3 out of 5 stars A rush into print?.......2000-01-17

This book includes an excellent spectrum of HR material, covered with a reasonable degree of thoroughness, considering its ambitious scope. It's quite readable, as well, making it easy to digest and retain. In fact, it helped me pass the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification exam from SHRM.

However, the book contains a number of typos, and while most of them aren't serious, it appears that the chapters were renumbered after the answers to the practice questions were already typeset -- making their answer key virtually useless and utterly unreliable. The answers to one chapter's questions are labelled as being for another chapter's ... a real mess.

I got the impression that this book was rushed into print in order to meet some deadline. While the textual content is very good, I caution the reader not to rely on the practice questions, not only because of the answer key problem, but because they are not particularly clear or well-written.

5 out of 5 stars it's one of the best books i have ever seen.......1999-04-07

    Book Description

Fundamentals of Human Resource Management, by Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart and Wright is specifically written to provide a complete introduction to human resource management. While it doesn’t cover the depths of human resource management theory, the book is rich with examples and engages students through application.

Fundamentals differs from the hardback textbook by the same author team. Instead of a higher level of theory that’s geared towards the HRM majors, this book focuses on the uses of human resources for the general business manager. Issues such as strategy are reduced to give a greater focus on how human resources management is used in the everyday work environment. It provides students with the background necessary to manage human resources effectively and to be able to distinguish good from poor human resource management practices and how they impact business.

Instructors are provided with a robust ancillary package that includes a comprehensive instructor’s manual, test bank, PowerPoint presentation and a complete Online Learning Center to make course preparation easy.

    Book Description

For almost five decades, Fundamentals of Private Pensions has been the most authoritative text and reference book on private pensions in the US in the world. The revised and updated eighth edition adds to past knowledge while providing exciting new perspectives on the provision of retirement income. This new edition is organized into six main sections dealing with a variety of separable pension issues. Section I provides an introductory discussion on the historical evolution of the pension movement and how pensions fit into the patchwork of the whole retirement income security system in the United States. It includes a discussion about the economics of the tax incentives that have played a role in stimulating pension offerings and in the structure of the benefits provided. Section 2 lays out the regulatory environment in which private pension plans operate. Section 3 investigates the various forms of retirement plans that are available to workers to determine how they are structured in practical terms. Section 4 focuses on the economics of pensions. Several of the chapters in this section update and refine material from the prior. New chapters in this volume describe the conversion of some traditional pensions to new hybrid forms, including cash balance and pension equity plans, and the growing phenomenon of phased retirement and the issues raised for employer-sponsored pensions. Section 5 explores the funding and accounting environments in which private employer-sponsored retirement plans operate. The concluding section investigates the handling of assets in employer-sponsored plans and their valuation as well as the insurance provision behind the benefit promises implied by the plans. This latest edition of Fundamentals of Private Pensions will prove invaluable reading for both academics and professionals working in the area of pensions and pension management.

    3 out of 5 stars A good reference.......2002-09-14

A good reference book for anyone connected with a pension or profit sharing arrangement. It is not a guide to IRAs, Keogh plans, SEPs, rather it focuses on traditional defined contribution and defined benefit plans. While this book seems written for more for budding actuaries, those wishing to study design alternatives or asset management will find this book provides a good background. I find two flaws with the book.

First is the lack of examples. While the book discusses full funding limitations, it does not show you an example calculation. While it tells you how to calculate the minimum liability, it does not show you an example of how to present it in the financial statements. This book is not a text book, but it would be very helpful to see some real examples in practice rather than only discussions about the rationale behind the method.

Second, the single chapter on pension accounting is weak. Issues not mentioned include accounting for minimum liability, disclosures under FAS 132, understanding the relationship between funding and expense, curtailments and other plan amendments, the interrelationships between the conflicting limitations of ERISA/IRC/GAAP, the effect of pension assumptions on the financial statements and the impact of FAS 87 for an over funded plan on the financial statements of the sponsor. The perspective focuses more on the reasons the accounting standards exist, not the strategy or day-to-day issues of how the pension affects the financial statements of the sponsor. If accounting is what you need, buy a current intermediate accounting book.

4 out of 5 stars Very complete yet sometimes boring: serious stuff !.......2000-11-07

Very coplete study, covering almost all imaginable subjects, from actuarial maths to investment management to organisation and HR aspects of pension provision. This is not a manual, though. Get a simpler and less in detail book to get a general view of the topic, and then use "Fundamentals..." as reference.

Would you like to determine your own motivation / leadership style? Are you task-oriented or people-oriented? Although I have not used the entire book, Chapter 12 of this book presents several self-assessment surveys based on McGregor's Theory-X / Theory-Y, McClelland's Achievement-Power-Affiliation, and Herzberg's Motivators-Hygienics models. Chapter 10 has a self-assessment survey based on Likert's System (Authoritarian-Benevolent Authoritarian-Consultative-Participative). Very useful.

