Woefully out-of-date.......2007-05-19
The author refers to the "microcomputer" and suggests you consider purchasing a modem and getting to know your library's card catalog. Sure, it's always good to choose the right adviser, but any book can tell you that. Get something more recent.
Concise and Complete.......2000-09-09
If you are about to start work on a disertation and intend to buy just one book on how to manage it, this would be a very good choice. However do read more than one!
A comprehensive guide to the dissertation!.......1999-04-13
As someone who works privately with students, helping them with dissertations and theses, I highly recommend this book. When students call me in regard to assistance with their dissertation or thesis, I recommend that they buy this book and use it as an ongoing reference. As the title states, the information contained in this book anticipates and answers many of the questions that students have about the dissertation process, from proposal to completion. It is the most comprehensive guideline that I have come across in recent years.

Book Description
Previous editions of this book have helped over 100,000 students and professionals write effective proposals for dissertations and grants. Covering all aspects of the proposal process, from the most basic questions about form and style to the task of seeking funding,
Proposals That Work offers clear advice backed up with excellent examples. In the new edition, the authors have integrated a discussion of the effects of new technologies and the Internet on the proposal process with URLs listed where appropriate. In addition, there is a new chapter on funding for student research and a completely written chapter on qualitative research. As always, the authors have included a number of specimen proposals, two that are completely new to this edition, to help shed light on the important issues surrounding the writing of proposals.
Clear, straightforward, and reader-friendly,
Proposals That Work is a must-own for anyone considering writing a proposal for a thesis, a dissertation, or a grant.

The Only Proposal Guide You Need.......2002-12-30
As any graduate student will tell you acceptance onto a Ph.D program is largely based on submitting a successful proposal. Thereafter, as long as the researcher adheres to the proposal, graduation is virtually guaranteed. I am a Ph.D student who used the book to construct my proposal, which was summarily accepted by the research committee with minor changes. This appears to be contrary to what many Ph.D hopefuls experience. The book is expensive however I would highly recommend it. The proposal hurdle is well worth overcoming professionally.

Not wordy, just to the point. Combined with the PMBOK would allow for a good to great proposal.

A legitimately great book.......2004-01-18
Rereading the reviews of this book, I was surprised by the one negative review of this book by Tony DaGiau. No surprise! Turns out that he runs some solo consulting company that competes head on with the Sant Corporation, Tom Sant's company! If Tony writes a book on dirty tricks, it'll be worth reading. Other than that, stick with Sant's book (and, if the book is any indication, Sant's company).
Exactly what I needed.......2004-01-18
This book should be the first resource to which you turn if you need to write a persuasive document.
Although this book is directed towards business writers, the information in it is just right for understanding the psychology and techniques of persuasion. I used the book extensively for developing grant proposals (for higher education) and saw my success ratio double. As a result, I won more backing and my colleagues are still asking how I did it.
The author makes good points that produce good results, from his pointers on style and jargon to his mini-primers on formatting. Sant is absolutely at the head of the class.
A persuasive book on persuasive writing........2001-09-25
Tom Sant has put together one of the single best books on proposal writing. Whether you are responding to a bid request or just designing a basic proposal the book is filled with tips for getting the winning contract. Everything is covered here. There are examples of bad proposals and details of what is wrong with them, examples of how to make your proposal stand out from the others and even a primer on the basics of persuasion. It is well organized and flows well from the beginning to the end of the process not only defining what should be done but why you are doing it. This knowledge gives you the ability to adapt to unusual situations instead of just using a boilerplate method for all your contracts. It even comes with a small but thorough checklist in the appendix to make sure that you have left no stone unturned in creating the proposal.
There is however, one point that I would like to have seen added to the book. At the last of the book he emphasizes the importance of editing your proposal. When you are done then read it again as a whole to see that it contains continuity, check it for spelling errors, check it for grammar errors, etc. Read it from front to back two or three times to make sure that you catch everything so that you don't lose credibility with your audience. While I agree totally, on long proposals I also start from the back section and read the sections from back to front. Why? As you are rereading for editing your attention to detail tends to decrease and you become more careless after a certain point. Starting from the back sections gives you a chance to read those sections while still fresh. Does it work? Well let's take a look at his book itself. No errors jump out at me until page 178 where the word "about" is spelled "abut". Well if that is the only problem then he has still done well. Then I got to page 186 where he has an example of a badly worded item. After showing the better wording the book states "That's a little better, isn't it? A little easier to understand the first time through?" Obviously he meant to say that it is "easier to understand THAN the first time through". And then a third error on page 188 where he is discussing the importance of using "complement" and "compliment" correctly. But during the discourse he actually spells "complement" as "conplement". A perfect discourse that suddenly has three errors within ten pages.
This is still a fantastic book on the details of how to write a proposal, things to do, things to avoid, how to persuade, how to focus the proposal or contract, etc. It belongs on the shelf of anyone who writes proposals and contracts or any form of communication, which involves convincing other people to see your position. I even successfully used the information in the book to detail the current status and proposed direction of a mishandled project and was able to win the client back and keep the contract.
Very Helpful Book on Writing Proposals.......2001-05-31
This book is a must for everyone who has to write a proposal. It gave me some great ideas and different ways of writing, so my proposals were much better. The book is easy to read and I started to implement Sant's ideas immediately. I also hear that his company has very useful software to help automate proposal writing as well.
This Book helps you WIN!.......2001-05-30
Tom Sant's structure and approach to proposal writing and responding to RFP's has already helped me win more business. BY following his methodology, my proposals are far more persuasive and client-centered. It is a quick read, and gives you more than enough examples and some humor. If you write proposals, this is the book you need. Sant also has award winning software that follows the structure of the book and helps automate the proposal and RFP response process.

