2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2007-10-03

I am not sure whether my negative perception of this book arises more from my disliking the book or the subject matter, but I felt like I had trouble learning from it as well as I have from other textbooks. I generally rely on the text to clarify anything I missed from a professor's lecture, but this one was not that helpful for me. I'm sure this is related to the fact that I am absolutely horrible at accounting, but I was hoping that the textbook could save me and teach me whatever I was missing in class... no such luck!

4 out of 5 stars Good starting book for Managerial Accounting.......2007-02-26

Clearly written. Although it assumes some basic knowledge about accounting, the writing technique is such that there is very little background knowledge that you have to go refresh yourself with in order to make sense of the new information. For a novice at accounting like me, this was easy to understand, with good examples and illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars It is really useful in real business world!!.......2006-11-16

I am a MBA candidate in US and will return to Japan next year.
My background is engineer in Japanese manufacturing company.
Even now, this textbook teaches us powerful tools and especially in factory accounting. The knowledge for budgeting and how to evaluate it will help me in the future.
I will bring this book back to Japan and try to use it in the real world!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-10-11

The writing may not be perfect, but it's still a great textbook, probably the best you can find.

After all, there is a reason that so many colleges use this book. You will learn a great deal whether you use this book for a class or for your own study.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2006-02-15

This is a poorly written textbook; rambling and fragmented information is presented on a piecemeal basis rather than in a clear, concise and well-organized manner. Important information belonging to one subject-matter chapter, is often presented as "aside" information in other chapters on wholly different subjects. This textbook appears to have been written by an author who forgot to take his ADHD medication. This "substandard" quality has become common place with this particular publishing company, Prentice Hall, to include its many subsidiaries (Pearson, Thompson, Southwestern, etc.), to the detriment of the education system.

Book Description

As the long-time best-seller, Garrison has helped guide close to 2 million students through the challenging waters of managerial accounting since it was first published. It identifies the three functions managers must perform within their organizations-plan operations, control activities, and make decisions-and explains what accounting information is necessary for these functions, how to collect it, and how to interpret it. To achieve this, Managerial Accounting, 11/E, focuses, now as in the past, on three qualities: Relevance: Every effort is made to help students relate the concepts in this book to the decisions made by working managers. With insightful chapter openers, the popular Managerial Accounting in Action segments within the chapters, and stimulating end-of-chapter exercises, a student reading Garrison should never have to ask "Why am I learning this?" Balance: There’s more than one type of business, and so Garrison covers a variety of business models, including not-for-profit, retail, service, and wholesale organizations as well as manufacturing. In the eleventh edition, service company examples are highlighted with icons in the margins of the text. Clarity: Generations of students have praised Garrison for the friendliness and readability of its writing, but that’s just the beginning. Technical discussions have been simplified, material has been reordered, and the entire book carefully retuned to make teaching-and learning-from Garrison as easy as it can be. In addition, the supplements package is written by Garrison, Noreen, and Brewer, ensuring that students and professors will work with clear, well-written supplements that employ consistent terminology.

The items arrived as expected; the price of the book was below the university bookstore.

The condition of the book when I received was not as good as stated. I did expedited shipping but it was just as slow as the regular shipping rate.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-01-03

This book was required for the class I took. The Ready Notes is a bound set of Powerpoint slides (3 per page). The instructor did not use the entire set of slides. I could have taken notes during the lecture and saved the money.

It is good book to learn managerial accounting and it also good to keep it as a reference.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Managerial Economics Text book.......2006-11-03

It was the text book of this course.
It's not really needed to buy it to catch up with this course,
but this book has good samples and cases to read.

5 out of 5 stars hip business economics.......2006-05-16

This is not your average dry and boring managerial economics book. The writing is great, it covers all the major topics, and there are plenty of real life applications. THIS BOOK ROCKS.

5 out of 5 stars A new age economics book.......2005-11-01

This book is leaps and bounds more impressive than most managerial economics books. The newest concepts in economics like auctions, moral hazard, sophisticated pricing and adverse selection are given full chapter treatments. Not only do the authors clearly explain these concepts, but they show how they are applied in the business world.

