1 out of 5 stars same old stuff.......2007-09-27

No new information. The man has written 7 books on the same subject. I learned nothing my 20 years of actual sales experience did not already teach me. I was hoping for more than suggestions on how to "out fox" prospects. Nothing really useful here.

5 out of 5 stars A Definate "Must Have" Book.......2007-09-18

If you don't have this book on your shelf, get it!

The Sales Bible is definitely one of the most comprehensive books written for sales people. It is a fun read and Gitomer uses different fonts and bolding to give you a feel of the author's sense of humor and style of "ranting".

This book covers it all; cold calling, networking, the sales process, handling objections, questioning, trade show strategies, 30 second commercial development to name only a few key elements, skills and processes of selling. This only skims the surface. The lay out is simple and the table of contents is detailed for easy reference.

This book is full of proven sales strategies, tactics and techniques that work. Even though this book is a few years old, it still comes out on top as The Ultimate Sales Resource today.

If you are looking for a resource book that contains many sales secrets - this is the book to buy. It will make it to your "favorite's" section in your personal library.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for sales and marketing.......2007-09-16

This book has been very helpful in my venture into marketing our new product. The content is really geared toward sales people. Jeffrey Gitomer is a well-seasoned sales person and offers great advice and personal experience in his trek down the road of sales. His book deals with cold calls, followup, what to do and what not to do, and how to approach sales from a more friendly and uninhibiting direction, among much else. GREAT RESOURCE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book - Inspirational Author.......2007-07-22

I love this book, it is a must have for all sales professionals. I can't believe Jeffrey isn't already 5x as popular as he is. His articles should be in every business publication in America. I am looking forward to meeting him this September when he is in Boston.

5 out of 5 stars Only book I could find covering Project Sever (EPM).......2007-06-04

Over the years Marmel has always delivered a solid product on Microsoft Project. As far as I know, it is the only book on the market right now that has anything related to Project Server. Pretty amazing when you figure Project Server has been out for about 5 months. I see the QUE book on MS Project just came out, and I could be wrong but I didn't see any mention of Project Server in the table of contents. Seems everyone either missed the boat or is pretty late to market on this topic. As I see it, MS Project hasn't changed that much in 10 years so buying a book that doesn't address the enterprise doesn't make a lot of sense unless you are new to Microsoft Project. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Detailed and thorough.......2007-05-31

I bought this book mainly for new features in 2007 MS Project. The book is very detailed and serves well for experts and beginners alike. I am quite happy with my purchase. I still have to explore the software provided on the attached CD. One thing it did not come with is 2007 MS project trial software.

Last thought: I wish these came like audio books with flash presentation. They can be in the $200 price range

5 out of 5 stars Project 2007 overview.......2007-05-19

A valuable resource for novice and advanced users. Sufficiently organized to allow one to navigate directly to a specific topic and glean concise information. Screen shots and detailed explanation are also helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Just a Feature Overview.......2007-05-05

Not a very useful book - wether for beginners rather than for professionals worked with former versions. If I want to have a feature List I will go to the Microsoft Homepage.
If you want to now something like "how to..." you have to try it for yourself - in this book you will not find any description. Wasted money!!!

5 out of 5 stars Truly the ultimate Project reference!.......2007-02-24

I've used Project for years, but decided it was time to take my Project expertise to the next level. This book covers it all. It would be helpful as a complete reference to somebody newer to Project, but also for those of us who have been using Project in previous versions, this book helps you get up to speed on new features, and delve into some powerful advanced features. The coverage of Project Server alone is worth the cover price. Great book!

2 out of 5 stars CD Doesn't Match the Book.......2007-07-05

The CD has one example distributed over many chapters. However, there are other examples the book claims to be on the CD that just aren't there. The book needs a web site with up-to-date examples.

4 out of 5 stars Office 2007 Bible: For experienced Users Only!.......2007-05-29

I am an experienced Access user; however, the new Office 2007 took a little time to learn. If you are a beginner trying to learn the 2007 version, I suggest you purchase a more step-by-step book. With my experience, I found it beneficial after I learned the new 2007 ribbon.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly accurate but sloppy.......2007-05-28

The authors clearly understand Access but I suspect they rushed the book to print, given the number of typos, outdated facts, and instances where information is repeated in a disorganized way. Probably fine as a reference for experienced users but not recommended for someone trying to learn.

