5 out of 5 stars The only book you need!.......2007-09-10

This book teaches that even if you are not the next Amazon, ebay, or Google, you can still make a million on the internet. You just need to find a niche that is underserved.

I purchased "Starting an Online Business for Dummies" and the reviews were mixed. In someone's reviews, they mentioned this book and said it was much better. They suggested buying this book instead of the Dummies book. I took the advice, and am glad I did!

The book is great because it helps you understand that you don't need to be a billion dollar business to start with. Even small, underserved niche markets can earn a million.

I highly recommend this book if you are considering an ebusiness. It is well worth the money. I have been talking about this book to many people who have asked to borrow the book. I keep telling them to pick up their own copy because I am still using it as a reference! It is a great book!

If you already know what a "blog" is and you're fully proficient in searching the internet with google or yahoo, you're probably too sophisticated for this book. Fox's target are people with very little education (He introduces us at one point to the fancy MBA word, "business plan"). Fox also uses the website he started for his wife and mother as case studies. I guess I should have known better. After all, it is called 'Internet Riches" and has a picture of some guy driving in a brand new convertible on the cover.

5 out of 5 stars wonerful book.......2004-11-11

I am working from home with my third business, its very sucessful by my standards, and I have its growth firmly under control.I picked up a copy of this at the library, wish I had read it two businesses ago.
If you have a small business, or want to start one, please read this first, its the best small business book you can read. Its honest, no hype or promo work, I now have a copy and use it it to keep on track wit hsome of my details.
Many of the lessons in the book I learned the hard way over the last ten years, by reading this you can avoid a lot of Pain!

5 out of 5 stars Like A Beacon In the Dark.......2003-09-03

People who look to this book for a how-to manual on financing, marketing, incorporating, etc. will be disappointed. And that's OK, because it offers something much more precious - peace of mind. That's not to say there isn't general advice about some of these issues and even some real targeted suggestions to solve certain problems, but the focus is more on the mindset of being your own boss, at start-up and beyond. A step-by-step, "put Tab A in Slot B" book almost seems like putting the cart before the horse after reading this. If the mind isn't ready or is struggling, everything that comes after will be a struggle too despite the best instruction manual.

I am in the process of opening my own business after being "downsized" for the last time. Some days have been up and some days have been down. Some days I thought I should throw in the towel and go live in a hut somewhere far, far away. This book has shown me that all of this is normal and has shown me how to use the up moments and push past the down ones to get what I want. It's amazing the way the authors almost seem to step inside your head. They are supportive, clear and offer real, usable advice to keep on track mentally, exult in your victories and deal with the difficulties as they arise. The format is conversational, friendly, uplifting and confidence-building.

This book will be part of my "business bible" collection - those books I will refer to again and again as I grow my business.

I am intending to start my own little business but have no idea how to, and bought this book. to my dissappointment, this book is so general and not touching the point. it tells me how great it is to start your own business...etc which i knew already, and left me unchanged about how to start my business and wondering where the hell the secrets are?!!
If I want to know how to build a house, I don't need to know how great it is having my own house.. instead, I need to know that first i need to find the perfect land and other important steps. The book can save much paper in cutting off all the repetition of unnecessary sentences.

5 out of 5 stars This book made me money.......2002-12-17

My daughter bought this book for me and it made me tenfold over the price of the book within one week by using one of the tips. The Edwards' format is easy to read and they go through all the possible setbacks of self-employment and how to avoid them. I've been a freelance writer for two years, but anyone - whether starting to work on their own or in the business for 10 years - can learn from this book. It's well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2000-02-26

I am 21 years old, and would love to be a part time real estate investor and be an independent personal trainer! I am in college, and have had low paying minimum wage jobs(working for someone else) and my LONG TERM goal is to be my own boss. Why spend your whole life working under 1 person's clock, with only one set paycheck(a lousy one at that) when you are capable of so much more? To me having your paycheck dependent upon only one person is much riskier than getting the same amount if not more from lots of other people. All of the males in my father's side of the family worked for themselves. Here is what my great-great grandfather once told my own father, "It is best to get $1 from 100 people, then to get $100 from only one person".

Book Description

A new 21st century individualism is overtaking “corporation-as-king” capitalism, transforming the way we work and live. Today, real power rests in the hands of creative individuals like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, and Steven Spielberg, who are changing the world one great idea at a time. In THE 80/20 INDIVIDUAL, Richard Koch reveals the secret of their success: they discovered what they do better than anyone else and rode it for all its worth.

