Customer Reviews:
Very Informative.......2007-05-25
This book hits about every subject you need to know. I found it very informative and would recommend it to anyone starting out in management, or to anyone who would like to brush up on their management skills.
Excellent Basic Management Skills.......2007-03-14
I was just promoted to Manager, and this book has been a very useful tool.
It provides very easy to understand concepts and guides you on both basic and advanced managerial skills that you need to develop or improve in order to become a better manager.
Almost every page that I read on it can be applied to my day to day activities as a manager.
Managing for Dummies is a Manager's must have.
A must-read for every new or experienced manager.......2006-11-27
I hold a BS in Business Management and thought I had been taught pretty much everything there was to know about business management... was I mistaken! This book should be required text for every business management student. Managing for Dummies is easy to read, easy to understand, and makes implimenting the methods defined in the book easy.
This is just what I was looking for!.......2005-12-18
I'm fairly new to the business world and when the possibility of a promotion to supervisor arose, I knew I had to be ready. While I have a degree, it is not in business. I was looking for a book that would help me a)learn what issues I would have to deal with as a supervisor, b)help me prepare for the interview when they asked "what would you do in this situation" questions and c)teach me some ways to be successful (or at least not fail!).
This book did all of the above. The authors skipped the boring theory of management and delved into real world issues that managers and supervisors face. I highly recommend this book.
Good content but too repetetive and too much fluff.......2005-01-24
This is the first dummies book that actually made me feel like a dummy. They actually take the time to explain what a fax machine is! I'm sorry but anyone who does not know what a fax machine is does not have what it takes to be a manager, no matter how many books they read. The content that is there is great, but it is highly repetitive. Just when you think you understand how important it is to reward employees they bring it back towards the end of the book, several times. Ok, we get the point! I got bored reading this and started skimming it, just reading the bold phrases and/or the bullet points. I didn't miss anything. It's full of fluff. If you want a book to pass the time or make you fall asleep, this is a good book. But I just felt a little cheated. They take an intuitively obvious point like how delegation is useful and beat it to death. I also felt like I was watching a commercial for the authors' other books as they seem to mention them every few pages.
Overall the subjects they covered were good. I wish they would cut the fluff and cover more topics. The book could easily be one half the size. I guess it depends on the reader. If you've never managed anyone before, even a 2 person team then this book may be for you. But if you've led others before I think you'll find you already know most of what's in this book. Skim it over at the bookstore and you'll see what I mean..

Customer Reviews:
A quick guide to the Presidents.......2007-04-24
This is a great introduction to American history, excellent for mid graders beginning social studies or just anybody interested in trivia on all the presidents up to George W. Bush's early years. I loved it and used it to get to know some of the presidents that I am not too familiar with like James Monroe, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, and many of the other lesser presidents. It also goes into some detail into the great ones like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, John F. Kennedy, and so forth. It also talks about the flaws and some of the things that the men wanted to accomplish and what they didn't. There is also a list of 10 best and 10 worst presidents, and the arguments for them are pretty convincing. If there is a fault to the book it is that I really wanted more info on some of them, and all I got was the very basics. Still, great for what it is, a general once over of the most important men in the world.
A Great Broad Primer of the U.S. Presidents.......2006-07-26
I really like this book because it gives one a great overview of each president. The author doesn't hold back or gloss over any of the presidents. If he thinks one did well, he says so and why. The converse is true for the bad ones.
Each president is given a short pre-history to their presidenthood, a short overview of their actions (and mis-actions) in office and what happened to them when they left.
The edition I own goes up to Preisdent George W. Bush's first term.
I highly recommend it with you need to know the basics of a president to get you started on larger research.
Fun and Informative.......2005-09-21
This is a fun reference source for information about our Presidents. It is a valuable teaching tool and is loaded with "good stuff" and gossip to help put a human face on these men.
