Product Description

As its title implies, this book is the Handbook for the Professional Risk Manager. It is for those professionals who seek to demonstrate their skills in the field of financial risk management and for those looking simply for an excellent reference source. With contributions from nearly 40 leading authors, the Handbook is designed to provide you with the materials needed to gain the knowledge and understanding of the building blocks of professional financial risk management. Financial risk management is not about avoiding risk. Rather, it is about understanding and communicating risk, so that risk can be taken more confidently and in a better way. Whether your specialism is in insurance, banking, energy, asset management, weather, or one of myriad other industries, this Handbook is your guide. In Section I, we introduce the foundations of finance theory, the financial instruments that provide tools for the mitigation or transfer of risk, and the financial markets in which instruments are traded and capital is raised. In Section II, we take you through the mathematical foundations of risk assessment. While there are many nuances to the practice of risk management that go beyond the quantitative, it is essential today for every risk manager to be able to assess risks. The chapters in this section are accessible to all, including those without any quantitative skills. The online Excel spreadsheets that accompany the examples are an invaluable aid to understanding the mathematical and statistical concepts that form the basis of risk assessment. In Section III, the current and best practices of Market, Credit and Operational risk management are described. This is where we take the foundations of Sections I and II and apply them to our profession in very specific ways. Here the strategic application of risk management to capital allocation and risk-adjusted performance measurement takes hold. At the end of your progression through these materials, you will find that you have broadened your knowledge and skills in ways that you might not have imagined. You will have challenged yourself as well. And, you will be a better risk manager. It is for this reason that we have created the Professional Risk Managers' Handbook.

4 out of 5 stars Invaluable for the Risk Management Professional.......2005-07-12

As reflects a book published by an organization dedicated to improving professionalism in a field as broad as financial risk management, the contents are both wide and deep. Contributors are all experts in their individual fields - leading academics (providing underlying theory) and experienced practitioners (providing pragmatic, practical advice). As would be expected, the contents are best when the topic is well established, such as with Credit Risk, but less so in newer disciplines, such as Operational Risk. It is a book that will be close at hand to, and well thumbed by, practicing risk managers but also one that can give non-practicing managers and students an insight into some very complex topics.

4 out of 5 stars The Practical Guide.......2001-11-22

Compared to many other Corporate Finance books I enjoy this one for a structure of the presented material , clear explanations supported by real examples, concept checks , odd numbers answers (provided at the end of the textbook) to the exercises. Definitely it gives me a guidance to handle many everyday cases. In addition , for me truly helpful is huge information on the textbook"s website.
This one is the first Corporate F. book I used to study without feelings of something boring , abstract , overloaded by awesome math.
I would give 5 stars if Online Study Tools had items: "eGrade Self-test" , "Business Extra" materials (as specified - Coming Soon!) and (to many Chapters)- "Additional Readings" from business articles / websites.

Book Description

The Theory and Practice of Revenue Management is a book that comprehensively covers theory and practice of the entire field, including both quantity and price-based RM, as well as significant coverage of supporting topics such as forecasting and economics. The authors believe such a comprehensive approach is necessary to fully understand the subject. A central objective of the book is to unify the various forms of RM and to link them closely to each other and to the supporting fields of statistics and economics. Nevertheless, the topics and coverage do reflect choices about what is important to understand RM. Hence, the book’s purpose is to provide a comprehensive, accessible synthesis of the state of the art in Revenue Management.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not a practical book.......2007-09-24

This is certainly a complete theoretical book on revenue management.
But for somebody like me who works on a revenue management system in a car rental company, it is not useful and can lead on the contrary to an overly complicated and impossible to implement system.
In any field there is always the theory and how people adapt it to real world cases and there is often a gap between the two.
There should be another book that shows the complete process (relatively simple cases should be good enough) of building a revenue management system starting from strictly real cases as related by the client, relating in particular the cost of the process and the benefit of the implementation as expressed by the client.
But does the authors have the experience necessary to the writing of such a book?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-07-13

This is first book about Revenue Management that do no try to teach a "cake receipt" or to "adapt" RM from Airlines to Hotels. It's not a manual, it is scientific text that, above all, show the mathematics behind the RM policy. A must have to hotel managers!

5 out of 5 stars A long-awaited, state-of-the-art summary of knowledge.......2004-08-23

The area of Revenue Management (sometimes called yield management) has been developing rapidly over the past decade. All major airlines, car rental companies and hotel chains currently employ Revenue Management systems and profitability of these systems is well documented. Books describing basic concepts of Revenue Management appeared long time ago (see Cross, "Revenue Management: Hard-core Tactics for Profit-making and Market Domination"). Yet, there was no single place to look for the theory behind Revenue Management systems. This long-awaited book represents a concise and up-to-date source of academic knowledge on the theory of Revenue Management as well as implementation aspects. It is a perfect reference for graduate students in Operations Research and for others interested in learning about state of the art in this area.