I was also impressed with their revised game theory chapter. Instead of the usual dry mathematical treatment, the chapter uses game theory to illustrate the importance of strategic principles. I found the chapter more helpful than any other treatment on game theory.

The authors are professors at The Wharton School and use the book in their class. I can see why Wharton is a top ranked business school. Their students definitely have an advantage in learning from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wharton Rules.......2005-09-08

My first reason to buy this book is that i always felt a lack of knoledge in general economics, than you must consider the autors. Its easy to read and interesting. Full of examples and written in a way that teach you.
For me its one of the best books i ever read.
I love it.

5 out of 5 stars A significant improvement.......2005-03-14

I reviewed the 5th edition of this book and thought it was good. This sixth edition is significantly better and in my view is the top book in managerial economics. The authors are from the Wharton School of Business, one of the top ranked business schools in the world. They have designed the book to show the reader how to apply various concepts to real world applications.

In this edition, the authors have completely revised the chapters on pricing. The book covers both simple and sophisticated pricing models. The chapter on sophisticated pricing models (e.g., two part tariffs, bundling, price discrimination) is terrific and useful to both students and managers.

Other improvements include a brand new chapter on game theory and a new chapter on adverse selection. The chapter on game theory is well written and clearly illustrates important strategic principles. I tip my hat to the authors for providing the reader with a clear understanding of how the theory works and why it is important. The chapter on adverse selection is also well written.

I have looked at several books because I am trying to choose one for the course I teach. After reading this book I look no more. This is the best book for those who really want to understand how to use economics in the business world.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars No university/college should use this.............2007-08-19

I had to use this book for an online course while earning my bachelor's degree. This book was horrible. This group of 3 authors did not do a good job. The ideas and points did not run smoothly together from one point to another. It seems like the 3 authors did not work very close together to make sure their ideas connected and related directly with each other's ideas. It was as if the authors went from talking about point A, skipping all the way to point F, then going to point C, then back to point F, etc. etc. Their ideas did not flow in an understandable sequence. I also agree about the examples. The examples were no help and they were not thorough examples of material that you would run into the real-world. The examples needed much more details in them.

2 out of 5 stars Huge waste of money.......2007-07-06

Horngren makes a notoriously dry subject even worse. It is filled with long winded verse and practically devoid of dynamic examples. Accounting is something that 'works' and can be worked out. It's best learned when applied to real world situations...this book aims to have you memorize boring definitions and then support those definitions with scarce examples. Even our professor said he's been lobbying to get this book out of my school's curriculum...too bad that didn't happen BEFORE I came along.

1 out of 5 stars Introduction to Management Accounting.......2007-02-19

This book was not at all what I expected and was not very useful.

4 out of 5 stars Introdution to management accouting.......2006-09-02

Very good. Cover is a little worn. Some pages have been written by pencil.

4 out of 5 stars Used in MBA program - Intro to Accounting.......2006-04-06

I have had experience with accounting and found this book to be fairly basic. However, if you are a beginner with no knowledge of accounting, this is a good textbook. I read one of the other reviews about how there is a bunch of useless junk on each page and while this is partially true, it would be UNBEARABLE to read if there wasn't this so called "junk" on every page. Overall a good textbook that I will keep around as a reference for accounting basics.

    Book Description

Cost Management" was written in response to changes in the global business environment. Unbridled access to information and intense competition has meant that cost accounting has become an increasingly important tool for managers and accountants alike. Most textbooks focus on content knowledge and then expect students to 'magically' demonstrate skills such as decision-making and critical thinking. "Cost Management" better prepares students for professional success by bridging the gaps between Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. Many students fail to recognize the assumptions, limitations, behavioral implications and qualitative factors that influence managerial decision-making. The dynamic, new author team focuses on cost accounting methods, techniques and the quality of cost accounting information used for decision-making to deliver a thoroughly modern treatment of cost accounting topics.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book for beginners.......2007-10-01

This book helped me to understand accounting in a simpler way though my background is engineering. Nice examples and explanations are written in simpler language that everybody can understand.

