5 out of 5 stars Hooray for DUMMY Books........2007-02-26

Well organized as usual with a Dummy Book. Easy to find answers to questions. Love the idea list for home businesses. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Be Your Own Boss!.......2006-01-01

I would classify this book as more of a general overview of all the important things you need to consider before actually starting your business. For particulars you will definitely want to contact a good business attorney and a good accountant. Not to mention, you'll need to interface a lot initially with your local city/state governments to get tax forms and your business license.

This book seems to work best if you already have an idea for your business. Granted , they do throw out a few ideas for things like medical billing and place an emphasis on what could be described as services geared towards either elderly folks, or dual income families who are too busy to deal with traditional family type things. If you already kind of know what you think you want to try, this book will primarily help you fine tune your thoughts, and bring them to reality.

The section on Managing Money is probably one of the best things anyone can read. Obviously, if you're in business, the goal is to make money. By understanding the basic accounting principles presented in Part II of the book, you'll be well on your way to managing your business money wisely.

For general knowledge, my favorite part of the book was Part V. Here you will find Top 10 lists that describe common myths and pitfalls, and even success producing ideas to help you on your journey as a home based business owner. If you have a family, you'll want to take note on the section about what I would call, "The good way to set up your office." Which means, keeping distractions from the spouse and kids to a minimum while you are working at home.

There is a section on marketing, but in lieu of just that section alone, I would definitely recommend "Guerilla Marketing" by Jay Conrad Levinson. It's a very dry read, but there are a lot of interesting and unique ideas for getting word out about your business with out spending much (if any) money. And when you're in business for yourself, the more advertising you can get for free, the better!

I really like the way the authors describe how to get in to the home based business. Meaning, the idea of working at your full-time job (which you may or may not like) while you test the waters with your own venture on the side. That's excellent advice because if your business idea doesn't take off, you're not stuck without any income. Plus you can stay under your current employer's medical plan (A HUGE money saver!)

Overall there is so much information in here, it will be hard to take it in all at once. Likewise, as I stated earlier, the most important thing to remember is make sure and check with a professional accountant and lawyer in your area before/as you get started so they can help walk you through the particulars in your area. Every city and state is different in terms of setting up a business when it comes to taxes and getting your license.

Bottom line is, if you are semi-seriously considering starting a home based business, do yourself a favor and pick up this book and read it through. You'll get some good advice and knowledge on what it takes to be your own boss. Of course the other thing you can do is, talk to other small business owners in your area. Take them to lunch and learn as much as you can from those who are successful small business owners.

I think this book is great, concise, and entertaining. It is just what I was wanting to know.

5 out of 5 stars The obvious choice for anyone starting a home based business.......2005-06-22

Paul Edwards shares his great knowledge in yet another book to help anyone start thier own business. This book will answer every question you can come up with and answer it in a way that is easy for anyone to understand. This is why it will help you to become successful. I highly recommend this book, it has great tips, information and ideas to help you start and run your own home based business successfully.

3 out of 5 stars Another home-base business book from the Edwards.......2005-03-18

Working at home seems like a dream for many. The Edwards have written several books on working on home. Their advice is sound and filled with common sense. However, this book does not rate a 5 because it is lacking in details about individual businesses you can start at home. They do have other home businesses books, as I stated. These are filled with 3-5 pages at the most on some individual businesses, but does not go too far into details about each, obviously. But for an overview of starting a home-based business at all, this is a decent book.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2007-06-01

It may sound quitchy, but man, these for dummies books are packed full of information, easy to read and sometimes downright funny.

Another stellar resource from Hungry Minds, Inc.

4 out of 5 stars Should be "Freelance WRITING for Dummies".......2005-02-26

That's what the author is and that's the perspective she writes from. Which is fine with me, because that's what I'm looking to do.

For freelance biz writers, this is a good one-stop-shopping kind of book. I've seen plenty of freelance writing books, and this really addressed my needs transitioning from staff writer at a software company to contractor to freelancer. Too many of these books are all about breaking into magazines (VERY tough to do) or start off by suggesting that all you need to do is just open the Rolodex from your old job and start phoning those CEOs you know. Easy! Others have an aggressive, in-your-face "gonzo" approach to marketing that can be profitable or off=putting. If you're not comfotable with that style, it'll also be UNprofitable.

