Book Description

Combining two popular titles in one value-priced edition, Before and After Getting Your Puppy is a simple, practical guide for anyone bringing a new puppy into the home. In clear steps, with helpful photos and easy-to-follow training deadlines, Dr. Ian Dunbar, who pioneered puppy classes and a loving style of dog training in the 1970s, presents a structured yet playful and humorous plan for raising a wonderful dog. The guide is based on six developmental deadlines: completing owner education and preparation, assessing a puppy's prior socialization and education, teaching errorless house-training and chewtoy-training, completing a socialization program of meeting strange dogs and people, learning bite inhibition, and continuing a program of ongoing training. In the first half of the book, Dr. Dunbar focuses on what the owner needs to know to select a great puppy. In the second half, he presents the crucial lessons the puppy must be taught during its impressionable early development — using a kind, positive approach that, over time, has been proven the most effective.

3 out of 5 stars A bit overwhelming.......2007-09-13

This book made me feel a bit overwhelmed. It has been a while since I had a puppy and a dog trainer recommended this book. Dr. Dunbar says you need your puppy to do so many things before the puppy is three to four months old ( ex. Introduce the puppy to 100 people before its three months old ). My puppy was two months old. To make myself less overwhelmed I'm taking one thing at a time and as for the people, there trickling in. I think he means well, he just comes across the wrong way.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for all considering a puppy.......2007-07-20

Dogs and humans alike would benefit greatly if potential dog owners would all read this book! Lots of vital information, well presented, a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful for 1st time puppy owner.......2007-06-02

I bought this book after reading several recommendations on AMAZON. The book was very informative as to painting a picture of what to expect with a new puppy. Some of Dunbar's recommendations are very unrealistic though. Such has having your dog introduced to many different people every day. Overall, I found it very useful.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Help for You and Your New Puppy.......2007-05-30

I bought this book after reviewing some of the articles on the [...]website, which offers a preview of some of the key points of the book. I did read many of the reviews here and felt that the negative comments were somewhat over-reactive.

From my perspective, the book not only makes sense about how to raise a puppy, but also about how to raise a child! Why waste time trying to teach kids or dogs what is wrong, until they eventually figure out what is right? That seems really inefficient, now that I know the "lure-reward" technique. This technique lets you use the essential nature of the dog to train it to do what you want it to do: pee, chew, and poop where you want it to, for instance. Walk calmly on leash, for another. The trick is to not fall into the trap of thinking that a few weeks of short and long-term confinement is somehow cruel to the dog. Like children, dogs respond quickly to a consistent routine. It DOES require YOU to be consistent and to have discipline, and I definitely figured out where I was being lazy and too lax, and whenever I went back to the tighter crate schedule, things improved immediately. I realized that I confused a few days of successful potty events with "success" in overall training and went from confinement to total lack of restraint, so I referred to the book again and made some corrections.

Here are a couple of tips that helped make this book so useful for me. First, I had a consultation with a pet dog trainer who knew about (and recommended) Dunbar's technique. This really helped me when addressing the issues that I felt were not explained in the book (more on that later). Secondly, while I took Dunbar's stern advice as the kind of advice someone gives to people who might not pay attention...that is, I didn't take him quite so seriously. So, when he says that your dog needs to meet over 100 people in his first month (or whatever), I took that as the general message: socialize your dog as much as you possibly can. We have a really small house and we aren't hugely social, but I was surprised to find that I could make a list of 100 people pretty easily. They haven't all been over to my house, but I've been out and about and exposed my pup to a lot of different people, and I could see the change in about 2 weeks! And, I realized too that this socialization has to continue through adolescence, the difficult stage (again, think of children). I also found that "training" your dog to be OK when you are not around was particularly practical and helpful. It not only reduced my dog's anxiety, but mine as well, since it gave me a method to work with the dog to gradually introduce him to "alone" time, which will definitely be a part of his life. It also helped me to be aware of where I might be inadvertently feeding into the dog's anxious attitude when I returned home (or got him out of his crate).

The sit, lay down trick is a snap and I even successfully tried it on an adult pitbull that wouldn't lay down for its owner!

What I also found interesting was that the tips I learned in the book and shared with my other dog-owning friends helped them when it came to their adult dogs! I think that the Cesar Milan method can be quite effective, but it is based solely on dominance, and the lure-reward method can work wonderfully too in many situations (such as getting your dog to be calm when going on leash and learning to happily sit when greeting people).