5 out of 5 stars From Beginner to Advanced.......2007-03-08

Easy to follow in depth how to create professional MS Access programs

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2007-02-28

This is an excellent reference that really accelerated rated my learning of Access 2007. The authors do a very good job explaining general database management techniques and explaining every nook and cranny of the new version of Access. I found lots of useful tips and tricks that I was able to implement immediately.

Beginners will probably find the terminology a bit overwhelming, so for true novices who haven't had any exposure to Access, I'd recommend an entry level book like Access 2007 for Dummies before trying to tackle this book.

Those with some Access experience will get the most benefit out of this book, as it covers the essential topics: Advance queries, UserForms, VBA, ADO, working with SQL servers, and integrating with other office applications.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best book available for the strict DBA.......2007-09-07

There are really three kinds of database professionals:

-Administrators
-Architects/Designers
-Developers

Now, some people play all three roles or two of the three roles. This book is definitely not the best book for people who are strictly developers as is reflected by some of the reviews at this site. Of course, the book is not intended for that class of database professional (in fact, they are really not database professionals if they are strictly developers, but are more developers who have to have a database for their application).

For those who play the role of the Administrator only - and there are thousands of you out there because I teach many of you in my classes - or a combination of administrator/designer this is the best single book you will find. (That's right, the author of another book on SQL Server is suggesting that his book is not the best single book... my book helps you specifically in preparing for the 70-431 exam and is not intended to have the breadth of coverage of this book.) Some developers just don't realize that most small businesses with an IT staff of less than twenty do not have dedicated database people and this book is for those people in those businesses. They are not going to write a lot of applications, if any, from the ground up, but they must support SQL Server databases that have been developed by others.

They need to understand backups and restorations, data export, data import, data tranformation (ETL), security, performance issues and other administrative tasks. All if this is covered sufficiently in the SQL Server 2005 Bible.

I must say that I have not always been a fan of the "Bible" series, but this book has been great since the SQL Server 2000 level when I started recommending it.

I hope this helps you make your decision.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book.......2007-08-31

I guess I didn't buy this book from the perspective of a programmer, but rather a strict DBA. That is, I don't do much programming... I only manage the database server and help programmers when they need something done on the server. For this reason, I don't have some of the complaints of those who were concerned about lacking information from a developer's perspective.

As a DBA, I feel this is one of the best two books written on SQL Server 2005. I also used Tom Carpenter's 70-431 study guide to prepare for that exam and, while it's not as lengthy as this book, it is my other in that pool of two.

Certainly, if I could only get one book, it would be this one. There are things in Tom Carpenter's book that are not in this book, but since Mr. Carpenter's book is intended to prepare for an exam, there are also things in Mr. Nielsen's book that are not in the other. Overall, there is more detailed information and lengthy explanations in teh SQL Server 2005 Bible. It and Mr. Carpenter's book sit on my shelf alone in the SQL Server 2005 category. I highly recommend the SQL Server 2005 Bible and hope you wear yours out like I am beginning to do with mine.

5 out of 5 stars Good Reference For SQL 2005 DBA's.......2007-02-13

Just finished reading the book , I do recommend it , either for professionals or beginners ! , for professionals , it does have any in depth knowledge we can gain from , all topics are not very basic and shallow, describing distributed transactions in 2 pages for example, very good indexing and performance chapter 50, For beginners there are no books compare in value , the book is written for SQL Server 2005. it is a SQL Server 2005 bible.. that it's true...

5 out of 5 stars New features; new chapters.......2007-01-20

I have the author's SQL Server 2000 book and this book, and it is definitely a major upgrade: 350 more pages, 23 more chapters.

OBXKites is still in here, and David still gets his drivers license on 11/30/2005, but there are as many new topics as there are new features in 2005.
I can imagine that a bible series book is responsible for taking the reader from their "genesis" of being a novice to their "revelation" of advanced topics.

This can be a daunting task for one volume, especially when the subject is as vast as SQL Server! To accomplish this, the book has 10 chapters dedicated to variations of the Select Command. [...]

Nielsen's chapter introductions give you the feel that you're sitting down with a real person, so you know he's going to explain things instead of listing the syntax.

And experienced insight is what I crave when learning a new language. For instance, instead of slogging through all the features of cursors and finding out for myself that they're inefficient, Nielsen explains that while MSDN says "[SQL Server] implements a performance optimization called a fast forward-only cursor", the reality is that SQL Server is a set-based language and cursors should be used as a last-resort. He then shows how to convert a complex cursor to set-based code.

