover of the textbook. I had to go back and buy the book elsewhere. Please be careful! As for the book itself it is a thin paperback notebook with key tearms (arbitrary as well as book terms) on the left side and a blank sheet to write notes on the left. The terms are pretty well chosen and helped me on a test. If this is all you want then get it but once agian be careful.

5 out of 5 stars Great bookq.......2007-02-17

I love the book. I am using it for a communication class I am taking and it is extremely helpful and easy to read. It uses today's terminology and is very up to date in regards to examples used and the way that its worded. It is a great book to learn a lot about communication that we don't necessarily learn from day to day interaction.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading Title.......2007-01-19

Was very disappointed when I received 'Cram101 Textbook Outlines' to accompany "Looking Out Looking In". I thought I had ordered the book "Looking Out Looking In". Very misleading when purchasing this. I don't know if something was listed wrong or not, but when ordering I usually type in the ISB # to find the book I need. Somehow I got the Looking Out... Textbook Outlines.

1 out of 5 stars not the actual book.......2007-01-19

This is the Cram101 textbook outline, not the actual book. I was unpleasantly surprised by this when I received it in the mail after paying to have it expedited. The title that amazon puts is misleading, even the other customer reviews are misleading. The only place that mentions Cram101 is the publishers review - which I found only after I got this worthless book.

Book Description

Dee Fink poses a fundamental question for all teachers: "How can I create courses that will provide significant learning experiences for my students?" In the process of addressing this question, he urges teachers to shift from a content-centered approach to a learning-centered approach that asks "What kinds of learning will be significant for students, and how can I create a course that will result in that kind of learning?"

Fink provides several conceptual and procedural tools that will be invaluable for all teachers when designing instruction. He takes important existing ideas in the literature on college teaching (active learning, educative assessment), adds some new ideas (a taxonomy of significant learning, the concept of a teaching strategy), and shows how to systematically combine these in a way that results in powerful learning experiences for students. Acquiring a deeper understanding of the design process will empower teachers to creatively design courses for significant learning in a variety of situations.

This is an assigned text in a course I am taking. It seems like a good choice so far, but I've only read one chapter. The book arrived in good shape. The packaging was very good-no bent book covers.

5 out of 5 stars Multidimensional Education.......2007-01-04

Fink starts with an interesting proposition: What do you want your students to know several years from now?
To be realistic, while it would be great for my students to have a working sociological vocabulary five years from now - I would rather they look at their world with respect and understanding, treat other people with dignity and grace, and be able to think critically about the world around them.
Fink proposes that curricula and teaching methods can (and should) be changed to meet the ever changing educational needs and dynamics of today's students. The text soundly lays out justification for the change in educational environments, and provides a sound framework to build classes that reach beyond memorization and regurgitation. Fink advocates setting students up for success by meeting their needs for core subject components, tying subject matter together with other subjects, personal life experiences, and the student's social context. The logical effect being, students who learn more, because they want to, and retain the material longer.

5 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations.......2006-10-03

This book changed the way I design my college level courses in a very effective and enjoyable way. It will give you a lot of insight on the design of courses that will encourage students to continue learning. I also enjoyed all the reference on the results of scientific work that deals with innovative teaching methods. You will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed ideas applied 2 work equals a new answer. .......2006-01-15

This book is worth it. I graduated from a graduate program (in education) and this information has increased/expanded my knowledge as to how things must be done in the classroom (when teaching, when testing, and when lecturing). For example, each square of information must be related to the other square of information in order to reach ones point with ones students. Education is about detail. Let this information from this book change the way you see and teach the information you have obtained a degree in. Let it take you to new spheres, or portals of information that were always present in the work that you do, but that you never saw because one lacked the tools in order to open up those worlds. Create beauty in the work that you create (in the quizzes, in the lesson plans, in the rubrics chart, in the surveys, etc.) What you lecture must be from the book, and what you assign for reading must mirror the lecture, and that equals learning.

Education masters graduate.