Now, for some things that come to mind that I found lacking in the book. First, I happen to have a toy poodle who is bizarrely un-food motivated, and Dunbar doesn't mention that at all. I did learn from other poodle owners that this breed isn't the most food motivated one. I wish he would cover that situation in the book. So, for instance, Dunbar recommends putting all of the dog's kibble in Kong toys, yet if I put all of Buck's food in his bowl, he *still* wouldn't eat even half of it. So, if the open dish doesn't work, the Kong toy is like locking it away! And, freeze dried liver didn't work for Buck either. Advice: get those beef jerky sticks for dogs. Or try cheese. And strangely: Wheat Thins (even my cat loves them). Small bits of hot dog too. (I use this for the poop reward). Even so, all of these favorite items stuffed into a Kong toy won't work for my dog. Maybe when he gets a little older/bigger and I can try it out again, but for now I'm mystified about turning him into a chew-toy-aholic.

Secondly, I would have appreciated more information on the puppy interaction when you have a really small dog, or a really large dog. I think the problems you encounter as a dog owner do vary when you have a "non-average" sized breed. How do you keep your little dog from being completely frightened of huge dogs (and then later turning into one of those yappy jerks)? How do you keep your rambunctious, lovey Great Dane from bowling over the chihuaha? And, when you do finally take your dog to the dog park, how can you as an owner to a better job of evaluating other dogs as potential problems? Most people don't even bother to socialize their dogs, so how do you evaluate?

Finally, while I initially started asking people to offer a treat to my dog to get him to sit, I quickly learned that most every person will use a different visual method in asking the dog to sit, while only using the word "sit." So, it's really too onerous in my opinion to try to get every person to get the dog to sit, since the lure/reward technique of holding the treat over the head works, but most people don't know the signal! So, my dog dances on its hind legs while people say "sit!" and give it the treat because he's so cute. This pretty much has de-sensitized "sit" as a keyword so I quickly dropped the idea of asking people to make him "sit." What *does* work is asking people to offer the dog a treat, since then they naturally great the dog with a lowered hand, palm up, which is far less threatening to the dog and not a dominance display. I am really not going to burden every human social interaction with an instruction on the sit technique that is required. Later, when the dog learns the word itself, maybe then. I feel that in this respect, Dunbar's advice is a bit impractical.

Overall, I am very glad that I bought this book, and it's been an essential tool in my working with my puppy and understanding the nature of dogs.

5 out of 5 stars Thinking about getting a puppy, get this book.......2007-05-09

I read this book twice before even getting my puppy it has been a godsend. Right now my puppy is napping quietly in his doggy den. It has great information for new dog owners and for people who have had dogs for years. The training methods are a lot different from when I had my last dog. The lure/reward way is much easier on the dog and owner. My puppy was a little undersocialized, and information in this book has really helped me to build his confidence. I highly recommend this book, get it if you are even thinking about getting a puppy. It prepared me for all the work you have to do to be a dog owner.

5 out of 5 stars Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts.......2007-01-10

Should be a required read for any engaged or recently married couple!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2006-12-22

Before getting engaged, my husband and I read this book and completed the workbook exercises. We found it extremely helpful, much more so than the premarital counseling we were required to get from our pastor. We entered marriage feeling extremely well-prepared and after 5 1/2 years of being happily married, I am so glad we went through this program. I have since given the book and workbooks to several friends as an engagement gift. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Good and Practical Advice.......2006-11-07

I was very pleased with 'Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts'. It was an easy read-not highly theological where I found myself getting lost and asking 'what are they talking about' but rather, it has great simple advice on how to understand yourself and your spouse, and how to accept and love your differences. My Fiance and I really enjoyed reading it together and afterward, discussing our own thoughts. Very good read!! Highly reccommend!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for engaged couples.......2006-08-11

I have used this book for years with couples who come to me to get married (I am a pastor). The book begins with several mythical expectations that many have of marriage - which lead to greater disappointment during marriage. It helps the couple understand the nature of true love - as passion, intimacy and commitment. Though the authors do not point it out, the Parrotts' triangular view of love parallels the New Testament description of love as eros (passion), philia (intimacy), and agape (commitment).

Communication and conflict resolution are covered, including a chapter on gender differences. Finally, the authors gently approach spiritual life with a chapter on becoming soul-mates.

Many couples who come to me to be married do not share my Christian world view. This book provides an introduction to some of the most important marriage skills from a Christian point of view, but without assuming knowledge or acceptance of the Bible. The discussion questions at the end of each chapter, help the couple talk about their reading and their relational skills with each other. I also recommend the companion workbooks.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best in this genre........2006-07-16

Husband and wife Doctoral team, Les and Leslie Parrott have established themselves as the gurus of modern marriage counseling. This book, SAVING YOUR MARRIAGE BEFORE IT STARTS: SEVEN QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE (AND AFTER) YOU MARRY is, I believe, their best work.

This is an wonderful work that will benefit all marriages, but I do have a couple of complaints about it. The book does not read exceptionally well all the way through. It's great in most areas, but seems to wane in others. Also, for maximum effectiveness, this book should be used in conjunction with the workbooks, one for him, and one for her. That being the case, the book should have been bound into one volume or sold only as an all-inclusive package. Some readers will be put off to buy this book only to find out they need to go buy two more!

