Book Description
Most investors spend too much time trying to outguess the market and not enough time thinking about their long-term financial futures. That’s why today’s retirees (and soon-to-be retirees) need strategies, not stock tips. Nationally recognized Certified Financial Planner®, radio talk-show personality, and author
Raymond J. Lucia shows you little-known concepts that can fatten your savings and boost your standard of living in retirement.
In an easy-to-understand and often humorous style, Lucia details how ideas such as nontraded real estate investment trusts, 72(t) elections, and equity-indexed annuities can give you, the investor, a leg up on the path to retiring in comfort and safety. Lucia brings his 30 years of experience to bear in revealing how and when to tap your retirement plans, ways to use your home as a source of retirement dollars, and how to lower taxes on appreciated company stock. He’ll also explain how investing in low-income housing tax credits can help you tax-wise even as you assist others.
Filled with hands-on, in-depth insights and practical advice, this book will give you all the tools you need to win at the retirement game.

Helpful book !.......2007-10-01
This is the follow up to buckets of money. I learned a lot and enjoyed the approach. Some sections will be difficult for new investors to understand.....but stick with it, very good info and it is now one of my new reference books to review and share with others. Thanks Ray
Nondirected approach.......2007-09-10
The information given is a little disjointed and a common theme in integrated throughout without proving it.
ready-set-retire.......2007-09-09
Well written. In-depth analysis of bucket two strategies including annuities and complex trust/insurance alternatives. Recommend reading "Buckets of Money"- author's first book- prior to reading this book.
Good Book, but...........2007-07-09
Ray pretty much has a one size fits all philosophy. He is simply trying to get his name out there to promote his firm, which is not always known for doing what is best. He hosts a Radio show as well. If you are going to trust a radio guy, then make it Moe Ansari of Marketwrap.
Ready Set Retire.......2007-06-27
It was 5 star item for me as I have saved and have
< 10 years to retirement. It is easy to read and understand. It is a practical and conservative plan for a secure finacial retirement. You will want other books to cover other aspects of retirement but for a investment plan it is the best I have read.

"One thing is for certain: Variable annuities have become a part of the investment landscape and show no signs of going away."--The Wall Street Journal. The investing public's love of variable annuities has soared so high that The Wall Street Journal started a weekly column on annuities, "Annuity Watch." The reason for the popularity is simple. Variable annuities give investors the opportunity to receive money every year of their life, no matter how long they live. Guaranteed Income for Life explains the benefits of variable annuities. this informative book: Shows specific ways that variable annuities can help investors achieve lifelong financial security; Proves how variable annuities are in many ways superior to more commonly understood mutual funds; Explains the different types of annuities, with tips on how investors can pick the best product for their unique situations.

