This is an excellent on how to implement lean in a manufacturing facility. The plant leadership at our site has used this book to start a bookclub, reading one chapter a week and reviewing it the next. I wish we would have read this book sooner. It would have help to reduce a lot of frustrations. The book also covers Toyota's leadership structure and suggests how to go about implementing lean on the shopfloor if you are just beginning the journey.

Book description: what's the key message?
While Jeffrey Liker's book The Toyota Way was an examination of the 14 Principles of the Toyota Way, it was not an explicit "how to" guide at a tactical level. This follow up book is intended as the more practical guide to Becoming Lean (to borrow the title of an earlier book written by Liker). The Fieldbook is organized in the framework of Toyota's 4 P's:
* Philosophy
* Process
* People and Partners
* Problem Solving
The book starts first with "philosophy," not lean tools. It develops an important relationship between the two. The book, in its entirety, emphasizes that copying Toyota tools, regardless of how thoroughly, is not enough to become lean. Early chapters talk about defining your company's purpose and philosophy, providing many examples of Toyota's purpose and unique view of their place in society and the world. From there, the Fieldbook guides you through a reasonable progression of lean topics and methods to work with in your own company. While there is no simple linear progression through a lean transformation, the authors address the challenge well in structuring the flow of the book. Typical "early" stages of lean learning and implementation are covered first, including learning how to identify waste, establishing process stability, and developing flow. The book spends more time on organizational culture and management methods, as opposed to tools. The book remains practical and actionable, rather than theoretical.
A strong central portion of the book focuses on developing leaders, how to lead in a lean environment, and how to develop "exceptional" employees. One particular highlight are the detailed examples, including a breakdown of the roles of Group Leaders, Team Leaders, and Team Members in a lean setting, not covered in most lean books.
The book recognizes that companies are not Toyota as a starting point. Rather, they are trying to become a Toyota-like lean organization. There is a chapter on respecting suppliers and managing them as Toyota does. The last sections of the book cover Toyota problem solving and implementation strategies, including a discussion of the pros and cons of different common lean transformation or implementation approaches, including kaizen events and the development of a "Company Production System."
How does it contribute to the lean knowledge base?
This book is a unique compilation of Toyota Production System methods, concepts, and philosophies. There are many adaptable examples of Toyota tools and methods, including Standard Work Combination tables, Cross Training matrices, 5 Why's problem solving analysis, and A3 reports. There are many new case study examples in the book that will be helpful, even to an experienced lean practitioner.
The book is also unique in that it is co-authored by a former Toyota team leader, an American, as opposed to reading an older book by Toyota executive Taiichi Ohno or consultant Shigeo Shingo.
What are the highlights? What works?
The book is very readable and easy to understand. Its layout and format borrows many of the good practices of the "For Dummies" series. You might consider this to be a "Toyota Production System For Dummies" book. There are many callouts with icons indicating "Tips" and "Traps" to look out for in your own lean implementation, to help avoid common lean implementation mistakes or failure modes.
This is very helpful, as the authors realize that it can be difficult work implementing lean. They never talk down to you or make you feel bad that you might struggle with the Toyota Way in your own environment, because you are not Toyota.
Furthermore, co-author David Meier was a group leader at Toyota. Many perspectives on Toyota come from the process or industrial engineering perspective, but the perspective of front-line supervisor is of significant value and often overlooked.
What are the weaknesses? What's missing?
While this is clearly a field book in its application focus, it is less clear how it is connected to companion book, The Toyota Way. The 14 principles of that book are mentioned briefly but are not integrated into this book. The Fieldbook has value as a standalone volume, but those looking for a specific companion to The Toyota Way will be disappointed.
You might be surprised to not find much information about Kanban, a process made famous by Toyota. Although the concept of pull is covered, there is no chapter on Kanban or examples of calculations or Kanban cards. Thankfully, there are many references and other books available on this topic.
How should I read this to get the most out of it?
The book can be read straight through. For an experienced lean practitioner, it can easily be used as a reference book. Topics are well organized and tools are easy to find with a well-documented index. For example, if you want an example of an A3 Report, you will find many pages of explanation about the tool and how to use you. You will also find fully completed examples of the tool. This is extremely helpful and adds to the book's value as a practical reference.
Great addition to Toyota Way but not as good.......2007-05-27
The Toyota Way Fieldbook is excellent and it's a great addition to the Toyota Way. It's hard to write a book as good as the Toyota Way, this book is good, but not as good as Toyota Way.
When I started reading the fieldbook, I was highly dissapointed. The first 200 pages basically just explained the basic lean tools. It's good if you do not know them, but I felt that the book didn't add anything to the existing lean literature. I expected more from Jeff Liker, especially after the excellent Toyota Way.
Part IV of the book starts around page 200 and talks about developing people. Here, for me, the book took a turn and became better the more I continued. (I also immediately ordered the new Toyota Talent book to hope to get more information on this side of Toyota). The organizational structures and training descriptions was very concrete, as I would expect in a fieldbook. Then Part V started around page 300 and it was... excellent. It's about find root causes and continuous learning. Just chapter 14 is worth the whole book. The description of the "therefore" method and it's relationship to the 5why's is very important. (this section talks about how 5why is a method for finding the root cause, but it's just as important to abstract the problem in "the true problem" so that you got more flexibility in ways of solving it).
The last part is about managing the change. The stories are all very nice and concrete. The advise is useful.
I really like this book, especially chapter 14! It gave me, again, new insights in Toyota's way of working and especially it's culture. The stories made it concrete and they were fun to read. Recommended, after you finished the Toyota Way.
Ideal companion for other Lean texts.......2007-04-29
I got this book from a VP of continuous improvement along with a few others that they were using to implement Lean. It is important to note that Lean is the Toyota system/version of JIT, and these terms should not be used interchangeably (i.e. JIT is a subset of Lean). After reading it and taking extensive notes, here's a summary review.
Pro:
-Emphasizes Leader Standard Work as the critical element that all else hinges on and in my view is perhaps the most important lesson from this book
-Describes objectives and Toyota perspective of various tools, going beyond describing tool use that help prevent common misuses of tools, simple as they may be... focuses a great deal of energy on methodology or tool "intent" rather than "results"
-In addition to giving Toyota specific thinking and perspective, reinforces that even an aggressive multiple-year teaching/learning only provides a basic and crude level of Lean skill despite how easy the concepts are... the complexities and difficulties are really rooted in how different the methodology and thought process is
-Specifically calls out "Tips" and "Traps" behind various Lean methods
-Excellent chapter summaries
Con:
-A tempting shortcut for those who have too much work and too little time, wish to learn "the Lean toolkit," or those looking for ready-made recipes. I think that this sort of thinking is a trap which really neglects the greater opportunities Lean will present...
Bottom Line: A must have for the Lean enthusiast, however, I suggest first "The Toyota Way" and then "Creating a Lean Culture" as prerequisite readings. Also, any of the Womack series of texts are also excellent and worth reading as well to add a full and deep understanding of the Lean basics.

