5 out of 5 stars Business and Its Environment (5th Edition).......2006-07-19

This book is an easy read. It has tons of useful information. I would recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars New Edition is Better.......2005-12-05

There is a new edition (the fifth) for this book, and it is better than the edition shown here. While avoiding a polemical view, Baron illustrates business ethical priciples with very poignant examples and stories. The case studies are very up to date and fun to read. More than that, though, the case studies can form a basis for classroom debate and discussion which not only brings the material to life but also promotes critical thinking and articulation among students.

I liked it very much, and recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars The book for dilettante readers.......2002-01-21

The author provided some good examples demonstrating a picture of business and its environment. People who have exposed to Industrial Organization (or at least some levels of application of game theory) will get bored of all arguments without mentioning anything about its quantitative aspect.

3 out of 5 stars The book for dilettante readers.......2002-01-21

The author provided some good examples to demonstrate some business's environments. The book is very readable. You will get bored if you have exposed to industrial organization or some applications of game theory.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Easy Reading.......1999-05-30

I've read a good chunk of this book during a B-school elective on non-market strategies, and found it imparted some valuable information. It's not very prescriptive if that's what you're looking for. But it made me feel like I got something out of the class despite an unstellar professor.

5 out of 5 stars FAST SHIPPING!!!.......2007-09-10

My textbook was in a great condition and when they said fast shipping, they meant FAST SHIPPING! I recommend this seller to everyone because they are excellent in providing the best service that I have ever encounter on the website. Thanks!!!

4 out of 5 stars Quite Comprehensive.......2006-03-17

This text offers great details, but I did not rate it as 5 stars because (1) when searching for content, it is difficult to see the key words in the text and (2) the case studies are well selected, but since they are inserted throughout the chapter, it is challenging to determine where the case ends and the author's content begins.

Overall, I would recommend the Jennings text and will keep a copy on my shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Good enough.......2005-09-12

The book was damaged but it looks like its the post office job because the envelope used to cover the book was damaged as well. Besides that, the transaction was good

1 out of 5 stars 15 days to tell us they didn't have the book........2004-11-16

I ordered the book from them on Nov1. On Nov 15 I called and they told me they didn't have it. The money was returned by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Overall, I recommend it........2001-09-04

This book was assigned to one of my MBA classes. The book itself was a good source of reference not only for my business law class but also to other two classes. The book's language is simple and easy to understand. The only flaw I found about this this book was that some cases were complex and I had to refer to actual law books and regulations. Overall, I recommend this book.

Book Description

Recognized and respected for both its inclusion of cutting edge material and for its strong strategic managerial approach, this is one of the most comprehensive and challenging, yet approachable and understandable legal environments texts on the market. It is equally suitable for students with substantial work experience as well as for those who are studying business for the first time. The text fully looks at the subject matter from the perspective of current and future business managers and leaders by providing an in-depth understanding of how law impacts daily management decisions and business strategies. Its integrated treatment of law and management presents a very strategic perspective, showing how the law provides ways for managers to minimize risk and create value, how to use the law to craft solutions to attain core business objectives, and how to spot legal issues before they become legal problems and effectively handle the inevitable legal disputes that arise in the course of doing business.

There are many better books out there that are easier to follow and comprehend if you are not a law student. Not impressive.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for Execs, Mgrs, Invest. Pros, Mgmt Consultant.......2000-08-13

For the benefit of all the people who cannot take her course, Prof. Connie Bagley has written this book that has the same title as her course (she teaches a quarter each at the Stanford and Harvard Business Schools). It is an extremely very well thought out and well written book. Throughout the book Prof. Bagley has kept in mind the reader's background and organized and written content in a way that will be of maximum benefit to the reader.

This book is one of the best investments that any person can make. While almost everyone will benefit from this book, I feel this book will be indispensable to the following readers: 1. Any person in a Business Administration/Management role, especially Executives and Managers in large corporations, Investment Professionals and Management Consultants. 2. Professionals associated with legal matters who want a refresher and a quick reference book that covers key aspects of all the important laws. 3. Any person who wants to gain a knowledge of the legal environment, especially the environment in which business is conducted.

Unlike a law book intended for specialist lawyers, this book is readable by people who are not lawyers. After reading this book or using it as a reference one can get a good understanding of the legal process (how the entire legal system works) and several important areas of law such as Contracts, Torts, Product Liability, Intellectual Property, Labor, Environmental, Antitrust, Real Estate, Consumer protection, Securities, and International Business. The legal topics discussed are on the leading edge of business regulation. They include the World Trade Organization, employer liability for sexual harassment, compensation and liability act, and HIV in the workplace.

