Knitting is more popular today than it has been for decades-it's been called "the hot new hobby" and even "the new yoga." The latest generation of knitters thrives on quick projects that are creative, fulfilling, and relaxing-and can fit into a busy lifestyle. Weekend Knitting collects 50 unique, innovative projects and ideas for the beginning- and intermediate-level knitter, many of which can be made in a weekend or less.
Every project is presented in full-color photographs and with clear instructions. Weekend Knitting also features beautiful photos shot in and around real homes, evoking perfect knitting weekends filled with fresh air, friends, and delicious food.
Longtime knitting expert Melanie Falick has also brought together quotes about knitting, creativity, and balanced living from such diverse sources as Virginia Woolf, Pablo Picasso, and Saint Francis of Assisi. Recipes for treats such as hot cocoa and butter cookies and tips about fun and stress-reducing activities like hand massages, taking a bath, and hosting a knitting film festival complete the weekend knitting experience.

Good, fun book with fairly easy patterns.......2007-07-08
I made the hand warmers and the chunky scarf, both fairly easy but fun patterns. The pictures are nice and the other tidbits, like recipes and ideas, are quite enjoyable. Overall, one of the knitting books I would keep rather than borrow from a friend.
Weekend Knitting.......2007-04-25
Wonderful book ~ even in the spring time! It's refreshing and enjoyable whether your knit or "knot" ;) Highly recommend! I purchased book used which arrived in almost new condition for an eighth of the price!
Great projects.......2007-04-22
To be clear - you aren't going to make most of these projects in a weekend, however the projects are really wonderful. I've made a number of items from this book - the patterns are clear and photos make it easy to follow.
weekend knitting.......2007-01-22
i found the flower washcloth pattern a little vague.
and the finger puppet,difficult.
You'll Be Amazed.......2006-05-09
This book is filled with easy weekend knits that cover the gamut. Sometimes with these sorts of books there are a load of scarves, gloves, socks and hats. Not with this book. It has simple sweaters, ponchos, and home wears (and of course some gloves, socks, and hats). Most of the patterns are also timeless classics.
The instructions are easy to read and follow (even for a novice). The book has lovely pictures that show you the end product from many different angles. The descriptions of non-standard stitches are amazingly clear. You'll find yourself referencing this book whenever you need a quick gift.

Book Description
Furniture design is a complex art. Traditionally, techniques of the craft have been passed down from master to apprentice, but these days that is less and less the case in contemporary design. Students are now required to take courses and figure out much of it themselves. This book, as with others in the Design Secrets series, takes readers into the studio and reveals tips and techniques as well as the inspiration that brought the concept to life.
Many graphic and product designers are crossing into furniture design, including Karim Rashid, a designer of product, space, light, and fashion, and Todd Oldham, a photographer, graphic designer, product designer, interior designer, and influence in film/video and TV. Oldham is now the star designer at Lazy Boy, a company that has experienced a remarkable rebirth and revamp.
Design Secrets: Furniture shadows similar success stories by showcasing award-winning furniture designs from around the world. Each profile is complete with sketches, notes, and interim iterations revealing how the final piece came to be.

Teaching Tool.......2007-01-10
Very nice publication, well presented and concise. Information is limited as to the "how to" in my opinion but gives a very goog idea, and direction as to where to start when designing for manufacturing. Introduces a broad range of approaches regarding techniques and material. Well illustrated in an understantable and steady format. Good research and illustration (introduction) of manufacturing techniques and processes. Must have for furniture making teaching tool.
Great insight into the product development process.......2007-01-04
For those looking to be inspired and to get some insight into the design process from the product idea through to production, then read this book.

The Pursuit of Wow!

