Imagine you've finally snagged that long-awaited promotion to the ranks of management and you're suddenly faced with your first official presentation before the boss, first interview with a job applicant, first contact with a "demotivated" subordinate, or first truly critical decision. If there is no one you can comfortably turn to for assistance--a common problem today for many in this position--the Essential Manager's Manual, by consultants-communicators Robert Heller and Tim Hindle, could prove invaluable. This logically organized encyclopedia of leadership fundamentals concisely explains the basic actions required in these and other common corporate scenarios, making it a useful resource for information on business communications, time management, decision-making, and a broad array of personnel issues ranging from motivating a staff to realizing when they are suffering from stress. "Stress can be infectious, so you need to recognize it in others before it affects the people with whom they work (including you). There are many ways of reacting to stress; learn to notice common warning signs so that you have time to decide how to react," begins this representative section, before going on to offer specifics on spotting and mitigating its potential impact. --Howard Rothman

2 out of 5 stars Too basic for practical use.......2007-09-09

This book tries to cover too many topics. It isn't detailed enough to even be a good reference. The only use I could see is for someone who wants a quick overview of one of the topics. If you have the slightest clue about what you're doing, spend your money more wisely on a book devoted to the topic.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for First time Sipervisors.......2007-01-16

This book is really a must have for first time Supervisors or Managers. Is is very simple, strait forward, and helpful with great illustrations. It is great for brush ups on some subjects that may not rise often. I always arm my management team with this book as well as Who Moved my Cheese.

5 out of 5 stars A REALLY great manual.......2002-10-21

The book is really amazing. I'm a business administration undergraduate student who bought this book...

Reallly... It IS an very VERY valuable source for both students and managers themselves... I highly recommend it...

5 out of 5 stars Quick Reference!.......2001-12-12

The manual is trying to cover all the essential areas of management. It is an ideal reference book for those who wants to have a peep into the management field. For those who are in the advanced stage of management this book may serve to refresh the basics.

It is a good book for the entry level personnel in the management field.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive!.......2001-05-07

Robert Heller is a leading authority on management consulting. he was the founding editor of Management Today. He is the author of many acclaimed and worldwide best-selling books including: The Naked Manager, Culture Shock, The Way to Win and The Complete Guide to Modern Management.

If you want to eventually move into a management position or want to reevaluate yourself and see how you can improve on your management skills, then you might want to have a manual of manager's secrets close at hand.

In today's fast-moving business world, organizations are constantly evolving. In an aggressively competitive marketplace, you will be expected to deliver better and better results. The most successful business managers will recognize the need to adapt and change and continually examine the way they work. By developing a wide range of skills and keeping those skills up to date, they will excel in their job.

This guide covers the most important aspects of business life. It covers interpersonal and professional skills. The sections on communication, time management and dealing with stress, contain advice that is applicable to a conventional and unconventional office environment.

In today's office, there is also a range of new technology which has revolutionized the working lives of millions of people around the world. You will find practical advice on all the key areas of business management. The book is fully illustrated and has annotated photographs, charts and flow diagrams. 1,200 quick-reference power tips (like: "Remember that honesty is not the best policy; it is the only policy") cover every management situation. There are checklists, points to remember and do's and don'ts. Case studies help to focus on real-life management problems.

The section on matching an applicant to a job will be helpful to managers who do their own hiring. How do you handle hostility in the office? The sections on body language were right on. You will see pictures of various poses which will "betray" you. I love body language because it shows what people are really thinking.

One thing I always remember was when a new manager comes into an existing team. If they act too controlling without first gaining respect, the team will rebel a bit. It is better to be relaxed, yet confident. This is the type of information you will find and it is very practical. While some managers may already know this information from personal experience, I simply can't imagine anyone would know everything in this comprehensive manual. I think everyone could take away many points which would make them more successful.

As they say: "Avoid people and situations that tempt you to behave in ways you are not happy with. Hey, this book could be great for anyone! I also loved how they said: "You have the right to make genuine mistakes without feeling guilty. You have the right to refuse other people's excessive demands on your life."

I don't know, maybe this isn't only for managers. I sounds like a survival guide to life in the workplace.