Great Job.......2004-04-12
Thank you BooksandPrint. The book got to me on one day before the first day for delivery. I found some minor flaws in the book including a rip on the bottom of the page on the section on Richard Nixon and a misprint on one of the elections in the back where one of the canidate got credit for more electoral votes then he was entitled. I disagree with some of the ranking of the presidents including Bill Clinton. I was amazed that Clinton was not ranke one of the worst ten presidents.
A great introduction.......2003-03-03
Do you want to know what makes a Great President? Do you want to know the names and details of some of the 43 that you've never heard of? Do you want to know the people behind the historical facts?
This book is a great introduction to US presidents for the lay reader. I bought it because I felt underinformed about American history, and couldn't name even half of our presidents. The book certainly helped increase my breadth of knowledge on the subject. It also provided enough tongue in cheek humor to make the history interesting.
After the fact I felt good enough about the book to give it away as a gift.

GMAT scores are an important part of any graduate business-school application, so you need to perform well. Suzee Vlk, long time test-prep specialist and author of several Dummies books, can help. The GMAT for Dummies is packed with useful information and strategies to help you prepare for the test. The book includes advice on how to use the book efficiently (Vlk estimates you'll need 28 hours to work through it), review chapters for all three sections of the exam, and two complete practice exams. Two chapters focusing on the analytical writing assessment portion of the exam will help you write effective essays--and remind you that schools differ regarding the importance of this section. Vlk also offers special advice for "computer illiterates" worried about taking this computer-based exam. In familiar Dummies style, Vlk includes a handy tear-out "Quick Reference Card" with a summary of the most important information and a "Part of Tens" section with "10 Dumb Things You Can Do to Mess Up Your GMAT" and 10 relaxation techniques to use before and during the exam. With its witty writing and helpful icons in the margins pointing out important information, The GMAT for Dummies makes test preparation easy and relatively painless. --C.B. Delaney

Customer Reviews:
This new edition is completely different and much bettter!.......2007-02-27
The previous reviews must be about an earlier edition of this book because I thought it was an excellent study aid for the GMAT. There were no typos that I could see, and the material was right on relevant to the way the questions are presented on the GMAT test.
The book was easy to read and actually (gasp!) made studying for the GMAT enjoyable. The practice test seemed to be at the same level as the actual GMAT, not harder and not easier.
This is a great prep tool. Check out this new edition by new authors. You won't be disappointed!
GMAT for Dummies.......2005-10-03
Review excellent for preparing someone who's been out of Undergrad for approximately 5 years. Testaking timesaving tips as valuable as practice. Included info on actual computer as well as scoring of test.
GMAT Dummmies.......2005-09-14
I think it is a great book especially when you had a lot of the material from highschool; I think it really breaks down the subject matter which is good because it is at your own pace. I recommend it!
Great book, for what it is.......2004-01-26
This is a great book if you only take it for what it is meant to be: a starting point. I purchased this book to begin studying for my GMAT with no intentions of it being the only book I would use. The book does an excellent job of explaining the GMAT in general and does a great job teaching to the writing portion of the test. The math review and verbal review are good places to start, but unless you are very strong already in these areas, you will likely need another book to complement this one. I think this is an excellent book and is certainly a much better read than any of the other GMAT prep books I have used.
Too light in content to be useful.......2003-01-27
Quite frankly this is a difficult test. Typically the ... For Dummies books do a great job in giving information on a subject. This book treats the subject matter too light. The publisher did not catch the many errors in mathematical formulas, and if this is your only reasource, your not going to do well. The first two chapters that explain basic information about the test, do an excellent job. The book looses ground quickly at that point and in the end does a poor job in preparing you for the exam if this is your only source of studing for the exam.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Leadership (2nd Edition)
ASIN: 0764551760 |
Book Description
Yogi Berra said that leading is easy, the hard part is getting people to follow. Never were truer words spoken. As anybody who’s ever been in a leadership position knows, eliciting cooperation from a group of people of any size—from a project team to an army—can be like trying to tap dance on quick sand. And while leadership definitely comes easier to some people, it isn’t something you have to be born with. In fact, as the authors of this step-by-step guide to becoming a leader demonstrate, leaders are made, not born, and just about anybody can become an effective leader.
