4 out of 5 stars Daily Inspiration.......2007-09-12

I bought this book along with another of Melody's. I think she is a very caring and understanding person and this book gives me daily readings to keep up my spirits and know that I am not alone and I can fix my own problems. I wasn't expecting a daily devotional type of book, but I am so glad now that I have it. They say one day at a time.. and right now that's what I'm giving.

2 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-08-03

Not what I expected it to be. More religious than I prefer and definately works with the AA platform which wasn't what I wanted.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-09-30

I bought this CD for use as a relaxation activity in an early childhood classroom for 3 to 5 year old children and it's wonderful. If I could give it more stars, it would have 10! This would be great for your child to listen to at night to help them wind down for bedtime, or in the afternoon for a rest time activity, and it's great for the classroom. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for my 3 yr old!!.......2007-09-25

I have an especially bright but anxious 3 1/2 yr old. I wasn't sure whe was going to take to this cd even after I listened to it. But she LOVES it and goes to sleep every night listening to it! I think it gives her something other than monsters to think about as she is falling asleep. We have been nightmare free wince we got it a week ago!!! I am thinking of making a copy for my 9 month old to listen to in our room as well.. the voice is so soothing and maybe she will like it as too!

5 out of 5 stars Soothing and relaxing for little ones.......2007-09-23

I love these cd's. I got this for my 5yr old because he is highly sensitive. After the daily stresses of (to him) loud noise, ugly smells, crowed class rooms, this cd helped him make it through kindergarden. And now he's enjoying first grade. I don't know what I would of done without Indigo Dreams.

4 out of 5 stars A nice cd.......2007-09-08

My kids and I have listened to this, and it's very relaxing. My 4-yr-old son and 8-yr-old daughter have both been fairly wiggle-free during listening. It's a nice wind-down at the end of the day. Sometimes the speaker seems a little too slow-talking for me, but when I just relax and calm down, it doesn't bug me as much. I very much enjoy relaxation and visualization techniques, and am happy to pass along the benefits to my kids.

5 out of 5 stars Great for 4 year olds and 30 year olds!.......2007-06-22

I bought this for my 4-year-old daughter who is high-spirited and has a hard time settling down at night. She loves this. We keep the CD on "repeat" through the night. That way if she wakes up, she just listens to the CD and it puts her back to sleep. No need to come to Mom and Dad's room! Yay! It's also the only meditation CD that I enjoy, for myself.

Ekhart Tolle's message is simple: living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. And while this message may not seem stunningly original or fresh, Tolle's clear writing, supportive voice, and enthusiasm make this an excellent manual for anyone who's ever wondered what exactly "living in the now" means. Foremost, Tolle is a world-class teacher, able to explain complicated concepts in concrete language. More importantly, within a chapter of reading this book, readers are already holding the world in a different container--more conscious of how thoughts and emotions get in the way of their ability to live in genuine peace and happiness.

Tolle packs a lot of information and inspirational ideas into The Power of Now. (Topics include the source of Chi, enlightened relationships, creative use of the mind, impermanence, and the cycle of life.) Thankfully, he's added markers that symbolize "break time." This is when readers should close the book and mull over what they just read. As a result, The Power of Now reads like the highly acclaimed A Course in Miracles--a spiritual guidebook that has the potential to inspire just as many study groups and change just as many lives for the better. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

It's no wonder that The Power of Now has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 30 foreign languages. Much more than simple principles and platitudes, the book takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, "the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death." Featuring a new preface by the author, this paperback shows that only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment.

5 out of 5 stars Truely transformational - a practical approach to Spirituality.......2007-09-27

I was reading "I am that" by NisargaDatta Maharaj and was thinking about and trying to grasp, what he says - about just being the "witness" and at the right moment, one of my dear friend handed this over to me.
This book explains it. I dont claim that I am realized after reading this, but now I am confident I am on the right path towards the goal.

This is truely a transformational book. This is the practical guide to understand the mysteries behind teachings of great Masters. My approach towards looking at my life, rather towards every moment of my daily routine, is changed. It started answering my questions right from the first page and now I can apply this principle and answer many questions I have been having about stuff like "Why would creating music be transcendental" - 'why does one feel so passionate about his/her job and get satisfaction out of it'. 'why do people become instant heroes in emergency situations' - The answer - 'power of now.'
Read it and apply it in your daily routine and I am sure happiness (the inner one of course) and peace would be yours to keep.
Enjoy.
I would recommend "I am that" - a collection of talks of Shri. Nisargadatta Maharaj, along with this book. You will have no more questions in your life about why things are the way they are.