In this inspiring sequel to his classic bestseller THE 80/20 PRINCIPLE, Koch shows how to maximize success in your career and life by using the proven principle that 80 percent of changes in the world result from the most powerful 20 percent of actions and ideas. He’ll show how to use your own powerful “20 percent spike” – your most creative ideas and unique skills – to measure the amount of value you bring to your employer, clients or customers. For most people, there is a huge disparity between their intrinsic value and the compensation they receive for their efforts. THE 80/20 INDIVIDUAL shows how to narrow that gap.

Drawing from his own success as an entrepreneur, as well as from the stories of scores of companies and individuals who have flourished as a result of an 80/20 mind-set, Koch offers a step-by-step method to remodeling a career or existing business, or creating a new one – one that most benefits you. He provides valuable insights on finding 80/20 partners, hiring 80/20 employees, and running an 80/20 business.

By building a team that supports your efforts and excels in areas where you lack experience or knowledge, you’ll be able to focus your time and energy on your strengths. Productivity and profits will soar because you’ll be doing what you do best and enjoy the most. By using the 80/20 strategies outlined in the book, you can take control of your career and financial future.

Once in awhile when I feel there are a lot of things pulling at me all at once, I will read this book to guide me/ give me ideas to sort out all the pulls. Highly recommended for those who find works in the connected world expect us to attend to all details and requests immediately but we know that are not the right deals for us.

5 out of 5 stars Stand-alone, the 80/20 Individual needs not a predecessor.......2005-04-12

After reading the 80/20 Individual without reading Koch's first book, I can say it is well worth the read on its own. The initial chapters of the book seemed like an autobiography to me and, frightfully, I almost put it down. But the author jumps off this base of case studies and solid historical references (besides being a hugely successful entrepreneur/consultant, Koch has also a history degree in his pocket), head-first into solid, practical content. I loved the no-nonsense language. The author takes the natural selection process of business life at face-value, even referring to the value-creating knowledge from a century of capitalism as "business genes." And without spoiling the story, I would summarize the idea as this: Take the absolute best of yourself, consumate your talents with the absolute best business genes you can seduce, and leverage the combination with a business structure that places you in the direct path of credit for the results. True to the buyline on the cover, this book "shows you how".

3 out of 5 stars The 80/20 Individual .......2004-11-15

This book was good but I enjoyed the previous book The 80/20 Principle more. My reason for that is that much of what was covered in the 80/20 Individual was just a regurgitation of the 80/20 Principle.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-06-12

Author Richard Koch contends that individual initiative is responsible for most progress, given that 20% of entrepreneurs or innovators are responsible for 80% of results and new ideas. Koch focuses on how to be a successful entrepreneur by working with a small team of supporters. He discusses the importance of good ideas, great colleagues, a powerful value proposition, good partners and, of course, ample capital. He suggests a trend toward a new breed of corporations based on individualism, though Bill Gates and Warren Buffett alone do not necessarily make a trend. While Koch writes in a breezy, engaging style, the 80/20 mantra becomes generalized and repetitious. It's a popular expression, but does it always apply? The other chapters are more solid, though they restate known entrepreneurial principles and techniques, dressed in 80/20 lingo. As such, we suggest, they may be a good introduction for the new entrepreneur, if not for the rugged individual who has already mastered the percentages.

"Scotchie gives us an insider's look at [how to] assemble vibrant, creative studio spaces. Floor plans are provided...The photographs are excellent."--Library Journal

Take a photographic tour of 10 beautiful ceramics studios, and discover exactly how and why each design so perfectly meets the artist's particular needs. Author and ceramist Virginia Scotchie covers all the practical decisions about equipment, workflow, and safety that go into setting up a new studio, from using the space effectively and dealing with lighting, electrical, and ventilation needs, to establishing a small business office. Every ceramist will find inspiration in Michael Sherrill's spacious and adaptable studio, so suited to his large-scale sculptures; Alice Munn's intimate and tidy atelier; and Ben Owen III's highly organized layout, arranged for volumes of production work and featuring a separate gallery.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Are YOU rich?.......2007-09-04

This book annoyed me as it is for people with plenty of money to throw at an architecturally designed, no holds barred, studio space. How many artists have this kind of money? As has been said too, it offers no practical advice for measuring, designing or actually setting up the actual studio.
Waste of time buying this unless you just want to look at pretty photos of idyllic conditions.

