5 out of 5 stars CID Guide to Buying Foreclosures.......2007-05-06

Sunday, May 6, 2007

For a newbie, this is an excellent introduction. It shows you the way to proceed, if you're serious about trying. For the price, it is a bargin and should be kept as a reference. If you're like me, a yellow lighter can be quite helpfull. Well worth the price when you consider the large sums of money that can be involved.

4 out of 5 stars Very Insightful.......2007-03-10

This is a very informative book. It doesn't mess around with a lot of fluff. I highly recomend it!

5 out of 5 stars Provides solid information worthy of the Complete Idiot Guide series.......2007-01-22

I've always enjoyed the Complete Idiot Guide series. Why? Because it delivers the message down to earth. It takes highly complexed legal matters and shows you step by step on how to invest in foreclosures. If you want to make money in foreclosures or have wanted to invest in them, you need to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars READ ME FIRST - A comical and resourceful guide.......2006-11-13

This is a comical and resourceful guide to foreclosures, offering an easy to read handbook on how to invest in govt or bank foreclosed properties. Other titles that helped me about foreclosures -- Investing With out Losing: The Beginner's Guide to Real Estate Tax Lien and Tax Deed Auctions

4 out of 5 stars Provides good information for getting started.......2006-11-07

Provides a large amount of information in a concise but easy-to-read format. Considering all of the nuances of buying foreclosures, from the legal considerations to the occupation stage, the author does a good job of capturing and conveying the essentials. The author also does a good job of communicating both public and private foreclosure opportunities, which is important in many states.
The author focuses primarily on 'investing in foreclosures' vs. 'buying a foreclosure for your primary residence.' Consider this when comparing to other books.
Could have used more specific information on where to look for foreclosure opportunities, but the book does mention that actively searching and networking is a key to the game.
Overall, a good, easy read with valuable information for anyone wishing to enhance their real estate expertise.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal Book on Cold Calling.......2007-08-12

I am one of those rare folks who enjoys cold calling but I picked up this book as a companion to Closing the Sale. This is an excellent read that can better you best results or turn around your cold calling (lack of) success. In short, this is the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars With Keith by Your Side, Cold Calling Works!.......2007-08-09

Despite what some talking heads may say, cold calling works. I've read both the "anti-cold calling" books as well as Mr. Rosen's books, and I can say that the arguments clearly lean in Mr. Rosen's favor. The "never cold call again" groups really address similar stuff that Mr. Rosen does, which leads me to believe that their position is more a matter of savvy marketing, driven to sell books, rather than anything revolutionary.

With that said, cold calling doesn't work...that is, unless you have a method that provides you with measurable results. And that's precisely what Mr. Rosen's book gives you. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cold Calling, is one of those essential books that never has a chance to rest on a shelf and collect dust.

In my experience, I was stuck. I had been cold calling for a couple of years and found myself in a telemarketing quandary. Mr. Rosen's book couldn't have come at a better time. He combines a precise, no-nonsense message with words that are easy on the eyes. His book is equal parts practical guide and motivational tool. I particularly appreciated the time he commits to the psychology of selling. The emphasis on process goals (a book he should write next) is a new look at the outcome-driven goals that many of us were taught to follow.

I read Mr. Rosen's book and committed time to completing his exercises and following his techniques. Two weeks later, I scheduled five qualified appointments. Why do I say "qualified"? Before I read his book, I focused on setting up the appointment. I'd meet with prospects, but after all the driving and time spent in an office, often, the only thing I had to show for my effort was a wrinkled shirt that required dry cleaning. Using Mr. Rosen's book as a guide, matters quickly turned around for me. I met with people that were ready to close because I qualified them over the phone. I wish I had his book three years ago. (To think of all the gas I would have saved!)

If you've doubted your skills, needed some fresh ideas, or are new to the cold calling process, buy The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cold Calling. Once you do, you'll soon have a book that has a worn down spine, pages loaded with Post-its, and a cover that refuses to stay shut--just like mine.

4 out of 5 stars Idiot's Guide to Cold Calling Review.......2007-07-28

This is a good book for those who are just beginning their cold calling career. It provides good techniques as well as outlooks on the reasons for cold calling. I would recommend for any novice cold-caller just getting started. However, for those who loathe cold calling, but realize the necessity of it in their business, I would HIGHLY recommend Wendy Weiss's Cold Calling for Women.

