Speeds the transition from older versions.......2007-06-29
I have used Powerpoint extensively since the first edition and know it better than most -- and I have alwasy been able to easilly adapt to the latest version. This one is DIFFERENT -- and that's an understatement. Most will think, as did I, that MS screwed up a good program. But there is genius to the new "ribbon approach" - once you get used to it. You will need focus, patience and a helper, like the "Dummies" guide. I wish they had better titles, because having it sitting next to your desk makes YOU feel like a Dummy ... bet get over it, get the book and it will speed up your transition to the new version significantly. Could have had a bit more on the "power-features" but definitely worth the money.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Investment.......2007-02-05
I use this book two ways.
Whenever I start a new presentation, I scan it for ideas on how to keep my presentations fresh. I particularly like the color plates in the middle of the book for guiding my color related design decisions, and the host of other design related tips.
Also, whenever I run into a technical problem that I can't easily resolve myself, I check the book and the answer is usually there.
Get the book, you won't be disappointed.
Too much "for dummies," not enough "cutting edge".......2006-06-26
This is a good book for people with basic PowerPoint skills. It covers useful skills that people who do PowerPoint regularly should know. These skills include:
* how to use drawing tools
* how to use auto shapes, how to fill them with colors or textures, how to precisely position them and rotate them
* how to add lines and points
* how to create your own slide masters, title masters, and templates
* how to insert audio and video clips, and what formats work best with powerpoint
* how to insert links to other slides in your presentation, other files on your computer, or websites
* how to add shadows and customize their appearance
* working with textboxes
* how to incorporate Microsoft WordArt
* how to save your presentation in html format for posting on the web
* introduction to various programs that integrate with PowerPoint, some of which are built in to Microsoft Office (such as Microsoft Graph and Equation Editor)
* how to rip tracks off of music CDs to play during your presentation
However, I consider it an intermediate level book, not "cutting edge." Any intermediate user will already know most of these skills and can figure out the rest very easily, without purchasing this book.
If you are already pretty good with PowerPoint, please browse a copy of this book at your local bookstore before buying to make sure the level is appropriate for you.
I give this book 4 stars, but am subtracting one because the title is false advertising.
The PowerPoint Novel.......2006-06-15
Well, to start with this book does not have any dry or boring moments. It's a rollercoaster of PowerPoint info presented typically well in the Dummies style, and it's got lots of pepper and spice on the way to keep your PowerPoints looking awesome. In fact, even when the book is not with you in front of a computer, you'll still love reading it. I should know because I read it on a long airplane journey. And now when I'm not in front of the book, I still recollect the great advice when I'm doing my PowerPoints. It's like yes, this is what Bajaj said in the book! If you can read just one chapter, read the chapter on Color. That itself is worth the cost of this book.
What I Wish EVERY Presenter Knew!.......2006-05-20
So you've been doing PowerPoint for years now. So you've even done your own custom templates. Now it's time to take your PowerPoint game to the next level. Cutting Edge PowerPoint for Dummies was written by Geetesh Bajaj, a Microsoft PowerPoint MVP. That means that, while he doesn't actually work for Microsoft, he knows enough about PowerPoint that Microsoft tells people with questions to talk to him, and people like him. He's got the credentials to do this book.
And this isn't a basic PowerPoint book. Bajaj assumes that you know your way around the software, and that you've got a basic understanding of computers. You won't find any tips on formatting text here (try the other PowerPoint book I reviewed for the basics). What you will find are plenty of tips for spicing up your presentations.
One of the things I notice most often in PowerPoint presentations is that the people designing them have no concept of what color combinations look good. Bajaj discusses contrasting colors, and how to use color combinations to make text stand out and be easier to read. Color plates located in the center of the book help to emphasize his point. If more people would pay attention to this simple tip, PowerPoint presentations would be far less painful to view.
Bajaj then gives tips on enhancing presentations with the use of various forms of media -- video, audio, charts and diagrams, and animations including Flash -- in PowerPoint. He cautions the designer that overuse can be a bad thing, but shows how to make the best use of each of these features to create impressive PowerPoint slide shows.