In keeping with the Internet age, Prof. Bagley analyzes the implications of the Internet and Information Technology to several laws (such as copyright law in the cyberspace), and also gives several Internet sources for the reader to conduct further research.

It is remarkable that the book covers each of the topics perfectly to the extent required - nothing more and nothing less. The book has around 1050 pages and the time invested in each page is worth the rewards.

As Prof. Bagley says, the purpose of the book is to provide you a good understanding of the legal system, how the laws work, removal of any fear of laws, how to avoid legal mistakes, how to protect yourself, when to take what legal action and, most importantly, make you smart enough to know when to go to your lawyer. You cannot expect to practice law after reading this book but you definitely will know when to seek legal help, and how to communicate effectively with your legal advisors.

Prof. Bagley has also written another book "The Entrepreneur's Guide to Business Law". If only every entrepreneur read this book before starting out, the number of failures caused by legal blunders will be close to zero.

Both her books are extremely very well thought out and well written. I was fortunate to get into Prof. Connie Bagley's high demand "Managers and the Legal Environment" course at Stanford Graduate School of Business. The course is an absolute gem of a course. While this course is a high demand course, her other course "Legal Challenges in Entrepreneurship" is usually multiply over subscribed with around 150 students wanting to get into a class of 66! Prof. Bagley is a wonderful teacher and an amazing person. Her class was a wonderful learning experience for me and I thank her for that. I'm sure that after reading the book you too will thank her for having written this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great overview of main legal issues for managers.......1998-12-02

This book is amongst others used at the Stanford MBA course as an introduction to legal issues that may arise for managers in a variety of business situations. It is comprehensive and is well illustrated with landmark case studies and relevant hypotheticals. Constance Bagley takes out most of the cumbersome legalistic language and makes the complexities of US corporate and civil law understandable.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good for Business.......2007-03-09

The book is very clearly outlined and easy to read. It goes it depth without unnecessary information. The cases in the back are interesting and are supplemented with plenty of visuals.

4 out of 5 stars Used in MBA program.......2006-12-21

This book was used for my law and ethics class in my MBA program. The book is actually quite good in breaking down business topics and looking at the precedents that helped shape our current laws. The book is also good at applying the law to actual events such as the Enron scandal and other legal events in the past few years. While some people might say that it is a waste of time to read this book because you are not going to become lawyers, I would argue that it is important to at least have a basic understanding of some business law.

5 out of 5 stars Law and Ehtics in the Business Environment.......2005-09-16

I would have to compliment the teacher that picks this book for their course. The book is interesting and easy to read. The fact that most of the cases are from real life situations makes the reading more interesting and easy to follow! Great book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Supplement.......1998-09-23

This book provides an excellent supplement to a regular college business law text by exposing real world dilemmas, and how they were handled by the courts. Can be used to generate discussion on ethical responsibilities, sexual harassment, and some aspects of agency law.

    Book Description

While women have made progress toward equality in the workplace, gender issues continue to surface in today’s work environment. How are these issues best confronted? This brief collection of cases is designed to help students and employees gain a hands-on understanding of gender issues in the workplace and to provide the necessary tools to handle those issues. Based on actual legal cases, nationally reported incidents, and personal interviews, the case studies in Gender in the Workplace address the range and types of gender issues in the workplace including:

    - Gender stereotypes about work

    - Gender discrimination in the workplace

    - Balancing work and family responsibilities

    - Sexual harassment issues

The case studies place the reader directly "in the action," by requiring the reader to conduct an analysis of real situation (appropriate supporting material, data, and discussion topics are provided) and to make decisions based on that analysis. Through completion of all five cases, the interaction of various gender issues, and the variations of issues in different organizational cultures and work settings are demonstrated. The concluding chapter is devoted to an examination of the connections between the five categories of gender issues explored in cases. An Instructor’s Manual provides additional resources and information that will assist in the discussion of case issues. Epilogues to each case pursued, and what occurred as a result.

This text is intended as a supplement for courses in Management, Human Resources, Public Administration, Gender Studies, Industrial Psychology, Social Psychology, and Sociology of Work. It will also be useful in consulting and training environments.