Now that I have that out of the way, let me amend by stating, I believe this is one of the very best and most practical books available for couples, especially from engagement up through the first year of marriage. I don't want to give away too much content, but the book begins with setting the right "expectations" in your marriage. I believe this is the most critical aspect of marriage that is most often a major contributing factor to disillusionment. Other subjects covered are things such as how to have disagreements without devastating results, learning how to communicate with each other, identifying the "love styles" of the couple and much more.

The advice is practical with a strong emphasis on your marriage from a Christian aspect. I highly recommend this book, but do yourself a favor and buy the workbooks with it.

Book Description

At 278 pounds, Susan Maria Leach couldn't fit into a roller coaster seat, couldn't tie a bathrobe around herself, couldn't even ride with her husband on the back of his Harley. Enough was enough. Susan underwent gastric bypass weight loss surgery. Now Susan weighs in at a mere 135 pounds. Her book, Before & After, is the story of her incredible journey from being too big to enjoy her life, to being able to truly enjoy life to its fullest.

Now Susan can fit into that roller coaster seat, completely tie that robe, and ride on the back of her husband's Harley.

More than one hundred thousand people had weight loss surgery in 2003, and as those pounds continue to drop, the number of people opting for the surgery continues to rise.

Part memoir and part cookbook, Before & After includes a foreword by Susan's surgeon, comments from a nutritionist, and a section on frequently asked questions. It is an intimate account of Susan's own transformation, as well as a universal guide for those who have undergone or are considering the procedure.

After her own success, Susan participated in support groups for weight loss surgery patients. There, she discovered that people had as many questions about life after surgery as they had about the operation itself. Before & After answers those questions and many more. An accomplished home cook and longtime culinary enthusiast, Susan quickly became known as the "lady with the recipes."

Determined not to give up good food and a flexible lifestyle, Susan worked hard to develop recipes that meet her nutritional requirements, yet are delicious and satisfying for her, her family, and her guests. The 100 recipes -- which include everything from Roasted Salmon with Mango Salsa and Italian Meatballs to Belgian Chocolate Cheesecake and Lemon Meringue Pie -- make about four servings, but each comes with a measured serving for WLS people along with a calorie/carb/fat/protein count. Susan has recipes for every step of the way, from tastes-like-the-real-thing milk shakes for those first post-op days to an entire Thanksgiving menu.

Before & After is a journal of Susan's own inspirational story, where she shares her ups and downs, her tips and techniques, but mostly it's a book about hope for anyone who has a serious weight problem.

This book was disappointing because it was excerpt of the Authors diary and really not as informative as I thought it would be. I did enjoy checking out the recipes for possible future use. I thought it would be more indepth.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!!.......2007-08-01

This is a very honest and real account of surgery and recovery. Recipes are delicious and most are fairly easy, even for a non-cook!

1 out of 5 stars Not real practical information for those who have had surgery........2007-06-22

Her website is better.

This book is more like a memoir not really having anything to deal with eating well after surgery.

It's mostly about the fun things she could do/did experience after losing weight.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Reading.......2007-06-11

I really liked this book for the diary portions and information. I didn't love the recipes as much, and I love good photos of items in a cookbook, so that was all that was missing. I certainly recommend the book, I have used it as a reference, so that is saying alot.

5 out of 5 stars Supportive, Encouraging and Helpful.......2007-05-16

I bought Susan Maria's book after I had Gastric Bypass Surgery in July 2006. I found the book entertaining and delightful as well as informative. She tells us about her journey openly and honestly. In April of this year I had the priviledge of meeting Susan Maria, her husband and entire staff when I visited the Before and After Store in Pompano Beach Florida. She is a genuine and lovely person who truly cares about the people that she helps, she has a true desire to see others that have had Weight Loss Surgery succeed. I am a regular member of her message board and enjoy the encouragment and information that I receive there. The journey she writes about in her book is HER journey and no 2 people will have the same journey. I think the book is a wonderful tool for those who have had surgery or are contemplating surgery. She has wonderful recipes developed from her love of cooking which are also included in the book. I personally use her book and refer to it often. Her insight into quality vitamins and the need for protein to keep our bodies healthy are invaluable. I also buy the products that she sells because they are tried and true products that are taste tested to only offer the best products available! I am thankful to Susan Maria Leach for her wonderful book, store and website. I think they are all invaluable tools for the Weight Loss Surgery Patient and will help us to be more succesful on our Weighloss journey.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have .......2007-01-11

This book educates women about important exercises during pregnancy and post partem that will give them a new perspective on how their bodies work. In fact, imparting the exercises throughout life from now on would benefit every woman immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the time to read.......2006-04-29

