Book Description

A complete, concise reference for implementing the most important features of the Cisco Catalyst family of switches

Cisco Catalyst switches, a common ingredient in many campus, metropolitan, enterprise, and service provider networks, are complex devices that require many configuration steps for proper operation. Not only are the required commands difficult to remember, but locating reference material on them also requires extensive research that is both time- consuming and difficult to complete in the field. Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration is a quick and portable reference guide to the most commonly used features that can be configured on Cisco Catalyst switches.

Derived from the authors' notes about how to configure a variety of Cisco Catalyst features during the course of their preparation for the CCIE(r) exam, Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration is an indispensable tool that helps you perform the most popular deployment tasks. From the first page, the authors zero in on quick facts, configuration steps, and explanations of configuration options in each Cisco Catalyst feature. The different variations of the Cisco Catalyst operating systems (COS and Cisco IOS(r) Software) are shown together for side-by-side comparison, making it easy to move from one Cisco Catalyst platform to another.

The book presents concise implementation advice for families of Cisco Catalyst features, including configuration fundamentals, Layer 2 interface configuration, Layer 3 interface configuration, VLANs and trunking, Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Layer 3 switching, multicast, server load balancing, access control, switch management, quality of service (QoS), and voice. Additional appendixes provide you with critical details on well-known ports and addresses, specialized switch modules, VLAN extension, and a cabling guide. The quick reference format allows you to easily locate just the information you need without searching through thousands of pages of documentation, saving you time and helping you to get the devices up and running quickly and smoothly.

Whether you are looking for a handy, portable reference to more easily configure Cisco Catalyst switches in the field, or you are preparing for CCNA(r), CCNP(r), or CCIE certification, you will find Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration to be an essential resource that will save you hours of research time.

4 out of 5 stars beginners level.......2006-03-05

I'm not writing this to discredit the book. I think it is very well done. I just think it should be made clear that this is a beginners level book. There is a lot of emphasis placed on translating cat os into native. There are also numerous examples of how to configure various topologies. I think it is very well done. However, anybody who can read and use the univercd, will have a wealth of knowledge, far beyond what can be contained in this book, within a few mouse clicks.

If you are familiar with only one of these operating systems and require knowledge of the other. This is a good buy. I always had trouble trying to interpret the logic used the catos. But, concerning gaining a deeper understanding of switching, I didn't get anything from this one.

4 out of 5 stars A good book at showing Cat configs.......2006-02-03

CiscoPress's "Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration" by Hucaby and McQuerry is a very strong attempt at documenting the configuration implementations of Cisco switches. Any Cisco Switching book is going to need to make a decision as soon as the first page - and that is how best to document the two separate and totally different versions of Cisco Catalyst operating systems - COS and OS. This book takes a different tact - and one that I think works very well. Instead of splitting up the two OS domains and describing each in their own respective sections - the authors have decided to show how to implement both types of commands at the same time. This little difference is profound in the way it helps demonstrate the use of each command and eliminates redundancy found in other all-in-one switching books.

It is important to note that this is not a Switching-101 book. You definitely need a decent understanding of the various subjects - Spanning-Tree Protocol (STP), Virtual-Trunking Protocol (VTP), etc... The book does a good job at discussing the different implementations of Vlans and Trunking (Chapter 6).

One reassuring item to note is that I did not find any typos in the book. I have used this book while studying for my CCIE R&S lab (I think a lot of CCIE candidates forget that the `S' in R&S stands for Switching). I have also used this book for real-world implantations. I feel the utilitarian value of this book is much higher than Hucaby and McQuerry's similar book on Router configuration.

I give this book 4 pings out of 5:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Everyday Switch Administrators.......2003-11-09

I am a network engineer and use the Catalyst 2900, 2950, 3500 and the 4000's on a daily basis. We do a lot of VLAN configurations, trunking using 801.q, static port access, along with other various switch configs. This book has been indispensable for my daily routines. There has not once been an instant where I couldn't find the answer to what I was trying to accomplish when configuring a Cisco Catalyst Switch. This also gives you the commands for COS and IOS and also tells you which switch supports what and which switch doesn't (example: the Catalyst 2950 supports 801.q by default, where others support ISL by default). I highly recommend this book for all your switching administrative needs.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Engineers.......2003-04-14

The author has put together a very clear and concise book which is essential for engineers. Whether using it as a reference or to read it cover to cover it is well worth the purchase. A+

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2002-11-24

This book covers 2900 Series up to 6000 Series Catalyst Switches including Catlayst 3500XL and 2900MXL Series. This book is not for CCNA wannabe's, cause it doesn't include Catalyst 1900 Series. Besides, you should know Cisco Switching before attempting to read this book. This book is more help on your day to day Cisco Catalyst administration job.