I dropped the grad course I was taking that req'd this book; however, the book itself contains a lot of really terrific ideas and is easily understood.

I got this book as part of my MSN program. I still refer to it frequently because it is a fantastic reference. It's easy to navigate, and it's easy to read. The advice in the book always seems so timely as well.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in teaching other nurses or in other similiar settings. I would also highly recommend it for the new Clinical Nurse Educator or Staff Development Specialist for its comprehensive discussion of the topics. It can certainly provide the basic knowledge one needs to know in order to do this job.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-11-10

This book has revolutionized my teaching procedures. Bean shows us how to be more effective teachers without adding to the time we spend prepping and grading. The students are more engaged and writing better essays, and I am spending the same or less time preparing and grading. There are tips on everything from in-class exercises to constructing formal writing assignments. I recommend it to anyone teaching composition or any class with a critical thinking/writing component.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent practical advice for the college teacher.......2004-08-22

Professor Bean provides the theory behind his recommendations but, as any teacher who has delved into this literature knows, theories about effective teaching aren't in themselves necessarily very helpful. What one needs is practical advice, and this book has it---lots of it. Bean identifies different writing activities for students; shows how to design tasks for active thinking and learning in the classroom; suggests effective ways to make use of small group discussion in the classroom; explains ways to increase active learning in a lecture course; discusses the mechanics of grading papers; and shows how to enhance learning in essay exams. Even for the experienced teacher, there's a good deal of worthwhile material here, and it's cogently presented. A highly recommended book for the professor who wants to increase active learning in the classroom and get more out of a lecture course.

5 out of 5 stars Epic Resource.......2002-06-20

John C. Bean presents a thorough, logical discussion covering issues that (may seem basic) but that I for one, still struggle with - successfully integrating critical thinking writing assignments into my courses.

Bean blends relevant research and studies to explain and justify what works and what fizzles. His text offers strategies and assignments - from short, informal writings to involved research projects. His work considers learning styles - (students and instructors). The author models rich critical thinking and writing - the discourse allows learners to make their own connections and discoveries (while absorbing the valuable resources and information provided) Readers, like students engage in the journey of sense-making.

In sum, this is not just a book of potential exercies - it is a rich resource for instructors grappling with issues of assessment, critiquing, and the fear of grading overload. These topics and more provided me with some wonderful "aha" moments.

It's the "aha"s that spark my spirit of inquiry - and this is what I strive to share with students.

5 out of 5 stars insightful, thoughtful, and full of useful classroom tools.......1999-01-08

Bean's text is a thoughtful and useful pedagogical "storehouse" of ideas that teachers can use in their classrooms. Not only does the text provide the theory _behind_ collaborative/cooperative approaches to teaching, but it provides such ideas for a wide array of subjects. Anyone who values the teaching of writing--whatever the subject area--will find good value in Bean's text.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great.......2007-05-30

I found the book to be very easy and fast to read with lots of concrete examples of activities for the online learner. Though I understand the importance of engaging the online learner, as an instructor in the allied health field I don't feel I have the time or interest in developing games and the types of alternative learning activities suggested in the book. In allied health/science courses we need to cover an extensive amount of material, perhaps if I were teaching a course in another discipline I would feel differently.

I feel that another book "Discussion Based Online Teaching To Enhance Student Learning" by Tisha Bender is a much better book for my situation and offered more helpful ideas (but less examples) to improve my online course.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every online tutor .......2006-11-11

This book is what I have been looking for: short, concise and full of practical examples of activities.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the read.......2006-07-10

I found the book to be a good read and had a lot of interesting things to say and good examples of activities for online participants.

The book focuses solely on the online learner, which is good, but if you teach students in a classroom setting and are looking to extend their learning online in the evenings and between classes you need to 'read between the lines' to pull out the pieces that you need (which are many and included in this book).

5 out of 5 stars a useful guide for distance learning.......2006-02-09

This book is ideal for the professor or instructor who is providing instruction through distance learning. For online instruction to be successful, students cannot just sit and absorb content passively. The online professor/instructor must encourage an engaged learning environment, which is described by the authors as an environment based on constructivist principles and problems-based learning.

