Great Reference.......2007-04-25
I found this book to be an invaluable reference for my research in the area of compensation. It covers all of the main topics in compensation management with articles from the best minds in the field. The trend summary and chapter introductions provide an overview that is interesting and insightful. That kind of analysis is hard to find. The information is surprisingly up to date, since change is slow in this field.
The book is essential for compensation professionals.
The Compensation Handbook.......2006-02-26
Received with thanks the Compensation Handbook in a very good condition. It is exactly the product I was looking for. I believe that it would be a very important reference to my business.
The Compensation Handbook.......2000-06-27
As a compensation consultant, I sought a comprehensive guide for all aspects of the field. The 4th edition of The Compensation Handbook provides simple and direct answers for every compensation problem. It is a virtual "who's who" of compensation professionals providing well-constructed, concise information on their area of expertise. No matter what information I seek -- from base compensation, variable compensation, executive compensation, performance and compensation, compensation and corporate culture, or international compensation -- I can find pertinent, practical guidance in this one book. Compensation issues that are currently challenging every company - regardless of size, age, or industry -- are especially well developed in The Compensation Handbook. The section on Corporate Culture containing chapters on "Culture and Compensation" and "Connecting Compensation, Behaviors, Culture, and Strategy to Win" by William M. Mercer consultants, "Rewarding Scarce Talent" by Patricia Zingheim, "Gaining a Competitive Edge by Improving the Return on Human Capital" by Peter LeBlanc, and "The Role of Work-Life Benefits in the Total Pay Strategy" covers issues that every compensation practitioner or human resources professional will grapple with in the forseeable future. Even the effect of technology and computers on compensation administration are handled in The Compensation Handbook. Information on global compensation strategies is relevant not only to practitioners but to anyone seeking employment on foreign soil or working for a foreign company. The Compensation Handbook is a winner.

Required for CFP course; not sure why.......2007-07-04
This book is difficult to use for studying for the CFP exam, because it is essentially unindexed. The topics are not very thorough, and so I found it hard to answer questions in my homework even after carefully perusing the relevant chapters. I think what is missing is enough analysis to help you APPLY the rules.
I am not sure that it would be much more useful for an employee benefits manager.
Text Book For Retirement Planning.......2006-11-10
I needed this book for a Retirement Planning class in preparation for a CFP certificate. The book was a better value than from other sources, and I received it in time for my first class. This is my third class in Financial Planning and the text seems to be aimed at the practitioner in the field; so, it is somewhat difficult. However, it is very complete.
Useful textbook.......2006-07-30
I am enrolled in the Certified Financial Planner designation program. Tools and Techniques of Employee Benefit and Retirement Planning is the textbook for the Retirement Planning module. I found this to be the most useful and practical textbook in the course. It is a book that will remain on my shelf for future reference long after I finish the designation program. The information in the textbook in written in a practical manner. It is easy to understand, well-organized and to the point.

If you have an ERISA problem and don't know where to start.........2002-11-02
Ok. I already feel odd writing a review of this book. The anticipated audience is incredibly narrow and if you found this review, you probably know what you are looking for. However, I think this is one of the greatest books. As a law student who is planning on specializing in ERISA, this book has been an invaluable resource to me. It is the first place I turn when I have an ERISA question to research. It won't provide all the answers but puts a very complex statute into perspective. It would also benefit the non-lawyer who might be involved in benefits.
Book Description
Joseph Martocchio's Employee Benefits: A Primer for Human Resource Professionals was written to promote a fuller understanding of employee benefits programs among students enrolled in college-level compensation and benefits course. It is relevant to students who plan to be general managers who deal with a variety of human resource issues in their day-to-day jobs as well as to those who expect to be human resource practitioners. Future practitioners will use this book as an introductory reference guide. Future employees/managers will gain a more complete understanding of how and why companies provide benefits as they do. The real-world focus of Martocchio’s text is evident on every page, as he seeks to balance current academic thought with brief examples of contemporary benefits practices in business.

Excellent resource for benefit professionals-6th Edition.......2001-10-16
I've recently re-entered the employee benefits field after a number of years away and felt I needed a reference guide to help me identify new laws and regulations as well as coverage changes. This book is a fabulous resource. It covers benefits A to Z. Each topic I have come across in my day-to-day work is discussed in this book. This book is perfect for people in their first benefits position and well as the veteran benefits professional. When the 7th Edition comes out, I'll definitely buy it.
Employee Benefits-5th Edition.......2000-06-15
This book is an excellent resource for both the seasoned HR/Benefits manager or new-comer to the field of employee benefits. It is a comprehensive yet readable reference guide which covers everything from basic employee benefits, to general benefits planning and administration, to retirement planning and programs.
Although the book is structured like a text book (it has chapter objectives listed, along with study questions) it is very easy to read and understand. The authors provide many tables and charts which illustrate the more complex subject areas.
As an HR Manager, I highly recommend this book as a reference tool for all companies that wish to maximize their employee benefit programs. The wealth of information and practical material contained in this book is invaluable to any sized organization.
Book Description
When and why have employers supported the development of institutions of social insurance that provide benefits to workers for various employment-related risks? What factors explain the variation in the social policy preferences of employers? This book provides a systematic evaluation of the role played by business in the development of the modern welfare state. Isabela Mares studies these critical questions and demonstrates that major social policies were adopted by cross-class alliances comprising labor-based organizations and key sectors of the business community.