An excellent guide to investing and how the annuity fits in........1998-11-30
With all the controversies of variable annuities today, Michael does an excellent job of showing the appropriateness of the annuity. The book was written at the basic level for the investor, capturing an informative overview of the many different investment options such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds and how the annuity fits into the investor's overall investment strategy. I would highly recommend this book to all investors!
Excellent book..........1998-11-25
I've read many different points of view about the value of VAs -- this book explains them clearly. Lane's book shows how tax deferral wroks. He takes you step-by-step so you can see how all the parts relate and why. Read chapters 5 "Suitable Uses of VAs" and ch 18 "Analyzing the Payout" and you will know more than most advisors. Great book congrads.
A great guide for financial planners and end consumers........1998-11-25
Having been in this business for 5 years it's nice to find a refreshing look at the real uses of variable annuities and when they make the most sense. Michael is very enlightening in his approach to when a variable annuity makes sense and for whom. He also is very concise in his description of all the factors which contribute to determining the above. In an industry which is muddled with both the pros and cons of variable annuities this book is a straight shot to doing what is in the best interest of the client.
Great book for Annuity Buyers.......1998-11-25
I am a novice investor and had no idea what an annuity was. Lane's book gave me the basics of what stocks and bonds were all the way through how to buy and annuity and use it to create a income to last my lifetime. I highly recommend this book.
A must for those considering purchasing an annuity........1998-10-28
An excellent primer on annuities. Any investor should read this book before considering purchasing an annuity. As a financial advisor I found his explanations simple yet definitive. Written in manner that any investor will be able to benefit from Michael's sound advice. While I believe that in general annuities are the most oversold product in financial circles (not becuse they are great product but because sellers earn huge commissions), Michael clearly demonstrates that annuities are appropriate in certain situations and tells you how to avoid the annuities that were designed to be sold not bought. He shows you what to type of product to look for when annuities are appropriate. Highly recommended.
Book Description
The book introduces and develops the basic actuarial models and underlying pricing of life-contingent pension annuities and life insurance from a unique financial perspective. The ideas and techniques are then applied to the real-world problem of generating sustainable retirement income towards the end of the human life-cycle. The role of lifetime income, longevity insurance, and systematic withdrawal plans are investigated in a parsimonious framework. The underlying technology and terminology of the book are based on continuous-time financial economics by merging analytic laws of mortality with the dynamics of equity markets and interest rates. Nonetheless, the book requires a minimal background in mathematics and emphasizes applications and examples more than proofs and theorems. It can serve as an ideal textbook for an applied course on wealth management and retirement planning in addition to being a reference for quantitatively-inclined financial planners.
Customer Reviews:
living and dying is so complicated to model!.......2006-06-06
To many people, the book's topic is an inherently dreary and offputting one. How to estimate retirement income for a group of people, who typically are still in the workplace?
To do so, the book invokes such common ideas as numerical simulations. Here, of a general diffusion process, specialising to Brownian motion. Who could have imagined, decades ago, when such ideas were introduced in physics, that they would one day have use to actuaries and the like? A neat side note is that one of the book's problems involves using Excel's ability to simulate Brownian processes.
A key chapter compares defined benefit and defined contribution pensions. From the vantage of the pension provider. Who needs to understand as accurately as possible the ultimate costs of both, in order to determine what to offer employees.
Where is the additional material?.......2006-05-08
I purchased this book over a month ago. I expected to receive additional supporting materials which would greatly aid my understanding of the various formulas used throughout the book. The additional supporting material has yet to be posted. As such, currently, i feel i have been overpromised and underdelivered.

Great for ideas on how to become a stay-at-home mom!!.......2007-04-13
I thought this was a great book on exploring the ways in which a mom could stay home vs. working......I am a very happy stay-at-home mom and was looking for some ideas on saving money, so this book wasn't the right choice for me. While some tips were listed, it was largely geared toward exploring the pros/cons, etc. of working vs. stay-at-home moms. A great book for those in that situation!

Cheater!.......2007-02-17
Appears selling calls may have been to slow for the author. He's figured out that he can make more money and faster by selling books and software subscriptions. And, even more money selling the same book to you twice. "Cash for Life" is a ripoff of his previous work "Covered Calls and Naked Puts". With the exception of his "Visions" methodology, it is literally word for word. Is it ethical to plagiarize your own work? It's like a student turning in the same work to two different teachers. While he may have updated his options trading examples and added a new methodology, this "new book" (to use the term loosely) should have been released as an updated edition to the earlier book. At the least, it should have been disclosed in the book's promotion and on his website. Could he have possibly given a discount to a buyer that had also purchased "Covered Calls and Naked Puts"?
His earlier book, "Covered Calls and Naked Puts", was a fair primer in selling covered calls. So, why didn't the author take this opportunity to introduce his "Visions" in a more advanced book with a new storyline. It would have been nice to see deeper discussions his investment reasonings rather than just rely upon his mathematical models. Here are some ideas. A chapter on "alternatives to letting yourself get assigned" (ie. covering the call; rolling forward, upward or downward; or buying it back when it premium is well below its initial sale and there is still significant time left til expiration) would be worthwhile even if this isn't the author's trading style. Also, a chapter on the "tax implications of options" should be included since there are some pretty obscure tax rules out there; they have their own variations of what is considered short-term and long-term transactions. And, what about the "wash-sale rule"? Is this something the options investor/trader needs to consider? I'll let you field that one Ronald.
Informative but.......2007-02-12
This book is informative but you have to spend more money to use his software to be able to use his methods. At the end of it all you still have to know if a stock is going to go up or down in price. If anyone knew that then why complicated your investing with options and just buy the stock outright to make a profit. I also wonder why if this method is so good why would he want to share it and how does he have time for these seminars, software programming, etc? WOuldny he be busy selling options all day and making money? I assume he makes more money selling us his books, tools, and seminars.
Great book on how to get rich slow!.......2006-11-06
Mr. Groenke's book presents a very readable, step by step approach to learning about covered calls. He also provides some very good informaiton on how to pick the stocks that are good to hold while working with options. I recommend this book highly to those who are interested in adding wealth building potential without taking on additional risk.
Very, Very Basic.......2006-09-21
Intersting style of writing as previouse reviewer indicated and at the same time obviouse he had no idea of what an option was. For anyone with the slightest knowlege of options it becomes apparent that the main purpose of this book is to get one to purchase Mr Groenke's option software. With out it which he constantly referes to, his formulia's would result in endless hours of tedious calculations. After spending $29 on this book and finding it is really a primar for his software would be disapointing to anyone trying to get a basic understanding of how selling options works. His software may be great and worth the money but its a little misleading to promote this book as a stand alone. I'm not a reviewer, just someone that buys and mostly sells options and can't figure how anyone could give this 5 stars, or buy this book without understanding you really need his software to get any benifit from the book. That of course assumes your not a proffeser sitting in an office somwhere as opposed to really utilizing options.
Good Material and Easy Read.......2006-08-18
The book is easy to read and follow. The concepts and examples are complete and make it easy to understand. I enjoyed the story. It has peaked my interest and I am reading more books to get a better understanding on more option's trading strategies. I feel confindent I now understand some of the benefits of trading covered calls.
I hope to be implementing the process in the book in the next few months.
Many Thanks to Ron!
Book Description
The financial-service industry wants you to believe that in order to avoid financial destitution, you need to put aside huge amounts of money that you -- let's say it together -- "should have begun saving years ago."
Not true, states Warner, the author of Get a Life. Although a sensible savings plan makes good horse sense, many other actions and decisions will determine whether you enjoy your retirement years.
Get a Life shows you how to beat the anxiety surrounding retirement, and to develop a plan to make your golden years the best of your life by:
* developing family relationships
* maintaining and creating friendships
* improving health
* keeping active
* developing a robust curiosity for the world
* realistically calculating how much money you need and how to secure it
Interviews with successful (and successfully) retired people illustrate how to put Warner's advice into action.