Book Description

Corporate Finance: Theory and Practice covers the theory and practice of Corporate Finance from a truly European perspective.  It shows how to use financial theory to solve practical problems and is written for students of corporate finance and financial analysis and practising corporate financiers.  Corporate Finance is split into four sections and covers the basics of financial analysis; the basic theoretical knowledge that you will need to value a firm; the major types of financial securities: equity, debt & options and finally financial management which shows you how to organise a company’s equity capital, buying and selling companies, M&A, bankruptcy and cash flow management.

 Key features include:

"Impressive book for finance professionals - Probably the best recently published Corporate Finance book with a truly European emphasis. The balance between theory and practice makes this book an excellent tool for Investment Bankers and other finance professionals, as it covers both basic as well as more sophisticated topics. Particularly impressive is their commitment to continuously updating material, as well as the regular publication of a newsletter containing timely articles on various current finance topics. The possibility of asking questions to the authors and effectively receiving in-depth answers for free is a very valuable feature. I sincerely recommend this text." Amazon.co.uk 31 October 2005

"An excellent book for all business students - For a few months already, the Vernimmen.com website had been helping me for my finance class, as well as the monthly newsletter. I finally bought the book, and I have not been disappointed: the style is clear, very practical ; theories are mixed with real cases, which makes them easy to understand. Valuation techniques are well explained (discounted cash flow methods, methods based on ratios). Fundamental concepts (accounting, finance, financial markets) are recalled in the first part; when more complex concepts are tackled (investment analysis, LBOs, capital structure...), they are explained with lots of simplicity and conciseness.
I recommend this book for every student in Management or Finance!"

4 out of 5 stars Written From a Different Perpective.......2007-06-27

I have only read a few chapters on this book thus far, be cautious that this book is written from a European perspective (not stated anywhere on the advertising page. I won't dismiss this book immediately because it's written from a European perspective, however if you are looking to learn more about the US system, this may not be the book for you. I will definitely recommend it to those who know their basics very well in the world of accounting and finance and are looking to bridge together their understanding of the both continents. Most of the principles are the same regardless where you live, just be cautious of some items, such as your cash GL account not being the first item under current assets but rather the last.

5 out of 5 stars A corporate finance .......2005-11-21

The book's called "Corporate Finance - Theory and Practice" and it is, in my view, an excellent work for practitioners in the field. Unlike the other great tomes on the subject, it provides them with full explanations of the techniques involved, real time updates in a world of finance that is constantly changing, and an accounting environment undergoing a radical overhaul with the introduction of the new IFRS.

Comments that the book fails to provide an in-depth analysis of the Modigliani and Miller's propositions and of portfolio theory don't even bear mentioning. Criticising it for its weakness in capital budgeting using the real options method or the scenario analysis and Monte Carlo simulation is laughable from the point of view of the practitioner. In fact, the whole market agrees that these methods are very difficult to put into practice.

The real options method, for example, is only applicable in two or three clearly identified sectors (and is no substitute for traditional methods) given the difficulties involved in determining its parameters for a real asset. Stating that the volatility of a real project can be calculated simply by historical regression of the same series of data used for calculating the parameters of the cost of capital, is not credible for at least two reasons: i) the volatility of an asset is of course linked to its beta (and obviously not to market risk premium), but is not equal to it as it does not integrate the elements of risk specific to the asset and the volatility of a real asset cannot accordingly be approximated by the average volatility of companies in the sector, ii) only a prospective approach is recognised by the market today, and a historical estimation cannot be defended. Similarly, estimating the convenience yield for a real asset, a fundamental parameter for the real options method, is far from easy and is clearly not based on the same data as those used for calculating the cost of capital. The sensitivity of the method to its intrinsic parameters could easily lead to an over-valuation of the underlying real asset compared with a valuation carried out using the DCF method, which, despite its shortcomings, remains the only method that is universally used/recognised by the market.

In conclusion, I found this to be a very comprehensive work which will fully meet the expectations of practitioners, especially when combined with the regular updates on its website ([...]) considered to be one of the best in the world by www.financeprofessor.com, and its monthly newsletter, in the constantly changing world of finance.

5 out of 5 stars A great textbook!.......2005-10-27

What a great book!

The book, newsletter, and website are all very interesting and useful. The book is 48 chapters (about 1000 pages) full of corporate finance. I have to agree with the authors "It is a book in which theory and practice are constantly set off against each other...."

I really like it. Especially the emphasis not so much on techniques ("which tend to shift and change over time.")

