Book Description
"The articles are well-written and informative. . . . All the authors write with authority. . . . This is a sound and interesting . . . text that merits consideration as a library purchase, and has implications for researchers in the field of negotiation studies." --The Service Industries Journal "The essays . . . are of a consistently high standard. . . . The appendixes are well laid out with useful material for those engaged in teaching negotiatory skills, or developing programmes in this field. . . . The essays in this volume cover a wide range of topics. . . . The strength of the book, however, is that it provides a good blend of theory and practice in the art and science of negotiating in diverse settings. The book is well organized in a systematic manner, and deals in a logical way with the interaction processes in negotiating. . . . This book is highly recommended to practitioners who would find much by way of applicable theory developed from practice. It will be of interest to academics, and especially to those who use the case-study method of teaching in graduate courses." --Industrial Relations Journal "Negotiation is a valuable contribution for both negotiators and students of the process. Most of the authors are themselves both innovators in practice and scholars. The book is packed with so much wisdom . . . nuggets of insight and practical advice. Challenged with conveying such wisdom in a chapter, each author comes right to the point, usually in straightforward language, buttressed by vivid examples. It is a must read." --Richard E. Walton, Wallace Brett Donham Professor of Business Administration, Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University "Negotiation: Strategies for Mutual Gain is a rich store of creative ideas and valuable advice by leading experts in the field of negotiation and conflict resolution." --Jeswald W. Salacuse, Dean, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University "Lavinia Hall has managed to pack into a single volume much of this country's most provocative current work on the subject of what is known popularly as 'win-win' negotiations. The book should prove invaluable to those concerned with how we manage our differences--in the workplace, the courtroom, and at home. There is something in this volume for everyone." --Michael Lewis, President, ADR Associates, Washington, DC "Lavinia Hall has pulled together an excellent collection of readings. The articles represent important contributions by many of the leading thinkers in the fields of negotiation and dispute resolution. This is a very useful anthology." --Roy J. Lewicki, Professor of Management and Human Resources,

Not pimpin.......2007-07-30
I thought this book had to do with checking bread from square broads. This book is for cat's who need confidence. If you already got game and you can get square b******, then you don't need this book.
Establishing boundaries.......2007-02-06
Every book on this topic has at least one jewel of a nugget. The pieces that stuck out most in my own head is the premise that you as the guy, (contrary to societies preachings and brow beatings) are in fact a person.
You are allowed to have your own rules, your own boundaries. This books one contribution to my own pursuits on this topic is to communicate and enforce those rules and boundaries so a woman does not run ripshod all over you. We deserve the same level of courtesy and respect as women demand from us.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AS ONE OF THE MOST INTELLIGENT AND PRACTICAL BOOKS ON MEETING WOMEN..........2006-11-07
... and, believe me, I've read through a lot of garbage lately written by chumps-masquerading-as-casanovas who's "success" rate with women is highly suspect, judging by the outdated and/or ridiculous advice espoused in their books (I won't name names, but you can see my other reviews for more info)... this is the one to get by guys who obviously know what they're talking about based on real-life experience.
M.A.C.K. Tactics.......2006-06-19
It's a great dating book. Very useful tactics one can use to level the playfield with women. One technique that really stands out is the IOU (not to be confused with IOI's, hehe), which I believe is worth the price of the book. You can probably write another book based on that one technique alone because there's so many great applications for it.
But this book is NOT a pick-up book; It's a dating book. Most of these techniques are best used in a more intimate 1 on 1 situation with a women. These techniques are not going to make you get all enthused and go out to your local mall and start "macking it" to every hotty in site. (at least it didn't for me. Nonetheless it's a fun read and a great way to improve your dating life 2 fold.
The "other" take on dating.......2006-03-26
Many of the books written on dating today are from "gurus" like David D., Ross Jeffries, Mystery, Neil Strauss (not necessarily a guru but worked with the best). The authors of this book bring an entirely different persepctive to the dating world. They discuss many of the same techniques in a way that is far more palatable to the average male who does not see women as his only source of affirmation. Great book, good advice.

Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In
ASIN: 0674024141 |
Book Description
This masterly book substantially extends Howard Raiffa's earlier classic, The Art and Science of Negotiation. It does so by incorporating three additional supporting strands of inquiry: individual decision analysis, judgmental decision making, and game theory. Each strand is introduced and used in analyzing negotiations.
The book starts by considering how analytically minded parties can generate joint gains and distribute them equitably by negotiating with full, open, truthful exchanges. The book then examines models that disengage step by step from that ideal. It also shows how a neutral outsider (intervenor) can help all negotiators by providing joint, neutral analysis of their problem.
Although analytical in its approach--building from simple hypothetical examples--the book can be understood by those with only a high school background in mathematics. It therefore will have a broad relevance for both the theory and practice of negotiation analysis as it is applied to disputes that range from those between family members, business partners, and business competitors to those involving labor and management, environmentalists and developers, and nations.
Customer Reviews:
The reference in Negotiation........2007-05-05
This is a rich and complete book that touches all aspects of negotiation. The subtitle "The science and art of collaborative decision making" is might be even a better descriptor of the contents. The book has a certain scholar touch and is with 600 pages really comprehensive and more to be used as a reference than to be read in one sitting. For those that are more interested in a shorter book, "Co-opetition" might be a faster to read alternative that is quite in line with this book.
Professor Raiffa shows that negotiations and how to approach them depend mainly in how the structure of the negatiation is eg. integrative vs distributive. He proposes a very structured way to approach negotiations, being good prepared and looking for alternatives to an agreement before to have the freedom to forfeit the negotiation. Once meeting being creative working together with the other party helps to find those spots that are valued differently by the parties and offer possibility of common gains. Whether always the described Full Open Truthfull Exchange (FOTE) is possible might be doubted but it gives at least the yardstick how things could be. The author compares often diverse solutions and how the merit of each of them varies depending the criteria used, and what fairness in each case might be.
The book is divided in major themes that are gone through in detail, any of those can be read in an almost independent manner, without following the order in the book.
Part I. Fundamentals describes the basics of the books and what is the approach followed to structure negotiations. The Game Theory chapter is in itself an excellent summary on the theme and a nice introduction for those that never have been exposed earlier to the subject.
Part II. Two Party Distributive (Win-Lose) Negotiations. The type of negotiation we all think about as example is explained with plenty of details and examples, including a chapter on the particular case which are auctions.
Part III. Two Party Integrative (Win-Win) Negotiations. This is the second type of negotiation we think of. There are several exmaples of different problem types one can find, some as the repartition of goods has many practical applications for the majority of people in rela life situations and gives very practical insights.
Part IV. External Help. Describes what professional help can do for you in a negotiation, and what you ahould take into account before asking for help.
Part V. Many parties. Shows the complexity of negotiations of any type when a major number and how in that occasion agreements can be drafted.
In all chapters there are plenty of examples and information how people react in laboratory situations coming from the which gives the best approximation of real situations develop. Each chapter is closed with a summary of the core concepts which helps when one wants to review the book.
With the comprehensiveness of the book few things are missing or could have been mentioned additionally. The book has plenty of examples but I missed some exercises for the reader to prepare for the diverse points in each chapter. Two small misses that could be easily arranged are how to use decision trees to help finding alternatives and to mention some of the nice software packages that help to simulate random variables that affect decisions, eg Crystallball.
The Definitive Treatise on Negotiation Analysis.......2005-01-13
This is a wonderful book for serious practitioners and students of negotiation. It covers the negotiation waterfront so completely that this reader -- who is also a writer and negotiation prof -- is left wondering what more can be said on the subject. Unlike most pop negotiation books, this tome drills deep into qualitative and quantitative approaches to structuring and analyzing simple and complex negotiation situations. The quality of the writing is superb. The author's insights are profound, informed by years of experience in the field. The quantitative discussion can be a bit intimidating, especially to math-challenged readers. But even without the quantitiave material, it's well worth the price of admission.
Remarkable book for negotiators.......2003-01-22
This book has a real wow factor. I was amazed at how much ground it covers - game theory, pscyhology, decision analysis, negotiation stuff. There's a great balance of technical help with easy-to-read conversations between hypothetical negotiators making the tricky concepts easier to understand. You probably won't want to read it from cover-to-cover but every chapter has really useful insights on how to negotiate better with positive or negative counterparts.

