In my opinion this is one of the best Glamour's books on the market. I bought this one almost an year ago and I read the book few times. I like the fact that everything is explained on easy to understand language and they are a lot of pictures to support all of the techniques used. I think that this book is worth every cent i paid.

With the things I learned in this book I have been able to go from taking pictures to taking photographs. It basicly takes you through all the steps needed to learn this fine art. The author has put together a well thought out masterpiece. It is extremely easy to read and is beutifully illustrated. A++++++++++++++++

I also recomend picking up Mr Gomez's book "Glamour Photography" they go very well together

The information in this book was pretty good and I did walk away with a few new things to keep in mind. However I was disappointed that much of the photography was either not particularly well shot, or lacked variety in the style in which they were shot. This is subjective though, some people might love the photography in this book, but I didn't personally find it appealing and didn't really find anything that would inspire my own work in the future. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, but a 4 will have to do.

The title of this book led me to believe that this would be a simple to undersatnd book, keeping things on a basic level. I found good information in the book, but this is not for the beginner. The book talks about using helpers to hold light reflectors, etc. This is way beyond the simple do it yourself basic book that I was looking for. This is for the more advanced person looking to improve on their already basic knowledge for this type of photography.

There is a LOT of info in this book but honestly, it doesn't get any easier than this. Follow the suggestions, practice what he's writing about and you can't help but get better. You'll be impressed at how quickly and dramatically your shooting will improve. I'm not getting compensated here, I'm just telling you what happened with my shooting - it got better fast.

This book is without a doubt one of the LEAST helpful books I have seen. It goes back immediately! Not only is the photography uninspiring, but the information contained is all but worthless ("there's a long tradition in the use of food.." "this playfully quizzical look suggests a good working relationship between model and photographer..." ) Far from being instructive, it reads more like stream-of-consciousness photo-babble from cover to cover. RUN - don't walk - away from this one!

I found that the book was very well presented. Only a small portion of it deals with taking pictures. The rest deals a lot with how to deal with all the other aspects of nude photography. I found this as an invaluable resource not just for nude photography but for all photography involving models. I especially enjoyed the sort of conversational approach he takes in his writing style.

Overall I highly recommend this book, the only downside were the frightened looks of people who saw me watching it.

If you are seriously interested in taking photographs of beautiful naked models, then this is the kind of book you won't be able to put down. It's rammed full of insightful little tips and tricks and amusing anecdotes. Explaining everything in a coherent and concise manner, from how to approach potential models, right through to tweaking and correcting the final print, without ever becoming patronizing or overly techie.

An exceptionally good read, a very useful reference book and a fine collection of pictures too. I'm sure I'll be returning to this fantastic book, time and time again.

I have all 3 of Rod's books. The first 2 were all about the information and were rather impersonal in his approach in showing you. This book rather has a very personal touch to it. Its like he is sitting with you explaining everything one on one. It is chuck full of information and a lifetime of experience. All you have to do is read and learn from it.

The book is poor edited and has very vague information. Maybe it should take out the "Mastering" from the title and put a "Amateur".

A said before, book consist of basically "well, i was there and i asked {ModelName} to do this, and she selected this pose, which makes this nice image" paragraphs...

So this book is collection of images with few not to detailed sentences about every shot.

The book isn't very good at really explaining how the shot was created. So if you want to learn about how or why a certain setting was used in detail, this isn't the book for you. If you want to get some good ideas of tasteful nude/portrait photos, this could be the ticket. Some of the narratives of the motivation behind the shot is helpful. However by the end of the book, you may end up disappointed that you read the whole thing. About half way through the book just skim the verbiage and enjoy the photos.

I brought this book a while back and was not happy with it, lucky for amazon I'm a lazy person when it comes to returning things, especially onine. The photos are poor, they look like someone used a compact camera to take the shot, and with no artistic or creative skill either.

There are maybe a few pictures which may be considered close to pro level but as a non pro myself I can already acheive better quality pictures. i expected more than this, there was no depth to the pictures on how they were designed or envisioned by the photographer, just a bunch of random pictures.

