A well written and easy to understand in layman's term explanation of a serious stroke. While not everyone will have such a dramatic recovery from stroke, the narrative gives hope and "insight" into the recovery process.

Her resilience, her deep understanding of the condition and lessons to be learned by her and other health care professionals is outstanding. A must read for anyone whether faced with a health problem or not. Is a mind awakening experience!!!

outdated theories and notions.......2006-06-20
As a health care provider I am constantly searching for information to share with my patients. I often suggest specific books they might read, in order to enlighten them on subjects they are currently dealing with in thier lifes. This particular subject is near and dear to my heart as I am also the WOW (we are nearing our 6th anniversary). It is my opinion that we need more written on this subject....there are way to many women searching for answers and not finding them. Unfortunetly, they will not find them in this book. I believe this book to be outdated in many of it's notions and "solutions" ( if not in all of them!). This particular subject I believe, is currently moving in a new direction...the opposite direction in fact, that Julie Donner Andersen is traveling. For way to many years WOW's and GOW's were told that they had a certain "place" and a certain" attitude" they had to uphold. Todays woman does not take lightly, to being told how to think and feel.
This book in many ways pushes the new woman in a widowers life back in time. To a time where she was "second". To a time when a woman was silent. This book would have a new WOW or GOW doing "grave visits" with the new man in her life. By the time you are done reading, you find yourself asking....who is more in love with the LW...the widower or the new wife??
The book has a sweet, yet antique notion of three hearts involved in the relationship when indeed that is not possible. It is two hearts and one past relationship, with lingering bittersweet memories for only ONE of the other two hearts.
The whole idea behind being involved with a widower is to love him...move forward into the future, and hope that one day soon the LW is a non-issue in the relationship. By the end of this book you realize if you follow the suggestions....the LW will exist forever. I believe Juilie Donner Andersen had good intentions, but then again, I also love the scenes in a Norman Rockwell painting, and the scenes depicted are alas also scenes from the past. It is a new world, new times and women are changing.

While I do appreciate this book being available I really wish there was something else more realistically written. I found the book in the midst of a second wife emergency. I read it half way through and was totally depressed and felt like I would always be the sad replacement, not the one he wanted and that I would just have to accept that. A week later when I could finish the book I found the tiny ray of sunshine in the final chapters. So, if you get this book be sure to read the whole thing before you get too bummed out. The book did validate some of my fears but also perpetuates the Hollywood, romantic movie myth that your former widower will always be looking back to someone else and will never be able to love you completely or be completely happy in the future. The myth that your entire role is to "stand by your man" while he unknowingly hurts you with his words and actions and you should for the most part take it.
It's my personal opinion that you need to take the crumbs of truth for your situation from this book and ignore the rest.
If I was not already married when I read it I may have given up on a wonderful man due to the extra fears this book created that I had not considered and the depressing way the first few chapters were written.

Loved the book. It was great to just have all the things I have been feeling by being with a widower to be validated. Had no idea the emotional rollercoaster that exists with being with a widower and its great to see that everyone experiences a lot of the same feelings. Thank you so much.

Contains advice worth a thousand times the price of the book........2005-09-16
Insights for the Journey is an excellent primer of common sense measures every executive should use in working with their peers, superiors, and subordinates, but usually do not. Some may scoff at the seemingly simple axioms and parables written by Lucht; this is akin to describing Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea as a story about a senior citizen engaged in fishing. Managers, at any level, who do not heed Lucht's words will quickly reach the level of their own incompetence.

I so wanted to like this book, it being by John Lucht, whose "Rites of Passage..." is the ONLY book I recommend for job changing executives - it is one of my top 100 business books of all time. Nevertheless, there are only a couple of good ideas in here. I agree that the first one, "Fit in", is huge and so often neglected, and I too often have to tell my clients to take vacations. But the rest seemed awfully simplistic, and I would have liked more details on how.

Good morning, John, and I must say that this first insight hit me like a ton of bricks! For most of my career, I have been identified as a high potential person, the ideal change agent, the first one to take a development assignment, the first one to start a new division, etc. While that very often has brought me success, tho at a high cost and high risk, when I have taken a fall, it was for exactly the reason you cited, and by that point, curiously lacking in the support of the very senior fellow who had spent months coaching me to stir the pot. In fact in those unsuccessful cases, the senior guy was asking me to do the things he had been unsuccessful in doing or had simply been afraid to do.
I so appreciate your insight as I continue to pursue my current job search targets.