      Book Description

Voluntary approaches, such as corporate codes of conduct, have been widely advocated as alternatives to traditional approaches to environmental regulation. Yet concern remains that companies cannot be trusted to police themselves and that many of the putative advantages of self regulation, such as reduced cost and increased flexibility, have not been realized in practice. The book systematically analyzes three initiatives (environmental management systems, the Australian Greenhouse Challenge and the Australian mining industry's Code for Environmental Management) and their contribution to public environmental policy. By moving the debate away from narrow considerations of economic efficiency towards a broader framework that accounts for the multiple goals to which environmental policy needs to be directed, this book significantly enhances our understanding of the role that voluntary approaches can play in achieving environmental policy goals. The book is required reading for all those concerned with the design and implementation of modern environmental policy.

      Book Description

The Exxon Valdez incident in 1989 sparked a firestorm of public debate over the role of business in ensuring a safe, healthy environment for ourselves and our children. Today, consumers, employees, shareholders, politicians, and interest groups all demand more environmental awareness from business. To help executives meet the challenge of being profitable, doing the right thing, and helping save the Earth, Environmentalism and the New Logic of Business outlines a program for change that firms can use to maximize their profits and minimize their impact on the environment. Drawing on examples from corporations large (DuPont, McDonald's) and small (Johnsonville Sausage), the authors demonstrate how companies around the world are putting values and a concern for the environment to work to motivate employees, improve service levels, and respond to the constant pressure for innovation, competitive advantage, and care for the bottom line. A highlight of the book is the author's discussion of "the four shades of green" which can be used to gauge of firm's environmental policy and highlight where it might be improved. "Light green" or legal green logic relies on the public policy process to drive its strategy; "market green" logic focuses on customers' demand for better, cheaper, faster; "stakeholder green," similar to the logic of quality processes, includes suppliers, employees, communities, and shareholders; and "dark green" commits a company to being a leader in making environmental principles a fundamental basis of doing business. Challenging the conventional wisdom that green thinking leads to red ink, the authors show how executives can add environmental awareness to the strategic mix and still compete successfully.

      5 out of 5 stars a good wager.......2001-01-01

In a provocative and well-thought-out, albeit short text, the authors, instead of condemning any act of a business to address environmental concerns as too narrow, choose instead to applaud it. The argument is that any move toward environmentalism is a good bet, basing this on the same concept used by 17th century philospher Blaise Pascal who wagered: "If God does not exist, one will lose nothing by believing in him, while if he does exist, one will lose everything by not believing." There's a particularly telling anecdote in the book involving Edgar Woolard, the former chairman of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., after he pronounced the business's commitment to zero pollution. Subsequent to the pronouncement an engineer told Woolard that there wasn't any way one of the plants could meet the new goal. So Woolard tells the engineer that the plant will have to close. Ironically, after the plant's engineers do come up with a solution, it turns out that it will ultimately save du Pont money. This book is a terrific exploration of how some businesses are discovering that environmentalism is not only a must for survival of society, but also for the future of business. Good, well analyzed stories and thinking here.

5 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking Approach to Environmental Issues.......2000-05-12

Should corporations maximize profits OR preserve the environment? Is the cost of an environmentally sensitive business approach an expense OR an investment?

In this timely book, the authors build on the philosophical foundation of Pascal's Wager to advance what I will call Freeman's Wager:

"assume that it is reasonable to bet that there is in fact an environmental crisis. The consequences of being wrong are too great to bet otherwise."

The consequences of this wager for our children and future generations inform and lend urgency to the arguments advanced in this work.

Recognizing the ambiguity of "truth" in relation to the health of the environment and the contentious nature of public discourse on this topic, the authors advance four new environmental strategies for businesses: (1) light green, (2) market green, (3) stakeholder green, (4) dark green. Each of these strategies has its own logic and they do not represent a continuum requiring inevitable motion along a predetermined path.

Rather, these strategies represent options and the book advances a number of convincing arguments that a corporate value system that incorporates environmental considerations can actually lead to a competitive advantage.

This was an enjoyable and thought provoking tome and left me convinced that adopting a shade of green would be a competitive advantage to a company with a clear understanding of "what it stands for" and which embodies "values based capitalism." Such companies can maximize profits AND care for the environment. For these firms, environmentalism is an investment, not an expense.

I would ask the authors to further explore the implications of their thesis for average companies. They did not fully explicate the applicability of their argument to such firms.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever questioned how to live well today while preserving a good world for our children.
