I bought this brand new and it would be a good book if it wasn't poorly manufactured. In the book it skips chapters 4 and half of chapter 5 and makes up for the lost chapters by repeating chapter 3 twice. Sure it's good for getting by in class but it'd be nice to know what chapter 4 and the first half of 5 is all about.

The book is very informative and a pretty easy read. The topics are as expected not as up to date as possible since the business world is constantly changing but it addresses issues in a modern way. Good intro to business textbook.

This is the ultimate summarization of globalization. It is thorough, objective, and is able to avoid all the inaccurate hype attached to the topic. It is heavy reading, very information based, but I enjoyed it immensely and suggest it for anyone seeking to understand globalization.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Typical Self-Help.......2007-03-25

I'm fairly young and just starting in my career really, so I feel I was not the intended audience for this book. It seemed geared more at people who have gone a certain distance in their life and feel that they are missing something.

Admittedly, the topics covered did give me a chance to think about what I do want from my life, but it's all stuff that's been covered dozens of times before in various media. Nothing is really exceptional or noteworthy here, there's no innovative methods or intriguing solutions, just the usual fare about prioritizing and setting goals.

4 out of 5 stars Motivation that's actually practical.......2006-01-03

This book couldn't have come into my life at a better (or worse) time. I am a QM buff and have read a lot of self-help books & know the principle.
I heard a knock at my door. A man stood there and told me he had just bought my house at a foreclosure auction. I had no idea. My ex had this done behind my back after depleting the equity. I had paid for the house myself. I had no legal recourse. I did not have to let the man in but I did, he came over a week later and gave me this book. It had clearly been read by him as there was quite a bit of highlighting. This book had such an impact on me because he did more than read the book, he lived it. He did much, much more than give me a book, he gave me a push and the motivation and inspiration to start all over. At a time when I should be retired after working my whole life for everyone else. I've learned this is not the end. It's a new beginning. This man was a "winner", one in a million and he read the book and gave it to me. I will be ever thankful.

5 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational, It's in my top 3 !!!.......2002-07-09

"In my Life I've read three books, in which EVERY word inspired me. 'Even Eagles Need A Push is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Motivational and Inspiring.......2002-06-01

David McNally uses a number of quotes, anecdotes and exercises to create a sense of purpose for one's life. The book is a cross between a motivational business title like something from Zig Ziglar and a feeling-based inspirational book like something from Leo Buscaglia.

McNally encourages individuals to set goals and work daily to achieve them and succeed at them.

Readers will come away with a positive attitude that anything is possible.

4 out of 5 stars From motivation to inspiration.......2002-02-01

First off, don't be put off by the fact that this book was published in 1994 (copyrighted in 1990). The fact is, it's a timeless book that doesn't draw from current 'techniques' or 'ways of thinking'. It's as relevant today as it was when it was first published.

David McNally begins with the question: "Why does the thrill of soaring begin with the fear of falling?" he goes on to ask how you can overcome that fear and dare to live, and he takes you from motivation through inspiration to action. In fact, if you're prepared to work at this book (sounds strange, doesn't it), it will be you who writes the ending.

This is not so much a table-thumping "You can do it" book, as a quiet journey at your own speed that allows you to discover your own potential and teaches you how to choose your attitude and transform your life... success with dignity would sum it quite nicely.

Book Description

If you read the original Buffettology, you know exactly half of what you need to know to effectively apply Warren Buffett's investment strategies.

Published in 1997, the bestselling Buffettology was written specifically for investors in the midst of a long bull market. Since then we've seen the internet bubble burst, the collapse of Enron, and investors scrambling to move their assets -- what remains of them -- back to the safety of traditional blue chip companies. As price peaks turned into troughs, worried investors wondered if there was any constant in today's volatile market. The answer is yes: Warren Buffett's value investing strategies make money.

