Customer Reviews:
Could be better.......2007-03-27
This was an assigned text book for a class and even my professor barely used it. It seems to be written from a limited point of view for project management, such as assuming that all project managers interact with customers or that all project managers write proposals. It does, however, go over key subjects from a high level...but not very in depth at all. I hoped for a better textbook for my Proj Management Systems class.
Successful Project Management .......2007-01-17
This has been one of the best books I ever bought. The step by step procedure to complete a project was exceptional; and I would recommend it to anyone.
Successful Project Management.......2007-01-10
This was a required text for a Post-Grad Course. Excellent and easy reading content with plenty of real world examples. Extensive glossary and summary area which made studying for the course even easier.
Project Management 2003.......2006-11-03
I am satisfied with my purchase. I used the book and software in a project management class. I learned a lot about what goes into managing a project. The software was easy to use after a few tries.
Great Text Book.......2006-04-29
This was the assigned text for a class I took. It was an excellent text book: clearly written, well organized, and easy to study. The key points jump off the page and are repeated for emphasis. What's more, this text is so valid that I have already begun to use it at work, and expect it will remain in my reference library for a long time. It is a rare textbook that is worth it's price.

Book Description
Ship It! is a collection of tips that show the tools and techniques a successful project team has to use, and how to use them well. You'll get quick, easy-to-follow advice on modern practices: which to use, and when they should be applied. This book avoids current fashion trends and marketing hype; instead, readers find page after page of solid advice, all tried and tested in the real world.
Aimed at beginning to intermediate programmers,
Ship It! will show you:
- Which tools help, and which don't
- How to keep a project moving
- Approaches to scheduling that work
- How to build developers as well as product
- What's normal on a project, and what's not
- How to manage managers, end-users and sponsors
- Danger signs and how to fix them
Few of the ideas presented here are controversial or extreme; most experienced programmers will agree that this stuff works. Yet 50 to 70 percent of all project teams in the U.S. aren't able to use even these simple, well-accepted practices effectively. This book will help you get started.
Ship It! begins by introducing the common technical infrastructure that every project needs to get the job done. Readers can choose from a variety of recommended technologies according to their skills and budgets. The next sections outline the necessary steps to get software out the door reliably, using well-accepted, easy-to-adopt, best-of-breed practices that really work.
Finally, and most importantly, Ship It! presents common problems that teams face, then offers real-world advice on how to solve them.
Customer Reviews:
Highy Recommended.......2007-07-30
If you are familiar with the "The Pragmatic Programmer"(written by Andy Hunt and Dave Thomas) then you will probably recognise the Pragmatic Bookshelf series of books, set up by Hunt and Thomas, in which Ship It! is included. This series of books sets itself apart by emphasising the practical aspects of delivering software, and also doing it well.
The book is split into the following chapters:
* Introduction
* Tools and Infrastructure
* Pragmatic Project Techniques
* Tracer Bullet Development
* Common Problems and How to Fix Them
From the very first chapter, the authors make it clear `Ship It!' is not another methodology, "There is no single, right way to develop software. There are a lot of wrong ways...". Instead, they have gathered together the `best' bits' of various styles and methodologies they have been directly involved with, and combined them into a practical approach with the focus on delivering a project. The authors do not expect you to necessarily implement everything they suggest all at once. Adopt one or two at time and determine if they work in your environment. This practical stance is reinforced throughout the book. A selection of the topics examined can be broadly listed as follows:
* Use source control (for anything you want to keep)
* Automate your build (one click)
* Use continuous integration
* Track issues and features
* Write tests and automate them
* Use mocking
* Build end-to-end stubbed systems (Tracer Bullet Development)
* Build teams and foster communication
It is easy to read and feels fresh. As another reviewer pointed out, "It's a rare book that speaks convincingly to both developers and managers, but this one does a good job". There is a definite emphasis on the positive; it is about how to make projects succeed rather than a post-mortem of why they fail. The chapter "Common Problems and How to Fix Them" is a gem, with practical advice for developers, managers and customers.
In Appendix E: Issue Tracking Systems, I was surprised to see that Gemini from CounterSoft (http://www.countersoft.com/) was not mentioned. I have implemented it at several sites with minimal effort and it has been used by developers and users with great success.