Book Description
This edited collection offers a comprehensive examination of theory, research, and practice in crisis (hostage) negotiation from the perspectives of communication, law enforcement, psychology, sociology, and criminology. The volume identifies promising conceptual frameworks for the development of research on crisis negotiation. This book is also useful to crisis negotiation trainers and leaders in law enforcement who are searching for insight beyond anecdotal stories and who recognize the need for more rigorous application of behavioral science to the practice of crisis negotiation.

A Factual Account.......2005-08-18
After having been kidnapped and held hostage by early Al qeada operatives in 1992 just after the fall of Communism in Russia, I can relate to the negotiation tactics relayed in this book.
An intelligent, factual and fascinating read.

Dynamic Processes of Crisis Negotiayions.......2000-07-14
Recommended to me by Major Bob Beach, Director of the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy in Virginia. Great book if you're interested in this field, or are already in it and want to hone your skills. At only 17, I feel this book will be very helpful to me in a future I hope consists of a career as an Alaska State Trooper. It may be a little heavy, but dig in and hang on for the long haul. GOOD LUCK!

Negotiation Analysis: The Science and Art of Collaborative Decision Making
ASIN: 067404813X |
Book Description
Whether you are selling a house, closing a business deal, settling a divorce, arbitrating a labor dispute, or trying to hammer out no international treaty, Howard Raiffa's new book will measurably improve your negotiating skills.
Although it is a sophisticated self-help book--directed to the lawyer, labor arbitrator, business executive, college dean, diplomat--it is not cynical or Machiavellian: Raiffa emphasizes problems and situations where, with the kinds of skills he aims to develop, disputants can achieve results that are beneficial to all parties concerned. Indeed, he argues that the popular "zero-sum" way of thinking, according to which one side must lose if the other wins, often makes both sides worse off than they would be when bargaining for joint mutual gains.
Using a vast array of specific cases and clear, helpful diagrams, Raiffa not only elucidates the step-by-step processes of negotiation but also translates this deeper understanding into practical guidelines for negotiators and "intervenors." He examines the mechanics of negotiation in imaginative fashion, drawing on his extensive background in game theory and decision analysis, on his quarter-century of teaching nonspecialists in schools of business and public policy, on his personal experiences as director of an international institute dealing with East/West problems, and on the results of simulated negotiation exercises with hundreds of participants.
There are popular books on the art of winning and scholarly books on the science of negotiation, but this is the first book to bridge the two currents. Shrewd, accessible, and engagingly written, it shows how a little analysis sprinkled with a touch of art can work to the advantage of any negotiator.
Customer Reviews:
A good college text on negotiation.......2003-05-09
Howard Raiffa is a professor at Harvard Business School who has a background in game theory and competitive decision making skills. He is also affiliated with the Harvard Program on Negotiation [website]. I was first exposed to this text in a Harvard symposium on collaborative negotiation that I attended 10 years ago. Raiffa's book is a popular text for academics who are interested in negotiation skills.
In this book, Raiffa likes to distinguish between the "art" of negotiation and the "science" of negotiation. By "art of negotiation" Raiffa means dealing with the human element. By "science" Raiffa means those aspects of the negotiation process that are capable of being analyised in a fairly structured manner.
Raiffa devotes most of this book on the "science" of the subject and uses his background as a game theorist specializing in competitive decision making as the basis for a rather analytical approach to the subject. It helps, but is not necessary, if you have a background in mathematics. If you are not math literate, skip the math and focus on the conclusions and you will do fine. Like most game theorists, Raiffa is mainly interested in determining which outcomes to negotiation are optimal for both parties. Much of his analysis is based on the premise that both parties will act in an ultimately rational manner and make decisions that will be optimal for themselves. (Note to game theorists- most of Raiffa's analysis tends to focus on the various "equilibrium points" that parties have when they negotiate.)
Of course, reality is somewhat different. Real life does not lend itself easily to mathematical models. People usually act irrationally when they negotiate and it is difficult, if not impossible, to quantify human emotions with a formula.
Nevertheless, this book is useful for people who want an analytical approach--as opposed to strategic and tactical approach-- to the subject of negotiation. The subtitle of the text ("How to resolve conflicts and get the best out of bargaining") is a little misleading. There is not much "how to" covered in this text. Rather the emphasis is on theory and analysis.
Too much science, too little arts.......2002-04-03
Too many charts, and science stuff.
A substantive book on negotiation.......2001-02-14
This book is the best book on the subject, but it is not for wimps. If you want something with the shallowness of "Who Moved My Cheese?" this book is not for you. Most college programs on negotiation use Raiffa's texts and this is the best of the lot.
Highbrow Negotiation Techniques.......2000-05-08
Although I admire Howard Raiffa's book Smart Choices, this book doesn't appeal me at all. I felt his approach to negotiation too theoretical and extremely difficult to apply to real life issues. As one of the other reviewers states correctly, the book is rather for students of negotiation. I do much more prefer Getting to Yes, which sets an easy framework for approaching negoatiation.
A must read for serious students or practitioners.......1999-09-25
Howard Raiffa is one of the few authors of negotiation related books who combines expertise in both theory and practice of negotiations. While a bit heavy-reading for the beginner, any serious student or practitioner in the art of negotiation will find this book both thought provoking and extremely useful. I highly recommend it (I give the book as a gift to many colleagues).

