2 out of 5 stars Lack of explanation and missing chapters on CD.......2007-07-13

1. There isn't rational division of subjects,
the author do not separate the fields of knowledge as
between scientific, commercial, and so on.
2. There isn't step by step method to build the charts
3. There isn't chapters 11,13 and 14 in the CD that comes with the book.

Lack of organization, lack of methodology, and missing parts.

An excellent reference book for those serious about getting the most out of Excel.

4 out of 5 stars Oooh, Aaaah. How did he do that? .......2006-07-07

If you ever wondered, How'd they do that? This book goes behind the scenes of creating those professional looking charts your colleagues will envy. If I were to plot this book on the X and Y axis, one being cool, and the other being useful, this is a good balance between the two with a majority of the r values along a very focused positive line. (sorry, nerd joke)

This book is solely dedicated to creating those eye catching charts that people (guys, being a visual animal) really dig. It does what it is supposed to do in that it focuses nearly all the content of the book on creating those little jems. This is one of those books that you will want to accompany all those other Excel books you will want around as a reference. This is definitely for the medium to advanced level user. I would recommend that this book be one of three or Four. Others to complete the set would be:

Excel 2003 Formulas by John Walkenbach
Excel Data Analysis: Your Visual Blueprint for Creating and Analyzing Data, Charts and PivotTables by Jinjer Simon and Jinjer Simon
and
Microsoft Excel Data Analysis and Business Modeling by Wayne L. Winston

Being an experienced Excel user, I was surprised to learn a few helpful tips in the 1st chapter alone (which I was planning to skip as it is just the basics). I was hoping for more examples of really effective, professional chart designs. There are some, but not too many that knock your socks off.

Book Description

Excel is a spreadsheet / data analysis tool attached to the Microsoft Office suite and is available in all Office offerings. Office holds 80-900f the market share for productivity suites. Though many consumers know the basics of using Excel, they may not know the full power of the program. With Excel, you can harness the power of your data, manipulate it to suit your needs, and achieve more by doing less work. Charts are interactive, allowing the consumer to tweak results with the click of a mouse. Pivot tables allow you to fuse data from several sources into one document. Excel has an enhanced Find function, allowing users to easily search entire workbooks, and search worksheets by cell format. Excel supports XML as a file format for easy importing or exporting of XML data. Excel also includes enhancements for saving files as Web pages, and enhancements to Pivot Tables.

4 out of 5 stars Blueprint for Excel Data Analysis Follows Through.......2007-07-06

In regard to content and functionality, Jinjer Simon's book is a more than adequate text that takes the reader from the rudimentary to the intermediate/advanced techniques in each of the areas of Excel data analysis that is covered. For the most part, the format is concise and clear. The association between text and spreadsheet illustrations is well done. Appendixes A and B in the back are helpful in quick referencing: Excel functions (B) and VBA statements, VBA functions, and Excel Events. The CD does an adequate job of providing some but not all the examples that I would have liked to see. I do appreciate the data analysis software trial tools offered on the CD. Its always nice to be able to kick the tires before purchasing or recommending additional software.

In regard to real world application, I have found Chapters 5: Working with External Data , and Chapter 11: Using the Analysis Tool Packs Add-ins as a good reference guide to small business auditing in Excel. The definitions, concepts and instructions are easy to communicate to the small business user and staff..

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-05-12

This is the best book I have found for excel. Quick, with just enough information to find almost anything to get you on the right track. Not for the beginner but more for the intermediate.

3 out of 5 stars The Joys of Excel.......2006-09-05

This book has mixed qualities. It is 'good' from the standpoint of being succinct in the explanations it does give.

It is 'not good' from the standpoint of being cluttered by the meaningless effort to make it appear as a series of blueprints. This is simply more 'cutsie' than helpful.

The chapters have no identifiers; the various statistical tests -- certainly more powerful than the average person needs --are not explained with any depth.

The entire book gives the appearance of having been thrown together.

5 out of 5 stars A good reference, but not for "anybody"; allow me to explain.......2003-09-20

First of all I have to confess that this book was acquired under the conditions that I probably know 90% of the materials covered in the book. Thus my interest is in the 10% I am not aware of and the other 10% if there are alternative ways to solve problems better than I am doing now.

In this regards, I am satisfied. However if you are looking for learning simple "how-to"s like conditional formula, creating a chart, you would be disappointed since this book covers too much depth for beginners and it becomes easy to get lost in the sea of information.

5 out of 5 stars Quick and Dirty- but Immensely Practical.......2003-09-18

The "Read Less - Learn More" trademark on the cover encapsulates the essence of what any reader can get out of this very non-traditional software user's guide.

Although I am an MBA grad and am knowledgeable of data analysis techniques, I had always considered myself a novice user of Excel. I recently found myself in a predicament where I had to quickly learn the more complicated Excel features of data analysis in preparation for an interview for a position with a market research firm. In a panic, I went to the local B&N bookstore and bought a copy of the old stand-by Dummies Series- "Excel Data Analysis" (I'll refer to it as "DS"), as well as the book in this review (I'll refer to it as Visual Blueprint, "VB").

The thing about this book that really appealed to me was the logical and clean (uncluttered) explanation of each of the topics presented. It's a very user-friendly manual to follow along with the use of a computer (to go through the exercises).

Progressive screen-shots are always located at the bottom half of each page, in successive order from left to right with clearly labeled numbered steps to follow. The examples that are shown in the screen shots are simple but very illustrative.

On the top half of each left page is an introduction of the topic being covered and what the main processes are to accomplish the particular task. On the top half of each right page are additional methods of application and extra hints and descriptions of the syntaxes for functions that can be used.

