Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars OK for tech exams - but there are some errors in it .......2007-09-30

Good book I bought to catch up on some of the questions you always get, when you have oral exams, and want to explain something difficult in a simple way - this book does the trick.
But, lookout for the errors - not all of the information is totally correct - when you simplify things, often the knowledge gets so compressed, that errors are bound to occur.

5 out of 5 stars Really GOOD.......2007-08-16

3 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-01-17

If you want to pass your interview in one of those big major airlines, this book is for you.
As a reference book to mantain you in shape it's Ok too.

4 out of 5 stars All pilots must have !.......2007-01-12

All pilots must have such a book like this one. Although it's main purpose is to help in Job's interviews it's also a very good tool to review many topics we don't use to view since our private and comercial pilot's classes. I just would like to see more illustrations and it needs a few corrections too.

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected !!!.......2006-11-07

Marvellous edition with tons of technical questions nicely ordered by topic. A must have for every (commercial or private) pilot even for people not looking to go on interview straight-away, but just want to brush up their knowledge.

3 remarks:
- I have to agree with the previous reviews on the fact that there are plenty of errors, the least the author/publisher could do, is build a list with errata.
- some more illustrations would have been nice - but it is no reason for not buying this book
- pitty there's no CD with a quiz of the covered questions, but then again: it's a book (not software).

        Book Description

The third edition of this bestselling resource provides clear, step-by-step guidance for new and experienced interviewers to help them develop, shape, and reflect on interviewing as a qualitative research process. While proposing a phenomenological approach to in-depth interviewing, the author also includes principles and methods that can be adapted to a range of interviewing approaches. Using concrete examples of interviewing techniques to illustrate the issues under discussion, this classic text helps readers to understand the complexities of interviewing and its connections to broader issues of qualitative research.

Equally popular for individual and classroom use, the new Third Edition of Interviewing as Qualitative Research features:

        * An introduction to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process in its historical context, including an expanded discussion of informed consent and its complexities.
        * Special attention to the rights of participants in interview research as those rights interact with ethical issues.
        * Updated references and suggestions for additional reading for a deeper consideration of methodological, ethical, and philosophical issues, including relevant Internet resources.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars qualitative research .......2007-05-29

very informative, has alot of tips. A phenomenological approach to in-depth interviewing.

5 out of 5 stars Seidman is the Grand Master of Interviewing as QR.......2006-08-30

I was fortunate to take Irv's class at UMass. His book is the most comprehensive guide to interviewing, and I have used his method in my doctoral thesis and in multiple academic papers. Irv probably has exploitation issues with his method being used to collect consumer data, but the three-stage interview method is extremely effective in exploring consumption experiences.

        5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2006-02-22

For the novice interviewer, this is a very informative book. It is clear and precise and gives a decent history of interviewing and the ethics that go with the territory. Just remember that this is only one interviewing book. The author describes his method used at his university and acknowledges other methods. Over all very good. It helped me a great deal for my masters work.

        3 out of 5 stars Solid Book.......2005-07-29

This book does a very nice job of outlining the interview process as well as all of the issues around informed consent. The book also is excellent with the whole issue of developing a profile for the person being interviewed. This was probably one of the finer elements of Seidman's effort.

I was disappointed with one thing. The reason I bought the book was that I was interested in reading more ideas on how to coalesce a number of interviews into a coherent whole. This was a weak area of the "Interviewing as Qualitative Research..." It was certainly addressed but Seidman's points related to this topic were not helpful. The book would, however, probably be helpful to someone that is just beginning to use interviews.

Overall, it is a good book. It was just weak in the main area where I was hoping to pick up some new ways to approach the data.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, Informative, Organized.......2002-06-14

Qualititative research is far more than asking a prescribed list of questions. However, the interview is key and core to learning what the researcher wants to know.

"Interviewing as Qualitative Research" by Irving Seidman is a concise but informative book explaining the whole process clearly. In fact, the strength of the book is not so much the content -- other books say the same things -- but the presentation. Seidman planned the book well, and subjected it to careful editing and organization.

Despite its short length, it is well-outlined, with a complete contents area, index, and eight-page reference section.

