Save your money! Way overpriced!.......2004-10-24
You can get information like this for free online. Author has no degree or credentials in this field other than she likes to profit from writing about it. There are better books priced more reasonably you can buy.
MUST HAVE... MUST READ... for any Investor.......2003-05-26
This book covers EVERYTHING. In DETAIL. The hardest part about investing is that if you have little to no experience, you have no idea what questions to ask or what to legitimately expect. And when it's YOUR MONEY on the line it's best to know what to expect and to be prepared. This book is what every investor needs. It provides authoritative, comprehensive, and detailed information on how to invest successfully. It has no radical or wreckless financial strategies. This book covers everything. It covers; how to evaluate the professionals and their advice, to investing effeciently with regards to taxes, to family financial planning, to evaluating a stock, bond, annuity, or mutual fund on your own. The only gap in this book is that it does not cover nor touch on real estate investing. But, I am sure the author refrained from that topic as it is not where her expertise and experience lays. But EVERYTHING ELSE was covered thoroughly to the level every investor should demand.
Excellent!.......2003-05-01
Easily the best and most practical investment book I have ever read, the "The Investing Bible" focuses on the juncture of personal finance and corporate finance. Ms. O'Shaughnessy has an easy-to-follow writing style and includes a plethora of other references, from websites to phone numbers to competing investment books. This book is good for a straight-through read as well as a reference.
O'Shaughnessy Bibles are Must-Haves.......2002-08-04
Lynn O'Shaughnessy has written two books, 'The Investing Bible' and 'The Retirement Bible,' that complement each other and provide the reader with all of the vital information necessary for making sound financial decisions. The books are written with such clarity and consistency that I have discarded five others on similar subjects because they could not compare with these. I've given copies of both books to my daughter who has joined a surgery practice and needs to become more financially astute. I hope the author will update these two superb texts periodically.
Great Investing Book!.......2002-04-30
Sure glad that I stumbled across this book. After overinvesting in tech stocks during the bull market, I decided to invest a bit more conservatively. However, I knew little about bonds, which I always found boring and intimidating. The Investing Bible was great at providing the basics of bond investing. I especially liked the section on the fairly new inflation-fighting (TIPS) and I Saving Bonds. I also appreciated the author's excellent bond fund suggestions in one of her mutual fund chapters. It made my job easier.

Well-written and easy to follow.......2007-05-19
The book may have been written 5 years ago but the principles of investing still apply today. The book is detailed, easy to follow and a worthy read. Anyone interested in retiring will benefit from reading this book. I am using the book to make sure that I am ready when retirement age catches up with me.
Much Information is very out of date / no longer accurate.......2007-04-22
Much of the information is out-dated. Many of the financial products referred to have changed alot over the years. This is true particulary about Variable Universal Life Insurance, as well as Variable Annuities. These products have greatly improved over the last 5 years, and much of the information in this book does not apply to the newer products.
The author is not licensed for insurance, not securities licensed, not an investment advisor, and is not a CFP. Therefore she does not have any clients. People who just write books can write almost whatever they want, and are not held to the same standards as licensed professionals. You should be careful of the advice you get from people who only make a living by writing books and articles, and are not licensed professionals.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME !!.......2006-08-08
Out of date and poorly written. Might be suited for a middle school class.
A bit out of date but useful for basic info........2006-07-15
Good basic information on various financial topics such as bonds, equities, 401k, pension, etc. But examples provided are out of date.
Information I could understand.......2006-06-28
Lynn O'Shaughnessy's book Retirement Bible was informative and helpful as I plan for my retirement. It was in a format that even I could understand. I appreciated her help on buyer beware. I will probably hire a good financial advisor to assist and this book has educated me, so when I do interview advisors I hope they will be ready for all my questions.