2 out of 5 stars underwhelmed.......2007-03-09

There was less of this book than I expected. Just pretty photos, no solid advice. Most important, no measurements!

4 out of 5 stars Good but be careful !.......2007-01-12

It's full of beautiful pictures, showing wonderful studios. The book could be more practical showing details of how to design a studio with measurements, precautions, equipment suppliers, etc.
Good as ideas for lay-outs and artist's work

5 out of 5 stars Love Lark Books!.......2007-01-08

This book is wonderful for potters. It's full of inspirational pictures of not only studios, but the artist's work. All the Lark books I own are fantastic!

4 out of 5 stars Classy, but limited........2004-06-14

The studio examples are regionally limited to the author's home base area (Southeastern U.S.). The good part of this restricted view is that the photographs are numerous and pretty fantastic. The drawback is there's a lot of us who have to factor in different weather and terrain conditions--depending on where we live.
The plans shown didn't have any measurements showing scale, so it was hard to get a true feeling as to how the various pieces of equipment filled the space. The graph paper used as a backdrop for these plans only caused more confusion, as there was nothing to show if each graph square equaled one square foot, or four.
I would suggest--to anyone designing a studio--that you beg, borrow or buy your own graph paper and do your drawing to scale. Also draw your equipment to scale and cut out silhouettes so you can try out many approaches to placement.
None of the studio plans matched my desires or needs, but the examples are varied enough that bits and pieces of almost all were helpful in designing my new studio. Pay particular attention to the information on traffic and work flow. It will help whether you work alone or have students sharing the space.
All in all, a presentation with classy paper, pictures, and prose--and all at a great price.

Book Description

These autobiographical and analytical essays by a diverse group of professors and graduate students from working-class families reveal an academic world in which "blue-collar work is invisible." Describing conflict and frustration, the contributors expose a divisive middle-class bias in the university setting. Many talk openly about how little they understood about the hierarchy and processes of higher education, while others explore how their experiences now affect their relationships with their own students. They all have in common the anguish of choosing to hide their working-class background, to keep the language of home out of the classroom and the ideas of school away from home. These startlingly personal stories highlight the fissure between a working-class upbringing and the more privileged values of the institution.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Voices to be heard.......2001-05-02

I read a selection from this book for a class, which prompted me to read the rest of the book. Really interesting narratives written by a number of first generation university students from a number of races and cultures, all from working class backgrounds.

A common theme is the feeling of living in two worlds - home and school - worlds which seldom intersect. Students speak of trying to fit in with peers who were more well off, explaining why they didn't have money to go out on the weekend, or why they couldn't attend various events or spring break flings because they had to work.

Entitlement - not quite feeling like they belonged at the university... watching peers walk around like they owned the place and were born to it.

Identity - being changed by the college experience, and wondering how the experience would change their relationship with family/community who seemed, by comparison, so unchanged. Several spoke of becoming bi-lingual - speaking one way at the university and another at home. Communication styles that were vital to being understood and accepted both places.

The irony of higher education being such a point of pride for the family, who made huge sacrifices for the student to be the first in the family - not knowing that the college experience would potentially pull the student away from identifying with that family/community working-class culture.

University values - While schools are at least talking about racial unity, there was less attention given to class unity. Many struggled with the idea that the whole purpose of getting a university education was to "get a brighter future", a "better opportunity", to "escape" having to work a blue collar job. If blue collar is who I am and who my famliy is, why is that something to escape? These were conflicting messages for many... be inclusive and sensitive to differences, but the white collar world is a higher, more worthy pursuit.

The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is the length of the book. The narrative format is engaging, but I felt the collection was a little lengthy to hold my interest through the entire book because the themes were repeated quite often in each narrative. Still worth the read, this perspective needs to be heard!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a would-be stay-at-home-worker.......2006-02-25

This is a book you should read before you quit your job. This book is the one you can trust. It includes almost everything you need to know about working from your home.
No wonder it's a fifth edition.

2 out of 5 stars Thick but very shallow.......2006-02-12

(Maybe 2 stars is a little harsh, but I'm not sure I can change it)

The book is relatively thick. It's full of the kind of detail I find somewhat tedious and a deterrent to reading cover to cover - but what to me is tedious might strike you as comprehensive. In any case it seems reference oriented.

There's a little too much pointlessly obvious and irrelevant detail (e.g section on the difference between a scanner and digital camera; a line drawing of how to set up an item of folding furniture which isn't even referred to in the text). Frequently sprinkled contact details for particular companies give it the feel of advertainment at times (eg the page dedicated to detailing modular furnings available from one retailer, complete with price tags and the supplier's web and phone details). It is in all ways US-centric, which is either an advantage or a disadvantage depending on your location.

