1 out of 5 stars Not up to standard.......2007-04-17

This book was a required text, otherwise I never would have read it. The book is full of inconstancies, bad literary technique, and it takes to many pages to cover not enough material. The authors personal prejudices are obvious. There are better books on teamwork available.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook........2006-03-09

I was required to purchase this book for a project management course and it's one of the better texts I've read on the topic. Well organized and easily referenced, one of the main strengths of the book is it's analysis of real world examples. Very good text overall.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Price for "External Evironments".......2001-04-19

Leigh Thompson has done it again. Like few others this Northwestern University scholar takes current research and puts it on the page like few other experts. I particularly found the sections on dealing with conflict within teams, creativity, and social capital (in the External Evironment section) worth reading. I keep this book with me when I am meeting with a team. I use the individual chapters as a guide for activities there. If you have an interest in teams, Leigh Thompson is the one expert you should include in your library.

5 out of 5 stars Making the Team Makes the Grade!.......2000-01-16

Whether you work in teams, design them, or study them, you will find much of value in this book. Drawing on a wealth of social and behavioral science findings, Leigh Thompson shows the advantages, and the pitfalls, of getting things done through teamwork. Clearly written, with many case examples, Thompson builds on her research and consulting experiences to create a complex picture of what makes groups tick. I particularly liked her explanation of how to foster creativity in teams, as well as how to deal with the inevitable conflicts that arise. She notes that teams are not a panacea. However, under the right conditions, properly organized teams contribute substantially to their organizations. If you're dissatisfied with the way things are going in your organization, this book would make a great (anonymous?) gift for your boss!

4 out of 5 stars First steps to the world of management.......2006-02-28

I work for a book summary company. One of the books selected for summary is this book.

Author Morey Stettner handles a relatively new subject of initiating those who have ascended the Managerial throne. While there are many management books that outlines theories and principles by the dozens, inducting new managers into the process for acquiring Managerial proficiency through practical steps will indeed be of great help to `upstarts' and `novice'. What makes this book valuable is that it covers some of the most crucial areas of managerial effectiveness, viz., speaking listening, responding and disciplining. Using illustrative examples the author guides us through the basic managerial elements that one can immediately identify with and implement. The book rings true more so for the insightful approach to the topics and the clarity with which the points are espoused. You would be motivated to apply the various steps outlined as you will find them highly realistic and feasible to adopt. This is where the book rules high I feel. For those executives `waiting in the wings' or `wannabes' or even Management students, this book should really be a boon to read and execute. Indeed this book is like a blueprint for ushering us through the first steps into the world of management. Even top managers who are ever willing to learn can draw useful lessons and widen their horizon of knowledge. No doubt it is a useful book for any reader laying his/her hands on it.

5 out of 5 stars A great book any manager.......2005-08-25

This is a must have book for any one just promoted to a manager or even an effective team member who wishes to go to managerial or people management jobs. This book can also be a good resource for those who are managers for long time but never had good mentor or training.

5 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!.......2001-03-30

Most of us developed our management skills, or lack thereof, in the same way: through trial and error. But Morey Stettner's new book will give anyone freshly promoted to the ranks of management a valuable head start by spelling out practical steps that new managers can take to be effective. For all of you old-timers, reading this book will induce a near constant mental stream of "I wish someone had told me that when I was starting out." For example, Stettner's first step, writing out a basic plan of how you want to manage your subordinates, might at first seem a bit naïve to veterans. But consider this point: How much time did you spend thinking about the techniques you would use in managing people before taking over your first managerial assignment? The probable answer is not much. In a clear voice laced with illustrative examples, Stettner covers the critical skills managers rely on every day: speaking, listening, criticizing and disciplining. For his insightful treatment of these topics, we [...] recommend this book to managers new and old, employees and students of management - But then again, aren't we all?

4 out of 5 stars Very Complete....Almost.......2000-07-14

This book is well written and nearly perfect for those transitioning to a management position with little time to spare. I found it to be well organized and concise, highlighting good common sense principles to remember when you take the helm of your new position. It addresses many of the common stereotypes and pitfalls new and experienced managers encounter. The book does fall short of one of the back covers claims about hiring. Nowhere within it's pages does it discuss hiring strategies or interviewing skills. This was disappointing and a critical piece missed by the author.

