Very Soothing Voice and Music.......2007-06-11
I would have to disagree with Karen K who said the voice and music were irratating. I found the narrators' voice to be extremely soothing and the music to be beneficial and relaxing. In fact, for all the hypnosis tapes I've ever used, this is by far the most relaxing. I'm able to go into an extremely deep trance and always come out with the suggestion at the end (that's how I know I didn't just fall asleep). I only gave it 4 stars so far, but will update it in a couple of weeks when I see how well it works. I've been using it twice a day for two days, today is the third, and haven't seen any changes in my appetite or eating yet. It says to use it for 21 days. I don't know if that means you'll only see significant results after 21 days, or what, but I'll keep this review updated to let you know if I've lost any weight. If not, then at least I have had some incredibly relaxing sessions while I'm listening to the tape.
Day Five: I found when I went to the market I chose only healthy foods and stayed away from the junk food without even thinking about it. I checked the fat content on all food even if it said "light" or "low fat." When I saw chocolate and thought I'd like some it was immediately followed up with the thought that I didn't want to buy it. The hardest part is getting out of the store without the junk in the cart. At home, I've noticed I have not wanted to eat between meals.
Fantastic!.......2007-01-28
After having so much success with Trevor's cd "Your Power Within" I had to try "Relax Your Way to Thin." I've lost 17 pounds so far and it is fantastic! I've never wanted to say I'm on a "diet" and I didn't really want to change my eating habits. But, after listening to the cd, my whole attitude about food and healty eating habits started changing. It made me realize that I wasn't denying myself anything by eating healthier, I was actually giving myself more. The weight started coming off, I'm feeling great and I'm sleeping soundly. Awesome CD, I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to loose weight.
Didnt work.......2007-01-12
This didnt work for me. Maybe because everytime I turned it on I fell asleep. Good way to fall asleep if you are having trouble. Bad way to lose weight.
Very impressed!!.......2006-11-06
I had gone to a Hypnotherapist before to lose weight and did not have much luck. However, I decided to try Trevor's method...and it works!! My eating habits changed dramatically after only listening to the cd twice. It is the most relaxing experience I have ever had. This cd allows you to fall asleep, so I listen to it while I am going to bed. It says that even if you do fall asleep your sibconcious will receive the messages that Trevor sends, without a doubt, it does! I am really amazed by this cd! I am getting ready to order his cd's for exercise and to quit smoking.
Thank you Trevor!!!
Amazing Changes!.......2005-08-04
This is an amazing CD with incredible results! I have always had weight problems, tried all the fad diets and always gained the weight back. Trevor has a soothing, reassuring and relaxing voice that has helped me to really start losing the weight. I have never looked or felt better, and I'm keeping the pounds off. This program has truly changed my life and I owe it all to Trevor. Thank you!

A History of Apple Marketing and Management.......2007-09-07
I listened to the audio version of this book. I was disappointed by it. It is actually a decent overview of the history of Apple's management and marketing, but that's not what it claims to be. The book makes the claim to contain "12 management lessons" taken from Apple. These lessons are completely lost in the history. I expected analysis of what Apple did right and wrong and some application of that to a more general market. What I got was a history book with very little actual analysis in it. The lessons might be there, but you really have to dig them out yourself. Not a bad read but not a management book. If you're looking for management advice, look elsewhere.
Very well written - management lessons without MBA type vocabulary.......2007-08-12
The book seems to have been written after thorough research into Apple's history and its business style. The analysis is accurate and is well supported by events and anecdotes in Apple's history.
I liked the book for its simplicity and storytelling style. You dont need to have an MBA to understand it - simple lessons explained well with supporting evidence.
Briskly written, informative and entertaining.......2007-05-24
Apple's estimated share of the worldwide personal computer market is only 2%. Why is a company with such a tiny slice of a multibillion-dollar pie so prominent, influential and highly respected? Jeffrey L. Cruikshank's briskly written, informative and entertaining book examines the philosophy and management principles of one of the world's most innovative companies. In an industry known for cutthroat competition, Apple really has none - at least for now. The company, under visionary CEO Steve Jobs, has carved out a unique niche. The mercurial Jobs deserves the lion's share of the credit for bringing equilibrium, profitability and promise to the company since his triumphant return to Apple in 1997. Although Apple is probably inimitable, we recommend this book to managers who wish to learn how it navigated the heavy seas of business.