The chapter on indexing explains how indexes work and offers sound advice on how to plan effective indexes - probably the most effective way to optimize an application before having to start changing table structures.

Business Intelligence is the latest requirement for potential employers, so any book that has a chapter on how to use the BI Suite in 2005 is a must-read. There are 3 chapters on Analysis services (including Data Mining and MDX), 2 on RS, 1 on IS, and even one on BI using Excel.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent universal SQL 2005 Reference.......2007-01-09

This book is an excellent SQL Server 2005 Reference. There are millions of Code snippets to be used immediatly. The author refers mainly to AdventureWorks, the sample included at SQL 2005. The style of writing is not too serious and the author takes time to introduce - when needed - some database fundamentals. I personally think that this book is ideal for those who don't need a step-by-step book, but an complete reference with not too specialized topics. Of course - if you are specialized in a specific area, there are obvious books around covers topics much more deeper. But 99.5% of everything you find in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Mistake.......2007-05-30

I made the grave mistake of buying this book. I wanted a book that would show me how to use Joomla. It's something else entirely, and it's about the size of the Yellow Pages. Not for n00bs.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!.......2007-01-18

If you have any need to know about content management, document management or information management,
buy this book! This book dissects and discusses the subject at various levels of detail, so any reader will be able to find the correct level of discussion for his or her needs. I am going to be working on a CMS system, so I
devoured this book. I believe I have a good feel for the problems and pitfalls I will run into on the project. And I know I will be referring to this book as the project progresses.

Thank you so much for writing this book! It's a life saver!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for all kinds of content management needs.......2007-01-10

I am working with a company to design and manage their new CMS system, and this book really got me off on the right foot. I was actually quite surprised how detailed, specific and up-to-date the book was.

Also, the author writes with the insight of someone who has worked for a long time in the industry. He'll make a little comment about how committees get things done, what management likes to see in a project proposal, how projects get stuck in the red tape, etc. and it would spark a memories of things that have actually happened to me. "Yes," I would think, "Committees DO have that problem!"

Chapter by chapter, the book walks you through the nuts and bolts of content management - what it is, why you need it, etc. It covers issues such as:

- If you're buying a pre-built CMS, what steps you should go through to ensure you're getting the right system.

- How to step through the many hurdles of management to get buy-in and to get the right product.

- If you're building your own CMS, how you should build the product plan, which features you should look at, what kind of staff you should have, etc.

- There is also a great chapter on why you should format your data with XML (which I was very happy to find as I am a big believer in XML).

- He also discusses choosing hardware, implementing the system, etc.

- And, lastly, he goes through different data types and specific features that you need or should know about (such as author permissions and metadata).

I was extremely happy with this book and definitely recommend it to anyone charged with planning or implementing a CMS.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, helpful, written well, a must for your collection on CMS.......2006-03-22

This book is a required textbook for my online graduate publishing course at Pace University. I have enjoyed the book and the wealth of information it provides. It is informative and written well for anyone to understand. The examples and diagrams are terrific as well as the snippets from people in the business industry using CMS. At the end of my course in May 2006, this book will definitely be on my bookshelf and used on the job. I highly recommond this book for anyone.

4 out of 5 stars It's a worthwhile purchase.......2006-03-19

Good book. It's clear, very well organized and planned book. It's a complete guide and knowledge repository for those who want to start understanding the Content Management paradigm and to the experienced ones who want to improve their skills as well.

3 out of 5 stars Good Info.......2007-08-31

This book is full of good information, but it is not for a mom & pop start-up.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2007-04-30

A very thorough overview of what you need to know to start and run a small business. I see other posters suggest that the program is overly general. Not my impression at all. Nine CDs here and no filler.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful and a must-have for business owners.......2007-04-26

I found this book to be well written and informative. The author is specific about everything he discusses. He goes into detail in each chapter. There isn't too much he leaves out. Well worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Liked it a lot.......2006-07-31

Very helpful and comprehensive. Lots of info. Some for beginners and plenty for old hats like me. I use it often.