In Tracer bullet development, I agree with the approach to the end-to-end working `stubbed` systems, but I would also add that methods should also be written in such a way that the release version will throw an exception in any method that has not been implemented (rather than just returning a dummy value). Otherwise, years from now, you might find yourself mentioned on the DailyWTF! In some ways, it would have been nice to have had a worked code example for this section, but I realise the authors did not want to limit themselves to one particular language and restrict the reach of this book; I think they made the right decision.
If you are an experienced developer, then you probably will not find anything revolutionary or truly new amongst its 200 pages, but you might find something that your current routine is missing. Is this book worth reading? Absolutely. I would not hesitate for a moment in saying go out and buy it. Highly recommended.
I rather choose joel.......2007-07-02
I liked the book and It is not expensive at all. It is really useful as a check list on things you need to deploy in your software development process. It will not be easy but for sure it payoff.
However, If you want a more tangential and funny approach to the same issues It could be interesting to read "Joel on Software".
Practical but not Revolutionary.......2006-11-10
This is a good book to own if it's your first "software project" guide. It covers all the right topics and gives you plenty of detail to implement the ideas. However, I didn't find much NEW info.
Had it been one of my first project management books I would have rated it higher.
Getting software out the door the common sense way.......2006-10-13
Following the line of Hunt and Thomas's The Pragmatic Programmer, this book is really a collection of tips and best practices for what the authors have found works well on real projects. It is not a detailed, scientific or process laden tome, rather just some common-sense ideas - some of which you probably do any way. I recommend it here because I believe reading it will help you put some perspective and substance around your build and release process.
Buy it. Live it. Ship It........2006-06-26
We've seen enough books about "why projects fail." Finally, here is a book about "why projects succeed" and how you can help yours. The book is split into several areas. The two most important, in my mind, are the list of critical practices for developers to follow and the explaination of "Tracer Bullet" development. As the author notes right up front, this isn't a book about development project management. This is a book from a developer for developers. Independent of the project management style you use this book is going to help you complete your project and "Ship It!"
The list of critical practices are well defined and each one is simple enough to implement. It makes you feel like maybe you could do it. Most important, it explains why you should do it - in compelling terms so that even if you are skeptical of "continuous integration" or "pair programming" or "unit tests", well, you won't be after you read this book.
"Tracer Bullet" development isn't another methodology, but a way of incrementally developing a project so that the status is more clear to the customer and so that you can quickly turn abstract ideas that the team has into something more concrete to react to. In doing so, you maintain an integrated view of the product you are working on and help people understand their ideas more quickly. It is priceless for any non-trival software. Most of us probably have learned to do this anyway, but now there is a name for it and a guide to understand why we do what we learned through trial and error.

Best Project Management Book.......2006-12-23
This is the best project management book I have read. It is easy to read. It has many answers on how and what to do in a real project. It has some keys to being a better project manager, how to have better projects and how to enhance your career.
Read it and even better attend Neal's Seminar where he covers many of the topics in the book.
Neal Whitten's No Nonsense Advice for Successful Projects.......2006-11-06
One of the best project management books I have ever read.
No-nonsense Advice For Successful Projects: No-nonsense Advice For Successful Projects.......2005-07-08
Good points provided. He tells it like it is. Especially helpful for project managers, whether or not they have difficult teams or projects.
Well-delivered advice.......2005-02-21
Neal Whitten discusses project management best practices in an easy-to-digest format. He bypasses theory and verbose explanations and delivers advice in 5-8 page sections. The first part of each section provides the meat, accompanied by sidebars summing up the page's contents, and then followed questions and answers related to the topic.
I have been reading Whitten in "PM Network" and hearing him at local PMI chapter presentations and this book is a compilation of that material plus additional. The content is perfect for a seasoned project manager who has actual experience to reflect on as they consider Whitten's advice.
A strength of this book is also a weakness, thus only four stars above. While the book is easy to read and maintains a sharp focus, there is also a lot of white space, with large margins, and the constant summarizing and re-summarizing with sidebars and related Q&A does lead to some skimming.
This is one of the few project management books I have ever read that would make a good audio book. With concise advice like "Are you too soft?", "Inspect what you expect", "Manage to your top three problems", and "Escalate is not a dirty word", his message is very effectively delivered, understood, and remembered.