Incredible Book!.......2007-05-13
I was writing a public relations case study on Apple Computer (now just Apple, Inc.) for a senior-level mass communication class and this book was absolutely WONDERFUL to have because it really showed what Apple is known for and does well. It's also a great read for anyone else, from the person who doesn't know anything about the company to someone that has a business of their own. The lessons in this book are applicable to any business, and they are good lessons to learn. Apple is really a company that has always (to paraphrase their circa-1997 slogan) "thought different" and their products are prime examples. (As a side note: I got a perfect 200 points out of 200 points for my case study and presentation -- and this book certainly helped!)
What are the other readers writing?.......2007-03-11
This book illustrates for me why I think copyright is bad; you buy a pig in a poke.
There were no 12 lessons, just a lot of stories about apple and it's history. As I Swede, I have heard that writers in the US get paid by how many words/pages they write, and I must say that from reading this book I am deeply unsatisfied.
The twelve lessons became hundreds, since every chapter ended with a lot of good tips and ideas. Un-structured and gave me very little as a reader.
I am really sorry, but I just cant give anything above one star, as I love reading management literature. Sorry, but this book will only give you few lessons with allot of reading. Don't buy it - it's a waste of money and time.
Customer Reviews:
Blech!.......2007-09-12
Recipes were awful! There are much better vinegar books out there if you take a look. This one just isn't it.
Terrible/Nonexistant Research, People Will Buy Anything.......2006-06-15
Before spending a single PENNY on this book, take a look at even the SIMPLEST research done on this topic. I looked through a friends' copy, and laughed out loud. In about a minute I was able to explain VERY SIMPLY how this would be an ineffective diet aid.
Vinegar is 5% acetic acid, a VERY dilute and relatively weak acid. Your stomach produces a lot of hydrochloric acid ... an EXTREMELY strong acid (about ONE THOUSAND TIMES STRONGER than acetic acid). Now, whether this tiny amount of weak acid helps you break down carbohydrates faster or differently in your stomach (which all but one study says it does not), makes very little difference, because those carbohydrates are still going to pass into your small intestine and there be absorbed into your system.
The body operates in a very narrow range of pH (how acidic or basic you are). Attempting to make yourself more acidic to destroy bacteria is ridiculous. First, you'd have to drink A LOT of vinegar (the body has a natural buffer system to keep us from killing ourselves, so you'd have to overcome that), and then, of course, you'd be dead.
This book is designed to prey upon people desperate to lose weight, and looking for SOME sort of affordable solution to a very real problem. There may be something easier than exercize and reducing caloric intake, and there may be something cheaper than gastric bypass, but THIS is not it. Please don't give this shyster author your time and hard-earned money.
apple cider vinegar - weight loss.......2005-08-16
I bought apple cider vinegar 1 month ago and it seems that i have not lost a single pound. I thought it would eliminate my body fats but it doesnt.
Losing weight can be easy.......2004-01-04
I bought Klaus Oberbeil's book Lose Weight with Apple Vinegar 3 years ago. It took me 1 year but I managed to lose 75 pounds without feeling hungry or deprived at all. I went off it for a while now am back on it again to lose the other 35 pounds I'd like to lose. I have bought 25 more books and gave them to customers of mine in my beauty salon who wanted to lose weight. It made such a difference in my life that they wanted to try it too. I've been on every diet made and nothing worked and kept the weight off. This is a miracle. Thank you so much for introducing me to vinegar. Pat Hamilton
Highly Reasearched!.......2002-02-07
I was fortunate to recently acquire this book from a learned professor of nutrition who found it within his good graces to purchase this book on the eve of my 40th birthday. He presented the book with a sneer, " Pietro you're obese and you don't listen to me, so try reading this." I figured that Samuel must have found this book worthwhile, beacause he is not give to utter laudatory remarks about the many diet books avaiable. I have followed the instructors of Klaus Oberbeil and it has helped not only my general health, but also my relationship with Sam.
