Great reference, tons of detailed information.......2007-01-12
I found this book to be extremely useful as a reference. One can find things relatively quickly, and a wealth of information is available. It is definitely not an introduction to Latex.
Thorough companion for those with some existing background........2006-11-10
First off, this book is great and up-to-date expansion of the 1st edition, but I'll agree with some other posters who maintain that the book is difficult to navigate... unless you already have a pretty good idea of what you are looking for. It contains clear descriptions and short examples for nearly every topic discussed, but very few longer examples. This book is definitely not for those that have never used LaTeX and are trying to learn the basics for the first time and/or want lots of long, complete, and well commented examples.
To be fair, that's not what this book is about. It is definitely targeted at those with at least some LaTeX experience. However, it would be a 5 star book with the simple addition of separate indexes for "commands" and "concepts" (which are combined into one 96 page index) and the addition of a few pages devoted to a basic "getting started" chapter with some longer and complete document examples.
That being said; there are a number of very good online "getting started" materials available (and/or linked) from the authors web site as well as from numerous other web sites and user groups. It would just be nice to have some of those materials included in the text for completeness. However, once the basics are learned, I don't think there is anything LaTeX related that I would ever need that's missing from this text (aside from some brief coverage of metafont/metapost perhaps -- just in an appendix or something -- but I know that's probably getting way out scope).
How do you pronounce companion?.......2006-11-06
I think this book is a great supplement to Leslie Lamport's manual. It has plenty of historical information about the development of fonts and types and also the macros for problem situations such as long tables or horizontal tables. I sincerely believe it will help the latex programmers learn to customize their style files and produce even greater looking documents.
A complete encyclopaedia for LaTeX.......2006-11-03
This book includes everything on what you're likely going to use LaTeX for. I'd definitely recommend it - even if you already have the first edition.
Nice detailed explanation.......2006-08-28
For the advanced Latex user, this book will enhance your documents to professional looking documents.
Book Description
This handy reference describes techniques and tricks needed to illustrate LaTeX documents, and answers common user questions about graphics and PostScript fonts. It provides the first full description of the standard LaTeX color and graphics packages, and shows how you can combine TeX and PostScript capabilities to produce beautifully illustrated pages. Following the successful format of
The LaTeX Companion, this new book is an invaluable LaTeX resource for people incorporating pictures into text.
You will learn how to: incorporate graphic files into a LaTeX document, program technical diagrams using several differant languages, produce color pictures, achieve special effects with fragments of embedded PostScript, and make high-quality music scores and games diagrams.
You will find detailed descriptions of: important packages like Xy-pic, PSTricks, and METAPOST; the standard LaTeX color and graphics packages; PostScript fonts and how to use them in LaTeX; the dvips dvi to PostScript driver; and Ghostscript, the free interpreter that lets you view or print PostScript files even if you do not have a PostScript printer.
The authors examine a number of packages that extend or modify LaTeX's basic illustration features, and present hundreds of examples of useful solutions to graphics and font problems. In addition to packages for general drawing, the book also presents specific tools for mathematicians, physicists, chemists, engineers, and people interested in games and music typesetting.
All the packages and programs described in this book are freely available in public software archives, and the source code for all examples has been placed on CTAN, the TeX archives (details on page 497).

Good Examples, quite incomplete.......2004-04-27
Many times in this book I've seen exactly what I want to do, but the LaTeX code is not always shown. I use this book as a hint to what can be done, and then I search on the web for LaTeX examples. I am fairly disappointed, and often find myself more frustrated after reading a section than I was before.
As an example (for those of you who have the book), Figure 4.1 is referenced as an example of how to use \multido, but the book does not have (or I could not find) the corresponding LaTeX.
Like the JC Penny catalogue: a wish book.......1999-06-10
I would have to hazard a guess that this is probably the most advanced LaTeX book on the market. It is lots of fun to look at with its many esoteric uses of LaTeX--typesetting bridge or chess game diagrams, music notation, optical illusions--in other words, stuff that I wish had enough time to learn but probably never will. However, I do find myself looking at this book more than I initially imagined because it is quite useful on subjects such as fonts and the "dvips" program. For these areas, you'll definitely find things to learn and use even if you aren't ever going to typeset Mozart's lost symphony or fiddle with Encapsulated Post-Script code at the primitive command level.
Almost Perfect.......1999-01-15
Nicely crafted guidebook to the graphics and fonts. PSTricks, color, chess, chemistry and music - helps you to typeset all of it, and more. My only complain is that the chapter on fonts is vague at places - because the book tries to be so encyclopedic, I guess
LaTeX graphics bible.......1998-05-12
If you use LaTeX and are serious about including graphics in your documents, then this is the book to read. I've never seen a more complete and readable explanation of using graphics with LaTeX.
However, I don't recommend that raw beginners use this book. You really need some knowledge of LaTeX to understand what's going on. If you're an advanced user, THE LATEX GRAPHICS COMPANION is indispensible.
for serious (La)TeXnicians.......1997-11-30
If you have reached the state in which you typeset with (La)TeX just to ``have fun'', this book is for you. It is fun and exciting to read.

