5 out of 5 stars Just Read It!.......2007-07-26

This book is easy to read, makes you laugh, teaches you how to write better and helps you raise more money. It just doesn't get any better any this. If you write anything to donors or prospective donors you should stop and read this first. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars All Fundraisers Can Benefit From This Book.......2007-06-18

For research purposes, I have more than 30,000 direct mail samples, countless annual reports, and hundreds of newsletters in my business library. And I'd say probably anywhere from 2 to 3% of them are really good (that means they raise a lot of money). They practice what Tom Ahern teaches you in his new book.

If you've ever had the opportunity to see Tom present - and he presents at many conferences around North America - then you'll know why you need this book. His way of thinking about donors, and what they want, will enable you to improve almost any donor-directed publication that you produce.

I strongly encourage anyone working for a nonprofit to buy this book - almost certainly it will improve the quality of the information you give to your donors, and the amount of money they give to you.

5 out of 5 stars Like being in a candy shop with a pocketful of money.......2007-05-21

Two great things about Tom Ahern: 1) he writes in crisp, clear, jargon-free language, and 2) virtually every sentence contains advice or a tip I can actually use. In this straightforward but packed book, he taught me to always put myself in the donor's shoes when I'm writing, to never write anything that doesn't include an offer, to run like hell from "writing by committee", the emotional triggers that get people reaching for their wallets, and how to write great headlines and good copy. I'm not sure what else you can ask from a book that fits in your back pocket, reads deliciously the second and third time, and even apologizes for leaving out a chapter he'd call "Feeling Stupid". Feeling stupid is what you should feel if you don't order this book right after you finish this review.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Ahern is the best!.......2007-04-22

You can find lots of stuff in print about writing fundraising materials -- but you won't find any book that's more squarely on point or more clearly and compellingly written. Tom Ahern is a master of writing for results. This superb new book is a must for anyone who writes to raise money.

Book Description

There's a sleeping giant in your midst. One with enormous fundraising potential. And unless your newsletter is bringing in thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars every year, it's time to shake it from its slumber. Today, countless organizations are raising more money with their newsletter than with traditional mail appeals. And after reading Tom Ahern's riveting book, Raising More Money with Newsletters than You Ever Thought Possible, it's easy to understand why. Great newsletters, as distinguished from the mundane ones many of us receive, have so much more going for them. For starters, they deliver real news (not tired features such as "From the Director's Desk'' and "Introducing Our New Staff"). They make the donor feel important. They use emotional triggers to spur action. They're designed in a way to attract both browsers and readers. And they don't depend on dry statistics to make the organization's case. Ahern knows newsletters inside and out. Not only has he written his fair share, but he's analyzed scores of them for other organizations. Moreover, his workshop, "How to Write Great Donor Newsletters," is consistently over-subscribed. So when he speaks - as he does in engaging and eloquent prose- you hang onto his every word. The essence of Raising More Money with Newsletters than You Ever Thought Possible centers around seven fatal flaws, as Ahern calls them. "Almost every donor newsletter I see suffers from at least one of the flaws," he says early in the book. "You would be shocked by how many newsletters suffer from all seven." Along the way to discussing - and dissecting - these fatal flaws, the reader is treated to such chapters as: o Making news out of thin air o What a front page is for o Lower the grade level of your writing o Anecdotes versus stats o How should it look? A proven formula And those are only five of the 45! succinct chapters in this book. Chances are you already have a newsletter, that's the good news. You have the vehicle in place. The even better news is that transforming your newsletter into a substantial money raiser isn't all that difficult. As Ahern himself says, "You don't need a degree in journalism to publish a newsletter that will keep your donors inspired (and generous). You just need a few skills and insights." Read this book. Pick up those skills. And be assured that the ratio of time spent versus gains realized might well be the most cost-effective of your entire career.

Concisely and sharply written with easy to use advice. Affirmed things that I "knew" but had forgotten about. Used the advice and our newest newsletter has much more "pop" to it. I'll be interested to see if there will be an uptick in donations following its release in a week or so.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2006-07-22

Hi Tom,

Your book Raising More Money With Newsletters Than You Ever Thought Possible is terrific!

I started reading it just after completing a quarterly newsletter. I can't seem to finish your book because I keep running to the computer to "fix up" the thing I had thought was a newsletter. I am reading this on a stay-at-home-day-for-reading and when I'm not at the keyboard I am phoning colleagues with new ideas. They may never let me read again.

I heard you speak at the AFP Congress in Toronto and knew this would be a good book. Thanks for making it even better than that.

Are you changing the world? Maybe not. But you are certain to change newsletter writing!