After reading some of the negative reviews, I felt compelled to write my own. In my first pregnancy, I did find the book hard to follow in some places (and yes it could be organized better), and I did not use it. Now in my second preganacy, and in hindsight I greatly regret not taking the time to actually read it and use it. I have searched for other books, and have found some that seem better organized, however, all of the other books seem based on MS Noble's but less complete, and do not really promote exercises which will not increase pelvic floor problems. This book is designed to protect the pelvic floor, and repair it (instead of surgery). So no, do not expect to break a sweat or find and intense work out (of which high body temp is bady for baby's brain anyway). If you are looking for something with a 5 second simple sound byte for instructions, this is not the book for you. Such as in life, some of the really good things require thorough explanantion and a bit of your time. Ms. Noble's book was one of the first like it, is still the base reference for most others, and will truly teach you how to protect your abdomen and pelvic floor safely. Unlike some other books, which have exercises that will actually increase abdominal recti seams. So, if after pregancny you do not want a saggy abdomen, a uterus hanging down, and not to pee when you sneeze- this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Exercises For The Childbearing Year.......2006-02-07

I wish that I had found and read this book before both of my pregnancies, especially since I now have a severe uterine prolapse shortly after my second! (I never even knew this could happen in someone my age- 36!) I will now try to repair some of the damage pregnancy and delivery has wrought on my body by using the exercises in this book, and fully recommend other women do the same to avoid the awful problems I am having!

2 out of 5 stars Probably not for women who are already exercisers.......2002-08-31

Although this book has some really interesting points on abdominal exercises (although the other reviewers are right about the poor organization; and, there are typos and visually the pages are very cluttered), it absolutely does not offer an overall fitness program. It's much more like a physical therapy program focussed on abs and pelvic floor. So, if what you're looking for is supplemental exercises to add, it may be fine for you, but I'm going back to the drawing board to find a more all-purpose pregnancy exercise book. Plus, I think I can handle more than three or four crunches (I think she says you can do "up to five").

Also, be aware that the author has a judgmental streak. I may agree with some of her digs at the medical establishment (I was delighted, for example, to hear her pooh-pooh the idea that lying or exercising on your back will cause supine hypotension), but when she aims her barbs at women with bad posture, for example, it seems counter-productive (I could do without the screaming jagged "NO!"s next to the pictures of incorrect posture).

5 out of 5 stars Essential Exercises for the Childbearing Year.......2001-04-12

I have been reading the 1982 version of this book, not realizing there was a new edition. Happily while reading another book, The Mommy Guide, I read an interview with the author of Essential Exercises, Elizabeth Noble, and found out there was a more recent edition. Anyway, in the interview Ms. Noble refers to the importance of doing abdominal isometric exercises within 24-hours of giving birth. She states that the abdominal muscles are still flexible at this point and it's possible to shorten them in order to begin toning your stretched out midsection. Have any of the readers of this book tried this? Does it work? I would love to contact the author regarding this exercise, but the e-mail address listed on this page comes back undeliverable. If you're reading this Elizabeth, could you e-mail me at srdd@hotmail.com? Overall, the 1982 edition is amazingly helpful. It's great to get the advice of a physcial therapist regarding proper movement during pregnancy. I look forward to reading the current edition.

Desire of the Everlasting Hills is another present from the pen of Thomas Cahill, author of How the Irish Saved Civilization and The Gifts of the Jews. In this third volume of the bestselling Hinges of History series, he knits together history, politics, sociology, and faith with contemporary insights that yield remarkable results.

After painting with broad brush strokes an entertaining picture of the Greek, Jewish, and Roman world, Cahill focuses on Jesus. With illuminating deductions and clever speculation, Jesus is seen though the eyes of his biographers in their Gospel accounts. Each of these authors' lives is reconstructed in such a way that the richness of their writing and their subject matter is wonderfully enhanced.

The section on Paul, detailing how his life and letters shaped the early church, should be required reading for every student of the Bible. From his beginnings in the cosmopolitan city known as Tarsus through his calling, like the patriarchs and prophets before him, he becomes "the perfect vehicle for this moment in the development of the Jesus Movement." His mix of Greek reasoning with rabbinical training casts the stories of the early church into a thoughtful theology. He is seen here as the earliest egalitarian who not only impacted the early church but all of western civilization.

Cahill challenges many traditional religious ideas while also taking on some of the more radical contemporary interpreters of biblical literature. As with the other volumes in this series, the marginal notes are filled with a wealth of interesting information. Combining his own fresh translation of many New Testament highlights with respect and humor, Thomas Cahill's book is for the believer and nonbeliever alike. --Tracy Danz

Book Description

From the bestselling author of How the Irish Saved Civilization and The Gifts of the Jews, his most compelling historical narrative yet.

How did an obscure rabbi from a backwater of the Roman Empire come to be the central figure in Western Civilization? Did his influence in fact change the world? These are the questions Thomas Cahill addresses in his subtle and engaging investigation into the life and times of Jesus.

