Poorly written and poorly thought out.......2007-04-16
I used both this book and the Priceton Review, and I have to say the Princeton Review one is much better.
The Barron's one appears to have lots of practice questions, but really, towards the middle of the book they leave out free-response questions. Instead, they tell you to solve the question that was provided in the middle of that chapter.
It was as if they wrote this on a deadline and rushed through the entire thing. The content seemed inadequate and explanations were poor. Their attempts to make funny remarks to appeal to the teenage audience were often inappropriate or left the reader confused.
Barron's is usually my first choice for AP prep, but the AP economics book is one exception.
However, you might want to buy this anyway since it comes with 2 practice tests that you could use.
Practice tests are lacking.......2006-07-17
When compared to the Princtons review book, I found that the tests in the Barrons book were too easy. The rest of the book is well laid ou though and explanations are clear and concise. I took the micro and macro tests in may 06 and got 5s on both. But this was mostly because of the princeton book & going online to the ap website.

AP Economics teacher highly recommends.......2005-09-04
As an AP Economics teacher, I recommended 5 Steps to a 5 to my students this past year. The students gave it high marks for its thorough review of both micro and macro economics. The author provides strong pointers for each concept and plenty of practice questions. The students' results were outstanding: a 100 percent pass rate on micro and 98 percent on macro, with mostly 4s and 5s on the two exams. My students worked hard throughout the year, but this review guide helped a lot with test preparation. Having used the Princeton "Cracking the AP" book in previous years, I found 5 steps to a 5 to be the superior review book.

Excellent companion to the textbook.......2005-09-20
Further clarifies a lot of the difficult concepts presented in the book. Great for some extra help.
i didnt know it wasnt the actual book.......2005-09-16
i bought this book thinking it was the actual text book, but it was really just the study guide. i had to go out and buy the real book from school for 100$.

Macroeconomics (3rd Edition).......2004-03-03
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have some understanding of macroeconomics. This book can be used as a supplemental text or for independent study or as review/reference material. The author, for the most part, presents clear and understandable concepts in a concise manner.
As far as prerequisites are concerned, some basic knowledge of economics and money and banking will make reading this book easier and more understandable. Although calculus is not required, some knowledge of basic or college algebra is helpful.
Since this book covers intermediate macroeconomics primarily intended for those at the undergraduate, upper division level, college students, especially, should find this book useful as a supplement to their textbooks. It may help to clarify problems that students may encounter in their course work. In the words of the author: "The book can be used by undergraduates or graduate business students as a supplement to current standard texts or by instructors as an independent text supplemented by empirical and/or policy readings. The book may also be useful to graduate economics students as a review of the analytical core of macroeconomic theory."
However, the benefits derived from this book need not be limited only to college students. Those wishing to use this book for independent self-study can, with some extra effort, gain valuable information since the author does a fairly good job of presenting in a clear manner the fundamental concepts of macroeconomics.
At the beginning of each chapter, the author gives a chapter summary and outline. The chapter summaries briefly present the concepts that will be further explained in the main text. The outlines are a repetition of the same sections that are listed in the table of contents. Furthermore, in order to reinforce the concepts presented in the main text, the author not only provides the usual solved problems but also includes multiple choice and true or false questions which give the student a wide range of practice.
However, there are some weaknesses of this book which readers should be aware. First, due to the brevity of some of the concepts presented, it may be advantageous to refer to other economics books in order to get more in-depth information, and thereby, a better understanding. This is particularly true for those using this book for independent self-study. Second, some terms and concepts are defined and presented for the first time in the "Solved Problems" section at the end of the chapter rather than in the main text. Third, this book does not contain a glossary.