Does your work matter? Do you transform mundane tasks into "WOW Projects!"? And, most important, do you consider projects "dynamic, stimulating, a major bond builder with co-workers, a source of buzz among end-users, and ... inspiring, exhausting, hot, cool, sexy, where everyone else wants to be"? If not, consider reading this enthusiastic project primer, which joins The Brand You50 and The Professional Service Firm50 in Tom Peters's list-filled Reinventing Work series.
Stressing the importance of following a project from start to finish, Peters breaks the WOW Project (also known as the "Way Cool" project, by the way) into four stages--create, sell, implement, and exit--and 50 lists. No. 24 (titled "Work on BUZZ ... all the time!") recommends making a stir about the "WOW-worthy project," showing off your team's success with buttons, mugs, and T-shirts. Shameless? Perhaps. But if the project is truly worthy, then "parading your team's spunk is a matchless sales/marketing--not to mention morale-building--ploy."
Peters--who communicates in lists, one-word sentences, bold, capitalized, and half-tone text, parenthetical asides with jumpy punctuation, and more than a few interjections of "WOW!" and "Way cool!"--is not for everyone. Mellow readers may want, instead, to check out Eric Verzuh's The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management. But project managers seeking to shake up mundane assignments will find plenty of original, easy-to-implement ideas in this guide to getting things done. --Rob McDonald
Book Description
The common denominator/bottom line for both the professional service firm/PSF and the individual/Brand You is: the project. And for the cool individual in the cool professional service firm there is only one answer: the cool project.
A seminar participant said: "Reward excellent failures. Punish mediocre successes." So, how many of you are at work -- right now -- on "mediocre successes"? At work on projects that won't be recalled, let alone recalled with fondness and glee, a year from now?
We don't study professional service firms. (Mistake.) And we don't study WOW Projects. (Worse mistake.) There is, of course, a project management literature. But it's awful. Or, at least, misleading. It focuses almost exclusively on the details of planning and tracking progress and totally ignores the important stuff like: Is it cool? Is it beautiful? Will it make a difference? My No.1 epithet: "On time . . . on budget . . . who cares?" I.e., does it matter? Will you be bragging about it two--or ten--years from now? Is it a WOW project?
So, then: Step #1 . . .the organization . . .the professional service firm/PSF 1.0. Step 2 . . .the individual . . .the pursuit of distinction/Brand You. And: Step #3 . . . the work itself . . . the memorable project/WOW Projects.
The Project50 is a simple and handy guide that provides 50 easy steps to help the modern businessperson choose the right project, find the right team, develop strategies for success, and ultimately know when it's time to move on.