Wish you the best for your quest.

5 out of 5 stars Keep it Simple.......2007-09-25

Here are some powerful words.

accept always attention becomes between beyond body cannot change come conscious consciousness course create death deep deeply does ego emotion energy even ever fear feel feeling find form free future get give go god happens human ing inner itself know level life light live long longer love may means mind moment need negativity nothing now own pain part past patterns peace people person physical point power presence present problems reality relationship resistance say see self sense situation something space state still suffering surrender take things think thinking thought time true unconscious unconsciousness unmanifested use want without word world yourself

According to Amazon, these are the most commonly used words in one of the most profound books I have ever read, "The Power of NOW," by Eckhart Tolle. Its simplicity appeals to me. In a world gone mad with ritual, my poor little mind needs simplicity!

As I study different spiritual traditions, I am stunned at the shear weight of them. Nothing is ever thrown away! If an old belief is superseded by a new belief, they exist together in mutual conflict. Inconsistency is piled upon inconsistency.

If I were to seriously practice some of ancient traditions, such as kundalini yoga, I would shortly feel imprisoned. Who could possibly become enlightened when there is so much that must be accepted? If enlightenment is the goal, and the path entails letting go of our attachments, then why have so many attachments to carry down the path?

Using kundalini yoga as an example again, I love many of the meditation practices I have learned from teachers in that tradition. What I find cumbersome are the doctrines, beliefs, and traditions surrounding the practices. To me a good meditation practice works because it fits like a comfortable shoe. A shoe does not care what I believe!

I know that not every one is like me. And I know that I secretly believe everyone should be like me. And I know there are those who thrive in structured systems of belief. But by the time I read about the chakras, the nadis, the related astrological signs, and how the stars affect our karma, I want to sit under a tree and quietly meditate! Or I want to dance. Or I want to sing. My poor little head whirls at such a vast amount of knowledge. Please just let me be happy!

I suppose it is human nature to make things complicated. For example, the simple message of Christ is so hidden that one can get lost in a sea of interpretations. And when this happens, rather than sailing the course of love, which Jesus preached, we risk becoming lost in the treacherous waters of doctrines. As for the Four Noble Truths of Buddha, they are now closer to the Four Thousand Obscure Truths. Perhaps it is human nature to make things complicated, but it is my nature to make things simple, which means I am either inhuman or that I will soon complicate my need to make things simple.

But, if I do complicate the simple, I can always read "The Power of NOW" again. And I will be reminded that my beliefs are not the truth. My beliefs are only beliefs. And I will be reminded to breathe and to be still. That is simple.

Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."

4 out of 5 stars Great self-help book........2007-09-18

I enjoyed this book immensely. It's somewhat cerebrally written but not academically so that it's too obtuse. Tolle does a great job of talking about "now" and getting out of your mind and into your life. I'd recommend it for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars The real thing.......2007-09-18

Peaceful and powerful. The audio book version is best. You will know it is the truth when you hear it.

4 out of 5 stars We always knew this....but never realized it........2007-09-11

One of the greatest books ever written.
Timeless wisdom revealed once again.
As Tolle coaxes and leads us to the 'Now', the power of realization strikes us with great intensity.
Truly, only NOW exisits.
This book can change your life !

5 out of 5 stars Alcohol killing you? There is life in this book ; ).......2007-04-26

"Before taking a night-club DJ's job in the 80's writer did not drink; 9 years later on especially grim days my consumption approached a gallon of cheap vodka a day and I could not function. Over the last dozen years of clean & sober living, the "grace" of Almighty God led me to AA, AA's "grace" led me to many new places including this treasured little book (head & shoulders above anything else in its field). "24 Hours a Day" is composed of a short, meditational trilogy for each day of the year, sourced from Hazelden (the world's largest addiction recovery program) and another blessed little book (buy it also from Amazon) titled "God Calling". Concluding, am surprised by the book's "only four star" rating; for me there are not enough stars in the universe to pay it, Hazelden and "AA" sufficient tribute. Succinctly put, if you have a substance abuse problem of any genre "24 Hours" WILL help you beyond words. But if you are like the chap whose impoverished review spoke of "Repetitive magical drivel for people who want to stick in a rut.", likely it WON'T help. You'll need a book on "ATTITUDE" for that. Or put another way, "Sir - did you forget to say no to drugs today?" ; )

3 out of 5 stars good sobriety but heavy for the mornings.......2003-02-24

i picked up this book a little bit ago when my sober living home was using it to run its morning meditation group. i am not a morning person and because of this i found it was hard to wrap my mind around what was written. there are alot of good thoughts for the day but i prefer something a little bit lighter to start my day off with.