This book beats Cisco LAN Switching (CCIE Professional Development). It covers those topics that Cisco LAN Switching lacks - from Switch Functionality, SE Configuration, creating VLANs & Trunking, STP, Multilayer Switching, to QOS. More examples than LAN Switching.

This book, together with the Cisco Routers for IP Routing Little Black Book (by: Innokenty Rudenko) and Remote Access for Cisco Networks (by: William Burton and Bill Burton), your daily administration of Cisco devices will be easy as you have never imagined. Of course you need at least a CCNA Advanced Level or a CCNP level to use these three books.

I'm a CCNP/CCDA supporting Internet Data Centre / Internet Service Provider Core Routers/Distribution Switches/Access Switches and I found that this book is valuable to my daily administration tasks. I highly recommend this book for Cisco Catalyst administrators.

Effective execution takes coordinated effort. Why is this seemingly obvious fact so difficult to experience? The authors do an excellent job of illustrating how effective listening provides the starting point for a level of interaction that allows disparate views to be heard and valued.

This book allows me to be more aware of and intentional about, creating converations that search for a meaningful launching pad for strategic and tactical execution.

5 out of 5 stars Apply These Principles.......2006-04-07

I was introduced to this book by a colleague at a former employer. If you feel like you are building consensus, driving decisions or winning arguments - only to learn later that nothing is sticking "because of the other guy" - then you owe it to yourself to read this book.

The authors do an excellent job covering the theory of creating an authentic dialog where truth is spoken, beliefs are shared, perspectives understood and alignment and consensus are built. One of the key points is that communicating at this level is not always easy or comfortable, but it is essential to constructive communication.

In terms of format, the authors combine theory with a running fictitious story that is more colorful and detailed than a typical case study. Some may think the story is hokey, but I found it useful and entertaining. It also makes the book a hybrid between the cutesy (and somewhat useless - IMHO) parable format that is raging across business publishing, and pure theory, which can become dry and pedantic.

This is a very helpful book if you need to facilitate meetings to produce business results. It has helped me immensely.

5 out of 5 stars refreshing and effective.......2004-06-29

The authors have offered a refreshing and effective model for communicating. The search for an intersection of facts, views, and intent makes incredible sense. I am using this model in all of my work and making progress in creating more value and less waste. I love their vocabulary. Buy this book if you want to make a positive and significant difference in the manner in which you communicate to those you want to influence, inspire and transform.

5 out of 5 stars Outstandingly useful book on leadership and communication.......2002-11-02

Connolly and Rianoshek take the view that any issue, no matter how seemingly intractable, can be resolved through effective communication. The ideas and tools in this book back up that view. The writing is clear and the organization will make it available to a variety of learning styles. Excellent book!

Book Description

End-to-end QoS deployment techniques for Cisco Catalyst series switches

Quality of service (QoS) is the set of techniques designed to manage network resources. QoS refers to the capability of a network to provide better service to selected network traffic over various LAN and WAN technologies. The primary goal of QoS is to provide flow priority, including dedicated bandwidth, controlled jitter and latency (required by some interactive and delay-sensitive traffic), and improved loss characteristics.

While QoS has become an essential technology for those organizations rolling out a new generation of network applications such as real-time voice communications and high-quality video delivery, most of the literature available on this foundation technology for current and future business applications focuses on IP QoS. Equally important is the application of QoS in the campus LAN environment, which is primarily responsible for delivering traffic to the desktop.

Cisco Catalyst QoS is the first book to concentrate exclusively on the application of QoS in the campus environment. This practical guide provides you with insight into the operation of QoS on the most popular and widely deployed LAN devices: the Cisco Catalyst family of switches. Leveraging the authors' extensive expertise at Cisco in the support of Cisco Catalyst switches and QoS deployment, the book presents QoS from the campus LAN perspective. It explains why QoS is essential in this environment in order to achieve a more deterministic behavior for traffic when implementing voice, video, or other delay-sensitive applications. Through architectural overviews, configuration examples, real-world deployment case studies, and summaries of common pitfalls, you will understand how QoS operates, the different components involved in making QoS possible, and how QoS can be implemented on the various Cisco Catalyst platforms to enable truly successful end-to-end QoS applications.