Book Description
Educating the "Right" Way provided a detailed and systematic critical analysis of the growing power of conservative movements in educational policy and practice.. Since its publication, the worrisome trends it analyzes have worsened and have come into the very center of education in countries throughout the world. In this revised edition, noted scholar Michael Apple reflects on how many of the new wave of conservative policies and reforms that have come to the forefront of education debates since the book was published--No Child Left Behind, the increase in homeschooling, and more recent debates on anti-evolutionism.
This thoroughly revised edition of Educating the "Right" Way will bring us up to date on what are now clearly lasting transformations in the movements, ideologies, assumptions, structures, and practices of education. The education envisioned by these emphases moves us in directions that are deeply worrisome for anyone committed to an education that is worthy of its name. By providing a detailed and even higher critical examination of what is currently happening and by pointing to ways in which it might be interrupted, this edition can assist us in challenging what is increasingly becoming a dangerous commonsense in education.
Book Description
As American schools undergo a dramatic shift to the right, Michael W. Apple, internationally acclaimed author and educator, uncovers the roots of this conservative swing and points the way to a more balanced approach.
Why have the needs of private business become top priorities in the public classroom? How did school vouchers move from the conservative fringe to the political mainstream? Why are scores on standardized tests falling, even as teachers are forced to cram more "facts" into their curricula?
Apple argues that the interests of some strange bedfellows -- neo-liberals, neo-conservatives, authoritarian populists, and the professional middle class -- have converged to threaten the egalitarian ideals on which American public education was built. He dissects how this coalition has pushed educational policies toward a combination of weak state practices (markets, school choice) and strong state practices (state-mandated curricula and testing).
A former classroom teacher himself, Apple offers concrete, common sense solutions that show what critical educators and parents can do to interrupt these trends and develop a more democratic educational system, suited to the needs of all American children.
Michael W. Apple is the Bascom Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has recently been awarded both a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Educational Research Association and a UCLA Medal for outstanding academic achievement in education.
* Apple is a world-renowned figure in educational and social policy. He is the editor of Routledge's very successful series Critical Social Thought
*Apple's book Ideology and Curriculum was internationally voted as one of the top twenty books on education in the 20th century -- his books are published in fifteen languages
* Not merely a critique of the right, but of the left as well -- addresses current, critical problems in our schools

Solutions from Apple.......2005-12-17
I found this book most helpful in the way that Apple outlines and discusses some of the inherent contradictions of the current Right-wing coalition. That said, one of the critiques I see here from other reviewers is the same one that came up in a class where we all read this book: Apple does not offer solutions. I think there could certainly be a discussion about the extent to which his solutions are viable or are clearly articulated, but nevertheless, he DOES offer solutions.
As I read the final chapters I made note of implicit and explicit solutions that Apple does suggest to fight NCLB and other education policies that favor the Right-wing agenda. I think some are better than others. Here they are as I see them:
1) "Repostioning" -a solution that suggests policy makers should see reforms from the eyes of those most oppressed(p. 197)
2) A strong recognition that schools and schooling are a political battlefield (p. 198, 199)
3) Placing race at the fore of all educational reform discussions. He seems to divide it into two approaches. On p. 204 he says we, as a nation, need to confront the white supremecist sins of our past (e.g.Genocide against Native Americans and enslavement of Africans) and then on p. 207 we need to confront white privlege and to make "whiteness strange".
4)Do a better job publicizing good research that supports progressive notions, theories, and experiences about what good teaching is(p. 202).
5) In keeping with #4 above, he says that progressive leaders in ed reform need to do a better job with publicity. For instance, progressive academics like Apple can go on radio talk shows, write op-ed pieces, letters to editors of newspapers, Blog more, etc)
6) Find ways to connect educational efforts to local communities
(p.219). Apple does not elaborate or give us any examples regarding this idea.
7) Give marginalized voices a real voice in deliberations about ed. policy(p. 219). This might be what he meansby "repositioning"
but since he does not elaborate or give examples its hard to tell for sure.