Book Description

Yoga Nidra means "Yogic Sleep". It is a deep relaxation in which you leave the waking state, go past the dreaming state, and enter into the deep sleep state, while remaining fully awake and alert. This state of awareness is extremely beneficial, both for releasing stress, and for experiencing the joy of subtler spiritual explorations or experiences.

The voice will systematically guide you to explore your physical body, then move through 61 specific points within the body, and then practice ascending breath awareness along the body and spine. Your attention will be brought to the space between the eyebrows, then to the throat, and finally to the heart center, where you will go deep into stillness and silence, beyond the activities of the mind.

Following the custom of the ancient sages, the depth of Yoga Nidra comes from inner awareness of the levels of your own self, including your body, breath, and the subtler mind, rather than diverting attention throuh music or inner fantasies. This inner exploring through self-awareness is a more refined form of meditation that leads you deeper into the stillness and silence of your own being, while remaining fully awake and aware. The Yoga Nidra methods bring you to a place of awareness where you are able to completely let go of any words, thoughts, images, impressions, or pictures in the mind. You are guided to allow your mind to "empty, empty, empty" though you remain fully awake and clear of mind.

The practices on this CD will gently train your ability to direct your own attention, which is the primary skill in the art of meditation. You will find that you are gradually able to use these methods on your own, without the CD, and the benefits will be with you not only during your practice time, but also during the activities of daily life.

The Yoga Nidra CD has five tracks. The first track is an introduction (8:02 minutes), describing the state of Yoga Nidra and the practices on the CD. The next four tracks move through four sequential practices that are listened to together, so as to form a complete practice of 57:24 minutes (CD is 65:36 minutes in total). These four tracks can also be listened to individually, as complete practices unto themselves, which allows you to have the benefits of practice when less time is available.

After some time of practicing Yoga Nidra, you will naturally find it to be a most enjoyable and spiritually inspiring part of your life.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of a Wonderful Journey.......2007-09-28

I just got my Yoga Nidra CD yesterday. My husband and I put it on last night. The sound quality is very good. The voice is very clean and clear. Unfortunately, we fell asleep before we could really get into the meditation. Actually, he fell asleep and his snoring was not conducive to my meditation! I turned the CD off and tried it again later. Then, I fell asleep within a few minutes.

I thought this morning would be a good time to try again and I must say, I was amazed. I didn't fall asleep, but at one point, I did pass quickly through a "dream." It was quite vivid, but very short. During the first part of the meditation, my mind was very active. The voice would say, "Be aware of your forehead." I was aware of my forehead and within a split moment, I was aware of something else! The voice said, "Be aware of your nostrils." I was aware of my nostrils and the breath going in and out, then suddenly I was aware of the bills I had to pay today. Towards the end of my meditation, though, I noticed the stray thoughts started to become fewer and I was able to focus longer on the body part I was supposed to be focusing on. I made it to the 10 minute silent part, the last track, of the cd before my dog started scratching on my bedroom door. I was a bit disappointed at not being able to make it through the entire CD, but what I did do had a very calming effect on the rest of my day. It wasn't a sluggish calm, but a refreshing calm. My muscles felt relaxed, as well as my mind. I can't wait to try again tomorrow. This time, I'll bring the dog in the room with me, so she won't scratch on the door. Maybe she'll make it to Nidra, too!

Book Description

The practice of meditation takes us on a fabulous journey into the gap between our thoughts, where all the advantages of a more peaceful, stress-free, healthy, and fatigue-free life are available, but which are simply side benefits. The paramount reason for daily meditation is to get into the gap between our thoughts, and make conscious contact with the creative energy of life itself. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer explains the soul-nourishing meditation technique for making conscious contact with God, which the ancient masters have told us about.

You have the potential to be an instrument of the highest good for all concerned and to be a literal miracle worker in your own life. No person, government, or religion can legitimately claim to do this for you. “In fact,” says Dr. Dyer, “I agree with Carl Jung who said, ‘One of the main functions of formalized religion is to protect people against a direct experience of God.’” When you master getting into the gap and staying there for prolonged segments of meditation, and experience what you bring back to the material world, you will know your answer to the question: “Why meditate?”