By contrast, I *like* the upbeat tone, professional tone of this book. I'm tired of all the negativity in freelance books of the "why you'll likely fail" variety. Nobody ever succeeded at something by believing from the outset that they would fail. And with so many others around us willing to say that, who needs a book to say it? The book covers that ground quickly and then gets on with it.

Much of the focus - such as setting up a comfortable work environment and tracking your billable hours - is really targeted to writers and others whose work is mainly sedentary and likely at home. If this doesn't describe you, you may find the book a little frustrating.

I'm just getting started in freelancing from contracting for others, but I found the information in it to be detailed, thorough and accessible. Besides "Freelancing for Dummies," I like Peter Bowerman's books ("The Well-Fed Writer" and "Back for Seconds") a lot, too, on the subject. By contrast, Bowerman skipped the whole "write a business plan" thing. If you're looking to go into freelance writing, these 3 books should be enough to get you off to a good start.

2 out of 5 stars Ego-Stroking For Dummies.......2004-07-12

"Shiny, happy people wheeling deals" should be the sub-title for this book. The profession of freelancing is for the go getting, self-imaging, assertive (most times aggressive) dynamo. Drake's book failed to include this brief but crucial bit of information in Freelancing for Dummies.

Drake does a wonderful job empowering the reader, then again so does Maxwell in The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader. Both books, although I am sure they sell wonderfully as they are corporate products, are not grounded. Drake should have addressed all of her audiences, not just her likeminded Type-A personality readers.

Some of the contents such as setting rates, collecting fees and paying taxes are needed. However, sections on how to set up one's chair are not. And, the chapter on building an extended staff is, again, assuming that the reader is either an egomaniac with the knowledge to boot, or a former corporate executive.

If you are full of yourself and can't wait to tackle the world with your own business, this is the book for you. If you are a little more on the average side, I suggest you read Sorenson's Power Freelancing. Good luck!

4 out of 5 stars You want a freelancing business? This is THE BOOK!.......2004-06-05

Frankly, Susan M. Drake has written extremely well. With 8 years of freelancing experience behind me, I can only nod my head and agree with her with every turn of the page.

Written in a very simple manner and easily understood...no fanfare, no big words, just facts.

She covered almost everything there is to cover for the topic of freelancing and you know what? It REALLY is a book for dummies.

3 out of 5 stars Same Old Stuff.......2003-07-29

First let me say this: If you are a new "Freelancing for Dummies" will be helpful in putting you on path to getting published. But I do wish the author had put MORE into it, in terms of material that hasn't been seen elsewhere.

I also find the author to be overly optimistic, and writing from the viewpoint of someone who has dipped in and out of the profession, and most likely has an alternate means of support. Then, too, the author tries to cover too much, and leaves this reader wondering whether she is addressing those new to writing for publication, or published writers who want to take a shot at writing for a living. (To be fair to Ms. Drake, one or more editors may have had too heavy a hand in the mix.)

The bottom line: Don't ignore this title, but if you've read more than one other book for beginning freelancers you may do better to pick up some books for more advanced writers, and/or genre- or field-specific writing.

4 out of 5 stars Buy the latest version.......2007-09-16

This book is useful when you are just starting an online business. Just make sure you buy the latest version so that some information is not outdated by the time you are ready to set up your online business.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it's weight in gold if you're going online!.......2007-08-18

I just got this book last week and I'm not even done with it and have gotten so many 'nuggets' that it has more than paid for itself already! It's well written, easy to understand, organized extremely well for easy reference and full of helpful resources.

The section on 'Keeping it legal' saved me great error already (I was going to buy a domain name that could've infringed on a copyright) and I have found several free web builders online that are 10x's better than what I had been using. There's so much practical information in this book that I no longer feel guilty for buying it new.

This book is zero fluff, tons of examples and free or very reasonable resources, and lots of food for thought. The table of contents is so detailed that it makes for a quick reference (does anyone read a book like this cover to cover?) Greg Holden's writing style is personable and to the point and very easy to understand.

I truly don't understand all the reviews that say this book is no good, not sure what they have been reading, but I have no less than a dozen books of this nature, and this is one of the few that isn't 75% fluff. I'm somewhat of a website newbie, starting about a year ago trying to do my own website. It's alot harder (for me)than I originally thought and have tried no less than 6 different hosting accounts, 4 different online web builders, and 6 different web editing software trials (Expressions, dreamweaver, publisher, coffee cup, page spinner and frontpage). One of the best discoveries in this book was that Firefox offered a FREE...quality...web editor!

