4 out of 5 stars very useful activities.......2007-05-13

I have found this book to be very useful for providing my elementary school students with a variety of activities which build phonemic awareness. I had borrowed a coworkers copy and kept it so long I decided to buy my own. My only issue with this book is that I have not had luck with the websites offered in the book for materials and it relies so much on outside commercial materials and other books/programs. I've made my own materials from the ideas suggested in the book.

Book Description

Getting a new job or a big promotion is like building a house: You need to get the foundation right for both. With a job, the quick-drying cement is how well you do in your first hundred days, since they establish the foundation for long-term momentum and great performance.

Tom Neff and Jim Citrin are two of the world’s leading experts on leadership and career success. As key figures at Spencer Stuart (hailed by the Wall Street Journal as the number one brand name in executive search), they must understand the criteria for success when they recruit top executives for new leadership positions.

Through compelling, first-hand stories you will hear from people such as Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of GE, on how his career has been a series of successive first hundred days. Larry Summers, president of Harvard University, talks candidly about what he could have done differently in his early days to avoid dissipating goodwill among the diverse constituencies important for his future success. Gary Kusin of Kinko’s shares the specifics of the hundred-day action plan he crafted for himself before he started his new job. Paul Pressler of Gap Inc. shows how he developed a general strategic agenda that established fundamental principles and goals, waiting to prepare a more detailed strategic plan until later in his tenure.

Tom Neff and Jim Citrin’s actionable eight-point plan will be the foundation for your success—whether you are moving to a new organization or being promoted—showing how to:

• Prepare yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally from the time you accept until the time you begin
• Manage others’ expectations of you—bosses, colleagues, and subordinates
• Shape and build the team that will work with you
• Learn the lay of the land and find out how things “really work around here”
• Communicate your story effectively to people inside and outside the organization
• Avoid the top ten traps that confront every new leader, such as disrespecting your predecessor, misreading the true sources of power in the organization, or succumbing to the “savior syndrome”

When you start a new job you are in what AOL’s Jon Miller calls a “temporary state of incompetence,” faced with having to do the most when you know the least. But with the eight-point plan of You’re in Charge—Now What? you’ll understand and be able to take action on the patterns that will build your success.

2 out of 5 stars Czarnecki's "You're In Charge..What Now?" Better for non-CEOs.......2007-06-17

When I saw the "Recommended for You" email, I thought Gerald Czarnecki had come out with a sequel. Instead, I find a not as elegant knock-off.

Czarnecki offers a much better, more digestible plan for those who are newly appointed in positions of management. His "Seven Essential Steps for Work Leader Success" are useful and proven techniques for those who need it the most: the everyday people in an organization who get the job done, not the Stanford-grad CEOs who have already spent years in management and academia learning the ropes. I have recommended his book to friends in just about every industry, from IT to the military. I, myself, found Czarnecki's book extremely useful as a new senior non-commissioned officer in dealing with people who became my subordinates overnight. Unfortunately, this book did not address that sort of issue.

This book isn't a terrible book by any means, and perhaps for a CEO or high-level manager it is something good. As I am neither, I didn't find it appealing. It's essentially the same information you can find elsewhere, and as a previous reviewer pointed out, the tips and techniques are more for those already in the boardroom. Go back to Czarnecki's original if you are a new manager, especially one who was promoted from within, or looking for a gift for the grad or newly promoted.
You're In Charge...What Now?

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful in Starting Off on the Right Foot.......2007-06-04

My executive coach recommended this book and she was right. It is very well organized with lots of examples on how to get started as the new leader in a large organization. Suitable for small but oriented towards large business of all types. Did not provide Government examples but was still very helpful. I read the book cover to cover and made lots of notes. Try to read at least 3 weeks before reporting. I am three weeks into a Government IT job with a staff of 650 and $100M in budget and all the signs are there that this book was helpful for accelerating my early take-off.

3 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2007-05-01

I bought You're in Charge... on Amazon.com. I am interested in the leadership process, how to approach new roles, some of the pitfalls, etc and thought this was a good book on the subject. I do believe that the best place to get leadership ideas and tips is from Michael Watkins' The First 90 days, but I think Thomas Neff and James Citrin provide aspiring leaders with a worthwhile book.