Julie Kinkaid

5 out of 5 stars Save the Newsletters!.......2006-06-29

This book will save you money and time. It's a quick, fun read, and there are great tips on every page. Moreover, it is research-based, with practical ways of implementing all the ideas. No BS, no wild hairs, just sound, practical advice. It will be "immediately usable," to steal the perfect caption of another reviewer.

This book turned up while I was mulling over creating two different newsletters for two different organizations. My earlier involvements with newsletters were a bit frustrating. Tons and tons of work went into them, but their impact was disappointing, despite some really good content.

Reading this book, I finally understand why my earlier attempts were, well, stinkers. I was using bad models and repeating bad habits so commonl in this industry. Now, I feel that I have the tools to make much more effective marketing pieces. One of my upcoming newsletters is actually going to be a rescue job of a lackluster publication, and this book has helped me to see exactly how to fix it--and to make putting it together a much easier task.

And to steal another idea from an earlier reviewer, I too am going to give this to some people I know, who really need this excellent advice.

The proof is in the pudding, here. Ahern follows his own advice, and his book is totally engaging, convincing, and if he was a non-profit organization rather than an author, I'd send him a check. "Save the Newsletters!" How much is a membership?

Really, get it. It will help all of your writing, not just newsletters. I hope the author writes more, on similar topics, maybe a general book on writing marketing copy. We need more smart, fun, practical, and mercifully brief resources like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Quick, easy read that is full of helpful advice.......2006-06-27

I love this book and have already implemented several recommendations. It is easily worth the purchase price.

5 out of 5 stars Immediately Usable!.......2006-03-18

I couldn't put the book down! I really enjoyed the straightforward approach combined with psychology behind getting your message across! I made notes and gave to our committee!

Book Description

Nonprofit staff, board members, and volunteers who are passionate about the mission of their organization but tired of the old model of raising funds will be inspired by this incisive and practical manual.

Fundraising veteran and Raising More Money founder Terry Axelrod shows how nonprofit organizations—regardless of size, location, or mission—can become financially self-sustaining. A Step-by-Step Guide to Building Lifelong Donors has been nominated by the Alliance for Nonprofit Management for its 11th Annual Terry McAdam Book Award for the most inspirational and useful new book published that makes a substantial contribution to nonprofit management, management consultancy, or the advancement of the nonprofit sector. The third edition of this fundraising guidebook expands on key aspects of the Raising More Money Model, including fresh material on:

-How to customize the Cultivation Superhighway for each of your donors -How to design a cultivation/recognition system you can leave as a legacy -How to ask naturally, with a focus on donor readiness -How to manage relationships with existing donors online and convert newly acquired online donors to in-person donors

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars CRM for Non-profit.......2005-06-16

Terry gives you practical advice on how to create lifelong donors. She encourages you to think about your donor as your customer, and advocates managing the relationship. She also encourages you to set your vision and your system in place to encourage attracting people that will be passionate about your cause. She gently reminds you that 80% of the funds that are donated on an annual basis are donated by individuals as opposed to organizations- a fact that many fundraisers forget about in their quest to raise money.

She shows effective ways to get people in the boat with you! I am so impressed I am planning on taking one of her Raising More Money Workshops. I highly recommend this book. There are so many wonderful pointers that you will want to read it slowly with a high lighter and a pen to take notes!

5 out of 5 stars A Seattle-based company that trains non-profit organizations.......2005-01-04

Founded and directed by Terry Axelrod, "Raising More Money" is a Seattle-based company that trains non-profit organizations in fundraising. A successful enterprise in its own right, Raising More Money has grown from 2 employees to 50, and has trained more than 2,000 organizations to date, with the average of $150,000 being raised by a nonprofit client group within a year of training. In Raising More Money: The Ask Event Handbook, Terry Axelrod (who is also the Director of the American Association of Fundraising Counsels; a Trustee of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce; and a Life Trustee of the Swedish Medical Center; and the founder of three nonprofit organizations) has distilled into a single volume the complete body of "how to" information for successfully raising money at a nonprofit fundraising event. Readers will learn how to determine when to hold an "Ask Event"; how to build a powerful, emotion-filled, one-hour program honoring the nonprofit organization's mission; how to conduct one-on-one "Asks"; how to evaluate results and follow-up with guests; and how to prepare for the next year's event. If you are charged with responsibility for fundraising with respect to a nonprofit organization, then you need to give a close and careful reading of Terry Axelrod's Raising More Money: The Ask Event Handbook. Also very highly recommended from Raising More Money Publications are: The Point Of Entry Handbook ($39.95, 263 pages); The Ask Event Handbook ($49.95, 238 pages); Raising More Money Video or DVD ($69.95, 47 minutes); and the Re-Igniting Your Board ($39.95, 21 minutes). Nonprofit and community library collections would be wise to acquire all five items in the form of the Raising More Money Library ($189.95).