Cahill shows us Jesus from his birth to his execution through the eyes of those who knew him and in the context of his time—a time when the Jews were struggling to maintain their beliefs under overlords who imposed their worldview on their subjects. Here is Jesus the loving friend, itinerate preacher, and quiet revolutionary, whose words and actions inspired his followers to journey throughout the Roman world and speak the truth he instilled—in the face of the greatest defeat: Jesus' crucifixion as a common criminal. Daring, provocative, and stunningly original, Cahill's interpretation will both delight and surprise.

4 out of 5 stars Didn't read it.......2007-05-13

Though I might read this but as it turned out, I didn't...it is still around here somewhere....

4 out of 5 stars beautiful portrait of my savior... .......2007-04-19

I loved this book because it challenged the picture I had of Jesus in my head but didn't challenge my beliefs of Jesus. It added a deepening and understanding of the divinity of Jesus. I love Cahill's books and not just because I'm Irish and we saved western civilization.

2 out of 5 stars Desire of the Everlasting Hills: The World Before and After Jesus .......2007-03-09

This book is not up to the quality of How the Irish Saved Civilization. Too much of his writing is merely quoting sources. Actually it is rather boring.

5 out of 5 stars Magical.......2007-01-05

I have read all of Mr. Cahill's books and consider this to be the finest. He answers and ambitious question -- "Did Jesus Matter?" By comparing the expectations of the civilized world before and after Jesus in a wonderfully entertaining fashion, he provides fresh insights and makes a compelling case. Whether you are a Christian or not, you can appreciate this captivating perspective and Mr. Cahill's lively writing.

3 out of 5 stars The Gospel according to Cahill.......2006-12-08

Thomas Cahill's "Desire of the Everlasting Hills" is an engaging but somewhat disappointing work. In short, Cahill's discussion of the "world before" Jesus is more carefully considered than that of the "world after," with the author's treatment of the person of Jesus himself being an equivocation. Was Jesus merely human or was he both human and divine? I wouldn't have minded a clear argument for either position, but Cahill's narrative seems to hedge between the two. "Desire" sees Jesus as a radical visionary, to be sure, but does not have the courage to either affirm or deny the element of transcendence in the Gospel accounts. Ultimately, though hints of possible transcendence abound, the person of Jesus is reduced to what nearly everyone can affirm (that Jesus was a "great moral teacher"), and when I finished the middle chapters of the book I found myself asking "is that all?" It is true that during Cahill's later discussion of the "world after" Jesus, Paul is described as someone who unquestionably viewed Jesus as divine, but here Cahill fails to make a definitive connection between Paul's theology and the historical figure of Jesus. And the further the book proceeds into the "world after," the more selective Cahill's scholarly sources become, a selection seeming to support a mostly negative bias regarding the institutional Church. This is especially apparent in his discussion of John's Gospel, which is impugned as being anti-Semitic, and is posited to be the primary inspiration for later anti-Semitism in the history of Christianity.

Still, there is much to admire in this work. As I have said, I found the book to be engaging. Even when I disagreed or became frustrated with him, I never doubted the author's sincerity; Cahill seems to have a genuine desire to understand the impact Jesus has had on history. The discussion of the "world before" Jesus was excellent; I especially appreciated the way the description of Alexander the Great set the reader up for the inevitable contrast with the description of Jesus later in the book. And though I did not agree with many of the author's conclusions concerning the synoptic Gospels or the Pauline epistles, I was surprised to find such a thought-provoking and positive treatment of these topics. I recommend this book to those who are familiar with the New Testament from scholarly and/or devotional reading, and who are at least somewhat familiar with the history of Christianity; others might find it to be confusing or even misleading.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful.......2007-08-28

I read this book four years ago, before my divorce. I credit the book with giving me a fairly level head throughout the entire separation/divorce process. The focus on how you and your ex will be joined at the hip for the rest of your lives for birthdays, graduations, weddings, etc. coupled with the authors' pragmatic advice made me realize what a long haul it was - I had to just get over all the emotional baggage and look forward to a life as a different kind of family, but a family nonetheless.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is having trouble in his/her marriage. My ex-husband was also willing to read it, which helped a lot. I really think this book helped me and my ex-husband figure out how to co-parent in a friendly, non-threatening way.

5 out of 5 stars The Divorce Facts of Life for Parents.......2006-09-30

Judith S. Wallerstein and Sandra Blakeslee choose to cover a much wider timeline within the life of the divorcing family than most divorce books have traditionally done. And, unlike other divorce books that serve up a lot of reassuring words, but not a lot of day-to-day strategies for dealing with the fallout of marital breakdown when you're doing frontline duty in the parenting trenches, What About the Kids? Raising Your Children Before, During and After Divorce spells out the very messages that kids need to hear at each stage of the marital breakdown and at each point in their own development in order to feel safe and secure.