Fixed-income investments will never be as sexy as the day's hottest stock or a mutual fund focusing on the market sector du jour. But their very stability, combined with the equilibrium they provide when the Dow and the NASDAQ start bouncing around like 6-year-olds on a sugar high, are exactly why savvy investors count on them to round out their portfolios. Marilyn Cohen's The Bond Bible offers an unambiguous look at this once-arcane world, which--like much relating to investing--has become considerably less mysterious and immeasurably more accessible with the advent of the Internet. Cohen, president of a capital management firm, fully explains everything from income streams and the Treasury yield curve to the pluses of federal agency bonds and the negatives of high-yield issues. In simple terms, she also addresses advanced strategies such as leveraging, credit rating agencies, and insurance, bond funds and unit trusts, and nontraditional vehicles such as those tied to rock & roll royalties. Exactly how much of your portfolio should be devoted to bonds is a personal choice based on individual circumstances. Once you determine that, however, this book will help you reach an informed decision on what to buy, where to obtain it, and how to manage what you've got. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Whatever your age, income or total assets, bonds belong in your portfolio. A symbol of security, bonds have long had a place in any well-rounded portfolio. As millions of baby boomers shift their focus from the lure of capital appreciation to the necessity of capital preservation, bonds are moving from a supporting role to the spotlight. Many individual investors, however, know precious little about them. Marilyn Cohen, one of the nation's best known columnists and commentators on the bond market, demystifies bond investing and offers a shopper's guide to finding great bond buys and a master blueprint for building a winning personal bond portfolio. Packed with facts, real-world examples, and savvy advice, The Bond Bible covers:
The right bonds-to-stocks ratio for a sound portfolio How to turn a bond investment from a safety net into a money-maker How to identify a genuine bond bargain How to determine which "store" gives the best value for different kinds of bonds The pitfalls of the bond market and how to avoid them The lowdown on bonds and taxes How to know when to sell a bond and for the best price The scoop on the latest trends, including on-line bond investing

How to Sell this Book.......2007-09-09
If you search Google for "When to Sell a Bond", the only book that comes up is this one, so I bought it. Unfortunately, it really does not describe this at all, only to sell when "Things Go Bad" or "there has been a good run-up"...so I plan to re-sell this book... otherwise if your looking for basic bond concepts and ideas this book is okay.
disapointment.......2005-07-18
I would suggest that any reader wishing to learn about bonds in any detail other than the most simplistic, will be utterly disappointed. It was a waste of money, if I may be so blunt.
Malcolm Yellon.
One of the Best Books on Bonds Out There.......2005-01-26
You've heard the old mantra: Diversify, Diversify, Diversify -- but have you actually heeded that advice? Until I read this book, I had no real concept of what bonds could do for my portfolio. To me, bonds were boring, stale, stagnant, and, well, really couldn't hold a candle to the potential double digit returns stocks and mutual funds could produce. Why would I even bother?
Marilyn Cohen takes you by the hand and walks you through the often convoluted terms (i.e. rate to maturity, convertible bonds, laddering, callability, etc.) and explains them in easy to understand terms with practical examples. Don't let that deter those of you that are experienced bond traders -- there are things in here for you too.
After reading this, I feel a lot more comfortable adding bonds to my portfolio, as well as talking about them with investment professionals. There's a lot of potential out there in the fixed income field if you know what you're looking for. At this point, I know enough to adequately diversify my portfolio.
Stocks are not enough..........2003-03-05
My name is Bond. Bond Bible. All jokes aside, bonds have been sorely underestimated. So many people forget that bond holders are creditors. So that when a company folds, shareholders lose out, but most often times bond holders get paid out. Ms. Cohen pulls no punches and is solid in her review of the bond world. I even like her inclusion of "Bowie" Bonds, the rock and roll bonds that were founded several years ago.
In all her talk I found her discussion light on leveraged bonds. Bond futures are also a viable means to enter this fixed income investment. I should know I've been doing it for 11 years.
That aside this is a one of kind book that no modern investor can do without.
The Title Gets it Right........2002-11-23
"The Bond Bible" is a solid primer on bonds and bond trading for those who are not financial services professionals. Interest in fixed income investing has risen dramatically with the recent vicissitudes in the equity markets, but wise investors already had a portion of their portfolio assets in debt securities. Marilyn Cohen cites the rule of thumb that an investor should have a fixed income component equal in percentage to their age -- and while not an advocate of "rules of thumb" in general -- I agree. To steal a phrase from Warren Buffett -- it's often more important what you don't lose than what you make! The last two years in the equity markets have demonstrated the value of proper asset allocation, but before charging off to reallocate your investments into fixed income, read "The Bond Bible." A well managed bond element in your portfolio can reward you with income, capital appreciation, AND a return of principal. You won't see that in equities.
Book Description
Written by professional equities trader, Jeff Cooper, this best-selling manual teaches traders how to day-trade and short-term trade the best moving stocks. Jeff's strategies identify daily the ideal stocks to trade and point out the exact entry and protective exit point. Most trades risk 1 point or less and last from a few hours to a few days.
Among the strategies taught are:
* Stepping In Front Of Size -- You will be taught how to identify when a large institution is desperately attempting to buy or sell a large block of stock. You will then be taught how to step in front of this institution before the stock explodes or implodes. This strategy leads to gains from 1/4 point to 4 points within minutes.
* 1-2-3-4s -- Rapidly moving stocks tend to pause for a few days before they explode again. You will be taught the three day set-up that consistently triggers 4-15 point gains within days!
* Expansion Breakouts --Most breakouts are false! You will learn the one breakout pattern that consistently leads to further gains. This pattern alone is worth the price of the manual!
* Creating The Daily Hit List -- You cannot make money in stocks that are not moving! You will learn the powerful method that identifies which stocks to trade on a daily basis. You will be taught how to recognize which stocks are rapidly moving and which set-ups to use to trade them. This knowledge assures you of being in the correct stocks everyday.
* Also, you will learn how to trade market explosions (Boomers), how to trade secondary offerings, how to trade Slingshots, and you will learn a number of other profitable strategies that will make you a superior trader.