This book is part of the Networking Technology Series from Cisco Press, which offers networking professionals valuable information for constructing efficient networks, understanding new technologies, and building successful careers.

4 out of 5 stars Good resource. A little light on LAN QoS........2007-05-07

Knowing what a big topic QoS was, I purchased this book as an introduction and overview. Since then, I have used it almost weekly as a reference. The first few chapters are invaluable in planning QoS deployments, however, the chapters on LAN QoS could use some elaboration. Most of this book focuses on router-based applications, and while IOS switches are similar, the queueing and monitoring configurations are completely different than routers. I'd also like to see some more information on LAN best practices contained within. In general, this is a great resource for a topic that can be challenging at first glance for the typical routing/switching engineer.

5 out of 5 stars Best-of-class book for utilizing QoS on Cisco Cats!.......2006-02-02

"Cisco Catalyst QoS" by Flannagan, Froom, and Turek is one of a few books by Cisco dedicated to one platform and one feature of that platform. As a long-time CCIE candidate, I have found this book very useful in complementing my studies of the Catalyst 3500. But this book does much more than simply discuss the 3500.

In particular, items I found important:
* The book starts out by giving an in-depth review of how QoS is applied to the Catalysts. For example, the excellent diagram on page 13 shows how different entities may all employ QoS services (CAC, FRTS, cRTP, etc..)
* Next, the book moves through the different QoS components - from scheduling, to token bucket mechanisms, traffic-shaping and policing.
* The beauty of the book is shown around page 150 - the CoS to DSCP map. This is a sparsely documented area of QoS, and the only reference outside of Cisco (that I've found) which succinctly explains the layer 2 to layer 3 mappings for Catalyst IOS.
* The book's 2nd part is dedicated to "Advanced QoS Concepts" (as if the concepts explored in the first 120 pages were not advanced enough!). This includes chapters on QoS for the beast of Catalysts - 6500s and 4000 Catalysts.

I have not found many typos in this book, but one typo that made me do a double take is on page 125, 1st paragraph - "The match-all option is a logical OR operation" The match-all operation is a logical ALL operation (match-any is logical OR operation).

If I had to pick a `Top 10' list of CiscoPress books, this would probably make the cut. The book discusses subject areas just not duplicated in other books. And, as the 3500 switch is part of the CCIE lab as of the writing of the book, it is a very useful tool for advanced configuration understanding.

I give this book 5 pings out of 5:
!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good Book on QoS.......2005-07-09

This book is a must have for anyone wanting solid information on Quality of Service performed on the Cisco Catalyst series switches. This is some of the best QoS reference material around, and it' s less then 400 pages. You can't beat the value this book offers.

Being a CCIE candidate and having attempted the lab once I have read quite a few books and articles on Quality of Service. I enjoyed every page of this book for the detail and wealth of information it contained within its chapters. The first chapter of this book is dedicated to providing the foundation for the various types QoS. You are given easy to understand explanations on (DiffServ, Integrated Services, WFQ. PQ, CQ, WRED,etc) It's by far the best information I have ever read. The authors do an incredible job in explaining this to the reader. You are given reasons for implementing QoS in your network. They discuss bandwidth, jitter, types of delays, and packet loss in laymen terms. Once you have a good grasp from chapter 1, Chapter 2 builds on this. In this chapter the various types of QoS are broken down into components. This is very helpful in both learning and in the real world. You are able to completely understand which components can be used to resolve certain types of issues. Chapter 2 goes over all the QoS types, and shows the commands to implement them. The material in this chapter will allow the reader to use this information in any and all areas of QoS in any environment.

The remaining chapters are dedicated to the different types of Catalyst switches. These chapters include information on their features, QoS types supported and how to configure them. The book is written in an easy to follow layout. The QoS components are laid out for quick viewing on what features are supported on each and every switch. The authors did an great job on these chapters to help you fully understand QoS in a switching environment. There is also information on Layer 3 QoS running on the supported switches.

I believe that anyone reading this book will benefit from the information presented in here. Do you just need an easy to understand explanation of QoS? In-depth information on a specific QoS features on a certain Catalyst switch. Are you looking for a easy to use reference on Catalyst QoS features. Then book will help you in these areas and more. Grab it and read a few pages and see for yourself how indispensable this book is. The real bonus is this book is written by three CCIE's.

