Customer Reviews:
Very very technical.......2007-03-07
Having read reviews prior to purchasing the book, I thought, it can't be that bad. I was wrong. All of the reviews are accurate and true descriptions of the book. I purchased the book as required text for a graduate introductory course in data communications. What can you do if you're stuck with this book and you must read it " for class"? Read the summary at the end of each chapter FIRST. This might help you grasp what the author is trying to say in a long, extended, technical and scientific way.
The book includes scientific descriptions of data communication. Perhaps the book is extremely on point for engineering students or someone with interest in creating a data communications or telecommunications system from scratch for an organization. However, addressing the issues from a business perspective is not the primary focus of the book. Reading the chapter demands utmost concentration and the ability to extract key concepts about the subject under discussion. It is not clear why this book seems to pop up so often as the required text. There are many books that address data communications from a business perspective. It is an arcane academic selection as required text for a non-engineering data communications course.
Priceless - or should be.......2005-12-14
I am completing my MSIS degree. I was required to use this textbook for one of my classes. I felt the book was possibly appropriate for an engineering computer science program on a "how things work" level but a terrible waste of time for business students. If I want to buy a cell phone I don't care HOW the cell phone works. I only care that it DOES work, and that it is dependable, accurate, reliable, and cost effective. Stop putting the OSI model in these textbooks. Just teach TCP/IP because that's what is used. If you're going to put problems at the end of the chapters, provide solutions to the students. Otherwise, you're just wasting paper because nobody will ever use them. Why work on them if you don't have a solution to compare your answers to? I have spoken to nearly half the people in my class. All agree. This textbook was a terrible choice for our class in the business program. None of us feel we learned anything of value from studying from this book.
I sincerely hope our instructor and program director will find a different book to use for future classes.
Business Data Communications.......2005-10-04
This book arrived in a timely manner and in excellent condition. I would purchase fromthis seller again.
Not an Appropriate Introductory Textbook.......2004-08-26
A course I took earlier this year used this textbook, and I wasn't too fond of it. The book's explanations were very clinical, and other reviewers are correct in observing that it has many typographical errors (which are very frustrating when trying to solve mathematically inclined equations).
The professor deviated substantially from the text, supplying us with several real-world examples and more on the theory behind the examples given in the book. If he had not done that, I do not think I would have been able to learn the material from the book alone. Many of its explanations are too brief and lack depth or supporting examples.
If you are teaching an information systems course and intend to use this textbook, be prepared to supplement it with substantial cases or lose the interest and comprehension of your students.
Good Book for CIS Majors.......2004-07-02
I bought this book for an online course on Network Communications which I took as a Computer Science major. This book is riddled with technical information and looks at things from an 'implementation cost' perspective (the case studies at the end of almost every chapter are good examples of this) which is good for Computer Information Systems (CIS) majors since they tend to focus more on the business aspect of the 'field'.
The majority of the chapters are easy reading (if you like reading technical info.). I found some of the problems at the end of some chapters to be quite challenging (which was a treat being the geek that I am). I've also used this book as reference for TCP/IP when doing low-level network programming.
Conclusion: if you're a CIS major or a business major focusing on IT, then I recommend this book for you.