Insights for the Journey is a book that you won't want to put down. I am amazed at how much wisdom Lucht packs into this succinct and very readable book. If you are serious about prospering in your career, you would be foolish to not equip yourself with the core essentials presented here. All of the boring fluff is removed and 47 compelling insights remain. During the holidays, I gave Insights to several colleagues and to all of my subordinates. I've already seen it's impact. I honestly credit the book with the tremendous improvement in productivity and relationships that has permeated my company's culture. Thank you, Lucht!!

Overall, I found the book fascinating. I could not put it down. It is small, and I finished quickly, but then I went back to read it again. So many of these lessons are easily missed in the day to day activity of our lives.
I just don't know how John takes the maelstrom of human activities and pulls out, succinctly and clearly, the most poignant lessons. In this book John has done it for life's lessons beyond just the recruiting aspect (which was the previous book he wrote, focusing in on the most important aspects of managing recruiters!).
Bravo. Bravo. Bravo. This is a must read.

Short, intense method for holy living........1998-09-30
This short book (80 pages) by Swindoll is one of the most practical books I have ever read. It will be difficult to practice, but if you want to establish a meaningful, full, devotional life, this may be the best thing you can get. It is profound in its simplicity. Gut wrenching in its difficulty to accomplish.

picked it up at the airport and loved it! can start reading from anywhere. nice for flights, long trips etc..definately recomended.
A Virtual "Spritual Slang Book".......2006-06-02
Again we get a motley grouping of Hollywood actors, a musician or two, an author or two and a handful of selected "spiritual leaders" and a staunch atheist. Put together a slang book of questions on the afterlife and spirituality and hear the mixed bag of fluffy answers that have no single grounding but all relativistic at best, emotionally laced answers. The one person I most respected in the book honestly was Jack Nicholson who was very honest about what he believed. He just wasn't sure and was honest about it, he didn't fill up a fluffy philosophy on what he "felt about the questions" but was down-to-Earth and for that I applaud him. He was the only person besides the atheist that were honest. Jack wasn't sure and Prof.Richard Dawkins was adamantly athiest/fatalist(which is a religious worldview prof.)
There was not a real grounded apologetist in the bunch so the only thing left was emotional fluff from column A,B or C.
Read it if you want to "feel" whatever but it was just another religion-flavored slang book of fluff.

On Sight and Insight is a wholly remarkable and wondrous book that should be read by anyone with an interest in blindness, perception, embodiment and human existence. In this book John Hull documents his journey from the world of sight into the world of blindness, by describing what it is like to make this transition, through detailed and revealing descriptions of his daily activities, and by giving us his dreams, thoughts and reflections. His journey, in fact, is from a world of sight into one of insight, for it is not only a story of a courageous and emotionally complex life-transformation, but a profound study of who we are, how we see or do not see, touch or do not touch, how we relate to our world-and most of all an insightful study of what it means to be with one another. Anyone who reads this book will not quite hear a voice or touch or see a face in the same way again.

"On Sight & Insight, a Journey into the world of Blindness", by John Hull
After losing much of my vision over the past four years due to Retinitis Pigmentosa, I went looking for more information about going blind.
I recently finished this book and I've had a few days to reflect upon it. The book is written by John Hull, who tells about going blind as an adult. As a young man, John has blinding cataracts. He was blind for quite some time in the hospital, long enough to teach himself braille and read several chapters in the Bible.
The corrective surgery for the cataracts detached both of his retinas, one of which they were able to correct. He was blind in his left eye for the rest of his life, but his right eye stayed pretty dependable until he was about 45, and over the following three years he went completely blind.
It's a new book, John went blind in the 1980's and his book reads like a diary or journal. It's very easy to read and John easily holds the reader's attention.
John mostly tells what it is like, emotionally, to go blind. He talks about all aspects of blindness, but the focus on the book is to share how it affected and affects his emotions and his spirit; his soul. John really shares of himself in this book, it's very frank and in some places painful.
However, I enjoyed having read the book because it provided me with some information I was lacking, helped me come to terms with some things that before I could not conceive. I've been worried so much, the nagging question is always "What will it be like to go blind, how will I live my life?".
While John's book certainly doesn't fully answer that question, it does allow the reader to gain much insight into what it is like, at least from one man's perspective. While it did confirm a few fears I have, at least I feel more informed now; certainly the unknown is still more frightening than my actual fate.
I wish I could say more about this book, I think Mr Hull did a fine job. I refer to him as John in this review because I feel so close to him and his family, having read the book. If you want to know what it's like for an adult to go blind, John's perspective is wonderfully told in this book.
