Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors
ASIN: 0471644307 |
Book Description
Strategic market planning in technology-intensive businesses is more complex and is less manageable than in most other organizations. The technology-driven business environment is intensely competitive, complex, and dynamic, and planning needs to be done quickly and often.
Winning Market Leadership offers a refreshing new approach to strategic market planning in these very demanding technology-intensive markets. It provides a systematic and highly integrated process for evaluating market opportunities and for developing strategies to lead in chosen markets. Its proven, highly practical approach to strategic market planning has allowed leading companies worldwide to: plan faster, focus on cash-flow and profitability, create "living plans" that reflect changing market conditions and competitive dynamics, involve cross-functional teams effectively, and drive to "yes/no" decisions. The book resulted from project-based executive programs developed by the authors for corporate clients such as IBM, Nortel Networks, National Semiconductor, and General Electric. This strategic market planning process has been refined and tested with over a thousand managers and executives in North America, Europe, and Asia. Winning Market Leadership:
- Is targeted at managers in technology-intensive businesses such as computers, telecommunications, software, biotechnology, semiconductors, instruments, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials.
- Focuses on the key issues and tough choices faced by executives in very demanding technology-intensive markets.
- Outlines a clear 10-step process for building winning market plans, including: identifying opportunities, understanding the competition, managing critical relationships, understanding the profit dynamic, and more.
- Features examples from high-tech companies such as Intel, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Glaxo Wellcome, and General Electric.
- Includes "Key Questions for Executives and Managers" at the end of each chapter that help eliminate "blind spots" in the planning process.
Winning Market Leadership is relevant to all executives and managers who play a significant role in developing cross-functional strategic market plans for their business: general managers; marketing managers; strategic planners; managers in business development, engineering, and R&D; and project team leaders.

Customer Reviews:
Great Textbook.......2006-09-13
I had to purchase this book for a masters levels class, and was initially shocked at how expensive it was. Don't let the price tag put you off - this is the most comprehensive textbook on Information Technology I've come across in a long time.
It is very well presented, with lots of diagrams / photos to support the text. It also documents modern organizations to give it more of a 'real' feel.
Needless to say, I have decided not to see this one back; that should be reason enough for you to believe that I think it's good!
A Creative Approach But Some "Tweaking" Needed.......2006-03-01
Business Driven Technology by Haag, Baltzan, and Phillips is quite a new textbook (1st edition in 2005) designed for undergraduate Information Systems courses. I am one of the "lead customers" of this textbook and have been using it for two semesters.
Contrary to traditional textbooks, it is a modular textbook. More specifically, the entire textbook is divided into three modules. The first module, Chapters, covers the topics in general. The second module, Business Plug-ins, gives more in-depth insights into the applications of Information Systems concepts to contemporary business environments. Finally, the last module, Technical Plug-ins, offers detailed technical information about the Information Systems tools covered in the first two modules. This modular approach is especially important for instructors today because they desperately seek undergraduate textbooks that include well-defined chapters. Moreover, the time necessary to cover all the topics in Information Systems is quite limited--usually a semester. The modular approach is also useful because it can satisfy diverse needs of instructors: some may want to concentrate on more "soft" issues, such as strategic use of IT or e-commerce, and some want to cover more "hard" topics such as telecommunications.
On the flip side, the book has some flaws that need to be urgently addressed before its second version hits the market. Apart from some minor editorial mistakes and unnecessary repetitions throughout the book, the case study questions at the end of each chapter should be rewritten. These case studies indeed reflect the main points from the chapters but the questions are either too general to discuss in class with students, or they are too simple to draw some conclusions. I am not requesting writing state-of-the-art questions but it will be a good idea to revisit them, and try to find a balance between simplicity and complexity.
Another concern is the scope of the textbook. Rather than trying to cover all Information Systems topics in a textbook, it may be better to focus on certain topics. In this regard, it may be necessary to remove the Plug-in T3 (Decision Analysis Tools in Excel), and T5 (Touring Access). Possibly due to space constraints, these parts of the book are not the best resource if an instructor wants to include some hands-on exercises in class. Especially, the Plug-in T5 has several errors, e.g., the first row in Figure T5.17 on page 456 is missing and it affects all the following figures in the plug-in. Given these concerns, instructors may adopt, for example, Shelly Cashman's Microsoft Access book for this purpose (at least until the 2nd version of the book).
