5 out of 5 stars The very best pricing manual.......2007-09-23

I bought a second copy of this book after loaning it to too many people to know who had had it last.

The book is not light reading, is highly technical and has more than a little math to comprehend. But, it is worth it.

The strategic thinking is very focused.

If you are stuck on how to price your product or how to combat price competition, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for guidance/framework on how to price our products ..........2007-03-08

We have the challenge of taking new products and services to the marketplace and really were looking form some guidance on a place to start. The area we are working in is really developing a new market as well. So we were wondering "What Price do we place on these product and services?"

We could not afford the experts on pricing (aka Strategic Pricing Group now part of The Monitor Group). And were looking for a place to start. All research including reviews from Amazon pointed us to start with this book. To myself and our endeavor, it the first 3 weeks of owning the book, I have read several chapters multiple times and the foundation framework on pricing is shares has already proven to be worth many times the price of the book.

On top of it, it is easy to read. Thanks to the people who took the time to make this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-02-18

This book is a great guide to the topic of pricing. I'm an MBA student and I believe students as well as professionals can benefit from reading this book. It contains structures and frameworks to work out a tailored pricing strategy and they all make sense. Lots of good examples from business practice illustrate the application of the theories.
The book is relatively quantitative for a marketing book, which I find great because there is no argumentation based on psychology and belief, but on quantifiable parameters - one can see the consulting practice of the authors.
What the book pretty much lacks is a citing of new academic research studies of the topics discussed. There are extensive references, however.
All in all a great book to newcomers in pricing as well as experienced pricers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant........2007-02-11

This is one of the best books in pricing. My Pricing professor recommended that I buy this and said that marketing managers regularly refer to this book in practice. This is a great buy.

Book Description

Business guru Verne Harnish's firm Gazelles has brought hundreds of businesses to fast-growth profitability. Now he shares entrepreneurial secrets in this must-read business primer. Harnish has discovered John D. Rockefeller's underlying strategy. Further study uncovered three winning habits:

*Priorities: A few rules remain consistent with a firm's core values and long-term goal. Others change regularly -- what Harnish calls the Top 5 and Top 1 of 5.

*Data: Key metrics should be measured over time (Smart Numbers); short-term metrics provide a tighter focus on an aspect of the business (Critical Numbers).

*Rhythm: A well-organized set of meetings keep everyone aligned and accountable.

In addition to case studies, a bonus chapter co-authored by Rich Russakoff reveals winning tactics to get banks in competition to finance your business venture. MASTERING THE ROCKEFELLER HABITS provides necessary tools for making strategically smart decisions and for keeping everyone aligned and accountable to those decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, easy methods to grow your business.......2007-09-24

I have read many business books over my career as an entrepreneur having founded two successful companies. Mastering the Rockefeller habits is the simplest best book I have ever read on growing and managing a small to medium business. Verne has a great gift of providing just the simple nuggets that you need to know without all of the other stuff. An addition to Verne's book that I have found enormous value in is defining the values in more detail as outlined in Gregg Lederman's book Achieve Brand Integrity: Ten Truths You Must Know to Enhance Employee Performance and Increase Company Profits. He calls these brand concepts and outlines a great approach to defining the beliefs and behaviors that will make these brand concepts come alive. Between these two books you have an amazing view of how to build a successful company.

5 out of 5 stars John.......2007-07-30

If you want to make the critical move from planning to executing this book is a MUST read!!

5 out of 5 stars The habits that will make your business a predictable enterprise for growth.......2007-07-08

This is an important resource for salespeople, managers, entrepreneurs and executives alike. Verne Harnish does a great job in breaking down the habits of Mr. Rockefeller, who is as close to a model of business excellence as you can find.

Harnish goes over all the business basics, such as setting priorities, analyzing data and creating the right rhythm for the business. One of my favorite lines from this book is: "Until your people are mocking you, you've not repeated your message enough". This statement is true when it comes to the values, objectives and the methods of implementation of the company.