Easy and Fun to Read.......2006-11-11
I enjoyed this book so much, that my boss, brother & sister all wanted copies, so I gave them each their own to read!
This book is right......you DON'T need a million!.......2006-05-02
I have to admit I would have been far more skeptical about the points made in this book if I hadn't seen people already living on far less than a million dollars...and doing just fine.
One lived independently for years (admittedly, not on a champagne and caviar budget, but not poorly, either) and then moved into a nursing home, all expenses paid. This person is happy. Health costs have not driven that person to poverty and the medical care is just fine.
Another friend lives modestly but has family and friends nearby, an active social life and lives in a lovely Arts and Crafts style bungalow, bought for a modest amount and very tastefully decorated. She lives (as this book suggests) a life full of meaningful activities, many of them free, some of them volunteer work, some of them low-cost or free programs such as concerts in the parks or nature programs or lectures. Again, not an expensive lifestyle.. but fully satisfying.
ONE SUGGESTION: If you read this book, it is quite possible that you can start NOW to learn to live on far less money than you may be spending mindlessly today - and not feel deprived. If you do that, of course, you may save even more for your later years, when health issues and other concerns may impact your finances in a less predictable manner than today.
In any case, this is a refreshing change from the books which promote worry and anxiety about not being able to afford retirement. This book advocates finding a happy medium, neither advocating a "no savings" plan or needless worry and obsessions about the future and doomsday scenarios.
Not a bad overview, has some good ideas, but beware..........2006-01-09
The 'Where will the Money come from' chapter , pgs 240-244 on Social Security, is delusional. The author seems to think that Social Security is safe, that pending boomers will get full benefits, and nothing is further from the truth. The author should check the annual letter from Social security that states that withdrawls will exceed contributions within the next 10 years unless something is done. Nothing will be done because our politicians have no spine and are afraid of not being around to milk the tax payer and receive endless kickbacks and graft, all the while being exempt from the very system created as a last resort.
His other ideas are good, however, and worth a read. Id get it from the library first before I decided if I wanted to keep this book around.
An excellent handbook for holistic retirement planning.......2005-11-26
I read this book along with several others two years ago as my husband and I contemplated early retirement. It was by far the best book I read. Most other books were the author's personal musings about what makes for a good retirement. In contrast, Warner's book backs up his views with both solid research and compelling testimonies from actual retirees. He doesn't downplay the importance of financial well-being in retirement, just puts it in context as ONE element of successful retirement. As someone who's now been retired (at age 52) for a year, I can attest to the usefulness of this book. It helped me honestly analyze my own life situation and has been a catalyst for some of the choices and decisions I am making as I create a life without (much) work. Warner's admonishment that you have to start integrating good practices in your life BEFORE retirement is particularly important; for example, if you don't foster close and healthy relationships with your family and friends when you are younger, they aren't going to magically happen once you're retired. Likewise for good health and spiritual habits. I highly recommend this book to anyone, regardless of age, who wants practical and sage advice on building a fulfilling life in retirement.
A few comments.......2005-10-02
Like all "royal road to retirement" advice books this one is a mixed bag with some very sage and wise advice on some topics, but weaker on other topics with a lot of facile generalities and waving of hands in regard to how actually to do it on less than a million bucks. Overall though, I applaud the author's emphasis on quality of life vs. a life devoid of meaning and quality personal relationships but with plenty of money--which is what the financial types will try to sell you. As some wag once said, real money is easy to come by--it just takes a lifetime of hard work. Of course, by that time, your wife has left you, your kids hate you, and you have no friends. What's the point of that? I think a compromise is therefore in order, with a downscaled, more modest retirement but with having preserved one's family and friendships intact. On the other hand, this is America, the land of the Almighty Dollar, to which we all bow and scrape and perform obeisance, and if you've got a gadzillion bucks up the wazzoo you can always buy friends, if you can call them that. And I've discovered that in the U.S., money truly does buy friendship of a sort--at least you'll never be bored and alone on a Friday or Saturday night. Anyway, whatever you decide, this book offers an alternative. The decision is up to you.