8) Provide some space in schools for religion. I thought this one was interesting and showed some courage and willingness to compromise with the Christian Right. Of course, he stressed much caution in getting into bed with evangelicals (p. 221)
9) Exploit the inherent tensions and contradictions between the
four groups that make up the Right Coalition. One way to do this, according to Apple, is for progressive groups to form their own tactical alliances with groups they might not otherwise share interests with (p. 223)
10)Don't allow the Right to dominate discourse or planning
of charter schools. Apple recongnizes that charter schools aren't going anywhere so progressives must be active in building charter schools or they will be left out/behind. (p.226)
product never arrived then i was told it was on backorder.......2005-07-05
well, i thought that the book was coming. when i did not arrive at the last possible date i emailed and was told it was on backorder. they did let me get a refund which was nice. i would use them again for that reason alone.
i was disappointed..........2005-01-30
This is an excellent book to read if you just don't get it why Christians keep trying to ban all of the books. His analysis of how the Christian evangelical movement coalesces with education reform in the United States is outstanding. Oftentimes, I think that some people who are writing on educatonal theory would really rather be writing political theory if they could hack it in the big leagues. With Apple, it's the opposite. He smokes, he's on fire!
I was disappointed, however, that no plan of attack was proposed. We, the readers, get the sense that the current wave of reform is eroding our schools, but no sense of how to block its path. On top of that, I am treated like a class traitor if, after all of that, I am not willing to sacrifice my own children on the altar for public schools.
Then Apple undoes himself with an attack on homeschoolers. First of all, he makes an argument that homeschooling is bad because there is not enough governmental oversight to ensure that students are being taught "right" knowledge, i.e. not Christian knowledge, and then he complains that homeschoolers in California receive state subsidies because they are organized into umbrella schools, and THEN he generalizes the experience of Californians to all homeschoolers. In most states, homeschoolers receive few, if any, state subsidies. He does not mention that Californians have no choice BUT to register as part of umbrella schools if they want to comply with state law. His argument about racist anti-muslim textbooks, is like, well, if that is what parents and churches want to teach their children, that is what they are going to teach them whether they homeschool or not. I say Apple "undoes" himself because after much of the book is spent discussing the fallacy of "right knowledge," and advocating for multiculturalism, he ends the book by basically saying that fundamentalist Christians are wrong and have no place in shaping children's understandings of the world.
Sorry, man. And I'm an atheist, so that's pretty bad coming from me.
A lot of facts, a sharp critique!.......2004-01-03
In the last two decades we have been witnessing a wave of "reform" in education. The discourse behind these reforms is one that says that there is only one correct way of educating: the "Right" way. Michael Apple's book is extremely important because it maps out the efforts of the conservative modernization movement in converting their ideology in common sense and thus making their ideology the legitimate one, the one that makes sense. With a sophisticated theoretical framework and a plethora of concrete examples, Apple shows how the conservative reforms are in fact a struggle to constitute a particular view into official knowledge and to make other views of society not plausible. This is a book that will interest everyone who is involved in the field of education or social sciences.
Too many complaints, very few alternatives.......2003-11-14
Michael Apple continues his neo-marxist propaganda in this book going to great lengths complaining but offering almost or no alternatives to the so-called conservative agenda he is set to destroy.
The book is utterly imbalanced in his treatment of standards, educational reform and even the "Christian agenda". Ultimately the reader who does not buy into Apple's manifesto will feel cheated and might ask for a refund on a book full on prescriptive finger pointing but short on alternatives. It seems that Apple is trying to make a call for action among education policymakers. However, an essay in any liberal publication could have sufficed.
I found this book to be a short-lived firecracker. It left me wishing for more in order to decide how much Apple knows what he is talking about when he seems to persuade readers to destroy the conservative agenda. Perhaps Dr. Apple might use some of the royalties from this book to hire a research asssistant who can supply him with more data on which to base his groundless attacks.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining but not necesarily useful.......2006-08-13
I like GK. He is a colorful character with great wit. Being a huge Apple fan I decide to get this book. I'm contemplating starting a small service biz and bought this book for useful tips but I got very little out of it. Maybe it was ground breaking when it came out.
