5 out of 5 stars Awesome devotional.......2007-08-22

This goes beyond a simple devotional and actually teaches important doctrine while at the same time being very practical. The book covers the Fruit of the Spirit, the characteristics of love from 1Cor. 13, as well as other key Bible texts. It cuts to the core of true biblical Christianity. Of course, what else would you expect from John MacArthur. It's impossible to find someone with whom you agree 100%, but John MacArthur is about as sound a Bible teacher as we have in our day. Great deal on Amazon!

4 out of 5 stars Good for a gift, less so for study.......2007-07-06

This is a product, pure and simple - a once-over-lightly presentation of a few passages of Scripture. It's right on target biblically, as is everything of MacArthur's, and that is the reason I've rated it as highly as I have. Don't buy it expecting depth, however; there is none to be found here, by design.

5 out of 5 stars MacArthur Does It Again.......2007-05-24

Bible scholar and preacher John MacArthur does it again with a pocket-sized study into Christian character as he focuses on four lessons from the Bible that lay out perfect Christian character. Like usual, MacArthur denounces the worldly views on what good character truly is and focuses instead on the example that we are meant to emulate: Jesus Christ.

MacArthur takes his reader on a journey through the Beatitudes(Matt. 5:3-12), the Progress of Faith (2 Peter 1:5-8), the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), and the Qualities of Love (1 Cor. 13:4-8). This extensive (but still simple) study points out such characteristics as humility, meekness, courage, passion, integrity, generosity, to name only a few. MacArthur has quickly become one of my favorite Christian educators because of his extensive knowledge of the Bible and his desire to take up the challenge of "unleashing God's truth, one verse at a time."

5 out of 5 stars Good things come in small books.......2007-02-07

Don't let the size of the book fool you. Though it is small it packs a punch. Many people are looking for step by step instructions when reading books on how to develope themselves. This book is not step by step. John MacArthur starts with the Beatitudes and works his way through the Fruit of the Spirit and so on. It will up to the reader and the Holy Spirit to get to new levels of maturity.

The Beatitudes are based around the word humility. How does someone teach that? Only the Holy Spirit can. If you're looking for a book to point you in the right direction, this is the book for you. If you want a step by step book on developing ones character, you will probably want to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Short, Concise and Relevant.......2007-01-09

I have read through this book now twice. Digging through the Bible to find the lists of traits that exemplify the type of person that God wills us to be can be daunting. MacArthur collects those lists of traits, qualities and behaviours together and then briefly yet expertly explains what they are and how they can be applied. Constantly going over these lists helps to burn them into your heart. Highly recommended.

Book Description

In this bestselling classic of financial management, G. Bennett Stewart, III, raises and answers these provocative questions:

More than that, Stewart lays the foundation for EVA r, the financial management and incentive system now in place at nearly 300 companies around the world, and which is rapidly becoming the global standard for corporate governance.

Managers, confused about what investors really want, often find it difficult to reach informed decisions regarding business strategy, acquisitions and divestitures, financial structure, dividend policy, and executive compensation. But now an EVA r -based revolution is providing a practical framework that managers can use to build a premium-valued company. At the forefront of this revolution is the consulting firm of Stern Stewart & Co., of which G. Bennett Stewart, III, author of The Quest for Value, is senior partner and cofounder.

The Quest for Value is written for senior management, key operating people, and planning and financial staff. This bible of financial management will assist managers in goal setting, resource allocation, strategy development, valuation of acquisitions, financial policy setting, incentive compensation planning, and building shareholder value.

The Quest for Value cuts sharply through the myths that to this day misinform corporate strategists in their pursuit of shareholder value. Laying waste to inaccurate yet widely used methods of performance, Stewart demonstrates how the Stern Stewart EVA r approach not only creates greater shareholder value but also provides a powerful framework for the broadest range of corporate decision making.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource on How to Deliver Results for Your Clients.......2007-01-06

When selling, it is easy to fall into the trap of talking price or comparing yourself to your competitors. The Quest for Value illustrates how you can quantify delivering value to your clients. Listen to their needs and use your product or service to deliver a solution for those needs. You can use EVA as a method to define the solution for your customers by quantifying the benefit. You will earn your client's respect without having to lower price or fall into roadblocks set by your competitors.

3 out of 5 stars Relatively little new or noteworthy.......2003-06-26

Many of the concepts in this book have been described and used by successful investors such as Graham in the 30s, Buffett's adaptation of Graham's ideas in the 70s and 80s, and the more recent breed of Intrinsic Value-driven investors who garner wide respect today. New terms are introduced with great fanfare when they often are simple rearrangements of well-known formulas (taking the inverse of a ratio somehow gives you a radically new insight?). It seemed to me that the major contribution of the author is a new set of acronyms.