A final concern is about the slides of the textbook. It is a common problem in all business textbooks is that the slides seem to be just copy-pasted from the main text of the book. This will probably force some instructors, like me, to rewrite them all and add considerable amount of information to them that is already in the textbook but not reflected in the slides! In this regard, rather than outsourcing the slide production to third-party editors, it will be much better if the authors themselves edit the slides (and it is an open invitation to all authors of business textbooks out there).
Overall, I definitely suggest adopting this textbook if your student profile is very diverse and you are looking for an introductory level Information Systems textbook that offers well-defined alternatives--there are not so many...

Buy this Book!.......2006-02-03
If you are looking to find a good book with examples, theorems and formulas about marketing data base promotion techniques, then buy this book it worth the money. I'd pay even more to have this book.
The authors show in detail how to segment your database using multiple formulas and techniques to reach each segment of your customers.
I encouradge anyone, students, professors or directors involved in the marketing business to buy this book.
Worth every dollar.......2003-04-17
As a consultant in the field of Database Marketing, the third edition of this book has rapidly found its place on my office shelf - a complex subject made easy through informative and well planned studies and examples.
I could not possibly remember all of this every time a client asks, but in one volume I have pretty much everything I need to know at my fingertips.
Whether you are a student, setting out on a career in direct marketing or a seasoned campaigner this book is an absolute must to get you up an running. It does not cover everything, and I suspect that some of the information on technologies and trends in the IT industry will soon be outdated, but you can always get that elsewhere!
The definitive book on direct marketing.......2002-05-04
Great for beginners and experts, this text gives excellent step by step instructions on every pertinent direct marketing concept. This is the only good "how-to" book that you will find on such a wide variety of topics.
Relevant Topics include: Setting up a marketing database & using statistics to predict response &segment customers!
A Reference Book with STep-By-Step How-To.......2000-12-09
This will be my reference book in this subject matter. It covers a lot of detail I'm convinced the authors have been collecting these nuggets since the first day they started working then poured it all out into this book. This is good and bad. It makes for a not-so-easy read. Some chapters almost just ramble this way and that. Wouldn't you rather a book err on too much detail than too little, though? I was very pleased though, that the book has many step-by-step how-tos. For example, what to include in a Functional Requirements doc, what to include in a system implmentation design doc. Fifteen steps of putting a Marketing Contact Program in place. This book is not an easy read. The chapters are written by different authors so you get a variety of styles, depth, rambling-ness. If you ever have the opportunity to hear THE David Shepard speak, don't miss it. I heard him give a 3-hour session at NCDM in Orlando this month. He is funny, engaging, delivers clearly and articulately and I learned a lot!
An Absolute book for any Marketer's Arsenal.......2000-06-28
This book has it all! With insight into both traditional & direct marketing, Sheppard & Associates drill into all aspects of database marketing: Marketing,Client/Server Technology, Statistics, Research, and so on! I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning about direct marketing & database marketing. But make sure you have some time on your hands. It's not an easy read. In fact, you may want to first view the table of contents & decide what areas you would benefit from reading first. Then, read it again. People will think you have returned back to school by the book's size & weight! This book is on my shelf as one of the best "reference" tools to date. I catch myself referring back to it once a month.

Design for Six Sigma in Technology and Product Development

Book Description
Wouldn't it be great if you could design a product with the customer in mind - right from the very start? Well, now there's a way: Quality Function Development, or QFD, translates the needs of the consumer directly into the design and development of new products and services. By focusing on customer needs and incorporating them into every phase of the manufacturing process, it eliminates waste and improves customer satisfaction. And that means increased sales, greater profits, and a bigger share of the market. Step-by-Step QFD is a practical, hands-on guide to implementing QFD at any organization. Written by an expert in the field, it shoes how the intensive study of consumer needs can be used to help you dramatically outperform the competition. In fact, the strategies outlined in this book have already met with great success at a number of corporations both within and outside of the United States. This workbook includes a case study of QFD in action, 34 helpful workshops, and an analysis of the synergy between QFD, TRIZ, and Taguchi. So whether you're a QFD trainer, project manager, design engineer, or manufacturer, Step-by-Step QFD will show you how to let one voice drive your entire design process - the customer's!
Customer Reviews:
Badly written.......2001-06-05
This book is not very well written. It jumps from one detailed description to another, without giving enough overview or bridging material. It seems like this book evolved from presentation slides, and the author failed to include enough of the bridging, higher-level exposition that keeps people oriented from slide to slide. This is a little disappointing, and it makes it more difficult to get value from this book.