The best feature, although sometimes over done are the real life examples of CEO's who took the reigns, and what they did. Whether it was a turnaround situation, or continuing a legacy of success, there are some standard approaches that each of these leaders used. The premise of the book is that there are 8 steps to the new leadership process -

1. Prepare yourself before taking over
2. Align expectations (internally, externally)
3. Build a management team you can rely on
4. Build a strategy (Which includes just refining the old one)
5. Transform the culture to aling it with your expectations
6. Manage up and where influence lies (Board, boss, whoever has more power... and also manage those who have institutional influence.)
7. Communicate your vision, your steps in the process, strategy
8. Avoid common pitfalls.

Nothing really earth shattering here, but certainly good advice. The focus of the book are the steps every leader should take within the first 100 days of your tenure.

One of the more interesting parts of the book goes back to the CEO's and what they did. Since this was published in 2005, some of the CEO's haven't turned out to be the captains fo industry that they are potrayed to be (At least from a market perception perspective.). You read about Paul Pressler and Bob Nardelli and what they did in their first 100 days. Needless to say, as time passed, their reputations are somewhat tarnished now. There are others referenced as well that haven't been treated very kindly by the marketplace.

Anyhow, there is no harm in picking this up, although like I referenced before, I think there are other leadership books out there that I more worthwhile. You're in Charge tends to get a bit over done, but if you can overlook that, there are some worthwhile tips to pick up.

1 out of 5 stars Written only for CEOs.......2007-01-09

If you are a brand new CEO and need to know how to run your organization, buy this book. If you are at any lower level, this book is not meant for you.

The authors state directly from the beginning that they focus more on CEOs than most other positions but the lessons learned are applicable to anyone. This is not true. The author focus too much on the role of a CEO. The examples and suggestions are unique to that role. In one section the book describes how to find your management blind spots such as research and development, marketing, etc. If you are a software development manager in a large firm, your knowledge of marketing or R&D will most likely do little for your career. Yet this book highlights that as areas you should improve.

Another example on how the book focuses too much on CEO is displayed in the how-to-work-with-your-boss chapter. They entire chapter discusses how you should interact with the board of directors! This is a complely different relationship than what 99.9% of workers engage in. The relationship you have with your boss is possibly the most important relationship in your career. To focus this chapter on working with the board makes it absolutely useless to anyone who is not an officer or anyone that does not work for a private firm.

5 out of 5 stars Useful handbook for the new leader.......2006-01-09

The immediate task for CEOs who land a dream job is making sure it doesn't turn into a nightmare. Authors Thomas J. Neff and James M. Citrin provide a marvelous "executive how-to kit" that draws on their extensive management and consulting experience. They explain everything you need to know about getting off to an excellent start now that you're ensconced in the corner office. While the book is targeted to CEOs, it applies to anyone stepping up to a higher level of leadership. Taking over a new role often means enduring what AOL's Jon Miller describes as a "temporary state of incompetence." Even if your promotion becomes a trial by fire, we believe this book will help you direct the flames and propel your organization to new heights of achievement.

Book Description

If you could send a letter back through time to your younger self, what would the letter say?

In this moving collection, forty-one famous women write letters to the women they once were, filled with advice and insights they wish they had had when they were younger.

Today show correspondent Ann Curry writes to herself as a rookie reporter in her first job, telling herself not to change so much to fit in, urging her young self, “It is time to be bold about who you really are.” Country music superstar Lee Ann Womack reflects on the stressed-out year spent recording her first album and encourages her younger self to enjoy the moment, not just the end result. “Your hair matters far, far less than you think,” is the wry advice that begins the letter bestselling mystery writer Lisa Scottoline pens to her twenty-year old self. And Maya Angelou, leaving home at seventeen with a newborn baby in her arms, assures herself she will succeed on her own, even if she does return home every now and then.

These remarkable women are joined by Madeleine Albright, Queen Noor of Jordan, Cokie Roberts, Naomi Wolf, Eileen Fisher, Jane Kaczmarek, Olympia Dukakis, Macy Gray, and many others. Their letters contain rare glimpses into the personal lives of extraordinary women and powerful wisdom that readers will treasure.