3 out of 5 stars Dry, but Useful..........2004-02-18

Vital Statistics:
I am reviewing Cisco Catalyst QOS: Quality of Service in Campus Networks (ISBN: 1-58705-120-6). The book is 400 pages in length and is divided into 2 sections, Fundamental QOS Concepts and Advanced QOS Concepts. It includes coverage of QOS functionality on 2900, 3500, 4000 & 6500 series Cisco Catalyst Switches. The book states that it is intended for network engineers who work with Catalysts and seek a deeper understanding of QOS. Add CCNP level switch understanding to that list, at the very least. The book's authors are Mike Flannagan, Richard Froom, and Kevin Turek, all CCIE-level engineers who work directly for Cisco in Research Triangle Park. Notice the presence of "authors", "engineers" and "research" in one sentence... a fearful combination to say the least. Buckle up, kids, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.

My Reading Experience:
I set out to read this book as an attempt to get an understanding of QOS for my CCIE studies. Oops, Rich didn't read the fine print. This book isn't really so much a book about QOS concepts in general as it is an implementation guide for utilizing QOS on a Catalyst network. Works out okay for me, though, because my company runs 4000 and 6500 series Catalysts and the information will prove quite useful as we roll out QOS. For my CCIE studies, however, I will still need to pick up a book that is somewhat more general, like maybe the Cisco DQOS Exam Certification Guide or Cisco IOS 12.0 Quality of Service. Luckily for me, the book spends the first 2 chapters teaching the underlying QOS concepts for the features that are discussed in the remainder of the book. After the first 2 chapters, the Fundamentals section is finished up with a 2-chapter overview of the QOS support on the various Catalyst platforms.

Part 2 of the book presents QOS implementation on the various Catalyst platforms. I believe the intention of the authors was for the reader to only read the specific chapters in part 2 that pertained to the specific equipment they'd be using. I say this because the chapters repeat a lot of the same information. From the standpoint of this being an implementation guide, it's good that each chapter stands on its own and you don't have to read the entire book to get an understanding of QOS as it applies to your particular Catalyst platform.

The thing that makes this book unique, and the thing which I liked most about it, is the in-depth coverage of the Catalyst 6500 series. There is a chapter dedicated to 6500 by itself, which shows both hybrid and native commands for all the QOS functions. There is also a chapter that focuses on the 6500 MSFC and Flexwan modules. The last time I checked, there was exactly one book that I knew of that had any info about the 6500, Cisco LAN Switching (CCIE Professional Development series). Since my network uses 6509's with MSFC2 and FlexWAN cards, I found those chapters to be extremely useful and will be using them to implement QOS.

If I seem wishy-washy about this title, it's because I am. My recommendation depends upon what you want to accomplish. If you want to learn QOS concepts, I'd recommend reading something else, like the Cisco DQOS Exam Certification Guide. If you're actually implementing QOS in a Catalyst network, I'd recommend this book. The writing is just a little too dry and the examples are a little too abstract. I would have liked to have seen more real-world examples in plain English. Using my 5-ping rating scale, I'll give Cisco Catalyst QOS three pings - two for the beginning of the book, and one for the 6500 coverage.

Creating Women's Networks is a comprehensive manual for female employees who truly want to accomplish as much as possible in corporate America, and employers of either gender who honestly want their entire workforce to be the best that it can be. Based on a variety of extensive studies conducted over the past 15 years by Catalyst--a respected non-profit research and advisory group "dedicated to helping women achieve their full professional potential and showing businesses how to capitalize on those talents"--it examines successful women's groups that are operating today in companies such as Kimberly-Clark, Texas Instruments, Kodak, and Dow Chemical, and offers detailed instructions for both creating new ones and increasing the effectiveness of those already in existence. Filled with checklists, charts, breakout points, and first-person suggestions that turn the advice into a hands-on program, the book follows the life cycle of the very organizations it helps to define. The first section, for example, lays out all critical initial steps like understanding the company environment, building support, and actually getting underway. The second deals with ongoing maintenance, focusing on ways to keep the coalition on track and tackle challenges that inevitably develop. --Howard Rothman