The New Buffettology is the first guide to Warren Buffett's selective contrarian investment strategy for exploiting down stocks -- a strategy that has made him the nation's second-richest person. Designed to teach investors how to decipher and use financial information the way Buffett himself does, this book guides investors through opportunity-rich bear markets, walking them step-by-step through the equations and formulas Buffett uses to determine what to buy, what to sell -- and when. Authors Mary Buffett and David Clark explore Buffett's recent investments in detail, proving time and again that his strategy has earned enormous profits at a time no one expects them to -- and with almost zero risk to his capital.

In short, The New Buffettology is an essential companion to the original Buffettology, a road map to investment success in the worst of times.

4 out of 5 stars Good review, a little too much word.......2007-06-08

This is a good book, and a very easy read. However, it sometimes repeats very simple material over and over which could make the reader bored.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it!.......2007-04-07

I am a big fan of Warren Buffet so I had read about his life and his investment style from magazines and googling. I expected to learn more from this book but was very disappointed. It's mostly information I have already learned by researching in the internet.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-27

Easy to read and gives a keen insight to how warren buffet selects his investments. Great for intermediate investors.

3 out of 5 stars Great concepts but the name..........2007-02-07

The general Buffet concepts are covered well. I take off stars because her writing style is so childish as to make you think you are in Kindergarden. Also the whole Warren this and Warren that as if he told her all this is sleasy. Either treat him as a 3rd party or get him to endorse the book personally.

5 out of 5 stars An Illuminating Peek Into The World Of Warren Buffett.......2006-12-12

This book is a "most of what you need to know about value investing but didn't know what to ask" approach to the investment philosophy of Warren Buffett. I also own the first book, but didn't review it. This one is much better.

The New Buffettology is a book of examples. I think that's what I like most about it. It has plenty of theory about the importance of a company having a durable competitive advantage, honest and able management, staying within a circle of competence, ensuring a margin of safety exists, how interest rates affect stock prices, and more. That's great, but the rubber hits the road with the numerous case studies of actual Buffett investments and how he applied the above concepts to help him decide to invest in Coca Cola, Gillette, the Washington Post, and Geico, to name a few.

Along with the case studies come the formulas. Lots and lots of formulas. Does the company have strong earnings with an upward trend? Plug 10 years worth of earnings into your spreadsheet and calculate the annual earnings growth rate. Does the company return an above average Return-On-Equity? Mary Buffett & David Clark show you how to break out those Value Line reports and plug in 10 years worth of ROE numbers into your spreadsheet to calculate the average annual return on shareholders equity for the last decade. What's the stock's value relative to a Treasury bond? You'll learn how to calculate the answer here.

The exercises go on case study after case study. I love it. Roll up your sleeves; dust off your BA-35 solar calculator and get ready to rock. If you want the skinny on value investing ala Buffett style, you had better be prepared to get your hands dirty because this is a thinking investor's book.

This book doesn't just TALK about financial analysis. It shows you how to DO it. Nothing is more boring than long windy theories with no "meat" to back them up. This book serves up the meat in Texas sized portions. Exactly where does one go for 10 years of financial information? Where do you find the current government bond rate? What's important in an annual report? Just how do you find companies that make products with a durable competitive advantage? What should you read? What should you watch? What habits should you develop? How do smart investors use "scuttlebutt" to help them form an opinion about a company? The answers may surprise you.

If value investing is what you want to do, then you have much to learn. And indeed, this book is a great place to start. It's not the only value investing book you should ever read, but is should definitely be one of the first.

3 out of 5 stars Straightforward, no-nonsense survival guide for a changing world.......2005-07-04

Price Pritchett's little book, The Employee Handbook of New Work Habits For A Radically Changing World, should really be called "The Abridged Career Bible" and not a handbook. Could this have anything to do with the lucky number 13? Filled with his "13 Ground Rules for Job Success in the Information Age," Pritchett's book really is a survival manual. In an time of new technologies, services, knowledge work, and fierce worldwide competition, only those open to change-those who are flexible and invest their energy in finding and seizing opportunities-will thrive. Those who resist change and harbor bitterness will only end up going the way of the dinosaurs. And we don't need to be reminded of what eventually happened to the dinosaurs...