The book is really targeted for people that work in large consumer based hardware/software products. The book was written prior to the internet so they way companies sell and promote biz as well as the tips are somewhat outdated. Examples: Apple uses distributors to sell. Well in the US and most developed markets that ins't really true anymore. Apple goes direct and in some cases through retailers that are also distributors. If you want to get into a company get someone internally to champion your resume. This is already well known. Also most companies referenced in the book no longer exist (Ex: Compuserve) or stopped supporting the macintosh platform long time ago. Also the last chapter on "dating" in a tech world while amusing felt like a filler to complete the book.
There are a few good nuggets on presentations, demos, and maximizing your investment in trade shows. This was interesting but very technology oriented. There are also some interesting perspectives on Apple history and characters which Apple followers would enjoy.
So If you have a small biz that isn't technology based or you are not a fan of Apple there isn't much here for you.
One thoughtful comment in this book is worth a fortune...........2006-02-28
Kawasaki mentions his experience in advancing money to others to pay in advance for their work. Read "The Macintosh Way" as young as you can. I'd be quite a few millions better off if I had read him sooner and taken his advice to heart. And it's not just the money....
AWESOME BOOK: PERFECT FOR MAC EVANGELISTS & APPLE LOVERS.......1999-08-24
Guy Kawasaki has written a great book on Apple and the Apple business method. Very funny. Extremely unique and marvelous, like Apple. Perfect for brushing up your Mac Evangelist skills! One of the best books I've ever read, and I'm not even done! Guy truly embodies the Macintosh Spirit. everything about the book, from the footnotes to the illustrations, is like the artistic perfection of Macintoshes! GUY KAWASAKI RULES!!!EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK AND BUY A MAC!!!!!!
Formula for over the top success against all odds.......1998-08-06
The teams I have been a part of that followed the basic attitude that Guy outlines here have accomplished amazing things against all odds. On other teams, the farther we got away from these ideas, the more mediocre the end results turned out. If you want to create an environment where world changing events will happen, you need to read this book.
Stickingly Simple Basics for a Successful Growing Business.......1997-08-07
Guy Kawasaki's "The Macintosh Way" empowers the very essence of understanding the principles of evangelism and doing the "right thing the right way" in business. This book and his other book " "Selling the Dream" should be required reading for startup companies. Values and principles in business are the key to success.
Guy's keen sense of humour and reference to examples of what did and didn't work for the Apple Computer Corporation, while he worked there in the early 80's, is a fascinating perspective. Here, you will see how an successful company like Apple grows from innovation to mediocrity. For Mac users, this is a praticularly fascinating insight but should be required reading for all CEO's and directors of growing companies. It is an insightful collection of practicle examples of what and what not to do in business.

Though worlds apart, city girl Mariel and Brick, a farmer's son from upstate New York, have a lot in common. They're both strong-willed, fiercely independent, and fervent Brooklyn Dodgers fans. Their divergent paths merge when Brick's family's orchard is destroyed by fire, and his parents send him to stay with Mariel and her adoptive mother in 1941 Brooklyn. Though excited by the chance to see his beloved baseball team play in person, Brick can think of little else but getting back to Windy Hill and saving what's left of the apple trees. Unexpected help comes in the form of Mariel, whose big heart cannot always overcome the weakness of her polio-stricken legs. Determined to help Brick and discover the identity of her birth mother, Mariel finds a way to get them both to Windy Hill--where Brick's trees and the hospital where Mariel was born await--one shaky step at a time. Author of the much lauded Lily's Crossing, Patricia Reilly Giff has written another lovely work of historical fiction that perfectly evokes a long-past time and place. Here, we can't help but smell Brick's apples and hear the cheers of hopeful Dodgers fans in Ebbets Field. A wonderful story of friendship and personal triumph for the preteen set. (Ages 9 to 12) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
It’s August 1941, and Brick and Mariel both love the Brooklyn Dodgers. Brick listens to their games on the radio in Windy Hill, in upstate New York, where his family has an apple orchard; Mariel, once a polio patient in the hospital in Windy Hill, lives in Brooklyn near the Dodgers’ home, Ebbets Field. She was adopted by Loretta, a nurse at the hospital, and has never known what happened to her own mother. Someday, somehow, she plans to return to Windy Hill and find out. When a fire destroys their orchard, Brick’s parents must leave the farm to find work. They send him to live in Brooklyn with their friend Loretta, even though Brick knows that their elderly neighbors need his help to pick what’s left of the apples. The only good thing about Brooklyn is seeing the Dodgers play–that, and his friendship with Mariel. Maybe, together, they’ll find a way to return to Windy Hill, save the harvest, and learn the truth about Mariel’s past.