Wallerstein and Blakeslee have adopted the same warm and highly personal style that so engaged the readers of their previous books (most notably The Good Marriage: How and Why Love Lasts). They have a real knack for zeroing in on the emotions that a parent is likely to be experiencing at any given point on the sometimes rocky path between marriage and divorce. In fact, they use the journey motif in the introduction of the book when they talk about how marital breakdown intensifies the challenges of parenting: "Parenting is always a hazardous undertaking. Much of the time it's like climbing a mountain trail that disappears and reappears, making you wonder if you're still headed for the top or if you're stranded on a cliff. But parenting in a divorced or remarried family is harder still -- it's like climbing that same trail in a blizzard, blinded by emotions and events out of your control. You have no clear path, no idea of where you're going. You may not even realize that you're lost."

If it's starting to sound like getting a divorce is life-long work, you've got that right, insists Wallerstein: "Since you have children, you're yoked until they're grown. Even then, you have to deal with graduations, weddings, baptisms, bar mitzvahs, and all the other rituals of family life....Some parts of marriage really do endure until death do you part."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!.......2006-07-07

This book is a must read if you are going through a divorce. I only wish I had found it sooner in the process. Ms. Wallerstein uses her years of experience and training to guide parents through common reactions of children by their age. Every therapist working with children of divorce should read this and recommend this to the parents for the sake of the kids.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful of Wallerstein's work.......2004-02-27

Judith Wallerstein has been amicus curiae (a friend of the court) in many custody related cases but she is certainly no friend of children who would like to have both parents in their lives.

Her research, which was presented in a pivotal custody case in California (In re: Marriage of Burgess), was very influential in the court's decision. That decision has been widely criticized and has led to countless children in the state growing up without one of their parents, usually the father. In recent amicus curiae briefs filed by Wallerstein she relies heavily on anecdotal accounts of cases in which she played no part and disregards substantial amounts of literature that highlight the harmful impact of the loss of important relationships to a child and shows that children do much better with two loving, competant parents. She has even contridicted herself on positions that she originally took in the Burgess case.

Her research has been widely criticized in recent years and this book will likely be no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Informative & helpful guide for divorcing families.......2003-05-28

As an adult whose parents divorced when I was about five years old, I can only imagine what my mother and father went through during that time. As a young child, I was too concerned with my own life and routines to even wonder how the divorce affected them. I do know that I had a very happy childhood, and I don't remember my routines being too disrupted.

My parents were among the millions of men and women who have decided on divorce. The process of divorce can be complicated as it is. But if there are children in the family, divorce can be a very traumatic experience for all involved. If divorce is not easy for the adults, why would it be any easier for the children?

In the book, "What About the Kids? Raising Your Children Before, During, and After Divorce," by Judith S. Wallerstein and Sandra Blakeslee, divorce is looked at as being new beginning, since everyone's lives will be different from that point on. How can parents protect themselves from being any less of the parent they were before the divorce? How do parents explain their divorce to their children, and how can they protect their children during each stage of their new lives? This book contains these answers and much more. Parents who are going through or have already gone through a divorce will learn the best way to take care of themselves, their children, and how to handle many of life's situations as a divorced parent.

MyParenTime highly recommends this book -- it is easy-to-read and is written in a non-discriminating tone. It provides helpful information to parents who are going through a difficult time in their lives. It also focuses on the children at different stages in their lives -- because parents are not the only ones whose lives will be changed forever.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Simple, but true.......2007-08-13

I can boil this book down to one thing: Do informational interviews with real attorneys in order to see if the law is right for you. The book has some lengthy and, in my opinion, not too useful self-assessment exercises. And just when they get you thinking that they are going to impart wisdom about what it is that real lawyers DO, they tell you to go out and schedule informational interviews with real lawyers. This is a great idea, but you don't need to read the book to get it. If you really can't think of enough questions for an informational interview, then pay the $10 to buy this book and use the appendix. Otherwise, don't waste your time.

1 out of 5 stars Not the greatest buy.......2007-07-21

About the greatest thing about this book is cover which is even not that great. For someone who proclaims to have gone through law school as the author claims, the book is very poor in written form. The book also does a LOT of repeating and dressing up "facts" in a way that is often used by marketers to sell their product. Although there may be one or two good points in the book, most of it is common sense. Basically, it is an expensive way of telling you to ask yourself the questions as to whether or not you know what lawyers do and whether or not you have researched the field of law enough to have the confidence to head to law school. Like I said before, she (the author) has some valid points but everything in the book can be found online for free and is basic common sense. I would'nt suggest forking out the cash for this reading.