Claims about how failing companies turned around into successes because they adopted EVA are not sufficiently supported. Those turnarounds could have happened for any of many other reasons. The claims would be believable if they were well supported with facts and deeper analysis. As they are, they detract from the overall quality of the book and raise questions about other claims made in it. At times the author's tone is condescending, as if we can all assume his statements don't need proof!!

The book could function as a fair reference but as most other reviewers have noted, there is no index, and the table of contents is about half a page! This is particularly difficult because the discussions of important concepts are somewhat spread about in the book.

On the positive side, the author's focus on return on capital is good and the reasoning well stated and easy to understand. By the same token, his discussions of what provides true value to the investor (and business manager) is good. But these are not very original. Either the book should have been about one-fourth as long, or the examples the author used to justify EVA should have been much more thoroughly developed.

5 out of 5 stars A Valuable Investment.......2003-02-03

In not possessing a Finance or Accounting background, I have found it extrememly difficult to find a book that can guide me from the very basics of corporate valuation through to the complexities inevitable in any such subject.

However I would urge any potential customer (either financially astute or a beginner like myself) who is genuinely interested in Value, to look no further than "The Quest for Value".

The key resides in the style (fully informative yet at times conversational / humorous), the content (rich in depth and explanation) and finally the extensive case studies and "war stories" that bring Valuation fully to life.

You dont have to be an accountant or corporate finance practioner to understand and apply the fundamental principles of EVA - in fact as the author sometimes alludes to, not possessing this background is perhaps a distinct advantage.

Investing in this Quest with Stern Stewart as my guide has helped me enormously.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe it is the key of the ývalueý and ýinvestmentý........2002-01-17

After getting my MBA 1995, I have read so many books discussing about value and investment, I recommend, however, that The Quest For Value is the one you must read. The reasons:

First, few books put the two topics (value, investment) in one theoretical system. Even the books or articles about "value investment" can be separated into two categories: these about "investment art", talking about, or written by investment experts (who's names on the Money Master and New Money Master); the other about the "valuation scientific methods". People talked about value investment ideas by totally separated way, the art, or the science.

Second, too many books discuss value investment by this way: "it is the one... (maybe earning, or cash flow, or working capital,) but..., or, if....,". So the investor become a boxer, who need professional speed and energy to quickly switch his positions and punch among the keep coming "but", "if" from either accounting or reality. Contrary to my boxer's inspiration, my best friend in business school told me: "Warren Buffett must have one secret point he never told anybody". I think the secret he means is what is "one dollar", and what is "forty cents", if buy low sell high is the plan. Haven't our two foolish business school students told you everything about the "modern" market efficiency and inefficiency theories?! I know value investment masters will feel sad for this kind of coming value investment young villagers. Anyway, besides the "professional strong" and the "superstition power" from the point of ours, is there a rational point to support the leverage of investment art.

The third, value investment is always about two aspects: the business and the management. From Fillip Fish's buy and hold sticky strategy to Peter Lnych's traveling and talking around the world, to Warren Buffet's appreciation: "he (the CEO) is this kind of person, you can marry your daughter to him", investment is about to invest, or to marry with, the management team. But, we need the handsome's picture.

The Fourth, what kind of morality standards fits Wall Street's social position. Probably, people don't have time to talk about good or bad, when the regulation of a game is win or loss. However, if you are playing NBA, your morality, personality, even image are kind of money at least, aren't they? Even you just doing exercise in your backyard, at least don't forget another possibility: win-win.

If you have this kind of questions, you must read this book. The author's capital efficiency view and five categories of business accordingly put the "value" and the "investment" two topics into one system to discuss.

And, The Economic Value Added (EVA) investment method is independent from the any accounting system. The accounting system as a standard record of business activities is only an object of study, criticize or judgment for investment decision but not a constriction of decision mine field. Contrary to "but" "if" talking, this book puts everything on this way: it is the one (EVA), so you should....

Additionally, to look for a good management maybe, for investor, can become to create of good management teams. This topic you can read EVA and Value-Based Management by Mr. Young and O'Byrne for further study.

Finally, the meaning of investment probably is not just NBA's win or loss. It is about to add or to damage (or even worse, to steal maybe) the social wealth according to EVA theory.