    1 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2007-09-29

I was not impressed with this book. I found it long-winded and text-y. I was expecting an Accounting-for-non-accountants approach but I couldn't have been more wrong. The more I read this book, the more I wanted to buy another book-- Accounting for Dummies. Thank God for my instructor's supplementary materials for without those, I would truly be lost. Her presentations provide more concise, to-the-point information.

If you are a non-accountant like me and you wish to understand accounting by your own terms, this is definitely not the book for you. Their exercises don't even have quick and available answers.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book........2007-09-06

I scored an A in this subject due to the good quality of the book.

2 out of 5 stars Terrible accounting text.......2007-02-26

The textbook is just poorly organized and doesn't begin to prepare you to solve the problems that are given at the end of each chapter. While it defines terms well it also leaves out explanations for most practical applications that are tested for in the problems. There is no way to check your actual work, since even the homework manager only provides solutions and not a detailed methodology as to how the answers were arrived at. It is amazing that this has survived to 7 editions without someone organizing the chapters and the material in some more organized fashion. Unrelated concepts are thrown in at the end of chapters with little explanation. If you want to learn accounting terminology this book is okay. If you want to learn how journal entries are actually recorded line by line look somewhere else. The explanation of debits and credits is perfunctory. This is not written as an entry level accounting text for non accountants.

5 out of 5 stars Food & Beverage Cost Control.......2002-06-12

As a culinary educator, I find this book both informative and user-friendly. The Excel spreadsheets and "Fun on the Web" exercises add interesting and useful technological components. The text gets to the point on all issues without belaboring the theoretical aspects of food and beverage cost controls. The book covers junior and senior level concepts in a readable format suitable for freshmen and sophomores. It is a book for all levels with real life examples. I would recommend it to anyone, be it from education or industry.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent edition!.......2001-06-19

This book is a must-read for any foodservice manager who is interested in an accurate, to the point, and technologically advanced review of food and beverage cost control methods. Controlling labor and food costs have never been more important than in today's environment. Those managers who master control procedures will succeed, and this book helps them to do just that.

The author's use of Excel spreadsheets really helps learning, as does the large number of realistic industry examples. Even the Internet plays a part in the book's usefulness when the authors refer readers to applicable web sites. Best of all, the concepts (especially those related to labor control) that are presented are useful to the managers I work with regardless of their culture or even the continent in which they work.

I recommend the book to all hospitality managers, and I would recommend it to any serious student of hospitality.

Received in about 14 days from the US to Japan. Had a slight delay in shipping but book came well within time period and in perfect condition.

      4 out of 5 stars A starting book.......2007-07-04

If you have been out of accounting for a while or starting from scratch it is a good book to start with. Of course the main focus is of getting an overview for the balanced sheet, income statement and cash flow. For someone who is starting in accounting the section F2 gives an inside for financial interpretation and another good point is a lot of cases and calculation examples are included in this revision. But if you are looking for a more deeper insight than this book will only help you the half way to get their.

      3 out of 5 stars Beware.......2007-06-22

If this book is required for your class beware! There are still questions in the self study questions, through out the book that after 6 editions are still are wrong. The book will say one thing in the chapter and then want you to do another in the chapter questions, without the benifit of telling you how or giving an example. I took my course online without the benifit of an instructor to ask questions face to face. This proved to be difficult. I am sure if you have a GOOD understanding of accounting this is a good book however with out a little background it can be a little trying.

3 out of 5 stars Just an ordinary accounting book.......1999-10-04

The book is overall quite good as an introductory text for accounting, but there are other books out there, equally good, that come a lot cheaper.

        Book Description

This introduction to management accounting and its significant role in making sound business decisions teaches readers how to be wise users, not necessarily preparers of accounting information—a strong user-based approach that is endorsed and supported by the AECC. The authors present accounting information in a broader business context-emphasizing what accounting information is, why it is important, and how it is used to make economic decisions. Specific chapter topics cover classifying costs, determining costs of products, cost behavior, business decisions using cost behavior, making decisions using relevant information, the capital budget: evaluating capital expenditures, the operating budget, standard costing, and evaluating performance. For individuals with a future in management accounting.
