Case studies galore.......2005-08-02
This huge text is divided about half and half between the strategic management teaching material and the case studies that allow analysis and application of the material.
The extensive and detailed case studies contain a wealth of material I felt could be quite useful outside the class. For example, in researching the case study on Eli Lilly I felt that I had learned a great deal which would give me an extreme advantage over other applicants for a position with that company, a local employer in my field.
Being knowledgeable regarding a company's industry, competitors, the relevant macroeconomic forces affecting them, and specific issues facing them, etc gives an interviewee a distinct edge.
The studies themselves, while raising questions, also contain a LOT of information in and of themselves that is valuable.
I felt that the teaching part of the material was well-written and detailed. For the interested reader, it could easily serve as a self-teaching aid. For the student who has the benefit of a teacher lecturing along with the book, even the compulsory student will learn valuable concepts.
All the tools necessary to benefit from the opportunities represented by the case studies are provided in the text.

Complete and comprehensible.......2001-03-24
This strategic management book is definitely a good introduction into strategic management. I am a management student myself and read it as an introduction. I have compared it to some of the other intoductory books that other schools use, and in my opinion, it is much more direct than the others I have seen. It does not beat around the bush. And it is more detailed than the others. For example, the chapter on competitive, unlike many of the other books, really tries to give as concrete a picture as possible about what this 'vague' concept actually entails. In short, it really increased my insight into the area of strategic management a great deal!
"Approach" is the right word.......2000-05-01
I used this book in my Business Strategy class this semester. I think that this book only begins to approach the material it covers. I am sure that the authors could have gone into far more detail when writing the book, but I don't think that was the purpose of the book. I think that it is intended to be an introduction to strategic management, and it does a great job of doing that. It provides an easy to read format and attractive tables and diagrams. The strategy in action, opening, and closing cases provide a helpful real-world application of the material. I think that this is a great way to provide students with an overview of the material. I learned alot from the book and the class it was used for.
Comprehensive introduction to strategic management.......2000-04-24
An excellent introduction to strategic management. Very readable and flows exceptionally well. Diagrams a bit to basic, but easy on the reader. Clear and concise (no MBA jargon). A very exciting book. Case studies are American Bias, but readable by us Brit's. The first half of the book is excellent, but it loses direction towards the end. Includes, the strategic management process, stakeholders, the nature of competitive advantage, external analysis, internal analysis , business corporate and functional level strategies, building competitive advantage, implementing strategic change etc. Case studies are excellent and bring the book to life, they include Starbucks, Coral divers resort, Microsoft, KFC and many others.
If you have left your strategic management essay to the last miniute buy this book and work through it with company reports to write your esssay in under a Week - I did and recieved 85% (highest mark out of 40 students).
Good luck with the essays.
An interesting book arranged logically........2000-04-07
This book has been a helpful resource in knowing more about business and strategy. The illustrations helped to make the material clearer. The outline of the book made study somewhat easier. I feel that I am better prepared for my future career after reading and studying this book.
A book of Reviews.......2000-04-06
I used this book as a text book for the last class I took at college. This was the highest level class and the book should have been a little more challenging. The book was great at reviewing everything that I had done in my entire college studies. But the book lacked in the area of taking the knowledge and applying it to everyday life. I would use this book again but I would try and find a way to apply more of it the the business world.

