I came here to write a review for this book, and found that a reviewer below, "A reader", had already written what I was going to write. This book provides a reader with no information, but with long lists of websites to look at. You can access those websites most often just wasting time (like "A reader" already said). Using search engines like Google/Yahoo is much better than thumbing through this book.

Good Concise Overview to Get One Started.......2005-05-15

You can't watch television these days without getting bombarded with ads for on line brokerage companies. What's been missing has been a centralized source for information about the whole thing. This book provides that source. It's not complete - if it were it would be so big that you couldn't carry it around - but it's a great start.

You can read this book from cover to cover in just a few hours. That is, just a few hours if you don't take the time to go out on the web looking at the things she suggests. And that right there is the key to this book. Here is a good start that covers the whole field from A to Z, and at nearly each and every point along the way she points you to web sites for more information about specific points.

The problem with going to the web for more information, of course, is that web sites appear, go away, merge or whatever. She admits this, but accepts this risk and gives you multiple sites (you couldn't possibly visit all that she mentions) or suggests ways to find a missing or dead site.

This is a great way to get the basic information you need before getting started with selecting a broker and deciding what to buy.

As I surf the Web, I often feel that it's like visiting a library where all the books have been spilled on the floor. The information is there but I don't know where to begin my search. "Investing Online For Dummies" explained how to get started, steered me to free or low cost online services, pointed out the important parts of Web sites, and showed me the process of online investing.

This book is a must for initial review. It covers all 10 areas of what needs to be studied in a clear and easy to understand way. It is not, however, detail enough to get you pass the test. You need something more detailed and more sample test questions.

Read This Book First.......2006-12-20

CISSP -- Certified Information Systems Security Professional

After reading this book you can't be considered a Dummy any more. Nor, however, do I think you'll be ready to call yourself a Professional.

The real strength of this book is that is is so simple, so well written, so complete in its subject coverage that giving it a quick read will give you the overall view of where you want to be when you are ready to call yourself a Professional. This book is also quite inexpensive when compared with some of the other exam preparation guides, and especially when compared to some of the classes offered either in person or on CD.

The book is organized about like you would expect with a separate chapter on each of the ten domains that are covered on the exam. There are a number of other useful security certifications such as those put out by Check Point, Cisco and others. He covers each of these to the point of at least letting you know what they are, i.e. the Check Point certifications cover the use of the Check Point Firewall products. The book is supplied with a CD that includes additional sample testing and other materials.

Recommendation: Read this book first for an overall view, then study one of the harder books.

A good first read, but you risk a false sense of security.......2006-03-05

I just recieved word last week I passed my CISSP exam, and I used this book among others to study for it. Let me give you a little background: I've been in IT for 10 years, starting as phone support, and moved on to desktop support, LAN administration, Exchange administrator, and eventually became my company's ISSO, then moved on to become an Information Assurance (Security) Engineer on one of our larger programs. Consequently, I had real world experience in many of the domains already.

Despite this, I think if I had only read this book, I would have failed the test. It is an excellent starter, since you can sit down and read it cover to cover in a day (plenty of white space, large font etc.) and you will get a good outline of the ten domains. But it just doesn't go into enough detail to keep you from getting tripped up on the test. A Section that is particularly lacking is cryptography. I don't think a single question on the test would have been answered from the knowlege I gained in that section.

The CD-Rom practice test is also too easy. I finished the book, took the 260 question test immediately afterwards, and scored ~95%. I then went online to the cccure.org website quizzer (which I highly recommend) and scored a 65% on their test!

Bottom line, if some one else has it, borrow it for your first read, it won't hurt and is a good way to get started, just don't stop there!

The advanced questions at the end of each chapter are excellent. Remember, (ISC)2 jealously guards the actual test questions, and changes them all the time, so brain dumps are a waste in my humble opinion, but this book closely matches the conceptual depth and breadth you need to be confident of passing the exam.

"CISSP for Dummies" by Miller is a decent tool at preparing for the exam. I had thought this book would be a great cram book (if possible for the CISSP), where the `core' topics would be documented. After referencing the book, I do not feel this to be true and stopped referring to the book after the first few chapters. I did not find any typos or editorial mistakes, so while I do not think the book is necessarily wrong, I just do not feel it is nearly enough to pass the CISSP. Everything found in "CISSP for Dummies" can be found in other books/material. Please see my other reviews to see how I rated other books that I used to help pass the CISSP.