4 out of 5 stars thought provoking and worth a read - share with a young woman.......2007-01-20

The main review dissed two of my favorite stories in the book - Barbara Boxer and Eileen Fisher. Different strokes, I guess. This is a quick and easy read but I find myself still thinking about it and mentioning it to friends. After I get it back from the friend I loaned it to, I'm going to write my own "what I know now" and tuck it into the book, and then send it off to my teenage nieces.

If nothing else, it is good to be reminded that we do learn much about ourselves and others over time, and that for the most part, struggles that seem insurmountable are usually survivable. Even if it hurts.

4 out of 5 stars A Guide for Self-Exploration.......2007-01-10

Most of us have wondered at some time in our lives, "what if....." Letters to My Younger Self provides insight into the lives of other women and offers the reader the opportunity to ask herself: What would I write to my "younger self"?

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2006-12-24

A book full of fluff, nothing of substance...
a good book to have on the shelf but nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars Something to pass on!.......2006-06-04

I just Read Spragins amazing collection of letters and had to post this message about it. If you're looking for a meaningfull thought provoking gift this is it! This book will be cherished not just because it reveals the inner thoughts of some amazing people on our planet, but because it confirmations the inner voice in all of us that is often ignored.

This book is wonderful for young people who could use the sage advice of a mentor. It's great for people thinking about the changes they want to make in their life. It's also a good way to stimulate you to write your own letter.

After reading "Letters to My Younger Self" I wrote a letter to myself about what I wished I'd known 20 years ago. The experience was very helpfull. It allowed me to think about the past and contemplate the future in a way I hadn't before.

5 out of 5 stars A Lesson in Reflection.......2006-05-12

I found this book as I was looking for a gift for my daughter's college graduation. The concept seemed incredible to me so I grabbed it up and brought it home. Reading the letters inpired me to write my own letter. I wrote a letter to myself 23 years before, pregnant with my daughter. The process of reflection was intense for me. I cried as I remembered the fears I had--the uncertainty. My sister called as I was writing this letter and the two of us went even farther back than 23 years. We remembered each other as children--when we were unable to communicate our fears. Our conversation helped our relationship and helped me to finish my letter to myself. In the end, my letter to me became my gift to my daughter. Without this book, all this reflection would be lost.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Little, No Credibility!.......2007-01-11

Pg. 4: "China's average wage is one-thirtieth of the U.S. and its average productivity level is equally lower (and wages, in any event account for only 20% of the cost of producing textiles and 5% of the cost of producing semiconductors)." If so, manufacturers that offshore in China would be stupid; alternatively, "China: The Balance Sheet" has a serious credibility problem. I go with the latter.

Nonetheless, this is still some value to the book for its statistics. For example, the authors believe China's foreign exchange reserves reached $1 trillion in '06, far more than any other country's, and probably more than enough to make serious improvement in its pollution and poverty problems. By 2050, China's economy is projected to be the world's largest; foreign investment only accounts for 5% of its capital growth - the Chinese savings rate of about 33% is more than enough to handle China's growth with money left over.

As for social services, "The Balance Sheet" asserts a mid-90's adult literacy rate of about 80% (vs. 50% in India) and graduates 800,000 scientists and engineers/year, while spending only 2.8% of GDP on education. Healthcare accounts for about 6% - far less than the U.S.' 16%.

Only 16% of China's land is arable, and most of its population lives on it. China's leaders are pressured to improve employment to absorb those leaving rural China, as well as those 40% released from state-jobs (including 80% from state-owned manufacturers).

Bergsten et al are most concerned about the possibility of conflict between the U.S. and China re Taiwan, and they point out that China uses its political (U.N. Security Council membership) and economic muscle to "encourage" others to support it re Taiwan.

5 out of 5 stars China Background.......2006-12-19

I haven't read this book but have read several others by Nick Lardy and studied with him at Yale. I disagee with several reviewers who characterize Nick and his colleagues as ignorant about China and are simply imposing a western view. Nick was studying China and the economy (in Chinese) long before it was a popular subject and is intimately familiar with the country's economy. In a country where data is often obscured by politics, he has done an excellent job of piecing together disparate facts to achieve a coherent whole. He may be skeptical, but he's often correct.