Whether you aspire to being a leader, have had leadership thrust upon you, or are already a leader and want to be better at it, Leadership For Dummies is for you. Short on theory and long on practical strategies and surefire techniques, it arms you with what you need to:
- Build and flex your leadership muscles
- See opportunity amid change and crisis
- Develop your own leadership style
- Lead with communication, encouragement, and promotion
- Recognize the ten telltale behaviors of true leaders
- Earn greater respect, success, and recognition
Teacher, preacher, coach, project leader...no matter what specific leadership role you wish to fill, Leadership For Dummies provides you with a solid foundation on which to build. You’ll discover:
- What it takes to be a leader and understanding your own leadership potential
- How to be flexible and adaptive without compromising your principles
- Understanding leadership as an ongoing process and preparing to assume the role of leader
- Leadership in everyday life—including tips on volunteering and taking a more active role in your family, community, and the world at large
- What vision is, why it is so necessary to great leadership, and how to develop it
- How to create winning teams and keep them following your lead
Yes, you have what it takes to be an effective leader. Now let Leadership For Dummies show you how to connect with it and be a mover and shaker in your own right.
Customer Reviews:
Good overview on the subject, but could be better.......2006-06-15
Ok, so turning to the for dummies books on a new subject is not a bad approach, and this book does provide a good overview. However, the author make many leaps of logic and did not do a very good job researching is antedotes.
One example is when the author talks about Pres. Truman being a product of the Pendergast political machine in St. Louis. Well, it was actually Kansas City. Not the point of the story, but it does show that the author was careless with his facts.
A Left-leaning, Politically Correct Approach to Leadership.......2004-09-23
This is an excellent how-to guide for left-leaning "touchy-feely" types who think, as the authors do, that "one of the reasons that violence in schools has increased among teenagers is that they spend too much time in church hearing that their behavior is considered evil and aberrant" (p. 325) and who write things like dress codes "are a vestige of the old-fashioned command economy and should be allowed to die the death they deserve" (p. 313).
Equating attending church with high school killings is actually offensive, in addition to being flat wrong. And in the real world group identity is helped along precisely by things like dress codes - unless you are a zoned-out hippie. But then again, hippies all dressed alike. Interesting to see the degree of conformity among our diversity-mongers!
Some of the authors' ideas are downright weird: "One of the greatest stumbling blocks to creating a diverse workplace is toleration....Toleration at the very least is condescension." (p. 313) That a major basis for modern Western political evolution of democracy would so glibly be consigned to the garbage can is a sign the authors are not very deep or serious thinkers. Accepting the right of others to do as they see fit does not imply one must agree with what they do or morally condone it - that's the essence of diversity. The authors seem to imply but like most people on the political left never come out and say, that we should accept as equally legitimate just about everything. It's that veiled nihilism parading as enlightenment that makes the text so useless. It is not connected to the real world!!
The nucleus of the text is really quite simple, but there is considerable embellishment and fluff; a good editing could have pared this 350-plus page work down to a more merciful 100-125 pages.
Leaders Are Not Born But Made--It Begins Here!!.......2003-06-16
It's an easy read and can be applied immediately to you situation. The book brings the basics of leadership traits and principles to the reader similar to the military leadership books I've read in the USMC. So many times have I held jobs where a manager, although excellent in managing projects, through some lack of sensitity or judgement created an uproar that cause moral to fall and people to become resentful and leave. There are many stories in the press of managers and CEOs restricting "bathroom breaks", playing favorites, freezing wages and laying off employees while taking huge "bonuses" like American Airlines and ENRON. What's present here is basic but essential information for anyone in a leadership roll whether at work, church functions, or managing a family trip. This should be required reading for everyone BEFORE you find yourself in a situation as leader. The boss could be out for a whole month tommorrow. Can you keep the team working smoothly while the boss is out or is it party time?