Customer Reviews:
Terrible Book.......2005-01-22
This book is awful. The revisions to it are updated, but to follow the book in order is nearly impossible. This is a text book being used at a college. The information in this book is scattered and makes learning the concepts difficult. I do not recommend this book for use at colleges/universities. There has to be another book out there that allows users to learn the concepts and terminology in an easier fashion.
Six Stars!.......2004-03-03
I've recently completed a course using this textbook. Excellent!!! It has been a long time (if ever) since I have actually enjoyed reading a textbook. I feel it should be mandatory reading for all authors and potential authors who will ever feel the need to publish a textbook for undergraduate level work in a technical field.
Most of the many corrections on the online corrections page are minor and insignificant (i.e. typos) and would probably go unnoticed by the reader. With press deadlines in technologies being what they are, it is fully understandable. The choice to include those corrections (a) gave me a sense of security in that it demonstrated the author's thoroughness and (b) proves that you don't have to cut a new edition of your work every six months (which can be quite annoying for anyone who is looking to get a specific edition for class).
I was pretty much convinced that it was impossible to design and publish a textbook in a technical field of a caliber such as this. In general, technical authors either confuse the reader by over complicating the layout and material or they put the reader to sleep by being overly shallow and overly redundant. This is not the case for this book. In the words of Goldilocks, this one is "just right". I strongly recommend it to anyone, whether they have a class requirement for it or not.
Great Book, using in my PSU networking class.......2003-03-02
This book is great, it starts from the beginning of the networking age and goes through all the newest technologies and ideas about networking. Covers the business aspects of networking, wireless, how TCP/IP works and pretty muct the 802 standars. Book covers everything, this is one book I won't be selling back. A really good reference book for the basics of networking and rules to follow as well when getting into the networking field.
Great Book, but Check Author's Web Site for Corrections.......2002-12-24
I just finished a semester with this book. Loved it! I didn't think I'd every say that about a textbook, but this one really makes it easy to remember the material. It does so by quizzing you at the end of every section instead of just waiting until the end of the chapter. I found that it significantly improved my retention rate.
I will however caution you that there are errors present in many of the chapters. The errors I came across looked like they were mainly due to poor editing and validation of the technical material. I STRONGLY recommend that you go to the author's web site as he quickly posts any and all corrections by chapter.
For ... dollars, you'd think that the book's publisher, Prentice Hall, would have reviewed the book a bit more thoroughly before publication.
Errors aside, this is a great book that will mostly likely improve further with the next edition.

Great Overview of Data Communications.......2000-12-05
We used this book in my graduate MIS course, and it was a great tool for learning the basics about data communications and networking. Many of my classmates thought that Panko did a great job of explaining data comm concepts, whether it was something as simple as an ethernet LAN, or as complex as an ATM network. Everyone in my class seemed to enjoy the text (both highly technical students with a background in data comms, and students who were learning the material for the first time).
The book is designed to give readers a general overview of a subject, then drill down into the details in later chapters. He starts with the basics (layers, encapsulation, protocols, etc), and then gets into how networks are built from the ground up. Panko has included numerous modules at the end of the book if you want to learn even more about a specific topic.
The author has also put together slides for each chapter which were very helpful in explaining difficult concepts, or emphasizing certain chapters in the text. If you can get a copy of them, I highly recommend using them.
I recommend this book for anyone looking for a way to learn a lot about data communications and networking. This book covers the gamut from LAN to WAN technology, packet switching, ATM networks, frames, IP addresses, etc. It can also serve as a tremendous reference if you need to review a topic later on down the road.

Good wireless programing book; ok treatment of other topics.......2001-10-06
"Wireless Internet & Mobile Business How to Program" contains a good discussion of the various elements of programming for wireless devices. The reader will come away from the programming chapters with a solid understanding of how to implement simple structures. The chapter that introduces algorithms is clear and concise; the chapter that introduces control structures is easy to understand (if somewhat odd in its ordering). The chapter that introduces Object Oriented Programming provides a clear introduction to objects. This approach, using several real-world examples, is a good way to orient the non OO-minded to the use of objects. It covers the different aspects of objects in the abstract well. However, it could use a clearer explanation of why developers should use objects instead of the regular, top-down structured programming they've (possibly just) learned. For those new to programming, this is essential.
The book is not really just a "How to Program" manual, as are some of Deitel & Deitel's other similarly named texts. (Their excellent C++ and Java books come to mind.) Some of the chapters, like the one on employment opportunities, are in danger of becoming obsolete quickly. However, overall this is a solid text with good treatment of wireless programming and other loosely related topics.

Customer Reviews:
OBTUSE ESSAY OF NETWORKING ESSENTIALS.......2001-07-05
The compilation entitled "Implementing Cisco VPNs" was a rather disappointing choice of technical literature. A significant amount of text was devoted to development of PPTP services and related Microsoft networking concepts. Although this information may have value at some fundamental level, it really serves to deliver deminishing impact when constructing environments of highly scalable architecture and elevated security requirements. The chapter on Dial-up networking presented an anomaly with respect to concept flow. Information of greater value may be found free of charge on Cisco's website.
Better read this book or be left behind.......2001-03-25
A detailed and complete reference on on implementing Cisco VPNs. This book covers the whole gamit of implementing Cisco VPNs. Going from concepts through complete set-up and on to implementation and beyond. Excellent coverage on how to configure native Windows support for compulsory and voluntary VPNs--everyone's #1 priority - security. A complete and detailed table of contents and appendix make quick searches a breeze. This book is chock full of technical setup procedures and protocol. A very complete book on how to configure IPSEC, L@TP, PPTP, GRE Tunnels, CET, and more. Read it or be left behind!