Pritchett advises workers to become quick-change artists. In an age of restructuring, outsourcing, downsizing, subcontracting, and forming new alliances, workers can expect new ways of working and having to align immediately with new organizational needs and realities. Being a quick-change artist-mobility-can build an employee's reputation.

Then again, says, Pritchett, so does commitment. Commit fully to your job. Companies now cannot afford to hire more employees to solve common problems. Nevertheless, clients and customers expect quality and speed. Companies' response is to throw fewer people at problems and to do more-faster and better-with less. This calls for highly committed people-those who work from the heart and invest passionately to their jobs. It follows that commitment will result in more satisfying work, too, bringing empowerment, relieving stress, and curing the pain of change.

Through their commitment and working from the heart, employees are contributing and adding value. Workers should think that they are being remunerated for the value they add rather than for their tenure, good intentions or activity level.

Employees' job security, therefore, depends on commitment and how valuable they are to customers. Employees must see themselves as service centers. They need to sharpen their insights into their personal "market" and understand what it is their customers do, expect and need. Employees need to know how they fit into the overall picture and how they will contribute to customers' success. Remember, warns Pritchett: "customer" does not only imply people outside the organization but co-workers and internal customers as well. Career success depends on building strong relationships with both internal and external customers and a reputation for responsiveness and quality service.

Just ensure that service and responses are delivered in a timely fashion! We do, as Pritchett says, live in an impatient world. Organizations, then, must accelerate. Workers must operate with a sense of urgency. These are raw survival instincts at work. To survive: speed up. To be successful, organizations must emphasize action: cover ground quickly, eliminate excess baggage, abandon outmoded practices, decentralize, and delegate decision-making power. There really is no room for slow adjustment to change. Valuable employees are those who push the process of change along.

But change brings ambiguity and uncertainty!

Fine. As Pritchett advises, accept it, and manage your own morale! Workers need to realize that placing their morale in someone else's hands disempowers them and that ambiguity may, in fact, be the in the best interest of their career.

Sure, they will be faced with new expectations, shifting priorities, different reporting relationships, vague job descriptions...

Workers need to act upbeat, accept change, and create clarity for themselves-to set priorities, meet deadlines, chase down needed information, show initiative and an ability to improvise. They need to work as though they are in business for themselves.

So what does that mean?

Traditional hierarchies are flattening out. Organizations want to get closer to customers and clients, and are decentralizing business units. The result? Mini-enterprises or self-contained work groups that operate more independently. Employees will need to assume more responsibility for the success of the entire enterprise and consider personally how they can help cut costs, improve productivity, and innovate.

In other words, as hierarchies collapse, responsibility, power, and authority are being pushed to the lower levels. Self-contained work teams must stand accountable for their collective results. Accountability implies thinking in broad terms, considering the larger picture, and considering outcomes. Workers must streamline their approach to economize time, energy, and other resources.

Broad thinking and innovation take brains: it doesn't take long for skills and knowledge to become outmoded in a rapidly changing world-a world that takes no pity on those who are lazy about learning. Workers need to stay in school in order to retool themselves and to keep up with the latest knowledge. Their future employability depends on up-to-date credentials, the latest skills, and the most recent developments in their chosen field. Home study, reading, attending workshops and seminars, volunteering for understudy or apprenticeship programs, asking for learning opportunities-all of these should become "habits".

Lifelong learning implies continuous improvement. Yes, and according to Pritchett, it's the best insurance for both employees' careers and for organizations. How? It is the relentless quest for a better way, for high quality craftsmanship, for daily perfection. Continuous improvement-and this is not just limited to learning, either-may be gradual, but in the long run, it adds up to a competitive advantage.

Employees also need to learn not to rely solely on their reputation anymore: the world is changing too quickly. Employees must then strive to upgrade their job performance-response time, quality, cost control, and customer service-on an ongoing basis.