Classify this itsy-bitsy book as a project management guide that isn't a project to read but that distills all the basics for you into a quick thumbnail guide on everything from establishing objectives and keeping to schedules and budgets to providing effective leadership and tackling problems efficiently. Along the way, simple checklists enable you to be fully prepared at every stage, from starting up to closing down, and accessible diagrams and flow charts explore different options for action and provide useful examples. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty li'l books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies book series's talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-size bits and sidebars with Dorling Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute and look so smart in a neat little stack or row that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

To paraphrase the Rolling Stones, you might not always get what you want from this short 'n' sweet little guidebook on strategic thinking and planning, but you just might get what you need. That would include concise and handy visual and verbal tips on gathering and analyzing key information, setting short- and long-term objectives, developing your team leadership skills, predicting future trends, and maintaining a flexible approach throughout. It also covers the essential tools of strategic management, from SWOT (strengths/weaknesses/opportunities/threats) analysis and feasibility studies to budgeting forecasts and contingency plans. Granted, if you're looking for specific or in-depth guidance--say, how to do strategic thinking in a particular field, like biotechnology, or a particular division, like human resources--you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basic steps of strategic planning, both individually and in a group setting, this may do you just fine.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Basic, essential, and very well-presented.......2007-06-26

During a recent business trip, I stopped by an airport store and saw a display of several volumes of the "Essential Managers" series. I purchased this one as well as John Seymour and Martin Shervington's Maximizing Performance, read both while en route home and was surprised, frankly, to find each to be remarkably comprehensive within a 69-page narrative. Obviously, the subject of strategic thinking is vast and complicated. No single book could possibly cover everything, nor do Bruce and Langdon make any such claim. What they offer is a focus on fundamentals, as do the volumes that comprise the Harvard Business Essentials series.

First, Bruce and Langdon share their definition of strategy, examine the strategic process, suggest how to balance pursuit of both short- and long-term goals, prepare for strategic success, and anticipate what may lie ahead. Next, they explain how to analyze the given situation in terms of influences, customers, competition, and the given organization's available resources (e.g. the skills and capabilities of its people). Then Bruce and Langdon focus on the strategic planning process itself (definition of purpose, determination of competitive advantage, setting of operational boundaries, selection of points of emphasis, and estimation of probable costs of implementation. They conclude with a series of observations and suggestions concerning strategy implementation.

As I read this book, I was again reminded of Oliver Wendell Holmes' comment, "I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity." To me, that comment suggests the essential value of the "Essential Managers" series, at least of the two volumes I have read thus far. Here's another point. What Bruce and Langdon have to say about the fundamentals of strategic thinking is consistent with what other experts on the subject suggest, notably Peter Drucker, Henry Mintzberg, and Michael Porter. As I read this book, I was also reminded of what Drucker observed in 1963: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all."

However different they may be in every other respect, all under-performing organizations fail to formulate an appropriate strategy and/or do not implement it effectively. One key word is "appropriate" because a strategy that was appropriate only a few years ago (or yesterday) may no longer be appropriate now. Another other key word is "effectively." With all due respect to the importance of knowing what to do and how to do it, former Texas football coach Darrell Royal is right: "potential" means "you ain't done it yet." Credit Andy Bruce and Ken Langdon with providing a remarkably comprehensive discussion of what to do and how to do it. It remains for those who read their book to apply what they have learned.

4 out of 5 stars I wish I had this book when I was a young corporate rat........2001-03-13

I bought this book actually out of curiosity. It was pocket-size, and also visually very appealing. After perusing it, I have this feeling that this book is more intended for very young executives and/or new supervisors.

In terms of basic steps, the book is just fine. In a nutshell, there are some two dozen of "strategic thinking" topics, which have been artfully rolled into the 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with colurful boxed tips, 101 of them to be exact. It is designed for easy reading. There is even a simple but fun test at the end pages.

Highly recommended for all beginners into the management field, as well as for older kids, who wants to learn how to think strategically. I wish I had this book when I was a young corporate rat.

For a deeper treatment on the subject, I would suggest a quick browse of books in my Strategic Thinking Bookshelf (listmania).