Leadship for the Dumb.......2002-04-22
This is a remarkably barren book, perhaps the worst I have ever read. The author considers the epitome of leadership to be a left wing american-football-quarterback save-the-whale ban-the-bomb activist. If you are not athletic nor overly sentimental with the obsessions of nanny-state socialism you will find this book patronozing and offensive.
It is also without content - the discourse within being bluff, baffle, waffle, twaddle and blag. There is no inspiration or insight to be gleaned, not even to the degree of a crude platitude.
A better book for leadership is Henry V with its lessons in luminous articulation and its ideal of the noble spirit. It doesnt pretend to have the breadth of Leadership for Dummies, but then what use is an ocean of salt water when you are begging for a cup of tea. ;oD
Leadership for Dummies.......2000-03-28
Having just completed a "Leadership" MBA program at at local University, I was pleased to find this "Dummies" book.
The book introduces many different aspects leadership, in a interesting manner, similar to all of the other "Dummies" series.
The book tells us what it takes to be a leader, the leadership process, the art of leadership, vision and team building.
at 358 pages the book provides an good understanding of what it takes to be a leader, and how we can develop our own skills to develop into effective leaders.
The book was exteremely effective in reinforcing the same leadership principles discussed in my MBA program...but for those of you who don't want to spend the $5K on an MBA leadershiop course..thsi book will get you there!
Strong recommendation...does that mean I am a Dummy?

Let's be clear about what this item is: it's a boxed set of two books. One, The iMac for Dummies, is a superb guide to the iMac by David Pogue, an excellent writer and long-time Mac icon. The other, The Internet for Macs for Dummies, is a solid introduction to electronic mail and Web surfing as viewed through a Mac lens. If you don't have either book already, The iMac Internet Kit for Dummies represents a decent value--you save about 25 percent on the collective price of the two books purchased separately.
The iMac for Dummies emphasizes the iMac hardware and the fundamentals of Mac OS 8.5 (which is largely the same as later versions). Pogue deploys his keen wit and gift for describing detail (without being a bore) against everything that comes in the iMac box. Every iMac user should read this book.
The Internet for Macs for Dummies appeals to Internet novices. Author Charles Seiter explains how to hook your Macintosh to the Internet, communicate with other people, and visit cool Web sites while online. He doesn't restrict himself to the iMac but covers the same Mac OS 8.5 that the iMac runs. --David Wall
Topics covered: Setting up your iMac, using Mac OS 8.5, using the software that ships with the iMac, connecting to the Internet, Internet Explorer 4.0 and Netscape Navigator 4.5, and Web searching.
Customer Reviews:
The iMac Internet for Dummies Bundle.......1999-11-28
The content of this book is easy to understand, however, too elementary. This book is not necessarily for an i-Mac beginner, but someone who has never owned a computer.
The title is totally misleading.......1999-10-19
I agree word for word with the reader from Brixey, MO. The description should have made it clear what the Kit consisted of. Delightful as anything by David Pogue is, I certainly don't need two of the same book. Major bummer!
The title of the offering is misleading........1999-10-15
I expected David Pogue's delightful and insightful take on using my new IMac specifically to surf the Internet. What I got was David Pogue's IMac for Dummies (a terrific book which I had already bought and which included some info on surfing the Net!) and The Internet for Macs for Dummies, a general thing by some other guy on using any old Mac to surf the Internet.Am I disappointed? You bet!
"This is the one for new iMac owners" Fred Showker, UGNN.......1999-05-25
If you are a new iMac owner you'll want to pick up this book -- for sure. Two reasons: 1) David Pogue probably knows more about Macs than any other writer on the scene today, and 2) Davids wit and personality shine through every page making 'Dummies' not only highly informative but a pleasure to read as well. This one will get you up and running in no time at all. . . . Fred Showker, The User Group Network News Service