Improving job performance also means building a reputation as a problem solver. Employees must learn to take care of problems, not point them out. By searching beyond themselves, for solutions, they disempower themselves and lose the ability to find workable solutions. The pro-active solution, according to Pritchett, is for employees to assume ownership of problems and to allow the solutions to start with them.

To summarize, change is inevitable, and there is little, if anything, organizations can do to stop it. The best they can do is adapt and to alter their expectations-preferably before they have to. Some are fortunate enough to scramble and adjust when push comes to shove. As to the rest? Well, just remember the dinosaurs...

2 out of 5 stars Some good points but a nasty overtone.......2005-04-22

This book does mention some valid points about taking control of your own career. But it fails to acknowledge what motivates us to work and has a horrible over tone that preys on the fear culture you find during redundancies. I'd look elsewhere for motivation, somewhere that tells you how to be more confident rather than "do this or else".

5 out of 5 stars Recreating Your Job.......2002-02-16

As a manager in a highly competitive service industry, I could not deliver a better message to my staff than this short, highly readable "who's in charge of your life" script for the entrepeneur in all of us.

Adaptability, accountability, and the pure joy of realizing your version of yourself in this age of the "chaos theory" is in there. A fun, inspiring, recharging read.

1 out of 5 stars A good example of a book that should be burnedý........2002-01-29

Let's cut to the chase. The message of this book is quite simple:
Change your current attitude and increase your productivity so that you will ad value to your company in the long run. In other words, all for the benefit of us (managers, CEOs, Bill Gates, etc.) at the expense of you, the employee (the tried and true `profits over people' mentality rears its ugly head once again in corporate America). If the events of September 11 or the recent Enron affair haven't yet taught us that money and misguided "motivation" should NOT be the primary goals in life, I don't know what will.

1 out of 5 stars The inhuman workplace.......2002-01-26

This book should be titled "Chicken Soup For The Displaced Worker." With one sticking point: You get more depressed after you read it. If anyone hands you this book, tell them no thanks. I strongly agree with the reviewers who said that this is a book for clueless managers looking to jump on meaningless trends.

    Book Description

For a long time, it looked like FedEx would never get off the ground. The company’s early years were an unending series of legal, financial, and operational crises that continually threatened its ability to stay in business. Yet FedEx's leaders and employees were incredibly resourceful and resilient. Pilots used personal credit cards to gas up planes, paychecks weren’t cashed, and in one of the most famous episodes, founder Fred Smith literally gambled the company’s last remaining funds to keep the planes flying. Becuase Roger Frock was with the companies from the start, he is able to chronicle these real-life hardships and hard-fought triumphs as only an insider can. With humor and insight, he describes how FedEx overcame impossible odds to become one of the world's greatest success stories, a revolutionary company that truly changed the way the world does business.

    5 out of 5 stars A fascinating story........2007-08-02

It is hard to imagine what our lives would be like without the reliable overnight delivery system pioneered by FedEx. It is equally difficult to imagine the obstacles that had to be overcome to make this a viable business.

Roger Frock possesses two valuable attributes in telling the FedEx story. First of all he is the ultimate insider who started working with Fred Smith, the founder, before the company was even formed. Secondly, he writes well. The result is a fascinating book that can keep you up late at night.

This is a story about people who were captured by a dream, who lived that dream. The made the dream come true despite times when the dream verged into a nightmare. Not only did the company have to face the problems of a then government regulated industry, but also the OPEC oil embargo, well-established competitors in the air transportation industry and the constant need for venture capital.

Mr. Frock clearly develops the main events through each phase of the company's growth, showing how a committed, talented group of people can work together to make the impossible happen. Along the way he also illustrates solid business principles that can help any company seeking to set and achieve its goals.

