Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for someone seeking new jobs.......2006-04-30

Thanks to this book I got more than 99% on my Professional Writing class. This book isn't just for college students; it is good for anyone who is in the market for new job. It talked about business communication (it's on the title) but that includes oral, written, how to do research paper, how to write proposals, what to expect and dress during an interview, how to write a follow up letter (thank you note), types of cover letters and how to tap into the hidden job market, types of resumes and online job search, e-mailing, types of letters (like fundraising) etc. (the list goes on and on). This is an excellent book for anyone learning about the current job market or what to expect. Ms. Locker is an excellent career coach and the book proves it. I applied to few job postings online (as a test on this book), and got replies from all of them and was called for interviews. I don't know about others but I'm very impressed with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Communication for Dummies.......2005-08-12

This book breaks down every area of communication. It let's you know step by step what is needed. This is a book you will keep referring to for years to come.

1 out of 5 stars Boring!.......2005-07-31

I needed to have this book for class and it is so boring. I can only read a page before I just have to stop because it's just that dull.

4 out of 5 stars Good Communication good business.......2003-06-06

A good primer for a student or review for the experienced manager who wants to hone communications skills. It includes information and exercises on just about every mode and type of communication. I will not give it 4 stars as the web site does not have much worth looking at and the CD is pretty useless as well.

5 out of 5 stars Effective Business Writing Text.......2001-09-13

Kitty Locker's Business and Administrative Communication, 5th ed. is the most considerate educational text I've reviewed for my business writing course. My classes typically include upper level English majors, but it is not uncommon for business majors and ESL students to register too. This student diversity usually presents difficulties because their writing abilities vary tremendously. Thankfully, I found Locker's text. It provides examples of real-life business writing and Internet communication situations highlighted with graphics, sidebars, tables and pictures colorfully presented. This textual consideration, I found, enables students to grasp both the theory and the reality of business communication outside their academic walls.

5 out of 5 stars IT TAKES YOU STRAIGHT TO SCHOOL (wink).......2007-09-19

The book gave me moe information than needed. It talks about the complications in distrubution deals, the unions, music, digaital cameras, and a few other things upcoming producers need to know about the industry before signing into or onto something. I highly recommend it to producers, writers, and directiors. It remind us that the film world is like a whole other business on another planet.

    5 out of 5 stars MUST Have.......2007-05-12

If you wanna get into any sort of video field, or wanna know how the industry functions, and what are the legal and business issues you have to deal with...

...this book is a MUST Have.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for everyone that wants to know the business.......2007-01-19

not only did I get this for myself but I got two other friends their own personal copies (got tired of them borrowing mine). It will keep you out of legal trouble in the film industry and give you insight as to how things are structured.

    5 out of 5 stars More Than a Great Book--It's a Public Service.......2004-06-16

This is more than a great book--it's a public service. The
authors share insights from their decades of legal and
entertainment production experience, in essence offering
thousands of dollars of free legal advice to aspiring
independent producers. Beyond offering a roadmap of business-
planning steps, the book includes templates of numerous legal
forms that an independent producer might need. Meanwhile, in
clear and artful prose, they alternate between You're-Not-God
straight talk and You-Can-Do-It encouragement. Between the
lines, there seems to be a genuine interest in helping
important stories and quality independent work to see the
light of day. I've read other books on the business side of
entertainment that were helpful, but this stands out as the
    best of the lot.

5 out of 5 stars The bible of independent film producer.......2003-08-27

If you are or want to become an independent film producer, this book will give you all of the business/legal knowledge of filmmaking you need. Even though I have not finished the book yet, I've already found this book to be extremely valuable. Because I am planning to produce a new film next year, I even called up Mr. Tulchin directly for legal advice. He was very friendly and took the time to give me great advices and was very knowledgeable in not just U.S. based entertainment law but also international entertainment law as well. Read this book and you will find it worth more than what you paid for!!!

    Book Description

Essential reading for artists, art dealers, and gallery owners, The Artist-Gallery Partnership: A Practical Guide to Consigning Art offers a unique and thorough discussion of consignment that clarifies all aspects of this crucial art world relationship. The book presents a provision-by-provision explanation of the Standard Art Consignment Agreement, a model contract between artist and dealer suitable for use. The contract is flexible, making it ideal for establishing consignment arrangements that are mutually beneficial. It covers agency, consignment, warranties, transportation responsibilities, insurance coverage, pricing, gallery's commission, promotion, return of art, and much more.

The Artist-Gallery Partnership provides artists and dealers with guidelines for sound business negotiations as well as ideas for resolving disputes. The revised edition contains a new chapter on state consignment legislation, and includes a sample of the Standard Art Consignment Agreement, an inventory sheet/receipt for artworks on consignment, and the texts of the art consignment laws enacted in more than thirty states.