Interesting? Plus the author's good logic and good case study! The only lack of this book to me is that the Capitan Case only has one. After finishing the Capitan Case at the end of the book, I wish there were other four cases for the other four categories of business accordingly (If you know where I can read that, please let me know...).

There already been so many, so different opinions about this book on this site. While, if investment is art, according to Peter Lynch, or is a project, according to Charles Ellis, then any theory or method is just a kind of tool or weapon. So it will depend on the person, so it will depend on everything. I myself start the second reading after the first. I am going back to Main China pretty soon to do Investment Banking business, probably focus on LBO, and I will keep reading this book, talking about this book, and trying to imply this book. I think that I owe amzon.com a customer's view since I have got so much helps from others' views, so I recommend this book to you: If you have been so patient to read my view to here, you need read that book. Good Luck :)

Book Description

A Veritas Forum Book. The quest for truth is an adventure into real life.In her book Finding God at Harvard, Kelly Monroe brought together the stories of thinking Christians whose search for truth led them to Veritas---in the person of Jesus Christ. Now she tells the story of her own journey into wonder and discovery, which took her beyond the ivied walls of Harvard to universities across the country. In the midst of the arid skepticism of the academy, she found a vibrant, interdisciplinary community unafraid of facing life's toughest questions, embracing the quest for true knowledge with intellectual rigor, delight and joy. As The Veritas Forum grappled with the insights of the academy's brightest Christian scholars, Kelly came to realize that truth or Veritas is no mere abstract concept but the very light by which we see all things.Engaging narrative and provocative content come together in this mind-stretching and heart-challenging journey. Come with Kelly on an intellectual road trip as The Veritas Forum explores the deepest questions of the university world, and the culture at large. And discover for yourself that Veritas transcends philosophy or religion and instead brings true life.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars a hard to classify book .......2007-06-19

This book is mainly about the beginning of the Veritas forum, a group that promotes dialog within university about questions of faith, meaning, and purpose from a Christian perspective. It's difficult to classify in any one genre because the book is partly autobiographical, partly historical (regarding the Veritas forum), and partly religious. Ms. Monroe-Kullberg has traveled widely and garnered a tremendous amount of life experience, which quickly comes through in the book.

The strengths of the book are hearing about Monroe-Kullberg's life -- a profound heartbreak after a potential marriage relationship failed, her struggles with depression, her finding meaning for her own life, and the emergence of the Veritas forum. She nicely instills hope for those struggling to find meaning and purpose. Ultimately she makes her best case for believing in Christ and his teachings as recorded through the Bible. She does this by often drawing from material that various speakers at the Veritas forum have presented. Several of the quotations are true gems, worth ruminating on carefully. And interspersed throughout the book are several interesting stories. The account of her speaking to an extremely hostile classroom at SUNY Albany is particularly interesting!

The weaknesses of the book are: some readers may find that the book is written in an ornate style, and also at times quite repetitious. Monroe-Kullberg goes to great lengths to describe beauty and joy, sometimes in stylized journal entries. For example, "Waking at Deanna's under a glass dome ceiling in winter. Silent but for birds and wind. A January hike down the valley, ending up at Snowmass Lodge where I swam alone in a heated pool in the snow. Stroking the white and blue reflection of the mountains, water like liquid sky. The pines my friends in that moment... Water and snow, wood smoke and steam, pine and eucalyptus, the best of creation pouring into me in those hours. Remember the lesson of the skis, 'Trust the fall line, center, and go.' Freedom and form. As my Cambridge housemate Heather used to say, 'Relax and accelerate.' " (p. 113) A person's response to the style of this writing (which is quite common in the book) may strongly affect your response to the entire book.

Early in the book, the author duly notes how Harvard Divinity School is not even neutral to Christianity, but quite hostile. Many will be surprised to see just how anti-Christianity most secular universities are today, and they show no real signs of changing that direction. Thus, I wish the author had much more explored a sentiment by Tolkien briefly noted near the end of the book. Apparently he questioned whether the university would come to a point of no return and "believers will be called to abandon the university to itself, to its idols and self-deceptions, to its self-worship." (p. 173) Given the direction of universities today and the inability for various Christian efforts to fundamentally turn the tide, I wonder whether or not that time has come. This is a hard question, and one that few reflect on, but perhaps would have brought a whole new dimension to the book.

4 out of 5 stars A Quest Indeed.......2007-05-10

Kelly Monroe Kullberg, one of the principle founders of the Veritas Forum, a grass roots Christian apologist organization committed to the dialogue of God and Christian ideas in a secular, specifically university system, has written an anecdotal book about the forum, her faith and certain struggles, both religious and professional, and the many lives the forum has touched over the years.