I found this book very helpful as there are very few books written aimed at digital photography. The only complaint I have is the same complaint I have with most books like this and that is the movels are all young and appear to be professional. The authors of most books like this almost never use "lady next door" types and all have perfect figures. Most of the models I have to work with are slightly older and don't posses perfect figures. Other than that I found this bood to be very well written and illustrated. The Photoshop Elements section was also helpful.

While it's possibly not the greatest book on nude photography or digital photography, it's a good intermingling of the two.

It provides a reasonable amount of detail on how to get the best out of digital cameras when taking nude photo's. Photo's are good, and the information provided is good enough to enable you to start taking your own in short order. It covers both camera and computer basics.

Overall a good introductory book on the subject.

My Wife and I are amateur photographers and we spend a lot of time apart from each other do to my job in the Army. This book was great for us because it had a collection of good ideas for settings and props, along with an entry level photography 101 approach to the mechanics of taking pictures.

We used the book as an initial reference and as a starting point for our email based photo exchanges. The section on digital editing/correcting/styling was very useful. I would recommend that anyone even interested in buying this book should purchase a decent digital photo editing program to play around with while they explore the book.

If you already know your way around a darkroom then look for another more technical book to satiate you. However, if you have limited experience with cameras and a beautiful willing partner to practice with then I recommend this book for you.

We found this book to be one of those that had a foot in each camp, so to speak, giving some technical and some 'psychological' tips that apply to taking nude photo's of your partner. While the concept is good, the execution was lacking, and the book was a bit light in both areas.

Personally we would have preferred something a little more technical, perhaps even formulaic, showing how (settings, lighting diagrams, etc) particular shots were achieved.

The writing style was another thing we found odd. It had a rather stilted, almost academic feel to it, rather than a friendly, chatty, 'hey guys, you want to take dirty pictures of your wife, here's how..." feel to it, which is apparently where this book is aimed. Feel free to disagree.

Finally, the fact that the author says the entire book's photo's were shot the day the book was due at the printers speaks volumes. A book's photo's shot in a day or two ? They were average, not great, or even particularly good.

    I am a huge fan of erotic and expressive photography. What made this book good is the personal expression of Natacha Merritt. She gives us all a look of how she truly views her world. Photos with psychology is the easiest way to describe her art. Her photos are "at a whim" shots, a way of saving a moment like we all have when we see or do something and say to ourselves "I wish there was a way to save what I am seeing right now forever." The grainy and dated photos at the beginning of her book give you this "photo of my memory" feel. Digital Diaries is also an important and inspirational book for today and our digitally photographed world filled with blogs and profile websites.

    Natacha Merritt's book suffers the misfortune of being profoundly passe just five years or six years after its publication. It's hard to even judge this in 2006. Readers need to remember that in terms of technology, the world has changed dramatically since Merritt's book was published. Digital photography is not the 'coming thing' anymore; it defines modern photography. Risque, overtly sexual photography captured in the coarse, low-res digital formats of five years ago was intriguing at the time. Now, it just looks like a bad (or actually quite good) amateur porn site. One must credit Natacha Merritt for creating something that, at the time, was very provocative. However, the rest of the world caught up to her very quickly, and what was radical and provocative in 2000 now makes her look like the William Gibson of the art world.

    Maybe it even should have stayed where it belonged: the internet. I was at a bookstore and was baffled and shocked at first site. However I'm working on an open-mind excercise so I returned to the book and went slowly page by page back to front. Again I was baffled reading her 'thanks for unconditional love' at the last pages. Is this love ?! no, it isn't - it is lust. Love is not lust. You may feel an intense 'love' in the course of sex because there is, indeed, an intense mental connection as somehow Natacha discribes as love in a passage. She is confusing the means and the goal.

    The pictures are amateur pictures but they are all different. I'm sure there's more talent out there but she happens to be lucky enough being 'discovered'. It's not porn at all except for a few maybe.

    A question could be if she has 'a problem'. What have the consequences been so far for her after the publicity of this book. What have the consequences been so far for the models who were involved in her photo projects. What about AIDS. Funny, but no word about AIDS in this book - bothers me.