4 out of 5 stars This is a nice meditation.......2007-08-01

I love Dr. Wayne Dyer's work. He is so helpful and full of insite. I love this meditation book, and have found it very helpful. I love the book and CD combo. My only complaint, and it's not really a complaint, is that, at first, his meditation, was to me, a bit disruptive. When you try to meditate with him, it took me a time or too to get completely comfortable with his voice and allow it to be relaxing to me as well, but it wasn't that big of deal, just different.

I almost gave this five stars, and maybe it deserves that instead of the four I attributed to it, because I have found it a very helpful meditation (especially because I've never meditated before - it's great for beginners).

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL FO R MEDITATION! SOOTHING AND RELAXING!.......2007-06-21

A great mediation CD, which is why I bought this on Amazon in the first place. I own about 7 CD's by Dr. Dyer and all are wonderful. His soothing voice and thoughts are so helpful to change negative thinking into positive thinking! I would suggest Dr. Dyer's CD's, this one or any of his CD's to anyone wanting to make a positive change in their life!

I thought this was a little scary. The background made me jumpy instead of sleepy and I was not willing to give this the amount of time recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, relaxing, and inspirational!.......2007-09-28

I saw The Secret DVD and thought that this would be a good way to listen to and absorb the principles of The Law of Attraction, so I downloaded the mp3 version. I've been listening to it on the bus ride in to work every morning, on my walk at lunchtime, and while taking a hot bath in the evening. I've noticed that every time I listen to it I hear new things, or rather, different parts of it seem to affect me more deeply each time I listen to it. All in all I find it very relaxing - I have an extremely stressful job and I find listening to this relaxes me and calms me down, and it restores my faith in God and the goodness of the universe! Whenever I find myself feeling negative and down, I can listen to this and find myself feeling positive and expecting miracles again, which I think is the whole point of The Secret! This recording has exceeded my expectations in every way and I highly recommend it.

Book Description

For millennia, Buddhists have enjoyed the limitless benefits of meditation. But how does it work? And why? The principles behind this ancient practice have long eluded some of the best minds in modern science. Until now.

In this groundbreaking work, world-renowned Buddhist teacher Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche invites us to join him in unlocking the secrets behind the practice of meditation. Working with neuroscientists at the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior, Yongey Mingyur provides clear insights into modern research indicating that systematic training in meditation can enhance activity in areas of the brain associated with happiness and compassion. He has also worked with physicists across the country to develop a fresh, scientifically based interpretation of the Buddhist understanding of the nature of reality.

With an infectious joy and insatiable curiosity, Yongey Mingyur weaves together the principles of Tibetan Buddhism, neuroscience, and quantum physics in a way that will forever change the way we understand the human experience. Using the basic meditation practices he provides, we can discover paths through everyday problems, transforming obstacles into opportunities to recognize the unlimited potential of our
own minds.

With a foreword by bestselling author Daniel Goleman, The Joy of Living is a stunning breakthrough, an illuminating vision of the science of Buddhism and a handbook for transforming our minds, bodies, and lives.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for anyone.......2007-09-20

This book provides some of the most clearest and accessible descriptions of meditation, awareness, consciousness, the nature of the mind, and practical application I've ever read. Buddhism in general, and meditation in particular, are much misunderstood in the West, even by longtime spiritual practitioners. The author clarifies much of th common misconceptions. He writes in a clear, light-hearted and very engaging style. I recommend this book to absolutely anyone intersted in self-cultivation, whether they follow this particular path (Tibetan Buddhism) or not. Of particular interest to those who like to bridge the gap between science and spirituality. Destined to become a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, meditation made accessible..........2007-09-09

Simply the most accessible, least intimidating introduction to medidation ever written. Written with the spiritual layman clearly in mind without, however, dumbing down the recommended spiritual practices. Relentlessly upbeat and encouraging in tone. A must-read for anyone even remotely interested in practical, effective spiritual proactices regardless of readers' respective religious denominations or lack thereof. An amazing, long overdue book.

5 out of 5 stars Learn how to meditate and live in the moment.......2007-09-03

I am the sort of person who has a HARD time just sitting still and being quiet-let alone meditate! This book was the first book that made the thought of meditating actually easy and possible for someone like me to calm my mind, be present, embrace quiet time with myself and learn to live more calmly and peacefully. I absolutely adore my life but I was filling it up with busy stuff and forgetting about how powerful being alone with me and my thoughts can be to create the life I want-this book reminded me and showed me how to do this.

