Poorly written and poorly thought out.......2007-04-16
I used both this book and the Priceton Review, and I have to say the Princeton Review one is much better.
The Barron's one appears to have lots of practice questions, but really, towards the middle of the book they leave out free-response questions. Instead, they tell you to solve the question that was provided in the middle of that chapter.
It was as if they wrote this on a deadline and rushed through the entire thing. The content seemed inadequate and explanations were poor. Their attempts to make funny remarks to appeal to the teenage audience were often inappropriate or left the reader confused.
Barron's is usually my first choice for AP prep, but the AP economics book is one exception.
However, you might want to buy this anyway since it comes with 2 practice tests that you could use.
Practice tests are lacking.......2006-07-17
When compared to the Princtons review book, I found that the tests in the Barrons book were too easy. The rest of the book is well laid ou though and explanations are clear and concise. I took the micro and macro tests in may 06 and got 5s on both. But this was mostly because of the princeton book & going online to the ap website.

AP Economics teacher highly recommends.......2005-09-04
As an AP Economics teacher, I recommended 5 Steps to a 5 to my students this past year. The students gave it high marks for its thorough review of both micro and macro economics. The author provides strong pointers for each concept and plenty of practice questions. The students' results were outstanding: a 100 percent pass rate on micro and 98 percent on macro, with mostly 4s and 5s on the two exams. My students worked hard throughout the year, but this review guide helped a lot with test preparation. Having used the Princeton "Cracking the AP" book in previous years, I found 5 steps to a 5 to be the superior review book.
Book Description
David Romer’s Advanced Macroeconomics, 3e is the standard text and the starting point for graduate macro courses and helps lay the groundwork for students to begin doing research in macroeconomics and monetary economics. A series of formal models are used to present and analyze important macroeconomic theories. The theories are supplemented by examples of relevant empirical work, which illustrate the ways that theories can be applied and tested. This well-respected and well-known text is unique in the marketplace.

Best Advanced Macroeconomics ever written.......2006-11-04
The Advanced Macroeconomics from Professor David Romer is in my opinion the best Advanced Macroeconomics textbook ever written, due to some points:
- It treats in a simple manner several issues regarding the most advanced issues on Macroeconomics,
- It's updated and varied,
- It's accessible for new comers in the field.
unfortunately there's nothing better.......2005-11-01
One might divide economics books into two categories: those that are strong on explanation and intution, and those that are strong on proof. This book has neither, and unfortunately it appears to be the standard in graduate macroeconomics courses. I find myself wondering if it deliberately chooses the most obscure way to write its equations. For instance, in the Solow and Ramsey models, Romer retains the population and household variables throughout the entire proof rather than simply write them in intensive form. If you're reading the book after a lecture, it stands a chance of confusing you, especially because it tries to avoid optimal control theory (not a good idea!).
A lot of fluff, very little meat.......2005-10-21
This book was a required text for my first semester of the Economics PhD core. I found the book to be a terrible disaster. Supposedly this book is a more basic approach to advanced macroeconomics, but I found I comprehended higher-level texts with greater ease than this book. The wording is very obtuse, which makes understanding the verbage difficult. Once you get past the words and understand the meaning, however, the explanations are also very inadequate given the complexity of the material.
All in all, I have read my fair share of poorly-written textbooks, but I think this one tops them all.
A good survey.......2005-09-27
Different people with different expectations and needs for this book tend to view it differently. This book didn't delve deeply into the formal theory and is appropriate to gain a panorama of macroeconomic theories. Those who're scolding excruciatingly this book please get back to thinking a little about the relationship of economics and mathematics/statistics. The economics studies the a facet of the social phenomenon. The mathematics and statistics act as a way of thinking and deduction imposed on this phenomenon. We can still talk about economics without lots of formal theory and rigorous deduction. We then are just talking about the phenomenon itself. Anyone who has done lots of modeling would come to terms with this observation.
Disappointment .......2005-05-10
Sharing the sentiments of the two previous posters, I think this book is a disappointment. For example, the second macro model presented by Romer -- the Ramsey-Cass-Koopman model -- is absent of optimal control theory. Setting up the Hamiltonian and showing how to dervive the Euler's equation of the optimal consumption path of the representative consumer would be a better treatment of the topics. This book, I think, lacks basic techincal tools essential for econ Ph.D. students. I am a microeconomist-wanna-be, this book makes me wonder what on earth is macroeconomics -- something very mysterious to me. Who are going to write a better text for graduate-level macro for non-macroeconomists???