Chapters include (each has several subsections listed below):
        * Why Interview?
        * A Structure For In-Depth Phenomonologicsl Interviewing
        * Proposing Research: From Mind To Paper To Action
        * Establishing Access To, Making Contact With, And Selecting Participants
        * Affirming Informed Consent
        * Technique Isn't Everything, But It Is A Lot
        * Interviewing As A Relationship
        * Analyzing, Interpreting, And Sharing Interview Material

I fully recommend "Interviewing as Qualitative Research" by Irving Seidman.

5 out of 5 stars SAP MM Interview Questions.......2006-08-15

Interview Questions, Answers, and Explanations books
help SAP professions understand what information is essential,
and what can safely be ignored.

If you are a SAP consultant or contractor looking for a job,
you have many competing interests for your time - this series
of interview books helps you focus your study time. These books
are a learning tool which will help direct your learning - not
act as a replacement for your learning.

As you will probably see - these books do not come without
controversy - some people would rather the publisher stop
printing these books - but these are the people that think
their SAP knowlege is some sort of proprietary holding, and
that they are smarter than people who don't have this knowledge.

This series of books levels the playing field. The books
tell you what you need to know, and what you can safely ignore.

This book has led to many jobs landed, and new careers made.

        1 out of 5 stars Don't bluff your way into a job.......2006-07-29

I have an issue with the whole idea of buying a book just to get through an interview. I find it rather distasteful. I looked at this book as someone at work had it and I was disappointed at the content. I guess if it was the only book out there on MM then it would be be worth buying, but there are much better books out there if you actually want to know about the subject matter.

        5 out of 5 stars Interview Books.......2006-07-27

First, and frankly the most important thing to understand about interview questions books is that they help you save time. These books help you understand what deserves your attention and further reading, and what does not. These books help you understand what you need to learn, and what you can safely ignore. As an SAP consultant you can spend several hours each week, if not every day, learning about SAP. It is a major part of being an SAP person (especially a good one), and anything that you can do to reduce the amount of time you spend simply learning is very valuable to you. When you're spending time reading and not billing at a client, it can cost you about $100 each hour. That's expensive reading time! And so why would you even think twice about the cost of a $50 book if you think it will help you learn something valuable that you can apply at your job.

Second, the SAP market is evolving. It is evolving in ways that demand SAP people understand more about the product we are working with - It's not uncommon to see requests for an "MM and SD" functional consultant these days. Also, in my consulting practice, I am focusing on SRM - but each day I am called upon to talk about MM, PP, PS, and other areas in SAP. I think that clients are less and less willing to hear, "Well that's a FICO issue - or that's an MM issue."

Finally, I use these books myself. Each time I'm asked a question that stumps me, and this happens all of the time (despite what my clients may think), I turn to my own books as a reference. A couple of weeks ago someone asked me a question about a work order in PM. As an SRM consultant, I had little exposure to work orders. So I grabbed my PM Interview Questions book, looked up work orders in the index, and the EXACT question someone asked me was answered in the PM book. So the SAP Interview Questions, Answers, and Explanations series of books help save SAP people time because they show you what is important to learn, and I believe they help greatly in cross training - and so that's what these books are all about. They will save you time, and give you more knowledge about the SAP product. And the only group of people that don't want that to happen are consultants who want to keep their skills a secret!

1 out of 5 stars This book is a Joke!.......2006-07-03

Unless you know absolutely nothing about SAP MM, you will find
this book absolutely ludicrous. I was apalled that someone had
the audacity to put together a collection of basic question-answers and charge $55 for this !

Unless you are really desperate and lazy to browse through some
of the SAP help, some popular usergroup SAP sites, you should not buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars move from technical to functional.......2006-06-12

I have been programming in ABAP for several years and have experience in SAP. I was interested in learning MM, and learning so that I can get a job as a fucntional consultant. This book helped me learn what areas of SAP MM I should study, rather than reading the entire book. This book will help you realize what is important, and what is not important. It will help you understand what to learn. That is the key to this book.
Once you read this, you will know where else to turn for further study. This is not a cook book, but is a study guide that helped me get a job.