2 out of 5 stars Should be Called Small Business for DUMMIES.......2006-07-07

This might make a good book for your teenage kid trying to learn about small business but other than that I dont think it would be helpful. If you really want the details of how to create and grow a real business (especialy high tech) and get funded, you should read "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" (Stathis). It makes this book looks like preschool.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners.......2006-04-13

I'm surprised at the rave reviews that everyone is giving this book. I have this book and I've been reading through it and it starts off fine as it has you build a simple application in the beginning. I found that promising because I've never used Lotus Notes before so I thought this would be an excellent book. The only problem is that once you're finished with that chapter, it goes from good to really bad. The book then becomes a reference manual for the different aspects of Lotus Notes. It provides no tutorials whatsoever as one astute reviewer on here points out. If I wanted this kind of reference I could have read the help documentation for Lotus Notes. This book is only useful for people who have mastered many aspects of Lotus Notes and even then its explanations of aspects like commands are dry and not put into context.

5 out of 5 stars Must Own Book for All Domino Developers.......2005-10-18

Before I go any further, I have to disclose up front that I personally and professionally know all three authors who contributed to Lotus Notes and Domino 6 Programming Bible (Brian Benz and Rocky Oliver, 2003, John Wiley And Sons, 1032 Pages, ISBN 0764526111). And Rocky, Brian and Richard will all tell you that I would still be the first one to call it like I see it, regardless of relationships. So with that in mind, to every person who works with Lotus Notes and Domino, regardless of version, and to every person who has ever posted to the Lotus developerWorks forum asking about good reference material for development: buy this book and put it on your bookshelf. I may approach coding somewhat differently than the authors, but that is the nature of all application developers. But this book does something often overlooked in too many technical books: it not only talks about how things work in Notes/Domino, it also puts out best practices and explanations for these best practices based on the authors vast depth and breadth of experience.

Make no mistake about it, this book is a tome. You are not going to read it like a novel. You are going to pick and choose the pieces you need based on your experience levels and problems you are trying to solve. The publisher wisely categorizes this book as a "beginner to advanced" level, a point I think one early reviewer of this book missed. In a systematic format, the authors walk the reader from the very beginning of Lotus Notes as a product to the point where even the most advanced developers can benefit from the content.

Lotus Notes and Domino is all about design items and objects, stored as 'notes'. So the authors make no assumption of the reader's experience level. They start at the very beginning by laying the framework for a simple application. They then explain the notes storage model, which is often a hard concept for may people to grasp, especially outside auditors and non-Notes people. As a reader you are then given a detailed thorough explanation of the Notes//Domino integrated development environment, and then even more detail on each design element that makes up an application. For the advanced readers, there is detail coverage of data integration with Lotus Enterprise Integrator (LEI), Java and XML.

As I said earlier in this review, this book will be of value regardless of what version of Notes/Domino you are running because of the coverage of the underlying concepts surrounding development on this platform. Sure it will not help you with the introduction of DB2 as an optional back-end data store, but that is not fundamental to the platform (yet).

There is one, to me, glaring weakness in the book and I discussed this with Rocky. The book is huge and is packed full of great content. But the layout of the book by the publisher makes it hard for tips, notes, and new feature highlights to really jump out of the page and grab you. This is not the fault of the author's, but is something the publisher should look at down the road.

A Tip for Readers of this Book

This is a book that will get used a lot and as such, will fall out of the binding because of its size. The first thing I like to do with a book like this is beat the binding to the punch. I will remove the pages from the binding and put them in a three ring binder or binders. This will make it much easier to handle and give it a much longer shelf life.

Who Should Own and Read This Book?

This book should be on the desk of every Lotus Notes and Domino developer that cares about their work. It should also be in the possession of every internal and/or external auditor charged with auditing Lotus Notes and Domino applications, so that they understand what they are auditing.

The Scorecard

Double Eagle on a long par 5 playing into the wind.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book - A must have for Lotus Notes and Domino developers.......2005-09-02

By far and away the best (and almost the only) book around for Lotus Notes and Domino 6 application development. A lot of technical books (especially for Lotus Notes) seem to re-hash the same old stuff, often glossing over or completely ignoring complex topics. However this book has it all and it an absolute must for Lotus Notes and Domino developers.

2 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners.......2004-08-13

As with any book, it's only useful if it has what you want. Like many of the Bible series, it is rated for "Beginning", but it is really for experienced techs to add Lotus Notes to their skill set. The book assumes that you are familiar with scripting languages. If you aren't, don't expect this book to help you much. There are no reference materials for any of the functions or commands, no syntax helps, and no tutorials for the programming at all. Yet most of the chapters rely on programming extensively.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the price.......2007-09-24

Extremely long book, but requires an in-depth knowledge of the software. Definitely not for beginners nor intermediate users. Not practical nor real world.