One early challenge is to get the students to feel comfortable participating in discussions. The students' level of engagement can be measured partly by looking at the frequency and the quality of the students' interactions. Another challenge is to get students to feel comfortable with the online tools. The book provides at least a dozen 'ice breaker' activities to help students feel confident with discussions and tools. It also recommends that nongraded assignments be used during this initial orientation period.

Different categories of activities are described, including team and peer, reflective, authentic, and learner-led activities. Over a dozen examples of activities are provided for each category. (The authors define reflective activities as those that require the student to share a synthesis of the learning experience and they define authentic activities as those which stimulate an actual situation.) The section on learner-led activities explains how to help learners become successful in preparing and delivering instructional activities, especially with the tasks of defining objectives, defining the type of activity, and planning. Games and simulations are also addressed (but briefly).

Overall, it's a useful book for getting started when you suddenly find yourself having to teach a distance learning course. My only gripe is that I would've liked to have seen a larger section on assessments.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful guide :).......2005-08-16

This book is appropriate to me. I am relatively new to the online learning enviroment and at last I found individual and collaborative activities focused on constructivism and problem-base learning. This activities are a wonderful guide to move learners gradually from traditional rol until they become more self directed. Many books on the topic of online instruction offer innovation and they only present lecture-based approach.

Book Description

As with any burgeoning technology that enjoys commercial attention, the use of data mining is surrounded by a great deal of hype. Exaggerated reports tell of secrets that can be uncovered by setting algorithms loose on oceans of data. But there is no magic in machine learning, no hidden power, no alchemy. Instead there is an identifiable body of practical techniques that can extract useful information from raw data. This book describes these techniques and shows how they work.

The book is a major revision of the first edition that appeared in 1999. While the basic core remains the same, it has been updated to reflect the changes that have taken place over five years, and now has nearly double the references. The highlights for the new edition include thirty new technique sections; an enhanced Weka machine learning workbench, which now features an interactive interface; comprehensive information on neural networks; a new section on Bayesian networks; plus much more.

* Algorithmic methods at the heart of successful data miningincluding tried and true techniques as well as leading edge methods
* Performance improvement techniques that work by transforming the input or output
* Downloadable Weka, a collection of machine learning algorithms for data mining tasks, including tools for data pre-processing, classification, regression, clustering, association rules, and visualizationin a new, interactive interface

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction to data mining and machine learning.......2007-07-24

I bought this book in the hopes that it would help me better explore the data from the Netflix Prize contest, which it did. I had been reading numerous Wikipedia articles, scientific papers, etc. on line and felt it would be useful to have a more general tome on the subject. This book covers many of the common, overarching themes i.e. clustering, neural networks, linear regression, etc. to varing degree. I only wish the examples involved slightly more complex data sets and more pseudo code was provided. I suppose since the book is very closely tied to WEKA, one could always dig through the source code of that application; but I feel that the authors could have provided a bit more of the strictly algorithm relevant code in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Useful for theory and Practice.......2007-05-15

This book is by the guys who created WEKA. It covers a wide swath of machine learning without losing a dilligent reader. Then it walks the reader through using WEKA - a fantastically powerful open source tool.

Amazing.

2 out of 5 stars wrong named.......2007-04-20

If "practical" means having a sample project with the theory, the name of this book is incorrectly named. With a big bunch of text or description, it is not "practical"!

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly practical introduction.......2006-10-30

This book is perfect if you are trying to get your hands around what data mining and machine learning is. Most of the books I have read on this subject want to start with equations and get more complex from there, with little practicality. This book makes extensive use of examples and introduces the mathematical basis for algorithms where needed. The authors make the point that simpler algoritms often work best for solving machine learning problems. Similarly, I would argue, simpler books work best for understanding highly complex fields. I very highly recommend this book.