Moreover, the authors also put out a monthly newsletter and have a web site that could stand alone as one of the best in the business.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing text.......2005-09-21

This text is too weak at least in important topics like capital budgeting (risk analysis and real options, mainly), MM propositions and portfolio theory.
The part on "scenario analysis and Monte Carlo simulation" took less than two pages, but the authors made a recommendation that is a big mistake: "the Monte Carlo Simulation should discount cash flows at the risk-free rate" to calculate the NPV distribution. This is true only if the cash-flows were simulated with risk-neutral stochastic process (i.e., processes with drift penalized by a risk-premium), but the book was referring to "real probability" simulations, so that the book statement is a mistake.
Other example, the infantile critique on real options (p. 814): they associated real options (RO) with the internet bubble in 2000, and that RO explained that very high values. Of course RO adds the flexibility value to NPV, but the serious RO literature never supported that bubble. The perhaps best known RO article on internet firm valuation (on Amazon.com value) was Schwartz & Moon (Financial Analyst Journal, May/June 2000): using RO they estimated a price equal to $12.42, whereas the "bubble" stock market price (in 1999) was $76.125, a big difference... (see also Hull, 6th ed., p. 718).
Other RO critique that I don't agree is: "estimating ... volatility, opportunity costs, etc., can be complicated". Apparently, the authors don't know that if you have data to estimate the risk-premium for the discount rate (using CAPM concepts, for example), you can use the SAME time series to estimate volatility. The popular approach to estimate this volatility is just a simple linear regression. In short, if the market is complete enough to calculate the traditional NPV, so is for RO valuation.
There are much better textbooks available. The traditional Brealey & Myers' textbook remains an excellent choice, mainly for capital budgeting topics.
Other good textbook alternatives are Ross et al (mainly for financial decisions, agency, etc.), Grinblatt & Titman (great in risk management), Bodie & Merton (introductory) and Benninga (Financial Modeling, a practical and correct book).

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Benchmarks.......2000-03-14

For those organizations which seek to establish and then sustain programs which optimize the talents of the women whom they employ, this is an immensely informative book. Of even greater value than the information provided are the specific suggestions it offers based on three decades of research on all manner of companies. Catalyst is a non-profit organization which "partners with U.S. corporations and professional firms that understand the critical power of women at work, that know that women's advancement is not a feel-good or even a do-good issue but a bottom-line practicality."

The Catalyst Award is given to those corporations which have achieved lasting, measurable results in this area. The book examines many of these corporations. For example: IBM, Avon Products, E.I. du Pont de Nemours, Eastman Kodak, Arthur Andersen, Motorola, American Airlines, Morrison & Foerster, McDonald's, J.C. Penney, Dow Chemical, Knight-Ridder, Texas Instruments, and Allstate. I hasten to point out that most (if not all) of the information and suggestions provided by the book are also relevant to small-to-midsize organizations and may indeed be of even greater value to them than to (let's say) "Fortune 100" companies.

Advancing Women in Business is divided as follows:

    Part I. Changing the System

    Part II. Best Practices

Part III. Resources: The Catalyst Award

"The Catalyst Approach" can maximize the value of a workforce by "capitalizing on the talents of women" only if all efforts are made within an "inclusive, problem-solving, comprehensive program." Specifically, first establish a strong foundation by connecting each initiative explicitly to a business rationale; next, build a fact base by gathering information that will create the baselines for evaluating each initiative's progress; finally, develop, pilot, and implement action plans whose initiatives achieve practical solutions tailored to the organization's environment. How? Several dozen corporations are examined which illustrate what the "Catalyst Approach" requires of those involved in its implementation. Specific strategies and tactics are discussed. Results are measured and evaluated. I rate this book so highly because I think it is very well written, because it provides a wealth of important information about "best practices from the corporate leaders", and because it includes a number of practical suggestions as to HOW to derive greatest benefit from that information. By now, frankly, I had hoped that a gender-specific book such as this would be unnecessary in the year 2000. Well, unfortunately, it is. I now hope that enough people buy it and enough organizations are guided by it so that one day very soon, my granddaughters read it and then ask me "What's this all about? Was it really like that? That's ridiculous!" Yes it is.

    5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Benchmarks.......2000-03-06

    Part II. Best Practices

4 out of 5 stars INTERESTING TOUR DE FORCE OF BEST PRACTICES........1999-04-23

The book begins with a three phase approach for advancing women that is basic to all successful initiatives. It explores some of the best practices of corporations to provide advice on women's advancement issues. It also briefly highlights the programs of numerous Catalyst award winners. The book is based on Catalyst's research reports, case histories, and best practices. This is an interesting tour de force of best practices. Book Description

This bestseller offers a complete introduction to financial management and corporate finance modules for a one-year university course. It is a relatively non-mathematical text and its simple explanations of a complex area have made it extremely popular with students. The author's educational and training expertise is reflected at every stage of the book: worked examples are given after each explanation, followed by a chapter summary, `quickie' questions and more detailed practice questions. The `quickie' questions are all answered at the back of the book and the accompanying teacher's manual contains answers to all the remaining questions.