The message of this book, if practiced, will make your business a predictable enterprise for growth. The book has so many good points that I stopped highlighting after the first chapter, lest I highlight the entire book. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!.......2007-02-27

I read this a few times because it was just
that good. I'd recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Helps Entrepreneurs Focus.......2007-01-31

Having assessed/coached over 6,000 executives, I've heard many accounts of how difficult it is for entrepreneurs, with a lot of great ideas, to focus their efforts. Mastering the Rockefeller Habits is the perfect manual for breaking down all the components of a business, sorting through priorities, and then putting together simple plans to execute.

Harnish interacts with entrepreneurs all the time, and he creates venues so that entrepreneirs can learn from each other. He is an astute observer of what works, and he does a great job in this book of sharing the best practices and wisdom of people who have become successful.

In What Clients Love, marketing maven Harry Beckwith offers valuable lessons about capturing and keeping clients. (As Beckwith puts it, "Competence gets firms into the game that relationships win.") Using snappy examples from Absolut Vodka, Kinko's, Starbucks, and Ian Schrager's boutique hotels, he organizes his advice by describing four significant social trends that shape client needs and loyalty. Beckwith's strategies for coping with information overload focus on getting to the point--using a shorter sell and fewer superlatives. He makes a clever and convincing case for giving both testimonials and blurbs the death penalty. He details the decline of client trust with a plan to eliminate cold calls, dress for success, and a spot-on critique of PowerPoint ("Lincoln had no slides at Gettysburg.") Other chapters explore the limits of the Internet and offer nongimmicky ideas about creating a brand, including 20 questions for choosing a name for your business.

Beckwith's advice is fresh, funny, and strategic. He is a master of anecdote and metaphor whose examples range from television's Sex and the City to nihilistic philosopher Nietzsche. Yet the book's clarity is sometimes undermined by its too clever formatting. It's best to enjoy its wisdom one chapter at a time, over coffee. Consider it the caffeine in your cup. --Barbara Mackoff

In WHAT CLIENTS LOVE, Harry Beckwith once again discusses effective business tactics with the practical, down-to-earth style that has made him a bestselling author and trusted marketing expert.Beckwith explains the sheer simplicity of a marketing plan-how to find your company's position, how to define a brand, and how to manage that brand so it has its full and overwhelming impact. With sections such as "Thinking and Planning," "Communicating," and "Serving the Client," Beckwith shows how effective marketers need to be brief, succinct and "cut to the close." WHAT CLIENTS LOVE also reveals the very nature of a service-and why the phrase "pushing the product" itself begins to suggest why this more aggressive approach fails, since you cannot ""push" a relationship, as people know from their failed attempts to do so in non-business relationships.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2007-06-04

This is the most insightful and analytical book about business I have ever read. You don't need to be an MBA to understand and benefit from the well-thought-out and plainly presented message. Anyone who sells goods or services to the public will benefit greatly from this cogent take on the nuts and bolts behind pleasing clients.

5 out of 5 stars A real joy on multiple levels.......2007-04-26

I first read this book shortly after it was published. I just finished my third reading. Each time it gets better.

The book follows the typical Beckwith format. Short, one or two page lessons. You can jump in anywhere in the book ... read for very short periods of time or read for long pleasurable periods. It is well written and contains some of the most succinct lessons on branding, marketing, selling, client attraction and retention that you will find anywhere.

It is not a book to be read once and put on the shelf. You will gain the most value if you revisit it periodically. The lessons are so short and to the point, there is no way you could retain all the information in one reading. You need repeated exposure to the information in this book.

Some of the more valuable lessons are:

A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention. The more there is to hear, the less we listen.

We are drowning in information and screaming for knowledge.

Growing complexity makes us covet the simple.

Say little - a simple point penetrates.

Clarity is expertise.

We are generally more persuaded by the reasons we discover ourselves than those given to us.

Four rules for choosing clients.
Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it will be. Bad clients don't produce minimal results, they produce losses. If a prospect is more interested in cost, you will never be happy and always be vulnerable. You cannot cut a bad deal with a good person or a good deal with a bad person.

Throughout the book, Beckwith cites many books that are well worth reading. At the end of the book is a great appendix that in itself is worth the price of the book.

Well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful.......2007-01-18

I'm new to sales, so I'm no expert; but this book seemed perfect. I've listened to it twice and intend to do so a few more times. It's all about putting yourself in your client's place and acting with passion based on belief and purpose. There are also lots of good practical suggestions from how to dress to naming your business.