5 out of 5 stars Live in Joy.......2007-09-03

These pages sing with wisdom from the voice of the Happy Monk as Yongey is fondly called; his humorous compassionate vignettes will also have you smiling. He is a wonderful youthful story teller for modern day using his experience about Tibetan Buddhism, science and the human condition, woven like the humble master he his with the ability to help and heal others. This book is for the practitioner and non-practitioner alike but after reading it you must practice! He busts the myths surrounding meditation from a life of having done so with a host of stops and starts and having guided others in the process He reminds one that "The expectations you bring to meditation are often the greatest obstacles you encounter"

His description of emptiness as infinite possibilities, neuronal plasticity, a process to unlearn the habit of fear and affirmation of the biological basis for kindness are just some of the realizations herein to help us live in active hopefulness. His conviction of these and many life enhancing ways are spelled out for us in almost Hemmingway simplicity such that you too will find many jewels and joy herein.

Let me end this with an ancient prayer that Yongey shares with us:

May all sentient beings have happiness
And the cause of happiness.
May all sentient beings be free
From suffering and the causes of suffering.
May all sentient being have joy and the causes of joy.
May all sentient beings remain in great equanimity,
Free from attachment and aversion.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully clear.......2007-08-30

Mingyur Rinpoche is, among other qualities, the personification of clarity, and this book is just a further expression of that fact. If you know any cynics or rationalists who 'poo-poo' meditation then get them to read this, it might help.

In his follow-up to Full Catastrophe Living--a book in which he presented basic meditation techniques as a way of reducing stress and healing from illness--here Jon Kabat-Zinn goes much more deeply into the practice of meditation for its own sake. To Kabat-Zinn, meditation is important because it brings about a state of "mindfulness," a condition of "being" rather than "doing" during which you pay attention to the moment rather than the past, the future, or the multitudinous distractions of modern life. In brief, rather poetic chapters, he describes different meditative practices and what they can do for the practitioner. The idea that meditation is "spiritual" is often confusing to people, Kabat-Zinn writes; he prefers to think of it as what you might call a workout for your consciousness. This book makes learning meditation remarkably easy (although practicing it is not). But it also makes it seem infinitely appealing. --Ben Kallen

5 out of 5 stars A stellar example of the meaning of the word "excellence.".......2007-10-05

If you are interested in spirituality and/or meditation and are looking for a book that is both deep and clear, this is the book to read. You will find that the book is worth several book on the same subject by other people -- and it does it in an articulate, elevated, succint, no-fluff manner that will impress the heck out of you as few books ever will. I must ad a warning, more about the subject matter than about the book per se: Not everyone is ready to assimilate its contents (or any other equally serious meditation book's content, for that matter). The saying that you have to be ready for something in order to understand it applies very much in this case. I can imagine that it could be taken as too ethereal by some people -- those who are not ready. You would need to have lived and realized that there are matters of the soul that you need to take care of to receive its message. But if you are genuinely thirsty about spiritual matters: order it right away! This makes what we normally take as "Eastern" concepts accessible to an educated Western mind, and you realize that there is no need to think of it as Eastern or buddhist or use any label at all. I am really thankful for this book. You will be too.

5 out of 5 stars Wherever You Go, There You Are.......2007-09-28

This can be a life changing book. It clearly outlines the concepts and methods of awareness meditation. I keep a copy on hand to give to people who paths I cross who appear to be lost in the happenings of daily life or those who are suffering major crisis. Whenever it is best to stop the world and get off. If only for a breath.

it's easy to meditate when the book puts you to sleep. oh yeah, don't forget to send more money for the tapes. must be so you can tape your eyes open while reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Book Title Says It All!.......2007-09-16

I have read several of Kabat-Zinn's works and find they are terrific self-helps! "Wherever You Go . . ." is a short, cogent helper to enable the reader to break out of the rut and look at life from a different position. The book is non-denominational and not dogmatic! Any person of any faith or atheist can find the text helpful and instructional. There are eastern philosophical references and some of the meditational technique is based on centuries old practices & techniques. This is one of the books that helped me change my life and resolve some old internal issues. It has also helped my play in Tai Chi Chuan. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars superb read and life guide for non-meditators like me.......2007-09-12

Doesn't matter if you meditate or not - this book is a great tool on finding that tranquil balance point as you fly through life. Stressed out? Read this book. No time? Read this book. Worried about deciding in getting this book? Read this book.