Customer Reviews:
It is out-of-date and unorganized........2006-11-05
The tone of this book is pretty coversational but unorganized. The information in this book is pretty much out of date. For example, this book still talk a lot of banner ad which is almost out of the scope in today's ad on web, while talking little or nothing about PPC. It brings out some good old metric but nothing new. The technolgy foundation of this book is old and weak and can not reflect and keep up with the current trends.
This book is not efficient in pointing out things. It could be more condensed. I don't think this is neccessary to tell the whole author's personal story and some other trivial things to explain things. YOu would just need to point out the definition, and how to apply it, and how to interepte it and etc.
This book just includes a lot of unncessary personal story and waste reader's time. If you need a book which is right to the point and nothing more, this book is not right for you.
Out of date .... not useful anymore.......2006-09-27
this books needs two things desparately:
a) A new edition: the last edition was in 2002 - things have changed quite a lot since then, and
b) More details on the technologies than interviews with one and sundry - books that just present interviews on who accomplished what are "let me feel nice about this technology" kind as opposed to "how do I really understand and implement this technology"
It's very practical.......2006-09-19
It's a very practical, very well informed book. The author quoted
thousands of reports.
Useful at large but confusing here and there.......2006-07-11
Even four years after its publishing date, I've found Sterne's book on Web Metrics helpful. For the most part, he's focused on business metrics applied to the web, which shields his work from obsolescence for the most part. However, when he gets into topics such as CRM and also in other places throughout the book, it feels as if he could have used a bit more editing, as he rambles and jumps between topics in a way that is more confusing than helpful. It deserves four stars, loosing one star over his occasional rambling.
Not Just For Corporations and Marketing Departments.......2005-01-25
Whether you're a small business owner, a corporate manager, or
someone just starting a business venture, Web Metrics is a must-
read. For small and new business entrepreneurs who cannot afford a marketing department, Web Metrics gives an inside look into how
experts in leading industries improve their online marketing
strategies.

Solid introduction to the technology and how to employ it.......2002-05-22
This book is not overly technical. It's written to provide a basic, but complete, introduction to mobile commerce from a business strategy point of view. It helps you answer some fundamental questions, such as:
Does mobile commerce make sense as a part of our business strategy?
What does it take to implement it?
What have other done to be successful?
From the above the most suitable audience consists of upper management on the business side, marketing and IT/IS management. Upper levels of business management who are exploring how to integrate mobile commerce into the value chain, or develop a strategy for competitive advantage that taps into the proliferation of mobile devices (cell phones and PDAs) are going to benefit most from the following chapters: (2) Partnerships-the way to Success in the Mobile Era and (4) Corporate Applications: Aligning Mobile Commerce with your Business Goals.
Marketing will get the most from chapters (3) Consumer Mobile Commerce-Mass Market Solutions with Segmentation and (6) Portals-A Single Plate for Various Dishes. Another book that will serve marketing well is "The Mobile Internet: How Japan Dialled up and the West Disconnected" by Jeffrey Lee Funk because it provides deep insights into marketing issues, as well as how Japan's NTT DoCoMo became an international success story.
Both business managers and marketing will also gain keen insights from the case studies and scenarios that are used throughout the book to illustrate key points and show how others have successfully employed m-commerce solutions for strategic advantage or as service offerings.
IT/IS management will get a high level overview of the technical underpinnings, issues and factors associated with developing, deploying and maintaining m-commerce systems. The technical details are not deep, but are sufficient to gain a rough understanding of the scope and complexity of implementing and supporting m-commerce enabled systems.
If you are seeking in-depth technical details you will be disappointed. However, if you are among the target audience or have the goals I cited above you'll find this book to be one of the best in its genre for introducing the business and strategic issues surrounding mobile commerce.

Best Pick.......2004-02-09
I read the third edition front to back. If the forth edition is anything like the third, you won't be disappointed.
Business Oriented.......2000-07-21
one of the best books in its field, gives details yet doesn't go deeper than what business students would like, its language is easy yet specific and use network jargons. in short, buy it.
local area network.......2000-07-02
i want to know more about local area networks
The book is focused on applying the material........1998-08-12
I just finished a course on data communications at a local college. Since I knew absolutely nothing about the topic. I had nowhere to go but up. Mr Goldman's book is very readable and is chock filled with charts, checkoff lists and such that I will use when I get into the IT field. His objective to get the reader to think in terms of applying the material rather than memorizing it. He suceeds. Does he have any other related works out there? I'll buy them.