        Book Description

Succeeding at Your Interview: A Practical Guide for Teachers uses an effective interactive format to present core information about interviewing for a teaching job, document a wide variety of interview processes, guide teacher candidates in developing strategies for interviewing, and increase their confidence in communicating their professional knowledge. In a spiral process, readers are asked to consider scenarios, respond to questions, contemplate the perspective offered by the authors, and modify their responses. The goal is to help teacher candidates develop and articulate a clear idea of their own professional knowledge and of the culture of the schools at which they are interviewing.

        Special features:
*Eleven detailed chapters and five interview scenarios engage the reader in continuous reflective practice in the multifaceted activities integral to interviewing--beginning with organizing the job search and proceeding through the entire interview process.
*The scenarios implicitly develop knowledge and the chapters explicitly detail the information.
*Specific interview situations engage readers in articulating their professional knowledge, linking theory and practice.
*"Keep in Mind" comments, Margin Notes, and Decision Trees provide opportunities to reflect on the issues and develop personal responses.
*Sample documents, formats, questions, and responses enhance understanding of evaluation processes.
*Graphic organizers at the beginning and end of each chapter provide visual representations of the concepts and concerns addressed in each chapter, assisting the reader in identifying chapters relevant to their current needs in the job search and in synthesizing, organizing, and reviewing the information contained in the chapter.

Beyond a "Must-Read"--this is a "Must-Do" personal coaching workbook. As a counselor in educational placement, I develop interview tip sheets, classroom seminars and conduct mock interviews for student teachers. This book does more. It walks you through sample interviews and shows you how to "work the questions." The authors clarify the interview process for inexperienced candidates, and provide the tools for anyone (even other-than-teacher job seekers) to interview with confidence and professionalism.

        5 out of 5 stars Valuable Tool.......2002-06-21

"Succeeding at your interview" is a good resource for anyone entering the field of education. This book gives the reader a step by step guide for achieving a teaching position in the school of his or her choice. Expert guidance is provided on preparing an application, presenting yourself as a professional, and evaluating an interviewer's questions. In addition, the scenario sessions are an excellent tool to avoid being caught unprepared for an interview question. I plan on recommending this book to all of the teachers I know. This would be a great gift for a recent college graduate, or a seasoned professional who is changing career paths.

I have taught in a suburban New York school system for 35 years and have served on many interviewing teams. Review of questioning techniques and the interview scenarios can be a great help to teachers and administrators on these teams. But it is especially valuable to the prospective teacher who after reading and studying "Succeeding at Your Interview" will be prepared to face any setting or question posed at an interview. This ability means SUCCESS!

The prospective teacher will gain confidence by becoming familiar with the variety of interview formats. The 5 scenarios are-
        1. An Initial School Based One to One Interview
        2. An Initial Interview with a School Based Team
        3. A District Based Interview with Several Principals
        4. A School Based Interview with Role Playing
        5. A School Based Interview with a Demonstration Lesson

Becoming familiar with the varied possibilities can prevent being caught off guard and will present a secure, confident candidate.
The reader is exposed to interviewers' questions and techniques in evaluating them. There are 7 issues that are usually discussed in interviews. These issues are reviewed with practice exercises. The questions covered are on the topics of-
        1. Yourself
        2. Learning Principles
        3. Supporting Learning
        4. Impressions of Teaching
        5. Classroom Lessons
        6. Personal Approaches
        7. Your Questions

This book also provides guidance with gathering information about potential teaching positions, organizing the application process and suggested readings.

"Succeeding at Your Interview" is a most valuable tool for the prospective and experienced teacher before interviewing for a position as well as for the teacher on the team involved in the interviewing process. Get this book for success!

          Book Description

Interviewing skills are not simple motor skills. Rather, they involve a high-order combination of observation, empathic sensitivity, and intellectual judgment. This guidebook, now available from Waveland Press, provides a process model and a corresponding set of classroom-tested exercises designed to improve basic interviewing skills. The model--called the Skill Learning Cycle--provides an initial, guided experience for the complete interview-learning process, including planning, doing, and analyzing phases. It also stands as a model for the learner to use in the future for continued growth in interviewing skills. In order to focus on the most basic interviewing skills, only the information-gathering function, which is common to all interviews, is discussed.

Hiring Great People provides an excellent, common sense approach to handling some of today's more challenging staffing issues. From recruiting to orientation and everything in between, hiring managers can depend on the sound advice presented by Klinvex, Klinvex and O'Connell.

