Book Description
Accounting is about decision making using financial information. The focus of this text is on developing within students the ability to critically analyze accounting information and make informed business decisions. Students are exposed to a lot of real-world examples where they can see the effect that accounting information has on the decisions made by real companies. Also chapters are split into basic and expanded material so that the professor can easily cover the basics of a topic or, if he or she prefers, delve deeper into a selected topic. Finally, analysis is incorporated throughout the text so that students can learn to use accounting information as they learn how that information is prepared.

For people who don't know any thing about accounting (like me) this the book for you. it starts with the basic concept then explane the more diffecult one in the rest of the book.
eventhough I didn't study all the book however what I have taken was great
Great Book.......2007-05-06
This is the best introductory accounting book I've ever seen. I've been fortunate to attend the university where the authors teach, and have studied accounting under both Stice and Swain. The book is very clear, without the instructor's explanation (and the instructors are funny as heck and absolutely know the material) and I recommend it to anyone.

Customer Reviews:
One of the Best AIS Texts.......2003-03-29
I have used the fourth edition of this book, and it's one of the best AIS text books I have seen. It's concise, to the point, and informative. The fourth edition of this book gets the point across without being longwinded. Supplementary materials are included on a CD and can be accessed if needed or to supplement the text material. The problems are extremely useful. I highly recommend this text for use in accounting information systems classes.
An overkill textbook.......1999-05-12
As a textbook for an accounting systems class, this text is extremely cumbersome and long-winded. The authors seem to want to beat every subject to death, which results in excrutiatingly long chapters. Much of the material may be relevant to information systems majors taking it in a series of two classes, but is probably not suitable for an accounting major class. The writing style is boring and cryptic in many places. Look into the Gelinas/Sutton/Oram or Bodnar/Hopwood books for much better content and readability.
This is a university text book, not a reference book.......1997-11-10
I was looking for specialized information and I failed to understand that "Essential Concepts and Applications" meant just what it said: this is a university text book for students, and in this quality it certainly rates a high grade, (although I am not qualified to say if it rates $ 311), but as a reference book for professional in the field, it is useless: half of the book introduces essentials of computer technology, the other half essentials of accounting, but none in depth. I will be more careful in the future and can only lament the loss. However, as a study text book, it is probably very good.

Book Description
This book, the first of its kind, presents a new Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for the Indian economy for the year 1997-98. It provides detailed and consistent information on production for 60 sectors, and on income distribution for six categories of occupational households, separately for rural and urban areas. Using fresh figures from India’s Central Statistical Organisation, the authors also present the SAM for 2002-03. In addition, this book goes into details of the concepts, methodology and limitations of the construction of SAM.
The book is divided into three parts:
Part I deals with the input-output (I-O) model, which forms an important component of SAM. It discusses the basic analytical structure of the I-O matrix and reviews landmark applications of this model for various developing countries.
Part II evaluates the analytical dimensions of SAM and associated SAM multipliers, and reviews important and innovative applications of the SAM model, again for a variety of economies.
Part III discusses the problems encountered while constructing a SAM. It provides satellite accounts for the sectorwise distribution of employment by education levels, sex, and status for both rural and urban areas.

Book Description
Updating the book since its last publication in 1985, this new edition of the landmark work on human resource accounting has been substantially revised to reflect the current state of the field through the late 1990s. The economies of many nations are increasingly dominated by knowledge- or information-based sectors driven by highly trained and specialized personnel. Whereas physical capital was of the utmost economic importance in the past, the distinctive feature of the emerging post-industrial economies is an increasing reliance on human and intellectual capital. The growing importance of human capital as a determinant of economic success at both the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels dictates that firms need to adjust to this new economic reality. Specifically, if human capital is a key determinant for organizational success, then investment in the training and development of employees to improve performance is a critical component of this success.
This broad socioeconomic shift underscores a growing need for measuring and analyzing human capital when making managerial and financial decisions. Yet important human resource decisions involving hiring, training, compensation, productivity and other matters are often made in the absence of specific information about the different costs and benefits of these particular choices. Human resource accounting is a managerial tool that can be used to gain this valuable information by measuring the costs of recruiting, hiring, compensating and training employees. It can be used to evaluate employee training programs, increase productivity, and improve managerial decision-making regarding promotions, transfers, layoffs, replacement and turnover. Case studies illustrate, for example:
- How an insurance company evaluated a training program for claims adjusters and found that it would return two dollars for every one dollar spent.
- How a human resources accounting study revealed that an electronics firm's losses from employee turnover equalled one year's new income, and how the company initiated a program to reduce turnovers.
The third edition presents the current state of the art of human resource accounting by (1) examining the concepts and methods of accounting for people as human resources; (2) explaining the present and potential uses of human resource accounting for human resource managers, line managers and investors; (3) describing the research, experiments and applications of human resource accounting in organizations; (4) considering the steps involved in developing a human resource accounting system; and (5) discussing some of the remaining aspects of human resource accounting that require further research.

excellent intro book! and a great read too ;)
management accouting for steve albrecht, et al.......2003-02-09
this text hasn't included solutions manual that's big trouble for student
Missing major material.......2003-01-22
This book was required for my accounting class. It seems the have the holes of Swiss cheese though. While it probably covers the basics of Financial Accounting as well as any other book, it lacks some things that I thought would be entirely useful. For example only the odd exercises have the solutions in the back. Maybe it's just me, but I expect all since I'm in college. Furthermore, despite the copyright date of 2002, this edition contains a lot of old material. It lists Market Capitalization information about Microsoft from the spring and summer of 2000, the peak in stock prices. Also in the first chapter it speaks of accounting ethics and references a speech made in 1998 by the chairman of the SEC. It makes no mention to the scandals of Enron, WorldCom etc. (Enron declared bankruptcy on Dec. 2, 2001.) This edition appears to be just a desire by the authors to put out a new edition to limit the used book trade of the 7th edition and make more money for the authors.
If you can avoid it, do not buy this edition new.