Probably the most valuable part of the book is the CD-ROM that comes with it. Bajaj has included several programs that are designed to enhance PowerPoint, and are referred to in the book. My favorite so far has been SmartDraw 7, which I've used to create tables and charts that PowerPoint's included application couldn't do. You will also find all the examples that Bajaj uses in the book, including backgrounds, slide templates, and Flash animation samples. I've only just started to scratch the surface of what's on this CD, but PowerPoint power-users will find these resources invaluable.
There are a lot of people who need Cutting Edge PowerPoint for Dummies - we all know one or two. Unfortunately, some of them won't buy it for themselves. Be a good friend and buy it for them. They will thank you, and the people who have to sit through their presentations will really thank you.
Excellent book, even if you are not a "dummy".......2006-03-29
The author of this book sent me a sample chapter to include at my website and I was so intrigued by it, I decided to read the whole book, and was very impressed.
Do yourself a favor and forget the "dummy" in the title. This book offers great insight into some of the not-so-obvious workarounds that can be used to get the most out of your presentations. So, it's not only helpful to people who are newer to PowerPoint, but also includes lots of goodies for the advanced PowerPoint user. I learned lots of ways to fine tune stuff that I've had to take outside of the program before to get the result I wanted. Geetesh shows lots of alternative ways to get the job done within the program.
And, the texture files and other great stuff included on the CD are fantastic. The CD, itself, is worth the cost of the book.
If you want to see a sample of the AutoShapes chapter, the full chapter is here at my website:
http://personal-computer-tutor.com/geetesh/cepptfull01.html
I believe you will agree with me and follow-up on this sample tutorial by buying the full book ... and I doubt you will be disapppointed. This is a much-needed guide into some of PowerPoint's secrets.

Customer Reviews:
It's the model, stupid (not the visualization).......2007-08-13
While Xcelsius is a great tool, the model is the substance behind the image. This software makes presentation simple and powerful (and has a bit of the 'wow' factor, especially when sending interactive .pdfs) but the real issue is building the underlying model.
In chapter 15, the 'real world examples,' none of the Excel models are shown. A big omission. It would have been so easy to add the 15 excel files to the 'Bonus material.'
Great book.......2007-01-09
I liked this book a lot. I enjoyed the writing and even tough it was a Dummies book, it contained all the information that I needed to be able to get started mastering Crystal Xcelsius.
Xcelsius for Dummies.......2006-09-08
After being assigned to produce Dashboards for our company, I tried to read and understand the manual. I saw the Crystal Xcelsius for Dummies and thought I would give it a try. This book had me up and running in 2 days and I actually understood "why" things were happening. This is a great book for beginners and has a hands on approach to the learning, which I find extremely helpful. This book is for anyone who wants to learn Crystal Xcelsius in a hurry.
Is good but is the first.......2006-07-17
Is the best option to begin you in this excellent software like Xcelsius...
It is importat that you consider this book your initiation to after be a PRO using more complex dashboards (with the practice I mean!)
Making Fancier Presentations from Excel.......2006-07-12
The 'For Dummies' books have done it again. This is a complete and thourough introduction to using Xcelsius to give you an entirely new set of sophisticated ways to show Excel data in graphical form.
Xcelsius specializes in what they call dashboards. That is, the data is diaplayed in the form of gauges (speedometer, gas gauge, they even have what they call 'alerts' that are close to idiot lights). You can also design inputs in the form of sliders, buttons, again, not unlike an automobile dashboard.
In addition to dashboards there are other features such a maps, enhanced charts, pictures -- all kinds of things to ehnance the visual experience of a presentation.
Technically, Xcelsius compiles your visual model into a Flash (.swf) file and creates an HTML file that calls the .swf file. The HTML file is of course presented using a web browser, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, Microsoft Outlook, or Plumtree.