Her book is interesting and fun, but it is not as clear of an apologist book as I thought it would be. The strengths of this book are her stories about certain college events such as her lecture, or more properly stated, her dialogue with many hostile students at SUNY, Albany. Her approach to dialogue with the hostile crowd showed great Christian maturity and wisdom. I wish there were more stories in this book like that one.

I think her personal struggles will help many readers in college, particularly schools that are more secular, even if they were once founded on Christian principles. I bought this book for my daughter as she will be a freshman in college this fall and I think she is one of the intended audiences. This book is a help to Christian college students by giving them a foretaste of secular college life with an assurance of the correctness of the Christian viewpoint.

5 out of 5 stars Intellect and belief don't have to clash.......2007-03-01

Kelly Monroe Kullberg's latest book, Finding God Beyond Harvard: The Quest for Veritas is a follow-up to Finding God at Harvard: Spiritual Journeys of Thinking Christians, which Monroe (sans Kullberg) edited a decade ago.

Harvard, now best known as the flagship of the Ivy League schools, was founded in 1636 so that, according to Kullberg, "students might be free to know truth and life in relation to Jesus Christ." A 1643 brochure quoted in the Harvard Guide indicates Harvard existed "`[t]o advance Learning and perpetuate it to Posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate Ministry to the Churches.'"

But by the last decade of the 20th century when Monroe arrived at Harvard to research and write a thesis entitled `The Gospel in the Information Age,' the gospel of Jesus Christ seemed nowhere to be found. At Harvard Divinity School, of all places, Kullberg was disillusioned to discover that pretty much any belief was welcome, from paganism to eco-feminism--except belief in Jesus Christ.

But in the midst of her disillusionment, God showed Kullberg, as he had Elijah after Elijah's confrontation with Jezebel's priests, that she was not the only believer still left in the land. A friend connected her with the Harvard Graduate School Christian Fellowship, and she discovered a place where "the gospel was passionately discussed by students in the Schools of Law, Business, Medicine, Government, Design, Arts and Sciences. For the first time since coming to Harvard," Kullberg writes, "I saw joy." Out of this small beginning grew not only the book, Finding God at Harvard, a compilation of the stories of many of the believers Kullberg came to know at Harvard, but also the Veritas Forum, a ministry that, along with Kullberg's personal faith journey, is the subject of Finding God Beyond Harvard.

With passion, honesty, and a humble spirit, Kullberg recounts the story of the Veritas Forum's beginning. "It is thrilling," as Phillip E. Johnson writes in the January/February 2007 issue of Touchstone, "to read about how the Veritas movement began . . . how it grew from a novel lecture series to a way of life." But it is equally thrilling to read of Kullberg's own faith journey and how God brought her through the `dark night of the soul' that afflicts so many thinking Christians, ultimately restoring her to both spiritual and physical health.

Take the time to read Finding God Beyond Harvard: The Quest for Veritas. Read Finding God at Harvard, too. Together, these two books demonstrate that intellect doesn't have to be an impediment to belief. And Kullberg's sense of wonder and spirit of gratitude when she speaks of the Creator of the universe will strengthen your own faith and bring a blessing to your life. - Linda Whitlock, Christian Book Previews.com

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtfully Inspiring.......2007-01-05

This book spoke to me in ways that "how to" books and study guides have not. I have been concerned about students and our "institutions of higher learning" since reading about the exploits of Ward Churchill and well...my troubled days at school.

5 out of 5 stars An absorbing and moving discourse blends Christian insights with university analysis........2006-10-15

A satisfying blend of memoir and theology follows author Kelly Kullberg's search for God in Finding God Beyond Harvard: The Quest for Veritas. The Veritas Forum brings Christian principles to universities: it follows the author's love of God to the highest levels of understanding, identifying a group of Christian friends and scholars who are speakers, scientists, authors and lecturers. An absorbing and moving discourse blends Christian insights with university analysis.

Book Description

Most of us began our adult lives with ambitious dreams and the energy and determination to make them come true. But somewhere along the way our focus changed-life "happened," and we allowed our dreams to fizzle or even die. Is that the way it has to be? Do dreams come true for "ordinary" people? And if so, what does it take to make them happen? Author Mark Atteberry believes God has answered these questions in the life of Caleb, the boldest dreamer and achiever in all of Scripture.