5 out of 5 stars Gallerying is not for amateurs.......2007-06-12

I have a small space for a gallery. This book taught me that running the gallery myself was more involved than I had thought. I will leave the operation itself to a lessee. Essential first step for people who think it would be simple fun to open an art gallery.

    3 out of 5 stars A bit too simplistic.......2007-06-08

Whether you are a gallery owner or artist, I suggest finding a book that goes much more in depth. The Artist-Gallery relationship is much more complex and has many nuances not covered. The artist once again gets the short end of the "stick."

5 out of 5 stars Authoritative and Highly Useful.......2006-09-14

This book is regarded by many as the "bible" for artists who consign work to galleries. All the pitfalls and potential problems you can imagine are cited here, along with practical, simple advice for making the most of an artist's relationship with a gallery.

Tad Crawford, who has written extensively on the legal and other business aspects of artist practice, has scored again with this great work.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book of Its Kind!!!.......2003-02-05

I own a small gallery because I love art and artists, but I was not prepared for the variety of business and legal headaches that this field could produce. During yet another frantic call to my attorney, she recommended this book to me and life has been considerably calmer ever since.

Let's face it: art is a business and if you are an artist or a gallery owner, you can't afford to be without this information. I use this book to maintain records; I check paperwork against it before visiting my accountant; I use its sample forms and agreements every time I get the place ready for a new exhibit; and I follow this book's advice with every sale and display we make. This book should be required reading for everyone who has anything to do with art consignment...

    Book Description

Every day in communities across America hundreds of committees, boards, church groups, and social clubs hold meetings where they spend their time engaged in shouting matches and acrimonious debate. Whether they are aware of it or not, the procedures that most such groups rely on to reach decisions were first laid out as Robert's Rules more than 150 years ago by an officer in the U.S. Army's Corps of Engineers. Its arcane rituals of parliamentary procedure and majority rule usually produce a victorious majority and a very dissatisfied minority that expects to raise its concerns, again, at the next possible meeting. Breaking Robert's Rules clearly spells out how any group can work together effectively. After briefly explaining the problems created by Robert's Rules, the guide outlines the five key steps toward consensus building, and addresses the specific problems that often get in the way of a group's progress. Appendices include a basic one page "Handy Guide" that can be distributed at meetings and a case study demonstrating how the ideas presented in the book can also be applied in a corporate context. Written in a non-technical and engaging style, and containing clear ideas and instructions that anyone can understand and use, this one-of-a-kind guide will prove an essential tool for any group desperate to find ways of making their meetings more effective. In addition, neighborhood associations, ad hoc committees, social clubs, and other informal groups lacking a clear hierarchy will find solid advice on how to move forward without resorting to "majority rules" or bickering over who will take leadership positions. Bound to become a classic, Breaking Robert's Rules will change the way you hold meetings forever, paving the way for efficiency, efficacy, and peaceful decision making.

1 out of 5 stars Yet another bad "Anti-Robert's Rules" book.......2007-03-13

The authors of this work have done groups and organizations a grave disservice with this poor 'anti-Robert's Rules' book. It would appear from it that they really don't understand parliamentary procedure (not quite the same thing as Robert's Rules).

We can thank our early European ancestors for parliamentary procedure. They developed it over several hundred years in their town assemblies, and it was later used in the English Parliament (which is were we got the term 'parliamentary procedure'). When the English settled in America, they brought along parliamentary procedure, where it was used in many assemblies, and after independence, in our Congress, state assemblies, etc.

In Gen Henry Robert's time, there were several competing parliamentary authorities. He wrote a good, simple work that codified all this, and it was accepted by many because it was just better. What difference does it make that he was a General? To somehow blame him for the formality of parliamentary procedure because of that is childish.

Furthermore, parlimentary procedure is usable in ALL groups of ANY size to make decisions. In large groups, rules must be more formal, and sometimes addition procedures must be followed to get things done (ex: in large conventions). In small groups, about a dozen or less, you can actually be LESS formal, and despense with some of the normal rules you usually follow. This is set out in Robert's. I wonder if the authors are aware of this?

Consensus is nice, but should not be looked as a panacea. People should education themselves as to what parliamentary procedure REALLY is, and not list to biased authors such as these. Or even people like myself.

    3 out of 5 stars Breaking Robert's Rules.......2007-03-09

This book had valuable content. However, the book's organization was sometimes hard to follow. Also, it kept repeating the same points over and over. This made the book quite boreing.

5 out of 5 stars Not business as usual.......2006-08-24

I've always been perplexed by the fact that we run our meetings according to rules dreamed up by a military engineer more than 100 years ago. Maybe Roberts' arcane procedures about what can be discussed by whom and when worked once upon a time, but they don't make sense either in the modern business world or for making important policy decisions today.