I really love this book!! I've read many books about how to run projects, to keep teams motivated, to be an effective leader, and I think this book compiles all of the above, plus it gives you a grounded point of view. There are no promises, only hard work and ways to improve your performance.
I've used some of the recommendations included in chapter 13: How to make things happen and, although is not a guarantee of success, I have accomplished some of my most difficult projects with it and the ones I didn't, at least I know why.

highly practical and thorough coverage.......2007-05-12
Reading this book is almost as good as having a highly experienced mentor help you manage a project. The book provides very thorough coverage with sound, practical advice. There is a good list of reference material as well. I have been a software developer for more than 25 years and have managed several projects and still found I learned a lot from this book. I wish it had been available years ago. The book also provided confirmation for many of my beliefs about which I disagree with my current project manager. I hope to use this book to help convince him to change. I will be managing my own project again soon and plan to use use this book to help me succeed. Every software developer should read this book even if they are not a project manager. My only very slight criticism is that the book is most helpful to software product projects, but I think even internal development projects should be run as this book explains.

Best book I've found on Project Management.......2007-03-14
This is an O'Reilly publication, although it lacks their characteristic animal on the cover. It is a fabulous book. While most Project Management books focus on helping you pass the PMI test, this book is focused on real life and has extensive chapters on dealing with difficult situations and so-called "difficult people".

This book is very basic and appears to be very dated. Several times I had to look at the copyright date to ensure it wasn't that hold. With a copyright date of 2003, I thought it would contain more up-to-date information. If you want very, very basic information, than buy this book. If you are already in warehouse distribution, this book will not help you at all. The advice that is given is so basic and not very helpful.