4 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Money.......2006-12-04

As with most of my reviews, I try to balance the content being provided with the money being invested. This book is a good investment. Lot's of great ideas on how to deal with your customers. Includes good ideas on structuring and operating your business so people will want to be your customers. It also scrutinizes and criticizes many cherished concepts about marketing and tells why these concepts are no longer working. If you are a business owner, manager, or employee, you need to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Every sales person should read this book.......2006-08-15

Another great book by Harry Beckwith. Three of my favorite pages: "What the best salespeople sell (in order)" and "What ordinary sales people sell (in order)" and "Why hard selling has gotten harder." This is an easy-to-read book with short chapters. A great writing style.

Book Description

“If life were fair, employees would be perfect. They would do exactly what we asked them to do, exactly when we asked them to do it - except, of course, for the fantastic ideas they would cook up on their own…Back to reality. Your employees are, like you and me, flawed and hopeful human beings whose success is at least partly dependent on your skill as a manager, human beings who will thrive with skillful and consistent attention and wither without it.”

In business today we're told that management development is a thing of the past. Staying limber, preparing to change hats at a moment's notice, and keeping your finger on the pulse of the “new” - that's what we're told is critical.

At this moment when companies and managers aren't focusing on the long haul, Erika Andersen says just the opposite. If you want to compete with the market leaders, grow your business, and succeed in your field, you need support: an all-star staff that epitomizes your company's mission and has the skills to implement it.

How do you achieve this? Grow great employees.

For twenty-five years Erika Andersen has been helping some of the best-managed companies in the world develop their employees. In Growing Great Employees you'll learn how they stay ahead of the competition by investing in their people. You'll discover that:
• Listening is your most powerful asset. Use it to motivate and build commitment.
• Everything you know about interviewing is wrong. Find out how to discover what you really need in a potential employee and how to find it.
• Successful companies hire for keeps. Get people feeling like part of the team from day one.
• Great leaders surround themselves with the best. Recognize who has potential and develop them into tomorrow's leaders.

Whether you're a manager or a senior executive, Growing Great Employees is your guide to creating a dynamic workplace where the efforts you make with your employees today will blossom into success for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring resource! .......2007-09-16

Tending the garden is metaphor and departure point for this brilliantly clear, wise and pragmatic book. If you aspire to be an effective leader, if you strive to achieve the potentiality of those who work with you or for you - whether you are a human resources professional, a CEO or newly minted supervisor - Erika Andersen's insights, tools and exercises will deepen your skills, give you fresh insights, and reinvigorate you.

GROWING GREAT EMPLOYEES reminds me that one's humanity plays a big role in becoming an influential leader. The importance of being a good listener, a mentor, being bold, honest, responsible and accessible to those around you are welcomed reminders in this era of myopic functionality, quarterly returns, and corporate liability.

Beyond trend, GGE will be a `perennially' relevant resource for the business community.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful advice.......2007-05-07

In the author's own words, he goes to conferences and what-not, hoping to find just 1% of the material that helps him succeed - those hidden gems of knowledge. Is everything he talks about going to be 100% applicable and timely for you? No, but there's certainly enough "gems" in the book to steer you in the right direction. The discussions on delivering value as opposed to time are priceless.

3 out of 5 stars Decent..........2007-04-06

Honestly, I was not terribly impressed with this book. After the first couple chapters, I nearly quit reading it. Part 1 of the book (the first 5 chapters) is written in such abstract terms that it was completely worthless to me. For instance, in a section on goal-setting he quotes the following as one of the best goals he has heard from a consultant, "We will undertake consulting assignments that result in direct contribution to the client's profitability as measured by quarterly results." Does this really tell anybody what the consultant actually offers to/does for a client? Quite frankly, if somebody ever approached me as a prospect and said something so bland and vague to me as an effort toward getting my business, I'd tune them out right from the get-go.

That said, he does give some decent advice for marketing (which is really the most important thing about any business, as we all learn at some point). He gives good information about how to successfully integrate speaking and writing into your business as both marketing tools and profit centers.

I'd say it's probably worth a read, but I'm really surprised by how many people rave about it so strongly.