1 out of 5 stars Bad editing and geared to college juniors.......2007-05-03

The major problem I found in this book is the lack of editing. There are serious grammatical errors, misspellings, missing punctuation and sentences with no logical end.
If you are thinking about attending law or graduate school, this book should be one of the first books to read in the junior year. The career strategies are extremely helpful to anyone making the drastic choices near the end of undergraduate studies. I felt like most of the information is useful to any student who are considering career counseling, since it will get you thinking about what life will be like after college.
Unfortunately, I have twenty years experience after college in the work force, learning and utilizing most of the strategies in this book. If you have worked in any career after college, then I wouldn't recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Is there anything positive in this book..........2007-04-04

aside from the success stories of everyone who has left the legal profession? I appreciate some of the self-assesment tools, but the remainder of the book is filled with anecdotes about miserable law students and lawyers who were much happier when they made a school or career change. The subtitle should be changed to "NO! We don't think you or anyone should be a lawyer!" Ridiculous.

5 out of 5 stars Pondering Law School..........2007-02-13

Two years ago I attended law school for a short period before quitting, and now I am interested in going back, but I wanted to evaluate my reasons for going back to make sure I was going back for the right reasons. This book was very helpful in doing just that. Also, as many reviewers have said, I wish I would have read this book before attempting law school the first time around because I think I could have avoided the pit falls that originally led me to quit. Reading this book was a big help and I would suggest it to anyone thinking about law school.

Book Description

Are you one of the 58 million morbidly obese people in America today? Chances are, you've been on a diet after diet and failed miserably. But you should lay the blame where it belongs. You didn't fail the diet, nor did the diet fail you. Instead, look a little deeper and start to recognize that even if you could shed some excess pounds, the truth of the matter is that less than 1% of you will keep it off according to recent studies published by the National Institute of Health.

The theory that obesity is not your fault is not exactly new. Many morbidly obese people are not eating two, three or four times the amount of food for their bodies to grow and store "that much" excess fat. Genetic research is showing that the cause for obesity is not gluttony. Many morbidly obese people lead very active lives despite the physical limitations and challenges brought about by carrying an extra hundred pounds or more. Everything from Leptin to Dopamine receptors are being offered as real scientific evidence to show that obesity is not your fault. Many people have blamed themselves for so long that the thought that obesity may not be your fault is often dismissed. While you may not "eat right" or "exercise regularly", there are millions of normal size people who are not suffering with morbid obesity and they eat worse and their exercise habits are no better than that of many morbidly obese people. Everybody knows somebody who seems to “eat and not gain”.

Despite the closely held societal view that obesity is a matter of lack of self-control or lack of willpower, many people are beating themselves up for what is not their fault at all. In the newly published book on Weight Loss Surgery: Understanding & Overcoming Morbid Obesity, author and registered nurse Michelle Boasten offers a theory of obesity that helps the morbidly obese reader to understand and overcome morbid obesity through weight loss surgery.

Boasten explains that obesity may be the result of a broken down communication system in the body. Boasten also explains the painful reality of life in a morbidly obese body and walks the reader through developing their own philosophy of obesity and how to get out of the "prison" of a morbidly obese body.

At present, over 99% of all weight loss surgery patients are able to lose large amounts of excess weight and keep it off. Weight loss surgery isn't just the last hope; it is the only method of weight control that is documented to show a landslide victory when trying to overcome morbid obesity. Can anyone ignore such positive results?

Boasten explains the difference between the old "stomach stapling" and the weight loss surgery of today, which is gastric bypass surgery. "Many people are confused and don't understand how and why weight loss surgery works" says Boasten. "It's not just a matter of food intake, it's bypassing the part of the small intestine known as the duodenum that allows the person to keep the weight off." Reducing food alone will not result in a sustained weight loss for the genetically predisposed morbidly obese person.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-11

This book was recommended to me from a friend who had the surgery. Its a good book and easy to read and follow. YOu'll learn a lot just from reading this and be well informed.

5 out of 5 stars WLS- Understanding..........2005-07-19

I ordered this book prior to having my MGB (mini gastric bypass) surgery. It is an excellent book, put in terms that the layman can understand. The author has first hand knowledge about the surgery first because she had the procedure and 2nd because she is a Registered Nurse who has the medical background. She explains in simple terms the differences between weight loss surgeries. She lays the information out there for you to make informed and educated decisions. She weighs out the pros and cons of all the surgeries. The chapter on insurance is especially helpful for those who are fighting with their insurance company to get reimbursement. I used a lot of her techniques that she suggested and received 80% reimbursement on my claim. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is contemplating weight loss surgery. I keep this book in my library and refer to it from time to time and have let others borrow it too. (although I am always afraid they won't bring it back) I have lost 135 pounds and have about 25 pounds to go to my goal weight. I give the author, Michelle Boaston a lot of credit for my success. She has been a real inspiration to me!