STUDY, STUDY AND MORE STUDY.......2006-08-20
Obviously, this books is now several years old, but it has not lost its effect on my thinking and trading, especially since Jeff uses funny methaphores for his setups. Maybe one can recognize several by different names, but nevertheless, his names stick in my mind. Personal favorite: 1-2-3 pullbacks plus one day. To re-emphasize the setups, I would suggest to subscribe to his swing/day trading service (at least in the beginning). Well worth the initial investment.
People have compared this book to Streetsmarts a lot, which I find negative and not correct (except for Larry Connors original involvement as a publisher).
All in all, I would call Hit and Run definately a classic to own.
Good!.......2003-11-05
the beautifulst book that I have never read, simple and operating sin that is outside production

Results are bad.......2003-02-13
I do not recommend this book. I went ahead and bought the book and read it. He claims it's the "trader's bible". He does provide ENTRY strategies as well as stops for these entries. He however, spends very little time saying anything useful about money management which is a very important aspect of any trading system. If this was not bad enough and you are smart enough to make your own money management scheme using his entries, you really can not do it, because he DOES NOT provide exit strategies! That is correct, he says it himself that his exits are completely discretionary (page 137). In any event, I went ahead and programmed all but two of this entry strategies (2 of them could not be done since they would require tick data and secondaries info to test them which I did not have - nor was I about to invest getting this data to test his strategies after seeing the bad results I got with the other entry strategies). Since he did not provide exit strategies, I tested several variations with each: exiting the next day at the open, exiting 2, 3, 4, 5 days after the signal. I also tested exiting randomly within the next 1 to 10 days. I did this testing to see if his entry strategies had any merit by themselves. I will not get into describing in detail the results for each. However I will say that NON of his entry strategies are worth investing in, because they make very little money if any at all. Those that did make some money made it when traded over MANY MANY trades (tested over 1500 stocks and averaged 4 trades a day). However, the statistical advantage was so little for winners that by the time you put some commission charge and some slippage (all his entries are stop based) you will definitively reduce the value of your account. Most likely you will just be feeding your brokerage house in the best case. In summary, the entry strategies I tested have no real trading benefit, he provides no money management scheme nor trade exit scheme - so it is not a trading system or strategy. He is really only selling useless entry signals. ... Using a absolute point value seems very "beginner" to me. If this guy is a professional trader and makes money, he is not using these entry signals unless his discretionary exit criteria makes up for his useless entries. I find that his entries are as useful as just entering randomly into the market place. Maybe his business is selling this expensive book to patsies such as myself. I hope you do not become the next one.
A Complete Insight Into Hit and Run Trading.......2002-10-03
If you haven't already read this, you're missing out on something that has spring-boarded the career of thousands of traders. This is Jeff Cooper's best-selling first book that has been revered by the trading community since it was first published in 1996.
The name "Hit and Run" is appropriate as Jeff's style is to enter and exit trades on the same day. Years of experience have taught him that it is better to take profits home than risk things going awry by holding on too long. The contents of this book are loaded with daytrading strategies that have been proven to work. The entire trading process is covered from selecting the right stocks to timing the best entries and exits.
Getting to the heart of the battle, Jeff discusses over a dozen tactics he uses to capture movement in individual stocks. Every method is illustrated with real examples. Use of price patterns in conjunction with ADX and DI readings are the primary sources for the decision-making. As Jeff says, "not all breakouts are created equally." After watching the same processes play out over and over, Jeff has his craft down to a science. Specific rules for entering long or short are laid out very clearly, leaving little room for hesitation. Effective uses of trailing stops are also discussed to ensure profits are maximized.