All the Way Home .......2005-11-18
The book called All the Way Home by Patricia Reilly Giff is a very good book. It's about a boy named Brick. He and his family used to live in a small house on an apple orchard but when a fire destroys it his parents have to find work. And Brick has to go live with his parent's friend Loretta. Loretta lives in Brooklyn with her adopted daughter Muriel.
Muriel once had polio at a hospital in Windy Hill were Brick used to live. Loretta was a nurse at the hospital that Muriel went to and she adopted her because her mother never came back for her. So this story is about Muriel trying to find her mother and Brick trying to get back to Windy Hill to save the apple harvest.
I liked this book and I would recommend this book because it is very exciting. This book gets right to the point and you never want to put it down. I liked how it had two stories weaved together and how Brick and Muriel both had some kind of similarities with in each other. I thought the book All the Way Home was a very good book for all ages.

All the way Home By: Patricia Reilly Giff A Dell Yearling Book
Mariel and her mother were great friends. All the way Home took place in the 1940's. Mariel was diagnosed with polio disease, but at the time there were no treatments. Mariel was soon adopted by a nurse named Loretta from the hospital because her mother didn't want to see her daughter suffer with having polio and have to take care of her on her own. She thought it would be very difficult to deal with and it would be easier to have a nurse who knows all about polio take care of her. So she asked the nurse to adopt Mariel and take care of her until she is old enough to be by herself. Then there is Brick who is Mariel's best friend. He lives in a different part of New York than Mariel. He lives in an area away fom the city. Mariel used to live there until she got adopted and moved closer to the city. Brick is going through some family struggles also. Bricks family has an apple orchard to make money. Then on a stormy day a lightning bult struck the trees and set them all on fire. So together Mariel and Brick figure out their problems.
The two main characters are Mariel and Brick. Mariel as I said before was diagnosed with polio. The author did not give any descriptions of the characters that were very clear at all, at least not clear enough to make a picture of the characters in your head. I can picture her as being a small, petite girl who is very smart though. I can also picture Brick being a small, skinny, dark haired person. Then there is Brick. Brick is very out going just as Mariel is. Both of them are very brave also. Brick is dealing with family problems like trying to help his family make money to pay for their house and put the food on the table. Mariel and Brick aren't only best friends they are also huge Dodgers fans. In case you are not aware, the Dodgers are a baseball team. The two friends are hoping that the Dodgers will win the pennant in the year that the book takes place, but not many people believe that the Dodgers can do it.
This book had an okay plot to it but I really disliked the style of writing the author used. There would be two chapters on Mariel and then two chapters on Brick and so on. That really got me confused. I had to take little sticky notes and write what happened in each chapter on them because I would get so confused. It was really hard for me to concentrate on the story too because the author would go off subject so much and then say "so any ways..." all the time and that just about drove me insane. Some adjectives I would use to describe this book are boring, slow, irritating and very off topic. The genre of All the way Home is realistic fiction. The author is not very good at describing the different characters and her chapters are very confusing, but if you are interested in this book go right ahead and give it a try. Personally I think it would be a waste of time. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
Okay............2002-08-05
This book was alright, but it was kind of boring....I expected alot more after reading Lily's Crossing, which I really liked alot. It was one of those books that you count how many pages you have left till it's over.....
Intriguing, well crafted novel for young readers........2002-03-29
Brick and Mariel share their interest in the Dodgers team in 1941 where it seems they share little else in common. Mariel is determined to know her real mother, who left her in the hospital with polio, and Brick's parents must abandon their family farm when disaster strikes, sending him to live with nurse Loretta. The three form an unusual, different kind of family with renewed dreams for the future.