5 out of 5 stars complete idiots guide to ccold calling.......2007-05-30

the best cold calling book out there. Really changed how I view about cold calling. I hated it before. Was truly stuck and terrorized by the phone. Very easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars A must read if you set sales appointments over the phone........2006-12-23

As a sales professional with over 20 years of sales experience I've read many books on various sales issues I can say this is one of the best and most useful. I'm always looking for fresh ideas and Keith Rosen has really done a fantastic job in covering all the aspects of cold calling. Compared to all of the other books on cold calling this is the best I've read.

Keith's approach to the call and the to the process itself are completely professional and teaches you how to be respectful to the person on the other end of the phone. If you follow the techniques that Keith outlines you will have better success in securing more quality appointments with more prospects.

Do you recognize the business value of "execution"--the critical ability to deliver what you promise, under budget and on time--but aren't quite sure how to get there consistently? The Complete Idiot's Guide to Project Management, by marketing and business-development specialists Sunny and Kim Baker, outlines proven ways to apply this key skill to various situations. In typical Idiot's Guide fashion, it explains all of the steps necessary to plan a project, assemble and lead teams, monitor progress, and bring resultant efforts to a successful conclusion. Tips on resolving conflict, handling change, using software, and keeping in touch with those involved are among the highlights. In a chapter called "Making Your Communications Count," for example, the Bakers examine numerous methods for distributing information that will "get your message across." They first look at the pros and cons of nine forms of interchange, from telephone and e-mail to memo and presentation; they then offer guidelines for creating effective messages and selecting appropriate delivery vehicles. Similar treatment also is given to other relevant topics, such as assembling adequate resources, launching projects in ways that motivate participants, and moving team members to other roles once their current job is finished. --Howard Rothman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Idiots.......2006-02-25

Excellent guide for those wanting to learn about project management. Used this for a class and it was extremely helpful. Easy, clear reading.

5 out of 5 stars A Practical Introduction to Project Management.......2006-01-13

A practical, direct introduction to project management in plain English -- that's how I would sum up this book.

The Bakers use PMI terminology (the project initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing processes), and provide good guidance throughout the book to beginners.

Each chapter is well structured with a clear introduction, middle and summary. There are practical common sense tips throughout the book, examples are easy to follow and there are useful bullet points that you can use as checklists for your projects.

If you are a seasoned projet manager, this book is not for you. However, it can be of great use if you are planning to create a project management training session for your company/clients.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction for the New Project Manager.......2005-08-11

This is a good first book for those without any project experience. It explains concepts clearly, and gives good examples. It will probably not provide enough depth for those individuals who are beyond the beginning phase: again, that doesn't appear to be its intent. I enjoy the way this series chunks information into easily digestible forms.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book !!.......2004-11-11

It's been about 30 years since I did any reading on management
in school, but those years it now appears have been littered with
something that I didn't know to call Project Management.
I was nodding my head in agreement all the way through the book.

This text seems to have combined the terminology and structure
of Project Management (new to me) with a very appropriate emphasis on the coordination, communication, and for lack of a better word, politics of making something happen.
This book is not another over-simplified to the point of being
useless novice book. This one is filled with useful material yet still reads well.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Companion for those new to Project Management........2003-04-07

Actually, it isn't bad for experienced project managers to review the different sections of this book for a quick refresher on an annual basis. This is a very good book to have on your desk while you are working on your first couple of projects as a project manager. It explains in very simple terms the various aspects of this extensive field of project management. Like everyone else, you too may feel like project management is too overwhelming a subject when you first start out. It really helps to have a book like this nearby. You may want to keep it out of sight to prevent silly remarks from your colleagues.

The sidebars that you will see throughout the book 'Words from the Wise' and 'Project Lingo' are extremely useful to read and get upto speed on the definitions and the tricks of the trade. The only limitation that I found is that the treatment on some of the topics isn't very complete. That is completely understandable as this isn't aimed at teaching advanced tricks of the trade to the seasoned project manager. For that, you need to refer to an advanced book like Harold Kerzner's 'Project Management - A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling, and Controlling'. Or keep up with the latest by attending seminars and workshops at your local chapter of the PMI (Project Management Institute...).