Though on first look (I do own it) I found little to make me want to actually read the book, it might also as a passable 'wide but shallow' quick reference, especially if you're in the US.

It might also make an OK first book on the topic. I would recommend however, that the prospective reader preferentially (or at least additionally) purchase a number of more succinct, specifically targeted books which explore key topics in depth.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Marketing and Management Guide for the SOHO Owner.......2004-05-06

Barbara has really outdone herself again in part 2 of her Homemade Money book series, Bringing in the Bucks. In this follow-up to her Starting Smart! book, Barbara has provided an encyclopedic A-Z "crash course" in home business management that's an incredible resource all by itself, and has devoted the rest of the book to the number one problem with which my clients struggle--marketing their businesses. Barbara literally takes you by the hand and walks you down the marketing path, from helping you devise your marketing strategy to providing insight on how to play the publicity game to giving you ideas on inexpensive marketing techniques. Once you've gotten through these stages, there's a whole chapter devoted to doing business online. I would be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive resource to help my clients manage and market their businesses.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing In the Bucks.......2003-09-15

As a woman who has worked from home for over eight years, the most important lesson that I have learned is to enjoy all of the expert information that is available for research about working from home. Homemade Money: Bringing In the Bucks is a perfect example of reading something that will enlighten you, help you in areas that you never imagined and give you the self-confidence to know that you are choosing your own path for your life instead of letting some employer rule your days! I never imagined how much information author Barbara Brabec was cramming into this great read! Even though I feel good about my work and my lifestyle, I learned even more about working from home and increasing my future income from Homemade Money: Bringing In the Bucks. I suggest you take the time to read this jam-packed book, filled with information, been-there-done-that advice and helpful tips. It could possibly help YOU bring in the bucks!

5 out of 5 stars The Bible for Home-Based Business!.......2003-08-07

My good friend Barbara Brabec has produced what I believe to be the most comprehensive "manual" for anyone starting or thinking of starting a home-based business.

No questions are left unanswered. From start-up concerns like zoning, permits, and legal forms of your business, to running your business day-to-day, this book is the only one that you'll need to get up and running in no time.

What's more, Barbara Brabec has solicited the comments of industry professionals from many different fields. They offer tried-and-true tips and techniques to run your business smoothly and, as the title says, "Bring in the bucks"!

Highly recommended as more and more people are starting and running their own businesses today-- from home. And it contains all of the info you need.

If you buy just one book before launching out into the deep waters of home-based self-employment, make it this book!

5 out of 5 stars Make This Book Your First Investment for your own HBB!.......2007-04-05

Millie Szerman's A View From the Tub is a practical no-nonsense How-To Guide to starting your own HBB. Millie's book answered all the questions I had that nobody else wanted to answer and then there were answers for questions I wouldn't have thought to ask, but am glad Millie thought to include! Well-organized in an easy to follow readable format with checklists and blank pages for your own notes, my copy of A View From the Tub is well-read and I have referred back to it often every step of the way in structuring my own HBB.

Like any good good teacher/mentor who is worth their weight in gold, Millie selflessly gives her student readers the tools of the trade to do with them what they may.

Make this book your First Investment in your own HBB and you are bound to get off on the right track! Thank-you Millie!

5 out of 5 stars Katie Roberts, former managing editor for VOWS: magazine.......2006-10-10

In my recent attempt to launch a freelance writing career, I read this book and found it to be useful in two ways. First, it forced me to get organized, especially in terms of understanding my strengths and weaknesses as a future telecommuter. Second, it's been inspirational in that the many anecdotes have helped me to realize what's crucial for my business' success. My favorite element to this book is that it's short and sweet. Szerman gets right to the point and doesn't waste your time. However, she's got enough meaninful tips, exercises and information packed inside this guide to keep the serious entrepreneur very busy. Thanks for the great advice!

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring book.......2005-07-11

I finished reading "A View From the Tub" about five miuntes ago.
Under normal circumstances, I would have considered reading a book on home based business a chore, as I am in the process of climbing the corporate ladder. I can only say how glad I am that I read it from end to end.