Too Hard to pull the Content from the Marketing.......2006-06-02
Too many fonts, Bold, Highlighted, Red black, !#@!#!^% marks to read what the point is. There is information in the book but you have to work hard to extract it. Too disjointed. "Paly" ("my Pal said this, my friend said that ") and condescending in style for me.
Guides you in making your work and your life matter........2002-06-01
When you learn to use this little book you can turn nasty little jobs into opportunities that are rewarding. Sounds like the same old words but it sure doesn't feel like "the same old" when you get it to work the first few times. It MAGIC and it makes your project fun, manageable, and they are all set up for further correction and deeper development.
I used to hate making some business telephone calls and after I defined the project and found the WOW in it, it became O.K and then went on to be one of my strengths and I'm making friends on the telephone now and have doubeled my income. This is powerful and Tom Peters is to big a part of our business evolution to not have as a traveling companion as we become more and more part of the global brain.
From ordinary task to cool, sexy, memorable WOW! projects.......2002-01-07
Tom Peters is an ex-McKinsey & Co. consultant, who become a management guru by being the co-author of business super-bestseller 'In Search of Excellence' (1982). He has written several books after that huge success, but nothing has come close in quality. This (little) book is part of his 'Reinventing Work' series.
The aim of this book is to make us "believe that work can be cool. That the work matters." The reason? "Work - yours and mine - as we know it today will be reinvented in the next ten years." Perhaps you believe this, but I do not. Yes, we can make work and, in this case, projects more interesting. Tom Peters comes up with a list of 50 ways how to do this. The list is split up in four parts: (1) Create; (2) Sell; (3) Implement; and (4) Exit. Each of the 50 ways raised consists of a short introduction, the main point ("the nub"), the impact, and some examples and quotes. Most of the 50 ways are quite interesting, but they could have been cut down to some 25.
I always feel disappointed when I have to write a negative review, but this time I have no choice. Tom Peters is a famous management guru and an excellent motivational speaker. I feel that he tries to bring his famous energy from his seminars across by using plenty of capitals, wild colors, abbreviations, and exclamation marks. But it just does not work (for me). There are some interesting points, but he would have been better by producing a video of his seminars or writing a proper book - like 'In Search of Excellence' (1982) - on projects. For people interested in projects and project management there is plenty of choice elsewhere. Although the book is small and consists of only 200 pages, the book is not that simple to read due to its format and structure.
Useful, if (in appearence) banal and silly.......2001-12-18
We are in the age of manufactured enthusiasm. How anyone can imagine that regular work in a business should be stimulating to the point of being really really cool is simply beyond me. Yet year in and year out, Tom Peters (and an immense cohort of lesser talents) continue to tell us that yes, work can be fun and cool, etc etc. And he continues to make the really really big bucks doing so.
Either Peters is onto something, or we are all fools for treating him like he is. What I believe is that he has inserted himself into business speak as one of our principal formulators of vocabulary to dress up our normal drudgery as something more than it is.
Peters pumps businessmen up, flatters their vanities, and sends them back to the real work with a new vocabulary of "change agents," "WoW projects," and innumerable other expressions of similar banality. He tells them that what they are doing is significant and interesting, and that they can make every project into a fantiastical thing that will change the workd as well as enhance their careers. This boggles the mind, particularly if you have read it more than once in such puffed up venues as Fast Company and Wired, which I believe bring the the profession of journalism to the crudest boosterism, akin to the promoters of primitive Western cities in the 19C America.
In Project 50, Peters offers "fifty ways to transform every `task' into a project that matters." They range from "reframing" the task as it was posed (make it revolutionary) to selling it succinctly ("metaphor time!") to implementing it ("celebrate failure"!! as a learning experince and as a useful exercise of thinking "crazy") to Exiting ("Seed your freaks into the mainstream"!). If this does not want to make you vomit, try reading it straight through. Doesn't it make you cringe?
And yet.
In my education work with managers whom I sincerely admire and who are undoubtedly highly intelligent and savvy, they gobble this stuff up and use it. While they disdain much of the ridiulous in Peters' vocabulary (the "nub", etc.), they find it profitable to discuss these ideas and it inspires them to change. Thus, I must conclude that there is something is all this hype, something useful that gets pulled out and applied. I just wish that it didn't seem so trivial and silly, so over the top for people who consider themselves writers. I saw a group of extremely bright people wave this book like it was Mao's Red Book durin the cultural revolution. It was stupefying.
So I must say: this book is useful. I make money from it too. And it changes behavior, at least in the activities that I have seen as an education professional. Thus, I must recommend it with a grain of salt. Don't get carried away, but don't have too closed a mind either.
WOW! This is a lot of WOW material........2001-06-29
I must say that this book is packed with insightful tips on how to truly create "WOW!" work. Peters is truly adapt at bringing successful theories into every day practices that can be implemented to succeed.
However, I did feel that this probably could have stopped at 20 or 25? It seemed that the books was continually stocked full of lists of things to do. If Peters truly wants to have his practices/theories implemented, he is going to have to break it down to maybe the top 10. Make one or two TTD at the conclusion of the book.
Overall, I feel that the reader will leave with useful information, and with a slight feeling of being overwhelmed.