Book Description
If your work involves the development and operation of voice or data networks, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is beginning to change the way you do business. Here's a ground-breaking book that quickly gives you a thorough understanding of this revolutionary protocol for IP Telephony. It shows how SIP provides a highly-scalable and cost-effective way to offer new and exciting telecommunication feature sets, helping you design your "next generation" network and develop new applications and software stacks.
Discussions include SIP as a key component in the Internet multimedia conferencing architecture, request and response messages, devices in a typical network, types of servers, SIP headers, comparisons with existing signaling protocols including H.323, related protocols SDP (Session Description Protocol) and RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol), and the future direction of SIP. Detailed call flow diagrams illustrate how this technology works with other protocols such as H.323 and ISUP.
Download Description

Best available primer on the subject.......2007-01-12
I'm not an engineer, but I've got a lot of telecom experience. The second edition of "SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol," delivers on the title. Engineers and programmers can look to the text as a good starting point, but will want to go the IETF for more serious stuff. Still, the text provides sample SIP messages and deconstructs SIP message flows. The non-technical reader can still understand the protocol and its uses, and make more informed business decisions (strategy, marketing, product management, finance or M&A). I evaluated all the other titles available from Amazon.com before purchasing and reading this one, and I am convinced this was the best selection available.
Very complete..........2007-01-09
Not a how to guide, but definitly a complete review of the SIP specification. It gives a complete description of the protocol to the point where you can actually implement the protocol.
This is reference book to keep (as opposed to some computer books that you can trash after a few years because they are no longer relevant).
This book will teach you enough about the SIP protocol so you will know how to position the protocol in your architecture, and start implementing!
good book.......2006-06-26
This book is very complet to understand SIP protocol. I found an answer for all my questions.

if you're developing with SIP, you need this book.......2005-09-26
I'm a working developer that recently became engaged in a J2EE project where needed to design and build a SIP server for a call center requiring all manner of specialized behaviors. Needless to say I needed to learn all about the ins and outs of SIP as this system would be SIP VoIP based.
I started out trying to use the various RFCs related to the SIP and SDP protocols. Well, I could spend an entire review about how miserable it is to trudge through typical RFC documentation. Online hyperlinked documentation is indeed in some respects a miracle of our modern cyber information age. Yet it's not exactly perfect. In many respects I maintain that the traditional book remains solidly the highest technological invention that mankind has yet conceived - especially now that I can compare book form information vs. its online hyperlinked and searchable alternative.
When it comes to learning and having ready access to the relevant information I'd take a book, such as "SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol" hands down vs the RFCs. I was making slow and painful progress yet once I had this book in hand, I could quickly whip around in it and cross reference the material presented in it by flipping pages, look for things via by scanning the table of contents, or dereferencing the index. Finally I started to rapidly accelerate my endeavor.
Besides the mechanics of accessing the relevant information, this book was also solidly presented by the author. He indeed has a authoritative command of the subject matter. Many of the scenarios he presents of how SIP is deployed and used were directly relevant to my particular project. It was particularly important to see the full dialog of SIP/SDP protocol exchange and the diagrams that accompanied this were very helpful. Nice visual diagrams of this manner are not to be found in the bland RFC material.
I came to amazon.com and read up on all the reviews posted for this title. Several of them gave the book a low rating. I sensed that what these people were after was a more digestible higher level presentation of the subject matter. There is an O'Reilly title on VoIP that I think might serve some of these folks better in that regard. However, this book on SIP also does a fair job of presenting SIP in light of some of the other VoIP related standards, etc. It's just that the main thrust of this book is to convey the technical understanding of SIP so that one can program systems based on it.
So if one is a software developer and needs to learn the technical ins and outs of SIP then this books is definitely the one to get. It beats using the RFCs by themselves by many leagues.

A Single source covering complete over view of IP Multicast.......1998-08-24
The style of writing is good and well paced. Is a good read for both beginners and as a reference source for serious developers. The transition from introduction to IP Multicast to discussion of advanced topics is smooth. Topics such as DVMR, etc are covered well with enough theoretical foundation. Over all a good book to get a hang of the basics of IP multicast.