5 out of 5 stars Both Revolutionary and Evolutionary.......2001-03-20

Imagine your organization having a development plan that includes nothing but major donors and qualified prospects. No more special event fundraisers, no more sweating grant applications, no more "moves management" from sub-$100 donors to $500 to $5,000 to endowment givers, no more living hand-to-mouth and year-to-year. Terry Axelrod presents a compelling case for restructuring the development function using a combination of revolutionary and evolutionary thinking.

In reading this book, I was finding myself alternately saying, "Wow! What an innovative approach!" and "That's a different way of saying what everyone's doing now!" The key to understanding these (seemingly) conflicting reactions is that the author proposes to: 1) treat all donors and prospects as major donors and prospects; and 2) not solicit support at any lower level. She believes that a relatively small coterie of well-cultivated, passionate "friends" of a nonprofit bring far more stability and benefit to a nonprofit than the traditional "donor pyramid."

One key to the success of her model is to AVOID asking for money until the prospect is ready to give. Many development directors would cringe at the donation opportunities the author encourages one to pass up in favor of cultivating a deeper, longer-lasting relationship. Facility tours, special events, and similar happenings are intended to be free, open, and low-pressure opportunities for the community to learn about the organization and its mission and for the organization to learn contact information on attendees and who is most likely to be interested in further contact on the donor's chosen terms.

One point made fairly early will unnerve many volunteer managers. Ms. Axelrod points out that relatively few nonprofit organizations are ready to listen to a prospective donor/volunteer and be prepared to accept what they are most willing to give. If the nonprofit makes it easy for the donor to identify a need and volunteer the time and/or resources to fill that need, then they will have made a friend as well as enhanced services. Ms. Axelrod places volunteer management squarely in the development arena and takes it out of its "unpaid employee/HR management" status. Volunteers are donors and donors are volunteers, and they need to be recognized, cultivated, and sustained in the organization for their blended, "customer-driven" status. This also means that the donor who "just writes the check" will also disappear, since the writers of the larger checks also tend to be involved in the nonprofit as volunteers.

In Ms. Axelrod's model, the lowest donor level is $1,000 per year ($83 per month), with a five-year commitment to give at that level. From there, donors may be requested to give additional gifts during the period, accelerate the fulfillment of their pledges, increase their pledges, and refer selected friends and acquaintances. Rather than the traditional "strong-arm the Rolodex®" fundraising model, donors invite friends to free, no obligation meet-and-greet/tour "point of entry" events as new entrants into the donor cycle.

The obvious advantages to this approach are that most giving is made by individuals, that most individuals are likely to give a gift, even when not properly cultivated, that properly cultivated donors will give more, more often, and longer than those not properly cultivated. The disadvantages in this approach are that it requires a fair amount of planning, absolute "buy-in" from all levels of staff, and some "front-end" investment in time and energy. However, the benefits in organizational financial stability, constituent loyalty, and independence from vagaries in grant funding cycles, political shifts, and economic trends are huge.

The book itself is structured somewhat like a donation cycle (in this case, the "Raising More Money Model"), with a few chapters dedicated to overview of the process, followed by chapters delving a little deeper into the specific steps, and ending with several chapters discussing specific strategies for specific steps in the cycle. There is a little repetition and reinforcement in using this structural technique, but that's a good thing and not at all overdone. Ms. Axelrod refers to her "Raising More Money" seminars, and it's easy to see the book's contents as components of two or three curricula, complete with the "tell 'em what they're going to hear, tell 'em, and then tell 'em what they heard" structure that works so effectively with adult learners in practical learning situations.

This book is far more than a traditional "how to" cookbook; it's both a theoretical challenge to traditional fundraising and a practical, step-by-step primer for implementation of Ms. Axelrod's new paradigm of fundraising. Even those who challenge her premise will be hard-pressed to challenge her implementation techniques.