3 out of 5 stars A book for politicians!.......2006-11-05

I find this book extremely dull because it is mainly made up of statements. But then I realise that, written by government think tanks, this book is for politicians.

If you are a general reader and want to understand how China is affecting the world, I recommend China Shakes the World or China Inc. And if are interested in the recent history of China (pre-1978), read Wild Swans.

If you are a business person and want to understand how to do business in China, I recommend The China Executive by Dr Wei Wang.

1 out of 5 stars Another American type of arrogance.......2006-10-27

I can't agree with . Shih "M.Smith"'s review even more. I just can't stand the arrogance tone shown in this book. I got a feeling that the authors simply don't like the progress in China. It seems like the authors are simply trying to minimizing the progress China made and relishing the problems China has.

I seriously doubt the authors ever read any Chinese sources or talk to any Chinese scholar. The authors seem to imply that if the Chinese to follow the American way, then they will never succeed. True, China has a tons of problems. But the Chinese leaders and Chinese people are trying their best to solve them. What annoys me is that some of these authors seem to relish over the fact that China has so many problems

You won't get that much new info about China in this book. Yea, China has tons of problems. Who doesn't know. The authors are trying to answer the most complex questions of China with simplistic answers.

2 out of 5 stars Typical American bias.......2006-10-26

Well, what can I say about this book? With a due respect to the authors, it's the same usual American bias toward developing countries. As an American living and working in China for the past 2 years:

1)It's hard for Americans/Westerners to understand how business is done in China? Well, my answer it's because China is NOT in the West and Chinese people are not westerners. Try learning the language first, be respectful, and don't be so obnoxious.
2)This is the same background noise that I hear from overeducated ideologues: If a country is not like the US, then it must be wrong. I guess the Chinese should have a 4th world healthcare system like the US?
3)I personally feel that some authors wish China to stay poor so Madonna can have a concert there and pretend that the rich countries care. Well, maybe Africa, but not China.
4)Just because you watch CNN, FOX, and NBC, it does not make you an expert.
5)Just because you went to an Ivy League school, it does not make you a genius about other countries and cultures. As matter of fact, it does not make you a genius (period)
6)US should comment less on China and worry about the pointless war in Iraq, the death of our soldiers for a pointless cause, broken US healthcare, outsourcing of the American jobs, broken borders, broken education system, children killing each other at schools...and the list goes on.
7)China has many societal problems; please tell me something I don't know. China is working on it, it takes time, and they are not magicians.
8)If China is so awful please don't do business there nor go visit there. For the fact that there are SO many foreign investments there, makes all business executives and companies from the West idiots.

2 out of 5 stars Comment on Jaundice and breastfeeding.......2007-02-02

HI, I was just browsing through this book online and I came across the paragraph on jaundice and breastfeeding. This information was supremely inaccurate on this particular subject. The book says that breastfeeding makes jaundice worse and that you will have to stop nursing for your child to be cured of it. I am a very well read La Leche league member and breastfeeding is well known to reverse jaundice by helping your baby to excrete the bilirubin build up. The more often you nurse the faster your baby gets rid of the dead red blood cells. It is the best treatment for jaundice despite was this book says. Stopping brestfeeding during the crucial first weeks is dangerous for your baby's nutrition and immunity and bad for mom in terms of losing your milk supply and suffering engorgement or mastitis. Other than that topic I didn't read the rest of the book so it may otherwise be a good book.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS book..........2007-01-17

We love this book. Except for the oysters (my kids just don't get into the texture), we follow everything on this book and our kids are SO MUCH healthier than their friends. They eat better at home AND they make healthier choices when they go to parties/events, as they are not used to so much sugar! I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to help their kids improve their immunity through diet.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Moms.......2007-01-06

I found two things to be most helpful about this book: 1) the information on the essential fatty acids that young children need in their diets from flax oil, evening primrose, cod liver oil, etc, especially if they have allergies; and 2) the specific doses of certain vitamins and minerals for each age group.

My son's allergies to milk and wheat are gone, in part, I believe because I introduced flaxseed oil into his diet nine months ago as result of reading this book. Flaxseed oil, I found is the easiest to incorporate into a young child's diet because it's readily available at health food stores and it doesn't have any taste. I generously poured it onto my son's oatmeal every morning and it provided a good source of fat for him and, in my opinion, played a role in eliminating his allergies. Evening primrose and cod liver oils were a little tougher to be consistent with, but if your child has severe allergies, it's a small price to pay for the potential positive outcome.