Finally, keep in mind that there are situations in project management that are specific to the industry you are in and sometimes there is no right answer. But most other times, the knowledge in this book is extremely helpful. Overcome the fear of being caught with a book that has the word 'Idiot' in the title and exploit the knowledge that the book provides!

4 out of 5 stars KM is not for dummies or idiots.......2007-08-25

I have been reviewing the literature of Knowledge Management (KM) for over a year. I am surprised how much is written about KM, but how little it is employed in the workplace, learning place, and government. The Complete Guide is a fine introduction--even though it is five years old, providing the core concepts and a well-rounded Glossary of KM.

Now, if we could only get the decision-makers to collaborate with us fire-starters and implement KM, we wouldn't be idiots for lack of access to knowledge resources.

4 out of 5 stars A good introductory overview of the subject.......2007-03-09

As the title indicates, this is a basic introduction to the topic of Knowlege Management (KM). For that purpose it does a good job of covering the subject and providing a basic outline for planning your own KM implementation in your organization. It's not "the only book you'll need" to implement KM, nor does it claim to be, although more details on references would be a good addition for those going on to the next level.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Knowledge Management .......2006-11-10

An excellent book for novices and those wanting to start KM activities in a go. Simple and easy to read and very well structured.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent grounding in knowledge management theory and practice!.......2005-12-31

Melissie is a wonderful person, a great writer, and a very knowledgeable knowledge management expert.

Her writing is engaging without being patronizing or overly complex. She provides a wonderful overview of a number of different knowledge management practices. This was one of my most-thumbed-through books when I was first learning about knowledge management (having been asked to lead a brand-new knowledge management department, I had to come up to speed fast!).

I highly recommend this book for anyone who's getting started in the field and wants to learn more, as well as anyone in any field who wants an overview of what knowledge management is all about.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Understandable Reference.......2005-12-02

By far the most useful of all my KM references. An excellent choice if you are trying to initiate a KM effort in your organization and to help people understand what KM is and isn't!

5 out of 5 stars What's Inside.......2007-07-22

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Foreign Currency gives you an overview of Forex and who trades it. You'll find a history of how Forex started, an overview of the key terms you need to know and how to find the most current information about currency on the internet and in other print publications as well.

You'll find an entire chapter on why currency changes value including discussions about economics and business cycles, political developments, changes in interest rates, international stock news, inflationary expectations, international investment patterns and policies adopted by Governments and Central Banks. We also discuss how you as a trader can take advantage of these changes.

Next we cover the eight key currencies you can consider trading as a new trader and then talk about the risker emerging country currencies to watch after you have more experience and decide you want to take on more risk.

After that there are four chapters on trading basics you need to know - trading platforms, hardware and software; basics of technical analysis (don't expect to learn how to do technical analysis with this book - it's just an intro - that is a book in itself), fundamental analysis, and the risks you face as a Forex trader.

Fianlly we look at the tools you can use for trading including how to deveop your money strategies and how to place orders. We do use co-author Gary Tilkin's software, which is available on the CD Rom included with the book, with sample trades but recommend others that can be accessed on the internet as well. Gary Tilkin is the founder and CEO of Global Forex Trading, which is an online foreign exchange dealing company. He is an internationally renowned expert in currency trading and the futures markets with over 30 years of trading experience.

Other chapters discuss using mini accounts, managed Forex and trading systems, and how to avoid money fraud.

1 out of 5 stars I guess I am not a complete idiot, as I hated this book........2007-07-06

This is a book filled with old and obselete material which can be found almost anywhere. It is certainly NOT a newly written book.

I found many things which while once true, are no longer true. Obviously they were copied from old sources. I did not find anything which is new, or would be of help to a new trader. I teach Forex trading to beginners, and none of my students felt this book had any value to them.

You don't need to be an idiot to trade Forex. But you would have to be to think you could learn anything from this book.

To me, one star is much too high a rating.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2007-07-03

Not recommended - not what you expect when you buy "Idiot Guides." I think other books are probably much better. It gave me very little understanding of trading currency, and definitely missed the mark in many areas. There are many grammatical errors, and the author constantly pushes his own website as being the best. He spends little time explaining what actually moves currency prices, which should have been a main topic. Instead, he spends much time discussing things like what kind of computer you need, what a bid/ask is, and how to pick a good broker (use his company)- which most people can figure out for themselves. His chapter on technical analysis is almost comical - it does nothing more than describe what a candlestick chart is, a bar chart, and what a trend is.