In the Introduction, we are told that "Women's networks are a phenomenon that grew out of the overlapping need of companies to reach out to the women in their organization and the critical need of women to reach out to each other." Enlightened employers recognize that both needs are immensely important. Here is a book which does indeed provide a "How-To Guide to Women and Companies." Part One explains how to design and implement a women's network. Part Two explains how to extend and strengthen that network. Then the reader is provided with a wealth of Resources which include "Catalyst's Summary Findings from The Women's Workplace Network Survey" and examples of successful women's networks (Dow Chemical, Bausch & Lomb, Kodak, and Kimberly- Clark). Of special value to the reader is a series of charts (eg Chart 4.2, "Support Continuum: Middle Management") and Checklists (one per each of the seven chapters) which, together, provide just about all anyone would need to design, implement, strengthen, and (yes) defend a successful women's network.

5 out of 5 stars This book tells you everything you need to know........1999-05-25

I wish I had this book last May (98') when we started our Women's Mentoring Network at work. The good thing is after we read it we realized we had done alot of the right things. If you haven't started your network yet or want to compare how you're doing with other companies this is the book you need to read.

Cisco Catalyst LAN Switching explains how Cisco's line of Catalyst network switches work in theory and in practice. Written by folks who teach Cisco engineers for a living, this book has the feel of a classroom lecture in which the instructor projects an image onto a screen and then proceeds to discuss it.

As such, this book demystifies important concepts and provides an introduction to practical experimentation. Switching and bridging are complex tasks that the authors ably explain, along with the differences among the components in the Catalyst line and strategies for fitting Catalyst switches into virtual local area networks (VLANs).

This book provides detailed configuration information on the Catalyst 5000 series. Ultimately it shuns Cisco Works for Switched Internetworks in favor of the raw command line in order to highlight the differences between the Catalyst operating system and standard Cisco Internetworking Operating System (IOS).

You'll find concise statements describing many administrative tasks, including the configuration of Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) and Token Ring networks. Here, the authors support their command and output listings with conceptual diagrams that show the effects of the command sequences. You can use this book as a training aid for the Cisco professional certification exams too--review questions appear at the end of each chapter. --David Wall

Topics covered: Switching and bridging concepts, contrasting bridging architectures, virtual private networks (VPNs), virtual local area networks (VLANs), and details of configuring the Cisco Catalyst 5000 series of products.

3 out of 5 stars not bad .......2005-08-13

As a relative beginner, I find it a little verbose, I'd prefer more of a how-to book. But this book gives a good overview of several switches, and there is a lot of useful information. A good book to have on your shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!.......2002-07-20

This book is great for beginners and expert alike (up to Catlayst 5500 series).

The author explains everything about using Cisco Catalyst Switches and give valuable examples as well which is a must.

Just a reminder for those taking CCNP Switching exam, this book is a text not a study guide. You can use this book together with a study guide for higher exam score result.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2001-01-07

This book is the best switching resource I own. I found it to be very readable, concise, and yet thorough. It's true that it suffers from many typos and it is getting rather dated, but most of this book is still extremely useful. (I very much hope that the authors are working on the 2nd edition.)

To expect this book to read like an exam cram is hardly fair. In the preface, the book itself claims to be intended as a reference for an intermediate level reader. Still, I used this book as my primary means of studying for the 640-504 exam, and easily passed.

1 out of 5 stars Need different text for new Switching exam.......2000-11-25

Although if you like manual type books, this is a fine book, it doesn't cut to the point and give you what is needs for the new CCNP Switching exam. Hard to read, with typos make it not a good choice.

4 out of 5 stars Good Writing, Older Technology.......2000-06-16

The book is very well organized and written. However, if you want to implement the newest generation of switched Ethernet based on gigabit Ethernet technology, you need to use several series of new Catalyst switches, which are not covered in the book. You will also find a few errors and typos in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Remove the words "Masterful Facilitator" from a page or two.......2000-03-17

Good book - I have gained a lot from this book but it is not an easy read. Take that beat-to-death-ugly phrase, "Masterful Facilitator", out of a few pages, please. Sounds like we're reading about the "Terminator". Good lessons we can all learn concerning change in the workplace - good reality check when dealing with inevitable changes.

5 out of 5 stars concise, easy to follow, powerful tool for managers.......1999-08-10

This book is a must read for human resource people on up the CEO's. It is easy to follow and has many concrete examples to how to affect self discipline and followship. It is a more simplified book than the "Fifth Discilpine Fieldguide" by Senge but has the same impact.