On my top 9 list.

Book Description

Perhaps no other person has done more to bring mindfulness meditation into the contemporary landscape of America than Jon Kabat-Zinn. Th rough a number of research studies, and through Kabat-Zinn's pioneering work at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he is founder of its world-renowned Stress Reduction Clinic, mindfulness is finally being recognized as a highly effective tool for dealing with stress, chronic pain, and other illnesses. Today, with a four-part home training course, Jon Kabat-Zinn offers listeners the definitive mindfulness meditation practice on CD. "We are not trying to actively achieve a state of deep relaxation—or any other state for that matter—while practicing mindfulness," he teaches. "But interestingly, by opening to an awareness of how things actually are in the present moment, we often taste very deep states of relaxation and well-being—of both body and mind." Join the bestselling author of Coming to Our Senses (Hyperion, 2005) and Wherever You Go, There You Are (Hyperion 1995) to develop and deepen your personal mindfulness practice, and to taste the universal aspects of stillness, clarity, wisdom, compassion, and well-being that Guided Mindfulness Meditation offers.

The purpose of meditation is to let go, not to listen to music. Accept everything, let your thoughts and feelings escape as quickly as they enter. There is no enjoyment in meditation, per se. Ultimately, you will not be disturbed, when you have mastered meditation, you will have learned to accept all things as they come in whatever form they arrive, and in a state of relaxation and "mindfulness" let them pass just as easy. We all fight daily with noises and feelings and pains and distractions. For 10,15,45, or 60 minutes you will have made a conscious choice to accept that your spirit is your soul and there is nothing but peace and harmony here and there. The enjoyment will be an effect of peace within, but is actually another distraction. Jon Kabat-Zinn rocks! But sometimes it's difficult to convey what one feels and knows to another in writing, or even in speaking for that matter. Sometimes It is the listener who has the difficulties. This and Jon's book may not have communicated messages well, but there is truth to be found for all searchers.

4 out of 5 stars Good for revitalizing your practice but you might need to buy the book too........2007-05-25

I was almost put off buying this set by some negative reviews here, but I enjoy his books very much and find JK-Z's approach to mindfulness interesting and imaginative so, after much research, I bought this set. (FWIW, I think his voice is great. If you do a search for the author you can hear free audio clips on many sites.)

I've done some meditation before and was looking for guided meditations because I felt my practice had gone a bit stale. This set has helped me to achieve what I wanted - to refresh my commitment to making meditation a regular part of my life.

So far I've only worked through the Body Scan CD - this is very relaxing, almost too relaxing as I often fall asleep (totally cheating). I'm pleased with the first CD, but there are two points worth mentioning:

1. At 45 mins, these guided meditations are looong, and JK-Z recommends that you do these meditations every day.

2. I wish I'd known that this set on its own is not a full program. The set is described as a 'complete mindfulness program' but when you buy the set and read the liner notes, it says the yoga postures are outlined in his book Full Catastrophe Living. There are no diagrams in the CD liner so you've no idea what the poses are supposed to look like and have to rely entirely on the audio. I've listened to the yoga CD to see if it sounds feasible but haven't 'done' it yet.

I've heard good things about Full Catastrophe Living and, sure, I'd love to read it sometime. However I think omitting the posture illustrations from the notes and just referring you to another book is a bit... off. It was probably a commercial decision taken by the publisher rather than the author, and to be fair, he does describe the poses without referring you to page 72, etc. But I think it should be clearer that the CD was designed to be used in conjunction with the book so you have that information when you buy. Either that or include the illustrations as a courtesy to people who only buy the CD set.

2 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-03-22

I know that Jon Kabat-Zinn has a tremendous amount of knowledge to share however it did not come through for me in this CD collection. The pacing of the movement sequences is very slow and the voice quality is somewhat distracting. Based on the title of the CD's I was under the impression that there would be more information about meditation techniques, however the majority of the information presented is a very gentle guided yoga practice. Somewhat disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Useful mixture of practices, but not complete in itself..........2007-01-29

It well known that Jon Kabat-Zinn is one of the biggest names in meditation instruction and has done much to give the field academic credibility and validation. His work is valuable and this CD is no exception. However, it seems to be overly ambitious and incomplete without other information to augment it. At the least, you need his book FULL CATASTROPHE LIVING to go along with it.