          4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-03-21

Kevin C. Klinvex, Matthew S. O'Connell, and Christopher P. Klinvex present a guide to creating a more effective hiring process. They cover each step, from defining the job to hiring the best person. The book provides techniques for attracting the right employees through advertising and promotion. It also covers effective use of applications, interviews, testing, and background checks. This book is clear, well-organized, and easy-to-read. While some of the suggestions may be obvious to those who are experienced at hiring, they are presented in a careful, step-by-step way. We at getAbstract recommend this book to those involved in the hiring process in larger companies, from company owners and top managers to human resource professionals. Small business owners who wish to use more sophisticated hiring techniques may also find it useful.

5 out of 5 stars Professional Must Have.......2001-02-06

Whether in your briefcase or on the bookshelf, this is a must have for the human resources professional or for any professional involved in selection and hiring. This book is really appropriate for any audience. I have used it as a textbook with my graduate personnel selection classes.

Hiring Great People is a well-written, easy to read book. At the same time, it presents highly technical information in a format which demonstrates how such information can be turned into practice. There are may useful hints, guidelines and forms in the book. As I have indicated above, I have used this book as a text in graduate courses. It is more valuable than books which cost five times as much.

This is not a book about fluff or fads -- it deals with the latest research and technology in the practice of personnel selection in a highly readable fashion. I find myself turning to it repeatedly for advice on topics such as interviewing and competency assessment.

          5 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Thorough!.......2000-06-18

Not another book on hiring! Enough! Can any more be said that hasn't been said already? Can the same information be presented any better than it has before?

I'll admit that I opened this book, part of McGraw-Hill's Briefcase series, with a bias to dismiss the publication as just another also-ran. Surprise! Hiring Great People caught my attention right away and held it for most of the book. Starting with the three-page detailed table of contents, the book was easy to read and easy to use. A Manager's Checklist at the end of each chapter offers a good summary for reality-checking and later reference.

I liked the way each chapter begins with a scenario, usually including dialog, that catches the reader's attention and focuses on the problem to be solved by the chapter's content. Nicely done. An abundance of examples aid in understanding of the authors' points and in the practical application of the knowledge presented. A common feature of the Briefcase books is effective use of icons to call out sidebars and boxes that highlight and amplify the text. The boxes are categorized as Smart Managing (tactics), Caution (warnings), Tricks of the Trade, Key Terms (jargon explained), Examples, Tools (proven procedures), and Mistake Proofing (how to minimize the risk of a bad hire).

The book begins with an emphasis on competency-based job descriptions. Helpful information includes definitions of competencies and advice on conducting a competency analysis. The second chapter jumps right in with the legal stuff that employers must be wary of today. A number of pertinent laws are carefully explained so the reader knows what to do and how to avoid costly mistakes. The chapter on attracting the right employees (note: not just warm bodies) addresses recruiting as well as what today's workers are looking for. The table on page 47 provides information on over a dozen internet sites that can be used for recruiting.

So now we have all these applications coming in. What should we do with them? Chapter 4 shows us how to use those applications as screening tools in our efforts to find the right people to bring in for interviews. Chapter 5 does the same thing with resumes. Frankly, I was astonished at the volume of advice; I learned about tools and procedures that opened my eyes about my own hiring. The next two chapters on interviewing was equally valuable; again, I gained knowledge that I didn't have before. Just when you think you know it all, this kind of book comes along to remind you and give you some more.

Do these applicants really care about working here, or are they just looking for a job? Chapter 8 shows us how to evaluate how motivated that applicant is to perform. The interviewing approaches are most useful, as are the charts and score sheets to help the interviewer focus on what's most important. Testing and background checks were discussed next-good sequencing of chapters. I thought the chapter on testing got a bit too deep in testing methodology for a book like this, but the information is interesting.

The chapter on making the hiring decisions and notifying applicants includes a weighting system that helps put appropriate emphasis on the most important characteristics. I liked the advice about sending polite rejection letters promptly. There are so many applicants that wait a long time-nervously and needlessly. Chapter 12 advises wise ways to bring new employees on board with the right kind of offer of employment and the subsequent orientation process. The final chapter on blended workforces highlighted the alternatives that employers have today, using part-timers, job-share, and contingent workers to get the job done.