This is a great, easy to read and use reference for both non-technical business leaders as well as IT professionals. It is also a great resource for home computer users, and small- to medium-sized businesses who often do not have the resources to hire dedicated security staff. The book covers the entire spectrum of ways in which computer systems can be compromised and attacked, an easy-to-understand description of how the exploits are executed, and, usually lacking in other reference books on this topic, step-by-step instructions for not only how to identify when the hacks occur, but also how to defend against them. Kevin Beaver also includes some very important warnings you need to keep in mind when performing your own vulnerability and hacking tests against your own network and systems to discover your own technical weaknesses.

This book is great for beginners, it talks about the ethical hacker and penetration tests. However it also gives out information that can be used for blackhat hacking. It walks you through a tutorial step by step, and gives out names of some other books that can be helpful. If you have no or little experience this book is for you.

Hacking for Dummies sets a foundation for ethical hacking and should be used as more than the proverbial "how to". When reading the pages, try to realize that you are not just learning true methods of attack; you are also gaining valuable information for prevention.
Businesses, red teams, or professional security consultants will find this book as a top 5 reference toward understanding the attack, and a primer in the defense of a network.
For me, a fellow CISSP, Kevin's book rates up there with Eric Cole's "Hackers Beware".

I think all the Dummies books are good specially for the people who are dummy in the field and dummy in life as well. By dummy in life I mean they cant even use their common sense for thing. For example Although it did gave some good hacking sites but then it took so many pages explaining that you can also hack by looking over the shoulder of a person who is entering his userid/pwd I would call it DUHHHH!!.

I felt the book was poorly written and lacked weight in places. Although the high level definitions were accurate, the detail was messy and the writing style was poor. The internet could give you better information and detail then buying this book. I gave it one star because at least the author tried to make the subject matter colorful.

Real situations explained.......2002-12-31

This book is a great place to find everything in one place. This is the first book I've ever read that gives you step by step instructions on securing servers. Most of the other books I've read tell you to do it, but they don't tell you how. I especially liked the chapter on wireless networks. My company just installed one and we didn't know that it was open to the public. I've heard that a lot of computer security has to do with basic rules or common sense, but I've never seen it put all in one place and explained so well before.

This is absolutely the best book I've ever read about networks and security. It isn't a "dumb" book and it's not too simplistic, either. It's perfect for network people who are supposed to be doing security, but don't know where to start. There's lots of stuff in there I never thought about - like your computers being used to attack other computers. There are a lot of checklists and hints to help out companies who don't have a computer security expert on board. Thank you, Ms Cobb for writing such a neat book

A Security Book for the Rest of Us.......2002-12-01

I bought this Network Security for Dummies after spending two frustrating hours in a large bookstore looking at one security text after another and finding that they were all written for people who already know a lot about networks. I suppose the assumption is that you won't get into network security until you have experience running a network, but the small company where I work only just set up a network and we need security right away. We can't afford to pay someone to run the network or be in charge of security. To my relief, the author of Network Security for Dummies understands this. It is obvious that she is just as knowledgeable about protecting networks as the authors of the other books I looked at (I was pretty amazed at what I found when I searched the web for the NRO, which the cover says is where she used to work). But she has taken the time to explain things to those of us who don't live and breathe computers. And she does so without talking down to you. At work we have already used some of the techniques she suggests and I feel confident we can make our network a lot more secure than it was, without spending a lot of money, but with the added advantage of really understanding what we are doing.

I really liked this book! All the others I picked up on the subject turned out to be about hacking and/or were deeply technical. This book hits just the right balance of basic explanations (without being condescending) and intro-level technical advice. My wireless network was wide open and I didn't realize it until I read this book. I also know how to secure my computers with security patches - which always seemed like a black magic to me before. This writer really knows her stuff! I hope she does more books!

This book delivers exactly what the title promises. Unfortunately, I now realize that I need something written at a higher level. If you want the basics, buy this book, if you want to pass the Security+ certification exam, you need something more.

One of the better dummies books.......2005-10-05

This is the only book I used to study for the Security+ exam. It covered all of the exam topics and provided enough information to answer about 70% of the questions. Even if you aren't trying to pass the exam, the information is organized very well and gives you a good working knowlege of the real world. To answer the other 30% of the questions, I had to use other resources. This book is not a substitute for TestKing or Actualtests.com if you just want to pass the exam. I give this book 3 stars for passing the exam, but 4 stars if you really want to understand computer security.

Build Your Own Network.......2007-04-04

Everything from cables to equipment, this book will walk you through the process of getting your home network set up.

Very Good Basic Overview.......2007-03-26

This new fourth edition of Ms. Ivens best selling book has been expanded to cover the new Windows Vista operating system which has major changes and is up to date on Windows XP Service Pack 2 which again made changes in areas like security that could effect how your network runs.

