A concise yet very informative book for managers interested in running a business 'by the numbers'. It is written in a very practical and easy-to-understand manner. I utilize many of Tracy's ideas in my own job. The book deals not only with budgeting but with management reporting, break-even analysis, project anlysis, and accounting issues in both service and manufacturing enviroments.

If you never had this finance and accounting (F&A) stuff explained to you before, you will like "Business Basics Bestseller 1" as a basic starting point. This is not a suggestion that you substitute it for this book, just that you check it out as well. The BBB #1 book was written by a guy who is not an accountant -- imagine what that can do for cutting through the jargon accountants love without even knowing it.
BBB #1 will introduce you to the basics of business including the terms behind the numbers and where all the formulas come from before you plow into a true "finance and accounting" text. Search for "Business Basics Bestseller 1" and add it to your consideration. It can be one of your best investments. At less than 150 pages, you can zip through it. This is a beginner's book for those wanting to know such provocative things as "Where do income statements come from?" and "Are balance sheets the dirty laundry of accounting?"
Best book on the subject.......2003-01-23
I consistently buy this book to distribute to participants in my company's credit training seminars. I have used the previous edition and this newest edition, both of which are very informative and easy to read. To the author... Great Job!
Filled some gaps for me.......2002-08-04
Though rudimentary, this book filled some gaps for me left by more advanced texts, including some definitions that I was fuzzy on, and enlightened me as to why some things are on financial statements in the form they're in, since I don't have a business education background.
The CD contains the text, which is handy on a laptop, but marred by having the text superimposed on a busy patterned background that has some kind of periodic highlights that are particularly annoying (the current generation of magazine, book and web site designers can't seem to grasp that the point of text is to be read, and that stuff that looks nifty on the computer screen may be darn near impossible to read in print; busy photo backgrounds, light text on dark backgrounds etc. belong ONLY in ads, where no one is expected to read the text anyway.)
Also, the spreadsheets would have been more useful if incorporated in groups into workbooks instead of individual ones. You can't readily get numbers from one to another. And the disk titles are of the "sheet23.xls" variety, not helpful for finding the one you want, so you have to either have the book listing handy or access them strictly from the CD PDF file text.
Being used to technical book web sites that contain errata, new material, suggestions from users, etc., I was disappointed to find nothing new there. And the list of web links, as usual in this fast-changing world, contains a number of missing links. I would have appreciated a good old fashioned bibliography in addition to the links, because you can usually find out of print books through a library, used dealers on the web, and most really important books and texts have current editions.

I am the author. I would like to point out that the reviews that appear here, which are dated prior to May 2002, are for the previous edition. In this new Third Edition, I have worked hard to take this top-selling, clearly written book, and add content in many areas to provide more depth to the book. There are six new chapters covering tax concepts, capital structure, business plans, working capital and banking relationshsips, accountability and control, and personal finances. In addition many other chapters have been siginficantly modified and or supplemented with new information. I hope you enjoy my book.

A Bit Too Theoretical.......2002-09-24
This is not a bad book. It covers a lot of ground. But at times it gets a bit too theoretical, rather than being down to earth. I saw the reviews that liked it, but several of them were by financial managers. For those of us who are not financial managers, there is quite of a bit of mathematics and theory. For example, for capital budgeting there is a whole chapter of mathematical formulas with a small paragraph saying no one really uses the formulas - they use calculators or computers. But there was no discussion about what calculator or computer program to buy or how to do the calculations with a calculator or computer. The book is also pretty much out of date, espeically in areas like the tax chapter.
Easy to read and understand for the non-technical person.......2001-12-16
This book does a great job of helping managers understand the financial world. It takes the basics of finance and accounting and describes them in a very non-technical and easy to understand manner. I am a degreed accountant with a strong finance and economics background and find it difficult to explain things to business owners and managers in a way that makes sense to them. This book resolves that problem. By the time they read through it once we can at least talk together and I don't feel like I am using a foreign language.
A very valuable book that should be required reading for anyone who goes into business for theirself or moves up the corporate ladder to a position where understanding these things is beneficial for their career. While it is not a treatise on the details of accounting and finance it will give you a broad enough scope to understand what you should be doing and why things work the way that they do. A recommended read.
Great book when paired with another one........2001-06-15
This is a very readable book about business finance and accounting. I have used it, along with a study guide I prepared for it, to help train people who were becoming instructors for business training classes. It certainly helps to be able to discuss the material in the book with someone who knows more about what's in it than you do. Even so, Droms does a good job with his material and you can use the book for later reference -- I do. You'll get even more out of this book if you order another book to go with it. Professor Droms has re-edited his well known book: FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING FOR NONFINANCIAL MANAGERS. I, for one, am very glad to see that it continues in print and available.
This book provides remarkable insights into why things financial are the way that they are. His examples are clear and understandable. His explanations are coherent and make sense.
Perhaps, the only critique I can make for this useful and easier to follow book, is that it is too short.

This book gives a good basic overview of the health care finance. Its best feature is that it is applied to health care only, so you don't have to go through other business models. I cannot see using it in the future though - if you are planning to manage your office/work on a budget/evaluate your organization from a financial stand point, this is not the book you will need.

One of the best F&A books written for general managers I have read. Detailed enough to give the reader an excellent grasp of the subject, but doesn't require calculus to understand. If you're a manager who cringes during discussions of cash flow, cost of capital, and discount rates, this book is for you. Can't wait for other titles in the series!