Book Description

With its comprehensive curriculum providing a sound basis in the fundamentals of math, art, history, language arts, science, and technology, the phenomenally successful Core Knowledge series has become an esteemed tool for parents and teachers striving to better educate today's children. And since it is agreed that the first years of schooling are crucial to a child's lifetime educational achievements, it is no wonder that parents and teachers alike have been asking for a volume for kindergartners.

This primer for those just beginning their school careers was devised with the contributions of over 2,000 parents, educators and students, distilled into a user-friendly volume specifically designed for parents to use with their children. Eighty pages of four-color illustrations enliven the new, bold design of this latest title in a series adopted by hundreds of schools nationwide and appreciated by thousands of adults looking to instill in children a lifetime love of learning.

5 out of 5 stars Great starting point for kindergarteners!.......2007-08-24

Once I got past the fact that they spell 'kindergartner' differently than I would (and yes, I even checked dictionary.com to verify their way was correct, lol!), I set about examining the book itself.

The series focuses on defining the least common denominator of what children absolutely must learn before moving on to a higher grade, and I'm very grateful for some level of guidance. I'm a (newbie) homeschooler, and I could not for the life of me find any kind of reference to tell me what skills are the most important to learn at the kindergarten level. With this book, I finally did.

This book not only tells me the essentials of what should be covered, but also ways to teach them and gives references to other books that I can use to do it. As so many before me have said, the curriculum included is not all your children are expected to learn in kindergarten. However, it provides a solid place to start.

The introduction is excellent and helps the reader understand that when our children are being educated, there needs to be a common ground--things that all children need to learn before moving on to the next grade level. Having moved at the end of 2nd grade, I know all too well what it's like to be bored out of your skull in class as your teacher covers things you already learned eons ago. And if a kid from my new school had moved to my old school, imagine the stress of suddenly being expected to know things you've never been exposed to!

One comment of this book really got me. The parent who felt she'd scarred her child for life by reading Casey Jones to him really made me shake my head. A responsible parent will read a story he or she is planning on with a child in advance, to make sure that you want to and are ready to discuss anything that the story might bring up. Don't blame the book; blame yourself for not doing your homework. It took me less than 2 minutes to read the Casey Jones story, which I did based on that review. It was the story of a brave man who sacrificed his life to save the lives of many, much like another story I expose my children to all the time.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't like all the stories & they were violent.......2007-08-17

It seems to me this book is very highly liked by the people that home school. Which is great. I do not home school my children and i did find a few things interesting. But nothing that i couldn't find in another book about history etc.

I mostly did not like all the "classic" stories and poems. I grew up with many of these stories and KNOW my parents and grandparents told them in a much less violent way. I will be returning this book for sure.

If you don't want to tell your child stories about death, violence and hitting then don't waste your time on this book. I know they will learn this at some point....but let them be children for the short time they are innocent.

Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Homeschooling made easy.......2007-06-04

If you want to homeschool in the easiest style imaginable, this is the book for you.

Personally, I would urge a new homeschooling parent to read "Give Your Child a Superior Mind" and do a little research on Froebel's theories, but if you have minimal time to spend, this is THE book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Key to the Future.......2007-04-14

I first read Hirsch's book in the mid 90s when I started my career as an educator. The insights and revelations his book yielded paid huge dividends for me. I have read the stories to my kindergarteners, used the math activities, and have profited from the advice on what constitutes a strong school. The beginning of the book should be read and reread by all educators and parents, for it provides some sobering reasons for why our nation's school system is in trouble. It also gives commonsense information on what we can do to make our schools stronger. E. D. Hirsch is the pioneer of the Core Curriculum, which I believe can save education in America. Please read this book, but more importantly use it!