Must BUY Book! It is loaded with a lot of information, techniques and methods.......2007-07-26
I decided to buy the Audio book version of the Million Dollar Habits, and this book is loaded with a lot of AWESOME life changing information, techniques and methods.
Brian Tracy will help you improve your emotional and financial intelligence that a lot of people are lacking! Most people make a lot of financial decision based on their emotion, and their emotion gets them into a lot of trouble, like buying a luxury car that they can't afford! They look good but they go no where financially.
If you are really serious of trying to improve your financial life, this book is must read! Thank you again Brian Tracy for putting together a great program like this one!
Must buy!
Million dollar Habits.......2007-05-14
This audio Book really helps to focus your mind on wealth creation.
Every time you listen to it you pick up something new.
My Advice is to have your pen and note pad ready to jot down the ideas.
Great, Practical Advice.......2007-03-29
This is an interesting book in that it takes a look at the little things we do every day...our habits... and points out how those little things add up to what makes our lives prosperous and extraordinary or average. Tracy addresses everything we do from how we think about money to what we eat and if we do or don't exercise. Since I own my own coaching business and coach other business people, I especially liked the chapter on marketing and sales. His 7 P Formula was really helpful for those who think marketing and sales are beneath them or too difficult. The final "P" is people. First, last and always, we must be about people and how we treat them. If for nothing else, I give this book a high rating. Even though it is about becoming wealthy, Tracy makes clear the truth, that without people an good relationships everywhere, the millions won't bring what you really want them for: to be happy.
Anyone can do this if they put their mind to it and follow the practices in this book........2007-01-10
Brian Tracy shares proven power practices that you can turn into habits that can help you become a millionare or be succesful. Changing habits is a hard job, identifying what those habits need to be and replacing bad habits with habits that can help you be succesful is no longer a mystery. Brian will give you tips, ideas and specific steps you can take to make a huge change in your life. I have taken many of his ideas and tried them and I can tell you that they work. Try it for yourself and you will see a big difference in your quality of life.
I doubled my income this past year following this advice!.......2006-10-13
While there is much new information in this book, what hit me on the head like a baseball bat was all of the things that I already new but wasn't doing and never made them habits. It's not what you know, it's what you use. Tracy has a way of hammering this.
Some people didn't like the book? That is there opinion and choice. But I have to wonder how they are doing financially and what they do with their time?