Not too helpful.......2007-07-31
This book has good graphs and short descriptions, especially if you're looking for the quick definition of an economics term, but overall, it is too general and not helpful enough when you are studying for the AP Economics exam. I used it to review, but the book did not go into enough detail to really be of use to me. Also, there were many instances where the notes in the CliffsAP book contradicted with what I had learned in my economics course and in various impressive, reliable textbooks.
I do not recommend using this book. It was quite a waste. I have heard that "5 Steps to a 5 on the AP exam" is better.
Poorly written, not edited.......2006-05-11
This book was horrible. I bought it for the practice tests, and not only did they repeat the same questions in the same tests on occasion, there were many cases where words were mispelled, or key parts of the problems (such as graphs) were left out completely. This book was of shoddy construction and should be avoided as a tool to study for the economics exams.
This book is not good for a CLEP exam........2006-04-30
I guess I shouldn't be complaining because I was attempting to pass the macroeconomics CLEP exam with the AP cliff notes book. The reason I was doing this is because I could not find a study guide for it. So if you are looking for a CLEP study guide don't get this book, I did pass with a 54 and I needed a 50, but it was pure luck.
Economic AP Cliff Notes.......2006-03-20
Haven't reviewed the book as yet but am looking forward to using the Cliff Notes in conjuction with an AP Macro and Micro Ecomonics book to prepare for a CLEP test.
scatterbrain.......2005-04-28
Perhaps i shouldn't be complaining because i didn't actually take a microecon course and i'm trying to wing the test by using this book. however, i found this book confusing and poorly organized becuase there are times when terminology isn't consistent and i feel like i'm reading a bunch of random essays put together. fragmented lessons with things in between. one good thing about this book is that there are a few chapters that are written very well and are very clear. however, the more confusing topics have confusing chapters. i wish i hadn't bought this book and that i'd gotten a different one.

Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to the purchasing function.......2005-08-30
This easy-to-read text quickly covers the key activities related to purchasing and inventory management; including everything from reorder techniques, to negotiating techniques, to purchasing law. The style of this book is reminiscent of texts published in the early part of the 20th century that focused on quickly getting new managers and clerks up to speed on specific business topics. It avoids the hype of most business books and the pretentious style of most college texts by sticking with short, concise, plain English, treatments of the multitude of topics covered.
The nominal price of this book is a purchasing lesson in itself. This book is a bargain.
Great book.......2005-08-05
I used this review book to study for the AP Microeconomics exam and was pleased by its coverage of all the necessary topics. Even though the book looks small, there really is no need for more material. When I took the Microeconomics exam, I was surprised by how easy it was. To study for the exam's free response section, be sure to check out previous College Board AP Micro free response exams and their answers. They follow the same basic pattern of topics and form of questions. I received a 5 on the exam. I will use the book again this year for the Macroeconomics section.
Horrible.......2005-05-11
Upon studying for the AP Macroeconomics test, I found the Barrons book to be useless. The sample tests were a joke because they are nothing like the actual AP tests. I took an AP Macroeconomics course in school and the Barrons book did nothing to enhance my knowledge. I would highly recommend the Kaplan AP Economics book because it has challenging sample questions with full explanations to the answers (unlike Barrons). This book does not help one to get a 5 on the AP Macroeconomics test.
Exactly what a student needs........2004-06-11
I decided to independently study for the AP Macroeconomics exam my junior year. I had not taken any classes previously that would have helped me on the test. In addition to the Barron's book, I purchased the Princeton Review and the Cliffs Notes books. There is simply no comparsion-- the Barron's book is FAR superior. It does not waste the reader's time delving into topics not on the exam. It covers exactly what the student needs to know.
The other two books I mentioned are excessively light on some topics, and I am confident that if I would have taken the test with one or both of them, I would not have done nearly as well. But the Barron's book gave me everyting I needed.
At the end of each chapter(as is the case with all Barron's AP books) there are 15 multiple-choice questions covering the material from the chapter and a free response question. I found these questions relevant and instructive. The sample AP exam in the back of the book is well done.
Thanks to this book, I am confident I got a 5 on the AP Macroeconomics exam. There was just one multiple choice question I didn't recognize. Highly recommended.
I independent studied using this book.......2002-10-21
I never took the AP microeconomics course offered at my school. I just used this book and the PR book. Overall, this book is great in that it teaches all the information needed to ace the test. However, the questions in the practice test are not reflective of those on the real test. Also, sometimes, this book delves too deeply into the subject. It provides far more information than is necessary to get a 5 on the test. It is also more boring than the Princeton Review book. Information is presented in paragraph forms rather than in bulleted form, making it more unorganized. However, knowing this book back to front will easily get the job of getting a 5 on the AP test accomplished.