The single useful advice I could come up with is his recommendation to cover a loss at a 30 pip decline, and shoot for a 100 pip profit. Otherwise, in many paragraghs he says interest rates boost a currency value and in one paragrapgh they lower a currency value, so I am left wondering which it is...

At this point, I have to buy another book because I basically understand nothing. I still have no idea how brokers charge interest on your margin, or how long people hold currency trades. The author frequently mentions losing everything in a few minutes but does not explain how this happens -ie - why you cannot just wait for it to come back like with stocks and options.

Overall, you will definitely need to buy another book. I think this book was very poorly written and does not convey information well at all.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful looking into global markets.......2007-03-16

Being new to the foreign currency markets I found this book to be very good at answering the questions that I didn't know or was too embarassed to ask anyone. Clearly written, I think it is a must read for anyone that is thinking about trading currencies, or anyone who has traded currencies but may still have questions.

Covers basics and most important things to get you started. The rest you will forget anyway

the fast way to teach mba basics

4 out of 5 stars Better than the Dummies Equivalent.......2000-04-26

This book covers a lot of ground and is easy to follow (sometimes too easy). A lot of the contents can be redundant for those with a background in marketing, finance, etc. but it is well rounded. I compared it to the Dummies equivalent and found this one to be a better read (I usually buy Dummies though - this is my first Idiots guide).

4 out of 5 stars Good Book, but too basic.......2000-03-30

Read this book, if you are absolute dummy with English and Maths. It is a great book for beginners with no background in maths.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Broad Overview and Practical Tips.......2007-08-31

This book is great. It gave me a broad overview of the mortgage industry and practical tips to get started as a mortgage broker. This book covers everything from are you the right person for this industry?, how to interpret financial indicators?, how to put all the success-proof components (knowledge, marketing, and technology) in motion?, what types of loans are available?, how to open your own shop when you are ready?, to even how to strike a work life balance? This is an easy read and I highly recommend it to anyone who might be interested in getting started in the mortgage industry.

Thanks Dan for writing such a valuable book.

5 out of 5 stars DANIEL KAHN REALLY OUT DID HIMSELF!!.......2007-08-21

I've read several Mortgage Broker books in preparation of starting my own Mortgage Broker firm. I can sincerely state that this is the most concise and informative Mortgage Broker book I've read. Daniel not only breaks the Mortgage Industry down into layman terms, but he also provides his readers access to his personal business web site.

GREAT JOB DAN!!

5 out of 5 stars Real estate sales person recommends this book!.......2007-08-05

As a real estate sales professional for almost twenty years, I know how important it is to work with a competent mortgage broker. Dan Kahn gives great insight into what it takes to become a success in the mortgage business - he lays it out from just getting started to getting ahead. This book is also a valuable reference tool for home buyers since it explains the mortgage process and its lingo. I found it an easy read and a book to keep for future reference.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Read.......2007-06-27

I am not much of a reader at all, but this book is clear and to the point. If you are new to the mortgage industry this book will give you a good base of knowledge to get you started. It will not teach you all of the ins and outs, but will introduce you to terms and ideas essential for understanding what the heck you are talking about to clients. Some of the contents are a little more than the beginner needs to know, but you can easily bypass those parts. Overall a good book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-04-12

Well researched. Content decently put together. Makes you want to just keep reading. Great job author! Serves as good reference material too. Good for keeps.

2 out of 5 stars More Like "Incomplete".......2007-02-07

This book was a starting point, but was not "Complete" by any means. I was hoping this book would delve into specifics, such as how to go about obtaining contractors to have a coffee bar built, or give real life statistical examples of day-to-day coffee bar operations. Understanding the author(s) cannot possibly account for everything one would experience as a coffee bar owner, it would have been nice to get a picture. The good thing about the book, as stated earlier, is it gives ideas of things one should think about- such as payroll, hiring tips, color schemes, etc. but again, they're just starting points. It will be necessary for me to purchase another book to build on this one......bummer

5 out of 5 stars Well-balanced, lively, informative, and entertaining.......2006-03-17

One of the things that struck me most about this book is that it seems perfectly balanced. By this I mean that it covers all the general business angles of running a coffee bar, but it never loses sight of its coffee-oriented focus. While there's certainly plenty of information that people running other businesses would find useful in here, you'll never find yourself thinking that you could have gotten the same information out of a more generic business or restaurant business guide. Everything focuses on the particular application of principles to the unique issues and problems that face the owner and operator of a coffee bar. Even when discussing cross-promotion and various forms of publicity the book discusses things that are likely to work best with your products and services.