      Book Description

Would you leave all and go to the mission field by faith alone? Is this really what the Bible teaches about how missionaries should be financially and spiritually supported? Should churches, friends, and family send their missionaries off to the "field" without being sure they have adequate support? Should mission agencies encourage new recruits who do not have established financial and spiritual backing? Does the Bible teach missionaries to live on the promises of God and not be concerned for physical and financial needs? Or, does God have a plan for those He calls and sends out to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth? If so, what is the plan? In this book, Dr. Johnson shows that God laid down the plan and the principles for missionary support in the Old Testament. He demonstrates from Scripture how The Lord Jesus and the apostle Paul picked up on this plan and those principles from personal experience and through their teaching. The author provides biblically based, practical suggestions on how to develop, with the help of friends and churches, a missionary sending team. The author has received many comments from participants in seminars and consulting, comments such as these: "Going through this workshop was the turning point for me." "Everyone in this organization should have this training. Where have you been?" "The workshop transformed my whole outlook. I can go forward now with the confidence this is God's way." Dr. Johnson has a BA in Elementary Education from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, an MA in Educational Administration from California State University at Northridge, and a PhD in Public School Administration from the University of Florida, Gainesville. He and wife Dona have served with Wycliffe Bible Translators for over thirty years. They have two sons, and two grandchildren.

        Book Description

Fundraising experts know that successful direct mail requires a continual search for improvements in copy, package formats, and lists through trial-and-error testing. There is no doubt that testing—when done correctly—can raise more money for your organization. In Testing, Testing, 1,2,3 direct mail and fundraising expert Mal Warwick shows how the cumulative value of thoughtful, systematic testing can help your organization reach its direct mail fundraising goals. This reader-friendly guide will take you through each phase of the scientific process of discovering your organization's ideal combination of direct mail offer, package, and postage. Like Warwick's other, widely quoted books on fundraising, Testing, Testing, 1,2,3 is based on an abundance of real-world examples drawn from his more than two decades of experience in direct mail.

5 out of 5 stars Great analytical tool!.......2004-02-25

Beyond the great examples and readable style, this book practically condenses information taught in statistical and data analysis courses ... and presents it in an extremely useful and readable way. So practical! This is a must read for people serious about improving their direct mail program. I am constantly getting mail and wondering "what were they thinking when they put this together?" This book will help you avoid some of those pitfalls.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview on How Ready You Are to Do More Fundraising.......2000-07-09

This workbook is aimed at the leader of a nonprofit organization that is raising funds or plans to engage in fundraising. I read it from the perspective of a board member for a nonprofit that desperately needs to raise more funds, and I found it very helpful. I recommended that our executive director get and use this workbook.

The workbook is jointly sponsored by the Center for Philanthropy at Indiana University and the Department of Public Administration at Baruch College/The City University of New York. It was tested anonymously with organization executives to help them improve their fundraising before being published.

As the author states, "This guide is for nonprofit leaders who are not satisfied with the amounts of money their organizations are raising." That must be about everyone.

The book works in three areas: (1) assessing your present fundraising to see what you can do to improve on it (2) using your analysis to convince your board or other executives that spending time and money to improve long-term fundraising capability is a good investment and (3) getting in the habit of using self-assessment of your fundraising.

The initial self-assessment is broken up into three parts: your general structure and management; your fundraising readiness; and the effectiveness of your fundraising efforts now.

You then use the results of the initial self-assessment to get support based on what was learned. If your assessment is strong enough, you can go on to look more closely at various areas for fundraising in the second set of self-assessments: directors, major donors, direct mail campaigns, corporations, foundations, government agencies, special events, federated fundraising organizations like The United Way, bequests and planned giving, and telethons. Each area has its own set of self-assessment questions.

I found the questions to be very effective in diagnosing why the nonprofit I serve with makes progress in some areas and doesn't in other areas. If we choose to, we can use these lists to pick our opportunities and organize our actions. I hope we do that.

Even if you plan to use a fundraising consultant, I think this workbook would be a good background to use first to put yourself in perspective for the advice your consultant will give you.

The book also has a very thorough appendix of resources (tied to each subject), an extensive bibliography, list of periodicals, and resource groups you can draw on. My only concern was how up-to-date this information is, given the age of the book. One of the resource organizations can probably help you with that if you cannot find something or someone.

Overcome your stalled thinking about how you should raise funds, become more effective, and serve all humanity more effectively as a result!

Funding Principles that Empower Ministry: Lessons drawn from EQUIP

Pastors do not enter the ministry because they like to ask for money, but most discover quickly that fundraising is essential if their ministry is going to succeed. In this book, Doug Carter shows how to teach givers to participate in ministry with their gifts and offerings. Using examples from EQUIP and from EQUIP partners who have successfully used these principles in their churches and ministries, Doug shows the reader how to build relationships into stewardship and then create partnerships for ministry.

In his foreword to Raising More Than Money, Dr. John C. Maxwell says, "Doug's vocation in the realm of development has focused more on teaching givers to reflect the giving nature of Christ than about raising money. I'm confident that if you embrace the principles that Doug shares, it will impact your life now and throughout eternity."