Full of detail, but not always easy to find it.......2007-02-21
For anyone coming to LaTeX from a background in mathematics many sources of help are available, but it is more difficult for someone coming to it from a feeling of dissatisfaction with the results obtainable with typical WYSIWYG word processors. When you are surrounded by people who think that Word is wonderful and that its equation editor can handle any equations you need, getting to the point with LaTeX where you can use it to advantage may seem more trouble than it is worth. You will probably start with Leslie Lamport's "LaTeX: a document preparation system", but although that is a good and authoritative start it is not really enough, as there is a great deal more to know than can be found in a short book, and in particular you need to know about all that is now available in the form of packages.
Fortunately there are some excellent sources of more detailed information, and two of these stand out: Mittelbach and Goossens's "LaTeX Companion" and Kopka and Daly's "Guide to LaTeX" . I acquired both of these about six months ago, but decided to defer posting reviews until I had discovered by experience which of them I actually used more, and although the winner is Kopka and Daly, mainly because it is much the easier to find one's way around, Mittelbach and Goossens is also a must-have book because of the wealth of authoritative information that it contains. Unlike Kopka and Daly it does not start at such a basic level that you could use it as the only source of information about LaTeX, but if you already have Lamport you can carry on from there.
great product condition poor customer service.......2005-07-05
I have no quarrel with the product but their customer service needs some work. I had to contact them three times, and when I got a response, it was a sarcastic one. I never received a shipment notice and when I asked for a shipping date and a tracking number (if there was one), no response; I wanted to check US Postal. It was as if I was simply being ignored. Once again my item was great and better than expected. It was the customer service that knocked it down to four stars.
useless as reference.......2003-01-01
This book is pretty much useless as a reference. I bought this book as a reference for my next big document (I'm using LaTeX for some 8 years). Unfortunately I found that the index in this book is virtually useless. Yes, it does refer you to pages in the text that contain the word you are looking for, but that's as far as it goes.
"Explanations" that I did find are generally anything but intuitive, often enough sections never truly deal with what the headline suggests.
One star for the examples, that I use as a guide. But generally this book keeps the wood of my shelf from fading.
Agree about frustrating aspects, but more depth than kopka.......2002-05-20
Yeah, the index is pretty appalling; yeah, learning LaTeX via this route was rough; nevertheless, short of trying to decipher the minimally commented LaTeX source code, it's the only place to find a wide variety of facts.
Speaking of the source code, isn't it about time that someone wrote up a nice thorough plain-English description of what exactly LaTeX contributes to TeX, and how it does it? That way there would be a way to learn everything at the highest level: read the TeXbook, then read what I envisage. At present, the vast number of `@'-commands, which you need to grasp for writing macros, aren't documented anywhere outside of the source code.
Also, does anyone know the inside scoop on the progress of NTS/LaTeX3?
(Almost) everything you want.......2001-08-06
My personal favorite. I have been using both the German and the English version of this boock since 1996, and I just love it. Granted, the world has moved on, and many things about LaTeX have changed and still are, and yet, there is so much information in this book. I only hope the authors soon prepare an updated version including the latest developments.

out of date, not very useful.......2006-06-10
This book dates back to 1999, and since I'm writing this in 2006, that's seven years ago. Seven years is a long time for computer documentation. Virtually everything in the book is so far out of date that it's useless. The authors also didn't do a very good job of staying on topic; there are many long digressions that are neither interesting nor useful. In many cases, the authors merely give a broad-strokes outline of how to accomplish a particular task, or talk about several different approaches that have been taken by different people, without concluding with anything very helpful about how to actually accomplish the task.
very handy.......2002-01-21
I am an user of latex on linux for sometime now. The possibillities are uncountable with this excellent software. This book touches on the use of tex and latex for the web. Being not that experienced with all the possibillities this book is very usefull. It is a good introduction for converting latex and tex files to documents for the web. If you can grasp all the stuff in this book you will be able to easily prepare all kinds of documents for the web and in the end save a lot of time lost with programming html yourself.
Don't expect to much examples and user details, it has an excellent index and reference list to get you started.
There is a lot of math stuff in this book, so trying to get a lot of formula's on the web this will certainly be of help. I am not into math so a couple pages could be skipped.
Concluding: want to get started with latex and the web, want to make good documents for the web on a fast and good way, this is the book for you.
Almost definitely recommended.......2000-06-07
I have found this book almost as useful and interesting as the LaTeX Companion. I think that it gives enough information about sharing TeX and LaTeX texts on the web, but the chapters covering pdfTeX and SGML/XML applications could be more detailed.
I have found that there is another big problem - with every day coming the information tends to get older and older. I can fully recommend buying this book today, but I am not sure if I would do it once more after half a year has passed.
If you were interested in transforming TeX into PDF, I would recommend also the LaTeX Graphics Companion, or some other book introducing the problematic of PostScript and PDF.