Book Description
This primer on the writing of the NIH proposal and the mechanics of applying for NIH grants offers hands-on advice that simplifies, demystifies, and takes the fear out of writing a federal grant application. The graduate student, post-doctoral fellow, or junior research faculty member applying for a prestigious NIH grant - anything from a training grant to a full-blown research award - faces many complex issues. Although several grant writing guides already exist, they are overly general and do not focus on the NIH process. Also, although several NIH institutes provide information regarding grant submissions, this information tends to be voluminous and insufficient to guide one through the process. This book provides specific and detailed step-by-step guidance in completing an NIH application through a number of unique features.
Written by an author with proven success in obtaining NIH grants and in developing grant application workshops for university and convention settings, this book features actual forms from NIH grant applications - including the brand new SF 424 forms - which have been annotated so as to guide readers step-by-step, highlighting unexpected nuances that can make all the difference between winning and losing a grant. This unique book extensively covers SBIR and STTR grants as well.
Writing the NIH Grant Proposal offers several key benefits to the reader:
- Provides detailed help for both the PHS 398 and the brand new SF 424 grant application forms
- Utilizes specific supporting cases and examples to clearly illustrate the grant proposal writing process
- Includes flow charts illustrating the grant application review process at NIH
- Features a section in which actual reviewers give advice about common pitfalls of proposals and what they, as reviewers, look for in a "fundable" proposal
- References additional helpful resources in several appendices, including a glossary of terms used in NIH grant applications, a directory of helpful web sites, and a set of checklists to guide the reader through every aspect of the writing process
This book is an ideal and must-have resource for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members who are planning to apply for a NIH grant.

The Best Manual Around.......2007-08-21
I am surprised by the low rating. I completely disagaree. I highly recommend this book, escpically for beginners like me. If you are just starting or already in the world of grant writing, this book is a MUST. It takes the unceratinty and stress out of writing and the daunting task ahead. If you don't know where to start and need guidenace along the way without hiring a grant writer or delegating the responsibility to someone else in your organization, then get this book. I've scanned other books in this area, and they do not come close to what this book offers.
Just the facts..........2007-05-27
This is a pretty nuts and bolts approach to preparing an NIH grant and reads much like the pages on the NIH websites. It has nicely brought together a lot of the detailed information (different types of grants, different application deadlines, etc) that is on the NIH websites and into a somewhat more user friendly format. But do not think about buying this book to help you actually WRITE a grant. This is for novices who don't know a K01 from a P01. If looking for help in preparing the best possible grant, I suggest the books by Ogden or Yang.

