5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-07-10

We use it as our textbook for an undergraduate course at Carnegie Mellon University.
This book is fundamental enough. Once you are patient enough to read it, you will get a lot.
It teaches concepts step by step, very good for beginners!

5 out of 5 stars Great Semiconductor Book.......2007-03-18

Reads like a novel. This book teaches semiconductor theory very well. It would be nice if it had some practical realizations of the theory it teaches, but it is overall the best book you will find in introductory semiconductors.

3 out of 5 stars 1996.......2007-03-02

I'm looking for a good reference book, for my PE exam. I bought this, kind of at Random. When I got it I was very dissapointed to see that it was written in 1996... This was written a year after I graduated from high school... Simiconductor devices have changed so much sense then... I hope it is a good book, but I wish I would have got a more recent book.

4 out of 5 stars Best Text I've Had.......2005-11-08

While I maybe be biased in saying this is the best text I've had at a certain school (where the author teaches), I feel this book makes a solid effort at covering the material. The book is organized nicely and the end of chapter questions always relate to the chapter material.

The section right before the questions also helps direct the student to the chapter section pertaining most to the question. It has helped me save time in looking up information! The only thing I would like would be a few more examples. Overall, a well balanced book with adequate conceptual explanation and a fair amount of examples. With this textbook, a good professor (or some determination on your part) and some work, you will do well in a basic semiconductors course.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product!.......2005-09-15

I recieved a book in excellent condition at a very good price. I would definately purchase from this company in the future and recommend that you do the same.

Book Description

This book examines in detail the basic properties and design, including chip integration, of CMOS and bipolar VLSI devices and discusses the various factors that affect their performance. The authors begin with a thorough review of the relevant aspects of semiconductor physics, and proceed to a description of the design of CMOS and bipolar devices. The optimization of these devices for VLSI applications is also covered. The authors highlight the intricate interdependencies and subtle tradeoffs between those device parameters, such as power consumption and packing density, that affect circuit performance and manufacturability. They also discuss in detail the scaling, and physical limits to the scaling, of CMOS and bipolar devices. The book contains many exercises, and can be used as a textbook for senior undergraduate or first-year graduate courses on microelectronics or VLSI devices. It will also be a valuable reference volume for practicing engineers involved in research and development in the electronics industry.

3 out of 5 stars Reader.......2006-12-15

If you seek to understand devices from a physical point of view this book just fails to live up to it.I read the chapters on MOSFETs' thoroughly and also the section of second chapter which describes MOS capacitor. The feel you get when you read the book is somewhat hard to write, it has all the relevant equations but lacks a physical insight. For example the quantum confinement of the inversion layer is so briefly described that someone reading the topic for the first time will never be able to make sense out of it.For those who know device physics, rather well, this book provides great material, drawn primarily from the authors' experience at IBM's T J watson research lab.As a suggestion Dr.Taur has a few papers, available online for free download at IBM's research and development journal,it will be a good idea to explore it and the other allied material appearing there. For the starter I will suggest to pick up Tsividis book on "Operation and modeling of MOS Transistor" and concurrently try the present volume.A better physical model can be developed.

5 out of 5 stars Bible for microelectronic device engineer.......2006-06-04

It covers most of the interesting fields in short channel device research/engineering. In addition, there is one chapter focused on device design from scaling point of view; and another one talking about the CMOS logic performance, which is not common in device book.

Also, this is an excellent device book balanced between physics and mathematics - another plus.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Modern VLSI Devices.......2006-02-18

It's new and arrived very quickly. The book is very informative.

4 out of 5 stars Frustrating, but recommended.......2003-04-10

The physicist in me wants to give this book 2 stars and the mathemetician in me wants to give it 5 stars, while the engineer and organizer in me wants to give it 4 stars. End result is 4 stars, but frustrated with the linear grading system. Here's a bit more on why.

Yes, as previous reviewers have said, this book gives you what many similarly named books don't: an advanced-level, industrial-view, practioner look at semiconductor device operation and design. It is well organized from that standpoint, which originally drew me in wholeheartedly.

My criticism is that when you really get into it -- and I have, by reading every page from start to finish -- the authors sometimes only use the math equations to explain why things happen. I guess this is okay in some science topics say, for abstract problems in QM matrix formalism when the "thing" is difficult to visualize physically, but this is a working, quasi-classical, real-world "machine"; physical explanations should almost always be possible. Writing about the concepts in addition to the math equations is important because most of us don't remember dozens of math equations day-to-day, but only the relationships often buttressed up by physical pictures. For example, on page 187 an equation (and equations are models of reality themselves containing their own limitations) is used to show (prove?) "the gate work function has a major effect on channel profile design, since, through the V_fb term, it has a strong influence on the MOSFET threshold voltage". In addition to the math symbolic relationship, this could also be said with physical underpinnings or something more physical sounding than "through the V_fb term".