Book Description

The effective management of project portfolios that include numerous short-term projects, large multi-project programs, or both has become a growing challenge for industry, government, and other institutions. The Program Management Office is a guide to satisfying the needs for improved coordination, standardization, optimization, and management of project portfolios and the general practice of project management. It details the role and function of the PMO, processes for establishing and managing a PMO, and the three primary missions the PMO should serve to bring maximum value to organizations.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good, comprehensive textbook on PMOs.......2007-10-05

This books has been pretty valuable to me on my latest project. I'm a PMP who has done a lot of project management, but I've this was the first time I had to setup a PMO from scratch. With that task in mind, I started scraping together all of the PMO resources I could find. I located this book on Amazon and, after reading a few reviews, purchased it along with a few others.

First, the information in the book is well organized and the chapters are clear and concise. The first half of the book describes the process and requirements of setting up a PMO while the second half discusses PMO operations and on-going challenges after it is up and running. It didn't take long for me to rip the information from the first few chapters and develop a clear step-by-step plan for my project.

Normally, I find these textbooks complete snooze-fests but this one wasn't too bad. Either Craig Letavec did a great job in writing the book or my fear of tanking the project overcame my textbook-induced narcolepsy. Either way, I got what I needed from the material. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Works for me.......2007-08-02

Well done overall... walks you through how to develop your business case and sell the PMO, which is helpful if you have to do the selling like I did. Good coverage of practical items on how to start-up the PMO, what to focus on, how to develop a plan, common mistakes, and so forth. If you read from front to back, you more or less get a walk-through of PMO planning, implementation, and operation.

The second part of the book talks about roles of the PMO in several different areas (knowledge, consulting, and standards are the broad topics). The standards portion was most relevant for me as our PMO is expected to develop and enforce entrprise-wide PM practices. It gave me what I needed to know to get a good plan together. The knowledge and consulting sections were good reads as well--just not immediate focus areas for me personally.

So, to me, it was more complete than other PMO books I've seen without drowning me in detail. The website companion templates and so forth were good as well but expanding them would help. Hard to complain since they're free.

5 out of 5 stars A good resource.......2007-04-26

This book is organized well and I found it to be an easy to follow guideline.

5 out of 5 stars A good, practical resource.......2006-11-28

I bought this book because my company is considering implementing a PMO within our IT organization. Not knowing much about how to go about starting a PMO, I was looking for something that would give me some ideas on how to structure a PMO and how to plan and implement our PMO in a way that had some reasonable likelihood of success. For me, this book was a great resource.

Specifically, I liked the focus on performing a needs assessment before chartering a PMO, the fact that book helped me figure out how to "sell" the PMO concept to IT management in my organization, and the breakout of potential roles for the PMO within an organization and examples of how the PMO can be used to address project and process problems. I learned a lot about what a PMO can achieve and how to position the PMO for success. For anyone who is working to develop a PMO in their organization, I think this book is a great resource. There is some "theory" but plenty of practical guidance that you can actually use. I even e-mailed the author with a question about something in the book and he wrote back a three paragraph response!

5 out of 5 stars An accessible, all-around guide to setting up a business.......2003-08-30

Steven Rogers, a professor at the Kellogg School of Management, has put together a comprehensive handbook for aspiring entrepreneurs. Written in plain language that does not assume prior knowledge of business or economics, this guide covers all the major topics that entrepreneurs face in setting up and managing a business: writing up a business plan, compiling and understanding financial statements, making a company profitable, valuing a company, and raising money.

On the one hand, Professor Rogers has written a reference book that assembles much of the information that people intuitively know. In that sense, the guide can be useful to people who want to make sure they are "not forgetting something." On the other hand, though, this guide tackles many issues that quite a few entrepreneurs look down upon: for example, accounting. Professor Rogers not only explains how entrepreneurs should handle the mundane aspects of business like accounting, but also elucidates why entrepreneurs should pay attention to those aspects at all. In doing so, he alerts entrepreneurs about the kind of problems they may face and recommends action to prevent them.