Customer Reviews:
One of the less satisfying books in the Evil Genius series.......2006-04-22
I was really displeased with this book, and I am familiar with the general format of the "Evil Genius" series since I own quite a few of them. In this particular book of the series, there is little insight dispensed, and mainly you are being given just a list of components you'll need and a vague idea of the kind of work you need to undertake to get your systems working. Most of the instruction comes from the kits specified, and you could have done that without the book! If you are really interested in automotive electronics more from the viewpoint of wondering how does it work and how does it all fit together to control the automobile, then let me suggest "Understanding Automotive Electronics", currently in its sixth edition, by William Ribbens. This book is more than a automotive technician manual, but it is not so intense that you need to have more than a college sophomore's level of understanding electronics either. Read that book, then come back to this book for project ideas, but not much more. Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here:
Chapter 1: Instrumentation
Chapter 2: Comfort Features
Chapter 3: Intelligent Functions
Chapter 4: Security and Safety
Chapter 5: A Computer in Your Car
Chapter 6: Power Supplies
Chapter 7: Display Technologies
Chapter 8: Input Devices
Chapter 9: In-Car Audio
Chapter 10: Storage Devices
Chapter 11: Speech Recognition
Chapter 12: GPS
Chapter 13: Onboard Diagnostics
Chapter 14: Wireless Connections
Chapter 15: Car PC Software
Not what I was expecting.......2006-03-16
The other two star review was the most truthfull about this book. Most of the projects don't give you a step by step for completing the project. Most of the projects just tell you too buy a kit and follow the directions. It gives the electrical skematics but if you have no electrical experience this does you no good. The only thing good it does is give you ideas on what to install on your car.
out of this world.......2006-01-12
i was very sceptical when i first picked up this book but after the first few pages i was drawb into the sheer brilliance of it the projects in it ranged from both the simple to the more in depth and i recommended it highly to every1
SIMPLY GENIUS.......2006-01-12
I got this book as a christmas present and the first thing i thought was this is exactly what i need. my life long search for a book that covers all of the subjects which i have wanted to know about since the day i was born. i would have been satisfied if this was the only present i got but none compared to this book. i would gladly trade in my ipod for this book if thats what it had to take to get one. This book deserves to be nominated for the times book of the year!! but dont just take my word for it go and buy it now and i promise you wont regret it
Great.......2006-01-12
Great book excellent read over the christmas period i really loved it. The paper was thin i must admit but so what I think car guy is a whiner, Its not exactly the authors thought that the paper is thin. I loved the experiments. Did you know the guy who wrote this was only 17 when he finished it, he is a young genius. I recommened this book to any of the budding scientists amoung you.

This is a fantastic step by step approach to learning through INTELLIGENT craft activities. No more growing been shoots, like we've all done 100 times before. This book is full of thought provoking, challenging, unusual craft ideas about the world. It is aimed at late primary to early high school aged kids, but I enjoyed the activities as much as my kids did. We have used almost all of the activities in this book, from making our own mud bricks to the creating a dream travel box. The lay out is fantastic with lots of photo's. Highly Recommended.......2007-09-27
This book has many beautiful projects. It is one of the top two books in my large collection.
50 pretty project ideas .......2007-09-21
This book follows Heidi's Simply Beautiful Beading but it stands on its own by showing techniques to make the projects shown. There are well-defined photographs of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and fashion accessories. None of the projects are particularly difficult to make once you know the basic techniques, briefly shown at the front of the book.
Love Heidi Boyd's books.......2007-08-31
I've recently discovered Heidi Boyd's bead books. I love her ideas and instructions. They aren't "way out there" but are original, simple designs and the instructions are very visual and easy to follow.
Beautiful book.......2007-05-19
This is a beautiful book. Almost every project in it was something I would want to make, and they all are in the range of beginner/intermediate in complexity. Instructions are clear and easy to follow with excellent pictures. A great purchase.
A beader's must have!.......2006-02-09
I purchased Heidi Boyd's first beading book and loved the simple, yet beautiful ideas. The project ideas in this book are so elegant, yet simple for the beginner or avid beader. If you are new to beading or have been beading for a long time, you should own this book, I highly recommend it!