As in most 'For Dummies' books, this one starts slow, builds on the base, and by the end of the book you have a pretty good idea about the whole thing.

Customer Reviews:
Good Reference but Keep your common sense.......2003-09-08
In the last two years my company has been using Mr. Bounstein's advice to develop various management tools. "Communicating Effectively" has been a corner stone of new policies and everyone has been required to read the book. It is a decent one stop reference when you want to review your communication skills.
While supervisors and low level manages are working better, the Sr. Staff is utilizing the author's tools in a micromanagement-fest. For example, the review process has become a long drawn out process that requires several hours a week for the employee to revise their personal "assignment sheet". At the end of every three months you then have the employee summarize all their previous tasks for time, issues, schedule, etc. The quarterly review takes about 2 weeks with several cycles of review and rewriting with Sr. Staff members. Every detail is gone over and over. It is not uncommon to loose a week of productivity.
Read the book but maintain some common sense about how you apply the information.
A Very Useful Book.......2003-08-21
This is a great book with a wealth of very useful information. As a project manager, communicating is a large part of my job. This book will definitely make my life a lot easier -- especially the chapters on conflict resolution.
I wish I had bought this book 2 years ago, when it first came out -- I could have avoided a lot of headaches.
Communications Made Simple.......2002-03-09
With this book, Marty Brounstein breaks down communications into bite-size morsels that are easily digested. This book covers a broad range of territory from speaking clearly, using active listening techniques for better understanding, dealing with conflict, and appropriate uses for email, telephone and other forms of communication.
There's a tremendous amount of information, and I find myself going back to review the material often, especially when a meeting or conversation goes badly.
There is nothing here you can't find in other books, but it's all collected neatly under one cover, and the author presents the material in interesting ways that make it easier to absorb and put into practice.
Definitely a worthwhile read!
Top-notch title on effective communication.......2001-10-21
I really liked this book. One of the rare "for dummies" books that is low on fluff and high on substance. What the author presents here is an entire training course and then some on how to communicate effectively. This book will help you clearly get your message across to people at work, in social circles, in relationships. I was notoroious for being a very abrasive communicator. This book is already helping me smooth out some of the sharp edges. I listen far better now, and when I speak I no longer beat around the bush.
Book Description
“Save it in the edit” is a common saying among film professionals. Editing makes the difference between boring vacation movies and exciting travelogues…between the whole dull news conference and the highlights on the evening news. Whether you’re a budding Spielberg, a proud parent who wants two-year-old Junior’s every feat documented for posterity, or a band that wants your music video to rock, Final Cut Pro HD For Dummies tells you what you need to know to edit regular digital or high definition video like a pro. It covers the basics of capturing, importing, and editing digital videos, with detailed how-to for:
- Organizing your media
- Navigating the audio and video Timeline tracks and selecting clips and frames on the Timelines
- Getting fancier with split, roll, ripple, slip, and slide edits
- Working with audio, including mixing, editing out scratches and pops, and using filters to create effects
- Using Soundtrack to compose a musical score, even if you don’t know the difference between horns and strings
- Apply transitions such as 3D simulation, dissolve, iris, stretch and squeeze, and more
- Adding text for captions, opening titles, and closing credits
- Color-correcting video
- Compositing, rendering, and outputting your final product to tape, CD, DVD, or the Web
Three bonus chapters online go into more depth about rendering, customizing the interface, and managing media so you can refine your skills even further.
Final Cut Pro HD For Dummies was written by Helmut Kobler, a Los Angeles-based filmmaker, owner of K2Films, and a frequent contributor to Macaddict Magazine. Having this book next to your editing equipment is the next best thing to having him sit next to you and guide you through the editing process.

Customer Reviews:
For Films of the Baby up to Feature Length Professional.......2004-10-31
Note: For Mac users only. But then again, most of the people wanting to do things like edit movies are using a Mac already.