Every one of Cooper's strategies is designed to take full advantage of specific situations that tend to repeat themselves in the market. Expansion Breakouts, 180s, Boomers, and Lizards are trademarked patterns that have stood the test of time. Each chapter is structured to keep the big picture in mind while giving the intricacies of daily setups strict attention to identify high probability entries. Gauging behavior around the 50-day moving average may never be the same after reading these methods.
Nothing is ever perfect in the markets, so it is important to have a good understanding of how things really work. Cooper's formulas for identifying risk-adverse setups are brilliantly simple, but it's his wisdom and experience that will help a new trader grasp the principles necessary to make his or her own decisions. One chapter is devoted to Cooper's trading journal so the reader can get a feel for what the business is all about. You will find reading this book is like being given a code to unlock opportunity in the market. Though it is important to keep in mind there is no substitute for discipline and hard work.
To quote Jeff, "This is not an easy game, especially when a major market move (like the bull market which began in 1982) ends. There are probably fewer full-time professional traders in this country than there are professional athletes. You must be prepared to work as hard and to be as persistent as a professional athlete to become truly successful."
My top choice for daytrading strategies.......2002-03-26
How can I describe this? I am completely floored by the number of simple, effective strategies that are in this book. When my friend recommended this to me, I was skeptical because the book was published so long ago (1996). After borrowing his copy and using the Stepping In Front Of Size strategy, I was happily surprised to find a gaggle of profitable opportunities. Out of guilt, I ended up buying the book (also my friend demanded his copy back) and have not had one regret since. I only make this point because I was so skeptical of the merits of this book before I bought it. I hope that some of you out there don't make the same mistake I did in initially dismissing the value of the strategies it contains.

How To Be A Successful Trader.......2001-07-01
There is a great deal of information that you have to know to be a successful trader and investor in the stock market. Doug Sutton is an extremely successful trader and an excellent teacher and brings all the important basic information together in an easy to understand format about how to research stocks and equity options and make successful trades. This includes detailed explanations of the important fundamentals of a stock and what they mean, a good discussion of the technical indicators, cycles of stocks, a discussion of sectors and trading on news about a stock including what news is important and the timing of the news. Also, he tells you how to find a good broker and the role of the market makers. He thorougly discusses Covered Calls, Spreads and Naked Puts giving step by step reasons and rules for entering these trades. He tells you how to "stop the bleeding" when the trade goes against you. Focusing your trading activities and balancing your portfolio and trades is a major part of his book. There are many other topics discussed in his book, and I have only hit the highlights. I have read many books on trading, and this one is definitely a must for the beginning trader and the not so novice trader who wants to increase his knowledge and perfect his trading style and skills.
Mr. Sutton, a great teacher.......2001-05-28
I don't know anything about the book other than a brief description but if the book is written like he teaches it is a winner.

From A to Z.......2003-02-21
each chapter give you a step to start an online Investment
it give you all small detail.
it can be a starter even for the beginner in Trading.
Encyclopedic coverage with high readability.......2001-01-25
This fine (and fat) book is just the thing for people who currently trade online or those who are considering it. It provides a nice assortment of screen shots of useful sites to become familiar with and concludes each chapter with a concise summary in list format. The book is 823 pages long but still doesn't go far enough on specialist topics. But this book is a comprehensive and carefully constructed primer on the entire waterfront from Stocks to Bonds to Mutual Funds and of course to the particulars and precautions of setting up an account, making trades, gathering timely information etc. I like that it doesn't take an AOL-centric point of view because that would be too limiting. If you are interested in Online Investing, buy this book and supplement it with a subscription to "Online Investing" magazine (monthly) which would bring you up to date on new developments and also cover special topics with more depth.