3 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2007-08-24

This book is good as reference material. If you are looking to teach yourself Access or acquire a better understanding of how access works, good luck. I found myself more confused after reading many of the chapters then I did prior to starting.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2007-06-28

I have to say that this book is a good helped for somebody that doesn't know much about Access. I bought the book to help create a database and overall I'm glad I did. The only think I didn't like is the way the book was organized. I find it quite chaotic and lots of things repeat themselves in different parts of the book. Apart from trying to find what I was looking for, the information in the book is priceless for a general public user.

5 out of 5 stars Access Bible very useful.......2007-05-14

I bought this book rather than going to a $150 one day course on Access, and it has been very helpful.
Amazon shipped very quickly and the book was in new condition as advertised.

4 out of 5 stars MS Access .......2007-05-09

I've had the book for a couple weeks and have been able to get a decent looking database together with it's help. Especially useful is following the examples with the included CD.

5 out of 5 stars The required reference manual.......2007-09-12

.

This is the book I reach for when I need an elegant solution to a SQL problem, and one just doesn't come to mind.

Great Reference material for any and all SQL versions.

4 out of 5 stars Technical but the CD ROM is a great supplement.......2007-09-08

It took me about 3 weeks to fully comprehend the key points in this book and I have to say that this bible is a whole lot better than the standard Holy Bible. It is more logical and covers a topic that we can actually use for a long time. The CD ROM helped me gain a better better understanding of the key concepts. Only problem is that the author is too technical in his language.

1 out of 5 stars Not good at all.......2007-05-11

I find this book dificult to follow as it's poorly organized. It's also hard to find the information you need. I already know some SQL but need to learn more but this book is no help at all. For example, how exactly can I do different kinds of joins and how do I use functions? This book doesn't explain advanced techniques at al.

2 out of 5 stars Gives you branches, not even trees, let alone the forest.......2006-08-22

This book is very poorly written. It has a lot of technical details on three flavors of SQL implementation as well the SQL99 standard, but is totally light on general concepts. It tells you how to do something (but often in a convoluted way), but doesn't say why or for what purpose. There's also a lot of circular references which can drive the reader nuts. I do not like this book at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great all-around book.......2006-07-11

If you want to *really* know SQL, this is the book. I've used this often when I had a really tricky data request.

You might have to change the syntax slightly when working with different products, but the basics are all there.

The trial software probably has expired, but with MySQL and SQL Server Express 2005 (two I use) being free, you can get much newer versions than the software had anyway.

Other books from two and three years ago are on the shelf or were sold on Ebay. This one stays on the desk.

Book Description

An indispensable volume that shows how to succeed in business by using the Bible and its lessons as a source of inspiration and guidance n 1990, David L. Steward founded his company, Worldwide Technology, Inc., on a shoestring budget and borrowed money, well aware of the high-risk nature of the venture he was undertaking. Despite the fact that he was a novice entrepreneur, he was certain he would succeed. Steward believed intensely that God wouldn't let him down. Doing Business by the Good Book shares the inspiring lessons culled straight from the Bible, that Steward used to build his privately held billion-dollar company into a global information technology enterprise.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Business tips straight from the Bible.......2007-05-30

This book's subtitle, 52 Lessons on Success Straight from the Bible, captures its appeal but also indicates why it might turn away nonreligious readers. David L. Steward's ethical lessons are admirable. He divides his advice into weekly units, making it easy to apply. (This also reflects the book's roots in a weekly church-based study group). However, though Steward sees his lessons as straightforward, many readers might find his logic a little challenging. For example, he draws the lesson of niche marketing from Matthew 6:24, "No man can serve two masters." This makes interesting sense at first. However, while his later expansion into a second niche may offer a good business example, is it Biblical? Not as much. The chapter on the blessings of living in America seems even less scriptural, but many sections of the book do make good use of Biblical values as business guideposts. Steward's felicitous examples from his own successes make it easy to understand his points. We recommend his warm, inspirational guidebook to spiritually inclined readers who are interested in using their beliefs to reinforce ethical business practices.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, enlightening book.......2007-02-10

I highly recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2007-01-16

This book is an excellent example of how servant leadership can really work in the business world. It is a relatively short read, but packed with applicable Christian principles as well as a recipe for implementation in the corporate realm.