If you need to take responsibility for the budget of your organization or department--or if you're not directly responsible for it, but it would help you immensely to be able to understand it--you'll love this energetically formatted pocket-sized book that explains the whole budgeting process in 72 quick-and-clean pages. Opening with a basic explanation of budgets and their purpose, it goes on to illustrate how to prepare one (clarifying objectives, standardizing it), write one (anticipating revenues and estimating expenditures, producing the figures, understanding capital budgets, and producing cash budgets, then consolidating and finalizing them), and monitor one (analyzing discrepancies, monitoring and investigating variances, making adjustments, and recognizing "behavioral" problems). If all of that sounds confusing, you'll be happy to know that boxed tips, sample budget sheets, to-do checklists, and easily followed flow charts demystify the process on every page--even for those (like this reviewer) who barely can balance their own checkbooks! Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you might find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But, if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do just fine.

Money in...Money out. How do you control the flow and make sure you balance your budget? To learn all you need to know about the budgeing process, you have to first consider the expenditures, anticipate revenues and correct errors.

"Budgeting is the process of preparing, compiling, and monitoring financial budgets. It is a key management tool for planning and controlling a department within an organization."

Tips like: "Always remember that if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail" sounded familiar. Monitoring Budgets is a helpful chapter as it also has a case study. Graphs, charts and a budget analysis all add to the fun.

This compact reminder will help managers to keep an eye on the company budget and will give them some new ideas. I still think a copy of this book would be handy for everyone in Congress.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on budget management.......2001-07-13

This short book provides a clear blueprint for managers faceing the insidious hurdles of P&L management for the first time. The chapters provide an easy progression from basic COGS management to allocating scarce dollars between competing interests and simultaneously controlling the small items which eat into your profit margin. It is sufficiently general enough in scope to be applied to a number of different situations but specific enough to offer concrete advice.

1 out of 5 stars Same poor print quality on the original and replacement books I ordered!.......2006-05-22

Can't comment on the content because both the first and second copies I received were not legible. What happened at the printer's? No quality control check, apparently, before these books were shipped for sale.

1 out of 5 stars Poor content, poor print quality . How'd this ever get published?.......2005-12-11

This book was useless to me, and also maddening because it purported to address issues with quality of content. I should have read the other reviews here and then steered clear of this book. The content is anemic: nothing of substance here. And the publication looks like someone took it to a copy shop and made a copy of a copy.

This book simply does not offer useful information or -- by virtue of content and presentation -- 'walk the talk' of the importance of quality content.

1 out of 5 stars Incredibly bad printing quality.......2005-09-07

This author is highly recommended, but the printing quality is worse than from an extremely poor fax machine. I really don't care about the quality of the content as trying to read it would be unbearable. It is going back immediately.

2 out of 5 stars First 30 pages are all you really need........2003-11-01

I'm a huge fan of McGovern, but this book isn't worth the money. You can actually read the first section of the book - the part I really loved - at his web site for free: www.gerrymcgovern.com. The "sample web style guide" at the end of the book is woefully underwritten. Buy CONTENT CRITICAL instead.

1 out of 5 stars Almost Criminal.......2003-05-03

This book is next to useless as a web style guide. Of the 224 pages only the first 35 pages are devoted to the topic of style. The rest of the book is a glossary of terms with little practical use. Most of the material presented in this book is available on the web for free and in greater detail.

My first glance through the book was a disappointment. Two days later I gave it a second chance but it confirmed my first impression so I sent it back.

2 out of 5 stars Information Technology for the non-IT Literate.......2002-01-01

I seriously debated returning this book for a refund--which would have just covered the price of the round-trip shipping. Initially, I wanted to give the book 0 stars but had to settle for the minimum allowed 1 star. However, upon further reflection I've realized that there is an audience for this book and it does provide a fair answer to some very basic questions about what IT is and how it can serve a business.

I do not by any means consider myself an IT guru--which is the reason I bought the book as a handy reference in the first place. However, I found the book to provide virtually no new insight into the world of IT for me. The intended audience appears to be--but is not highlighted as--managers of businesses or departments in which computers are used little to none or the knowledge of how they are used there is elementary. The book provides some basic tips on how these managers might employ IT (e.g., a page is dedicated to making presentations using a software application).

If you work in the IT industry, this book is not worth the space on your bookshelf. If you are computer-literate enough that you have and use a computer at home, you are still probably more advanced than this book. If you work or manage a small non-IT oriented company and are wanting to get some ideas as to how to improve the efficiency of some of your business practices, this book is worth reading as an introduction--but expect to need additional books to help you actually implement the ideas presented.