Book Description
This book by Roger W. Shuy, the senior figure in forensic linguistics, is the first to explain in an accessible way the vital role that linguistic evidence and its proper analysis play in criminal investigations. Shuy provides compelling case studies of how language functions in investigations involving, among others, wired undercover operatives, and the interrogation of suspects. He makes the point that language evidence can be as important as physical evidence, but yet does not enjoy the same degree of scrutiny by investigators, attorneys, and the courts. Beyond this, however, his more controversial thesis is that police frequently misuse or manipulate language, using various powerful controversial strategies, in order to intentionally create an impression of the targets' guilt or even to get them to confess. This book makes its case by analyzing a dozen criminal cases involving a variety of crimes, such as fraud, bribery, stolen property, murder, and others. About half involve co-operating witnesses who do the tape recording, and the other half undercover police officers. These cases demonstrate how undercover operatives use different conversational strategies, such as overlapping conversation, ambiguity, interruption, refusing to take "no" for an answer, and others to create a negative impression of the targets on later listeners. Creating Language Crimes provides a fascinating window into a little-known and discussed facet of law enforcement. It will appeal to anyone concerned with language (particularly sociolinguists and discourse analysts), as well as to those involved in law enforcement and criminal cases.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource.......2003-06-24
An excellent book, well written and meticulously researched. Not only does Nadine George-Graves provide fascinating and useful information about the Whitman Sisters, she also discusses, in great detail, the social and cultural circumstances surrounding their historical moment. The information on Toby, the black vaudeville circuit, is invaluable. Much of what George-Graves writes about hasn't been written about elsewhere, making her book all the more unique and important.
This is a short book - only 118 pages - but the amount of information it contains makes it indispensible for anyone interested in vaudeville, dance, or African-American theater.
Important Black Women's History Unearthed.......2000-12-28
Like Alice Walker, who resurrected the work of Zora Neale Hurston, Nadine George-Graves has unearthed the lost story of powerful African-American women: The Whitman Sisters. Profoundly talented entertainers, these women were also astute entrepeneurs, whose company formed the springboard for many musical and stage luminaries. We are in Ms. George-Graves debt for bringing this lost history to light.
Important Black Women's History Unearthed.......2000-12-28
Like Alice Walker, who resurrected the work of Zora Neale Hurston, Nadine George-Graves has uncovered the lost story of powerful African-American women: the Whitman Sisters. A powerful force in Vaudeville, these profoundly talented entertainers were also astute entrepeneurs, whose company formed a springboard for many luminaries of the stage. We are in Ms. George-Graves debt for bringing to light this important history.