If most coaching guides look as if you'd need a coach just to get through them, you'll love this itty-bitty guide, which zooms in on the most important aspects of organizational-workplace coaching, from selecting an effective personal coaching style and preparing and shaping a coaching session to followup steps, dealing with barriers to coaching, troubleshooting, and more advanced coaching, such as team coaching, long-distance coaching, coaching plus appraising, and assessing your own coaching skills. On every page, boxed "power tips," quickie case studies and self-tests, to-do checklists, and easy-to-follow flowcharts demystify the process. Granted, if you're looking for specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling-Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision-making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies series' talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-sized bits and sidebars with Dorling-Kindersley's signature, crisp graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective.

Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute, and look so smart in a neat little stack or row, that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire department or staff. --Timothy Murphy

Book Description

We have long been taught that emotions should be felt and expressed in carefully controlled ways, and then only in certain environments and at certain times. This is especially true when at work, particularly when managing others. It is considered terribly unprofessional to express emotion while on the job, and many of us believe that our biggest mistakes and regrets are due to our reactions at those times when our emotions get the better of us. David R. Caruso and Peter Salovey believe that this view of emotion is not correct. The emotion centers of the brain, they argue, are not relegated to a secondary place in our thinking and reasoning, but instead are an integral part of what it means to think, reason, and to be intelligent. In The Emotionally Intelligent Manager, they show that emotion is not just important, but absolutely necessary for us to make good decisions, take action to solve problems, cope with change, and succeed. The authors detail a practical four-part hierarchy of emotional skills: identifying emotions, using emotions to facilitate thinking, understanding emotions, and managing emotions—and show how we can measure, learn, and develop each skill and employ them in an integrated way to solve our most difficult work-related problems.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good resource for my staff.......2007-04-10

I liked the overall theory approach the book takes, but then it gets into why these 4 skills are important, and finally, what to do about it. So, there is a balance of why and also what and how. My managers are excellent managers and get the job done. At times, they don't consider the emotional needs of their people. I hope that the book will allow them to at least consider the role emotions play at work. That will be a huge lift for them and their leadership skills.

The other reason I selected this book is that it does not claim to be the cure-all for leadership or people skills. They take a constrained approach, and this will resonate with my staff - be aware, though, that this sort of tone and approach may not work for you.

3 out of 5 stars Difference between one star and five star reviews.......2005-09-10

I have read a few pages from the book (The three star rating is just to be on the balanced side of things) and the author's (Caruso) article "Defining the Inkblot Called Emotional Intelligence" published after this book in 2004.
I agree with the article that we should read, proactively accept, give constructive comments and learn from all data on any scientific/theoretical topic whether we agree with the data or not.

I have noticed that the reviewers rating one star have a more stereotype approach in their comments and are taking thing personally. These people also have one thing in common: not specified their own speciality and background in the field, and so no ground evidence on why exactly they did not like the book.
On the other-hand, reviewers giving 4 or 5 stars mostly have given professional explanations and have long years of experience either scientific or managerial or academic in the field of Management or Psychology. Therefore as I always agree, "science/knowledge is light", and so go for the more rationally emotional reviews and enjoy the book, no matter what its level.

5 out of 5 stars Tact, Poise & Encouragement.......2005-08-15

This selection reflected tact, poise, and encouragement: great tact in pulling together corporate and academic disciplines, poise (in the Emotional Intelligence with which it was written), and Encouragement -- particularly for anyone who learned of the MSCEIT and how this assessment could reflect Emotional Intelligence ability. However, after reading the reviews on this site, it's obvious that many reviewers would disagree with this. Allow me, please, to state my review.

While I believe that comments are to be respected when both written and reviewed, I suspect sufficient lack of knowledge and professionalism on the part of some reviewers at this site. While each reader is entitled to his/her opinion of the book, anyone who is compelled to resort to trashing the book and/or its authors indicates to me a very juvenile/immature way of responding. There is neither value, nor depth, nor substance, in such responses, nor does such a response offer any constructive or valuable feedback for contemplation.