Book Description
The negotiated contract method for RFPs is a rapidly growing trend in construction. Traditionally, RFPs have gone through a competitive bid method – meaning that 100% of the design work is done without the input of contractors and with very little real cost information. With the negotiated contract method, only about 10% of the design work is done before a contractor is brought to the table, which means less paperwork and lower up-front costs. There are several advantages to the negotiated contract method: • Because only a small part of the design work is done up-front (before a contractor is brought on board), no extensive re-design work has to be done when budget/schedule issues with the design become a factor. • A complete team – architect/designer and contractor – is assembled earlier, making for a much more efficient process and outcome. • The RFP process becomes a collaborative effort, rather than a competitive one. There is no other book on the shelf that either focuses specifically on RFPs in the construction industry, or features a step-by-step method for implementing the negotiated contract method. This is a step-by-step guide for managing the RFP process in a way that saves time, money, enhances team collaboration, and assures quality in construction. Focusing on the negotiated contract method (as opposed to the competitive bid method), the book takes readers from articulating the needs/wish list for a construction project, to the analysis of responses and interviews, through negotiations and finalization of the deal. This is a roadmap for: • Preparing, understanding, and assessing the quality of information in an RFP. • Gathering critical, project-specific information from free and up-to-date local databases. • Adding value to the process by assisting consultants in marketing and project management capabilities. • Selecting and working with a team early in the process to stay on-schedule and on-budget. • Improving the materials selection process and the end-result overall quality of construction. • Example and template forms make it easy to create a successful RFP process.

Well worth the investment!.......2006-03-21
A great guide for obtaining pricing early in the development process. Presented in a straight-forward, concise manner, this book will allow owners, consultants, and project managers to obtain useful pricing information that can be used to underwrite financial analysis and assist in selecting a contractor to work with during the design process. We just used the system on a large mixed use project and had excellent results. The analysis tools and approach allowed us focus in on what was the "real" cost of each contractor proposal, not just the cost per square foot. I highly recommend it!

Customer Reviews:
Still Cool.......2006-09-23
This is a great book. It's making my life a lot easier. It presents sound methodology if you are going to develop and build a commercial Web site. I am using it in school right now. It really defines terms in such a way that they are not just words that you toss around. By defining, describing and giving examples the terms become second nature and you actually understand in a logical fashion the integrated elements of designing and maintaining a commercial Web site.
Boring, not up to date, and impossible to pick up..........2005-11-25
The Web Design department of the career college I am an instructor and program coordinator at have used this text for several years now as the primary text for a web project management class. The problem with this book is that it sets the bar too high from the beginning and only applies if one finds themseleves a project manager handling huge corporate website accounts. It is impossible to scale the tone of the book down to explain the process when dealing with individuals and small businesses when the book has you only "wearing one hat" when sometimes you have to wear them all. It's also terribly boring to read, which makes it impossible to gain any understanding from it.This is an old book, in great need of an update. There are much more current and interesting books out there now that handle the same topic, and do it well. This may have been the first book of its kind, but it's certainly not the greatest.
REALLY short on specifics.......2005-11-18
Talks WAY too much in generalities and jargon, with almost no specifics. The website for the book says they can't give more specifics about, for example, project specification documents, because of confidentiality. That's a really lame excuse for not coming up with a sample, detailed project spec.
A Web Developer Manager's Do All Book.......2005-01-08
Three points:
1. Anyone that buys this book with the understanding that they will learn how to project manage should not be in Project Management. One of the best is "The Portable MBA in Project Management" by Eric Verzuh.
2. I can't really add more to the many reviews below giving high ratings to this book. However, I will suggest this. Even if after reading the reviews listed below, you still find yourself not sure if this book is worth it, then "look inside the book" and the table of contents. If that doesn't sell you, then I think you're in the wrong industry.
3. This book is a must have for any project manager of commercial web development who wants to survive in a most competitive industry.
Still a solid methodology for Web Project Management.......2004-02-14
It has been about four years since this book's last edition came out, and it continues to top the list of Web Project Management references, and with reason for it. Its proven methodology provides a solid framework that you can relate to once and again, with confidence and permanently reminding of potential pitfalls and obstacles. In short, Friedlein's book provides the closest thing to a recipe for success with managing web projects: of course, you can always put in a little too much salt yourself, can't you? ;)

an all rounded book, from the conceptual to the practical.......2002-03-01
This is an all rounded book, from the conceptual to the hands-on practical level. It can ne used as a text book, cook book or "creating ideas" book with appeal to the student, to the neophyte as well as the seasoned project manager.