This is a basic introductory book that begins with what a network is and why you might need one. It starts with simple things like cables and NICs and goes on from there to start talking about the software, using Windows XP and Vista. (No Linux discussion.)

It seems to me that there are three main reasons for having a home network: sharing printers, sharing files, and sharing a high speed internet connection. Chapter 9 is titles Printing Across the Network. Chapter 11 is Using Files from Other Computers.

There's a little bit here and there on sharing an internet connection, but Ms. Ivens, should you read this, I suggest that in your Fifth edition you put in a special chapter on connecting to DSL/Cable. You can explain about the need for a high speed modem, a router/switch, etc. Yes, I know, the material for this is basically there, but a single chapter tieing it all together would be a help.

Disorganized overview of home networking........2006-06-11

Agree with a previous reviewer. Ms. Ivens' approach is disorganized and lacking in any cogent, "how-to" information. The book does provide a good overview of what home networks are, and why an individual may want a home network. But I was looking for a complete "how-to" book that would provide information on how to use what I already own. That is, I am a moderately proficient PC and Mac user. I already have a desktop PC (WinXP, wired) and Mac notebook (OS-X, wireless) which both utilize the same wireless router to access my broadband connection. I purchased this book because I wanted was a way to network the two devices to share files and a printer. This book did not provide that information.

I opened this book as soon as it arrived and started following the well-done, easy to understand, instructions. I was able to connect all the computers in my house into a network. My 12 year old son worked with me, and by following all the steps in the book we were able to move files between computers, print using the same printer, and all 3 people in the household got on the internet at the same time.

I've never seen such clear, easy to follow, instructions about hardware and software settings, which usually scare me.

This book does exactly what the title implies, it shows how to network your home computers. The hints about cabling and the well illustrated directions for installing hardware made it impossible to fail. I had a home network up and going in about an hour, and since then I carried this book to friends' homes and installed their networks. You could start a business with the help of this book.

Comprehensive wireless security reference .......2006-07-10

I just installed my own home-based-business wireless network in May, and I have found this book to be incredibly useful in setting up security and also figuring out the odd interruptions and accessibility anomolies that tend to happen with wireless. I like to use this book to quickly find information about basically any security-related wireless topic. It is written clearly and explains what the various codes and messages mean. Of course the messages generated through a wireless system will look geek-like. However, the writing in the book is not geek-speek. This would make a good reference book for anyone in any size of organization to have if they use wireless. It is especially great for those with home wireless systems, as well as small- to medium-sized businesses that typically do not have staff solely dedicated for information security. If you rely upon yourself or others who are not technical to secure your wireless network, then you would definitely benefit from this book.

No content, no value and a dull read........2006-06-20

Hacking Wireless Networks for Dummies is a terrible book. If you are a regular person with social skills you have likely noticed that computer guys do not know how to communicate. They enjoy being geeky and learning all the techno speak of certain topics so they can try and sound smart. This is exactly what this book is 387 pages of. The authors are classic computer geeks who love their nonsense talk.

Nothing is really explained. This is a "Dummies" book. That would suggest to me that the authors are going to drop the geek babble and talk like humans. They do not. Fortunately I have the computer knowledge to follow techno babble. What is unfortunate is these guys are very inaccurate. They babble on (they repeat sections of the book MANY times, cut and paste style) almost as if they just wanted to fill pages. Many of the tools discussed are known not to work. They recommend Linux and Unix tools knowing full well the "Dummie" audience will not be able to use this info.

The entire book is more of a 387 page advertisement for why wireless is insecure (the first chapter is an advertisement). You will not know how to hack anything after reading this book. The 387 pages could have easily been pared to 150. Take out all the repetition and nonsense (they babble on about garbage throughout the book)

I used to like and recommend Dummies books years ago. However I haven't found many in the last few years that really cover a topic well. It seems like they simply want to put the title on the shelves. The content is not a concern. If you are a regular person this book will put you to sleep. If you do manage to get thru it you will learn very little. If you are a computer expert this book contains absolutely nothing that you cannot find in any forum on the net. There is no useful info in this book. Internet forums are free and up to date. A few Google searches would provide more value then this 387 pages of repetitive nonsense.

If you see it in the bargain bin for $1 ... PASS.

Peeling back this Layer 2 problem we call Wireless...........2006-03-07

Demonstrating all of the weaknesses of each wireless security control that you can put in place, this book proves that Wireless will always be a Layer 2 problem by the in-ability to physically secure the network by it's physical location...period. They have shown me in this book that wireless should be treated like an Internet connection and apply as many controls as you can to prevent penetration. This resource is for users from home, small office, medium businesses, to large corporation's security personnel. This book covers the most common used wireless security measures to the more advanced wireless security standards that are not even fully supported by all wireless vendors yet (802.11i/WPA2). I recommend this book for anyone who has a wireless network or even thinking about it.