Just Can't Miss This Book.......2001-12-30
A young girl searches for truth of her beginings in life and discovers how precious she is. Even with polio a young nurse still wants to adopt her and raise her as her own. Her adoptive mother believes she can do anything, even with polio, so she wants her to go out there and make a difference. Truly not a story to be overlooked or past by. It you never read another book.... read this one.

Thank God It's not Angela's Ashes!.......2006-03-30
If I wanted to read another depressing Irish Childhood story, I'd have re-read Angela's Ashes! (Not to diaparage Angela's Ashes in any way.) I completely enjoyed the story of Liam's family, his upbringing and the hard work necessary to survive in Ireland in those times. I especially enjoyed Mother Darcy. Whether she actually knew Aloyisius Hitler or not isn't the point, it's all in the storytelling.
To compare Penny Apples to Angela's Ashes is the old "Apples to Oranges." (Sorry about the pun!) Appreciate the story on it's own merits.
Straight up No Nonsense Story.......2006-03-29
If you knew Liam personally, you'd have a bit more insight into the personality that wrote this book. He tells a great story, and I'm certain that most of its true :-)
I picked up a copy in Dublin last year at a book signing for his second book "Golden Apples." He even bought me a pint after the book signing. I know his family as well, and there are things in this book that give some intersting insight into the path behind them.
Its written in a straight up no fluff no nonsense kind of way, and thats the way Liam is.

Not Angela's Ashes, But Bits of Good Irish Storytelling.......2006-02-12
Somewhat stiffly written, the book offers insight into a closely knit Catholic family struggling against poverty in Ireland. The author's success in business is commendable and he gives credit here to those who helped him along the way.
At times, it seems a bit too self-congratulatory, but worthwhile reading for anyone with Irish roots.
His childhood memories are a bit more gripping than his adult years. I particularly enjoyed the story where he bought unsaleable plastic dolls and the family decorated them, making a good profit selling them on the street as Marilyn Monroe dolls.
Wonderfully uplifting biography and history of Dublin!.......2004-11-29
I picked up "A Long Way From Penny Apples" while traveling in Ireland in June, 2004, but didn't get a chance to read it until now. I started reading on Thanksgiving evening and couldn't put it down until I finished it today. The hardbound book spent 14 weeks on the UK bestseller Top Ten list, with 5 weeks at number two, so I don't understand the caustic reviews offered here on Amazon. Heavens, if the Brits, who usually distain anything coming out of Ireland, have overwhelmingly found this book to be excellent then surely this outstanding book merits readership in the U.S. too.
Bill Cullen wrote the book as a tribute to his parents and grandmother, not as an ego booster for his own esteem. He was spurred on to write the book after reading Frank McCourt's words that there was, in effect, nothing more miserable than a poor Irish childhood. Cullen had a poor Irish childhood that he viewed as anything but miserable.
Mr. Cullen grew up in the poorest tenements of Dublin with 12 siblings. His family was certainly bereft of even the most basic needs for food and decent shelter, but flush with wise and spirited discipline from his loving parents and maternal grandmother. It was the positive, uplifting attitude of his family that drove Mr. Cullen's ambitions to become the very wealthy man he is today. He's written a true rags-to-riches story, giving most of the credit not to himself, but to the upbringing his family provided. All of the proceeds of the book will go to a youth charity in Ireland, and in fact Bill has promised $1 million to the charity whether or not the book raises that much money. Not exactly the actions of the type of person pictured in the previous reviews.
I certainly learned much from the depictions of a Dublin era long gone, but the optimistic tone of the book was most inspirational and left me with a smile on my face. My own grown children will receive copies of this book for Christmas this year, in memory of my Irish father and grandmother who would have bent their ear with the same wise teachings if they were still alive.
Forget this one.......2003-10-07
The profits from this book are going to charity. That is probably the best thing about this bloated, self-serving exercisein ego-enrichment. Mister Cullen is a remarkable man and he wants you to know that in a desperate way. He could have saved everyone a lot of trouble and just given the money directly to the charities. Mr Cullen tells the reader that he is not a professional writer. That wasn't needed.