People tend to solve problems either with: (1) pictures, (2) math, or (3) words, or combinations of these, so perhaps this is just a matter of which style is more 'natural' to a person. However, this pattern of occasionally only using math symbols to explain advanced concepts is done throughout the text. I think for an advanced text, deep physical understanding is sought, not just developing equations from standard theories; the theories breakdown under some conditions and only a good understanding of the advanced concepts will inform you when that might happen. Such understanding allows you to be on the lookout for the exceptions, which is important for the practicing engineer or researcher in this field.

5 out of 5 stars best textbook i used.......2002-05-19

this is the best textbook i used. you can realize how deep and clear of understanding the device physics the Dr. Taur is!
my feeling is many professors at university teaching this kind of device classes only understand 70% - 80% of vlsi device physics
even the ieee fellow! i believe many readers agree what i said.
based on my 7 yrs industrial research experience, i recommend
person who wants to be a device engineer should read this book, and don't skip any chapter. It's not easy for a circuit designer to understand all the contents, but it's helpful sometimes for their design. anyway, i suggest professors to use this book as a senior device textbook, and professors/IEEE fellows can clarify their confused concepts from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Clear, but why so many modules ?.......2002-08-08

I've used the first 6 volumes of this series to give a
course in semiconductor device physics, and found the text
really well done, I could allmost give the material verbatim
to the students (except for some calculations where some
more additional steps needed to enlighten some of them).
Most of the basic aspects of semiconductor physics, having
an impact on the practical characteristics of real devices
are treated and follow logically from the theory that is
exposed in the volumes.
The only thing that I found strange is: why so many small
modules, which are anyway interdependent ? Wouldn't one
decent book have been a better idea ?

1 out of 5 stars FEEDBACK.......2006-02-22

This book is not for begineer like me, I graduated as a Computer Engineer and really have problem learning this book. I suggest to read the Semiconductor Fundamentals same author before buying this book

5 out of 5 stars Complicated material written in a very concise manner........2005-12-14

On a quick scan at first the material covered in this book appears intimidating. It covers concepts of quantum physics like Schrödinger equation; Blotch theorem; Kronig-Penney model; Brillouin zones and then covers the semiconductor physics as Fermi levels; carrier transportation. The book covers a lot of fairly complicated material in a very concise and explanatory manner. Just by the sheer difficulty of the material; I would suggest taking a course to help alleviate the pain of self-tutoring.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice book.......2005-09-28

Very nice book. I especially liked the manner in which minimal essentials of solid-state physics was covered. In a short time you can get to know quite a bit of basic essentials of solid-state that a semiconductor device engr needs to know.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-12-31

This is an excellent treatise on the theory of semiconductors which is essential in learning solid-state devices like basic pn junctions and MOS devices. This book lays the fundamentals needed for a good understanding of these devices. Very useful for advanced undergrads and grads. This may be used as a companion volume with Streetman & Banerjee. However all the books of this 'Purdue' series is excellent - they are concise, clear and advanced.

4 out of 5 stars Book.......2004-07-15

One more very good book from Pierret. A significant amount of the content is similar to the "Semiconductor Fundamentals" book from the same author. However the first chapters are different, and reffer to an introduction on Solid State Physics and Quantum Mechanics. If you cannot buy it at least get a copy from the library and take a look on it. It is worth!

1 out of 5 stars This book is not so good.......2002-02-18

This book has a lot of typos and it is quite confusing if some equations are correct or wrong.I would not recommend this book for a graduate course if i were the professor.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Introducing III-V Devices.......2001-10-09

This is a popular book for introducing III-V semiconductor devices, and I think this will be the best one for beginners. However, the author can't put too much information in this book due to the restriction of volume. Thus, sometimes this book is also not very clear in some details, but this is still a very good book!

5 out of 5 stars Simply More Comprehensive!.......2000-10-28

People study the III-V Semiconductor have two good choices of reference book. One is written by Jiann S. Yuan with the title:"SiGe, GaAs, InP HBT". One is this book by William Liu. I found both are very up-to-date and detailed. But, Liu's is simply the more comprehensive one. Both talk a great deal about SiGe, GaAs and InP, but Yuan is focus on HBT. In the recent development, InP-based HEMT emerges to supercede HBT in the range from 6 to 10 GHz. You will find that Liu's book is more helpful in that regards.