Book is written using easy to understand terminolgy. Glossary was invaluable tool.
Piasecki is the Man.......2007-01-04
David Piasecki is a very knowledgable fellow. But more importantly, he has the ability to communicate like an average Joe, not some academic.
This book is easy to read, and has lots of funny cartoons anyone dealing with warehousing or inventory can appreciate.
As far as actual content, Piasecki discusses what works, what works better, and the reasoning behind all of this. His many years of experience clearly shine through in this read.
Check out his website too, it has alot of useful information that compliments the book.
Inventory Accuracy in action.......2006-09-21
As a cost analyst for a mid-sized manufacturer, I found this book invaluable for setting up analyses of cycle counts, and it was THE guide for putting together a full physical count process when our parent company demanded it. It's a pleasure to read (yes, this, a book on managing inventory, is a PLEASURE to read!); Piasecki's take on what a physical count is REALLY like is priceless. He really has a complete grasp of what it means to have human beings managing inventory. See his chapter on what machines and humans each do best.

This book is based on lean product development in the automotive world and has some shortcomings when it comes to applying what Toyota does to other industries. However, with Toyota's success lately their are few arguments against not studying how Toyota approaches product development and applying it to our specific industries. I think the hardest thing for most American companies will be having the long-term discipline to implement what Toyota has done.

Although this book is very popular today, the authors offer no new approaches to new product development. Companies should strive to leapfrog Toyota. This is the third book I've read about Toyota and by far the best one. I'm an engineering manager and found dozens of simple, new ideas in this book. This is a very thorough & practical guide to the inside workings of Toyota's PD system. There are many examples and sufficient details that you can easily understand them and also try to implement them in your own organization.

I have recently started to work in product development for the telecommunications industry and this book has been an excellent guide to learn and improve the product development process. The concept of Front Loading the development process is applicable immediately, and the rest of concepts like process flows, waste reduction, standardization, and the Chief Engineer System definitely enhance product development in any industry.
Examples from the automobile industry allows easy understanding on how the development process affects physical elements and a lot of time saving practices provide very useful knowledge.

I recommend this book for anyone considering Lean. I am buying it for all department directors. It gives the good and the bad, not just the good. I believe it will help people avoid making mistakes if they decide Lean is for them. A good overview of what to expect and gives examples average readers can understand. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent book, and essential reading for Lean leadership. It is also a good starting point for any Lean practitioner or anyone taking on a major change effort. Before diving deep into the problem solving tools and systems of TPS, a study of The Hitchhiker's Guide to Lean and the lessons contained within it will give you many tips for your journey. This book is clearly written, and well thought out. Each chapter offers 5 solid things to meditate on and put into practice. The passion and conviction of the authors comes through strongly. What U.S. industry needs are more thinkers and teachers like these.

This book is a must read for any lean practioner. Jamie and Andy discuss how lean can guide all aspects of a business and the principles behind lean. The book covers every thing from kaizen to strategy deployment to accounting. Jamie and Andy break down lean in easy to understand verbiage while explaing the principles as well as discuss pitfalls and successes they have seen in implementing lean.
I can't recommend this book enough. Whether you are just strarting your lean journey or are well established in lean this book is worth the time.
This is the Lean 101 Bible!.......2007-03-15
I am a lean practitioner and have been for many years. I have been responsible for launching lean implementations in companies and am familiar with many challenges such as leadership, cultural change, company commitment, etc. This book provides all the foundational things one must know prior to going into a lean initative. People tend to think it's all about numbers and metrics. But it's also about the psychology of an organization. This book addresses all aspects! I recommend this book and John Shook's "Learning To See" as Lean 101 guides!

I read construction funding, prematurely perhaps, as one of my first ever real estate books - and I loved it! The book takes the reader through several once-real-life scenarios and explains the construction process step by step. I think that both ambitious beginners and more seasoned loan officers and developers would benefit from reading this book.

Very interesting book; very easy to read.

If I had to give a 1-2 day seminar on the subject, this would be a handy handbook. For that purpose, it should be used, not as a general reference on lean manufacturing.

I purchased this handbook to be used as a quick reference guide and as part training aid when I talk to my Clients in the manufacturing sector. It has completely satisfied these requirements and the other factor that appealed was its true "pocket" size.

Delighted with this book. Firstly it's size is great as when you are on the Gemba (Floor) you can have this in your back pocket and referance it when needed. It goes through the various concepts of Lean in an easy format and then explains the techniques. As a Lean BlackBelt myself, it's a great tool to use in every day situations.
Fantastic Little Book.......2006-06-13
This is a fantastic little book on lean manufacturing written by an experienced and knowledgeable industrial engineer. The author's in-depth knowledge on the subject enabled him to distill the critical and important elements of lean manufacturing and convey it in an easy to understand and follow format.
The book has clear definitions and explanations of concepts like JIT, lean manufacturing, waste (over-production, wait time, transportation, processing, inventory, motion and defect waste), value stream mapping, quality at source, cellular manufacturing, production leveling, Kanban and Kaizen, among other useful and interesting concepts.
The book is excellent value for money. It is recommended that one buys it for the whole company if involved in manufacturing operations.