For context, I am a former research scientist and taught physiology in a university and was a biochemist for Merck. I have a good background in yoga, meditation and have done graduate work in Integral Psychology which studies psychology within the context of the world's wisdom traditions. I also teach meditation as part of my living including using biofeedback and other western aids to learning these concepts. This context will help you to judge the merit of my interview and the point of view I'm writing it for.

One thing I like about this CD is that in a sense it is one stop shopping. In one package, you get a Body Scan Meditation, A thorough Mindfulness Meditation methodology and some basic yoga instruction. This is a lot to get in one package and usually you don't get a Body Scan Meditation along with a Mindfulness practice in the same set. All of these meditations and the yoga instruction is useful, but while technically accurate Jon Kabat-Zinn doesn't have the most soothing voice, there was little though to music of any aesthetic dimension which helps one to enter various mind states and there is a bit of a clinical feel the whole series.

With respect to the yoga instruction, I think this information is useful for someone who has studied at least a little bit with a teacher or who has attended classes. A lot of yoga has to do with body awareness and without a teacher to point out the things you think you are doing right, but are unaware of you can keep reinforcing bad habits or at worse hurt yourself. Also, giving yoga instruction via a book or audio CD is not the best way to learn it. It's highly visual and requires someone to look at what you are doing in three dimensions. However, if this gets people started with a yoga practice and curious about learning more, I'm all for it. Besides some classes or lessons, however, you may also want to explore a beginning yoga book such as BACK CARE BASICS or 30 ESSENTIAL YOGA POSES by Judith Lasater. The first book is written by a physician and Iyengar practioner and has a lot of good hints on how not to get hurt. The latter is a great introduction for beginners and can almost stand alone in it's well written descriptions and safety tips.

I agree with the other reviewers that the meditations are an ideal length for long time practice. Beginners may find this a bit overwhelming, but they augment their work with shorter more soothing meditation audios such as Jack Kornfield's BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO MEDITATION. This CD is done from a Western Buddhist perspective, but Kornfield also is a Western clinical psychologist and does not push any religious agenda to hard.

There are some comments in other reviews about a Buddhist orientation in this meditation set by Jon Kabat-Zinn. While I think this is true, I don't see that he is pushing a religious agenda. It just happens to be a fact that the Buddhists have been studying the nature of mind and experimenting with meditation for thousands of years. There are many writing about it within this tradition and they have a lot to tell us about what works and what doesn't. I have found this to be validated by my own experience.

While this set is a good start for those beginning a practice, I would also consider one or both of the following books. First, BREATH BY BREATH by Rosenberg. This is an excellent, thorough and very readable introduction to a variety of meditation techniques in the Buddhist tradition. You don't have to be a Buddhist to benefit from them, however. If your desire is to go even deeper, then MINDFULNESS WITH BREATHING by Buddhadasa Bhikkhu will pick up where BREATH BY BREATH leaves off and go into more fine points that will help you to refine your attention even more and go deeper.

One component of full stress reduction program that I feel is missing from these recordings is the potential health and stress reduction benefits of loving-kindness meditation. This affects heart rate variability, the reduction of the chronic stress hormone cortisol and the production of the anti-aging hormone DHEA. It is now a proven fact that the heart indirectly affects the brain and a lot of new research on this has been appearing in the Journal of Cardiology and others. You can get an introduction to this whole area by reading the book HEART MATH or you can explore loving-kindness meditation without reading up on the medical benefits. If you wish to take a very western approach, then the program FREEZE FRAMER is an excellent investment! If you want to just get an introduction to this technique Shinzen Young has a set of five meditations including loving-kindess which is inexpensive and good. Salzberg also has written a book called Loving-Kindess from a Buddhist perspective and there is an inexpensive audio program by her and Goldstein called INSIGHT MEDITATION.

Another practice that I think is particulary useful to Westerner's, but missing from this program is walking meditation. This done VERY WELL in the INSIGHT MEDITATION series offered above. However, what Zinn offers that others don't is a well-rounded program for life time change. While I've made a lot of comments and suggestions above, I am not knocking this series. It is an ambitious endeavor and Zinn does a great job of covering a lot of ground. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this audio set, but at a minimum I would augment it with FULL CATASTROPHE LIVING and perhaps some of the other resources I mentioned above.