I have read the book and must say that I believe it to be a refreshing approach to EI/EQ. It's somewhat of a shift from the traditional Goleman-type readings, which, by the way, I have also appreciated reading. I've gained something valuable from all of them.

In "The Emotionally Intelligent Manager," Doctors Caruso and Salovey offer four distinct steps to managing with emotional intelligence. While a considerable portion of the manuscript appears dedicated to the corporate world, I find the selection -- in its entirety -- to be applicable for anyone in the corporate realm, the non-profit realm, or in the realm of academia. The book certainly allows for transfer of skills from one area to another, from one discipline to the next.

Additionally, readers who have found nothing but criticism should avail themselves to the training workshops that deal specifically with Emotional Intelligence and the MSCEIT -- the MSCEIT being the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test. The assessment measures EI ability.

Besides the MSCEIT, interesting and curious thinking would be to wonder where the scores of these individuals might play out on a typical 360 assessment. Wouldn't you wonder?

Not only have I been fortunate in attending the MSCEIT Training & Certification this year and the Six Seconds/Level One EQ Teacher & Training Certification previous to MSCEIT training, but I am also a PhD student who will be focusing my PhD in Integrated Psychology with a focus in EI/EQ. With that, I will have the opportunity to use the MSCEIT considerably in my quantitative study with regard to my dissertation.

I would encourage anyone who has so negatively reviewed/trashed "The Emotionally Intelligent Manager" and its authors to take the MSCEIT assessment discussed in the text to find out what his/her ability truly is in Emotional Intelligence. Only individuals who would refrain from considering doing something like this would be those who wouldn't be willing to acknowledge any deficit on their part in this regard, say, if one or more of the results on the MSCEIT would indicate an area or two that an individual might consider developing.

Perhaps folks who would avail themselves of this opportunity would come to realize that a Level One course in Six Seconds EQ (sixseconds.org) might benefit them before they so violently attack and pass judgment on another book or its authors without their having the "full deck of cards" to deal with, or should I say without having "all their ducks" in a row.

The ideal result would be for these individuals who feel the need to be so unproductively critical with hollow comments to realize that they truly jumped the gun in their initial reviews and to amend their positions. Pehaps they will have grown in their Emotional Intelligence ability to re-frame and re-evaluate the book for the genuine wisdom it vividly contains in both academic and corporate expertise.

With that respectfully spoken, I say "Carry on, Caruso & Salovey! I look for another respectable masterpiece to sequel this one!!!"

1 out of 5 stars Simplistic advice.......2005-04-22

The advice given in this book is really so banal that I suppose anyone could have written the book. I really don't understand why there has been so much attention given to the concept of emotional intelligence. Seems to me that normal folks are, according to the description of the authors, emotionally intelligent. No need to write books about something that's so obvious. Is it maybe written for those you lack the real intelligence?

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful.......2005-04-21

I found the book full of refreshing information and advice that I can easily follow - and have. I already do a lot of what the book suggests, but it helped me to be a bit more thoughtful about how I deal with emotions at work. As a bonus, I also find the strategies to be very helpful at home with my two children. By chance, I read the first appendix which had some fun quizzes and ideas. These should be part of the regular book since I almost missed out on the material. The stories are quite interesting - the `good guy' doesn't always finish first - and that is what the book is about - doing the right thing, not becoming king of the hill. All in all, easy to read and extremely helpful to me.

4 out of 5 stars Lucid directions on how to rule.......2006-07-24

This book offers the middle-aged middle manager a strategy for surging ahead instead of sinking in an ocean of uncontrollable organizational forces. Author Peter Block provides strategies for countering the negative effects of being enmeshed in hierarchy and bureaucracy. Reactions to that experience, especially fear, lead to bureaucratic management styles that leave everyone in the company - sometimes even the CEO - feeling trapped and frustrated. The book wanders around and bogs down here and there, but we find that its advice - which strongly pushes self-awareness, vision and autonomy in the service of others - could muster middle management's entrepreneurial spirit.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-06-21

Unfortunately, Block lives in a "what if" fantasy. Politics is a "real world" subject.

5 out of 5 stars The Fundamental Text on Empowerment.......2000-07-21

Fourteen years have passed since the original publication of this book, and we are now in what is called the post-empowerment era. Nevertheless Block's text remains its fundamental status, and its relevance and value have in no way diminished.