Good examples...not well written.......2001-05-19
This book provides a nice overview of QFD with more than adequate examples. One of the nicer things is that it provides Workshop forms from which you can begin putting together a training forum. However, where this book fails is in the original authorship and editing. To be honest, it must be one of the most poorly put-together books I have read. Incorrect spellings, incomplete thoughts, and figure-to-text mismatches makes this book all but un-readable. If you need a book filled with examples at a decent rate, this is the one for you. If you can, skip this train and spend your money more wisely on a book that the author and publisher obviously took more time than a weekend to put together.
Well written book about a valuable technique.......2001-03-29
I stumbled into QFD by accident: while browsing through sample drawings in Visio I spotted a "House of Quality Matrix" under Business Diagrams. The drawing looked fascinating, which led me to do a quick search on the Internet. The search yielded a large number of hits and interesting content. That, in turn, led me to this book because capturing and validating requirements is a difficult undertaking and I am always on the lookout for new techniques and tools.
The book opened a whole new world to me. The opening chapter, "The Role of the Customer in Design", starts with an example of using QFD in a project and gives compelling reasons for using this technique. Subsequent chapters walk you through the mechanics of a generic design process. This prepares you for the detailed treatment of QFD that follows.
Based on my initial research QFD looks simple and straightforward. However, this book reveals a rich process and set of procedures that show its real power (and complexity for large undertakings). For example, I discovered that the "house of quality" structure can have multiple matrices, each of which is linked. This gives both forward and backwards traceability, but requires painstaking attention to detail. This is where this book proves its value - it breaks this complexity down into manageable pieces and provides you with a thorough understanding of the process.
The section that I found most meaningful and valuable addresses customer segments. I am an IT consultant who specializes in service delivery, so my natural focus is on strengthening alignment between IT and the business processes that IT supports. Among the things I learned from this section are: how to effectively identify customer segments and classify them, what measurements are meaningful (especially important for satisfaction measurement), and ranking and prioritizing. One of the most powerful prioritization techniques that I discovered in this book is the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). This technique is an excellent way to objectively quantify priorities and requirements. The steps are relatively simple: 1.Choose the requirements to be prioritized. 2.Set the requirements into the rows and columns of the n x n AHP matrix. 3.Perform a pair wise comparison of the requirements in the matrix according to a set criteria. 4.Sum the columns. 5.Normalize the sum of rows. 6.Calculate the row averages.
However, for a large number of requirements this can quickly get complicated in a hurry. The simple math for small numbers of requirements gets replaced by sophisticated (to me) matrix techniques that are outside of my skill set when the number of requirements to be prioritized grows. Also, AHP is useful for managing requirements revealed via surveys. Most of my requirements come directly from contact with end users. I have found that a facilitated meeting using paired comparison techniques to be as valuable aas AHP. This is not covered in the book, which I found to be a minor shortcoming. If you want details about paired comparisons I will be happy to share them via email.
The rest of the book addresses QFD within the context of quality planning and management, and measuring the effectiveness of quality. Interwoven into these are valuable tools and techniques, such as affinity diagrams, TRIZ and various analysis techniques. While the remainder of the book began focusing on manufacturing, which is outside of my professional specialty, I found the material interesting because some of my clients are manufacturers and it gave insights into business processes that will surely prove valuable in the future. Almost everything in this book was new to me. The author did a magnificent job of explaining how to effectively capture, prioritize and management requirements in ways that I never expected. Moreover, the methods embodied in QFD are both powerful in that you can actually capture the voice of the customer, and practical in that you can trace a final design (product or process) back to customer requirements. I also learned about some powerful techniques, such as AHP, that I would have never discovered had I not read this book. If you are involved in requirements management, product or process design or quality then this book will be a valuable addition to your professional reading.
Overall Excellent Introduction to QFD, Good First QFD Book.......1999-10-17
Great book for persons just starting QFD within their organizations. Straight forward step-by-step chapters that build upon each other to arrive at a comprehensive understanding of QFD concepts and mechanics. Team/group excercises within each chapter make this a great introductory training manual to solidify learning of material covered in each chapter.
Our Branch Office Will Get One Too.......1998-01-28
I appreciate the way the author communicates. His style is as simple as QFD, but QFD wouldn't have been simple for me without the book.

Book Description
With the current changes driven by the expansion of the World Wide Web, this book uses a different approach from other books on the market: it applies ontologies to electronically available information to improve the quality of knowledge management in large and distributed organizations. Ontologies are formal theories supporting knowledge sharing and reuse. They can be used to explicitly represent semantics of semi-structured information. These enable sophisticated automatic support for acquiring, maintaining and accessing information. Methodology and tools are developed for intelligent access to large volumes of semi-structured and textual information sources in intra- and extra-, and internet-based environments to employ the full power of ontologies in supporting knowledge management from the information client perspective and the information provider.