5 out of 5 stars FedEx story delivers.......2007-05-23

FedEx is more than a household word; it is a household verb replacing the word "delivery" as in, "No worries, we'll FedEx this so they'll have it tomorrow." The story of this colorful company's history and the personalities that brought it to fruition is captivating - filled as it is with cliffhangers, dodged disasters and near failure. In the early days of Federal Express, nothing was a sure thing. Founder Fred Smith and his management team had to elude financial ruin while inventing an entirely new industry. Author and former FedEx general manager Roger Frock fondly recounts the tumultuous early days of the company, although you may wish he had shared more of his insight into the personality of Smith, who remains an elusive unknown. We recommend this book to those who enjoy rags-to-riches corporate stories or to anyone who relies on FedEx to deliver goods that "absolutely, positively have to be there overnight."

3 out of 5 stars Better than expected........2007-05-13

I am a business major and this book was required reading for one of my classes. The teacher said it was a very entertaining book, but seeing as his passion for life is 'management' I wasn't expecting much. But after an initial reading I actually began to get into the material, and was pleasantly suprised to find out that it was quite a good book. It was very interesting to see how the company went from nothing to what it is today, and how peoples lifes were affected by these changes. If you have the slightest interest in business or the transportation industry, I would recommend this item.

5 out of 5 stars Soul of a New Business.......2007-04-30

    With apologies to Tracy Kidder!

Mr. Frock's saga, and it can be described only as that, chronicles the birth, development and maturity of FedEX, one of the most successful businesses in US business history. Fred Smith and the team he assembled to develop a really unique idea -- overnight small package delivery to anywhere in the United States -- demonstrated how vision, teamwork, integrity, and creativity CAN overcome daunting challenges. We almost take FedEx for granted now, but Mr. Frock, one of the original senior management team, tells how this was achieved. And the book is one of those page turners, unique really, because we all know how the story ends. But I literally could not put it down.

Some impressions: Mr. Frock tells the story well, making even some of the techical stuff understandable. I really enjoyed his sense of wonder and amazement he expresses at the challenges the company met and overcame. He places people and their personal achivements right where they belong in a story like this -- right in the middle. Mike Collins, the astronaut who orbited the moon while Armstrong and Aldrin landed, once expressed his feelings as the mission went forward: I think we are actually going to pull this off. It is easy to see Roger reaching some tough goal in the business saying that...

Another is the characterization of the formiable FedEx founder, Fred Smith. As Mr. Frock notes when most of senior management team was set to resign when it appeared Mr. Smith himself would be forced to resign in Board dispute: Was our decision to resign the right one? Absolutely! We felt great allegiance to our leader... But even Fred slipped once...but you need to read the bood to find out why. (And why he bet the FedEx checking account in a visit to Vegas...)

Finally, the last section of the book is FedEx's view of the people part of any successful business: an open door policy, security, fair treatment, and employees evaluating management. There are more, but as the story is told, one realizes these principles were actively applied to the the people who made (and make up) the organization.

A great story, well told. Highest marks.

5 out of 5 stars Living The Vision.......2007-03-08

I joined Federal Express in August 1974 and remained with the company until January 1999. I had the privilege of working for Roger Frock beginning in 1975. He has truly brought to life many of the events, people and tribulations that made FedEx great. The road to success was very uneven, but we never seemed to lose the faith in our leadership. While Roger credits Fred Smith with strong leadership, it was the team of Frock, Fitzgerald, Fagan, Basch, Brandon, Wilmott and many others who could thrive with only one rule; Do What is Right...right for the customer, right for the company and right for the employees. Today FedEx has volumes of rules, but the early days were built aound a vision. Execution took courage, tenacity, ingenuity and loyalty. Fred Smith and the senior mangement team (mentioned above) inculcated all of the attributes in a small and somewhat ragtag group of employees. I only wish Roger had brought out some of the humor of the early days. Pay was low, but we laughed alot and played practical jokes on each other.

Bravo Zulu (Well Done) Roger for a well written book, simple in style, yet so demonstrative of the events and people.