As for vitamins and minerals, Dr. Galland has specific recommendations for safe upper dosing levels for different age groups. (Who knew that a 2-3 year old can have up to 1000mg/day of vitamin C as long as his tummy will tolerate it?)

I also found the chapter on nutrition for pregnant and nursing moms to be really helpful (for example, too much of the mineral manganese in the mother's diet can be toxic to a nursing infant up to six weeks of age).

The main concern for me, however, had to do with Dr. Galland's recommendation for so much soy in children's diets. There has recently been much controversy over the safety of soy for kids because of the high amounts of isoflavones or naturally occuring plant-based estrogen. Babies on soy formula have been observed as young as three years old to go into puberty, it is believed, due to the estrogen in soy. [...] So I wonder if Dr. Galland were to write an updated or revised version of this book, if he would still recommend so much soy for children.

At any rate, the book is a brilliant reference point for moms and it's easy to pick and choose what is doable and helpful for your child and lifestyle. I consider it a valuable and insightful must-read for every mom. Thanks, Dr. Galland, for sharing your expertise on child nutrition. It's so refreshing to hear from nutritionally oriented MDs who don't resort to medication for every problem.

5 out of 5 stars It's not that hard & a great book on eczema........2006-10-25

Why feed your kids something that actually depletes the nutrition you are trying so hard to give them [such as hydrogenated oils which prevent your child's body from absorbing other nutrients it needs]?

This book makes it clear what kid's need & what they don't need. I found the explanation of which vitamins/minerals can be too much - blocking absorption of other necessary nutrients - very helpful. Everyone I have turned on to the book has loved it!

Another thing I found helpful was the chapter on what to start feeding your 6 month - 1 yr. old. It lists what to start them on & what to hold off on & explains why. This is far more detailed than our pediatrician's information. The prenatal chapter is good as well & I wish I had this book when I was pregnant.

Especially easy & helpful is the information on which supplements are beneficail for your child's specific needs/problems like hyperactivey, yeast infections, eczema, cradle cap, fatigue, diabetes ect..

It's really not that hard. It's very basic nutritional information just well explained. It's really not difficult to feed your kids & yourself basic whole foods. Read the labels! You may quickly realize these are lifestyle changes that you want to make since it is so beneficial to your child's health & development of their brain, eyes, etc.

Great format & an easy read.
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE FOUND ON ECZEMA FOR CHILDREN OR ADULTS.

I also recommend:
Chemical-Free Kids: How to Safeguard Your Child's Diet and Environment by Allan Magaziner, Linda Bonvie, and Anthony Zolezzi
This book better explains the importance of organic foods among other things.
Another great format & an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-10-19

I agree with one reviewer who said that it is difficult to pull off. But, I will still give this one 5 Stars. First I never knew how much important EFAs are and this book explains that well. Second it talks about tackling EFA and other mineral defficiencies for kids of various ages starting from Prenatal(pregnancy). I love the format in which this was written. Very easy to refer. My three and a half yr old is a very picky eater. I might not make her eat all the healthy stuff thats said in the book. But I started rubbing FLAX oil onto her skin, and her eczema is getting better.

The book also tells you about anti-nutrients. I now think a little before giving junk food to my kid. Recipes sound good but I never tried them yet. Hopefully I will get my kid to eat atleast a few of those. Highly recomment to parents who worry why your kid gets sick more often and suffers more than all the rest of the neighbourhood kids.

Book Description

Struggling with weight gain? Plagued by fatigue? Suffering from joint pain? According to preeminent clinical nutritionist Dr. Shari Lieberman, these symptoms are among the hallmarks of a little-known but surprisingly common sensitivity to gluten, a protein in certain grains. Dr. Lieberman has been investigating gluten sensitivity for more than 20 years. In her experience, eliminating gluten can alleviate many troubling symptoms for which doctors often cant find a cause, as well as chronic conditions for which mainstream medicine offers little hope of reliefincluding rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, lupus, and irritable bowel syndrome. In fact, 85 percent of Dr. Liebermans clients who follow a gluten-free diet report dramatic improvement in their healthand scientific studies support her results. In The Gluten Connection, Dr. Lieberman presents a simple questionnaire to help readers assess their risk for gluten sensitivity and provides a 14-day eating plan to start them on the path to improved health and vitality. She also recommends nutritional supplements to support and maximize the therapeutic potential of a gluten-free diet.