The aim of the book is to support efficient and effective knowledge management and focuses on weakly-structured online information sources. It is aimed primarily at researchers in the area of knowledge management and information retrieval and will also be a useful reference for students in computer science at the postgraduate level and for business managers who are aiming to increase the corporations information infrastructure.
The Semantic Web is a very important initiative affecting the future of the WWW that is currently generating huge interest. The book covers several highly significant contributions to the semantic web research effort, including a new language for defining ontologies, several novel software tools and a coherent methodology for the application of the tools for business advantage. It also provides 3 case studies which give examples of the real benefits to be derived from the adoption of semantic-web based ontologies in "real world" situations. As such, the book is an excellent mixture of theory, tools and applications in an important area of WWW research.
- Provides guidelines for introducing knowledge management concepts and tools into enterprises, to help knowledge providers present their knowledge efficiently and effectively.
- Introduces an intelligent search tool that supports users in accessing information and a tool environment for maintenance, conversion and acquisition of information sources.
- Discusses three large case studies which will help to develop the technology according to the actual needs of large and or virtual organisations and will provide a testbed for evaluating tools and methods.
The book is aimed at people with at least a good understanding of existing WWW technology and some level of technical understanding of the underpinning technologies (XML/RDF). It will be of interest to graduate students, academic and industrial researchers in the field, and the many industrial personnel who are tracking WWW technology developments in order to understand the business implications. It could also be used to support undergraduate courses in the area but is not itself an introductory text.

Also describes information visualisation and knowledge sharing tools. Describes a state-of-the-art system for storage and retrieval of metadata expressed in RDF and RDF Schema. Also discusses a system for automatic metadata extraction. Examines three significant case studies providing examples of the real benefits to be derived from the adoption of semantic-web based ontologies in ""real world"" situations.
Customer Reviews:
speculative but exciting.......2006-02-04
Davies et al take us on a tour of a possible future Web. A very ambitious project, whose remit is to enable a far more automated knowledge processing of web pages. Various ontologies and schemas are proposed. Notably the RDF schema.
Overall, there is no dispute in the book that XML will be used as the default low level representation. It is the higher level issues that are cloudier. Much harder to evaluate. Like how to evolve a given ontology and how to couple this to a reasoning software package.
The book also finds time to look briefly at involving a peer-to-peer method for aiding knowledge management and for building ontologies. A so-called Knowledge Grid is proposed. Speculative but exciting.
A Presentation of Tools.......2004-11-12
This is a book about what has Ontoprise(in other words Karlsruhe Uni.) done in asocciation with Innsbruk and Amsterdam (and probably Manchester I cannot recall) for the development of software tools about the semantic web. That's why the title of the book has the word "Towards" before "Semantic Web" and it is not just called "The Semantic Web". It talks very little about the Semantic Web, Ontologies and the problems that we face in the realization of these concepts and is limited to just introducing some concepts without defining and explaining them in detail.
The only pesron that this book might seem usefull is someone who is prety aware of the semantic web and ontology technologies and wants to find more information about the way the way some problems are dealt in software.
Just a compilation of papers.......2004-09-11
This books is nothing but just a compilation of papers persented by various researchers. You can just look at the table of contents of this book, search the paper on the internet and download it. Don't see the point in buying this book.
Semantic futures.......2003-07-28
This book comprises a comprehensive overview of the application of semantic web technologies to knowledge management. The first few chapters discuss theoretical underpinnings before moving on to knowledge management tools that can exploit semantically-annotated information. A methodology is also described for the introduction of these technologies into an organisation, along with a couple of case studies. As such, it is one of the first books describing a whole-hearted attempt to apply semantic web technology to an important industrial/commercial area.
The book is not primarily an introductory text and is for people who already have at least an understanding of existing WWW technology and probably of XML and RDF. As such, I believe that its main appeal will be to graduate students; researchers, developers and technologists in industry; and the academic community. For this readership, this is an excellent text describing some ground-breaking research in the field, and giving pointers to the future research agenda.

Model-Driven Software Development

Book Description
Model Driven Architecture (MDA) is a new approach to software development that helps companies manage large, complex software projects and save development costs while allowing new technologies that come along to be readily incorporated. Although it is based on many long-standing industry precepts and best practices, such as UML, it is enough of a departure from traditional IT approaches to require some "proof of the pudding."