I found the material well distributed and balanced ; epecially liked the concept of IPDM (iterative project development methodology) and the chapter on outsourcing; the survey results give it more authenticity.
The Microsoft chapters and the templates are also very useful.
I would have liked the templates to be more unified, perhaps tying back with the concepts of phase/activity/task.
Highly recommended as a very good book on project management.
A Resource For Software Project Management.......2002-02-12
This text is a good resource for educators, students, and IT professionals. So regardless of whether the reader is a novice, academic, or practioner he or she will find it useful. It is well written, and the topics are presented with clarity. The sequence of the topics and overall format of the content is presented in a structured manner and builds on concepts that were discussed previously. This text incorporates teaching and learning techniques that make it appropriate for class room use. The supplementary materials provide readers with opportunities to apply the techniques described in the book.
The introduction of the Iterative Project Development Methodology (IPDM) outlined in this book will update the knowledge and skills of IT professionals whose projects may include n-tier architecture, legacy applications, open systems, Web-based applications, and e-business solutions. In addition to the wide array of methods, tools and approaches presented, I found the discussion on the pitfalls and cost overruns of software projects particularly insightful. Understanding the factors that cause these projects to fail is crucial to assessing the risk factors which are related to specific projects. The authors point out the sources of pitfalls associated with software projects, they explain how such pitfalls can be avoided by the implementation of current project management methodologies. This approach justifies the need for implementing best practices using Microsoft Project 2000.
This book provides comprehensive coverage of software project management, it is an excellent resource.
Great way to manage software development with MS Project.......2002-01-24
I am coming back to Microsoft project after many years and found this to be a useful guide to develop a comfort level with this software quickly. The book also describes software management methodology, and describes software managment prcatices that can be applied to development projects especially in a business environment.
The Hands-on tutorial and practioner oriented templates were clearly explained and exercised the most useful and important features of Microsoft's Project.
I recommend this for software project managers, business analysts, or CIO's that have project management experience but have not used software based Project management tools before.
A must have for practicing PMs.......2002-01-24
A great reference book for all practicing PMs. You can pick up some excellent tips on managing software development projects.
Covers all of the bases, but not enough detail.......2001-06-23
This is a very useful overview of project management process(es). My only complaint is that it doesn't got into enough detail on some of the documents you need to produce. The samples on their website aren't particularly useful, either. One other gripe is that the target audience seems to be employees of companies who run multiple projects, rather than consultant-types like me.
I gave it 4 stars because, in spite of my complaints, this is a very readable book, and serves as an excellent introduction.

Book Description
This is your complete `how to' book on establishing the Project Office as a methodology for managing multiple development initiatives within your organization. The book presents the PO (Project Office) as a model for use in a wide variety of organizations, especially in R&D environments. As more and more forward-looking firms adopt the project form as their preferred way to organize development work, the need for you to coordinate the use of scarce resources and align initiatives becomes quite evident. This hands-on guide provides you with the essential techniques, templates and tools used by successful managers and consultants to achieve maximum project control and performance of dedicated persons, and groups.
The book looks at the PO as a line function, responsible for the coordination and the infrastructure necessary to manage multiple projects. This practical resource covers all major PO responsibilities, including project portfolio management, project oversight, methods and tool support, staffing and competence development, and promotion of the project culture. You learn that the objective of the Project Office is to complete all projects to best achieve the overall goals of the organization. The book provides guidance in preparing long term plans to enable appropriate decisions concerning the allocation of resources; overseeing the execution of projects on time and within budget; developing processes and systems to satisfy the ever changing product needs; providing stability, professional development and administrative efficiency for management and support personnel; and assuring a smooth transition between start-up, execution and termination phases.

Management consultants Robert Graham and Randall Englund believe that the development and launch of successful new products and services hinges on the formation of a thoroughly integrated, "project-based" organization. In Creating an Environment for Successful Projects: The Quest to Manage Project Management, they use the experiences of Hewlett-Packard, AT&T, General Electric, United Airlines, and other notable firms to show what they mean. They also demonstrate how upper managers can cultivate such an atmosphere in their own enterprises and avoid the failures that otherwise threaten their corporate survival.