You won't just find information in here on business plans, licensing issues, equipment, suppliers, staffing, and publicity however. There are guides to roasting beans (in case you want to create your own blends, or just want to understand what you're buying), creating a wide variety of coffee drinks and related treats, and cultivating repeat customers.

In addition to the vast wealth of information, the attitude with which this book was written is fantastic. It's practical yet positive, realistic yet optimistic. It livens things up with a dry wit yet never allows the humor to get in the way of the information it's trying to convey. It will make you excited about even topics like marketing your business without ever coming across as empty cheerleading.

I quite enjoyed reading this book, and have to firmly remind myself after reading it that no, I really am not the kind of person who can go out and start such a business. Because after reading all of this handy and fascinating information, the prospect is delightfully tempting!

5 out of 5 stars Deserves 10 stars.......2006-03-10

This is a must for anyone who plans to open a coffee bar or shop. It not only provides all the necessary information for menu, location, prepration of specialty coffee drinks, everything you need to know about running a business is included. The descriptions of employee training manual and employee handbook, how to hire and fire, as well as too many vital things to mention, have me reading it again and again. This book will be a useful tool for months (years) in the future.

5 out of 5 stars From what it's really like to run a coffee bar to legal issues, sales, shop equipment choices, kitchen layout and more.......2006-03-03

There's plenty of money to be made in the coffee business and if your dream is to get out there and run a coffee bar, you're in luck: Complete Idiot's Guide To Starting & Running A Coffee Bar provides all the basics on how to do so. From what it's really like to run a coffee bar to legal issues, sales, shop equipment choices, kitchen layout and more, much of the book is very specific to the coffee industry and provides a wealth of specific business advice.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2006-07-16

Before I went into the business, I read this one and "I'm Living Your Dream Life" by Michele Cozzens. Both are very valuable tools.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Hits.......2006-06-26

This book totally hits it down. From the perspective of someone who loves to look at B&Bs but doesn't often follow the latest trends of demographics and whatnot in an industry laden with stealth, mystery, and cloak & dagger tactics I found out that it is much more of a business to unravel and spend time juxtaposing with other work rather than just a casual fling of an investment like what would result if one were, for instance, to open a stock account and buy a specific amount of random (or highly recommended) equities. The author is very well known in his subject matters and thus procreats an authenticity of vernacular style of someone who would run a typical B&B but who would author books and articles on the side kinda like Robin Masters from that excellent television programme Magnum PI - how he would just like let that dude stay in his house all the time and dog out his Ferrari but wouldn't barely even charge him very much because all in all they were the best of friends AND because Higgins, despite all of his worldliness just was not up to par in keeping up with a crafty and backstabbing individual like Thomas Magnum.

3 out of 5 stars Complete Idiot's Guide to Running a Bed and Breakfast.......2006-02-17

Although this book has a lot of good advice, it's not my favorite book I've read on the subject. It seemed rather drawn out and some of the advice was rather vague. It's the fourth book I've read on the subject, since I am planning on opening a B&B soon. I still would recommend reading it, but read others as well.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiots Guide to Running a Bed & Breakfast.......2006-01-30

Lots of good ideas that will save us time and money.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Idiot's Guide to Running a Bed and Breakfast.......2005-09-20

My husband and I have stayed at B&B's all over the world and have come to realize how very special they are. We have first-hand experience as guests - what is exceptional and what is detrimental - and in our pursuit of a dream semi-retirement income, we decided to look into the ins-and-outs of running a B&B. This book conveys the positives and the negatives of B&B ownership with its no-holds-barred representation. I am a business owner in private practice as a holistic practitioner and as a product creator/manufacturer for my website [...], I have some business knowledge but certainly not with having "someone in my home" as my source of income. I highly recommend this book to anyone even toying with the possibility of B&B ownership. After reading it and doing some introspection, then make your choice whether to pursue it further.