    Book Description

"This much needed book . . .is a creative, helpful, and hopeful contribution at a time when we are especially challenged to bridge cultures in the pursuit of mutual understanding and peace."
    — Jimmy Carter, Nobel Peace Laureate

In our global society, challenging conflicts abound in personal, business, government, and international settings. Many of these conflicts are complicated by layers of miscommunication, cultural misunderstandings, and completely different ways of looking at the world. These conflicts cannot be solved by goodwill or sincere intentions alone. In our multicultural world, we need new tools to address gaps in communication and understanding and the conflicts that flow from them.

Bridging Cultural Conflicts answers this need in groundbreaking ways that cut through complexity, replacing confusion with clarity. It introduces mindful awareness, cultural fluency, and conflict fluency as tools for decoding and moving through intercultural conflicts, and for deepening and integrating change. The book shows how fluency with culture and conflict can be learned through attention and practice, just as we would internalize a new language. As fluency is acquired, a process called dynamic engagement is presented to help prevent intercultural conflict, limit its escalation, and transform it into a learning experience.

Michelle LeBaron's approach in Bridging Cultural Conflicts is human, practical, and adaptable to a wide range of interpersonal, community, organizational, and political conflicts. Drawing from her work as an attorney, mediator, scholar, and internationally acclaimed consultant, Michelle combines the dynamism of Western approaches to conflict resolution with the insight and balance of Eastern approaches. In the process, she offers a wide array of creative strategies and usable tools. As we urgently seek better ways to work and live together and to address the issues that divide us, this timely book inspires flexibility, creativity, and hope.

This is an extraordinary book. For those of us involved in cross-cultural training and negotiations work, this book brings together a progressive practioner's life experience and emotional intelligence to create new ways of framing our work. I used up a "highlighter" through the first two chapters. If your work is in mediation, cross-cultural communication, conflict resolution, negotiation, or facilitation, this book is a great investment. If you just want to know more about interactions between people and yourself, and come to better understand the internal dialogues you have when you are conflicted, this is a great, entertaining, and enlightening read.

    Book Description

Business today is framed by two global tensions. On the one hand, the age of the Internet has ushered in an unprecedented interdependence. People from far-flung reaches of the globe now find themselves in close contact, and collaboration is the order of the day. On the other hand, we still live in an autonomous world of diverse nations and unique individuals, and the businesses and organizations that we have created to represent us are equally unique. In this conflicting environment, a special approach to leadership is called for, one that tames these two forces and integrates them in a political but ethical way. The Connective Leadership model defines that approach, emphasizing various modes of working with and through other people instead of bowing to authoritarianism. This includes creating short-term coalitions instead of long-term alliances and forming ennobling enterprises to which people want to commit themselves. Based on extensive research analyzing the leadership styles of more than 5,000 leaders and managers world-wide, Lipman-Blumen has developed an innovative strategy that demonstrates how to move beyond competition towards an "ethical instrumentalism" that employs the talents of others to achieve strategic goals. Thoroughly researched and accessibly written, this book--originally published under the title The Connective Edge--provides the skills and information needed to move organizations, nations, and people into the emerging era with stellar results.

4 out of 5 stars An Intuitive Vision of the Future of Leadership.......2005-04-28

Jean Lipman-Blumen shares over 25 years of leadership research intertwined with an introduction to her revolutionary thoughts on how to break apart the aspects of leadership into nine distinct categories. The author is none too shy to establish concrete groundwork for the history of leadership in the United States for the uneducated reader. After abruptly slapping her readers in the face with the latest era of leadership - the Connective Era - Blumen presents her leadership style cautiously by saying those who attempt to lead in the manner she presents will be scorned as non-traditional and poor leaders by factions such as the media. The meat of this work is filled with example after example of people displaying certain aspects of her Connective Leadership Model - but none who embodies The Connective Leader. As readers come to the third section of the book, Jean Lipman-Blumen explains the necessary research organizations must do in order to appoint the proper leaders; then, awkwardly wedges in a section about female leadership; and finishes strong tying together this brilliant manual on how each of us can work toward becoming the self-actualized connective leader.