3 out of 5 stars Tells some but not enough.......2003-12-29

I read this book and I too found it too simplistic. My 20 year old daughter, my 45 year old sister, my niece and her male friend have all had this surgery in the past year. All I can say is, I predict that there will soon be a backlash about this eerily popular surgery. One of my niece's friends had the surgery six months ago and has had constant health problems, several rehospitalizations, and ongoing problems because of the surgery. She is only 24 and is in a wheelchair because she is too weak to walk. My niece's male friend had to be hospitalized because he developed a bleeding ulcer in the pouch. He is only 25 years old. This surgery is NOT the ultimate and best solution for everyone. My daughter has daily stomach pain and vomits almost every day for various reasons, despite how careful she is about what and how much she eats. My sister and niece look almost gaunt and have not found the personal happiness they thought they would find. My daughter has lost 120 pounds and needs a support group to get through all the emotional changes the surgery causes. I read somewhere that this surgery gives you an increased chance of cancer of the esophagus. Anyone who is considering this surgery has to KNOW that nothing in life is free and in some cases you may just be trading one set of problems for another. My daughter seems gaunt, bony, and has to constantly eat protein and take vitamins to keep her body going. She should be at the peak of her health but she doesn't look like it to me. Also she has to take Depo Provera shots as you CANNOT get pregnant within the first two years of this surgery or you and the baby could die. Just be aware that this surgery changes your life permentanly and you may not find that you necessarily like all the changes, even if you think you might. What a culture we live in that fat people will resort to this just to reach this nirvana of thin so that society will be kinder to them. How very sad.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.......2003-11-06

A quick glance at the cover and you know you are not dealing with a medical journal so I'm not sure why other reviewers are holding the book to that standard. This book is particularly helpful if you are already pretty sure you want to go through with a WLS procedure. Go elsewhere if you want diagrams and the latest scientific data. But for an honest how-to for dealing with your insurance company (one of your biggest challenges as a WLS patient), this was superb. My insurance has paid, 100%. Thanks, Michelle! The checklists throughout the book and PDF available on her Web site have been so helpful (e.g. what to bring to the hospital, things to take care of before the surgery). Ms. Boasten writes compassionately and sincerely.

5 out of 5 stars Worked for me.......2003-07-15

This book helped me prepare for my WLS in June 2002. When I went in for my surgery I weighed 457 lbs. Today I went for my one year follow-up. I weighed 311 lbs. I plan to lose down to 200 to 225 by next year. Boasten's book was a real encouragement and source of information as I contemplated my operation. The book explains the options available as well as the social and emotional issues surrounding the surgery. If you are morbidly obese, you should read this book for a better idea of your options. I'm glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Material.......2007-09-01

This book explains the basics (and some more advanced concepts) of good graphic design without overwhelming the reader with technical terms nor "dumbing down" the vocabulary for the novice. There are plenty of colourful examples and the book follows its own advice! This book lacks, however, the specific steps to accomplish the different design goals, but this is probably due the many publishing packages available. It assumes the reader will figure that out for himself (or herself.) The book is a compact 200 page document that is filled with useful information from cover to cover and is a great addition to any designer's reference library.

5 out of 5 stars Another successful design book from Before & After.......2007-06-13

Yet another great book from the folks at Before & After. I have the Before & After Page Design book and subscribe to the PDF magazine. Even with all that, I still liked the addition of this book. It covers the usual business situations like newsletters, stationery, logos, forms and charts. The ideas illustrated and dissected here were found to be light bulb creating. I was able to apply a few of the tips right away to some projects I was working on at the time.

Some of the nuggets I enjoyed most were the comparison and discussion of what typefaces are best for what text that can be applied to all sorts of type, logo creation and thought process and the charts. The charts were not just your average pie charts, but great design elements.

Again, I'm impressed by another Before & After project. The illustrations and explanations help new and intermediate designers improve the craft. I'm sure seasoned professionals can pick up a few tips too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-09

This is a concise, easy to read book that seems to cover a large variety of publications and projects. I can open it up to any page and get new ideas and insights on projects I'm working on.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for effective work.......2005-11-21

I am a former graphic worker and I now teach this matter to students who have no ideas of the state of the art.
The book is professionnal and easy to use, and all examples are so helpfull to any people who need advices in business graphics.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource for ANY business.......2005-11-09

Before & After is one of my favorite design magazines. The project examples, step-by-step guidelines and practical articles have always been excellent resources for designers of all education and experiences levels. With Graphics for Business, author, designer and teacher John McWade teaches the reader how to make their business look great. The book is not logo or corporate identity specific. In addition to logo design, McWade covers the creation of newsletters, stationery, sales pieces and forms, and charts, reports, calendars and maps. Still, the logo and identity section of the book (44 pages of the volume) explains logos very well and provides great examples of how to design lettermarks, wordmarks, monograms, ligatures and other forms of identities. Playing with type, words, shapes and illustrative elements are all presented in fun and well-illustrated manner. The book will be a great addition to the design library of anyone interested in producing a strong image for their business, or that of a client. - Jeff Fisher, writer of bLog-oMotives and the "Logo Notions" column at CreativeLatitude.com