Final Cut Pro HD, is the latest version of the Final Cut program. HD stands for High Definition, and this version is indeed capable of editing HD video. But like with a lot of other software packages, the basic tools that you will use every day form the basics of the package, and they can be learned in a short time. Then as you reach points where you want to do more you can go back to the book to catch up on each point as you need it.
Final Cut is suitable for editing the movies showing you new baby, or if you really want to you can use it to get just about as sophisticated as you need for that feature length film you are making with your A-List actor friends. As with all the For Dummies books, this book isn't really for dumb people, it is for people that are just un trained on this particular package. It's a good book.

I bought the book specifically to learn how to show slides with a powerpoint program and projector. It barely touched upon it. I'm still left fiddling with a program that seems difficult to me, an experienced computer user.
The Great Book I Bought.......2005-09-05
I bought a PowerPoint 2000 for Windows for Dummies book for .95 (cents). I was very surprised when I opened the package and found a brand new book inside. I expected a badly torn and used book. However, I got a brand new book in the mail. I'm still suprised over that since I always taught I would get scammed if I bought anything over the internet.
Power Point 97 for Windows for Dummies.......2004-03-06
I purchased this book through Amazon.com from Matt nacc@yahoo.com. The service was great and the book arrived in near perfect condition. This book is a great help to me in making interesting presentations for my adult Sunday School class. I was raised with the yellow graphite, erasier attached to the top "word processor." This book is clearly written, easy to understand, and fun to read. I'm very satisfied with the book, the service, and the supplier. Thanks again!
Saved the day!.......2001-11-04
Ok, here's the situation, I had a job interview that required I take a proficiency test using power point and I'd never used the program before. At first I feaked when they told me, but then I ran out and grabbed a copy of this book with the hopes that it would help me not make a complete fool out of myself. Following along with the book on my notebook, I had no trouble understanding things from basics to more advanced techniques (like posting presentations on the internet). The witty voice and cartoons that the 'Dummies' books are famous for kept me alert and interested in moving forward. I never felt like I was being talked down to and was suprised to find myself enjoying the process! One thing I really appreiated is they give you multiple ways of preforming the same task, so you can choose which is best for you (also on these job proficiency tests they sometimes like to have you do it their way, so you better know more than one way to do things).
One week later I took the test, scored a 90% and was offered the position. Thank you Doug Lowe!
Experienced Users Need Another Book.......2001-02-07
This book was well written and provided a large amount of information - but did not cover any advanced techniques. If you have even a little experience with Power Point (or graphic design in general), pick another, more advanced book. You'll be much more rewarded.

Excellent resource.......2005-03-06
This book is a comprehensive guide to the art and science of public speaking. It covers all the basics and then some. I am a professional speaker and a professional member of the National Speakers Association (www.nsaspeaker.com). I teach public speaking skills and always recommend this book. I totally disagree with a previous reviewer who says the way to better public speaking is through practice. Experience without foundation is not the best teacher where public speaking is concerned. There is much to be learned about presentation technique, content development, preparation, etc. The book also gives great tips for using humor to make your point, using audiovisuals appropriately (so many people use them inappropriately), handling questions and so much more. Whether experienced at speaking or a novice, everyone can glean something from this book.
Great resource for revisting and revising your style........2003-09-26
I've had a copy of Successful Presentations for Dummies on my bookshelf since 1996 and found it to be a great reference and source of ideas for presentations as I have moved forward in my professional career. The book is broken up into various sections that address the most common problem areas for presenters and is easily referencable when you just need a quick review. I recommend this book, but it is now out of print.
Great resource for people who want to make an impact!.......2000-04-09
As a professional speaker, I found this book full of useful information. The author covers everything from how to be introduced to how to end your presentation effectively. He tells you how to involve your audience, how to use humor, how to design your presentation, and more. It's full of tips and examples. While it's true that the best way to improve your public speaking is to just do it, this book will shorten your learning curve by years!
Too long to read!.......1998-11-28
The section on humor is very good, but if you want to improve your presentation skills, it's no point reading a big book, you have to practice to improve.
This book could have been more useful if it were more concise.