Good insights in Strategic Management.......2005-09-19
Hill and Jones have written an excellent book on strategic management. The key element, the importance of exploiting Distinctive Competencies based on Efficiency ,Quality, Innovation, and Customer Satisfaction in order to achieve Competetive Advantage, is demonstrated througout his book in his concise and to the point cases, which are all recent experiences of well known players. Its final case study is a practical and powerful way to ensure that his concepts are understood
the book is pretty new .......2005-07-11
the book is pretty new, the content is a little bit hard to understand. but the cases is helpful
Time well wasted.......2004-12-15
This book was written to take up the time of the everyday student. Because of poor grammar and lack of logical ways of wording sentences, it takes twice the time to understand what the author is trying to say. The cases, however, were helpful in understanding the material presented in the chapters.
Systematic Approach.......2001-04-16
The book covers different subjects in Strategic Management with careful attention and vivid descriptions. The clarity in understanding and implementaion theroff for each chapter are well put forwrad with adequate case studies.Step by step understanding of the subject has been emphasized which makes it very useful for students.Chapters on Strategy Implementaion for differnt stages of Industry Life cycle have been emphasized which helps in understanding different options that are availble for the enterprise. This book will be very handy for Management Students with ready reference to differnt aspects of decision making process in Strategic Management.
Business Strategy.......2000-04-05
I think that this book as a whole is a good book, except for the fact that the graphics were done only in orange. At a business stand point I thought it gave a good representation of the material. I thought that the material covered was covered well. Although there was times when I didn't understand what the authors were trying to say because the layout was difficult to understand. Another critizium that I have is that there was no pictures. I now that this is an upper level material but some people also learn by visualization like me and to see a representation of the material would be helpful.
Book Description
The results are in. The evidence has been analyzed. Research shows that the lack of enterprise-wide training is the biggest reason for ERP implementation failures. It is the single most important precursor to achieving success. Integrated Learning for ERP Success is the first resource to offer a specifically defined, comprehensive method for planning, delivering, and evaluating ERP training efforts. It even includes formulas for determining training return on investment. The Learning Requirements Planning (LRP) process presented involves a six-step enterprise-level instructional design model that when implemented correctly assures success. If you would rather have a root canal than oversee an ERP implementation, you are not alone. But like avoiding a root canal, avoiding ERP implementation only causes more pain. This book eases the implementation pain. It shows you how a formal plan for learning will increase the productivity of the ERP implementation team, shorten overall implementation time, and substantially decrease implementation costs. It also provides a discussion on how an ERP implementation can be used as a catalyst for lifelong organizational learning. Implementing an ERP system can cost three to ten times the actual software purchase price. You can't afford to waste money or time in the areas of ERP education. Integrated Learning for ERP Success shows you how to create learning-focused ERP implementations that provide substantial savings and the competitive advantage.

Book Description
The authors set out to take mathematical modeling a couple of steps further by emphasizing the decision making process and the communication of results. They approach each topic via a narrative of a business situation and illustrate the model building process, taking great care to emphasize the model's assumptions and limitations. Each chapter is then organized around a clearly defined set of pedagogical features designed to guide the student through the management science process.

Good computer modeling book.......2007-07-12
Used this book as part of a MBA computer class. The website makes it easy to work on different computers since Excel files can be downloaded from website or taken from the CD included with the book.
Exercises were good and followed most of the material in the book. Almost all the material applied to "real world" situations.
Applied Management Science: A Computer-Integrated Approach f.......2003-04-01
This is a nobel effort. to try to do a very hard thing. The author however is very hard to follow and at times the explanations drifts into incoherance. Also, I think the author may be too brilliant to write for the average student. He might be better served by having a grad student or military trained person break down the book into coherant steps. This book has some gems of useful info, trapped in some bad explainations. The next version of this may be a truly great textbook. My advice to the author is to simplify and go step by step. Delete text and runon paragraphs where possible. If you take a class based on this book, insist on a lab and a helpful grad student.
nice book.......2000-11-27
It is very nice text book. That what i can say.
Bad Text By Department Chair.......2000-06-13
I was a student at Cal State Fullerton, where these professors teach. This is the worst textbook I have ever read. The text is poorly written. The book doesn't read well and has many typos. I would have expected more from the Management Science Department Chair.

Book Description
Based on a profoundly important six-year study by the Center for the Quality of Management (CQM), "Integrated Management Systems" shows how successful organizations accomplish something unbelievably powerful: Creating their own particular ways of executing the scientific method. The authors worked with the cooperation of some of America's largest companies - Teradyne, Hewlett-Packard, Eastman Chemical, Ritz-Carlton -- and of non-profit organizations including top hospitals and the U.S. Navy. They were surprised to find how radically successful systems differed from one organization to the next.
Yet the core of each was universal: Each organization had designed a system that gathered data about the organization's particular problems, developed theories, tested the theories, and finally documented and shared the results throughout the organization. Each successful organization's methods were unique much as the methods of each successful discipline within the sciences are unique. But less successful organizations had nothing comparable. And the processes through which the leaders in these organizations had gotten them on the right path had a great deal in common.

Don't know what to do without the hero-leader - read this.......1999-12-01
If you read this book in conjunction with Kent Bowen's Harvard Business Review article 'Decoding the DNA of the Toyota Production System (Sept. Oct. 1999) you will get more out of both. The language and case studies are a little different, but the purpose is the same: to develop a system to utilize the scientific method in problem solving at every level of the organization. This book can take you through this complex world and tie together all the fragments we've been studying for years. Whether it's called lean manufacturing or operating systems or TQM, they are all systems that tie tools together in a common purpose. Understand: (1) how to tie it together, (2) how to teach and learn about it, and (3) how to implement it. This isn't a book with just one idea rehashed over and over; the devil is in the details, and this is filled with useful details that have been tested and proven effective. Before you set about trying to change or design your organization, read this book first. The only thing that I would have liked to see to make it better is a chapter on Toyota, the most benchmarked Integrated Management System in the world.
