Excellent Guide.......2007-02-03
This is a very comprehensive manual for the management of volunteer based groups. I used this book extensively for two years as president of a 100% volunteer based non-profit org. Frankly, it was indispensable as both a guide and reference in countless situations, from rewriting the bylaws and policies, to managing/inspiring/leading a board of 12 directors and over 60 volunteers/500+ members. This group went from a dwindling, unorganized, under-funded lot to a vibrant, well organized, and well funded group during my time of service. I owed a lot of that success to this book.

I felt this book was reasonably priced and offered a wide array of helpful fundraising advice -- especially for the small to mid-sized nonprofit. It covers a lot of the basics in a writing style that is pleasant to read.
Great book!.......2002-10-19
I'm not a professional fundraiser, but I plan to become involved in nonprofits, and this book was great! I know of some nonprofits that get all of their money from corporate donations and then complain about not having enough money. This isn't the way to do it, according to Ms. Flanagan. In order to be a successful fundraiser, you need to ask, ask, ask, and you need to provide many different ways for different people to give. Flanagan goes into many aspects of the game, including how to send follow up letters, when to ask, how often to ask, and different ways of making it easy to get big gifts. I especially liked the way she talks about the psychology of rich people and poor people, and how both tend to give in different ways. She tells us never to make decisions for givers--just ask, present them with the different options, and let them decide. Great advice.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get involved with charity. The marginal profit from the first day will probably cover the cost of this book many times over.

I recently had the opportunity to attend one of Joan's courses - and she is just as wonderful and helpful in person. She presents the daunting tasks of fundraising in simple language, common sense and humor.

I highly recomment Gala! not only for its content, but also because it gives a great framwork on how to put together an event. Personally, it helped me preparing an 100 people event and I truly can say it great because it showed me how to pull all the elements together.
What's different from other books, it's that Patti Coons explains how important are details while preparing your event.

not worth the money.......2003-01-30
I suppose if you had never planned any kind of event, this book might be helpful. Once you've planned even a kids' birthday party, this book becomes obsolete. The lists are ridiculous; the same information and "hints" are reworded throughout the book to appear "new". For example, there's a monthly list of tasks to accomplish in a year-long planning scenario, and then the same tasks are redistributed and reworded for the shorter scenario; it fills up the book, but one would have to be brain-dead not to be able to condense the year-long format into a shorter list. All in all, it was a waste of money and a waste of time.
It's for fundraisers! Not events! Just fundraisers!.......2001-08-03
When I bought this book I thought it was about planning different kinds of events, fundraisers included. Turns out it's all about fundraisers. Which is fine, but I wish they'd said so ON THE COVER so I wouldn't wasted my money. The info is good for fundraisers, but pretty much irrelevant for any other kind of big event.
The cover needs correcting!.......2001-06-26
OH my. Gala just arrived and as usual the first thing I did was to peruse the cover. The front cover is smashing. The back cover, however, is riddled with typos and awkwardly worded sentences. Apparently, Ms Coons' editor wasn't paying attention during this very special event. If I had been inside of a bookstore, where I could have captured the mistakes, BEFORE I headed to the checkout line, I would have never purchased this book. But alas, I haven't even opened the covers yet to see what's inside. If it's good quality I'll let you know.

This book provides comprehensive, practical guidelines on the responsibilities of those who lead, co-ordinate and manage volunteers in small hospices, large specialist palliative care units, and in general hospitals with palliative care teams. Volunteers are key workers, who often perform difficult and always important work. In the United Kingdom alone, there are thousands of volunteers in hospice work, a small proportion doing work with patients, and the vast majority doing equally valuable work such as driving, sitting with relatives, manning charity shops and telephones. As a result, Europe, Australia, the United States and Canada are very interested in the United Kingdom's use of volunteers. Aimed primarily at Volunteer Service Managers in small hospices, large specialist palliative care units, and in general hospitals with palliative care teams, this book covers volunteer selection, training, supervision and support, and legal and ethical considerations. I am exploring Faith-based initiatives for my thesis, so read this book. What a great "how-to" book, for any faith-based organization venturing into the provision of government funded human services. Easy to read, practical information, experienced, knowledgeable authors. Mine came from the library, but I'm buying my own in hopes of using it in the field someday.