In The Caleb Quest, Atteberry allows us to see that dreams don't come true by accident. On the contrary, fulfilled dreams are the result of clear thinking, strong faith, patience, and hard work. Geared to the everyday Christian, this biblical plan helps readers to test their dreams, identify "dream assassins," get God involved, accept His perfect timing, take action in pursuit of their dreams, and use their dreams to bless others. This inspirational book offers a realistic hope to anyone seeking to make a lifelong dream come true.

This book so struck me because Mark takes you right into the campfire of the appointed spies. We get to visit with Caleb as he lives a dream planted by God. Every boy filled with adventure wants to know; "Do I have what it takes"? Mark through the biblical account of the 12 spys answers that question for us; NO! But if you'll exercise a "grape" of faith the God of the Bible will take you on a jouney that fulfills your wildest dreams! Thanks for the ride Mark. Who's next?

5 out of 5 stars A moving personal testimony .......2004-08-09

The Caleb Quest presents one Christian man's search for answers to the troubling question: "If God's promises are true, then why are so many of His people walking aroud with dashed hopes and unfulfilled dreams?" The answers discovered lie in the message of Caleb, the boldest dreamer of the Bible, who dared to make the right moves and was rewarded with riches. Written with both spiritual and earthly concerns in mind, The Caleb Quest strives to present the wisdom of God and the Bible in tangible form with discussion questions, and solid advice than anyone can ponder and follow in their struggles to make their own dreams come true. A moving personal testimony combined with a call to take action and stay true to one's faith the Lord.

4 out of 5 stars An Intriguing and Well Thought-Out Book.......2004-06-28

Author Mark Atteberry knows firsthand from his day job as a minister that countless Christians are discouraged by the way their lives are turning out. "Their dreams have fizzled, and in some cases, turned to nightmares," writes Atteberry. "The dream job was never offered, the dream marriage lost its fire, the dream kids went astray, and the dream house was never built." In THE CALEB QUEST he promises, "Hope could be resurrected in your heart...Your faith in God could be renewed...Suddenly, your life could have meaning and purpose again."

Big promises, and they come from Atteberry's own personal quest. He writes that he was troubled that so many scripture verses in the Bible promised so much, yet so many Christians were mourning the death of their dreams. "Has God been unfaithful to His promises?" asks Atteberry. "Do dreams really come true? And if so, what does it take to make them happen?"

Atteberry went looking for answers. He found them, he believes, when he studied the life of Caleb, whom he calls "The boldest dreamer and achiever in all of God's word." Writes Atteberry, "I'm convinced that the main reason his story was included in Scripture is to show us that dreams really do come true, not just in Disney movies, but in real life."

When we look at the life of Caleb, we discover that fulfilled dreams are the result of clear thinking, strong faith, patience and lots of hard work, Atteberry writes. The key is taking a hard look at your dream and making sure it fits with God's will. "Nothing...will help you if you've already committed to a course of action that puts you in opposition to God." He also cautions readers, with some humor, that God's blessings always harmonize with His gifts ("If you're tone-deaf, you'll never be an opera singer. Rap maybe, but not opera.").

Atteberry is the minister of Poinciana Christian Church in Kissimmee, Florida, and the author of THE SAMSON SYNDROME. His passion for his topic in THE CALEB QUEST is contagious, and his first person writing is reminiscent of and is as well thought-out as a good sermon series. He mixes biblical narrative and interesting anecdotes, from art to baseball to crabbing. He also alludes to his own dream fulfillment, from his first attempts to write a novel eighteen years ago to becoming a published author. "Don't ever tell me dreams don't come true," writes Atteberry, who then cautions, "...they don't always come true when you want them to." Our timing for our dreams isn't always God's timing, he reminds us. Patience is called for. "Our job is simply to be faithful in the meantime," he writes.

Atteberry devotes a chapter to the "dream killers," pointing out that they are often our family members and our friends, and challenging readers to defeat them with courage and trust in the Lord. Of course our own worst enemy, he cautions, may be ourselves. "Have you grown lazy? Are you hanging around with negative people?"

There's a bit of THE PRAYER OF JABEZ tone to this book, and occasionally some of the sentences feel over-hyped: "...you could be only a few pages away from finally understanding how to get from where you are to where you've always wanted to be"). But readers will appreciate Atteberry's plea for them to be "humble and teachable." "The Caleb Quest is no pie-in-the sky prescription for wealth and happiness," he warns readers. "It rejects the 'name it and claim it' theology that has left so many confused and discouraged. Instead, it offers a down-to-earth, biblical, workable plan for making your lifelong dream come true."