I'm not sure that the consensus building approach spelled out in this book will necessarily work in every case, but it's clear, straightforward, and practical. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has gotten sick of going to meetings only to see the will of the majority frustrated by some shrewed parliamentarian manipulating the rules. Susskind offers a constructive alternative for people who just want to get the right thing done.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for developing effective communication.......2006-08-16

This book has great value whether you are a business owner, politician or public agency staffer, an environmentalist, a facilitator, mediator or any other interested party. It provides a simple, concise and easy-to-understand review of the consensus building process. From a communication perspective, consensus building lends itself towards helping any party in a negotiation develop a greater understanding and wider range of solutions that may be available on any given issue.

The authors frame the limitations of "traditional" Robert's Rules for running public meetings. These traditional methods tend to offer binary decisions (yes or no) which often limit discussion, stifle creativity, and almost always leave someone feeling "left out".

They offer a simple, easy-to-understand and concise method to "break the chains" of communication such that more creative alternatives to issues or problems may be offered and discussed. Through a more creative and contributed process, interested parties can craft decisions based upon informed consensus which lends itself towards more lasting agreements.

The book also offers an excellent treatise on facilitation or mediation techniques. It is useful no matter "what side of the table" you may be in any given issue. A list of Key Terms at the end of each chapter offer an excellent way to reinforce understanding.

Five stars and a great contribution!

Corporate attorney Kenneth Adams presents the first detailed survey of the conventions of language and structure in drafting corporate agreements. Adams pays particular attention to the categories of language that occur in the body of the contract and how best to express them. He proposes alternatives to traditional techniques of drafting that will produce clearer, more efficient contracts. --David Marshall Nissman, J.D.

      Book Description

From a corporate lawyer in private practice comes a detailed analysis of, and guide to, the conventions of language and structure in drafting corporate agreements. Adams summarizes the traditional techniques of drafting and proposes alternatives that produce clearer, more efficient contracts. This comprehensive and pragmatic book includes examples of different usages and explains in detail the reasons for favoring one over another. Citing other authorities on drafting, legal writing, and English usage and grammar generally, as well as case law, Adams creates an authoritative context for his own arguments and advice. An appendix provides "before" and "after" versions of a sample contract identifying inefficient or archaic usages and proposing alternatives. This essential resource examines the parts of a contract and the drafting issues found in each. Adams pays particular attention to the categories of language that occur in the body of the contract and how best to express them. He then addresses more general topics, including use of defined terms and references to time, and discusses various usage that tend to be problematic, such as provisos. Adams also discusses provisions that specify drafting conventions, examines the principles of effective general writing that apply to drafting, and considers aspects of the drafting process. Ideal for anyone who drafts, negotiates, or interprets corporate agreements, this work will find a place in the libraries and on the desks of practicing lawyers and law students alike.

Comprehensive and a terrific resource. The goal is not to use the book instead of legal advice, but it is a terrific starting point.

      4 out of 5 stars Useful Book.......2004-11-28

This book is a handy reference for business and legal users. The text strikes a good balance between being useful as an informational reference and being overly encyclopedic. The forms reflect many good contracting practices. www.ambroziaklaw.com.

        Book Description

A few lawsuits have changed the entire shape of the computer industry as nearly every aspect of computers has come under litigation. These courtroom battles have confused not only computer and legal amateurs, but lawyers, juries, and judges too. The result has been illogical legal opinions, reversals on appeal, and an environment in which the outcome of key legal battles is not only unpredictable but could change the industry's direction yet again. Graham surveys the past and shows how it points to the future. He illustrates how the absence of statutes specifically protecting software has frequently forced courts to simultaneously create and apply the law. Graham covers the whole spectrum of computer hardware and software, addressing the litigation that affected each part of the product chain. In 23 chapters he cuts through the legalese while still offering enough substance to introduce lawyers unfamiliar with intellectual property law to the evolving legal landscape of this dynamic and contentious industry. No prior legal background is required to understand Graham's presentation, however. The result is a comprehensive and fascinating study of this newest of new century industries, and a book that will guide --and caution!-- anyone now in it or who expects to be a part of it tomorrow. Graham shows how the course of litigation in the computer industry has substantially paralleled the growth of the industry itself. Yet, while computer law has been an active field, it is also an unpredictable one. The law governing computers was particularly sketchy prior to 1976, Graham explains, when it was unclear whether programmers had any legal rights to the software they developed. In l976 Congress modified the statutes to specify that software was indeed eligible but unfortunately offered little guidance to the courts on how to apply copyright laws to software. With each lawsuit the courts added to the sketchy foundation of copyright laws, developing the law as they went along. Graham shows that because the courts have so often made the law as they applied it, many computer-related lawsuits had an especially profound impact on the industry. By outlining this history of the development of computer law and its effect on the computer industry, Graham provides a broad outline of the state of computer law today, and a fascinating look at the industry itself.