    4 out of 5 stars A Post-modern vision of leadership.......2004-08-05

Lipman-Blumen presents a post-modern vision of leadership, evolving from the conflict in society and organizations today between interdependence and diversity. Connective leaders are able to select and apply from several achievement strategies depending on the needs of a particular situation. This flexibility gives them the ability to bridge these two conflict forces.

The book is conceptual very strong...the ideas are insightful and well researched, using a variety of data sources. The two main limitations are that the book is not well connected to other related patterns of thinking in the literature and that it is not the strongest in the direction of how to be a connective leader. In fact, much of the text is really a restatement about how different leaders exemplify a particular strategy rather than how a leader selects and uses a mixture of these situationally. I understand why these limitations exist, but I can certainly not suggest that this is the only book on leadership you should read.

One other comment...the book has a very strong feminist slant, proposing a shift from traditional patriarchical values to a more inclusive world view. I think, on the whole, that is a very good thing. However, the author's understanding of Machiavelli takes his writing and thinking out of context. This is only a minor quibble, but I find it interesting how the author can be so dismissive in her effort to claim a new vision of leadership.

5 out of 5 stars Wisdom, Eloquence, and Circumspection.......2001-08-01

As those who have read Hot Groups already know, Lipman-Blumen is one of the most innovative thinkers now commenting on the contemporary business world. With this book, she makes a substantial and truly significant contribution to our understanding of several separate but interdependent issues: leadership, connectivity, human development, intellectual capital, strategic alliances (both internal and external), and organizational transformation. Yes, yes, I know. There are hundreds of other books already published which discuss several of the same subjects and many of them are first-rate, as Lipman-Blumen would be the first to acknowledge. All of them are listed in her superb "References" section and key ideas from several are woven into her crisp narrative. One of the several reasons why this book is different is the provision and explanation of what she calls "The Connective Leadership Model" which is the focus of Part II. Typical of Lipman-Blumen, she does not suggest that hers is the only model to consider; in fact, she strongly urges her reader to correlate her or his organizations needs and interests with the structure of the model, selecting whatever is most important. However, I presume to offer a caveat: Although by now an overworked buzz word, "integration" of any combination of components is absolutely essential. Whatever the model, its components must be cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective as are those which comprise "The Connective Leadership Model."

Wisely, following a precise and eloquent Preface, Lipman-Blumen focuses in Part One on "The Changing Dynamics of Leadership" which, inevitably, have changed at least to some extent since she wrote this book, first published in 1996. Nonetheless, her rationale remains rock-solid. Then and now, organizations need (and will continue to need) leadership which is "more politically savvy and instrumental, yet more ethical, authentic, accountable, and particularly, more ennobling." She calls this new approach "connective leadership" and suggests that it can "potentially transform the destructive tensions of diversity and interdependence into constructive leadership action." I hasten to add that, in most organizations where leaders tend to be identified by title, political and economic leverage, degree of authority, the "connective leadership" to which she refers can -- and should -- include everyone involved in a given organization. Stated another way, what she seems to be advocating is what I call "collaborative initiative" which can (and should) function at all levels. Those organizations which achieve and then sustain such initiatives (e.g. Southwest Airliners) have a "connective edge" over their competition. Lipman- Blumen provides an excellent discussion of this point in Chapter 10 and Noel Tichy also has much of value to say about this in his own book, The Leadership Engine.

Lipman-Blumen organizes her material within three Parts: The Changing Dynamics of Leadership (a review and examination of "the origins and evolution of the human need for leadership"), The Connective Leadership Model (more about that in a moment), and Bridging to the Stage 3 World (an exploration of the "empirical organizational results and the philosophical implications of the Connective Leadership Model"). The nature of leadership which she advocates is "both provocative and savvy, yet pragmatic and honorable." I wish it were possible to reproduce in this brief commentary the model she presents in Part Two. Essentially, it consists of three separate but interdependent components:

DIRECT : The intrinsic, competitive, and power styles of leadership

RELATIONAL: The collaborative, contributory, and vicarious styles of leadership

INSTRUMENTAL: The personal, social, and entrusting styles of leadership

Lipman-Blumen correctly points out that the most effective leaders are those who possess an appropriate combination of all three. As I read Part Two, I thought about the striking differences between the leadership styles of Gandhi and Patton. Relying entirely on active (not passive) strategies and tactics of non-violence, Gandhi helped India to achieve independence. Patton was required to use entirely different strategies and tactics to rescue the American troops at Bastogne. For me, one of this book's most insightful chapters is Chapter 11, "Women Leaders: An Oxymoron? Or Does Gender Make a Difference?" Lipman-Blumen poses and then addresses a number of gender-specific issues. Once again, as I read this chapter, I thought about leaders such as Joan of Arc, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Elizabeth I, and Catherine the Great...each of whom possessed a combination of direct, relational, and instrumental leadership styles in appropriate balance. That was their "connective edge."

Within the context of explaining the need for what she calls "connective" leadership, Lipman-Blumen examines the theme of the contradictory pulls of two global tensions, interdependence and diversity. The former demands collaboration and mutuality while often seeming to threaten the independence and individualism required by the latter. "Connective" leadership is needed to integrate or at least coordinate these two sometimes adversarial forces. The leader with a "connective eye" can help groups or parties who must work or live interdependently (through geography, industry, etc.) with those who often have quite different agendas and goals, to focus together on problems that the enlightened leader recognizes they share even when, especially when others don't "get it." Lipman-Blumen believes that these two global tensions will be with us for some time to come. Leaders who don't develop the understanding and skills to deal with them effectively are almost certain to fail. I am reminded of what Edison once said about innovation: It is the ability to make connections. That is as true of the Gaza Strip as it is of an incandescent light.

I highly recommend this book to senior-level executives, of course, who seek that "edge" for themselves as well as for their organizations. But I also highly recommend this book to others whom Lipman-Blumen may not have had primarily in mind when she wrote the book: Clergy, teachers, coaches, and (especially) parents. Youth ages (let's say) 6-16 also have a great need for the "connective" leadership which Lipman-Blumen advocates. The impact of their leadership on young people may well have much greater impact than that of anyone else, especially now when the world is more interdependent than at any prior time in human history.

5 out of 5 stars If you read just one book on leadership, this is it!.......2001-07-31

The Connective Edge is a remarkable book, one of my very favorites. In it, Jean Lipman-Blumen presents the the Connective Leadership model, consisting of nine "Achieving Styles." She advocates developing all of the styles and merging them into a balanced leadership approach that can address any challenge in our increasingly complex world.

This book has enabled me to better understand myself, my colleagues, and the organizations with which I interact. The Achieving Styles are presented in a way that allows the reader to understand the components of leadership and to identify his or her preferred styles. Dr. Lipman-Blumen also shows how to strengthen one's less preferred styles and how to apply the concepts of Connective Leadership to effective relationships with people, organizations, and society.

The Connective Edge, nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, works on every level. The model it presents is balanced, flexible, and practical. Professionals or students in any field will learn a great deal from it.
A brief review can't do this book justice -- a rating of 5 stars is not high enough! I have given or recommended it to friends, family, and colleagues, and the feedback has been 100% positive. This is a winner!

5 out of 5 stars Far Reaching, Insightful.......2001-05-26

There is no shortage of books out there that try to categorize leaders into different leadership styles. Often, the leadership styles delineated seem arbitrary. That is the difference between Lipman's book and other books: Lipman has outlined some really useful categories for leaders. These styles are: instrumental, relational, and direct. These styles are further divided into three categories each. Lipman also makes it clear that the most successful leaders use a range of these styles and do not overuse the one style they are best at. Lipman uses dozens of examples to make her ideas easily understood. And many of the leaders (like the Brazilian activist Chico Mendes) she mentions are ones I haven't found in other leadership books.
The chief prediction of the book (that leaders who do not foresee the consequences of a connective world will not succeed in tomorrow's world) is brilliant and far-reaching...