Customer Reviews:
a good introduction to model rockets.......2006-12-06
If you have no experience with model rockets and wish to get an idea of
what the hobby is all about, then you'll probably like this book. I
bought it for the Basic Stamp projects, but I found the entire book to be
quite interesting, just as I've found most of the "Evil Genius" series to
be interesting.
If you're looking for a book which will take you from building your
first rocket to your first launch, then this is probably not the
book for you; and I might add, that is not what it was intended to be.
I would have given this book five stars, but I haven't worked all
the projects and can't say they're all error free. This is
important since I've encountered errors in some of the other
books in this series.
Too elementary for the serious hobbyist at any age.......2006-11-24
The evil genius series of electronic hobbyist books tends to be a mixed bag of quality. Sad to say, this is not one of the better books in the series. It is way too elementary for any adult remotely interested in the science behind the hobby. For example, the chapter on rocket math is junior high school level and the chapter on the flight computer was woefully inadequate. The book is also short on explanations in general, and I found the illustrations to be lacking. If you want a really good book on model rockets, might I suggest the updated version of the "Handbook of Model Rocketry" by Stine and Stine. The senior Stine, G. Harry Stine, was a range safety officer at White Sands Missile Range who built and flew various model rockets in the 1950's and then devised a safety code for the activity based on his experience at the range. The instructions and diagrams are very clear, and the authors go the extra mile with technical details that are missing in Harper's book. The following is the table of contents for the Evil Genius book on rockets:
Chapter 1: History of Rocketry
Chapter 2: Rocket Science
Chapter 3: The Model Rocketeer's Workshop
Chapter 4: Model Rocket Stability
Chapter 5: Constructing Model Rockets
Chapter 6: Recovery Systems
Chapter 7: Launching Model Rockets
Chapter 8: Rocket Math
Chapter 9: Model Rocket Photography
Chapter 10: Model Rocket Movie Cameras
Chapter 11: Rocket Mail
Chapter 12: Introduction to the Flight Computer
Chapter 13: Educating with Model Rocketry
Chapter 14: Model Rocket Clubs
APPENDIX A: MODEL ROCKET SAFETY
APPENDIX B: INTERNATIONAL LISTING OF MODEL ROCKET CLUBS
A Good Book for the Experimentor or the Armchair Scientist.......2006-11-19
This is an excellent place for the young evil genius to start thinking about rockets - with one exception.
First the exception. The first project is 'Making Black Powder.' DON'T. Black Powder is extremely sensitive. The slightest spark from a buildup of static electricity and you no longer have black powder, just a boom. Too many people have been killed by black powder to play with it. DON't, just DON't. On the next page he starts talking about commercially available rocket engines. Start here.
The book is a combination of descriptive information along with detailed projects. Perhaps the Evil Genius should start with a couple of kit rockets (such as the FREE model rocket you can order), but then this book will move him along to the next step. If nothing else, the armchair rocketeer will find the book to be fascinating reading.
Expanding your model rocketry horizon ..........2006-10-04
Despite its peculiar title, this book is worthwhile for those who wish to get more out of model rocketry than your average kit-builder. Welcome emphasis is placed on building parts from "scratch" as an alternative to simply buying "off-the-shelf". This approach to the hobby serves as an excellent transitional step from model rocketry to amateur experimental rocketry (AER), for those who later wish to pursue the ultimate in scratch-built rocketry. This book encourages the reader to explore beyond the conventional, through projects such as a self-made wind tunnel, launch controller, rail launcher, rocket cameras, flight computer, apogee sensors and other sensor projects. Details tend to be minimal, although this is likely intentional, leaving the reader to gain more benefits (and rewards) from the projects by using their own resourcefulness. A couple of nice touches to the book are the numerous historical accounts relating to various aspects of rocketry, and the emphasis placed on the importance of math to the rocketry hobby.
The Perfect Rocketry Book.......2006-09-18
As an experienced rocketeer (I participated in the TARC competition last year), I cannot recommend this book highly enough!
The 50 projects are very well thought out and clearly stated.
It will take the rocketeer to the next level of their expertise. I especially enjoyed the 70 pages devoted to creating your own flight computer. Not only do these pages show you how to make a simple computer, but also explain how to create even more complex computer systems.
It is true that some of the information can be found free on the internet, but this book provides a well-organized collection of activities that are SAFE and reliable.
As President of my high school Rocketry Club, I am highly suggesting that all my members read this book. 50 Model Rocket Projects is an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to learn rocketry or who knows rocketry but wants to expand their knowledge.
AN EXCELLENT RESOURCE!!!

All you ever wanted to know..........2007-01-06
This is a handy little overview of project management. I've given it to many, many folks since I first discovered it over 15 years ago. It tells you the basics in a coloring-book style that is easy to understand and remember. It won't get you through your Project Management Professional exam, but if what you need is the equivalent of Cliff Notes for project management, this is the book you need.