"The Empowered Manager" would be on any short list of the most important management books ever written if only on account of its classical exposition of one of perhaps the most significant idea in late twentieth century management practice. In addition, every page contains sage practical advice of benefit to anyone who wants to be more than a slave or a drone at work.

Check out Bergmann et al's "Everyone a Leader" and Hirschhorn's "Reworking Authority" for some more recent developments in this area. But do not fail to read this book: its wisdom is inspirational, and Block's fine style makes it a treat to read.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for any person in a leadership position.......1999-09-01

Block gets to the bottom of what leadership is all about -- Love and Trust. Love for one another, the love to serve, the love to help others rise. The courage to do what would cause traditional, stoic managers to turn their noses up and jeer. His words, however taboo by traditional management standards, are priceless. I always felt this way, but was so glad to see Block put it in print. I realized I was not crazy after all! My ideas were not so weird or unconventional :-) There is so much more. READ THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars This is a "must-have" for anyone in a leadership role........1998-06-20

The Empowered Manager is a "classic" in the full sense of the word. It belongs in the book collection of anyone who hopes to lead effectively in an organizational setting.

Personally, reading this book was a transforming experience in my career. It helped me to understand the nuances of effective leadership -- that the work environment we create through our words and behavior is something we have the power to change in very positive and profound ways.

A great book!

This handy-dandy little book aims to prove that not only are great workplace leaders made, not born--they can be made in 72 visually snazzy pages or less! In a quick-reference thumbnail format, it shows you how to learn from others and develop the personal strengths that will make you into a good leader, form and lead effective teams, exercise authority and delegate tasks, communicate clearly and set clear goals, and, finally, to inspire excellence in others through motivation, establishing a shared vision, managing "openly," boosting achievement, and being adventurous. A seminar's worth of boxed tips, checklists, and flow charts bring it all to life for you, from getting the most out of meetings to assessing your own leadership skills. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

5 out of 5 stars Lead, follow or get out of the way....;>.......2001-09-07

Well, that is what someone in my life always says.

Leading is not always easy. Being aware of problem solving and how to support the endeavors of others is very important.

In this tiny book you will find practical techniques that will show you how to use your initiative to inspire excellence. The clear text and illustrations cover most aspects of supporting, empowering and motivating staff.

Robert Heller has written many books and is the leading authority on management consultancy. He was the founding editor of Management t Today magazine and has supervised the launch of a number of successful business journals.

He seeks to make you a dynamic and inspirational leader. Power tips show you how to handle real-life situations and develop first-class leadership skills. Yellow numbered boxes include phrases such as:

"Take into account the feelings of staff when promoting internally."

"Actively seek the views of your team members."

Fun Do and Don't lists are also included.

Do: Do try to create a positive atmosphere, free from rigidity.
Don't: Don't ask people to do things that you wouldn't do yourself.

Chapters Include:

Learning to Lead: Focusing on quality, learning from others, gaining experience, mastering roles, developing strengths, assessing your leadership potential.

Leading Others: Preparing to lead, forming a team, exercising authority, delegating tasks, communicating clearly, dynamizing groups, collegiate leadership.

Improving Your Effectiveness: Making decisions, setting goals, developing a team, leading discussions, using meetings, analyzing problems, giving support, assessing your leadership skills.

Inspiring Excellence: Motivating others, establishing a vision, generating ideas, managing openly, boosting achievement, being adventurous.

A handy index "leads" you to topics of interest. A few case studies make the topics seem more down-to-earth and helpful. The "Giving Support" chapter was something you could use in any situation. People will bring their personal difficulties to a good leader and they may not even be work related. It is important to show sympathy.

"Trust can be difficult to build, but it is easy to lose."

The aspect of a promise made is a promise kept is very important. Being loyal to your people, praising success and only criticizing in private will show others you are someone they can trust and that you have their best interests at heart.

Compact and essential!

This is another example of hearing "the same ole stuff." Can't some author get origional? This was so elementary and certainly not "NEW" information, as the title suggests.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding insights from a former top assistant!.......2004-07-01

This book has helped so many people! It's perfectly brilliant.