The jacket copy promises quite a bit ("...this book will dramatically change your life...you'll finally discover what God wants you to know" ) --- maybe too much. But the book ends on a lovely note: "My dreaming friend, as you close this book and lay it down, I pray that you'll take up the Caleb Quest, and that someday, at the time of God's choosing, you'll see the fulfillment of your lifelong dream. But just as fervently, I pray that when it happens, you'll use it to bless others. If you do, I predict you'll make a startling discovery: that the giving away of your dream will bring you more joy than its fulfillment ever did."

Readers should find this an intriguing book, and questions for personal or group study should offer opportunity for additional perspective on what it means to dream big for God.

To Judith Shklar, among all the compnents of citizenship, there are two that are most important - the right to vote, and the right to earn. In regards to the former, in her mind, the act of voting is much less important than having the right to vote, a belief starkly contrasted by Tocqueville. By earning, she means being remunerated for labor. She says that by this definition, aristocrats and beggars cannot be true citizens because they to not earn based upon their own labor; artistocrats - based upon the efforts of others, and beggars - based upon handouts from the money of others. At times, her point is very hard to find, and at other times it seems like she just goes on and on. But overall, I know more for having read it.

3 out of 5 stars Unusual interpretations of biblical characters.......2005-12-30

When you think of a man of valor, what do you envision? A soldier in the Special Forces? A knight in shining armor? Richard Exley encourages every Christian man to be a man of valor. Dividing the book into seven sections, he explores the characteristics that describe the man of valor: spiritual passion, courage, loyalty, integrity, sexual purity, wisdom, and compassion. He explores these character traits with a good use of anecdotes, Scripture, and reasoning.

Though not strictly a devotional book, it resembles one in that each chapter is short with one basic point. Each chapter ends with encouragement to act on the lesson, a quotation, at least one verse of Scripture, and a prayer.

Exley uses anecdotes powerfully to make his points. He takes a strong stand against abortion and offers much encouragement to men. He recommends that men discipline themselves spiritually. His chapter on the discipline of Scripture study is particularly good.

The book will appeal most to those who believe in eternal security because of his definition of legalism, his understanding of the imputation of Christ's righteousness, and his rather unusual definition of hypocrisy. Though he urges men to sexual purity, he argues that some men, who fall into a one-time sexual affair or struggle with a pornography habit, are not hypocrites and deeply love their wives. Their wives might disagree.

At times Exley reaches in his interpretations. He criticizes Elijah's relationship with God for being "built on power rather than intimacy." (18) He also tells the reader that when God asks Elijah, "What are you doing here?" He doesn't really mean it as we understand it. Exley doesn't offer a more precise Hebrew translation, but his own interpretation of the situation.

His understanding of Moses' life is a little unusual too. He personalizes Romans 11:29, which is a warning about the election of Israel and the Gentiles, and uses it to say, "there is nothing you can do-- no willful disobedience, no foolish mistake--which will cause God to revoke his call on your life." Julie Marie Bunck has done a splendid job in revealing to the reader the sometimes harsh policies that Fidel Castro has taken to enhance the development of a socialist/communist conscience in revolutionary Cuba. With meticulous research, she reveals the failures and successors of the Maximum Leader in attempting to construct socialism in all human forms.

When Dan Quayle chastised the sitcom Murphy Brown for flouting traditional family values by having its lead give birth out of wedlock, he had a point: television had moved beyond the Nelsons to the new world of the Simpsons. That shift, along with other harbingers of social change, allowed both Democrats and Republicans to deploy apocalyptic visions of family decline and social disorder. (A factoid: premarital pregnancy rates have never fallen below 10 percent throughout our history.) In this lively reading of American social history, Gillis shows us that the good old days were never really all that good and that while family values are not in danger, it won't keep many of us from yearning for a fabulous golden age when kids minded their elders and all was right with the world.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant synthesis........2001-05-18

This thoughtful and orginal book is well written and fascinating. It incorporates a wide historiography into a brief and cogent synthesis while making its main points. Whether you are a scholar of the history of the family, a student writing a research paper or just someone interested in interogating your own family myths, this book would be very useful.

4 out of 5 stars Social construction of family images.......2000-03-21

I really enjoyed this book by Gillis. I particulary found the idea of, the family we live by versus the family we live with, interesting. I used this book to write a research paper on the social construction of family photographs. Are the images the photograph imply real? Is it an image the family has constructed on purpose? Gillis has made a lot of intersting points in this book and everyone should read it.