I feel this book is not only for people running home based businesses. There is a whole lot of valuable information which can be translated into being more successful in corporate America. I feel that is the real beauty of this book.
While reading this book, I had the feeling that Millie was actually talking to me and her positive and upbeat tone left me feeling refreshed, motivated and maybe even a little more confident, as being my own boss is an ultimate personal goal for myself down the line. Plus I learned so many new things!!!

Thank you Millie, for this wonderful gift.

5 out of 5 stars A VIEW FROM THE TUB.......2003-02-28

Just what I needed. Millie gives you tons of ideas and good advice on everything including things you never thought to consider. I would recommend this book to any women wanting to start a business from home. Speaking as a person who has small children this book was very encouraging and has helped me see how working from home would be very fulfilling for me and my family. I am very "pumped up" about getting my venture off the ground. Thanks Millie!

5 out of 5 stars Addressing the How-Tos and What-Ifs.......2002-12-27

...

As a writer working from home, I found Millie Szerman's guide book on how to work out of one's home full of how-tos and what-ifs that gave even an old hack like me a few new ideas about how to organize, how to maintain my sanity.

A View from the Tub would be equally useful for someone who is considering starting a home-based business.

I appreciated the chapter on "how to tune up your one-man band." The poet in me loved the "eating an elephant" metaphor as a way to multitask. The way the author addresses "the loneliness factor" was especially useful for someone who had convinced herself that she loves working without a soul in the room.

What it all adds up to is that this author/publicist has not just researched the subject but has lived it.

A View From the Tub includes a checklist, case studies, a resource section, a place to take notes and quotes from the likes of Ben Franklin and Ann Landers. It is a great book for "home study"-sorry I just couldn't resist the pun.

5 out of 5 stars "MUST HAVE" book if you work from home!.......2007-10-04

I came across this book a few years after it was written so knew there was a chance the advice might be outdated. This was a risk I was willing to take because I've been so impressed with Kristie T's websites (voted one of the best by Dr. Phil!) and her support of work-at-home moms. What a great purchase!

This book is a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to making money from home while keeping your eye on the real prize . . . your family and quality of life. This book is easy to read, entertaining, supportive and soooo informative. It includes a massive resource section for those who work from home.

As a mom of three who has run home businesses and coached others in this area, Kristie's book has a "walk the talk" feel. What mom can't relate to her touching and humorous stories of the realities of raising little ones (the trials and joys)! Yet, the book has substance, including many action lists, web and written resources and helpful templates.

In my opinion, the appeal of this book goes way beyond work-at-home moms. Any home office professional who wants to make their work environment more efficient, their time more productive, and their business more profitable needs to read this book. It is an excellent guide for any home business owner. Buy this book for your business reference library today!

2 out of 5 stars For a woman-entrepreneur with assets to invest, not for stay-at-home Mom.......2006-09-30

I am not sure how this book got such great reviews. It really misleaded and dissapointed me. It is for a woman with significant resources to start with, who doesn't need all the dry tips listed, but not for stay-at-home Mom. And it is a business oriented, not life oriented. It is not 'A Mom's guide to working from home', but a business women's guide to get more organized and hire multiple services for the business developement. There is nothing absolutely about Mom's life and for Mom's life. It is a big text however and probably can be useful for someone, but mostly dry and a reference-like, big doesn't mean good. Gives an advise how to choose an office chair, a domain name, purchase a web-site design, organize a radio appearance, etc., and some tips that you know from a common sense. It is a self-promotional book leading to the author's web site to promote her coaching business. I returned it. May be it can work for someone else...

5 out of 5 stars As the illustrater.................2006-01-27

Hi! My name is Nicole. I am the illustrater! I took lots of time on them. I love my book because my mom and me did good! I hope you like my book! my mom hopes so too! have a good day every body!

5 out of 5 stars Packed with Helpful Ideas.......2005-04-05

Kriste's passion for helping work-at-home moms is evident in all that she does and this book is no exception.

She walks her talk in supporting work-at-home moms- she was kind enough to grant me an interview to put in my e-book "A Mother's Dream: Finding Fulfillment in Your Home Business".

Any mother interested in balancing working from home with motherhood should get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, what a book !.......2004-07-23

I have read and ALSO promote this book for Kristie and I have to tell you that if you are really thinking about working from home and running an online business, you NEED to read this book. The information she has in this book can make or break anyone who wants to run a business from home. I would like to thank Kristie as well for giving me the opportunity to promote this book and for the book itself, I love it! There are many work at home books on the market today, but this book stands alone, read all the reviews, they can't all be wrong! Thanks Kristie for a wonderful work at home book.