This is the 2007 edition, maybe people were referring to the earlier version of the same title. I have gotten way more out of this book than I thought I would. I guess I must be a true "Dummie". It's definitely worth your time checking it out if you are new to the online business world, you can always resell it on Amazon and recover your moola.

2 out of 5 stars this one really is for dummies.......2007-08-05

One of the worst "For Dummies" books I've ever read. Normally, I'd rate for dummies books a 3 or 4.

3 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2007-04-19

You could do an online search and find more information than this book gives you. I did not enjoy and I returned it. It is broad and never really gives you step by step instrucions on how the webite actually works and how to create it.

2 out of 5 stars very rudimentary, broad overview.......2007-04-14

People who use the internet regularly will not get much out of this book--it's no joke when it says "for dummies". Greg Holden does give a broad overview of the many aspects to starting an online business but even then the information is outdated and at some points, simply not accurate making you wonder where this guy gets his facts.

In an environment that is not only competitive but also changes rapidly it is important that you are equipped with the most up to date information. This book however, still proclaims AOL king and web sites using tables and frame "advanced". Although the book was published in 2006 (and in its 4th revision), it feels more like it belongs to the 90's.

So even if you are new to the internet and need a place to start I recommend you find yourself a different book.

The author claims that if you start the bid at $.99 with no reserve, that no matter what the item is, that you'll get more for it than you thought you'd get for it.

i don't know if that's true. I've seen many auctions on eBay where the seller got ripped off because only one person bid on an item, and the bid was for $.99.

While years ago the author sold his Viper using the suggestions in his book and made a profit on it, I don't think that in today's market that would happen. Even with his suggestions, things don't work that way anymore, at least from what I've seen happening.

It isn't a bad ebook. The suggestions are pretty good if you're auctioning stuff that isn't expensive and you could afford to lose money on. However, if it is something that really is valuable, you shouldn't necessarily count on selling it for what it is worth if you follow his suggestions.

      5 out of 5 stars What can I say...it works!.......2006-12-01

The copyright on this may be 2004, but if you are just getting started selling on eBay this little gem is invaluable. I followed the advice, and with literally thousands of other products comparable to mine, I was one of the few who actually received bids and sold my items. I attribute everything to the sound principles in this ebook.
It's fun to read, packed with good tips, and worth the price just for the sample email letters included! I encountered a "Troll" with my first auction, but thanks to this ebook I knew exactly what was happening and what to do.
There may be other books that provide all the technical aspects, but this is the FIRST one you should read if you're a newbie.

...you're looking for good advice for selling a few items on eBay. It has very good advice for maximizing your bids, writing your ad, etc. However, if you're looking for something to guide you in starting an ongoing eBay business at a high level, this is not the choice to make. In addition, if you are already using eBay to run your "virtual garage sales", you're not going to find much here that you don't already know. So I suppose my 1 star rating is based as much on my expectations and goals as it is the book itself.

      4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly informative.......2006-04-24

I've just finished this ebook and I am quite pleased. I've read a few books of this sort and they are usually just useless fluff, and none really answer the question of what to sell on ebay. This book does do that, and gives pros and cons of different ways to purchase products.

There are a few issues with the book. Its a bit out of date, it was publised in 2004, so some of the information is no longer valid. Also the author doesnt seem to be above slightly shady practices, like misrepresentation(which someone else explained in a previous post), or padding shipping(which everyone clearly does, but still its a bit shady).

I was able to get this from my library's electronic resources, but I would recommend buying it if you cant do that. Its targeted to fairly new ebayers who have sold a few items and have a feedback of atleast 5 but preferably 10, and are looking to start at least a part-time business.

2 out of 5 stars Outdated and dangerous to your bottom line........2005-12-11

This ebook describes the eBay of yesteryear. Today, when it comes to pricing your items, this ebook's mandate to start every auction at $.99 or less is a prescription for disaster. It's a buyers market on eBay and unless you know the demand for your item you may well be giving it away. That might be fine if you're just clearing out the closet but not if your buying merchandise to resell.

There's some good basic info in here but nothing you couldn't find at eBay and its many forums for free.

If your going to buy and resell product on eBay skip this book and read "eBay Strategies : 10 Proven Methods to Maximize Your eBay Business" buy Scott Wingo. It explains what sells and what doesn't sell well on eBay.