Real-Life MDA is composed of six case studies of real companies using MDA that will furnish that proof. The authors' approach MDA projects by describing all aspects of the project from the viewpoint of the end-usersfrom the reason for choosing an MDA approach to the results and benefits. The case studies are preceded by an introductory chapter and are followed by a wrap-up chapter summarizing lessons learned.
* Written for executives, analysts, architects, and engineers positioned to influence business-oriented software development at the highest levels.
* Filled with concrete examples and analyses of how MDA is relevant for organizations of various sizes.
* Considers a range of uses for MDAfrom business process analysis to full-scale software modeling and development.
* Presents results for each case study in terms of tangible, measured benefits, including automatically generated code, defect reduction, improved visibility, and ROI.
Customer Reviews:
Clearly illustrates the broad application of MDA.......2007-05-18
One of the problems with something like architecture is that it's difficult to quantify the value. This is even more difficult when the approach can be applied in many different ways, in many different circumstances. This is certainly the case for MDA. Perhaps the best we can do is point to examples of how it is used, where it's been successful, and what value it has contributed. Well, if you want to answer those questions for MDA, this book is for you.
Real-life MDA, as the title suggests, is basically a book of case studies. Each case has a similar structure describing the problem being addressed, why an MDA approach was chosen, the goals, the challenges faced, how MDA was used, what processes and tools were used, the results and benefits, and the client's assessment of the MDA experience. But that's where the similarity ends. One case show MDA in an Agile environment, another highlights MDA and code generation, another shows how MDA is used to create Enterprise Architecture, yet another shows an MDA approach to outsourcing. This illustrates the variety of MDA approaches, while providing a framework to understand and compare the different examples.
I should of course mention that the book is easy to read, in spite of the non-trivial nature of the subject. Both Guttman and Parodi are excellent writers who keep the flow interesting and insightful. If you've thought MDA sounded good, but couldn't articulate the value, now you'll be able to. If you never quite bought the idea of MDA, hopefully this book will change your mind. In either case, you'll enjoy the read and learn something in the process.
Excellent MDA Overview then straight to real MDA Projects.......2007-05-17
We all know that there's a relationship between technology and history. Some argue that technology determines history (in terms of its shaping of economic, social, and political institutions). Others are concerned that we're not ready for really new technology at this point in history. The authors of this very well written book have used history and technology to locate MDA in a similar historical process (the development of mechanical technology - assembly line, components, machine tools, etc.) - by doing this we can think about where MDA is, where it is going to, and most importantly, what it needs next.
Must read for real-life MDA prospects.......2007-04-21
I read this book skipping over technical and theoretical excerpts and focusing on the 'project experience' part of every case study. This book confirms to me that MDA is finding its way into IT reality, graduating the approach from what's probable to what's possible, from phenomenon to ontic. The format, style, and presentation are excellent, and some of the case studies are captivating narratives that I learned quite a bit from. For me, this book is about what is workable more so than what is viable.
The nebulous aspect of "what is really MDA" is not clarified in this book, rather it is confirmed because you will see that each case study presents a project using some form of MDA, and they are all different.
So who do I recommend this book to? First, let's recognize that this book is fist-in-class, so it cannot be compared to others --the OMG has had MDA case studies posted on their Website for a while, but not with this substance.
If you are curious regarding what MDA is about, surprisingly, this book offers a great introduction by way of analogy to manufacturing -- I found the analogy very powerful. And browsing the case studies can paint a picture as to what the MDA experience entails.
If you are flirting with MDA, you might find the case studies compelling and perhaps start thinking about your first MDA pilot project.
If you are part of an MDA (or any model driven whatever) project, this book is mostly for you -- without meaning to preclude the first two.
Good examples well presented but not compelling for MDA in general.......2007-04-05
The book talks about MDA (Model Driven Architecture) not from a theoretical point of view but using 7 case studies where MDA was used successfully. I liked the idea of the format and it was certainly more compelling to read about real projects and tools than another discussion of the general benefits and approaches.
If you are thinking about MDA and like the idea of the approach then this book will give you some concrete examples to reference and to use to persuade others. I felt, however, that many of the stories were more about moving from very old-fashioned approaches to a more current approach and that most of the benefits could have been gained without labeling it MDA.
For those of you who read The Halo Effect: ... and the Eight Other Business Delusions That Deceive Managers you might be thinking "where are the comparisons to MDA projects that didn't work". I though that too and think it would have made a stronger book to present both sides. In the end the book is not compelling for someone who has not decided to adopt MDA or who considers MDA just another Computer Aided Software Engineering or CASE tool. It might be a useful tool for those who are already convinced about MDA who want examples and stories to share.