If you've already been hit, or you're waiting for it to happen........2005-11-08

There are two or three reasons you would want to read this book. If you're responsible for the security of a wireless network, there are two possibilities:

1. someone has broken into your network, gotten sensitive information or used your system to send out 500,000 SPAM e-mails, or
2. they haven't broken in yet, and you're being pro-active (good for you). The third possibility is that you're looking for or even thinking about going to work as a wireless security expert.

In all three of these cases, this is a good place to start. The book starts with a description of how to go attack your own system from the outside and thereby learning what an outside hacker could get by doing the same thing. Then when you find a hole in the security, it tells you how to secure it.

One nice thing about this book, like all 'For Dummies' books is the writing style. It tells you what you want to know without being either too simple or so overloaded with jargon that you can't make sense out of it. Another nice thing is that this book tells you specifically what software/hardware devices you need to get to accomplish the tasks, and it does so without concentrating on multi thousand dollar expenses.

Good start for industry basics........2003-09-28

I would have titled this "And if you want to know about Space Exploration join the United Federation of Planets". The idea of any book is to impart information to the reader and this is what this book does. I certainly would not give this book first time out to Grandma and expect her to understand it but some reviewers really do believe that to read a Dummies Book you have to be a "Dummy" some people actually have an IQ above 100 and a jopb that does not involve serving food. For people with an interest, managers and technicals just starting out its a good cheap and informative read. 5 stars.

Firewalls for Dummies.......2002-07-13

This is one of the poorest "For Dummies" books I have ever read (and I have several). The information, while technically accurate, is often times obtuse and full of geek speek, meaning you don't know what the author is talking about. It is also what we call CIPO (clear if previously understood).

The best chapter in the book, if there is one, talks about configuring Black Ice (my "personal" firewall of choice) and Zone Alarm. But I already knew how to do that, as Black Ice is very easy to install and set up.

If you are a commercial fire wall specialist, most of this material will be redundant to you. And if you are just a home user, then you will not understand much of it, as it is geared towards commercial fire wall installations, and all the heavy jargon that goes with that.

Fire wall technology, like virus technolgy, can only be learned on the job with those company experts like Black Ice or Norton. They are just not going to make this stuff easy for anyone, and no book learning is going to give you much of a clue here, including this book.

Sorry, that's just the way it is. You want to learn all about fire walls? Then go to work for Zone Alarm or Black Ice.

I like the 'for Dummies' editions since I was reading Internet for Dummies. It has a humble explanation to present things in very unique approach. Clear and easy to understand, just like telling you what a heaven look like in human language.

The reason I give 3 stars is just because this book does not a have a practical development on how a Firewall should be. There are many Firewalls types in the world and this one is just explain in Microsoft Windows based. Yes, This book is not for technical professionals, this book is made for IT managers without a necessity the whole nuts and bolts of a Firewalls.

I prefer this best as a starting reading and if you're done with this, try to look 'Building Internet Firewalls, SE', 'Linux Firewall', 'Linux Firewall, SE', Hacking Exposed series to tighten up your firewalls.

Great overview with lots of details.......2001-10-24

I don't really like the Dummies title, but I have found that Dummies books are very often written for people like me, who don't consider themselves Dummies at all. I was hoping that this one would be an easy-to-read introduction to firewalls that also provided some useful information. I was not disappointed.
Like other Dummies books, this one is very easy to approach, but it went far beyond that. I started reading this book because I wanted to get a good basic background in what firewalls are. The first few chapters did accomplish this. They also got me to think about quite a few computer security issues I had not even considered before. I especially liked that it helped me with setting up a personal firewall. At the same tiem I know that I can get back to the chapters on other, more powerful firewalls in the future. What surprised me about this book was the level of detail it went into in the chapters on how to configure a firewall for complex scenarios, such as VPN solutions. I actually also learned a lot about other, related computer security issues. Right now I don't need all of this information, but it is good to have a book that has information that I will fins useful in the months or even years to come. Many Dummies books are very approachable, and this one os no exception. However, I found that this one didn't stop at the basics. Rather, it went into topics should be useful even for someone who has to set up and configure a firewall in a medium-sized organization.