Book Description
Ensure the success of your company's special projects
Crisp execution of projects is critical to the survival of today's organizations. This practical book is filled with ideas and examples that will teach you how to build project management competence in your organization.
--Lewis E. Platt, chairman, president and CEO, Hewlett-Packard Company
Finally, a book that fills the void on how to develop project management as an organizational practice. Using the enviable processes already in place at Hewlett-Packard and other progressive companies as touchstones, Graham and Englund serve up solid, results-oriented advice on how upper management can create an environment that supports the success of special projects, especially the development of new products. Building on an incisive examination of the critical role upper-tier management plays in the overall success of projects, the authors show managers exactly what they must do to support the process and implement project management as an organization-wide directive. Packed with leading-edge, real-world examples, a sample project review and other tools, this book will help your organization make and sustain the cultural changes that encourage a project manager's best work.
Customer Reviews:
Too many projects failing?.......2004-03-19
Graham and Englund have achieved something quite remarkable in the second edition of "Creating an Environment for Successful Projects." The original book from 1997 provided a very good road map for organizations looking to improve their project and program management capabilities, and this update significantly improves on it. There are many fresh insights and specifics about what works (and what doesn't work) drawn from an extensive circle of organizations, including many that the authors consulted with personally.
Even more than in the first edition, the message is that excellence in project execution does not just happen - it requires planning, ongoing investment, and the right encouragement. I think the best parts of the book are chapters 3 through 8, because they provide the most concrete and actionable advice for managers of project leaders; they are filled with good practices on what to do and on what to avoid.
How to get the best leverage for your efforts.......2002-04-07
One of the better books on project management, the focus is not so much on specific best practices for project managers to implement on their own within their teams, but how upper management can create an environment that is conducive to project success. This book is exceptionally good at helping to understand how management causes organizational perversity - mucking things up by applying departmental best practices that are totally inappropriate and bad practices for project teams. Great insights into how this happens without upper managers being aware they are doing the opposite of what they intend. Could be used by a Project Office to convince upper management that they might be the main problem that keeps other best practices from being effective. It also highlights those areas where you can get the most leverage, most out of your efforts to get an organization to improve its overall project management effectiveness.
Amazing how a book written in 1997 seems like it was written for current times.
Good info on a sparse topic.......2001-12-23
As a project management consultant, I get asked alot 'how do I implement PM into my company'. There is no one cookie-cutter approach to this since every company is different. There is also no one book out there that adequately covers this subject. This book is the closest thing that there is. If you are looking for a good coverage of the things that you need to be aware of in implementing PM into your company, this book is a good start. It is also well suited for executives looking to implement PM into a company who are curious what PM involves - since a major problem in implementing PM into a company quite often involves executives who are unaware or unconcerned what their responsibilites are for PM. All in all, a useful book that I have used extensively for clients.
Practical Stuff.......2001-02-10
If you want to understand the underpinnings of what makes projects work or not ... this book is a "must read".
It is full of the kind of plain yet profound logic that my grandmother used to pass on to me when I was child. It just made so much practical sense ... .
Ample support for putting the book's key concepts to good us.......1999-01-13
This book was reviewed in "The Journal of Product Innovation Management" May 1998, an international publication of the Product Development & Management Association (PDMA):
A book which discusses how companies can effectively create a healthier and more nurturing environment for product development, based on companies like Hewlett-Packard, DuPont, Raychem and others.
"As the title implies, this book is about managing project management, not about managing projects - an important concept... Its purpose is to get upper management to understand how and why to develop project management as an organizational competency... Relevant across industries from high tech to low, from product to service, and from consumer to industrial or business-to-business... Its key strengths are: 1) its comprehensive treatment of key issues from the role of strategic direction across the project portfolio to the need for cultivating project management learning; 2) its practical recommendations for change; and 3) its easy-to-read examples... The book is well organized with an overview chapter that includes a call to action and an overview of the remaining chapters. The next seven chapters go on to describe each of the elements of creating an environment for success projects. Laid out as pieces of a complete puzzle to signal their importance as a system" (Mark Deck, Pittiglio Rabin Todd & McGrath, May 1998)