Professor Rogers has compiled anecdotes, business quotations, industry data, and mathematical formulae (which he explains in detail), to write an accessible guide for aspiring business owners. This balance, between serious and humorous, and fact and theory makes the book both fun to read and very useful -- a definite read for those daunted by the prospect of starting their own business.

The thousands of budding entrepreneurs in the world share many common pitfalls. This book is IDEAL for anyone who is going to train or teach anything. How to cut the fluff and deliver the required facts.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing approach to learning and training--I highly recommend it..........2006-11-03

I am not a professional trainer by trade. However, I was recently appointed training coordinator for my department. The Accelerated Learning Handbook has definitely helped me approach my job with a fresh perspective. The information, ideas, and techniques presented have enabled me to more effectively train those in my department as well as those in other functions. Before reading the AL Handbook, I thought all that was needed to effectively teach someone was simply to make sure all of my PowerPoint slides were logically put together. I now have a broader view of how people learn and a sold framework to use when putting together training materials on any topic. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to engage the audience and create meaningful, effective training presentations.

5 out of 5 stars Practical ideas for facilitators.......2006-02-21

I have worked with adult learners for more than fifteen years and have always tried to incorporate whole-brained, participative learning. This book provided some excellent theoretical background as well as a lot of new instantly usable ideas. I wasn't even all the way through before I applied a couple of the techniques and got an excellent response from my client.

5 out of 5 stars excellent training tool.......2003-07-06

I was getting ready to prepare a training program for 44 persons when I read this book. Immediately! after I used the guidelines to prepare my session. Preparation was fast and easy -and fun! I really couldn't believe that it was that easy to apply and it has been one of my best sessions to date. I refer to it when I need a refresher or a new perspective. I definately reccomend this book for trainers who need to keep their material fresh and interesting (esp. in-house trainers).

4 out of 5 stars Accelerated Learning Handbook.......2002-01-02

Finally, teachers and administrators have a useful tool to recharge their classrooms/schools. We have become so test oriented that many times we forget that the process of learning comes from the doing. The statement comes to mind that we utter with new approaches," When do I have the time to get it all in?". That is where the problem lies! We are so pressured with these new demands that we loose sight of what is important, the process. This book will give us a clearer picture of how we can recharge our teaching and can provide the key so we can use the ideas to change the way we teach or approach the students' learning who are in our care.

My son is 9 and has latched on to this book. He skips around to read different sections and really seems to be enjoying it. He is already saving to start his first bank account, so we will see where he can go from here. After glancing through it, this seems to be a well written and easy to understand book. Hopefully this will be a good influence on him!

**** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ****

This book is not about money but I can certainly see how people who would incorporate the knowledge in this book could get ahead. For me this was a book of "Golden Rules", which if followed, would definitely bring riches to ones life. I don't know of a single person I wouldn't recommend this book to. Get it, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Weekly Devotional For success.......2007-03-25

Typical of Hill's writing style, the book is easy to read, and features numerous examples from his real life experience. Specifically, this book covers, among many other things:

Why some succeed and others don't.
Helping your children succeed.
Overcoming fear
Living your own life

This book focuses on achieving success through positive relationships and a healthy mental attitude. For more information on achieving financial success, you may want to read "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth," by Phillip Collinsworth.

5 out of 5 stars 52 weeks to growing rich with Napolean Hill.......2004-06-11

I have to admit that I am a huge fan of Napolean Hill. I loved Think and Grow Rich and I love virtually everythingelse he wrote as well.

I found this book to be excellent as a supplement to Think and Grow Rich. I keep a copy on my desk and read Napolean Hills wisdom before I commence the day. It works.

5 out of 5 stars Home Truths.......2002-11-05

Napolean Hill talks about attitude, outlook and how they influence a person's destiny. He's right and communicates this message to anyone who will listen. This book also has updated material more relevant to our time. If anyone is serious about changing their circumstance then this book is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Manuscript for Success.......2002-08-19

This is a wonderful book. What you are supposed to do is read a chapter a week. I had to plow right through the whole thing.

What Mr. Hill teaches, among other things is that you have to decide Exactly what you want, make a plan and go for it. He teaches about 40 other things too, but that is the main point.

Mr. Hill uses excellent examples from personal experience how to accomplish great things.

I'm sure you will love this book if you love success/self help type books.