Not too helpful.......2007-07-31
This book has good graphs and short descriptions, especially if you're looking for the quick definition of an economics term, but overall, it is too general and not helpful enough when you are studying for the AP Economics exam. I used it to review, but the book did not go into enough detail to really be of use to me. Also, there were many instances where the notes in the CliffsAP book contradicted with what I had learned in my economics course and in various impressive, reliable textbooks.
I do not recommend using this book. It was quite a waste. I have heard that "5 Steps to a 5 on the AP exam" is better.
Poorly written, not edited.......2006-05-11
This book was horrible. I bought it for the practice tests, and not only did they repeat the same questions in the same tests on occasion, there were many cases where words were mispelled, or key parts of the problems (such as graphs) were left out completely. This book was of shoddy construction and should be avoided as a tool to study for the economics exams.
This book is not good for a CLEP exam........2006-04-30
I guess I shouldn't be complaining because I was attempting to pass the macroeconomics CLEP exam with the AP cliff notes book. The reason I was doing this is because I could not find a study guide for it. So if you are looking for a CLEP study guide don't get this book, I did pass with a 54 and I needed a 50, but it was pure luck.
Economic AP Cliff Notes.......2006-03-20
Haven't reviewed the book as yet but am looking forward to using the Cliff Notes in conjuction with an AP Macro and Micro Ecomonics book to prepare for a CLEP test.
scatterbrain.......2005-04-28
Perhaps i shouldn't be complaining because i didn't actually take a microecon course and i'm trying to wing the test by using this book. however, i found this book confusing and poorly organized becuase there are times when terminology isn't consistent and i feel like i'm reading a bunch of random essays put together. fragmented lessons with things in between. one good thing about this book is that there are a few chapters that are written very well and are very clear. however, the more confusing topics have confusing chapters. i wish i hadn't bought this book and that i'd gotten a different one.
Book Description
This valuable text provides a comprehensive introduction to VAR modelling and how it can be applied. In particular, the author focuses on the properties of the Cointegrated VAR model and its implications for macroeconomic inference when data are non-stationary. The text provides a number of insights into the links between statistical econometric modelling and economic theory and gives a thorough treatment of identification of the long-run and short-run structure as well as of the common stochastic trends and the impulse response functions, providing in each case illustrations of applicability. This book presents the main ingredients of the Copenhagen School of Time-Series Econometrics in a transparent and coherent framework. The distinguishing feature of this school is that econometric theory and applications have been developed in close cooperation. The guiding principle is that good econometric work should take econometrics, institutions, and economics seriously. The author uses a single data set throughout most of the book to guide the reader through the econometric theory while also revealing the full implications for the underlying economic model. To test ensure full understanding the book concludes with the introduction of two new data sets to combine readers understanding of econometric theory and economic models, with economic reality.

Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to the purchasing function.......2005-08-30
This easy-to-read text quickly covers the key activities related to purchasing and inventory management; including everything from reorder techniques, to negotiating techniques, to purchasing law. The style of this book is reminiscent of texts published in the early part of the 20th century that focused on quickly getting new managers and clerks up to speed on specific business topics. It avoids the hype of most business books and the pretentious style of most college texts by sticking with short, concise, plain English, treatments of the multitude of topics covered.
The nominal price of this book is a purchasing lesson in itself. This book is a bargain.
Great book.......2005-08-05
I used this review book to study for the AP Microeconomics exam and was pleased by its coverage of all the necessary topics. Even though the book looks small, there really is no need for more material. When I took the Microeconomics exam, I was surprised by how easy it was. To study for the exam's free response section, be sure to check out previous College Board AP Micro free response exams and their answers. They follow the same basic pattern of topics and form of questions. I received a 5 on the exam. I will use the book again this year for the Macroeconomics section.
Horrible.......2005-05-11
Upon studying for the AP Macroeconomics test, I found the Barrons book to be useless. The sample tests were a joke because they are nothing like the actual AP tests. I took an AP Macroeconomics course in school and the Barrons book did nothing to enhance my knowledge. I would highly recommend the Kaplan AP Economics book because it has challenging sample questions with full explanations to the answers (unlike Barrons). This book does not help one to get a 5 on the AP Macroeconomics test.
Exactly what a student needs........2004-06-11
I decided to independently study for the AP Macroeconomics exam my junior year. I had not taken any classes previously that would have helped me on the test. In addition to the Barron's book, I purchased the Princeton Review and the Cliffs Notes books. There is simply no comparsion-- the Barron's book is FAR superior. It does not waste the reader's time delving into topics not on the exam. It covers exactly what the student needs to know.
The other two books I mentioned are excessively light on some topics, and I am confident that if I would have taken the test with one or both of them, I would not have done nearly as well. But the Barron's book gave me everyting I needed.
At the end of each chapter(as is the case with all Barron's AP books) there are 15 multiple-choice questions covering the material from the chapter and a free response question. I found these questions relevant and instructive. The sample AP exam in the back of the book is well done.
Thanks to this book, I am confident I got a 5 on the AP Macroeconomics exam. There was just one multiple choice question I didn't recognize. Highly recommended.
I independent studied using this book.......2002-10-21
I never took the AP microeconomics course offered at my school. I just used this book and the PR book. Overall, this book is great in that it teaches all the information needed to ace the test. However, the questions in the practice test are not reflective of those on the real test. Also, sometimes, this book delves too deeply into the subject. It provides far more information than is necessary to get a 5 on the test. It is also more boring than the Princeton Review book. Information is presented in paragraph forms rather than in bulleted form, making it more unorganized. However, knowing this book back to front will easily get the job of getting a 5 on the AP test accomplished.

Excellent prepartory material for the Praxis Economics Test .......2006-04-04
I highly recommend this study guide. I first purchase Barron's AP Economics by mistake-- I read the reviews and one of the reviewer's suggested Kaplan. The reviewer was right. Barron was not what I needed; therefore, I purchased Kaplan. It was exactly what I needed for my situation. I am a special education teacher who has never taken an economics class before, but I wanted to take the Praxis economics test to teach a secondary regular education class. I am so thankful --- I passed!!!

lots of help........2006-08-14
This book helped me get a four on my ap econ exam. Without it, I probably wouldn't have done as well. A great study guide!
Book Description
Macroeconometric models, in many ways the flagships of the economist's profession in the 1960s, came under increasing attack from both theoretical economist and practitioners in the late 1970s. Critics referred to their lack of microeconomic theoretical foundations, ad hoc models of expectations, lack of identification, neglect of dynamics and non-stationarity, and poor forecasting properties. By the start of the 1990s, the status of macroeconometric models had declined markedly, and had fallen completely out of, and with, academic economics. Nevertheless, unlike the dinosaurs to which they often have been likened, macroeconometric models have never completely disappeared from the scene. This book describes how and why the discipline of macroeconometric modelling continues to play a role for economic policymaking by adapting to changing demands, in response, for instance, to new policy regimes like inflation targeting. Model builders have adopted new insights from economic theory and taken advantage of the methodological and conceptual advances within time series econometrics over the last twenty years. The modelling of wages and prices takes a central part in the book as the authors interpret and evaluate the last forty years of international research experience in the light of the Norwegian 'main course' model of inflation in a small open economy. The preferred model is a dynamic model of incomplete competition, which is evaluated against alternatives as diverse as the Phillips curve, Nickell-Layard wage curves, the New Keynesian Phillips curve, and monetary inflation models on data from the Euro area, the UK, and Norway. The wage price core model is built into a small econometric model for Norway to analyse the transmission mechanism and to evaluate monetary policy rules. The final chapter explores the main sources of forecast failure likely to occur in a practical modelling situation, using the large-scale nodel RIMINI and the inflation models of earlier chapters as case studies.