I think it's insane that reviewers are commenting on publisher's type-o's instead of commenting on how significant this book really is. Obviously, Ms. Duncan proofed her own book and after meeting Ms. Duncan at an event, I mentioned the reviews about the errors in the book. Ms. Duncan and her staff has tried desperately for years to demand that the book be reprinted. Some things unfortunately are out of one's hands, and I recognize this after years of being a journalist. Look at the NY Times! And every other book on your shelf! They all have errors!

Ms. Duncan has been instrumental in the salary increases, and gaining recognition for this truly unique role! I recommend this book to anyone in the role or considering it!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2000-07-19

I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Duncan's book. I found it an easy read, packed with lots of excellent information.

As with the other reviewer I was extremely disappointed in the skills test in the back of the book. Missing questions, answers to questions that weren't printed.

I wonder if Ms. Duncan has read her own book? Did she review the skills test information in the back before it was published? If the fault lies with the publisher, I hope she got her money back. I also hope she'll do a re-print with the skill test corrected because I found it very helpful in identifying weak areas in my own skill set.

I've been an Executive Secretary/Assistant for the past ten years. Often a good assistant is taken for granted. I appreciated Ms. Duncan's affirmation that my job is more than a job, it's a career and that not just anyone can be a good assistant.

If you can get past all the problems with the skill test in the back of the book, I think you'll find the content extremely interesting, insightful, and motivating.

2 out of 5 stars Talk About Ironic!.......2000-05-11

I just finished reading this book about the "new executive assistant". Of course it emphasizes attention to detail, checking your work, accuracy, etc. Upon completing the extensive skills test in the back of book, I was horrified to find the following blatant errors: 1. In the vocabulary section, the questions skip from #56 to #61, yet in the answer section, these questions do appear. 2. The proofreading section fails to point out periods that are missing at the end of two sentences. Here's the kicker: 3. When I went to check my answers for the spelling section, I discovered that there were only two answers out of 110 questions. To top, there were answers for #110 - 122, which didn't exist in the first place.

OK, can anyone find a proofreader at McGraw Hill to catch these types of errors? How can anyone take this book seriously? The other person who reviewed this book obviously did not read the whole thing. What a disappointment! I do recommend another book that I read. It's called The Valuable Office Professional by Michelle Burke. She is right on the money. There are some more in-depth self-evaluation tests, which go much further than vocabulary and grammar skills. I also got some information about her consulting service, which I am trying to convince management our company needs. That's my summary of this book. Good luck with your administrative careers no matter who you are or where you live!

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Duncan has written a mentoring masterpiece!.......1999-02-06

"The New Executive Assistant" is a must-read for aspiring or seasoned executive assistants, their bosses, and everyone in between.

Ms. Duncan doesn't just advise you to develop a proactive rather than a reactive approach to your administrative career, she guides you to discovering both what you want out of life and what your career can provide. She covers all the important bases for surviving in today's fast-paced world: learning to adapt to change (technical and cultural); mastering the fundamentals of communicating what you really mean; tapping into your management and leadership potential; handling both yourself and others in conflict situations; promoting yourself, your boss, and your company; and regaining your spiritual "center". Most importantly, however, Ms. Duncan asks wether or not you are cut out to be an executive assistant. Life is too short to just have a job; whatever it may be, find a career that works for you, challenges you, and fits your personality.

Packed with objective insights, advice, and enjoyable witticisms, "The New Executive Assistant" delivers. I found in this one book what countless seminars and 50-minute training series have not been able to provide; I found truely usable, relevant insights and information. Ms. Duncan has created a mentoring master piece for executive assistants (and anyone who wants to understand them)!

Tools, techniques, and real-life examples help the reader develop a plan of action for transforming a vision of leadership into an implementable reality.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Leadership Wisdom.......2006-06-25

This is a good introductory book into the principles and practice of leadership. It teaches about the leadership skills that are critical in today's highly dynamic operating environment where change is the only constant. In this case, it is essential to have leaders (rather than managers) who can provide the vision for the organization, show the direction and motivate people towards the realization of the vision.

The author clearly explains the critical attributes of a leader which include team building, good communication skills, decision making ability, and the ability to motivate and coach others for the effective accomplishment of goals.