    I did some internet research prior to buying the book and I advise you do too.

    Since she is the one taking the pictures and that it wasn't intended for anything commercial and that her goal was solely self exploration, as she calls it, I decided the book's ok since it is her account of her sex experience where the other person is also an important part of it. The physical sex connection and the continous thrills and mysterious wonders she finds/found in it. Not forced by someone else or by any mentally destructive porn industry which is really deranged these days.

    Natacha Merritt's Digital Diaries is less an art book of nude photos than a raw and honest look --- some would say peek --- into a young woman's sexuality. It is not just a look, but a visual documentation of sexual experimentation including both a casual sexual situations and more fetishist imagery.

    Digital Diaries is also very sexy just like its author-photographer. Natacha doesn't convey a shy personality, but actually comes off as a very liberated and aggressive young woman. Her book is not for everyone and certainly not for someone who doesn't have an open mind. Those who are willing to explore the many faces of sexuality, they can't go wrong by acquiring Ms. Merritt's Digital Diaries.

    It is a book for you who want to see how you can use software such as Painter (formerly known as Fractal Painter) to transform photos into your fantasies. It is about techniques and creativity but it is not a show-off of fantastic illustrations. The illustrations are far removed from artist like Vargas, Vallejo, or any of the old pinup masters. So, if you look for something like that don't bother. It is not a book of mastery of photoshop either, it really is more of a book using computers to twist and deform images, transform and filter them.

    The main theme is nuditity, without that the book would have no interest at all to many. However if you skip the pictures and read the text you can find some valuable tips and tricks, but you need to be able to bear with that you don't like or aren't interested in.

    If you want nice pictures look elsewhere, if you are after pinup artistry look at the various pinup books about artists such as Vargas, if you want "modern art" psychadelic pictures you may want to look in this book...

    I have no experience in nude photography, and my knowledge is limited to an evening's lecture given in 1974 by Peter Gowland. Mr. Gowland was a photographer for Playboy magazine, and lectured on glamour photography, one of the six topics covered in a photo seminar. I learned quite a lot, including that women with different body types can be made to look better or worse depending on the angle from which they are photographed. I'd just learned about special effects, three years before the first Star Wars movie.

    Jim Zuckerman's book is also concerned with special effects, namely those created with digital photography. About half of the book is graphics. Every page either contains a graphic image or faces a graphic image. This is a book to be looked at and admired as much as read.

    The text covers a number of topics, including setting up a digital operation, inputting photos, and working with them. He concludes with a chapter on marketing digital photos of nudes. The discussion isn't in depth. The book devotes more discussion to the photos and how the author made them.

    He uses Adobe Photoshop and MetaCreations Painter, and writes within that context. His explanations can be easily transferred to most other packages such as Corel Photo-Paint. However, this book shouldn't be used to learn those packages, again because the discussion is superficial. Use the book, instead, as a cookbook as you try to create similar effects.

    The visual aspect of this book is very impressive. There are, admittedly, a couple of these fantasy nudes that I wouldn't want to meet in a dream on a dark and stormy night. Women, I think, are a bit like sunsets. Each is different, and yet each can be beautiful in her, or its, own way. The author captures that beauty and accents it in various ways to produce striking images.

    Jim Zuckerman is a professional photographer and writes for those using the same advanced technology. He doesn't seem to be addressing today's amateur with a digital camera. I don't believe he used a digital camera to produce any of the photos in this book, written in 1998. Even so, an amateur who knows a little Adobe Photoshop or a similar package should be able to produce similar effects by following his discussions.

    This book is about digital effects. That is, there's no discussion of photographic technique. The photos are assumed to be already taken.

    Why should you buy this book? First, to admire Mr. Zuckerman's work, and much of it is very good. Second, you may get ideas that can be applied to your own photos. They don't even have to be nudes. You can apply these techniques to the clothed, to children, to sunsets, and to the family pet. I rate it as a three instead of a five, because it's not written for digital photographers like me.