5 out of 5 stars Should be a best seller.......2007-09-23

I received The Gluten Connection in late August , read in quickly and our family started to eliminate gluten from our diets. What a difference it has made in the way we feel in a very short time Thank you Dr. Lieberman This book should be on the best seller list!

5 out of 5 stars Something finally worked!!!.......2007-09-04

I finally have a normal digestive system after years of struggling and this book was the key to my success. After four days of eating gluten-free all of my symptoms went away and I have been doing great ever since. This is nothing short of a miracle! This is a great resource for those of us whom the medical world cannot figure out! My searching has finally paid off! Thank you, Dr. Shari!

5 out of 5 stars Help for migraine sufferers!!!.......2007-06-27

The Gluten Connection is a great book for anyone suffering with an ailment that you cannot find help in the general medical community. Shari Liberman explains how gluten sensitivity is at the root cause of many illinesses like migraines, diabetes, and even autisum. She presents a lot of research, and then offers real solutions. There are recipes, and sources for shopping for gluten-free products. This book is an excellent resource!!!

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book.......2007-05-07

The Gluten Connection is by far the most important book I have ever read. If you are gluten sensitive, it will change your life; if you are not, it will apply to someone you know. The message gets through that 30% of the population is sensitive to gluten and that the smallest amount of it results in symptoms. In my case, after 3 days of gluten-free existence, the allergies that have plagued me for 30 years disappeared entirely and the muscle tightness that has made me miserable lately was gone as well. I will be eternally grateful to the author for writing this book. Susan Hildebran

5 out of 5 stars The Gluten Connection.......2007-03-27

I found this book to be very well written and very precise in the information provided. So many of the books on gluten intolerance are sketchy to say the least. This one however, explains gluten intolerance so very well. I was very impressed and will recommend it to new celiac's. A book well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Searching for a new life direction? This is the book for you!!.......2006-08-06

I am a professional life coach and my primary focus is on life purpose and career. "Now What? 90 Days to a New Life Direction" is one the best tools out there for those seeking to find heart and meaning in their lives and work. I have been so impressed with the book that I have recommended it to clients ever since it first came out in hardback. This new paperback edition has even more valuable additions and I continue to recommend it highly.

I have been so impressed with the body of the author's work that I underwent specialized training with her to become an authorized Life Blueprint® Facilitator, coaching individuals and groups through the step-by-step NOW WHAT?(tm) program of intuitively guided questioning, exploration, and action designed to create the foundation for a more fulfilling life.

With or without a coach, this book will help guide you to finding your own "Life Blueprint" and a life of greater meaning, purpose and joy. This is a tremendous gift not only to you, but to the world!

3 out of 5 stars What about the average Joe/Jane?.......2005-11-23

Many of the examples the author used were of people who already had more than most people do (money, education, connections, high paying salaries that they are just tired of).

Check out Claire on page 11. She lives in London, wants a second home, is planning a weekend trip to the South of France, has a great job and benefits. Has a nice husband and home. What is her problem? Maybe she needs a shrink to figure out what her unhappiness really stems from but that's another book.

The author should have used cases concerning more ordinary folk. She seemed to be appealing to upper class, globe trotting, burnt out executives who are whining because they feel they are missing out on something. Maybe that cute little pony they didn't get as a child.

Claire...try yoga, buy a pony....get a grip.

5 out of 5 stars "It" Girl Laura Berman Fortgang Gives Process to Purpose.......2005-03-08

Laura Berman Fortgang really gets it...and knows how to give it back. Having read all of her books, I love that Now What? guides us through the process of discovering how our own truths yield meaningful, productive results -- for ourselves and our clients. She reminds us, "It's not what you do, but who you are when you are doing it." To learn from Laura's years of experience as a Master Coach, industry pioneer, author, and mentor is the best gift I have ever given myself. Everyone will discover something valuable for themselves at the end of their 90 days. Thanks, Laura.