The book is a good investment for those who in leadership positions, particularly those who are at the beginning of their careers in this field without much experience or previous training. The author gives useful tips which are excellent guide readers. The checklist at the end of each chapter is a useful tool to reinforce what the reader would have studied in the text.

2 out of 5 stars Common Sense Stuff.......2005-10-24

I found this book only provides common sense stuff, not very insightful. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout this book.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2005-04-04

If this book were an entrée, it would mostly consist of meat and potatoes. Author Marlene Caroselli accompanies her valuable handbook on the basics of leadership with insightful quotations and anecdotes. "Basic" is the operative word here. The book makes no pretense, for example, of delving into the theoretical side of leadership development. Nor does it prepare managers for specific business tasks that they're more likely to encounter as leaders, such as budgeting and strategic planning. Rather, this book is specifically tailored for current managers who have leadership ambitions, and for newly minted leaders who need a little expertise to seize control of their new roles. We recommend it as a solid menu option with lots of good advice for that eager-to-lead audience. The book is thoroughly crafted to achieve its purpose, though more experienced readers may find themselves asking, "Where's the gravy?"

5 out of 5 stars High on the "must read" list.......2001-02-06

Leadership Skills for Managers(published by McGraw-Hill) provides some unusual slants on the topic of leadership. For example, the assertion that "leaders form strategic alliances" was something I hadn't considered before. The Prism of Partnerships showed exactly how to form such alliances. Thank you for some new slants on an old subject.

5 out of 5 stars Real Asset.......2001-02-06

This book is a real asset to any business manager - a must read- easy to follow - great tips for sound management.

Succeed by applying the combat-tested principles of one of America's most successful battlefield leaders.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Should be taught at universities.......2007-01-11

It is hard/cold/ethical/no-nonsense leadership principles.
There is a difference between being a leader and being a manager.
I wish colleges (all arenas including masters in business) taught a class that had this information in it. It is my observation that leadership training of this nature is only taught at high $$ seminars and at Military War Colleges. This book is a high $$ seminar for pennies on the dollar. I keep it on my desk beside my computer monitor and read a page every day then reread the previous day's page. Two minutes in the morning and I now find myself unconsciously following the ideas/concepts I read earlier in the week.

I found myself wanting more meat with every page. . . that is not the design of this book. I am sending a copy to my nephew who just graduated the Naval Academy.

5 out of 5 stars Tactical Leadership for Business Mamagers.......2000-05-07

Through this book Charles M. Province has complied the very best there is in leadership. Read and learn....... This collection of George S. Patton's pithy one liners shows how business managers can successed by applying the combat-tested principles of one of America's most famous battlefield leaders. General Patton was a professional soldier who spent his life inspiring people to accomplish the seemingly impossible. A brief bio & photos of the General help readers visualize one of the great military leaders of all time. The inspirational content will make this book an indispensable companion for busy executives everywhere.

1 out of 5 stars READ AXELROD. This book is terrible in comparison.......2000-03-20

If you read the Axelrod book on Patton it relates to management much better than this attempt. For a man who worships Patton like Province, the connection to business should have been easy, but he was not objective. And relating Patton to Deming? Ridiculous.

1 out of 5 stars Read Ladislas Farago to really learn about Patton.......1999-12-19

This book is taken almost word for word in the intro from the movie "Patton" based on Ladislas' book. It contains typos such as 'D Day' and also does not give any insight into the man. Connecting Patton to Deming seems a bit ridiculous to someone with knowledge of the two men.

Patton did not consider war 'great', per se', and should not be idolized. He enjoyed it and was excellent at it, however he agonized over the men he lost. Perhaps that is the analogy that businessmen should make today.

4 out of 5 stars Management, Patton Style.......1999-11-25

Charles Province did an excellent job of compiling Patton's thoughts on leadership and how it applies to business. It brings a contrast between leadership and management concepts. He also linked the thoughts of Charles Deming to some of the messages. I have used selected points in sharing practical leadership and management principles with my business associates.

Like any book, read it with a critical eye. Management and leadership studies are an evolutionary process. We should never stop learning.

As an officer in the Army, I appreciate the candor of Patton and the book's focus on application. The messages are motivational. I would highly recommend the book as required reading and a forum for discussion.