5 out of 5 stars A hard look at weaknesses in undergraduate education .......2004-11-11

Co-written by four professional eductors that include Barbara Leigh Smith, Jean MacGregor, Roberta S. Matthews, and Faith Gabelnick, Learning Communities: Reforming Undergraduate Education is a hard look at weaknesses in undergraduate education available to students today, and plans for strengthening the quality of instruction. Focusing especially upon structures and practices that yield beneficial results for a learning community, and in particular exploring means to improve learning communities for which English is a second language, Learning Communities is a superb resource of ideas and experiences worthy of being examined at length. Especially recommended reading for anyone responsible for undergraduate education or the academic environment in which such teaching takes place.

4 out of 5 stars 10 Tutorials.......2005-06-30

10 step-by-step hands-on tutorials that cover most of the things a beginner needs to know. Kelby writes with wit and precision and a picture appears with every step. I highly recommend this book for beginners, but I would also suggest you buy a more complete reference book for Tiger (Pogue or Williams).
I give it only 4 stars for lessons it leaves out. He promises to show you how to quit an application, but he doesn't (perhaps to "taunt and ridicule" beginners). Shutting down the Mac is only covered in the PowerBook tutorial. The close window button isn't mentioned until p.122 with a window with a greyed out button. Minor flaws (buy with another book) in a great set of lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom.......2005-03-17

"Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom: The realities of Online teaching" is a great book for someone who is interested in the possibilities of online education and teaching. Palloff and Pratt offer a lot of great tips and ideas that are very concise and easy to understand. They provide commonsense guidelines in conducting online teaching in a way that is simple to digest, entertaining, and useful to teachers, administrators, or whoever else is interested in the realm of online teaching and education.

I personally liked the way the authors really tried the simplify their views on how to make a successful online teaching experience. Their "Keys to Success" seemed to be very helpful and realistic for many institutions to implement with careful planning.

Another especially helpful idea throughout the book was their tips at the end of some sections. By providing these simple tips it helps readers summarize the section and allows readers to easily review the material after they have read though the book once or twice.

I feel that this book is a "must-have" for people who have some interest in this relatively new and every changing field of online teaching.

5 out of 5 stars Fosters Community Among Educators And Their Students!.......2002-02-11

Growing numbers of K-12 schools, colleges, universities, and businesses have begun offering online instruction, taking advantage of computer and Internet technologies to deliver instruction once confined to the realm of physical classrooms. Indeed, the Internet, so-to-speak, has become a virtual classroom and community where all kinds of instruction can take place - anytime day or night, anywhere around the world.

Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom offers readers a broad treatment of the issues involved in planning, creating, and carrying out distance education via the Internet. In a concise manner the book introduces the issues, raises many serious questions, and provides many solutions to help meet the educational goals of instructors, their learning institutions, and their students.

The real beauty of the book lies in its effort to motivate instructors and learning institutions to think through the issues for themselves - to evaluate the unique circumstances they face and to encourage them to seek more effective ways of accomplishing their goals. Because each virtual learning experience will be unique, a number of important considerations should be weighed to determine course structure, content, and delivery, such as:

What technologies should be used?
Who will create the course?
Who will own the course material(s)?
How will the course be delivered?
How will assignments, projects, and exams be administered?
How will instructors and students be prepared?
How will student participation be controlled?
How will student behavior be controlled?

Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom does a superb job of fostering community among educators and their students. The authors express the importance of creating learning communities were serious dialogue takes place - dialogue that enhances the learning process and leads to achieving specific educational goals. This book is must reading for online educational course development.

5 out of 5 stars A Reality Check for Distance Learning.......2001-06-21

If "the devil is in the details" of online learning, Paloff and Pratt have done an excellent job exploring the promise and pitfalls of distance learning programs. Anyone in the process of designing online courses or programs in higher education should read both this book and their earlier book before they launch a new course or program. Personally, this book helped me avoid several mistakes I otherwise would have made in my first distance learning adventure.

The book looks at both teacher and administrator perpsectives, and understands that both insitutional support and instructor skill are key elements for success. While the authors are genuine advocates for the medium, they understand that interactivity does not equal mouse clicks, and that building learning communities takes skill, practice, and structures. The book is full of very helpful examples, learning constructs, and realistic assessments of distance learning successes and failures.