Lincoln is still a leader........2007-10-01
I selected "Lincoln on Leadership" as a biography to use in a graduate educational administration course and I couldn't have chosen a better book. The organization of the book highlighted leadership qualities that Lincoln exemplified and each chapter had a succinct summary of those leadership skills. Lincoln's leadership is applicable to all types of leadership including education.
Leadership During ALL Times.......2007-04-28
Donald T. Phillips used our sixteenth president's wisdom under fire to provide an excellent primer for leadership focused on tough times, but it is as important during good times. When sales are at record levels, employees are happily working long hours, and new prospects are pounding on the doors because of customers' recommendations, is when one needs to be preparing for potential tough times.
Few will go through the meat-grinder which faced President Lincoln, but able leadership during good times will give an organization a firm footing for the mishaps and misfortunes which will affect us all at some point. Focusing on the 'Endeavor' section of the book, Phillips illustrates examples of Lincoln's will, ability, and lack of hesitation in making tough, necessary decisions. Losing a war, being sniped at by those who should be supporters, and struggling with difficult family matters can be paralyzing, but ignoring a personnel issue so as to not rock the boat during a smooth voyage can also be destructive. Phillips points out how "Lincoln often accepted the aggravation and exasperation caused by subordinates if they did their jobs competently", but he also shows how Lincoln could be decisive and tough when his hand was forced. This includes disciplining and firing upper level staff such as cabinet secretaries and commanding generals.
Any review of Lincoln's life would be incomplete without mentioning his use of humor and a unique storytelling ability to make his point. Phillips recounts Lincoln's reason for doing so, which includes these lines: "I often avoid a long and useless discussion by others or a laborious explanation on my own part by a short story that illustrates my point of view." "No, I am not simply a story-teller, but story-telling as an emollient saves me much friction and distress." Oh, if only more of our business and government leaders would use short stories, saving us all some "friction and distress".
The chapter titled "Persuade Rather Than Coerce" explains that Lincoln was smart enough to know that he couldn't do it all by himself, but needed capable leaders who were authorized to make decisions and act on them. His largest problem with military leadership was a gauntlet of generals who were not willing to assume that responsibility. Understanding that influence is a more effective tool of leadership than coercion or orders, he "...preferred to let his generals make their own decisions and hoped that, through his suggestions, they would do the right thing."
That chapter begins with a quote from the first Lincoln Douglas debate: With public sentiment, nothing can fail; without it, nothing can succeed. Consequently he who molds public sentiment goes deeper than he who enacts statutes or pronounces decisions. Looking back at the presidents of my lifetime, it is easy to see which have taken this advice to heart, and have shown success because of it. Likewise, those who have ignored it, and a recent president comes to mind, have had their leadership suffer.
Paraphrasing John C. Maxwell, there is no such thing as `leadership during tough times'; there is only `leadership'. Those fond of history and anyone interested in leadership should read this book.
Great viewpoint on focusing on people.......2007-04-23
This book is one of the best management/leadership books I have ever read. It was giving to me by one of my business school professors who I respect and admire greatly. The book will not disappoint you if you decide to buy it. Worth the time and money!

Excellent and well-worth reading........2007-03-31
This book is well written and will appeal to a very wide range of readers, including but not limited to Lincoln scholars and those interested in leadership. Readers who are interested in history, business, politics and those who just like well-written prose should enjoy this book. As the title states, this book is about Lincoln's leadership style. He is portrayed as a paradigm of an effective leader. The book covers topics such as: his interactions with people, his character, his decisiveness, and his immense skills as a communicator. Each chapter covers a different facet of leadership and how Lincoln typified this feature. At the end of each chapter there is brief discussion of how this applies to current day business and politics. There is also a brief summary list of Lincoln's principles discussed in that chapter. The book itself is brief and you can learn a lot from the way that Lincoln interacted with and led people during the most trying time in America's history.
While the focus of the book is on Lincoln's leadership, I learned quite a bit about the man and the challenges that he faced and how he shaped the subsequent government of the US. This was done in a very interesting manner, which was devoid of the dense details of a history book. I got more from this brief book than from some much more detailed books on the Civil War. The book is replete with Lincoln anecdotes, jokes and parables, all of which enrich the text and get the points across in much the same way Lincoln initially used them to get his points across. The best accolade that I can give this book as that it is making me read more about Lincoln and about leadership.