5 out of 5 stars Big Dreams come in baby steps.......2005-02-22

Living by an inner compass is easier said than done. Laura Berman Fortgang provides sound advice, homework, and a mixture of intellect and intuition in outlining how 90 days of focused intent towards a life direction can unfold. What impressed me most about this book was that Fortgang shared her own story of risk when changing her career from actress to life coach. If you want to read about someone who has done the groundwork she prescribes, this book is a great choice. The content is broken down in week-by-week and offers feedback so the reader can self-manage a transitional program on their own. Fortgang also provides a variety of resources the financial nuts and bolts of a career switch. The tone is very down-to-earth, humorous, and engaging. A fluid and insightful read for people who feel like a caterpillar in their careers and are ready to commit to a 90-day cocoon period. Caution: if you want to emerge a career butterfly with this program, you must have a self-discipline to do with full force and enthusiasm what Fortgang suggest. Her book is not a passive self-actualization process ... but a "get off your ass and go for it with measurable results" career planning workout.

5 out of 5 stars Now What: 90 Days to a New Life Direction-A MUST-READ.......2005-02-18

This is one of the best and most enjoyable books I've read. It's straight forward, will get you thinking about what you love, and REALLY gives PLENTY of practical guidance on how to get there. It's a must-read for anyone serious about getting passion back into their lives.

I got this book and it definetly is like a refference guide, it does not go into depth and just reccomends the obvius, or describes what dif. vitamins are for, I bought at the same time TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR FERTILITY and it did give me a lot of information I did not know about our cycles, and now I am more knowledgable of as the name states: I FEEL IN CHARGE!!! and know what is going on in my body on a daily basis, a GREAT BOOK! 5 out of 5 stars Helped Us Get Pregnant! .......2006-01-13

I'm 39- my husbands 43 - and we had all but given up hope on getting pregnant. We were about to start seeing a fertilty expert, when a woman in my office told me about this book. She was my age, followed the plans and conceived within 7 months. I decided to give it a try! I used the nutrition advice, diet advice, and made some of the lifestyle changes, as well as changing some habits that I was surprised to learn could affect my fertility. Just as I was about to give up hope - I FOUND OUT I"M PREGNANT! Yay! It took about 8 months - but we did it on our own, without any fertilty experts. This book is well worth the price - and it's worth giving it a try before you sign off for the expensive IVF or other treatments. I read some of the other reviews before buying and they almost convinced me not to - but my friend was so sure it would help me, ( she had given her copy to her sister-in-law!) I decided to buy it anyway. I'm so glad I did! It wasn't scary - but it was realistic and made me see how important small changes can be! Buy it! It might work for you too! Good LUCK!

Don't waste your money! It states the obvious. Hey, if you want to get pregnant, don't drink, smoke or do drugs. Nothing else about this book useful...

1 out of 5 stars This book is not for the average couple..........2005-12-26

Aleksandra is obviously involved in the publication of this book somehow. Why this moron feels the defensive need to attack other reviewers is beyond me, and downright pathetic. Why do you have to call other people uneducated? Isn't the average reader allowed to post their opinions? You're a desperate loser and a pathetic excuse for a fellow human.

My wife and I bought this book last year hoping it would give us some basic answers to some very basic questions. I agree that the fertilization of a hamster egg is of little consequence to the average couple. We found our money was better spent on "Taking Control of Your Fertility." It offered us very basic information. We were pregnant the following month. Spend your money there. Don't listen to the agenda-pushing moron below!

Book Description

Enron was once the seventh largest company on the Fortune 500, but after the greatest business scandal of a generation and one of the biggest of the last century, Enron took bankruptcy and essentially blinked out of existence following a wave of revelations of accounting regularities and securities fraud. Headlines soon linked Global Crossing, Tyco, WorldCom, Adelphia, HealthSouth and other companies to similar frauds, prompting Congress in June 2002 to pass the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), the most significant securities law changes since passage of the original federal securities laws in 1933 and 1934. Sarbanes-Oxley could ultimately prove to be one of America's most significant economic regulations. This short guide explains the ins-and-outs of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Students will be able to understand this major legislative change effecting CEOs, CFOs, and other financially responsible officers.