Clear, Economical, and Accesible Information on Firewalls.......2001-10-24

The authors and the technical editor of this book have done a superb job of making the complex subject of firewalls accessible to a wide audience. Regardless of your level of experience, you will be able to take something of value away from this book, whether it is a basic understanding of firewalls or some deeper insights into the complexities of NAT, IPSec, VPNs, and Kerberos. From setting up a personal firewall, such as Zone Alarm, to setting up multiple industrial-strength firewalls involvings DMZs, you will find a lot of good information and advice.

run Snort on a linux machine.......2005-09-17

One would think sysadmins would not need a Dummies book on network protection. But apparently, some do appreciate a quick course, like that given here. It shows how Snort is available for all the main operating systems. Though the authors point out manifold advantages of running it under linux.

As in being able to reduce linux down to a minimal core system. This may be a significant consideration even if most of your machines are running Microsoft operating systems. Since your Snort machine needs to be as secure as possible. So throwing out optional linux packages reduces the risk of a serious bug in these compromising the machine. Plus, because you never know when your net might be attacked, Snort should run with as much uptime as possible. Routinely, linux boxes are capable of extended uptime. While in principle this is also true of Microsoft machines, in practice they tend to get rebooted far more often.

The book goes further into the actual usages of Snort. But you may want to consider the above as one of the best suggestions in the book.

Great way to get your feet wet........2004-10-18

If you want to get your feet wet or you've been tasked with deploying a snort system, this is a good way to start. In the typical, humorous, "for dummies" style, this book walks you through getting, setting up and using Snort and the ACID console.
The book also covers how to maintain and tweak the system, once it is up and running. A good effort by the authors.

Excellent Starter.......2004-08-25

This is a great book for getting startet on snort. I've used other NIDS, but never braved downloading Snort ofr Windows. This book not only provided very detailed step-by-step instructions it also detailed some very useful tools. I really like that its not OS-centric. And Snort's Great!

Shockingly short on implementation details, Virtual Private Networks for Dummies tries to craft a scattershot collection of facts and references into an introduction to virtual private networks (VPNs). That's not to say that this book is insubstantial, because it's not; probably, you'll learn something about networking, cryptography, authentication infrastructures, and other aspects of VPN engineering. Also, it's done a good job of compiling references to VPN resources on the Internet, so you'll have plenty of surfing to do. But it never explains how to build a VPN--or even the simplest laboratory simulation of one--and that's precisely the kind of how-to information that buyers of this book will want.

True enough: every situation that calls for a VPN is different; and, if the book had shown how to implement a VPN with one turnkey solution, users of the others would complain. But even the narrowest example would have been better than some of the stuff that fills these pages. At one point, the reader is walked through the process of encoding and decoding a plain-text message--by hand--by using a shared private key. Spare us, please. The book gives the vital Layer 2 Transport Protocol all of two short paragraphs. Sections on public-key encryption and digital certificates do a good job of unraveling perennially misunderstood processes, but they don't offset the lack of details on VPN. --David Wall

This book contains basically no information - instead it's just a very very long definition of what a VPN is. If I could give it less than one star I would.

In serious need of updating........2005-06-01

I should have paid more attention to the copyright date: this text is too old to be of much use to anybody. Computer technology changes quickly and this book was written in the late 90's. For example if you already use Windows XP, there is some built-in VPN capability which you could use for free; but this is not even mentioned due to the age of the book. I wish the "For Dummies" people would produce an updated book on this subject.

Disappointing at best........2004-11-27

I found this book to be a largely random collection of superficial comments about VPN's. There seems to be no coherent flow or direction and the few items of value, while interesting, are completely tangential to the implementation of an actual VPN. Even one well presented example of an actual implementation would have been welcome.

One doesn't expect in depth analyses in the "Dummies" series, but they generally present some introductory level and quite usable "how to's" that can get you started in the right direction. Unfortunately, this book falls woefully short of providing a useful starting point.

This book has set a new speed record in moving from my mail box to my recycling box. I honestly cannot give it even one star.

Not too bad, but vague..........2003-01-20

I found the book average. The majority of it is spent explaining the concepts and theories of VPN, but nothing about set-up or troubleshooting.
Where'a a list of VPN errors? How would I configure a VPN session on my server? What sort of browsers work best? Some good information on encryption, but I found it all very 20th century...

As part of the For Dummies series, this book delivers what it sets out to do: provide an introduction to the technically complex world of VPNs. I searched other titles and found them all starting at a higher level of competence than I possessed. This book provides the beginning primer that leaves me ready to move to those other available volumes. This book focuses upon security issues (the author is a security specialist), but also provides useful historical information, steps to plan, implement and test your VPN, and illustrative case studies of those who have been there before. The book also includes helpful appendices about other available resources (a buyer's guide), and even includes hints on how to justify a VPN to your boss...