Living well and doing fine........2006-11-05
Cynthia Yates' 'Living Well on One Income' is a good read. It has humor, lots of personal examples that anyone can identify with, and it is filled with good tips. Yates challenges our attitudes about money and belongings and encourages everyone to "Waste Not, Want Not."
Living on One Income in a Two Income World.......2006-03-11
Absolutely loved it. Great book. I recommend it to everyone.
Great motivator.......2004-12-30
This book was very well-written and instantly got me in the mood to reorganize my life! As a stay at home Mom, my husband and I were desperate to find ways to "cut corners." The author makes it very clear in the beginning of the book that she was NOT writing about debt management, investing, saving, etc. This is purely a book about organizing your life, your home, and how to be smart and frugal with things like shopping. It had great insight. I knew before I got this book that it is spiritual-based, and that's exactly what I was looking for too. I wanted a book that also followed my beliefs in the Bible and not simply a worldly view. I think that's a great asset to the book!
Definitely a great buy!
Some good tips, but not what I was hoping for.......2004-04-03
This book is interesting reading, but to me it read more like a hodge-podge of frugality tips, random anecdotes, and Sunday school lessons than an organized approach to making your money go further. The author is really enthusiastic, and she gives some very accurate and humorous descriptions of the clutter to be found in many homes. But I really had to pay attention to mine the best tips from the book because they got lost in hype, strange personal stories, and religious discussions. Some of the advice in the book struck me as just plain weird, such as to stay away from your microwave because it might explode; to put a bowl of ammonia into a warm oven to clean it (I can just imagine the smell !); to buy food in bulk and re-can it at home (that just sounds dangerous to me); to give someone a year's worth of old magazines tied up in ribbon as a gift. Finally, this book is very religious; there are references to scripture from the Bible inserted into almost every discussion. I don't mind a book on personal finance including some discussion of the spiritual basis of abundance, but I had a difficult time making the connection between the religious ideas presented and the surrounding points, and it just felt like opportunistic preaching to me. Overall I felt this book sort of meandered around without providing any clear direction that would help someone to change the way they think about money. Two alternatives to this book are "Your Money or Your Life: Transforming Your Relationship With Money and Achieving Financial Independence" by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin, and "The Tao of Abundance" by Laurence G. Boldt. In closing, I will contribute my own frugality tip....if you want to read this book, do what I did and check it out from the library so you don't spend any money on it.

A Must read for any mom!.......2007-04-04
I read this book for clues on how to become a stay at home mom. I purchased quite a few books and found this one to be most helpful. She not only tells you how to do it, she gives great examples of what she did that worked and what didn't work!
Only so...so.......2007-02-22
I don't really think this book gives much depth on the art of living on less. I would recommend The Tightwad Gazette if you want to learn to live on one income and look for this one at the library, there is really very little advice that isn't obvious.
Life changing book.......2006-12-12
This book is a must have for any woman transitioning from "work outside the home" to "stay at home". It is chock full of wisdom and great ideas! This is no "wash & reuse your plastic baggies" kind of book. It has fantastic practical helps on everything from helping your grocery budget to making your own play-dough and non-toxic cleaning products. I have read and re-read this book many times.
Kick-started my frugal lifestyle.......2006-11-03
I found this book used at the bookstore and traded some unwanted books to get it, and that was the best "purchase" I have made in a long time. Other reviewers who say that she does focus heavily on food are correct, but for me that was great, because I do spend a lot on food and it seemed like a good place to start.
She shares general tips as well about places that commonly eat up our money, so it is a good book to get started with because it is focused in one direction and also has a lot of springboards for other areas of your life where you can save. Her tips never seemed like they went too far or would make me feel deprived, in fact a lot of her tips are based around developing more awareness of where your money is going, and she has a lot of ideas that I found very helpful.
So this is a great book to get started with, especially a used copy (I have an older edition and am finding it helpful even though some of the prices are outdated), and then when you have squeezed the usefulness out of this book, go for the Tightwad Gazette next. The Tightwad Gazette is a bit overwhelming for beginners, so I do recommend this book first. I have gotten a lot out of it.
Very Misleading - Focuses too much on Groceries.......2006-09-12
I applaud Ms. McCoy's obvious success and recognize that she has helped many families. However, I think this book is very misleading. It basically outlines how to find the extra money to stay home by changing the way you grocery shop. There are numerous other ways to save enough money when you lose or give up an income. I assumed the book would focus on all aspects of possible savings. If I had realized the book was so heavily focused on shopping and cooking, I would not have purchased it. I recognize that the author touches on other areas and suggests applying her cost-savings suggestions with groceries to all other aspects of your life. But, a book about how to grocery shop frugally is not what I thought I was buying. I think it's an excellent resource for people who want that, it should just be titled and marketed as what it is.
I must also note that the book includes an entire, very long, chapter of recipes. I did not think that was appropriate since the book is not presented as focusing on meals. And, most of the chapters are way too brief (many have less than five pages of information). I also worry that planning meals by only focusing on store sales has a much greater health cost from poor nutrition down the road.
I am glad that Ms. McCoy's choices seem to work well for her and I hope they help others who are interested in a similar approach. I just wanted to share what the book really focuses on for people who prefer a different approach to finding a way to afford being at home.