Of interest to anyone who wishes to understand more about employee rights and the revolutionizing of employment models, Employment and Employee Rights addresses the issue of rights in the workplace from the perspective of both employees and employers. In the process of exploring arguments for guaranteeing rights, the book examines the relational, developmental, and economic bases upon which they are founded. New dimensions of employment are also considered, including a model that incorporates growing workplace diversity, builds upon our understanding of the legal landscape, and expands upon our justifications for recognizing and protecting rights.Employment and Employee Rights defends employee rights as economic value added for employers and companies, and it suggests a model where employees engage in meaningful work, maintain their autonomy, and exercise a level of control over their employment.

          Book Description

Fundamentals of Performance Technology offers a brief overview of each major component of a Human Performance Technology Model that addresses diagnosing workplace situations, identifying causes, selecting appropriate interventions, implementing change, and evaluating results. The second edition contains two new appendices that describe the ISPI developed Standards of Performance of Technology and map the content of Fundamentals of Performance Technology and Performance Improvement Interventions to those Standards.

Performance technology as a means to improve organizational and individual performance is often shroud in complex language, rarefied theory, and bewildering applications. Several excellent publications either elucidate Performance Technology's whys and whats or make clear its many hows, but few adequately and comprehensively clarify both.

Authors Darlene Van Tiem of University of Michigan, James Moseley of Wayne State University, and Joan Conway Dessinger of the Lake Group have recently developed the second edition of Fundamentals of Performance Technology: A Guide to Improving People, Process, and Performance. This guidebook broadly explains performance technology as an established, systematic, and reproducible method of improving organizational and individual performance (the HPT Model). It also provides applications of performance technology at work in a variety of environments, and proffers dozens of performance tools to help the reader improve his or her own performance technology practice.

So what is Performance Technology? According to the authors, performance technology is the systematic process of linking business goals and strategies with the workforce responsible for achieving goals. Moreover, performance technology practitioners study and design processes that bring about increased performance in the workplace using a common methodology to understand, inspire, and improve. And, finally, performance technology systematically analyzes performance problems and their underlying causes and describes exemplary performance and success indicators.

Van Tiem et al have authored a guidebook that makes performance technology understandable and achievable by assembling an easy-to-read, easy-to-apply, and comprehensive explanation of the factors affecting workplace behavior and using a commonsense approach and consistent structure.

In Fundamentals of Performance Technology, the authors offer a brief overview of each major component of the HPT Model, its theoretical underpinnings, and major thinkers, covering:
          diagnosing workplace situations
          identifying causes
          selecting doable, adequate interventions
          implementing changes, and
          evaluating results

In addition, each of these sections is complemented by:
Illustrative real-life Case Studies showing practical applications from a variety of workplace environments; and
Job Aids -- or performance support tools -- to help the reader bring about real workplace performance improvement. Fully indexed and featuring a glossary of performance technology terms, an extensive bibliography and selected readings, and dozens of reproducible performance tools, Fundamentals of Performance Technology not only simplifies the practice of Performance Technology, it shows you how it has worked and how to do it.

The Second Edition contains two new appendices that describe the ISPI developed Standards of Performance of Technology and map the content of Fundamentals of Performance Technology and Performance Improvement Interventions to those Standards.

          Book Description

Common sense has never been a hot management topic - but David Freemantle's latest book advocates common sense as the key to successful people management. This controversial, punchy and stimulating book lists simple, straightforward ideas which are designed to challenge managers and make them think 'this is common sense - so why don't I do it?' Forget management trends and the latest quick-fix solution but stick to basic principles such as 'pay well', 'eliminate favourtism' and 'listen and take action'. This book will make managers think seriously about how they manage their people to get the best from them.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent - a realistic, common-sense approach.......2001-06-12

If you are the kind of person who feels like punching someone when you hear stupid management-speak like "people-centred leadership" then you will love this book!

Here is an author who offers useful advice but who doesn't try to redefine the obvious with American management consultancy jargon. His approach is that good management is about common sense and the difficulties in APPLYING it. All 80 points are brief and easy to understand but, like most common-sense ideas, can take a lifetime to fully conquer.

4 out of 5 stars A good source of inspiration for managers.......1999-09-16

As a former senior manager in a Fortune 500 company, one of my personal goals was to help my direct reports to become better managers, and to help in that process I'd give a copy of David Freemantle's to each new manager. As a business consultant, my clients often turn to me to help develop leadership development programs for their managers, and this book serves as one of my sources of inspiration. This book, when combined with action plans and measurement systems makes for a powerful way to systematically make new managers more effective.