The arrangement of the graphics and the text work very well together and allow the reader to efficiently grasp each of the concepts being presented. What would normally be covered by a traditional user's manual in five to ten pages (reading from top to bottom- large text sections interspersed by graphics), this reference does the same in either two pages or four pages maximum. The way the editors have laid out this manual was very clever; not only does the reader have a lot less pages to get lost in (especially when trying to work through the examples with a computer) but also the topics are presented concisely and as simply as possible.

I relied heavily on this book to prepare myself for an Excel test given by the company I was interviewing with. I spent at least 90% of my time referring to VB, and where necessary, I spent 10% of my time referring to DS for supplementary information. I studied over a period of one week and passed the test well enough to be hired!

As enthusiastic as I am about this book, it is far from perfect with regards to being an ultimate and comprehensive manual for Excel. (That said, however, the Appendices are full of useful information...keystroke and navigation shortcuts as well as a handy reference for VBA and function syntaxes / commands....much more than is included in DS.) Additionally, as another reviewer had written previously, I can corroborate that I had found a few minor errors (formula calculations in examples, syntaxes), but not in such a large amount as to dissuaded one from using this book. My other negative is that the examples provided on the included CD were poorly referenced in the Manual; some examples, I couldn't find on the CD. Again, this didn't happen often.

I gave this book a perfect score, not because it is an authoritative and fully comprehensive manual on Excel Data Analysis (it isn't), but because it delivers on empowering readers to learn the software in much less time than traditional manuals can deliver. VB is quick and dirty- but it works!

3 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Pivot Tabling.......2007-06-04

This book contains the basics of Excel pivot table construction. It shows the components of pivot tables and charts and how to use them to create simple pivots. However, it does not provide much insight into the data analysis aspects of pivoting data nor does it go into depth conceptually enough for a book dedicated to pivot tables. After studying this book, you may find yourself looking for more detail and insight.

Recommended with reservation. dw

4 out of 5 stars Clean and useful.......2006-08-06

While I already use pivot's extensively, a few hours with this book and I'm already excited about taking them to the next level.

I don't know vba extensively - just record macros and sometimes tweak the code. However, the info here about automating pivots with VBA could really make a difference in the work I do.

This was easy to use - and will be a reference on my desk going forward.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2006-09-30

Excel PivotTables and PivotCharts are widely used in the financial industry and those who intend to work in there must at least have some rudimentary knowledge of how to create or use them. This book gives a good introduction to the subject and is readily accessible to all who need learn it, even those readers who are not adept in Visual Basic. The latter is not really needed to create an effective PivotTable, but those readers who know Visual Basic will be able to create more customized PivotTables. Readers who need refreshing in Visual Basic will find a brief overview of it in one of the appendices to the book. Excel of course is not the tool of use if one is manipulating hundreds of megabytes of data, but it is, again, ubiquitous in finance and not likely to go away anytime soon. The author though shows how PivotTables can be constructed from large data cubes, with particular attention paid to OLAP cubes. Data modeling and business intelligence are now undergoing and explosion in all phases of business and industry, and PivotTables can be useful in these areas, even though they cannot be expected to handle large data sets. For small-to-medium data sets however, PivotTables are easily built and are an excellent way of reporting information to managers, team leaders, and other individuals who need a compact and visual representation of data. It will be interesting to see if some of the tools now being developed for business intelligence will replace PivotTables or even Excel for information reporting. Information-reporting tools definitely need to be "adaptive" in the sense of being able to deal with data as it comes into the business or laboratory. This means that these tools cannot be "brittle" and must be able to handle data that they have not seen before and then structure it automatically according to the needs of the business. PivotTables cannot do that at present, and so it is probable that they will take a back seat to the new information-reporting tools that are sensitive to the semantics of data, and can do so without the need of customized code or the intervention of a human programmer.

5 out of 5 stars PivotTables for skill Excel users.......2006-09-05

I think this book is great and helped me a lot to master both PivotTables and PivotCharts.

Before this book, I knew Excel very well and only the Pivot features were unkown to me. I like this book because it does not go over basic feature of Excel. The author assumes that you already know Excel very well.

If you do not feel very confortable with Excel, do not buy this book. I am pretty sure you will be very disappointed. However, I do not think an Excel beginner would be interested in learning about PivotTables at the first place.

In conclusion, if you want a solid book on PivotTables and PivotCharts and you know Excel very well, this is a great book. I would say this is THE book for you. I am very happy by this book, so will you.

Book Description

If you're using a computer to generate charts for meetings and reports, you don't have to be taught how to lie-you're already doing it. 4 out of 5 stars Good starter book for Excel.......2006-05-30

I was looking around to find a book that does a good introduction to Excel with screenshots that I wanted to suggest for a friend. This is a nice book to read and get to know Excel step by step.
The author takes you through a step by step approach with an example to create a budget excel sheet.

Pros: Very good starter book
Cons: There could have been more examples.

There is a sample chapter available on the publisher's site and example workbooks are available on the author's website.

5 out of 5 stars A good beginning at using Excel.......2005-08-03

I went through this book in a morning, iBook in my lap and book on the arm of the recliner. I am converting from AppleWorks to Excel for my spreadsheet needs and found that the short length, clear screen shots, and availability of the the changing versions of the spreadsheet on the website made this very attractive to me. I feel like I have learned a lot and accomplished a lot, even though I will never make a budget spreadsheet like the example created in the book. I really liked the Mac and Windows screenshots side by side because so many Excel books only present the Windows version.

This book is basic and very easy to follow. I would recommend it to beginners.