Book Description
The advice in this book is useful for many types of grant applications, business plans, journal articles, and research reports.
Book Description
In the revised second edition of the bestselling guide to grantseeking, author and activist Andy Robinson walks you through the challenges of incorporating grants into a complete fundraising program, using grant proposals as organizing plans, designing fundable projects, building proposals piece by piece, and fostering effective communication with funders who support the activist community. This updated edition keeps pace with the changing times and contains all new budgets and model proposals, interviews with funders from the grassroots community and timely information about grantseeking on the Internet.
Customer Reviews:
Practical, idealistic, and loaded with examples.......2004-08-06
I'm the author of another book about "grant writing" for nonprofits, but still I heartily recommend this book. In fact, Grassroots Grants is the only other book about grant seeking I recommend. Here's why.
Grassroots Grants demonstrates on nearly every page how grant seeking can be compatible with the idealistic nature of small nonprofits. Though it is unquestionably and unapologetically written for what might be called the "progressive" movement in the US, its principles apply to activist organizations of any stripe. In the sometimes cynical world of fundraising, it's refreshing to see values so consistently applied. The author leaves no doubt: fundraising isn't just a game played with money and ego, it's about changing the world. The author's strong sense of purpose resonates warmly with the reader's.
Second, the book has an abundance of examples -- proposal narratives, budgets, etc. -- that very effectively demonstrate some basic principles of good writing and good grant seeking. For beginners these examples do a lot to demystify the job of grant seeking; they help the beginner get off to a quick start. For experienced fundraisers, they provide new ideas about style and presentation. I admire the numerous examples in this book enough to wish there were more in mine!
In contrast, I do think that one kind of advice is treated a bit lightly in this book: the task of managing the creation, submission, etc. of many proposals simultaneously. That topic has implications for the bottom line and for organizational values, and is a big topic in my book. But I have to admit, it is not terribly relevant for someone who is trying to write their first grant or two or three.
True to its title, Grassroots Grants keeps its focus on grassroots topics, and very much succeeds on that basis. It is authentic and helpful.
A must-have resource.......2004-06-17
I have long been a fan of Andy Robinson's writing and this is his best book to date. Useful for both new and experienced grant seekers. This book will now be number one on my list of recommendations for participants in my grant seeking workshops and I will make sure that each of the new fundraisers that I coach have a copy.
My Choice.......2004-05-08
As a staff member of a community foundation, I am called upon to give numerous presentations on how to get grants. I never fail to suggest buying Andy's book. It will pay for itself--and it's a good read besides. Virginia Martinez
critical book for activists seeking grants.......2004-05-05
This book is priceless when it comes to accessible, detailed, and critical how-to information on how to write grants. I highly recommend Grassroots Grants as a vital resource for any progressive activist who needs to raise cash for the movement.
A Must For Any Grantseeker.......2004-05-01
Andy Robinson is one the best grassroots grant writers in the country. His book and a class I took from him helped us triple our budget from grants. The new edition is even better with excellent examples of winning grants from across the country.
Book Description
Guide to Effective Grant Writing: How to Write a Successful NIH Grant is written to help the 100,000+ post-graduate students and professionals who need to write effective proposals for grants. There is little or no formal teaching about the process of writing grants for NIH, and many grant applications are rejected due to poor writing and weak formulation of ideas. Procuring grant funding is the central key to survival for any academic researcher in the biological sciences; thus, being able to write a proposal that effectively illustrates one's ideas is essential. Covering all aspects of the proposal process, from the most basic questions about form and style to the task of seeking funding, this volume offers clear advice backed up with excellent examples. Included are a number of specimen proposals to help shed light on the important issues surrounding the writing of proposals. The Guide is a clear, straight-forward, and reader-friendly tool.
Guide to Effective Grant Writing: How to Write a Successful NIH Grant Writing is based on Dr. Yang's extensive experience serving on NIH grant review panels; it covers the common mistakes and problems he routinely witnesses while reviewing grants.
Customer Reviews:
Exactly what I needed........2007-10-02
Leave it to a guy at UCLA to write the perfect "how to" write a grant. Dr Yang's book was recommended by colleagues at UCLA, and they were right on the money. Very helpful for those of us not altogether familiar with the process. Unless you are an expert (in which case you would be writing your own book), this should be in your library.
Great quick read regarding NIH grant writing.......2007-05-27
This is a great, quick read that is clear and can help you focus on key topics in preparing an NIH grant. I particularly like the emphasis on clarity of writing and making an interesting story, instead of the usual drudgery. It is short enough that you can read it in one sitting, before sitting down to write. It is much less detailed than the Ogden book, "Research Proposals", with a different emphasis, on clarity of writing. If you are looking for a book for a class, I'd suggest Ogden. But if looking for a quick read for the novice to get them started the Yang book is great, due to its brevity and clarity.
Excellent, Excellent Book............2007-02-09
I have worked with the NIH for quite some time. I also worked at the University of Pittsburgh for more than 4 years doing research with the NIH. This is an indispensible book. It goes very well paired with "Government Funding and You". I'd highly suggest both books.
